North Texas institutions and school districts have used monitoring technology to surveil student online activity, including UNT which used the software from 2015 to 2018.
Social Sentinel, now under Navigate 360, was created in 2014 with the purpose of surveilling social media for students at risk of harming themselves or others. However, a Dallas Morning News article published last month said institutions have used the service outside of that purpose.
“We did find that [Social Sentinel] had been used [by universities] to monitor protests and demonstrations,” said Ari Sen, one of the writers of the DMN article.
UNT purchased a three-year contract with Social Sentinel for $45,000. Police Chief Ed Reynolds said the department did not renew the contract because they “found it to be redundant” to the work the department was doing to monitor social media.
“UNT’s primary focus was looking for individuals who were potentially using their social media as a cry for help and needed referral to [the] UNT CARE team to intervene and prevent self-harm,” Reynolds said in an email to the North Texas Daily. “UNT Police did not use the service to monitor specific protests, groups, individuals or use it to make arrests.”
Multiple universities in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex have used Social Sentinel over the years. The only institution in North Texas still using the service is North Central Texas College.
Nicole Shaw, the current chief of police for NCTC, told Sen that their police department uses Social Sentinel to monitor protests.
Reynolds and Shaw said their departments never used Social Sentinel to monitor emails. Shaw also said surveillance past what is publicly available would only be accessible to the department through a search warrant.
James Fitch, the former NCTC Police chief, purchased the software in 2016 and the department has renewed its contract with Social Sentinel every year since then.
“We are such a small department that having dedicated personnel just to check social media was absolutely not feasible,” Shaw said. “So, this company does that for us — checking the social media sites, letting us know of some keywords that might be of interest.”
Shaw also said Social Sentinel has not been used in their Denton County campuses but the service has been used elsewhere.
Texas school districts also use these monitoring services. Alongside Social Sentinel, some of the most widely used services include Securly, GoGuardian and Gaggle. “More than 200 districts statewide have used these technologies” in the past six years, according to a DMN article.
A recent example would be Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which experienced one of the deadliest school shootings in the United States. Uvalde ISD employed Social Sentinel from 2019 to 2020.
Social Sentinel and similar software are marketed with the goal of student safety. However, these services have been criticized for a lack of evidence regarding their effectiveness. What the service is being used for is also generally unknown to both students and parents.
“Those sorts of services here in North Texas might be used for email monitoring, Google Docs monitoring — there are some that even allow the teacher to see what a student is doing on their Chromebook remotely,” Sen said.
Currently, Krum ISD and Ponder ISD use Gaggle, and Denton ISD used the service in 2008, but it is unclear whether the service is still in use. Denton ISD did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
“Oftentimes, these policies are very vague,” Sen said. “They’re like one of those forms that they send home and you sign because it’s dense language and they don’t mention these services in particular. We were able to determine that many of these school districts were not telling people affirmatively that this is the kind of service they’re using.”

Day 1: Little Rock to Hot Springs (55 miles)
Fly into Little Rock, then drive 55 miles southwest on Interstate 30 to the small resort town of Hot Springs (population about 39,000) in central Arkansas. Native Americans first settled here thousands of years ago, drawn to the area by thermal springs believed to have healing properties. Fast-forward to the turn of the 20th century, and several Victorian bathhouses were built to attract visitors eager to get treatments in these waters. This bathing tradition eventually fell out of favor, but the structures remain — clustered together in a central downtown location — and are the nucleus of Hot Springs National Park, which extends out into the Ouachitas. Two of the bathhouses (Buckstaff and Quapaw) still offer treatments (mineral baths, massages), and another one (Fordyce) serves as the park’s visitor center, with interesting exhibits showing what the bathhouses were like during their heyday. Tip a brewski in Superior Bathhouse Brewery, a pub and restaurant serving beer made with the thermal water.
You can’t soak in the outdoor springs like the early inhabitants did, but you can go hiking on the plentiful trails. The easy Hot Springs Mountain Trail is a 1.7-mile path (with paved and unpaved sections) with scenic valley overlooks and an observation deck with an elevator.
Away from the park, roam the serene (and mostly accessible) paths of Garvan Woodland Gardens, a 210-acre lakeside botanical garden in the mountains 8 miles south of downtown. Its Anthony Chapel is a glass eye-catcher set amongst pine trees.
At day’s end, unwind at Arkansas’ oldest bar, The Ohio Club, which Al Capone reportedly frequented during Prohibition, when it had a front as a cigar shop. (The city’s secluded location made it a perfect hideout for mobsters, who could gamble at a casino and horse track.) Dine with locals at the old-school McClard’s Bar-B-Q Restaurant.
Where to stay: Hotel Hale, built as a bathhouse in 1892, was recently converted into a downtown boutique hotel with nightly rates typically north of $200. Its nine art-filled rooms have soaking tubs, just what you’d expect in this city of thermal baths. Book early because there’s only one ADA-compliant room (accessible for people with disabilities).

Day 2: Hot Springs to Fort Smith (154 miles)
Before departing Hot Springs, drop into The Pancake Shop, a downtown favorite for made-from-scratch buckwheat pancakes.

Leave town on U.S. Route 270, skirting Lake Ouachita, until it meets U.S. Route 88, a.k.a the Talimena Scenic Byway. The road weaves through mountains with oaks and maples that turn bright shades of orange, red and yellow in fall. At scenic overlooks, snap photos and listen to the symphony of cicadas and the hum of passing boats on the Ouachita River, popular with fishermen for its bass, bream and white perch.
In about 30 miles, before the Oklahoma state line, take U.S. Highway 71 north to Fort Smith, a former frontier town on the Arkansas River in the valley separating the Ouachitas from the Ozarks. The namesake fort was established in 1817 as a buffer between the Cherokee and Osage tribes. Confederate troops occupied it during the Civil War, and it later served as a federal courthouse. Today, the Fort Smith National Historic Site includes a reconstruction of the gallows used by the federal court, the 1838 Commissary building and the foundation of the first Fort Smith.
At the Chaffee Barbershop Museum, flash back to a 1958 event seen around the world: Here, Elvis Presley famously got his buzz cut for his Army duty. You can see actual video of television news coverage from that day in the museum.
There’s plenty more to see around Fort Smith, including more than 30 eye-catching murals by celebrated international public artists such as D*Face and Okuda San Miguel. Pick up a map of the artwork at the downtown visitor center (formerly a bordello in the town’s rowdier days).
The Belle Grove Historic District, just north of downtown, features more than 20 Victorian-style homes, most from the late 1800s. You can tour a handful, including the Italianate-style Clayton House, with ornate coal-burning fireplaces and period furnishings.
Come dinnertime, dig into award-winning barbecue and Delta-style tamales at Neumeier’s Rib Room & Beer Garden, a few blocks from the fort.
Where to stay: The moderately priced 138-room Courtyard by Marriott Fort Smith Downtown is convenient to local landmarks and attractions. Its accessible rooms have roll-in showers and lights that alert the hearing-impaired to knocks at the door.

