Radical journalist and anti-war activist Yves Engler is seeking the leadership of Canada’s NDP based on the claim that this moribund, right-wing social-democratic party can be transformed into an instrument to fight the billionaires, oppose imperialism and its wars, and build “eco-socialism.”

The leadership race in Canada’s New Democratic Party has exposed fractures between workers and professionals and between leader-driven branding and party democracy. Its survival as a serious left-wing force depends on successfully navigating these divides.

It is difficult to imagine Carney’s Liberals collapsing as dramatically as the rudderless Starmer-led UK Labour government. That said, the rise of hard-edged, anti-system populism in Canada will be difficult to prevent unless the centre and left actively confront the deepening gaps in our democratic system before further economic turbulence intensifies the crisis.
