AI video generators are nearing a crucial tipping point
You may have noticed some impressive video memes made with AI in recent weeks. Harry Potter reimagined as a Balenciaga commercial and nightmarish footage of Will Smith eating spaghetti both recently went viral. They highlight how quickly AI’s ability to create video is advancing, as well as how problematic some uses of the technology may be.
Augmented Reality is transforming vision itself. Wearable hardware like AR-enhanced glasses will accelerate this transformation, enabling computers to model and interpret everything we encounter. After receiving early access to Snap’s AR Spectacles, Modem collaborated with creative studio oio to explore this new way of seeing — prototyping an interface that lets us interact with the world by simply looking at it.

The long read: Artificial intelligence in its current form is based on the wholesale appropriation of existing culture, and the notion that it is actually intelligent could be actively dangerous

Okay, so that AI letter signed by lots of AI researchers calling for a "Pause [on] Giant AI Experiments"? It's just dripping with #Aihype. Here's a quick rundown. — @emilymbender@dair-community.social on Mastodon (@emilymbender) March 29, 2023
The Hypermarket of Information Happy New Year… Sorry for being away for two months. I have been working hard and absorbing so much stuff that I’m excited to...
The Problem With AI Is the Problem With Capitalism
Workers’ fear of new artificial intelligence technology makes sense: that technology has the potential to eliminate their jobs. But if we didn’t live under capitalism, AI could be used to liberate us from drudgery rather than hurl us into poverty.
The Meaning of “Vision” and “Image” in the Age of AI - Feral File - Close-Ups
On the occasion of For Your Eyes Only, curator Domenico Quaranta discusses machine vision, operational images, and the future of human visual culture with Antonio Somaini, professor in film, media, and visual culture theory at the Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris 3.
classroom exercise: introduction to machine learning
I’m teaching Machine Learning at Pratt Institute’s School of Information this semester (syllabus here). For the first day of class, I wanted to have a sort of physical or paper-based exercise that demonstrates the concept of machine learning to people totally new to the subject. I experienced this non-computer-based approach to introducing computation through Zach Lieberman’s coding class at the School for Poetic Computation, where we started off by playing the Human Fax Machine Experiment which revolves around the concepts of encoding and decoding. How does one apply this approach to machine learning? There are some very intuitive digital introductory material that illustrate neural networks or decision trees, but I wanted something more tangible.

2023 Design in Tech Report: Design and Artificial Intelligence
Key Thoughts Designers tend to care about people as people. Instead of just as prospects or customers. Design as a field has evolved to speak more machine, more scale, and more $$$s. A lot of work …
Participatory Design of AI Systems: Opportunities and Challenges Across Diverse Users, Relationships, and Application Domains | Extended Abstracts of the 2022 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems
I am a cognitive scientist researching human behaviour, social systems, and responsible and ethical Artificial Intelligence (AI). I recently finished my PhD, where I explored the challenges and pitfalls of automating human behaviour through critical examination of existing computational models and audits of large scale datasets. You can read my thesis here.
