US district judge Thomas Parker grants temporary injunction, finding the law clashes with first amendment on free speech

A new rule proposed by the Biden administration would prevent schools and colleges from enacting outright bans on transgender athletes, but it would allow certain limits to promote fairness or reduce injuries.

A Kansas proposal with some of the nation's broadest bathroom restrictions and a ban on transgender people changing their driver's licenses has cleared the Republican-controlled Legislature. The state Senate voted 28-12 on Tuesday with one vote more than a two-thirds majority that would be needed to override Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s expected veto. The action came the same day Arkansas lawmakers sent Republican Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders a scaled back bathroom bill of their own with criminal penalities. Both are among several hundred measures aimed at rolling back LGBTQ rights pursued by Republicans this year across the U.S. The Kansas measure deals with bathrooms, locker rooms and other facilities.

Queer and trans youth led actions across the United States Friday, marking International Transgender Day of Visibility amid intensifying discrimination, violence and anti-trans laws pushed by Republicans. Here in New York, hundreds took to the streets in a march organized by NYC Youth for Trans Rights. Democracy Now! producers Tey-Marie Astudillo and María Taracena were there and spoke to 17-year-old Raven. Raven: “It is so amazing to look around and see people like me that have had the same experiences as me, who know what it’s like to be trans. And it’s so great to just, you know, watch everybody be happy and be themselves in a safe place. … I’m the happiest I’ve been in a really, really long time here in this space with these people. And I think that it’s so good for people who think that they’re alone to know that they have people out there, people fighting for them, people fighting with them, people on their side, because, like, a lot of them just don’t have that. They go through so, so, so much. And gathering around, being able to look at people and hug people and talk to people that are like them, is something that can really heal the heart.”

A state representative announced she identifies as nonbinary, gender-nonconforming on Monday during a House Appropriations Committee discussion of a Republican bill that would prohibit school employees from calling students by their preferred pronouns or a name not listed on their school record without parental consent.

Governor Eric Holcomb will have the option to sign or veto Senate Bill 480.

An overwhelming share of America’s lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender adults (92%) say society has become more accepting of them in the past decade

Research has historically found American Indian/Alaskan Native and White non-Hispanic individuals to be at highest risk for suicide (Curtin & Hedegaard, 2019). In 2017 the age-adjusted rate of death by suicide per 100,000 people was significantly higher for American Indian/Alaskan Native (22.15) and White non-Hispanic individuals (17.83), compared to Black (6.85), Asian/Pacific Islander (6.75), and Hispanic (6.89) individuals (NCHS, 2017). Given differences in suicidality by race/ethnicity and the finding that LGBT youth are morethan four times more likely to attempt suicide compared to peers (Kann et al., 2018; Johns et al., 2019), there is a need to examine how race/ethnicity impacts suicide risk among LGBTQ youth. Past studies on intersectional identities among LGBTQ youth have been limited due to difficulties obtaining large, diverse samples. This brief draws from The Trevor Project’s National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health (The Trevor Project, 2019) with over 25,000 respondents to examine suicide attempts by race/ethnicity and gender identities .

Transgender people face extraordinary levels of physical and sexual violence, whether on the streets, at school or work, at home, or at the hands of government officials. More than one in four trans people has faced a bias-driven assault, and rates are higher for trans women and trans people of color. NCTE is working with anti-violence groups, women’s rights groups, racial justice groups, and federal and state law enforcement agencies to combat anti-trans violence. This effort cannot be limited to just Transgender Day of Remembrance. Public education, policy change and community efforts are needed to address the complex causes of anti-trans violence and ensure victims can receive support.
