West Newbury – Bernice Claire Griffin, age 93, lifelong resident of West Newbury, passed peacefully Sunday evening, October 9, 2022, just before midnight, at Country Center Nursing Home in Newburyport.
Born in Haverhill, May 24, 1929, she was one of three children of the late Russell H. and Doris L. (Rumford) Griffin and was a graduate of the former West Newbury High School.
Bernice had worked at the former Gould Shawmut in Newburyport until her retirement in 1984, where she had made many longtime friends.
She was a lifelong member of the West Newbury Congregational Church. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, sang in the choir, and volunteered countless hours in service to the Koinonia Ministries. Anyone attending the church in the 1990s through the first decade of the 21st century and beyond remember her “children’s moments” where she shared her faith in the most memorable ways during the service. Her love for Jesus was evident to all who knew her. In recent years, Bernice looked forward to participating each week in the Marion B. Susen Bible study.
Bernice was a 50 plus year member of Friendship Chapter, Order of Eastern Star having served as Worthy Matron, Associate Matron and Star Point. She had also been a 75-year member of Laurel Grange No. 161 of West Newbury as well as Essex County and Heritage Pomona Granges.
Bernice was kind-hearted, loving, considerate, and always ready to help with anything anyone needed. She had a welcoming smile that lit up a room. “Auntie” to so many, she was always singing or humming hymns and prayed continually for her friends and family. She knew that her eternal home was not here and lived life with her eyes on Jesus.
Her life’s legacy will continue to be treasured by her brother, Erwin R. Griffin and wife Priscilla Jean of Rochester, NH; seven nieces and four nephews, Russell Griffin and wife Sandra, Doris Buckley and husband Todd, Jennifer Griffin, Michelle Griffin, Angela McCarthy and partner Bruce Denton, Todd Griffin, Christine Griffin and partner Steven Todd, Sr., Joseph Griffin and wife Leslie, and Erica, Robert and Renee Griffin; along with countless grandnieces and grandnephews, all of whom loved her dearly. She was predeceased by her sister, G. Pearl Griffin, who passed on March 4, 2013.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, October 14, 2022 from 4 to 6 P.M. at the Highland Chapel of Paul C. Rogers Family Funeral Home, 2 Hillside Avenue, Amesbury. Friendship Chapter of O.E.S. will conduct Services at the end of the visiting hours, followed by Services by Laurel Grange. Her Funeral Service will be at the West Newbury Congregational Church, 308 Main Street, West Newbury, on Saturday, October 15, 2022 at 10 A.M., followed by burial at Walnut Hill Cemetery, West Newbury, where she will be reunited with her parents and her sister, Pearl. Memorial donations may be made in her name to the West Newbury Congregational Church and will be used to support children’s ministries.

The typical Google Maps use case doesn’t entail people planning their entire vacations in the app, but they can selectively find flight information, compare hotel prices and — Google announced Tuesday — mix and match prices of attractions tickets.
No, Google Maps isn’t a superapp yet but it’s edging in that direction, and touts 1 billion people monthly using the feature. Search “New York” in Google Maps and you’ll find restaurants, hotels, museums, transit options, pharmacies, ATMs, and now things to do.
In a blog post, Richard Holden, Google’s vice president of travel products, wrote: “Last year, we began showing ticket booking links on Search when people look for attractions, like the Boston Tea Party Museum, to help them quickly compare admissions prices across different partners. Now, this ticket information is available on Google Maps as well, where travelers often plan their itinerary for the day.”
In other changes announced Tuesday, Google is in the initial stages of introducing in Google search booking links for tours that are connected to attractions, such as a combination Vatican and Colosseum tour in Italy. Previously, Google had booking links to attractions tickets, such as for the Vatican, and some related tours were mixed in.
With the tweaks in Google search, the attractions tickets’ booking links and related tours are separated into distinct modules so they aren’t competing for attention, and users can readily make tour to tour comparisons. Google plans to introduce this functionality into Maps, as well.
Google currently only offers these booking links when they are connected to attractions, and doesn’t provide them for “food tours in Rome,” for example, but you can bet that will be coming.
Google Upped Its Ad Game for Things to Do
Importantly, Google announced that it expanded the reach and format of text ads for things to do that it launched initially in 32 cities in September 2021.
With the expansion, more graphical tours and activities ads get triggered with appropriate queries in 24 countries, which would be a greater revenue opportunity for Google.

