Satellite phones, as the name implies, uses satellite signals to operate, where as conventional cellular phones use terrestrial signals from cell towers to communicate. Relatively, satellite phones are expensive when compared with other types of phones, however satellite phones have wide geographical foot print and could be used where terrestrial signals are unavailable or not feasible.
