This fits my white experience, especially the part about not talking about race or emphasizing a watered down multiculturalism without addressing structural problems.
Seems like the main concern is that people worry about the increased price — but it would be possible to make food assistance exempt from any tax. (Forcing people on food assistance to be vegetarian would be much more concerning.)
I see this tone a lot in articles that try to explain why people vote or poll a certain way, that it's not something they really think or believe but just something they've been manipulated into saying.