Parallels to Google’s Hotel Playbook
Google dropped its Reserve with Google feature for tours and activities in August 2021, and one month later transitioned to a system of paid advertisements and free booking links for attractions, aggregators and operators.
That combination of advertisements plus free links is similar to the way it changed Google Hotels in March 2021, supplementing its years-long paid booking links from online travel agencies and hotels with free links for a sometimes long-tail array of providers.
In another parallel move, Holden detailed how attractions operators can now update their own ticket prices through their own Google business profile. Previously pricing updates could only be made on Google via a feed with a tie-in to a connectivity partner, so the do-it-yourself feature is likely most relevant for smaller operators. Holden wrote that these business profile updates would soon be available for tours and activity operators, and not just for the attractions themselves.
Again, this is what Google previously did for hotels, enabling them to manually update their rates in their Google business profiles if that’s the way they wanted to do them.
Google has lots of time and money to develop robust features for things to do, making itself an essential part of the sector’s fabric through its grip on search, knowledge about user behavior, and talent. Google over the years edged its way into the travel ecosystem for flights and hotels, and is patiently building out vacation rentals (although Airbnb doesn’t participate), things to do, and newly, trains in Europe.
Google has all the time in the world to consolidate its position in tours and activities — unless regulators say otherwise.

A NEW scheme has been launched to help improve the health of people living in some of our area’s most challenged communities.
Through the ‘Our Health Matters’ scheme, pilot projects are being set up in six district council wards, in Hertsmere, Epping Forest and Harlow, where residents face some of the biggest barriers to living long, happy and healthy lives.
Staff called ‘Community Connectors’ will work alongside families, individuals and community groups to really understand the issues that affect their health. Residents and Community Connectors will then work together to ensure that people living with serious health conditions including severe mental illness, high blood pressure and respiratory diseases get the expert help they need, and to improve the detection of cancer signs and symptoms.
As well as helping people to get the healthcare they need, when they need it, Community Connectors will work with local people to develop schemes in their area that help people to stay well.
Dr Jane Halpin, the Chief Executive of the Hertfordshire and west Essex Integrated Care Board said:
“This programme is about much more than just providing healthcare. It involves listening to communities to find out what is making people ill in the first place, and then making the changes that will make a difference. We know that poor health can be caused by loneliness, anxiety, poverty, crime, inadequate housing and unemployment – as well as a number of other causes that can’t be addressed by healthcare professionals alone.
“By taking a new, community-based approach we hope to help people to have the happy, healthy lives that we would all like to see for ourselves and our families.”
NHS and social care organisations from the Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care System area are working with the voluntary and community sector organisations ‘Communities 1st’ in Hertfordshire and ‘Rainbow Services’ in west Essex to develop and deliver the Community Connectors programme locally. Communities 1st will deliver the programme in the Cowley Hill and Brook Meadow wards in Hertsmere, and Rainbow Services will deliver the programme in the Loughton Alderton & Waltham Abbey Paternoster wards in Epping Forest, and the Toddbrook and Staple Tye Wards in Harlow.
The programme will run until March 2024, with the £100,000 costs met by a national scheme, following a successful bid by organisations from the Hertfordshire and west Essex Integrated Care System.
Tim Anfilogoff Head of Community Resilience for the Hertfordshire and West Essex Integrated Care Board, said: “The Our Health Matters approach recognises that people and communities often know what they need and what would work, and that the NHS and our public and voluntary sector services needs to hear from these communities.
“By working alongside people, listening to them, supporting them and sharing their ideas, we can take a big step forward in addressing the gaps in healthcare.”

Frank Martinez has always found food trucks to be a cool and unique consumer experience. Considering his own love for hot dogs, it had been a dream of his for years to operate a food truck of his own. This past weekend, his dreams were finally made into a reality when he officially opened Spanky’s Wieners.
Spanky’s Wieners on 2370 N. Walnut Rd. offers over 10 hot dogs, each with a wild and unique twist. Martinez shared that the grand opening of his business on Oct. 8 was a long time coming.
“I really like the food truck idea,” Martinez said. “I’ve been talking about this idea for about the past five years now, maybe even longer. I wanted to make something happen, so I just decided to make the move. I told myself, ‘You’re not going to accomplish anything by not trying, so if I fail, at least I tried, and if I succeed, it’ll be awesome.’”
After working at Hilmar Cheese for over 15 years, Martinez left his job to focus on his business endeavors full-time, with one of the first steps taken being to build the truck itself. In February, the truck began to be custom built by Modesto’s AP Welding and was completed in June. Now having the truck secured, Martinez had to go through the process of finding a location to park it. He explained that he posted photos of the truck’s build along alongside some of the unique hot dogs to give people an idea of the vision he had for the business. Eventually, Jesse Henrich of Turlock Hydroponics approached Martinez with the opportunity of parking his truck in front of his store.
“The parking lot here is pretty spacious, so it felt like the perfect opportunity,” Martinez said. “Jesse is a big part of why I’m stationed here, so I appreciate him a lot.”

