C'est l'une des plus importantes cités scolaires du Nord. Le collège Paul Duez accueille actuellement 650 élèves. Il n’est toutefois plus adapté à un enseignement moderne et ne répond plus aux exigences de qualité thermique et environnementale. Le Département a donc décidé de le reconstruire.Une certification bâtiment durableD'une surface totale de 4 400 m2, le nouveau collège sera doté d'une structure porteuse composée majoritairement de bois, ce qui ne s'est encore jamais vu dans le Nord. Le bois est certes plus coûteux que le béton mais il est aussi beaucoup plus isolant.Esthétique et écologique, ce matériau offre de plus un avantage de taille : sa légèreté. Le site du futur établissement se trouve en effet sur d'anciennes carrières souterraines dont le comblement préalable aux travaux de construction sera financé par la Communauté d'Agglomération de Cambrai et la ville de Cambrai. 1/22/2 Le nouveau collège Paul Duez devrait aussi être le premier à obtenir la certification Haute qualité environnementale bâtiment durable, et la labellisation énergétique "E+ C" (énergie positive et réduction carbone). Cette certification globale intègre l’ensemble des enjeux du développement durable : environnemental, sociétal, économique et numérique.Des locaux confortables et respectueux de la natureConcrètement, cela signifie que les nouveaux bâtiments seront :confortables à utiliser ; composés majoritairement de matériaux issus de ressources naturelles et renouvelables ;économes en énergie et à faible impact environnemental ;respectueux de la végétation située à proximité.Le futur établissement va être construit près de la gare de Cambrai, à côté d'une ancienne halle ferroviaire. Cette dernière sera transformée en salle de sport accessible aux collégiens, et ouverte aux habitants en dehors du temps scolaire. 1/22/2 Un budget de 18 millions d'eurosLe Département va prendre en charge l'intégralité du financement de la construction du collège, soit un investissement de près de 18 millions d'euros. Il financera également 75% du coût de la nouvelle salle de sport.La préparation des travaux de comblement va démarrer au mois d'août. Pour le démarrage du chantier du collège et de la salle de sport, il faudra attendre le printemps prochain. La livraison des deux bâtiments est prévue pour début 2024.Les collèges du Nord, démonstrateurs de la transition écologiqueDepuis 2019, le Département a initié une politique de transition écologique et solidaire intitulée Nord durable. Objectifs : lutter contre le dérèglement climatique, préserver les écosystèmes et promouvoir des modes de vie durables. Les travaux menés dans les collèges par le Département s'inscrivent dans cette stratégie.

L’Institut Pasteur de Lille travaille depuis plusieurs mois sur un projet de repositionnement de médicament, le clofoctol, pour traiter les patients atteints du Covid-19. Après l’avis favorable de l’Agence nationale de sécurité du médicament, l’essai clinique a débuté.
