American police
Black Americans being victimized and killed by the police is an epidemic. A truth many Americans are acknowledging since the murder of George Floyd, as protests have occurred in all fifty states calling for justice on his behalf. But this tension between African American communities and the police has existed for centuries. This week, the origins of American policing and how those origins put violent control of Black Americans at the heart of the system.

The Rebellion in Defense of Black Lives Is Rooted in U.S. History. So Too Is Trump’s Authoritarian Rule | Intercepted on Acast
With the threat of a widespread military deployment in U.S. cities looming, the president is acting as an authoritarian dictator. Dr. Keisha Blain, author of "Set the World on Fire: Black Nationalist Women and the Global Struggle for Freedom," discusses the history of black rebellion against police violence, the deadly ‘Red Summer” of 1919, and the life of Ida B. Wells. Dr. Blain, a history professor at the University of Pittsburgh, also discusses the context of various protests tactics and the weaponization of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Police forces across the U.S. are functioning as violent militias equipped with military gear. Operating like a violent counterinsurgency force, the government has used drones and is using other military and intelligence-grade surveillance systems on protesters. Stuart Schrader, author of "Badges Without Borders: How Global Counterinsurgency Transformed American Policing" and a lecturer at Johns Hopkins, analyzes the long and intertwined history between policing in the U.S. and abroad. Schrader also discusses the context of U.S. military deployment on American soil and the long tradition of militarized police forces. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

From George Floyd to Chris Cooper: Ibram X. Kendi on “Racist Terror” Facing Black People in America
From George Floyd to Chris Cooper: Ibram X. Kendi on “Racist Terror” Facing Black People in America
“I can’t breathe” — that’s what George Floyd, an unarmed African American man, repeatedly told a white Minneapolis police officer who pinned him to the ground Monday with a knee to his neck. Video of the police attack went viral. Now four officers have been fired. This comes as another video went viral of a white woman calling the cops on a Black man in New York City’s Central Park and falsely accusing him of “threatening her life” after he asked her to leash her dog. We discuss these developments and more with Ibram X. Kendi, founding director of the Antiracist Research and Policy Center at American University and National Book Award–winning author of “Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America” and “How to Be an Antiracist.”

DC Resident Describes Experience with Police - DC Native
DC residents actively working for police reform in the District of Columbia have been trying to get the DC City Council to hold a hearing that would allow their fellow residents to testify about their experience with the police. The good news is the DC Council’s Judiciary Committee is holding an Oversight Roundtable on policing for next Thursday, July 12th. The bad news is that event was announced less than a week ago, giving activists very little time to get the word out to those who might like to testify. Fortunately, Grassroots DC managed to capture some testimony on our own. Footage was shot by Just Jones, Josh the Girl and Liane Scott. It was edited by Miheema Goodine and Liane Scott. Information about the roundtable and how to participate follows:: Councilmember Charles Allen, Chairperson Committee on the Judiciary & Public Safety Announces a Public Oversight Roundtable on Policing and Public Safety In Wards 7 and 8 Thursday, July 12, 2018 9:30 a.m. Room 412, John A. Wilson Building 1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20004 Reconvening at 5:00 p.m. Deanwood Recreation Center 1350 49th Street, N.E. Washington, D.C. 20019 The Committee seeks testimony from residents on topics related to policing and public safety, to include community policing; stops and frisks; the use of force; de-escalation strategies; gun recovery tactics; policing public space; and police presence in the community. Government witnesses will be heard in the morning session, and public witnesses are welcome at both the morning and evening sessions. Anyone wishing to testify at the roundtable should contact the Committee via email at judiciary@dccouncil.us or at (202) 724-7808, and provide their name, telephone number, organizational affiliation, and title (if any), by close of business Tuesday, July 10. Public witnesses who do not wish to be featured on camera can have their names and likenesses obscured, and they should so indicate when registering.

"Cold-Blooded Murder": Chicago Police Officer Shot 13-Year-Old Adam Toledo with His Hands in the Air
"Cold-Blooded Murder": Chicago Police Officer Shot 13-Year-Old Adam Toledo with His Hands in the Air
Protesters in Chicago took to the streets to condemn the police killing of Adam Toledo, a 13-year-old Latinx boy, after bodycam video released by the Chicago police showed Toledo had his hands up in the air when a police officer shot him dead on March 29. Police initially described the incident as an "armed confrontation," but the video shows Toledo raised his hands after being ordered to do so. He was killed within 20 seconds of the officer leaving his car to chase him down a dark alley following a report of gunshots in the area. "A Chicago police officer murdered Adam Toledo, a 13-year-old. There is no other way to describe what we saw in the video," says Rey Wences, a community organizer based in Chicago's Little Village. We also speak with Rossana Rodríguez-Sanchez, a Chicago alderperson, who says city officials spent weeks disparaging Adam Toledo before releasing the bodycam footage. "Lori Lightfoot ran as a reformer. She ran on transparency," Rodríguez-Sanchez says of Chicago's mayor. "She's doing exactly the opposite of that." #DemocracyNow Democracy Now! is an independent global news hour that airs on nearly 1,400 TV and radio stations Monday through Friday.