Within the parking lot, the food truck is hard to miss. A glossy, white build with the business’ own logo reading “Spanky’s Wieners” is sure to catch the attention of anybody driving or strolling by.
“Spanky has been my nickname for almost my entire life. All my family knows me as Spanky and even my bosses when I worked at Hilmar Cheese called me Spanky. Almost nobody actually calls me Frank,” Martinez explained. “I wanted a name that was going to pop. It’s kind of edgy and the whole purpose is to make people laugh and put smiles on faces, and I guess with my nickname it worked out perfectly.”
While the name is one to be remembered, Martinez hopes that the thing that stands out most are the hot dogs and their unlikely toppings. From mac and cheese to Hot Cheetos to carne asada or to peanut butter & jelly, Martinez is confident that customers won’t find a menu quite like this in the region.
According to Martinez, the most popular hot dogs on the menu thus far include the Elote Dawg, the Casper Dog, the Chili Dog and the Spanky Supreme. The Elote Dawg features corn, mayo, cotija cheese and chili powder. The Casper Dog is a popular Bay Area dog that features cheese, mustard, relish tomato and onion. The Chili Dog is another traditional dog that features chili, cheese, tomato and onion. Meanwhile, the Spanky Supreme includes carne asada, onions, bell pepper and nacho cheese.
Some of the crazier hot dogs on the menu are the K Dogg, the Mac Dogg and the Frito Boat Dog. The K Dogg includes bacon, peanut butter and strawberry jelly. The Mac Dogg has bacon, mac and cheese and hot Cheeto crumbles. The Frito Boat Dog features Frito chips, chili, nacho cheese and onions.
And for those who want to get really risky, the truck offers what they call the Mystery Mutt, which is basically whatever Martinez feels like throwing on a hot dog at that given time. Luckily, customers can also take control with the Spanky Your Way option, which allows customers to pick and choose their own toppings.
“We have our menu, but if there’s anything specific you want, we can make it for you. And you never know, some of the creations we make can make it onto the permanent menu,” Martinez said.
At the time of this publication, Martinez shared that the food truck is still working out its hours of operation.
“I have my fiancé helping me out and it’s a new experience for both of us,” he said. ‘We’re still figuring out the flow and what works for us.”
Eventually, the truck will be open for six days out of the week with hours of operation being between 10:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. For now, Martinez encourages people to follow @SpankysWieners on Instagram and Spanky’s Wieners on Facebook.
“From never working in a food trailer before and quitting my job, it was a risk, but even after three days being out here, it’s already rewarding,” Martinez said. “I’m looking forward to see where this all goes and I’m just extremely grateful.”

DUBAI (Reuters) – Crypto investment products firm 21.co said on Wednesday its subsidiary 21Shares AG has listed a bitcoin exchange-traded product on Nasdaq Dubai, making it the Middle East’s first physically-backed bitcoin ETP.
The 21Shares Bitcoin ETP trades, under the ticker ABTC, in the same way as the 21Shares Bitcoin ETP in Europe, 21.co said in a statement.
Dubai has ambitions to become a global cryptocurrency hub and has attracted big industry players to set up shop like Binance, which went on a UAE hiring spree this year and is helping to shape the Middle East commercial hub’s virtual assets regulations.
Following the Dubai listing, 21Shares has 46 listed products in seven countries, 21.co added.
Swiss-based 21.co last month raised $25 million in a funding round that valued it at $2 billion, which it said made it “Switzerland’s largest crypto unicorn”.
The crypto market has suffered a rout that has forced some of its biggest players to lay off thousands of employees to cut costs.
But Sherif El-Haddad, appointed 21Shares head of Middle East in August, was upbeat, saying cryptocurrencies were “fast becoming the asset of the future for investors and wealth managers around the world”.
The Middle East and North Africa is the world’s fastest-growing cryptocurrency region, where the volume of crypto received jumped 48% in the year to June, blockchain researcher Chainalysis said in a report last week.
Hany Rashwan, CEO and co-founder of 21Shares, said in the statement the company “will continue to support the Middle East’s ambitions to become a global crypto hub”.

