On the Trail of the Snow Leopard in Kazakhstan by UNDP Kazakhstan on Exposure
Aleksey Grachev, head of the theriology laboratory of the Institute of Zoology, is one of the most famous specialists studying the snow leopard in Kazakhstan. He runs the Snow Leopard Monitoring Centre that collects and analyses information about this rarest of predators from all over Kazakhstan, and makes recommendations for its protection.Aleksey is not the only scientist in his family who specializes in wildlife studies and protection – Aleksey's father and great-uncle are also zoologists. From early childhood Aleksey accompanied his father, Alexander V. Grachev, on scientific expeditions that were dedicated to studies of the saiga, another Red Book animal and a symbol of Kazakhstan.
