🗻HIKING MOUNT TEIDE, TENERIFE FOR SUNRISE ☀️ - Teide National Park (4K) - YouTube
If you go to Tenerife, one of the main spots you definitely want to go to is the Teide National Park with it's famous volcano Mount Teide.
Of course, the main attraction is the Mount Teide volcano as it's the third biggest island volcano of the world. But you will also find very beautiful trails around the national park.
I did that at first and after I knew the Teide National Park a bit better, I decided to hike the volcano over night to see the sunset. Most people use the cable car to go to the summit, but that requires a permit (it's free but limited) and if you want to see the sunrise, you would need to drive up at around 3-4pm and sleep at the Altavista Mountain Refugio. So to do that you would need to get a permit, book the cable car and book the Altavista in advance.
Way too much planning in my opinion.
So I kept it easy and went up over night. I started around midnight at Montana Blanca and arrived at the top of Mount Teide with a one hour break at the Altavista Mountain Refugio. So the whole trek took me around 7,5 hours.
The way up is pretty easy, as it's an actual path. But I strongly recommend to use walking sticks as it makes going up a lot easier. I didn't even had sore muscles after the trek and I'm not trained and my last hike (only 1,5 hours) was around two months ago. It was the hike to Mount Ijen. See my video about the trip here: http://youtu.be/OVWrT-OCeJo
Also the break at the Altavista Mountain Refugio was very nice as you can get some coffee, soft drink and snacks there. They also have a kitchen and a water cooker if you want to bring some instant soup with you ;-)
So the break is very good to warm up from the cold outside. It's actually important to do a break there as there's a lot of cold wind at the summit of Mount Teide. So you don't want to wait there too long for the sunrise.
When you arrived at the top and see the sunrise, you know that it's worth it. The view is incredible as you are over the clouds and on a not so cloudy day you can see the other canary islands. Even with clouds I was able to see the whole island of Tenerife from the top. Absolutely amazing!
There is also a phenomenon at the opposite side of the sun as there you can see a shadow from the volcano in the form of a triangle. Mount Teide doesn't actually have the form of a triangle. So that looks a bit like a wonder.
To go down again, I used the cable car. I didn't buy a ticket in advance for that and it worked fine. When I arrived down I also had to walk three more kilometers as my car was at the starting point at Montana Blanca.
Altogether it was a very nice and not too hard hike compared to my hike to Mount Agung on Bali one year ago. The only real challenging thing is the cold up there. So be prepared ;-)