Matthew Luskey, assistant director of the University of Minnesota’s writing across the curriculum program, wants undergraduates in his classes to talk with each other when they first encounter an essay such as Vershawn Ashanti Young’s “Should Writers Use Their Own English?” But several of his classes are blended, which means that some of the “talking” needs to happen online.
Luskey could direct students to a discussion board in the learning management system, but “talking” there tends to be linear; one student may comment, followed by one or two replies, followed by another student comment and so on. Also, when a student wants to refer to a section of the text on a discussion board, they must import the quote, where it sits apart from the rest of the essay, cutting short conversations that might have naturally emerged from the context.
For these reasons, Luskey is a proponent of online tools that facilitate social annotation—collaborative reading, thinking and marking up of an article, webpage, podcast, collection of images or video. Now, a new study offers evidence supporting what Luskey has long observed: online social annotation helps students understand and construct knowledge around scholarly content, while at the same time building community.
Social annotation tools may be the natural evolution of collaborative learning and reading in online spaces. Instead of students engaging in discussions about a text in a corner of a learning management platform, they congregate over the source itself. Many faculty members are enthusiastic proponents of social annotation tools, even while acknowledging their limitations.
“It’s bringing that collaborative energy right to the thing, with zero distance between it and our peers,” said Dan Whaley, CEO and founder of Hypothesis, a company that creates open-source software and pushes for standards in online social annotation.
A Digital Upgrade for an Age-Old Practice
Students have long marked up texts to make sense of reading. When they collaborate online, they not only have access to a wider range of annotation tools for text but also may annotate a wider range of content, including audio and visual sources.
To start, students go online and open an article, book, graph, photo, webpage or other object of study. Then, working asynchronously, they highlight passages and add digital comments, questions, links, images or audio or video clips. When the object of study is an audio file or video, the annotations are anchored with a time stamp. Students can also tag and aggregate notes with hashtags. The social part happens when they read and respond to each other’s annotations.
No fancy tools are needed. Students may, for example, work together on a shared Google document. But for PDFs, webpages or other artifacts, they may need a tool such as Hypothesis, a free browser extension that allows users to make private, semiprivate or public annotations.
“Social annotation became hot in the pandemic,” Luskey said. “People were looking—sometimes desperately—for ways to maintain community in online spaces that weren’t initially designed to be an online space.”
Benefits of Social Annotation
When students use social annotation tools to study a shared piece of writing or other object, their peer-to-peer interaction makes their thinking visible and invites discussion.
“The text shapes the form of the conversation that is happening,” said Esteban Morales, a doctoral student in the University of British Columbia language and literacy education program. The marked-up version that results serves as a “heat map” for the interaction.
When social annotation happens online, students construct knowledge by way of elaborating, clarifying and asking questions, according to a study Morales and his team published this year based on 2,121 annotations written by 59 students in three undergraduate courses at a Canadian university. Students might, for example, list assumptions in a reading, connect ideas with examples or ask questions that prompt further discussion.
At the same time, students who engage in online social annotation also build consensus, support each other and debate—though to a lesser degree than they elaborate or clarify, and ask questions—according to the study. For example, they might negotiate a definition or interpretation, empathize with each other, or offer a different point of view in a direct reply.
Social annotation activities may also redress instances of inequity. Unlike in-person class discussions, students who prefer to reflect before responding have equal opportunity (within the bounds of the assignment deadline) as those who are quick to reply. Likewise, marginalized students who may be less inclined to speak in class may be more at ease adding their voices to the digital notes.
Limitations of Social Annotation
Despite the benefits of social annotation, instructors interested in incorporating the practice into their teaching can get started in less-than-perfect ways, according to proponents.
As with other technology, instructors should first ensure that they know how to use the tool. Then they should allocate class time to instruct students on its use. Even when all are versed in the mechanics, students may need guidance on how to engage.
“Something similar happens with peer response, right?” Luskey said. “The research shows it’s a good practice, but we’ve all had crappy experiences doing peer response—oftentimes when we don’t know what we’re supposed to be doing, when there’s no protocol, procedure or clarity about the process.”
Guidance for annotators often involves two steps.
“Highlight something that is confusing and ask a question about it,” Derek Bruff, visiting associate director at the University of Mississippi’s Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, suggested as an example. “Highlight something that you find surprising and then write why you find it surprising. Highlight something that reminds you of something else we studied, and make that connection explicit.”
Social annotation may help students grapple with, for example, a first pass on a reading, though it may be less effective when they are asked to summarize or respond to an argument about a whole document, according to Bruff. Also, faculty members who adopt the tools specifically for autograding features may be disappointed.
“They’re not just there because they must make seven annotations and respond to two of their peers’ comments,” Bruff said. “That’s going to bring a lot of artificiality to it.”
Social Annotation Beyond the Classroom
Ithaka, a nonprofit focused on improving access to knowledge and education, recently made a $2.5 million investment in Anno, the public benefit corporation that is home to Hypothesis. The two organizations are also working together on a pilot project that will enable instructors and students at select colleges to use Hypothesis to annotate articles available in JSTOR within their learning management systems. In time, they plan to provide the service to all JSTOR users.
“We’re hopeful that connecting Hypothesis and JSTOR will accelerate the beneficial use of annotation by faculty and students all over the world,” Kevin Guthrie, president of Ithaka, said of the digital library that houses more than 12 million journal articles, books, images and primary sources spanning 75 disciplines.
Social annotation advocates in academe and beyond, including a (now-closed) working group of the World Wide Web Consortium that develops internet standards, envision a world in which the practice of layering conversation over original sources is interoperable and ubiquitous.
“I don’t know ultimately whether it will be Hypothesis that brings [open interoperable annotation] to the world—we certainly hope so—but it’s coming,” Whaley said. “This is a core new capability that will be embedded everywhere … in the same way that the web and [learning management systems] are ubiquitous. Students will take for granted that somebody is there to help on that sentence … that help is on tap whenever and wherever they might need it.”

