💡Anthropic has launched the Anthropic Economic Index to study the impact of AI on labor markets, using data from anonymized conversations on Claude.ai. (my favourable creative writing buddy). The initial report analyzes a million conversations to understand how AI is being used in real-world tasks. Key findings include: AI use is concentrated in software development and technical writing. About 36% of occupations see AI used in at least 25% of their tasks, while only 4% use it for over 75% of tasks. AI is used more for augmentation (enhancing human capabilities) than for automation (directly performing tasks). AI is most prevalent in mid-to-high wage occupations, like computer programming and data science. The study matched conversations with Claude to specific work-related tasks from the U.S. Department of Labor's O*NET database. They found the highest AI adoption in "computer and mathematical" roles, followed by "arts, design, sports, entertainment, and media". Occupations involving physical labor had the least AI representation. The report also found that AI use was low in both low-paying and very-high-paying jobs, with mid-to-high salary ranges showing the heaviest AI use. Overall, augmentation was slightly more common than automation. The study acknowledges limitations, such as uncertainty about whether Claude was used for work-related tasks and a focus on Claude.ai users only. Anthropic plans to regularly update the index with new data to track changes in AI's impact on the job market. They are also openly sharing the dataset used for the analysis and encourage feedback and suggestions for future research. Important to note: This usage patterns may vary for other AI Companions.
