Trump promised a golden age. He lied to you. And he will lie again tonight. The indiscriminate #TrumpTariffs on Canada and Mexico are increasing consumer prices, tanking the markets, and slowing down the economy. Trump is increasing the risk of #stagflation. #TrumpSlump

President Trump's new 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, along with a doubling of duties on Chinese goods to 20%, took effect, sparking trade wars that could impact economic growth and lift prices for Americans https://t.co/CYXgM0Vet9

The German fiscal package is massive (10-20% GDP). - 500 billion 10Y fund for public investment - All defence spending above 1% of GDP not counted for debt brake. - Federal states can borrow 0.35% p.y. for investment. Germany is back - economically +militarily. 1/x

CDU (Merz) and SPD (Klingbeil) CSU (Söder) just gave the presser. Big question is whether greens will sign up - my guess is yes. Focus of the package is on defence and infrastructure. But money is fungible: tax cuts can be paid by reshuffling stuff into special fund. 2/x

Germany was stuck in a macroeconomic rut - a situation unique in its post-Cold War history. Private household consumption and industrial production always grew in line with German GDP, alternating as engines of growth. That was no longer the case (see chart). 3/x

Lots of focus on bureaucracy but big shocks really were energy, consumers/firms saving into a multi-year stagnation (paradox of thrift), and China's industrial policy + renewed export-led growth hammering Germany key sectors' exports. Germany = an economy needing demand 4/x

So I'm confident big fiscal will rekindle the German growth engine. A balanced package of defence (consensus), industrial policy (social-democrat prio) public investment (consensus) and tax cuts (christian-democrat prio) will drive op demand, consumption and growth. 5/x

German industrial production declined for years. Private consumption never recovered from the pandemic shock. A fiscal policy that targets both will help. So after years of (rightly) not expecting growth, I’m raising my German growth estimates: Germany is back. 6/x

The economically illiterate debt brake, in its current form, is not back - thankfully. It will survive in name, but with defence spending at say 3% (2/3 exempt) plus a €500bn infrastructure fund for 10y. Plus there is a commitment to further reforms down the line. 7/7

Americans have been negatively polarised into thinking Putin isn't that bad--he's just a guy standing up for his country. They're wrong. He's as bad as it gets. In 50 yrs his name will heard like Stalin's is today. Westerners who carry water for him will be permanently stained.
