The GOP has been going with a "don't trust the government" line for decades. Trump is just adding implied violence to the mix.

He is an avatar of straight white male fears.

Trump isn't anti-science in the same way as some members of his party; he just doesn't care about objective reality because he's such a narcissist he's almost a solipsist.

That was a mediocre at best debate performance. He came across as petulant and dismissive.
