A few hours ago, Google published a white paper laying out their vision for the Future of Learning. Here's the TLDR:
The Headline:
Global learning is at a crossroads: learner outcomes have dropped sharply worldwide, and UNESCO projects a shortage of 44 million teachers by 2030.
AI is positioned as *the* tool to save us from an impending education crisis BUT...
The real "secret weapon" for improving education isn't the tech: it's the learning science we build into it.
According to Google, the four biggest opportunities offered by AI in education are:
๐ฅ Learning Science at Scale โ Embed evidence-based methods (retrieval practice, spaced repetition, active feedback) directly into everyday tools.
๐ฅ Making Anything Learnable โ Adjust explanations, examples and complexity to meet each learner where they are.
๐ฅ Universal Access โ Break down language, literacy and disability barriers through AI-powered translation and transformation.
๐ฅ Empowering Educators โ Free up teacher time through AI-assisted lesson planning, resource creation and differentiation.
Overall, Google's latest white paper signals an evolving ed-tech culture which centres on a more substantive partnership between ed & tech:
Co-Creation: Google commits to investing in evidence-based approaches to learning design and development and to rigorous evaluation, pilot studies and educator-led research to test and demo impact.
Collaborative Development: Google commits to working with schools, NGOs, researchers and learning scientists to co-design tools for learning.
You can read the white paper in full using the link in comments.
Happy innovating!

TeachLM: six key findings from a study of the latest AI model fine-tuned for teaching & learning.
TeachLM: six key findings from a study of the latest AI model fine-tuned for teaching & learning.
LLMs are great assistants but ineffective instructional designers and teachers. This week, researchers at Polygence + Stanford Universityย publishedย a paper on a new model โ TeachLM โ which was built to address exactly this gap.
In my latest blog post, I share the key findings from the study, including observations on what it tells us about AIโs instructional design skills.
Hereโs the TLDR:
TeachLM outperformed generic LLMs on six key education metrics, including improved question quality & increased personalisation
๐ฅTeachLM also outperformed โEducational LLMsโ - e.g. Anthropicโs Learning Mode, OpenAIโs Study Mode and Googleโs Guided Learning - which fail to deliver the productive struggle, open exploration and specialised dialogue required for substantive learning
TeachLM flourished at developing some teaching skills (e.g. being succinct in its comms) but struggled with others (e.g. asking enough of the right sorts of probing questions)
Training TeachLM on real educational interactions rather than relying on prompts or synthetic data lead to improved model performance
TeachLM was trained primarily for delivery, leaving significant gaps in its ability to โdesign the right experienceโ, e.g. by failing to define learnersโ start points and goal
Overall, human educators still outperform all LLMs, including TeachLM, on both learning design and delivery

โ AI futures arenโt just about intelligence scores โ they push us to rethink what โknowingโ really means. And the whole debate isnโt only technical but philosophical: how do we define learning, progress, and human identity in an AI age?
AI in schools and universities is not inevitable โ education systems have choices, agency, and the power to shape direction. The core tension here: opportunity for reinvention vs. risks of over-automation and cultural bias.
โ Classrooms canโt be reduced to data points โ AI must respect the incomputable nature of learning. And hyper-personalization risks turning education into an isolated bubble rather than a social dialogue.
Teachers remain the backbone of education โ AI should amplify their work, not sideline it. Building AI โwithโ educators, not โforโ them, is the only path to trust and adoption.
AI in schools demands an ethics of care โ transparent, fair, and accountable by design. Governance canโt be outsourced to tech โ it requires democratic oversight and public participation.
โ AI can close divides โ but only if it is localized, contextualized, and designed for inclusion. Without clarity, bias will persist: marginalized groups risk being left behind.
Policy must keep pace with fast-moving AI capabilities, balancing human and machine intelligence.
AI will shape every industry โ but in education, it will shape society itself.

How long will the traditional course survive in the workplace? I give it 2-5 years. Let me explain.
When I say a โtraditional courseโ, I mean learning content (instructor-led or self-service) delivered online or face-to-face either, going from beginning to end with little variation in content or delivery.
These courses have been the mainstay of training at work since I started in the classroom in the 1980s.
For some, the idea that the traditional course is doomed come as a shock. For others, itโs self-evident. Listening to researchers, experts and practitioners like Dani Johnson, Dr Philippa Hardman and Gregg Collins, I am convinced that within 5 years most organisational training will abandon these traditional courses.
Why?
It is now easy to personalise content, even in a simple fashion, with AI. With extra effort, you can deliver content via adaptive delivery that understands where you are succeeding and failing and changes what you learn, and how you learn it, to ensure you reach competency faster. Itโs more effective, more enjoyable, and faster.
All of this is already happening, and it's only going to get easier and more wide-spread.
But the real drive will come not from the technology, but from the learners. The technology enables the change. The learners will demand it. Once enough people have experienced content delivered with this flexibility โ probably initially in their private lives, as consumers โ they will start to ask why their employers arenโt delivering content the same way.
So I have three questions for you this Friday:
Do you agree that the traditional course doomed?
If so, is the timescale of 2-5 years reasonable?
What are the implications of all this?
Iโd love to hear your thoughts.
