The Last, Great, Gasp of the American Station Wagon - Technology - The Atlantic
The Last, Great, Gasp of the American Station Wagon - Technology - The Atlantic
Striking to me how much the station wagon was tied to the brief era between WWII and the oil crisis, because of things like fuel standards. I do quibble with his conclusion that modern parents have a stigma against wagons - new parents my age would have missed that era already, growing up with minivans (which is another stigma).

"I used to think that we needed to create a world where every child had an equal chance to get to the Ivy League. I’ve come to see that what we really need is to create one where you don’t have to go to the Ivy League, or any private college, to get a first-rate education."

I think I've read all of these except The Courtship of Princess Leia, which I was aware of indirectly because of my book on ships. Fond memories getting these from the library.

This is so messed up, even ignoring the myriad flaws with standardized testing. We require the tests, and then fail to fund the ability to pass those tests, both in terms of the books and other material, and the staff to buy, distribute, and manage that inventory (not to mention teacher hours and pay). I think this is a structural problem tied to setting standards nationally, but funding schools locally. Either we need universal funding, or no standards. The standards themselves are also clearly a handout to the publishing industry, since they can write once, sell everywhere.
