I was already a big fan of @gingerhazing ’s comic, and I got to spend 3+ years helping to shepherd and develop this character, under then director @posborne, alongside an outstanding team of artists at Blue Sky — I have a lot of love for this character, and despite the film’s complicated journey, I’m very happy to see her out in the world… . . For a while, Nimona’s dragon form had a much larger presence in the film. Once we settled on a great design from @aidansugano we needed to start playing around with how to move her. She was an interesting mix of classic Western and serpentine Eastern, with six stubby legs… the first clip was an early run cycle, trying to figure out patterning for the six legs. The second was a rough sequence of flight intensity, from gliding to chaotic, all attempting to stabilize the head...

Even as we were approaching actual shot production there was still a lot to figure out with the “Shadow Creature” — Nimona’s raw, beastial form. @jdturley had done some INCREDIBLE art finding the look of this thing but we hadn’t had any real exploration for how it was going to move. Jeff and @posborne really thought of this thing as a barely contained form, being lost in motion and only taking shape in her stillness. So I wanted to play with that center mass never really solidifying, her head being able to re-emerge anywhere, and feet only solidifying as they make contact. Super fun test, and it went over really well, wish we had been able to see this idea to fruition... . . This was one of the first physicality tests with the official asset once Jin and I got Nimona’s rig in working order. This essentially became our “Big Hero Chair Test”, we had each of the primary characters exiting a castle/fortress in a completely different state of mind and physicality.