Day 3: Fort Smith to Bentonville (83 miles)
Head north on Interstate 49 into the Ozarks. Fifty-eight miles from Fort Smith, stop in Fayetteville and shift your attention to two former residents who moved on to a much bigger stage: As law professors at the University of Arkansas in the 1970s, a young Bill and Hillary Clinton lived in this college town before becoming political heavyweights. The modest one-bedroom home where they were married is now the Clinton House Museum, with an array of campaign memorabilia and even a replica of Hillary’s wedding dress.
If you’re up for a little physical activity, go cycling on the Razorback Regional Greenway, a 36-mile bike and pedestrian trail through northwest Arkansas that starts in Fayetteville and takes you over bridges and past parks, playgrounds and more.
Next stop: Bentonville, 27 miles farther north on I-49. Walmart is headquartered here, and the company’s influence is found in museums and venues built by founder Sam Walton and his family. At the Walmart Museum, set in the family’s former downtown 5&10, exhibits trace the company’s evolution, including one explaining how its trademark slogan — Every Day Low Prices — came about.
In 2011, Walton’s daughter, Alice, founded the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, a lauded attraction north of downtown with an impressive collection showcasing five centuries of American art, from early-American to contemporary. Visitors with impairments can enjoy the museum via audio tours, guided tours with sign language interpretation and specialized glasses for colorblindness. Serene trails dotted with sculptures connect the museum to downtown. You might want to also visit Momentary, an affiliated contemporary art space Alice subsequently opened in the arts district southeast of downtown.
Restaurants nominated for James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards make good dinner options. Yeyo’s El Ama de Mexico, in the arts district, serves traditional Mexican street food; try memelas, a Oaxacan tortilla dish stuffed with black beans and cheese. For seafood and steaks, opt for The Preacher’s Son, set in a former church a block from the city square.
Where to stay: The modern and moderately priced 21c Museum Hotel Bentonville impresses with its curated art gallery and the original artwork in its 104 rooms. Accessible rooms feature roll-in showers.

Day 4: Bentonville to Eureka Springs (39 miles)
The forested, hilly drive northeast on Arkansas Highway 72 and U.S. Highway 62 shows off northwest Arkansas at its finest, especially as the colors change in fall. Fifteen miles out of Bentonville, stop at the 4,300-acre Pea Ridge National Military Park, one of the most intact (well-preserved and authentic) Civil War battlefields. Here, an instrumental Union victory in 1862 turned the tide of the conflict.
Twenty-five more miles on U.S. 62 brings you to Eureka Springs (a small town of about 2,200) near the Missouri border, an artsy, somewhat quirky mountain community also blessed with natural springs, though its spas aren’t as flashy as the Hot Springs bathhouses. The shops, galleries and restaurants in its eclectic downtown are housed in preserved buildings with a mix of architectural styles, from Romanesque to Victorian. Duck into Magpie for reasonably priced women’s clothing, gifts and home décor. For weird and wacky art for every budget, head to Zarks Gallery.
In a forest on the city’s outskirts, don’t miss Thorncrown Chapel, a light-filled architectural gem designed by noted Arkansas architect E. Fay Jones. South of downtown at the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, hop on a tram tour to see big cats (cougars, lions and tigers), which this animal sanctuary rescued from abuse and neglect.

An otherwise slower summer tourism season in Volusia County got a slight bump in August with bed tax collections countywide up 3.46% from August 2021.
West Volusia led the way with a 10.87% jump followed by the Halifax area at 4.48%, but Southeast Volusia was down 3.46%.
Hotels were reporting a strong NASCAR race weekend in August as rain delays at Daytona International Speedway added to their business.
It was a welcome change after the summer was down from the post-Covid 19 pandemic boom in 2021. The Daytona Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau reported the Halifax area, which accounts for about 70% of the bed tax collections in Volusia, saw hotel occupancy declined 3.7% to 77.2%, compared to 80.1% in July 2021, despite cheaper rooms. The average daily room rate declined 4.4% to $166.70 compared to $174.45 in July 2021 in the Halifax area.
The little boost in August also was welcome because storm damage probably will deter fall tourism. While the hotels that could reopen were full for Biketoberfest and with storm refugees, after that who knows what will happen.

There were two big community acquisitions recently, including Three Pillar Communities of Los Altos, Calif., buying Terra Mar Village manufactured home community, or parts thereof, between U.S. 1 and the Indian River in Edgewater for $14.5 million. The price would have been higher, but many of the residents in the riverfront community own their lots as well as their manufactured homes. The park owner collects rent on some lots, but just a maintenance and amenity fee from the others. The purchase hadn’t been announced yet, so no other details were available.
On the other hand, a senior community in Holly Hill has already seen a name change to Woodmark at Daytona Beach. Apparently it didn’t matter to the folks at Pacifica Senior Living of San Diego that Bishops Glen was in Holly Hill when they bought it for $13.975 million.
Some other big commercial real estate transactions included a Nashville investor buying the ABC Supply property at 406 Oak Place in Port Orange for $6.775 million. Surfside, Fla., investors bought the commercial building housing an Edward Jones office and medical marijuana dispensary at 1303 Beville Road in Daytona Beach for $2.39 million. Pinehurst, Texas-based Baytown Self Storage bought the convenience store property at 495 N. Volusia Ave. in Orange City for $2 million.
Some smaller deals included Miami investors buying the small multi-family property at 202-204 Mullaly St. in Daytona Beach for $900,000. Allied Search Partners, a medical staffing firm, bought a commercial condo at 4240 Ridgewood Ave. in Port Orange for $525,000.

It’s looking like Farmton North could begin later in 2022 or early 2023 as Miami Corp. is getting permitting finalized. The 5,000-acre residential/commercial development will extend the City of Edgewater to west of Interstate 95.
One other small development is Boston Coffeehouse is looking at a vacant site at 855 S. Woodland Blvd. in DeLand.

Ronaldo made to train alone
Cristiano Ronaldo will be separated from the Manchester United first-team as Erik ten Hag deals with his refusal to come on as a substitute during his side’s win over Tottenham Hotspur.
The Athletic revealed that the Portugal international left the ground early, before the final whistle, earlier on Thursday. It has now emerged that he refused to come on as a substitute and it is now expected that he will be made to train alone.

Fred: Spurs win a high point
Manchester United midfielder Fred has suggested the club’s impressive 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur was the highpoint of their season so far.
Fred scored the opening goal of the game after Ben Davies deflected his effort beyond Hugo Lloris, with Bruno Fernandes making sure of the three points late on.
“It was a big game and very important for me, a collective game which was very important for our team,” he said.
“When I missed the ball we recovered it quickly so it worked well.
“We did a good pressing and we built a result with all the hard work that we’ve done. It’s a collective result and a very important one.
“A very good performance. Our team worked hard for this during the season.
“We are adapting with the new coach, the pre-season and now starting the season, game after game. So we talk in the changing room, we help each other.
“(Against Spurs) we started very concentrated since the first minute until the end, and we got a big game and result.”

