@ianbremmer Meaningless drivel. The Germans aren’t going to increase military spending. Even if they did, (and they won’t, not meaningfully), it wouldn’t enable them to act independently of the U.S.. The Germans are in their current predicament as a result of bad decisions in the past.

@ianbremmer Great! Let's close down all U.S. military bases and bring all the 50,000 troops and personnel home! But I wonder how Germany is going to make up the 2.3 billion dollars of economic activity they provide.

@ianbremmer Germany outsourced their electricity price to a country called Russia. Germany outsourced their national defense to the USA. Neither was a particularly good idea. What they need to do is develop cheap sources of energy (that don’t rely on Russia). And build a strong military.

@ianbremmer But it was never normal for the US to unconditionally guarantee Europe’s security. Germany—and the entire EU—should have invested much more, much earlier, to function as an equal partner to the US. Why should only American soldiers die for Europe’s security? That never made sense

@ianbremmer Keynes wrote in 1919 that destroying the econ of Germany the engine of Europe would lead to another war. What Trump has done with Germany is analogous. Instead of nurturing an 80 year old partnership he decided to antagonize the engine of Europe. What a historical mistake.

@raitzin @ianbremmer I am not sure how happy Trump will be when Europe stops buying US weapons because they now want to spend their 500 Billion annual defense budget inside Europe. They don’t trust the US anymore and you can’t blame them.

@ianbremmer This is the new reality. I grew up in the western part of Germany, close to France and the Netherlands. Since my childhood, the US has always been our natural point of reference—for culture, food, politics, and our entire way of life. Not anymore.

@ianbremmer Unintentionally, Trump pushed Germany to become the next great European and global power. The German defense industry has a chance to grow the German economy. Center of power gravity in Europe will probably shift to Germany, Poland and the Baltic states.
