Interesting historical analysis that focuses on the failures of the German left to recognize and unite in opposition against the National Socialists. They seem to be trying to connect the situation then with the plight of workers now, but the Great Recession was a very different beast and unions are nearly crippled at least in the US.
If ISIS Had a Bomb That Could Put the East Coast Underwater…
These kind of inflammatory headlines make a good point: climate change remains too abstract for us to see as a threat in the same way as nebulous fears of terrorism.
I think tech is part of the solution, but it only slows hurtling towards the cliff, and doesn't address the aspect of uneven impacts of climate change. I do think a carbon tax would help individuals overcome their selfish interests to accurately price carbon costs.
Good points, and I'm sure I was clueless for a long time. I identify TNG as emphasizing inclusiveness and equality, but it did this without representation, which is a problem. I think this connects to how my multicultural education growing up similarly emphasized equality but didn't actually consider things from a non-white perspective.
Why the Economic Fates of America’s Cities Diverged - The Atlantic
I think there are some correlation/causation issues here, but overall the point about how much the US economy has shifted to favor certain cities is huge. I've run into this somewhat with the resistance to having remote workers.
Why New York Subway Lines Are Missing Countdown Clocks
In not surprised that regulatory capture (by unions and contractors) is a big part of why projects metastasize. I wonder if this contributes to cavalier attitudes in tech community? Fascinating details on the system. I wonder if it's Turing complete...
This is an astounding story that I'd heard bits and pieces of. We badly need a law enforcement recourse for Internet harassment (since it's international), and every SWAT member should know what a swatting is and what it looks like.