Also, Local Law No 1: the Community Preservation Fund, a local effort which will serve to safeguard our drinking water, preserve farmland and preserve our open space. Vote Yes.
Finally, Town Proposition No 2: The Library Board, as required by New York State Law, must ask local voters to approve an increase to their overall budget. You can play your part by voting Yes on the library budget.

Ah, yes. If only Donald Trump were still president, hurricanes wouldn’t be allowed in Florida. That’s true because he would have black-Sharpied in, using his fine-point permanent marker and “best-ever” draftsmanship, a different path for the hurricane to follow.
Hmm, or just maybe, with a fireworks factory brainchild-like idea, and with a big yeah, “I’m going to see it through till the end, don’t worry” harebrained-scheme determination, he could have set off a nuclear device to break up the storm. Better yet, with a laser-focused mind-trick visualization, our “stable genius’’ bearing down and thinking away the hurricane definitely could declassify them as sunshowers.
And remember, for 70 million of our neighbors, he was chosen by our Lord, from before the beginning of all time as a special dispensation to this, his beloved country, to save us from the twin scourges of drag-queen story hour and higher top marginal income tax rates.
Bottom line: It’s always darkest just before it goes completely black.

I doubt anyone who is living in and is involved with the Town knows more than I, a 15-year member and former chair of the Zoning Board of Appeals, about the zoning law. Mass gathering permits are issued when events are on public property and potentially could strain Woodstock’s resources. They are not issued, nor are they needed, for allowable events on private property.
Reinforcing my understanding is the Zoning Enforcement officer’s response to a question regarding mass gatherings: “In general, no, I do not see where a mass gathering permit is needed on private property in our zoning.” Note too this statement from the Town Clerk’s Office: “We typically only issue mass gathering permits which affect the Town – re: streets or property.”
The validity of a mass gathering permit issued by McKenna was questioned at a Town Board meeting. Councilman Radcliff said McKenna had shown him at a previous meeting in his office “a May 25 [mass gathering] permit that turned out not to be a permit at all and that [he] had given to the Bearsville Center.” What our supervisor did was to take it upon himself to circumvent our noise ordinance by filling out mass gathering permits as a means to allow several events on private properties. As usual, McKenna “defended the permits he issued and said they are not bogus. He said he is using a form designed by the late Town supervisor Jeremy Wilber, which is a mass gathering permit.” What McKenna failed to note was the public purpose of a mass gathering permit.

Dear Senator:
“War is a racket. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses of lives.”
In order to support these wars, though the justification is to “trim the benefits outlays” as they are getting out of control. The Republicans hated the benefit state, and any justification they can devise to attack them is fair game. And what better fair game than “drumming up” the dangers from another country, necessitating the defense outlays, with millions of seniors feeling the effect of this “drumming up”?
Senator, I’m a selfish man. Trump’s threat upon my benefits has driven me out of the Republican Party into the Democratic Party, where I donate money to the party as well as the AARP and the NCPSSM. I don’t want anyone, even Christ himself, screwing around with my benefits that I have paid for!
I write letter after letter to the 4,200 subscribers in the 19th Congressional District, bringing to their attention the hell that waits for all seniors with Trump in the White House and both chambers Republican.
When Congressman Delgado was running for the seat of representative John Faso, I went all out with letters to our consumers warning them that Faso has to be defeated and Delgado elected to his position in the 19th Congressional District. Needless to say, Faso was defeated. The Democrats took control of the House. The seniors now have a block against “His Lordship’s” agenda, not only with our benefits but other aspects as well.
I have received kudos for my letters after Delgado was elected, bringing to the forefront information that was needed for some of them to make an informed vote. But the fight is not over for the seniors. The 2020/2022/2024 elections will be a nasty, personal attack on both sides that will be absolutely disgusting. They have already started.
I don’t want to take any more of your time, Senator, but I want to leave you with a thought. When 80-year-old men who have been party members for years, and others as well, are so disgusted with the Republican Party which allows someone like the present occupant of the Oval Office (Trump) to bully their representatives, “hissy fit” them, then it is time to leave the party.
Subsequently, June 22, 2019, I submitted an official request to enroll in the Democratic Party. And that, Senator, should be a concern for the Republican Party. I will copy other senators with this letter.