Brentford Women to make history by playing at the Gtech Community for first time
Brentford Women will make history by playing at the Gtech Community Stadium for the first time on Sunday, November 13.
They will face Watford Ladies Development in a London South East Regional Women’s Football League Division One North match and kick-off will be at 3pm.
All of the tickets for the game are free and supporters can claim up to six each as the club hope to break their record attendance of 1,010 which they set in March during a 7-2 victory over Sport London e Benfica at Bedfont Sports club.
Jon Varney, Brentford’s chief executive, says they want to put “more focus” on the women’s teams.
“Playing at the Gtech Community Stadium will be an amazing experience for the team and a great way to show how important they are to the Club,” Varney said. “We want our women’s teams to continue to grow and progress and I believe an opportunity like this is a great way to help them do that.”
Brentford women’s first-team manager Karleigh Osborne added that it will be “a massive occasion.”
“It’s great that the Club are fully behind us and are pushing our team to be playing at the highest possible level,” he said. “We’ve had some great experiences playing for Brentford already, including playing at Griffin Park and having more than 1,000 supporters down at Bedfont Sports Club last season but this game takes us to another level and will help us to retain our players and give them the support they need for future success.”

The Football Association has charged West Ham for failing to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during their 1-1 draw with Southampton.

West Ham United have reported a “number of racist and abusive messages” directed at Hawa Cissoko to the police following the club’s 2-1 Women’s Super League victory over Aston Villa.
West Ham defender Cissoko, 25, was sent off late on following an altercation with Villa’s Sarah Mayling on Saturday.
Later that day, Cissoko posted a message on Twitter saying: “It’s lucky that not much affects me! Because some nonsense and (very aggressive) insults are flying around! It makes you want to kill yourself!”

Former Manchester United assistant manager Mike Phelan has said that he never felt any pressure from the club to select Cristiano Ronaldo during his time at Old Trafford.
Phelan, 60, returned to Manchester United in 2019 to work as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant. Both men were at the club when Ronaldo was signed from Juventus in August 2021.

Following Facebook’s rebrand to Meta Platforms in October last year, sparking the global virtual space race, Morgan Stanley soon announced that trading in the Metaverse would be the “next big investment theme.”
15 years ago, software-as-a-service (SaaS) and the cloud triggered similar shifts in the market. This caused the value of many companies to skyrocket while rapidly increasing competition among verticals.
Currently, businesses are considering the meteoric rise of many new intelligent industries. Companies are also mulling whether the Metaverse is a viable, sustainable platform for commerce and economic growth.
With a forcasted $1 trillion revenue opportunity in less than a decade, businesses must start preparing for a metaverse-dominated future.
The Metaverse is defined as a platform, combining spatial computing and the Internet, that simulates physical worlds using immersive technologies. These experiences aim to drive rich, interactive experiences for users, both simultaneously and individually.
Numerous companies such as Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Decentraland, Epic Games, Unity, Pico Interactive, NVIDIA, and even Autodesk are developing platforms to facilitate the Metaverse.
Their new tools are set to offer enterprises an immense number of business use cases. Many firms have already turned to extended reality (XR) for training, upskilling, evaluating, collaborating, and showcasing their content on immersive platforms.
Massive firms such as NIKE, Mcdonald’s, Wendys, Adidas, Gucci, Acura, and many others have also entered the digital frontier to interface with colleagues and customers. Entertainment firms worldwide have also turned to immersive tech for amusement rides, concerts, and interactive gaming.
The blockchain is one of the foundational technologies powering the decentralised Metaverse, where no single entity will build it, own, or support it.
This requires an underlying architecture based on blockchain used on platforms like Decentraland, Insomnia Labs, and Sandbox. Real estate in these platforms are tradeable, blockchain-based assets.
Users can trade using cryptocurrency and property sold as NFTs, ensuring that assets remain non-interchangeable and retain their value, leading to three primary use cases for business operations:
Provide services: The Metaverse will have its own product and services for businesses, namely collaboration platforms. For example, users can purchase digital assets to personalise and dress their 3D avatars for VR platforms. Theme parks and museums can also leverage digital humans as tour guides.
Sell meta-assets as NFTs: NFTs allow buyers to buy and sell digital content linked to the blockchain. An increasingly popular digital asset class, people have sold them as tweets, memes, GIFs, and artwork.
Advertise Phygital Goods: VR ads and marketing can also drive business growth with solutions such as digital billboards in virtual collaboration spaces to product placements in VR games. Additionally, companies such as Nike have begun producing phygital products at its concept store in Seoul, South Korea, which converts trainers from digital NFTs to physical products and conversely.
Despite a promising future, metaverse business and trade will face significant challenges, making it a difficult task for regulatory bodies. Issues linked to erratic cryptocurrency values may call for special measures to protect investors currently and in the near future.
Risks to large brands and market leaders may also arise due to antitrust laws and unauthorised adverts in the Metaverse.
Some speculate that moves from large corporations could make it difficult for smaller and emerging brands to carve out room. Allegations over product licencing and technology disputes have already hit Meta Platforms and ByteDance in recent years.
Ultimately, the Metaverse is expected to become the next iteration of the free market. It will have similar risks and opportunities, leading to regulatory intervention to ensure sound trading practices.
Organisations that set standards for the industry, including the Metaverse Standards Forum, IEEE, XR Association, and Khronos Group, and O3DF, among others, continue to rally the global tech industry to build interoperability, security, safety, ethics, and privacy benchmarks for future users.

Nine years later, Amazon Fashion launched in 2018, accounting for $30 billion of the fashion industry’s $390 billion in the US market, surpassing Target and Walmart for the leading spot in online fashion.

It’s a genius strategy to be a one-stop marketplace for all our favorite brands and styles. Instead of numerous pages on Google Chrome to do your shopping, Amazon holds almost every brand you can think of, from Nike to Calvin Klein, and reportedly plans on expanding to feature 12 luxury labels, possibly from the LVMH mega-corp.
Currently, under their Luxury Stores vertical launched in 2020, Amazon is offering “pre-loved” items, including Louis Vuitton, Dior, and Chanel from the third-party resell brand What Goes Around Comes Around, as well as in season Sergio Hudson and Theophilio.

Although you can shop for established brands, it’s the emerging ones that are currently getting a lot of traction. Most of the clothes we see on influencers are trendy pieces that have better quality than Shein, Pretty Little Thing, or Fashion Nova, cheaper dupes of the pricey real thing, and athleisure/loungewear gear. A few pieces getting a lot of attention are the “BBL Jacket”’ $16 compared to Lulumelon’s $118, the parachute pants $18 compared to Jaded London’s $93, and of course, the slim maxi dress, $11 compared to Skim’s $78. Thanks to the Amazon Storefront feature, it’s made it easier to bridge the gap from influencer to consumer to purchase the exact garment shown in TikTok without having to search through pages of products. Each item is shipped from nameless brands, similar to the Aliexpress model, yet, have issued a takeover to our wardrobe. So far, and shockingly, Amazon Fashion holds the number one spot as the most purchased category.
Earlier this year, the mega-conglomerate opened its first brick-and-mortar at The Americana at Brand Ball in Los Angeles, California, and recently Columbus, Ohio. Amazon Style follows its three grocery stores, Amazon Go, Amazon Fresh, and Whole Foods, as its fourth physical market. The retail does offer brands like Levi’s and Steve Madden, and it’s a traditional tech-savvy shopping experience with customers using QR codes as a virtual cart while employees gather apparel to try on on check out and can pay with a physical card or online account.
Also if you factor in Amazon’s investment in fostering the next global design talent through its reality competition series, Making The Cut, and the Making The Cut store, Amazon is determined to hold space in the fashion online marketplace sector. With an influx of brands and physical locations joining the market’s strategy, it’s safe to say they’ll play a big part in the way we see fashion in the future.

