Faster Air Exchange in Buildings Not Always Beneficial for Coronavirus Levels
Vigorous and rapid air exchanges might not always be a good thing when it comes to levels of coronavirus particles in a multiroom building, according to a new modeling study.
Ventilation and Coronavirus (COVID-19) | Coronavirus (COVID-19) | US EPA
EPA recommends precautions to reduce the potential airborne transmission of the virus, such as ventilation and air filtration as a part of a larger strategy that includes minimizing close contact, surface cleaning, handwashing, and other precautions.
Democratic leaders criticize Biden administration's "outmoded" guidance on aerosol COVID-19 spread
"Four House committee chairs say they have "serious questions" about the adequacy of the CDC's guidance on workplace protection from aerosol transmission." "For the last two weeks, scientists, experts and unions have been prodding the administration to be more specific about guidance on exposure to small aerosol particles that carry COVID-19, which they say the CDC's official guidelines downplay. " "If an emergency temporary standard is deemed necessary by OSHA, it would be the first enforceable nationwide standard for face masks in America's workplaces. "

Mechanisms by Which Ambient Humidity May Affect Viruses in Aerosols
"With prehumidification, recovery rates (± standard deviations) were much higher for nonenveloped viruses (T7 coliphage, 28% ± 19% with prehumidification versus 0.02% ± 0.01% without prehumidification; poliovirus, 29% ± 5% versus 3.2% ± 1.8%) but were unchanged for enveloped viruses (Semliki Forest virus [SFV], 32% ± 7% versus 42% ± 8%; Langat virus, 42% ± 10% versus 51% ± 12%) Benbough attributed the inactivation of nonenveloped viruses to structural rearrangement during abrupt rehydration in the impinger collection medium and suggested that slower rehydration rates, such as those experienced during the prehumidification process, were more favorable for polioviruses and coliphages" "Viruses that partition on the surface of aerosols may be subject to damage due to surface tension, shear stress, and conformational rearrangement driven by hydrophobicity." "Results showed that enveloped viruses lost infectivity dramatically (up to four orders of magnitude) due to aeration, while the nonenveloped ones did not." "Higher RH allows for larger final aerosol size and larger surface area due to less evaporation and, thus, greater potential for surface inactivation of hydrophobic lipid-containing viruses (i.e., enveloped viruses). Nonenveloped viruses are less likely to be affected." "While salts appear to be toxic to enveloped viruses, addition of salts to the medium has been shown to improve rather than reduce the viability of nonenveloped viruses... Benbough (1) suggested that salts can slow the rehydration process ... and thus reduce the chance of structural rearrangements that can be damaging in the capsid of nonenveloped viruses. Our interpretation of the enhanced viability is that salts can keep the aerosol and the virus in it from drying out completely at RHs above the ERH and thus reduce the chance of unwanted structural rearrangements during rehydration. This effect would benefit the nonenveloped viruses that need to retain their structural water; meanwhile, they are not susceptible to damage by salts, as are enveloped viruses."
COVID-19: Critical care and airway management issues - UpToDate
"Some experts, including us, are encouraging that the hospitalized patient with COVID-19 spend as much time as is feasible and safe in the prone position while receiving oxygen or noninvasive modalities of support such a high flow oxygen delivered via nasal cannulae (HFNC) or noninvasive ventilation (NIV)." "Nebulizers are associated with aerosolization and potentially increase the risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission.... If nebulized therapy is used, patients should be in an airborne infection isolation room, and healthcare workers should use contact and airborne precautions" "For patients with COVID-19 who are intubated...we prefer the use of in-line metered dose inhalers (MDIs; ie, pressurized inhalers) rather than administration via a standard jet or vibrating mesh nebulizer due to the lower risk of aerosolization"

LG Household claims safety of its humidifier disinfectant
LG Household & Health Care, South Korea’s leading maker of household goods, said Wednesday that its humidifier disinfectant sold back in the late 1990s did contain potentially harmful chemicals, but that they were used in small amounts that would not cause damage. Earlier in the day, local news agency Newsis had reported that LG’s “119 Humidifier Disinfectant” product sold from 1997 to 2003 had contained benzalk...
