Interleaving - The Learning Superpower 💻📐
Ever feel like you're just cramming info but it doesn't stick? 🙄 Interleaving could be the solution to truly understand and apply what you're learning.
🗃 What is interleaving? Instead of blocking - focusing on just one topic like HTML for hours - you mix it up by alternating between different but related concepts during study sessions.
🤔 Why does it work? Switching contexts activates your brain to reconstruct the knowledge each time, reinforcing those neural connections. It's a muscle workout for making links between ideas!
Here are some dos and don'ts for effectively using interleaving:
👍 DO mix practice problems across topics (HTML, CSS, JavaScript etc.)
👍 DO alternate between subjects like coding and design theory
👍 DO blend skills like layout, typography, color for design or HTML/CSS/JS for coding
👍 DO apply a concept you just learned across a few practice websites/apps
👍 DO review old material alongside any new topics
👎 DON'T interleave unrelated subjects like math and English
👎 DON'T try interleaving too many topics at once (3 is a good max)
👎 DON'T leave large gaps between interleaving sessions
☝ The key is mastering fundamentals first through blocking, then interleaving a few related topics with consistent, short gaps between sessions. This allows comparing/contrasting while avoiding cognitive overload.
🧠 Interleaving keeps you actively engaged by constantly switching contexts. Our brains aren't wired for letting info passively sink in marathon sessions.
Give it a shot - interleaving can level up your tech and design skills! 💪
