This collection contains abstracts compiled from original muster rolls for New York State infantry units involved in the Civil War. The records have personal enlistment information and military service, as well as regiment engagements.
New York, Town Clerks' Registers of Men Who Served in the Civil War, ca 1861-1865
The state of New York contributed the greatest number of men to the Union Army during the Civil War and sustained the heaviest losses of any state in the Union. This database contains registers of these men, which were compiled between the years 1861 and 1865, as an organizational aid to award pensions and other veterans claims.
1880 Schedules of Defective, Dependent, and Delinquent Classes
In the 1880 U.S. Federal Census, a supplemental schedule called Dependent, Defective, and Delinquent Classes was included. This schedule included different forms to enumerate the following classes of individuals: Insane Idiots Deaf-mutes Blind Paupers and Indigent persons Homeless children Prisoners
Part of the U.S. Federal Censuses from 1850-1880 included a mortality schedule enumerating the individuals who had died in the previous year. Because each of the censuses from 1850-1880 began on June 1, previous year refers to the 12 months preceding June 1, or June 1 (of the previous year) to May 31 (of the census year).
As with nearly all early state militias, volunteers in the New York state militia during the War of 1812 provided their own arms and clothing. This database is an index of claims presented to the State of New York for payment of expenses for military clothing and equipment provided by volunteers during the war.
Census of Inmates in Almshouses and Poorhouses, New York, 1830-1920
The Tenth Annual Report of the State Board of Charities of the State of New York, released in 1877, reported 64 poorhouses and almshouses in the state housing 12,614 residents. New York State laws in 1875 required these institutions to record details about the individuals in their care on a standard form that was then sent to the State Board of Charities.
This database is a collection of marriage records from the state prior to 1784. Each record contains the names of both bride and groom and marriage date, with the earliest marriage dating to 1660. Reference information is also provided to aid the researcher in obtaining the original record.
Union Soldiers Compiled Service Records, 1861-1865
Compiled service records (CSRs) consist of cards that record information about a soldier extracted by clerks in the War Department from muster rolls, regimental returns, hospital rolls, and other records, with a new card being created each time a soldiers name appeared on a new document. The CSRs may also contain original documents pertaining to the soldier, such as enlistment papers, casualty sheets, and correspondence. A typical CSR will include an envelope that lists a soldiers name, rank, unit, and card numbers, followed by the cards and documents.

The first applications were based on disability or death of a soldier. Beginning in 1871, they were based on service. A veteran's pension file typically includes his rank, place of residence, age or date of birth, and time of service.