Only ⅓ of women in tech, media and telecom industries with hybrid work schedules report satisfaction with their work-life balance, says a new Deloitte report. Unsurprisingly, 86% of the women with children report that they bear the majority of the child care responsibilities, which can be complicated by varied work schedules that require similarly changing child care needs.

While the Visitax fee is only $12, it applies to every passenger over age 4 entering the state and can easily add up for families or large groups traveling together.

Every international traveler needs to be prepared to pay extra fees when withdrawing local currency from ATMs. Visitors to Cancun should have cash on hand for shopping, dining, and tipping – withdrawing from ATMs will give you the best exchange rate. ATMs that are attached to or associated with reputable banks will be more reliable and have lower fees than privately owned ATMs found on the street or inside businesses.
ATM fees will likely start at $1.50, and your own bank might also charge a foreign transaction fee. Travelers should always contact their home bank prior to their vacation to let them know where you will be traveling (so that they don’t disable your cards) and to determine any foreign fees that may be charged at ATMs.
Hotel Resort Fees Can Be Hard To Find
A hidden cost that is becoming more popular in Cancun is the resort fee. Resort fees can be sneaky and often won’t show up when looking at hotel pricing. It is always wise to check the fine print or contact your hotel to determine if you will be charged a resort fee. The Fairmont Mayakoba charges a $27 resort fee per adult, and according to Expedia, the Grand Hotel Cancun has a resort fee of $50 per night.

It is customary for tourists in Cancun to leave cash tips for service workers – including bartenders, hotel housekeeping, luggage handlers, and wait staff. Tipping well is a good practice, given that wages in Mexico within the service industry are often quite modest. On average, tourists in Cancun should tip $1 per drink from a bar, 10-20% for good service at a restaurant, and $1-$5 per night for housekeeping attendants in your hotel. Working in the service industry isn’t easy, and tourists should always budget extra travel money to reward good service while on vacation.

Outcomes of the Children’s Healthy Living (CHL) intervention around overweight and obesity in young children were maintained at the 6-year mark — and included a lower prevalence of acanthosis nigricans.
The findings, which focused on children ages 2-8 years in the US-affiliate Pacific region, appear in JAMA Network Open.
Most of the program’s interventions were broad, community-oriented measures, such as training, policies, systems, and environments. Six more targeted children’s behaviors: consumption of fruits and vegetables, water, and sugar-sweetened beverages; sleep; physical activity; and screen time.
Among the 9,840 children included in the analysis (4,866 girls [49.5%] and 4,974 boys [50.5%], 6,334 [64.4%] aged 2-5 years), the intervention group showed significant improvements compared with the control group in prevalence of overweight plus obesity (d = -12.60% [95% CI -20.92% to -4.28%]), waist circumference (d = -1.64 [95% CI -2.87 to -0.41] cm), and acanthosis nigricans prevalence (d = -3.55% [95% CI -6.17% to -0.92%]).
First study author, Rachel Novotny, PhD, RDN, is professor and graduate chair with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and director of the CHL Children’s Healthy Living Center of Excellence and Resilience in Food Systems. Her exchange with the Reading Room has been edited for length and clarity.
What was the initial motivation for creating CHL?
Novotny: Interventions to change behavior alone have not been sufficient to reduce the prevalence of obesity or type 2 diabetes. Rather, broad changes in the obesogenic environment are needed to determine, for example, whether obesity is associated with occurrence of acanthosis nigricans, an indicator of insulin resistance.
The CHL trial was a multilevel, multicomponent, community-randomized intervention trial designed to change the environment so that children in the US-affiliated Pacific (USAP) region can eat healthier food and be more physically active, in order to decrease prevalence of overweight, obesity, and acanthosis nigricans. The CHL trial used a social ecological framework of health and wellness designed to act on multiple levels and in multiple components within behavioral, physical, social, cultural, economic, and policy environments to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity among children in multiple communities, ultimately reducing it by 3.9% in 4 years.
What was the impetus for this particular investigation?
Novotny: At the same time, few obesity prevention studies have included long-term follow-up, described intervention maintenance, and/or reported follow-up analyses after completion of the study intervention program.
We hypothesized that the CHL trial would maintain a reduction in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among young children in the USAP region.
How would you summarize the finding’s key result?
Novotny: The trial was effective in decreasing prevalence of overweight and obesity and acanthosis nigricans, including further decrease 6 years after the funded intervention activities stopped.
What are the implications for people with acanthosis nigricans?
Novotny: Acanthosis nigricans among young children is a good way to measure and monitor the metabolic impact of a community-based intervention in a noninvasive way.
More attention is needed to the potential of acanthosis nigricans for surveillance systems and as a recognizable marker that action is needed.
Although endocrinologists already believe its presence is enough for action, we believe more research on acanthosis nigricans will further our understanding of nuanced metabolic changes. More tools to illustrate the presentation of acanthosis nigricans in diverse populations would be helpful for diagnosis and further research and action.
IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE:
Individual and community-based interventions improved obesity and rates of acanthosis nigricans in young children in US-affiliated Pacific regions.
Effects were maintained 6 years after the end of the 2-year intervention.
Acanthosis nigricans could be used as marker of insulin resistance.

There are dozens of different kitchen tools, but they all fall broadly into two categories: multitaskers (devices that can perform multiple tasks, like Dutch ovens and stand mixers) and unitaskers (one-use gadgets that can only accomplish what they’re designed for). While celebrity chefs like Alton Brown have famously spoken out about unitaskers (via NPR), we do recognize that there are some unitaskers that are absolutely worth it. A citrus juicer may only be able to juice lemons and limes, but it makes quick work of it while keeping your hands clean. And a salad spinner may take up a lot of room in your kitchen, but using one is truly the best way to remove excess water from a head of lettuce.
On the other hand, there’s a slew of kitchen tools you shouldn’t waste your money on. These tools provide solutions for problems that aren’t that time-consuming or perform tasks that can easily be accomplished by another tool.
Garlic press

While many swear by the garlic press as a time-saving mechanism, we know plenty of ways to mince garlic without one of these gadgets. This hand-held tool has two hinged handles that work together to put pressure on the clove placed in the middle. When pressed through the grid, the clove transforms into a pile of minced garlic, or that’s the idea anyway. What actually happens is the garlic turns to mush, mincing the clove far finer than is possible with a knife. This leads to one of the biggest mistakes you can make when cooking with garlic: The resulting garlic mush can burn easily and will unintentionally infuse whatever you’re cooking with extra-garlicky flavor.
The late Anthony Bordain expressed his hatred for the garlic press in his 2000 book Kitchen Confidential. In the chapter about how to cook like the pros, Bordain rants about how garlic is “divine” when treated properly, but “disgusting” when it’s not treated with respect. When talking about the garlic press, he specifically refers to it as an abomination, “I don’t know what that junk is that squeezes out the end of those things, but it ain’t garlic.”
Bourdain suggests smashing garlic with the flat end of the knife blade or slivering it instead of mincing it. If it must be finely minced, try using a fork instead of cluttering up your kitchen drawers with another single-use kitchen tool.

