Equity - Everyone has equitable, affordable and safe sanitation - is one of the six Manila-principles, which provide a framework for action by setting the broad vision for sustainable and inclusive urban sanitation.

VD.195-Water sampling - ( WEDC ).
VD.195-Water sampling - ( WEDC ).

Water is essential for life, but for many people the quality of water available may be poor.

Analysis of a water supply may be required to find out whether the water is safe to drink or whether it needs to be treated before consumption.

Methods of analysing the quality of water are discussed in other films in this series.

It is just as important, however, to ensure that the samples of water tested are representative of the water supply as a whole.

Water sampling is therefore as important an activity as the process of water analysis and is the subject of this film.

VD.03-Groundwater-Groundwater pumping and artesian boreholes - ( BRITISH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY - BGS ).
VD.03-Groundwater-Groundwater pumping and artesian boreholes - ( BRITISH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY - BGS ).

This video discusses how aquifers can be exposed at the surface (unconfined) or buried by overlying rocks and sediments (confined).

Key ideas:

💧 Aquifers are replenished where they are unconfined 💧 Confined aquifers are covered by low permeability rocks 💧 Confining layers may prevent a direct connection between different aquifers 💧 Groundwater in confined aquifers is under pressure 💧 Pumping groundwater from boreholes lowers the water table in the surround aquifer

VD.02-Groundwater-Permeability of rocks - ( BRITISH GEOLOGICAL SURVEY - BGS ).

This video discusses groundwater in terms of the aquifer rock properties; porosity and permeability.

Key ideas:

💧 Aquifer porosity is the total amount of water that it can store 💧 Aquifer permeability is the rate that groundwater flows through 💧 For groundwater to flow easily through the rock (highly permeable) the open spaces must be interconnected

Water is continually moving through the environment – we call this the water cycle. This video talks about an important aspect of the water cycle – groundwater.

Key ideas:

Groundwater forms an important component of the water cycle:

💧 Rainfall infiltrates into the ground to replenish groundwater 💧 Rocks that store groundwater are called aquifers 💧 Groundwater is contained in rocks in the spaces between grains and in cracks 💧 The level of groundwater in an aquifer is called the water table 💧 We monitor groundwater levels using observation boreholes 💧 Groundwater levels vary with time and spatially 💧 Groundwater flows from areas where the water level is high to areas where the water level is low 💧 Flow in many of our rivers is supported by groundwater inflow from aquifers.
