Totally agree. Given the competence level of Trump and those around him, the far greater danger than the US becoming an effective authoritarian state over the next months and years is that it descends into chaos. That would have huge implications for Europe.

A Trump administration that by a combination of mass sackings, mass resignations and widespread demoralisation destroys the US civil service will find itself pulling policy levers only for nothing coherent to happen on the ground. Not a fascist state but rather a shattered state

Het geweld tegen Israëlische supporters in binnenstad Amsterdam heeft veel stof doen opwaaien en tot veel angst geleid binnen de joodse gemeenschap. Om dat goed te begrijpen, hierbij wat historische achtergronden. 1

De joodse gemeenschap is een van de kleinste van ons land, maar leeft al decennialang noodgedwongen met permanente beveiliging. Alle synagogen, scholen, bejaardentehuizen zijn beveiligd. Een schoolreisje of jeugduitje is altijd met beveiligers. 2

Israëlische gebouwen in NL kennen lange geschiedenis van aanslagen. In 1969 bomaanslag Israëlische ambassade Den Haag, in 1982 werden er granaten naar gegooid. El Al-kantoor op Rokin Amsterdam werd in 1985 getroffen door een spijkerbom en kreeg vrijwel jaarlijks bommeldingen. 3

Deze aanslagen kwamen uit hoek internationaal terrorisme. Beperkte zich niet tot Israëlische doelen. Joden werden als verlengstuk Israël gezien en dus legitiem doelwit. In 1980 bomaanslag synagoge Parijs (4 doden), 1981 synagoge Antwerpen (3 doden) en synagoge Wenen (2 doden). 5

Dit zorgde voor grote angst in joodse gemeenschap NL. In 1981 werden personen uit M-Oosten opgepakt in Rotterdam en Amsterdam met gegevens over locaties synagogen in NL. Aanvankelijk is er enige politiebescherming, maar houdt snel op. Ministerie vindt extra beveiliging onnodig. 6

Burgemeester Wim Polak van Amsterdam snapt de zorgen, maar geeft aan veiligheid joden niet helemaal te kunnen garanderen. Joodse gemeenschap gaat vanaf dat moment zelf voor beveiliging zorgen. Drukt zwaar op de begroting van joodse gemeenten. 7

Vanaf begin jaren 1990 wordt de druk wat minder. Vredesproces in M-Oosten zorgt aanvankelijk voor afnemende dreiging. Na mislukking daarvan in 2000 weer terug. Onder invloed IS/Daesh nieuwe golf dodelijke aanslagen. 8

2012 op joodse school Toulouse, 2014 kosjere supermarkt Parijs en Joods Museum Brussel, 2015 synagoge Kopenhagen. In die context gaat NLse overheid er eindelijk toe over om voor structurele beveiliging joodse gemeenschap te zorgen, naast interne systeem. 9

Sinds 7 oktober 2023 spanning en angst verhevigd. Elders in Europa zijn joodse centra al doelwit geworden (Berlijn, La Grande-Motte), grote zorg dat dit ook in NL gebeurt. Dat geweld tegen Israëlische supporters uit eigen stad kwam, vergroot dat. Sociale cohesie staat op spel. 10