Don’t get us wrong — we like store-bought ice cream, but do recognize there’s real culinary power in knowing how to turn a simple custard recipe into an untold number of ice cream flavors. It allows you to take advantage of the berries at the farmers market or have a little fun with boozy concoctions for your next dinner party (we’re looking at you, Ina Garten’s Grand Marnier-infused peach ice cream).
Our love for homemade ice cream doesn’t deter from the fact that ice cream makers can only do one thing, and they take up a ton of space in storage. Not only that, but they require advanced planning to use. Depending on the model, you either need to buy a 10-pound bag of ice every time you want to churn, or you have to put the bowl in the freezer 24 hours prior to use (via KitchenAid).
Luckily, there’s a way to make homemade ice cream without any special appliances. Our favorite no-churn ice cream recipe uses sweetened condensed milk and whipped heavy cream. It only takes five minutes to mix the ingredients and a 12-hour rest in the freezer to make this no-equipment-necessary ice cream, saving you time and storage space.
Herb scissors
Kitchen shears are one of our favorite kitchen tools, and they’re so valuable that Alton Brown once tweeted that “a good pair of kitchen shears is worth 7.3 knives.” You can use them to do everything from spatchcocking a chicken for a quick weeknight dinner to cutting herbs without breaking out the cutting board.
Single-use scissors like herb scissors, on the other hand, simply don’t make the cut. These specialty scissors cram five blades between the two handles to “equal 10 knife chops,” (via Amazon). That sounds great, however, reviewers point out a few problems. One reviewer commented that the scissors won’t cut moist materials, and the herbs fold up between the blades and don’t get cut. Several commented that the blades weren’t sharp enough to cut through herbs and that they rusted after several uses. Since the blades don’t come apart like a good pair of shears, the water gets trapped in the scissors and rusts the blades.
Put it all together, and we can see why a specific pair of scissors might be a waste of money. Better to trust in a sharp knife or a sturdy pair of shears that can be sharpened when they dull over time.
Avocado slicer

Cooking can be hazardous, and between sharp knife blades and open flames, it’s easy to get hurt. Avocados can be slippery and hard to cut, and they become extremely mushy when overripe. OSF HealthCare reports that nearly 9,000 people go to the hospital each year with “avocado hand” — the unfortunate aftermath of using a knife to pierce an avocado pit, but missing and plunging the blade into your hand instead. So it’s no wonder that companies have created a kitchen tool to help people avoid knife-related injuries.
While there are several different versions of the avocado slicer, they all have one thing in common: They’re specifically designed to cut, pit, and slice avocados. They really only work on avocados because their “blades” are made of plastic, which are sharp enough to go through an avocado peel, but not many other fruits or vegetables. While reviews indicate that they do actually work for removing an avocado pit without cutting into your hand, there are other avocado pit removal hacks that don’t require cluttering up the gadget drawer.
If you’re not comfortable using a knife, try scooping the pit out with a spoon. Small spoons with pointy tips work the best, but large soup spoons will work in a pinch. You can also remove an avocado pit using just your hands by placing your index and middle fingers around the pit and pushing the pit firmly from the back with your thumb.

Eggs are one of our favorite ingredients because of their versatility. Scramble, poach, or hard-boil them for breakfast, add them to meatballs and meatloaf as a binding ingredient, or use them to leaven and give rise to baked goods. When baking with eggs, it’s always a good idea to separate the egg whites from the yolks, whipping them into an airy concoction that adds a light, fluffy texture to the finished dessert.
It can be tricky to separate the egg whites from the yolks, though. Using two eggshells makes it easy to accidentally pierce the yolk with the shell’s sharp edges, causing the yellow substance to bleed into the whites. That doesn’t mean you need to spend money on a gadget specifically designed to separate the two, though.
The best egg-separating method starts with using cold eggs, which helps the yolks hold their shape and create a clean separation. From there, you have a few choices. If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, crack the egg into a bowl before pouring the contents over your hand, allowing the white to run through your fingers into a separate bowl. You can also use a clean plastic water bottle as a clever trick for separating egg yolks. Simply squeeze the bottle and place it over the yolk, creating a vacuum that sucks the yolk right up.
Shredder claws / meat paws

Shredder claws (also called meat paws) are exactly what they sound like: Handheld “claws” made of stainless steel or plastic that are designed to go over your hands when shredding meat. Now we’re not saying you should throw them away if you happen to buy a BBQ tool set that comes with shredding claws. There’s certainly something kind of cool about pretending to be a bear while you’re tearing into a perfectly cooked pork shoulder, transforming the large roast into a pile of pulled pork. That said, we can’t think of a single reason why you should go out of your way to purchase a set of these claws.
It’s just as easy to shred beef, pork, or chicken using a pair of standard forks. Simply place the forks into the meat and pull in opposite directions to remove long, shredded pieces of meat, repeating the process until the entire roast is shredded. You can also use a potato masher, pressing down on the meat and using a pair of tongs to pull out the exposed strands. If the meat is cool enough and cooked properly, you won’t need any tools at all and you can pull the meat apart with your fingers. All of these methods involve a little elbow grease and getting your hands dirty, but the shredder claws won’t get the job done any more cleanly or easily.

Bread machines have certainly had their time and place in history. According to Taste, the all-in-one bread machine debuted in Japan in 1986. It promised an easier way to make bread: Pour the ingredients into the machine, push a button, and walk away as the gadget mixes, proofs, and bakes a perfect loaf of bread. By 1999, there was a bread machine in one in five American households.
While a dedicated bread machine may have high appeal for someone who bakes bread every day, it’s probably a waste of money for the casual bread enthusiast. These machines do provide bread-making convenience, but they’re large and take up valuable counter space. You can’t use the machine to make different bread shapes, either, like round rustic boules or baguettes, as they’re only designed to make loaf-shaped bread (via Salad in a Jar).

Regulators in four states simultaneously filed emergency cease-and-desist orders Thursday against virtual casino Slotie.
States law enforcement officials allege Slotie’s owners were soliciting investors online to participate in an illegal gambling operation in the metaverse, a digital world where participants can interact with each other, purchase products and gamble. State securities boards in Texas, Kentucky, New Jersey and Alabama accused Slotie of defrauding investors and ordered it to immediately halt the sale of its non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, to retail investors.
NFTs are blockchain-based digital assets that designate ownership of virtual art, music, or in this case, proprietorship of a metaverse casino to the holder of the NFT. According to the order, 10,0000 Slotie NFTs were sold to the public.
Slotie, which is based in the country of Georgia, began operating in October 2021, according to the order. On its website, it said its NFTs “are your ticket into the largest and fastest-growing online casino network on the blockchain.”
Although the metaverse project was selling securitized NFTs, the order said it failed to provide purchasers with essential information such as the business address of the company or its founders, with a telephone number or an email address.
The order further alleges the respondent failed to disclose its assets, liabilities, revenue and other financial information related to its operations of the metaverse casinos.
Joe Rotunda, the Texas state securities board director, said while the metaverse does provide legitimate business opportunities, it also can provide a new forum for fraudsters looking to scam the public.
“The latest metaverse investment products — NFTs that purport to provide passive income — often bear significant undisclosed risks,” he said in a statement. “These risks are often significant, and investing in virtual realities can leave investors virtually broke.”
As a result of the order, Slotie must immediately cease and desist from selling to investors until the security is properly registered. If the founders violate the order, they are subject to a fine of up to $10,000. They also have 31 days to request a hearing on the issue.

