modernity is stupid: a rant not about politics
modernity is stupid: a rant not about politics
I self host and it's kind of maddening
My dentist gets on me about flossing and I want to be like, motherfucker when? I know it’s only a couple of minutes a day but do you know how few minutes we all have?? Did you know the earth is going up in flames??? And you want me to FLOSS???? And host my own read-later service????? Why is this the reality we live in?????? Butlerian jihad when???????
I have wanted to figure out my will for approximately eight years, and I know that because that is how long ago I got married and we were like “ha ha we should do that soon” and then simply never did. Because life is so complicated, my guy.
Why do I know what Maciej thinks?? Why do I know that DHH is a fucking creep and a weirdo
The modern world is unbelievably stupid, and if you don’t pay attention to the stupidity when something bad happens someone shows up in your notifications all like, well what did you expect.

A Quick Snapshot of the Microblogging Landscape
A Quick Snapshot of the Microblogging Landscape
So given the post-election swell of BlueSky and Threads…and a far more modest but existent swell of new users to the Fediverse, it feels like the battle to be a non-X/Twitter microblogging solution is coming into view. Threads and BlueSky, each seeing a recent momentum of over 1 milliion users per day are the clear top two. Notable that both Theads and Bluesky are built with the open social web, and decentralized open tech features are either inherently part of both, or soon will be.

Why are we using LLMs as calculators?
Why are we using LLMs as calculators?
This is all so silly. Maybe there is interesting stuff there but in the meantime we're boiling the ocean for wrong answers.
Humans have been inventing machines to mostly do math for milennia, and it’s only recently that computing tasks have moved up the stack from calculations to higher human endeavors like writing, searching for information, and shitposting.
