IMO HOUSING METHOD IS THE MOST SUITABLE FOR NOVICE PIG FARMERS #piggery #agriculture #pigs
IMO HOUSING METHOD IS THE MOST SUITABLE FOR NOVICE PIG FARMERS #piggery #agriculture #pigs
To create a healthy deep bed litter flooring for natural pig farming, you can use indigenous micro-organisms (IMO's). These tiny organisms break down fecal matter quickly, leaving you with a nutrient-rich material and no unpleasant odors or flies. In tropical regions, where pigs and flies are often associated, this is particularly important. To foster the rapid anaerobic digestion of waste, you can make a homemade enzyme/microbe mixture. Micro-organisms are everywhere, playing essential roles in the Earth's cycles of carbon and nitrogen, as well as in decomposing organic matter and recycling waste. They are a vital component of the natural pig farming deep bed system. Here's how you can make your own IMO solution: (A) Take 1 kg of maize meal and mix it with a little water until it forms a ball. Divide this lump into four parts and put each one in a porous plastic bag. Bury the four plastics in four different places on your land for seven days, ensuring that they won't get wet due to rain or attract rats. This will allow the posho to attract (inoculate) microorganisms from the soil. After seven days, you'll notice that the posho has "whitish mold" all over it. (B) Put all four portions of posho together and thoroughly mix them with about 1 kg of sugar. (C) Put this mixture in a perforated plastic bag and hang it in a safe place for another seven days, where there are no rats. Place a bucket or basin just below the hanged plastic to collect the dripping liquid, which you'll need later. (D) After seven days, open up the plastic bag, break up the mixture, and mix it with a little water (about 500ml) until it forms a thick liquid. Add 2 kg of maize bran and 1 kg of sugar, stirring well. Finally, mix in about 200 liters of water in a drum and wait for seven days. Cover the drum with a cloth or used mosquito net to prevent flies and other insects from getting into your solution. After seven days, your IMO solution will be ready to use. It will have a sweet smell and be ready to help maintain a healthy deep bed litter flooring

HELP! My chickens have weird, yellow skin patches!
We have 8 Easter Eggers, and noticed that 1 of them had her feathers along the base of her tail all askew. So I looked carefully and saw this strange yellow skin color, that is also a thickened, and in some places a bit scabby. Also, the feathers in that area are broken off and/or growing...

Zinc deficiency in Chickens
Zinc deficiency in Chickens
Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace mineral needed for the formation of insulin and numerous enzymes in the chicken's body. It is responsible for the catalytic, structural, and regulatory functions in the body. Even mild deficiencies of Zn has been found to have a huge impact on the growth, development, and immune function in chicks. Recent studies have revealed that an extensive amount of changes occur in the chicken's microbiota composition when they suffer from chronic Zn deficient conditions. These changes can result in an over abundance of certain pathogenic, opportunistic bacteria to invade and cause serious disease outbreaks such as GD and NE caused by the overgrowth of Clostridium bacteria. Clinical Signs of Zinc Deficiency Chickens with zinc deficiency often show signs of stunted growth, frizzled feathered, and shortening and thickening of the long bones with enlarged hocks. If the deficiency has occurred for less than a 2 week duration, with prompt treatment, signs associated with the deficiency can be reversed;

Grandpa’s Feeder help
Grandpa’s Feeder help
I had to guide some of them up the ramp at first
I used a fishing sinker for a week or two on the foot plate to stop the lid closing quickly. I had it so I could gradually move it toward the feeder over time which reduced the counterweight effect the chooks got used to using it. I also put some artificial turf under the foot plate so it didn't clank against the tile it sits on. I added more barrier to the sides because some chooks were leaning in over the provided ones, risking injury.

Itching to prescribe the right treatment for scabies: Topical permethrin or oral ivermectin?
Three weeks after confirming the diagnosis of crusted scabies on an HIV-positive patient, I started to scratch while driving in the parking lot at Cooper University Hospital. I didn’t give it much thought until the next day, when this stinging-itching sensation wouldn’t relent (interestingly the scratching felt soooo gooood). I realized that I probably had acquired scabies.
In severe cases, if without contraindication, it may make sense to use both oral ivermectin and permethrin simultaneously

While many owners believe parasites are common causes of skin disorders and feather loss in birds, this is usually not the case. However, Knemidokoptic mange, also called “cere mites” or “scaly face” is a relatively common disorder, particularly in some of the smaller species of birds.