Mitch McConnell just broke the straw of the camel’s back, so the saying goes. He advocates a national ban on abortion. In the name of all that is holy, these men have to get off their control issues regarding women, ancient dictums that declare us subservient to the human race, that we came from Adam’s rib et cetera.
My views on this issue for years: Abortion should not be used as a convenient birth control device. Women having six, nine, 12 is bad for no other reason than their bodies take a toll. Abortion is okay up to the first 15, 18 weeks. After that, a resounding “No!’
There should be a record kept when a woman has an abortion. After three, no more. She/her partner, if they have any brains, should work out proper birth control methods that suit one another by the time the third abortion takes place.

The economy slowed in August, contracting by 0.3% on the previous month.
The growth experienced in July has also been revised downwards, from the 0.2% previously recorded to just 0.1%.
The Office for National Statistics released its latest reading on the UK’s performance as the government frets over the prospect of recession ahead, given the toll placed on demand by the cost of living crisis.
August’s result is worse than expected, as no growth, rather than economy shrinkage was anticipated.
Action by the Bank of England to tame inflation, through successive interest rate increases, is adding to the cost burden for borrowers.
The Bank’s tightening has placed its mandate to control inflation at odds with the agenda of the new Truss administration, which has set a target for annual economic growth of 2.5%.
The mini-budget last month, which contained energy bill help for households and businesses along with a series of tax cuts, prompted turmoil on financial markets.
The resulting crisis of credibility forced down the value of the pound and raised government borrowing costs to such an extent that the Bank had to intervene.
The International Monetary Fund warned on Tuesday that the government should ensure its tax and spending plans are in line with the Bank of England’s inflation-fighting remit.
In other words, the priority should be tackling inflation rather than adding to the price problem through tax giveaways to achieve economic growth.
The IMF welcomed the prospect of an earlier-than-expected debt plan from Kwasi Kwarteng, the chancellor.
That will now be delivered to MPs on 31 October and contain independent analysis from the Office for Budget Responsibility.

WILLIAMSTOWN — Williamstown’s soccer match with Parkersburg South on Tuesday afternoon had a touch of nostalgia attached to it.
Nicho Rowland scored both goals for South as the Patriots defeated the Yellowjackets 2-1 in the final high school soccer match slated for the Williamstown Soccer Complex. Next season, Williamstown’s new home will be the high school football stadium and the newly-installed turf planned for the facility.
“We have been working on this field here at the soccer complex for a long time — probably 15 years as a rec program,” Williamstown coach Jason Hill said. “I want to give a shout out to Mike Albertson, who I call the grandfather of Williamstown soccer.
“We are going to turn this into a practice facility then we will play at the football field and that will be big for the Williamstown kids getting to play on campus. It will be easier to find, that’s for sure.”
Despite the regular-season loss, Williamstown (8-9-1) feels good about their chances for the postseason, which begins with next Monday’s Class AA/A sectional quarterfinal match at Nitro. The Yellowjackets are the No. 6 seed and a win would send them into Tuesday’s semifinal against either No. 7 Parkersburg Catholic or No. 2 Ravenswood.
“We lost a game last week at Trinity Christian, and I say only 3-0 because they are ranked sixth in the state and a high quality team — I felt we really played them well and defended them well,” Hill continued.
“We have some new schemes on defense to make us more effective. Coaches always say you wanted to be playing your best ball at the end of the season.”
On the other end of the sidelines, South improved to 7-12-0 with one road test remaining Thursday at Spring Valley. The Patriots first postseason test occurs Monday against Parkersburg at Stadium Field.
“We passed well today — we had some good chances; we couldn’t finish,” said South assistant coach Nick Johnston, who was filling in for head coach Jamie Whitlatch. Whitlatch was sitting out the first of a two-game suspension after receiving a red card in the team’s previous match. “We might have the best field goal kickers.
“In the second half, the guys played clean. I was wish Jamie was here, but I am proud of our boys.”
Williamstown gave South a wake-up call when freshman Mason Mercer rifled a shot from the left side of the field and found the far corner of the net open for a Yellowjacket 1-0 lead at the 24:35 mark of the first half.
“Our kids came out and put South a little bit on their back-foot, probably surprised them a bit coming over to play to us and our co-ed team,” Hill said. “This year is a bit of a rebuilding year with the soccer program in general. The kids played better than we have been. Our consistency was a little better and that’s all we ask for.”
The lead nearly stood in place for the entire half, but Rowland ruined those notions with 2:47 remaining before intermission. Teammate Toby Adebulu took the dribble deep into Williamstown territory and found Rowland position in front of the net on the centering pass. Rowland converted for the 1-1 tie.
The same Patriot duo hooked up again for the eventual game-winner midway in the second half. This time, Adebulu took over the possession near midfield, dribbled almost unabated as he approached the net from the left side of the field. Again, he found Rowland on the opposite side. Rowland toe-tapped the ball just past the keeper. With 24:36 remaining in regulation, South led 2-1.
South’s defense played a clean final five minutes and did not allow a shot on goal. Knowing ahead of time Williamstown’s field and shorter distances between opposing goals, the Patriots simulated the conditions in practice this week.
“We practiced with the short field yesterday and moved the goals up,” Johnston said. “It’s hard to simulate, but our guys did well not trying to kick the long ball.”

