I had no idea we almost had basic income under Nixon! Where was this in my AP US class? Not to mention how bad Moynihan got. Some good new terms: penal welfarism; carceral state; compounded deprivation. "families are social structures existing within larger social structures". I'm almost certain calling the system the Gray Wastes is a reference to Planescape.
