Cyprus Researchers Identify COVID-19 Vaccine as Suspect in Island Nation’s Significant Excess Mortality 2021-2022
A group of medical researchers from Cyprus, as well as the United Kingdom conducted exploratory statistical analysis examining data and patterns involving excess mortality in Cyprus using data tabulations and graphical representations. Why? Because the phenomenon of excess mortality is associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in many countries including this eastern Mediterranean island nation of about 924,000 people. This investigation was designed to assess excess deaths in Cyprus during the pandemic as compared to the average mortality documented in the pre-pandemic period. The team, represented by corresponding authors Demetris Avraam, Department of Public Health, Policy and Systems, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK as well as Elpidoforos S Soteriades, Open University of Cyprus, School of Economics and Management, Healthcare Management Program and colleagues used publicly available data reported by the Cyprus Ministry of Health to the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) to analyze excess mortality over a 7-year period (2016-2022). Information collected by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) on SARS-CoV-2 vaccination doses and COVID-19 related deaths were also analyzed. Published in the boutique and low rated peer reviewed Journal of Community Medicine & Public Health, the authors demonstrate a substantial excess mortality from all causes in the Cyprus population, particularly during 2021 and 2022, even after excluding COVID-19 deaths. TrialSite suggests this verifies at least a few other studies reviewed to date. This increased mortality is particularly seen as compared to the first pandemic year (2020) and the pre-pandemic period. During the third and fourth quarters of 2021, total deaths represented an increase of +34.1% and +11.8%, respectively, while during the first quarter 2022, total deaths were 2365, an increase of +30.7%. We note that this surplus death occurred despite the intensive vaccination against SARS-CoV-2. These recent findings raised serious concerns for the study’s authors as to the “potential impact of the vaccination campaign and other causes on mortality.” The team goes on the record that “a detailed cause-specific investigation of such a significant excess number of deaths is warranted to explore the potential factors leading to this concerning and unexplained increase in population mortality.” Nearly 75% of the Cyprus population were deemed vaccinated at the height of the pandemic. Explaining the rationale for this investigation, the authors report in the peer-reviewed Journal of Community Medicine & Public Health that the COVID-19 pandemic led to a wave of adverse health related consequences, including increased all-cause mortality. The journal is published by Gavin Publishers. A boutique journal that could be deemed predatory based on at least some criteria.