Dr Paramjeet Kaur, Principal BCM Arya Model School presented the Impact of Technology on today’s Education and how this facility and the Metaverse programmes run by MBCIE will enable the young generation not only to learn but also provide hands-on experience to better prepare them for the future.
Dr Vandna Shahi, Principal of BCM School Basant Avenue addressed the audience highlighting the need for educators to adopt immersive technologies for 21st-century skillsets.

Cardano aims to solve the blockchain trilemma through its sophisticated proof-of-stake (PoS) protocol called Ouroboros. However, its native token has been hard-hit by the bearish waves that have swept through the crypto market.

Vasil Upgrade a Stepping Stone
The Cardano team, led by former Ethereum co-founder Charles Hoskinson, has been deploying upgrades. The latest is the Vasil hard fork, which makes the peer-reviewed blockchain more scalable with minimal user cost.
However, the team is not done yet, with even more scheduled upgrades expected in the future. At the moment, Cardano is reaping the benefits of the Vasil Upgrade, although its native token price has not reflected this.
Since the deployment of the hard fork, the transactions on Cardano’s layer-1 blockchain have doubled. Over 3,445 smart contracts have been deployed on its Plutus V1 Scripts. The figure for its Timelock Scripts has also risen. According to data from the Cardano Blockchain Insights team, there are now 69,670 self-executing commands on the blockchain.
Cardano Only Second Behind Bitcoin in On-chain Transactions
Aside from the recently concluded Vasil Upgrade, the Cardano team has several targets to hit before launching fully into the marketplace. But this delay has not deterred investors and blockchain users, as all indicators show.
According to a recently released Messari on-chain activity log, Cardano is the second most active blockchain network, only behind Bitcoin. The Ouroboros protocol has so far processed $3.09 billion in smart contracts transactions, beating Ethereum’s $1.7 billion figure. This is despite Ethereum’s transition to a full PoS protocol in September.
With Cardano showing strong on-chain activity, the idea of it being a ghost chain is debunked. Other data revealed that over 25% of all blockchain transactions were generated in the past year in a period in which Bitcoin and Ethereum gained the most attention from investors and the media. This shows strong investor awareness about Cardano’s long-term potential and ability to deliver on its promises.
Cardano Trees Pointing to ESG-Minded Investors
The Cardano monthly on-chain stats have shown how far the blockchain has come, with over 3.6 million ADA wallets created.
But its efforts to enable a greener ecosystem are what has gained the attention of environmentally conscious investors. Its Ouroboros protocol requires minimal energy for network transactions to be confirmed. Cardano has been working to create a more sustainable environment with Veritree. According to Veritree and Cardano, the Cardano Trees initiative recently crossed the 35% landmark; they are working towards planting 1 million trees globally.
At press time, the ADA token is trading at $0.39, indicating a downtrend of 5.05% in the past day. However, ADA’s strong fundamentals could see the digital asset hit a new record high in the coming months.

OAKLAND, Calif./NEW YORK Oct 11 (Reuters) – The U.S. is scrambling to tackle unintended consequences of its new export curbs on China’s chip industry that could inadvertently harm the semiconductor supply chain, people familiar with the matter said.
By late Tuesday, hours before a new restriction took effect, South Korean memory chipmaker SK Hynix Inc (000660.KS) said it got authorization from the United States to receive goods for its chip production facilities in China without additional licensing imposed by the new rules.
The Biden administration had planned to spare foreign companies operating in China such as SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics Co (005930.KS) from the brunt of new restrictions, but the rules published Friday did not exempt such firms.

