Analyses of death records over the two decades in the United States reported greater mortality from infectious and parasitic diseases, injuries and respiratory and cardiovascular diseases associated with exposures to flooding events, particularly floods caused by tropical cyclones and heavy rain.

As our organization grows larger and more diverse, we work to expand the language we use to tell our story.

Meehan and colleagues study access to running water in large US cities since 1970, finding that the 2008 financial crisis worsened household ‘plumbing poverty’ in many cities. This disproportionately impacted households of color and generally squeezed lower-income households into more precarious living situations.

The health of the planet and its people are at risk. The deterioration of the global commons—ie, the natural systems that support life on Earth—is exacerbating energy, food, and water insecurity, and increasing the risk of disease, disaster, displacement, and conflict. In this Commission, we quantify safe and just Earth-system boundaries (ESBs) and assess minimum access to natural resources required for human dignity and to enable escape from poverty. Collectively, these describe a safe and just corridor that is essential to ensuring sustainable and resilient human and planetary health and thriving in the Anthropocene.

To protect the well-being of older persons, the international human rights community must draw on established human rights principles while addressing the unique needs associated with this stage of the life course.

Filling the need for trusted information on national health issues

Over the past decade, social policies have undergone significant change. The main policy focus for nonelderly families has been toward encouraging greater work effort, with the expectation that full-time employment, along with some social supports, would enable families to earn enough to provide for their families. Although self-sufficiency can be an illusive concept, there is some consensus that families would need to have incomes above 200 percent of the federal poverty level in order to cover basic household expenses consistently (about $42,000 for a family of four).1

Using data collected by Axios-Ipsos in the fall of 2020, this report examines the impact of COVID-19 on LGBT people ages 45 and older. The report also explores differences related to race and ethnicity among older LGBT and non-LGBT people.
