Cardiovascular markers for predicting clinical outcomes in SARS-CoV-2 infection
Cardiovascular markers for predicting clinical outcomes in SARS-CoV-2 infection
In a recent study posted to the medRxiv* preprint server, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Toronto, Canada, characterized the markers of endothelial function and developed micro ribonucleic acid (miRNA) expression atlas in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-positive and -negative patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). // 15.2.2022

Unavailability of COVID-19 testing linked to greater intentions to engage in risky behavior
Unavailability of COVID-19 testing linked to greater intentions to engage in risky behavior
A research survey of more than 1,100 people in the United States found that when COVID-19 testing wasn't available in their community, participants showed significantly greater intentions to engage in risky behavior, possibly leading to increased transmission of the virus. // 10.2.2022

SARS-CoV-2 infects, replicates, elevates angiotensin II and activates immune cells in human testes
SARS-CoV-2 infects, replicates, elevates angiotensin II and activates immune cells in human testes
Although much has been published since the first cases of COVID-19, there remain unanswered questions regarding SARS-CoV-2 impact on testes and the potential consequences for reproductive health. We investigated testicular alterations in deceased COVID-19-patients, the precise location of the virus, its replicative activity, and the molecules involved in the pathogenesis. We found that SARS-CoV-2 testicular tropism is higher than previously thought and that reliable viral detection in the testis requires sensitive nanosensoring or RT-qPCR using a specific methodology. // 8.2.2022

Covid-19: Past infection may not protect against future variants, researcher warns
Covid-19: Past infection may not protect against future variants, researcher warns
Past infection with covid-19 does not necessarily confer protection against future infection, especially when it comes to the delta and omicron variants, researchers have warned. Wendy Barclay, head of infectious disease at Imperial College London, told an event organised by the Zoe study group1 on 3 February, “Each variant is different from the starting virus, but it’s not necessarily a linear difference. If you can picture in three dimensional space the original Wuhan one sitting in the middle—some of the other variants have sort of gone out from Wuhan but in different directions. The two that are most different from each other are delta and omicron.” She said people who think their past infection will give them good protection against future variants may be … // 7.2.2022

Study shows chronic alcohol consumption as a potential risk factor for SARS-CoV-2-infection
In a study posted to the bioRxiv* preprint server, a team of researchers from Germany studied the expression data of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection-relevant genes such as angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2), and the G-protein coupled receptor Mas in an alcohol-exposed rodent model infected with SARS-CoV-2. // 7.2.2022

Occurrence of relative bradycardia and relative tachycardia in individuals diagnosed with COVID-19
Background: The COVID-19 disease caused by the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS- CoV-2) has become one of the worst global pandemics of the century causing tremendous human and economic suffering worldwide. While considered a respiratory disease, COVID-19 is known to cause cardiac complications. // 3.2.2022

Study discovers how long-term memory T cells are formed after SARS-CoV-2 exposure
Exposure to SARS-CoV-2 by infection or vaccination generates immune cells that provide long-term immunity. These long-lived memory T cells play a key role in preventing severe cases of Covid-19. Researchers at the University of Zurich have now discovered how these memory T cells form. // 2.2.2022