Several Houston-area teams were included in the recently released Texas Association of Basketball Coaches preseason rankings.
The group includes all three teams that advanced to the UIL state tournament last season – the Summer Creek girls, Atascocita boys and Hitchcock boys.
Summer Creek advanced to the Class 6A state semifinals before falling to South Grand Prairie. The Bulldogs finished with 38-3 record. This year’s team came in at No. 5 in the preseason rankings and is the highest-rated squad from Houston across all UIL classifications.
Atascocita reached the 6A semifinals on the boys side before coming up short against eventual champion Duncanville. The Eagles finished with a 34-7 record. This year’s team came in at No. 12 in the preseason rankings.
Hitchcock made its first state tournament appearance since 2004, falling in the 2A semifinals against San Antonio Cole. The Bulldogs had a 31-6 record. This year’s team came in at No. 2 in the preseason rankings, trailing only Dallas Madison.
Fort Bend Marshall also starts the season with a No. 2 ranking on the boys side, coming in behind Dallas Kimball in the 5A list. The Shadow Creek and Washington boys also debuted with high rankings, both coming in at No. 5 in the 6A and 4A list, respectively.
The Houston area dominated the girls private school rankings. Houston Christian (TAPPS 6A/SPC 4A), Second Baptist (TAPPS 5A/SPC 3A) and Lutheran North (TAPPS 3A) all earned No. 1 rankings.
It was more of the same on the boys side with Second Baptist (TAPPS 5A/SPC 3A), Westbury Christian (TAPPS 3A) and Grace Christian (TAPPS 2A) taking the top spots.

Garter snake causes stir aboard United Airlines jet in New Jersey
The unexpected appearance of a live snake on a plane caused some turbulence among business-class passengers aboard a United Airlines jet at the end of a flight from Florida to New Jersey. The reptile stowaway, identified as a harmless garter snake, turned up on United Airlines Flight 2038 from Tampa shortly after landing Monday afternoon at Newark Liberty International Airport, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

THE HOUSTON ASTROS…
The Astros put their star power and their depth on display in Game 1 of the ALCS, beating the Yankees 4-2. Justin Verlander, the likely AL Cy Young winner, shook off a second-inning Harrison Bader home run to go six innings, allowing just the one run and striking out 11. His 215 career postseason strikeouts are most in MLB history.
Martin Maldonado doubled home Chas McCormick to tie things at one in the second, and Yuli Gurriel‘s sixth-inning solo shot gave Houston the lead. Two batters later, McCormick doubled the lead with his own solo home run.
Jeremy Peña homered in the seventh to give the Astros plenty of breathing room, which proved valuable when Anthony Rizzo hit a solo bomb in the eighth.
The Yankees struck out 17 times compared to the Astros’ two. It’s the largest difference ever in a postseason game.
Game 2 is tonight, with Luis Severino and Framber Valdez starting.
… AND ALSO A GOOD MORNING TO THE SAN DIEGO PADRES
The Padres got up off the mat, dusted themselves off and played their best when the occasion called for it. After getting shut out in Game 1 and going down 4-0 early in Game 2 Wednesday, San Diego blasted its way past Philadelphia, 8-5, to knot the NLCS at one game apiece.
Brandon Drury and Josh Bell started the comeback with home runs on back-to-back pitches in the second inning.
The Padres then scored five runs in the fifth inning, tying their record for a postseason inning. Austin Nola (facing his brother, Aaron), Juan Soto, Drury and Bell all registered RBI hits.
Manny Machado crushed a solo home run in the seventh inning.
Blake Snell soldiered through five innings before San Diego’s bullpen finished things off. The Padres’ bullpen has a 2.05 ERA this postseason.
After using the long ball to close the gap, the Padres used small ball — and their deep lineup — to take control, writes MLB expert Mike Axisa.
Axisa: “Four of the first five hitters (Aaron) Nola faced in that fifth inning had hits, including (Austin) Nola and Soto in two-strike counts. That’s why you gut the farm system to get the 23-year-old generational hitter, so he can help you slay the Dodgers dragon and also come up with clutch game-tying hits in the NLCS. … The Padres went 6 for 9 with a walk and a hit-by-pitch in that five-run fifth inning, and three Phillies pitchers combined the throw 46 pitches.”

With the Phillies leading 4-0 through 1 1/2 innings and stud starter Aaron Nola on the mound, it would have been hard to blame Philadelphia faithful for looking ahead to a 2-0 NLDS lead and maybe — just maybe — thinking about a World Series trip upcoming.
Shortly thereafter, any such thoughts went up in smoke as quickly as the Phillies’ lead.
Aaron Nola, who had not allowed an earned run in three straight starts going back to the regular season, gave up six in just 4 2/3 innings.
After five hits and four runs in the second inning alone, the Phillies managed just three hits and one run the rest of the way.
The Phillies entered Wednesday 27-2 all-time when leading a postseason game by at least four runs.
In the second inning, Philadelphia had a nearly 85 percent chance to win according to Baseball Savant. Instead of heading into the off day today with a 2-0 lead, the Phillies will have to settle for a split and avoid thinking too much about what could have been.
Not so honorable mentions
Russell Wilson is getting criticism from all angles.
The Commanders have more embarrassing off-field issues, this time with a 50/50 raffle.
Cristiano Ronaldo was an unused substitute and left the field early in Manchester United‘s 2-0 win over Tottenham.

It’s not a national holiday, but it should be. Today is a Sports Equinox, also known as the day where all four major North American sports leagues — the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL — are in action. It’s just the 27th Sports Equinox ever, though it’s the first of four this year: It’ll happen again Oct. 23, 24 and 31.
Here’s what’s on tap:

Thursday Night Football Preview: Saints, Cardinals have big questions to answer

If you don’t know what to make of either the Saints or the Cardinals, don’t worry: You’re not alone. Maybe we’ll find out more tonight when they meet in Arizona, but given the craziness of this NFL season, who knows?
Let’s start with the Saints (2-4), who haven’t named a starting quarterback yet. Jameis Winston hasn’t played since Week 3 but doesn’t carry an injury designation this week while Andy Dalton has performed solidly in Winston’s stead. Outside of quarterback, the Saints’ injury list is a lengthy one.
No matter who’s behind center, New Orleans’ defense needs to turn things around, writes NFL expert Jared Dubin.
Dubin: “The New Orleans defense has not been as underwhelming as has the Arizona offense, but it’s certainly not lived up to lofty expectations. … Losing Marcus Williams on the back end didn’t help, but this is also just an older unit now. Guys like Cameron Jordan, Demario Davis, Tyrann Mathieu and more are still quality starters, but not quite as good as they were in recent seasons. (And Mathieu has been flat-out not good at times this year.) That little bit of slip-up matters when the margin for error is as small as it is for the Saints at the moment.”
As for the Cardinals (2-4), the biggest storyline is who’s back: DeAndre Hopkins returns after a six-game suspension, and that should really help Kyler Murray. In his career, Murray’s passer rating is more 13 points higher and his yards per attempt is more than a yard higher when Hopkins is on the field compared to when he isn’t. We’ll see how much and how well Hopkins plays in his first game in nearly 10 months, but his impact is certainly something to consider when placing your bets tonight, writes gambling guru Tyler Sullivan.
Takeaways as more NBA teams get season underway

Twenty-four NBA teams tipped off their season Wednesday night, and few did it as impressively as the New Orleans Pelicans. Zion Williamson and company went into Brooklyn and blew out the Nets, 130-108. Williamson scored 25 in his first game since the 2020-21 season, and Brandon Ingram had a team-high 28.
The Pelicans, just months removed from a playoff trip, rightfully have their eyes set on more thanks to Zion, writes NBA expert Brad Botkin.
Botkin: “Zion Williamson hit the ground running in his first game in over 18 months… Williamson is clearly in great shape, and he continues to have incredible feel for setting up defenders to get to his left hand, whether it be with his back to the basket or starting his downhill momentum a beat before the catch… The Pelicans look great.”

