Adattamento per la televisione di un omonimo racconto di Prosper Mérimée, parte della serie a sei episodi I giochi del diavolo, La Venere d'Ille è l'ultimo film di Mario Bava che completa la regia insieme al figlio Lamberto, qui al suo esordio. Tra surrealismo e atmosfere gotiche, Bava senior dimostra di padroneggiare bene la materia nonostante i limiti imposti dalla piccola produzione, ma la stanchezza è evidente in più di un passaggio e il figlio (come si vedrà in seguito) non è in grado di raccoglierne l'eredità. Rimane comunque una trama narrativa inusuale, per meriti però quasi tutti da attribuire alla fonte letteraria, rispettata piuttosto fedelmente.
