@TheEconomist The American Presidentd to go hard on tariffs before Trump was Herbert Hoover with the Smoot-Hawley Act in 1930. He cranked up taxes on over 20,000 imports, thinking it would help, but it backfired. Other countries clapped back with their own tariffs, trade took a nosedive, and