1. Citizens, not consumers
The metaverse will be comprised of citizens entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Citizens are entitled to contribute to the making of the rules and regulations that govern the community.
Citizens are entitled to protection from a governing body and are granted the rights and privileges of free people.
Calling on the citizen and not the consumer is nothing new. Jonah Sachs has been championing this movement with “empowerment marketing.” This way of thinking is a radical departure from the traditional advertising model. No longer can we treat users like mindless sheep, building experiences based upon company-centric calls to action (or any CTA, for that matter!).
Empowering your audience to have a say in your work is possible now. No longer can we be mindless sheep, unaware of the digital currency we are giving away to companies who don’t align with our values. Every click, pageview and digital move we make contributes to someone’s bottom line, and it’s our job to educate ourselves and be informed citizens in this new economy.

2. Make meaning not money
The metaverse will enable citizens to make meaningful connections with the community and each other.
The metaverse will support a free exchange of ideas and provide citizens with tools to express their views while offering protection against abuse and harm.
The metaverse will enact rules and regulations ensuring all citizens’ protection.
We are all striving for an open and welcoming metaverse, and requires a shift away from the walled gardens that exist today. There is a place for private business within the metaverse, just as there’s a place for your local grocery store or Best Buy.
The metaverse will provide the structure for private businesses to thrive while not limiting access to only those who are shopping. There need to be free and open spaces where anyone can make meaningful connections, express themselves and not be viewed as a commodity.
3. Provide access to all
The metaverse will allow anyone access and not limit participation to the privileged few.
The metaverse will provide citizens the tools to easily build the world around them and the freedom to pursue what makes them happy.
The metaverse will not censor, judge, or impose biases upon citizens but instead, encourage and support all voices and perspectives.
A thoughtful approach is required to ensure a diverse population can access the tools to build the metaverse. Companies investing in this space need to consider how easy or hard it is to create shared spaces.
Just as platforms such as WordPress and Wix have democratized the creation of websites, so will there be platforms that democratize building 3D worlds. Investing in open-source solutions will play a vital role in an accessible and inclusive metaverse.

The Pitch: In an unnamed rural town in the Blue Ridge Mountains, about a decade into our future, live the Fisher siblings — ex-Marine Burton (Jack Reynor) and his tech-savvy sister, Flynne (Chloe Grace Moretz). Together, they work to scrape together enough money to care for their ailing mother through day jobs at 3D printing shops and playing violent VR video games (called “sims”) for cash.
But their lives get a bit more interesting when Burton is tapped one day to secretly beta test a new piece of VR tech, which seems to be just another game. When Flynne tests it for him, she finds herself in a cyborg version of Burton’s body (the titular “peripheral”), running security for a mysterious woman (Charlotte Riley) in a slick but post-apocalyptic London. A few fisticuffs and some exposition later, the Fisher clan find themselves at the center of a battle for control over the future, bringing down new dangers to their real lives in the past.
Ready Player Done: Based on the 2014 novel by cyberpunk pioneer William Gibson, The Peripheral certainly plays on many ideas we associate with the genre. There’s the alchemy of the organic and synthetic, as human beings grow ever more integrated with technology; the ever-encroaching pull of capitalism into every aspect of human existence; the lizard-brain bursts of action with kung fu and bladed weapons.
They’re ideas that feel familiar, but mostly because Gibson popularized those ideas in the first place — and they’ve bled into everything from Blade Runner to The Matrix, all the way to shows like Westworld (whose developers, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, executive produced this series).
The Peripheral occasionally suffers from that sense of familiarity, since the ideas it’s exploring have already been cribbed from Gibson’s more seminal works for the more well-known examples stated above. But taken on its own terms, the show still feels slick, stylish, and thought-provoking, if occasionally hampered by its all-too-heady mix of concepts.
Grey Mirror: Plus, it’s all handsomely presented, Amazon adorning it with a lovely budget that makes room for some incredible feats of production design. Director Vincenzo Natali (Cube) has particular fun with his mysteries in the first two episodes of the series, from Flynne’s extended sojourn to Future London (and a suitably visceral bit of cybernetic eye-surgery) to a nighttime raid on Burton’s old crew from some mercs paid from future folks to take them out in the past.

Meanwhile, Mark Korven’s (The Witch) score glitches with minimalist cool, and Game of Thrones costumer Michele Clapton has a ball with the upper-crust coats, cloaks, and gowns of London in the future.
The bits and bobs of future tech are also consistently fun to ogle: The working-class gadgets of 2032 are suitably chunky and modular, while the elites of 2099 London make eerie use of androids with porcelain-like shells that can project whatever face you like onto them, and futuristic cars drive on streets that point you to your destination like a video game.
Too bad, then, that the nighttime scenes frequently suffer from that flattening color grading that washes everything in a grey fog, so it’s a lot harder to see what’s going on. (Just because you’re working with sterile-looking future tech doesn’t mean everything has to be grey and brown!)
1.0z4rk: A little murkiness is worth it as the episodes progress and you start wrapping your head around the larger conflicts and major players involved in this quantum-fueled war for the future. Flynne begins spending more time in her future peripheral, working (and, thanks to their techno-connection, potentially falling in love) with the missing woman’s brother, Wolf (Gary Carr). He’s a stylish failson who sees what’s coming and hopes to stop it with the help of Flynne, some hackers, and a suitably libertine patron (JJ Feild’s Byronesque Lev).

Burton, meanwhile, struggles to keep Flynne and his old Marine buddies safe (including One Night in Miami…‘s Eli Goree as Conner, a man who lost his legs in battle and now zooms around in a super-badass ATV wheelchair), fending off one threat from the future after another. Most of the time, this dovetails with the intricate politics of his small town, including threats from the wealthy, devious patriarch who practically runs the town (Louis Herthum’s Corbell Pickett, all Southern drawl and beardy Cheshire-Cat smile).
When the show gives characters like Conner and Corbell room to breathe, it’s nice to see — Alexandra Billings also makes quite the impression as a haughty Met Police inspector in the future — but it also means keeping track of a lot of moving pieces, which can get overwhelming as you wrestle with the bigger topics of technology and control that are at play.
The Verdict: The best thing about The Peripheral is that it’s as straightforward an adaptation of Gibson’s ideas as one could muster, especially in a 2022 where his ideas of technocracy and the commodification of tech and flesh feel more like current events than prophecy. The notion of a cold war playing out between timelines, and two average schmucks getting caught in the middle, is an enticing angle, especially buoyed by a robust budget and all the creepy cyberpunk atmosphere you can muster.

