This video describes the Gravity Driven Membrane (GDM) project of Eawag-Sandec in Eastern Uganda.

In this region, the majority of people get their drinking water from Lake Victoria, and the water is very turbid and contaminated. GDM filters remove protozoa, bacteria, viruses and turbidity from the water, making it safe for consumption.

At present, there are five GDM filter kiosk systems in place, and each provides up to 6000 litres of water per day to the schools and local communities.

Faecal sludge dewatering is currently one of the biggest challenges for effective faecal sludge management.

This video explains what dewatering is, why it is so difficult for faecal sludge, and shows some potential solutions for the future.

Water is essential for life, but for many people the quality of water available may be poor.

Analysis of a water supply may be required to find out whether the water is safe to drink or whether it needs to be treated before consumption.

Methods of analysing the quality of water are discussed in other films in this series.

It is just as important, however, to ensure that the samples of water tested are representative of the water supply as a whole.

This video discusses groundwater in terms of the aquifer rock properties; porosity and permeability.

💧 Aquifer porosity is the total amount of water that it can store 💧 Aquifer permeability is the rate that groundwater flows through 💧 For groundwater to flow easily through the rock (highly permeable) the open spaces must be interconnected

Water is continually moving through the environment – we call this the water cycle. This video talks about an important aspect of the water cycle – groundwater.

Groundwater forms an important component of the water cycle:

💧 Rainfall infiltrates into the ground to replenish groundwater 💧 Rocks that store groundwater are called aquifers 💧 Groundwater is contained in rocks in the spaces between grains and in cracks 💧 The level of groundwater in an aquifer is called the water table 💧 We monitor groundwater levels using observation boreholes 💧 Groundwater levels vary with time and spatially 💧 Groundwater flows from areas where the water level is high to areas where the water level is low 💧 Flow in many of our rivers is supported by groundwater inflow from aquifers.