But it’s admittedly frustrating to see the iconoclastic, murder-mystery conceit of the novel get flattened into a halting action-adventure series that takes too many cues from the later seasons of Westworld. Here, their target is merely missing, not dead, there’s a cackling villainess in T’Nia Miller’s Cherise (fabulous though she may be), and the mysteries are doled out either too early or far too late.
Still, the core ideas are interesting, long as you can keep them straight in your head, the cast is game, and the action is reasonably exciting. Let’s see whether patches in future seasons can upgrade this show from good to great.

Amid the current crypto winter, I have called and chatted with participants in the digital assets industry and heard the same narratives scores of times:
More investors are interested in crypto than ever before.
Institutional interest in crypto continues to increase.
The tools and products to include digital assets into portfolios continue to proliferate.
Pending regulations will help create the kind of clarity that helps even more people become comfortable investing in crypto.
Yet the price of tokens like bitcoin and ether remain subdued – if there is all this momentum behind digital assets, it’s not showing up in the kind of price increases that signal investor enthusiasm.
Part of the reason for the stubbornly lower prices is an economic one – crypto did not show itself to be a hedge against inflation or equity volatility early in the market downturn, so investors haven’t seen digital assets as a haven while inflation remains high and interest rates climb.
New retail investor money has been slow to move back into the digital asset space because many of those investors are being squeezed by inflation. People who have been active in crypto investing are largely out of dry powder – and Wall Street investors have shifted towards a more risk-off posture.

Adoption becomes contagion
Another reason for lower prices is the contagion of failures in speculative assets.
“It’s both the best time and the worst time in crypto,” said John Sarson, CEO of Sarson Funds, a crypto asset manager and education resource for financial advisors. “Adoption was going gangbusters. Everyone with speculative assets was deploying them in crypto, and then they saw them evaporate over the course of failures at Iron Finance, Olympus DAO, Three Arrows Capital, LUNA and USDT, or found that capital trapped permanently in Celsius [Network] or Voyager [Digital].”
Even firms that were doing robust due diligence were impacted. Some of Sarson’s investors have found themselves down 75%-80%.
Let’s not ignore that there has been plenty of good news in the digital assets space.
For example, just this week Google and Coinbase signed an agreement to enable cloud payments with crypto. Also, BNY Mellon announced that it will custody crypto and Betterment announced that it will offer crypto allocations within its robo-advisor platform.
Yet, in the current environment even good news is met with pessimism.
Take Nova Labs, the company behind crypto-powered wireless network Helium, as an example. Nova Labs is creating a decentralized wireless network using blockchain technology. Earlier this year it had a successful fundraising round from the likes of Tiger Global and Andreessen Horowitz, and it recently announced a partnership with T-Mobile to handle the “last mile” of its communications network.
Despite a novel idea and a lot of promising news, Helium’s HNT token price has actually declined 90% from its peak.
“Everyone who would be allocating capital to these projects because they are in the know [don’t] have any cash to deploy,” Sarson said. “There’s no one left to speculate or recognize that some of these projects are making amazing achievements.”
So the big, “smart” money in the digital assets space is constrained and the market cannot find fair value in many tokens and projects.
Another example is Ethereum, which successfully merged to become a proof-of-stake blockchain last month, a move that should increase its energy efficiency by more than 99% and that gives ether holders the ability to stake their tokens in exchange for yield.
“The risk-reward profile for [ether] has improved, but the price is not going up,” Sarson said. “The market isn’t differentiating between the baby and the bathwater right now.”
What crypto needs to turn around
So when does the market turn the corner?
Increasing regulatory clarity may help to bring some institutional money from the sidelines, as would having capital locked up in the Celsius and Voyager bankruptcies released back to investors.
Otherwise, the next major shift could come when investors move more towards a risk-on stance.
“What advisors need to understand is that this year’s failures mainly negatively impacted crypto speculators,” Sarson said. “The people who really lost a lot of the money are the founders, early adopters and speculative investors who were driving the initial growth of this ecosystem. Without them, the ecosystem continues to grow at a rapid pace but asset prices are dislocated and by many measures remarkably low. It’s a fabulous opportunity.”

WASHINGTON — The federal government on Thursday laid out for the first time how it will determine penalties for foreign companies that break agreements to protect American national security.
When some foreign companies buy American firms, they sign agreements with the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States, a group of federal agencies, in order to mitigate national security concerns about the new ownership. The committee, known as CFIUS, has the ability to levy fines, some of them very large, on companies that break those agreements.
The new guidelines issued on Thursday give insight into how the committee, which wields considerable power over foreign transactions but is often seen as a black box, makes its decisions. In recent years, CFIUS has forced a Chinese company to sell the dating app Grindr and has made another Chinese firm divest an American maker of hotel management software. The committee is currently negotiating an agreement with TikTok, the popular video app, to resolve concerns posed by its Chinese ownership.
According to the new guidelines, the committee could consider more serious penalties when a foreign company’s failure to follow an agreement causes an especially grave risk to national security. CFIUS would also consider whether it took a long time for the committee to learn of a foreign company’s failure to comply with an agreement. And it would take into account whether a company’s failings had been intentional or simply negligent, according to the new guidelines, which are not binding.
President Biden has been trying to limit the sway that China and other adversaries have over American companies and consumers. Lawmakers and regulators have grown increasingly concerned that China could use its proximity to major computer chip manufacturers in Asia to influence the supply of a device that is central to a vast array of products, including appliances and automobiles. Many are also worried that Chinese-owned apps like TikTok and WeChat might hand over Americans’ data to Beijing under Chinese laws.
This month, the Biden administration issued restrictions that stop Americans from working with Chinese chip companies. Last month, Mr. Biden signed an executive order directing CFIUS to closely scrutinize whether corporate deals involving foreign companies, including from China, would expose the personal data of Americans or involve crucial emerging technologies.
The guidelines issued on Thursday do not name any specific foreign country.
Paul Rosen, the assistant secretary for investment security at the Treasury Department, which oversees CFIUS, said in a statement that most foreign companies abided by their agreements on national security. But, he said, “those who fail to comply with CFIUS mitigation agreements or other legal obligations will be held accountable.”
The committee has been busy in recent years, reviewing hundreds of corporate deal filings in 2021, according to the reports it sends to Congress. In some of those cases, the committee agreed to approve a deal only if the foreign company agreed to carry out measures designed to reduce its concerns.
Mr. Rosen said in his statement that the guidelines sent a “clear message” that it was “not optional” for companies to follow their agreements with the government.
Under federal law, the government can fine companies that violate their agreements with the committee. The fines can be significant, reaching as high as the total value of the corporate deal in question.
The guidelines also publicly explain how companies can challenge a penalty from the government, and they shed more light on how the committee monitors for violations. According to the memo, the government learns of possible violations from “across the U.S. government, publicly available information, third-party service providers (e.g., auditors and monitors), tips” and participants in the deal itself.

All nominations were thoroughly vetted by the TrustRadius research team, and supporting proof was provided by the nominated.