As published, the rules require licenses before U.S. exports can be shipped to facilities with advanced chip production in China as part of a U.S. bid to slow China’s technological and military advances.
And as of midnight Tuesday, vendors also cannot support, service and send non-U.S. supplies to the China-based factories without licenses if U.S. companies or people are involved.
As a result, even basic items like light bulbs, springs, and bolts that keep tools running may not have been able to be shipped until vendors are granted licenses. And without the minute-by-minute support the foundries need, they could begin shutting down, one source said.
“Our discussions with the Department of Commerce led to an approval to supply equipment and items needed for development and production of DRAM semiconductors in Chinese facilities without additional licensing requirements,” SK Hynix said in a statement.
The company said the change would help avoid disruptions to the supply chain and that the authorization is for a year.
Another source said the temporary fix was until a longer-term solution could be worked out.
At least one other non-Chinese company received a similar authorization, a third source said.
A U.S. Commerce Department spokesperson did not directly respond to a request for comment on the authorizations, but said the department hopes to get input from stakeholders about the rule and may consider changes.
A White House spokesperson also did not respond to a request for comment.
“Unless the authorization was issued, a variety of equipment and other suppliers would have had to pull their personnel from the fabs in China,” one of the sources said.
The U.S. planned to review licenses for non-Chinese factories in China hit by the new restrictions on a case-by-case basis, but even if approved that could create delays in shipments. Licenses for Chinese chip factories were likely to be denied.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.(2330.TW) and Intel Corp (INTC.O) also operate chip factories in China.
The Chinese chip facilities are not expected to get any reprieve.

KIM MAIR, chair of the Council of Voluntary Social Services (CVSS), the coordinating body for non-governmental organisations (NGOs) serving in Jamaica, says that technology and data should be used to develop interventions to aid vulnerable groups, including those affected by lupus.
Mair made the recommendation while addressing the launch of Lupus Awareness Month on October 3 under the theme ‘LevelUP’, which was organised by the Lupus Foundation of Jamaica (LFJ).
“We cannot become complacent, but instead, activate more channels, capture more data, expand interaction across the globe, and adopt more innovative ways to serve our lupus community, using data,” she said.
The CVSS chair agreed with the recommendation by the LFJ to establish a registry, as she said this will accurately account for those who pass away from the disease.
“Too many cases are classified as dying from infections, renal failure or cardiovascular events, and the true culprit of lupus is not named,” she pointed out.

The capturing and reporting of data serve to accurately attribute the loss of life to lupus, and the analysis of data supports lobbying for resources for research and treatment.
Mair called for collaboration with the LFJ to formulate policies to reduce imbalances in the health sector and social inequality among social groups. She also underscored the importance of volunteering with the foundation to ensure that no Jamaican impacted by lupus is left behind.
“Offer your time and talent to the Lupus Foundation of Jamaica, to help improve the lives of lupus fighters and spread awareness of this cruel disease. Participate to help those impacted by lupus to be proactive, and empower them with the knowledge so that they can recover better,” she said.
“Let us give, while still advocating and lobby for the Government to provide a standard of healthcare to help our citizens not just to survive, but enjoy a quality life by delivering aid and services that are accessible and cost-effective,” she added.
During the month of October, the LFJ has organised several activities to educate persons about the disease. These include a virtual programme, titled ‘Ask the Experts Live Q&A’ with special guest Dr Susan Manzi, a medical expert and immediate past chair of the Lupus Foundation of America; campus awareness outreach programmes across tertiary institutions; a series of features on lupus warriors; and Purple Fridays, where everyone is encouraged to wear purple on that day in support of those affected by the disease.
Jamaica has one of the highest rates of lupus worldwide, with women and caregivers mostly affected. An estimated 6,000 Jamaicans are believed to be affected by lupus. Eighty per cent of persons are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 44, with 22 years being the average age to receive a lupus diagnosis. The disease is considered an important underlying cause of premature deaths, particularly among young people.

Chesterfield County Police are searching for a missing man who was last seen on Sept. 8.
Kenneth Irving, 60, of the 1800 block of Berkeley Avenue in Petersburg, was last seen at his place of employment in the 7500 block of Whitepine Road in Chesterfield on Sept. 8. A family member reported Irving missing to police on Sept. 15.
Irving is described as a white male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighing about 165 pounds. He has brown eyes and gray hair. He is known to drive a blue Jeep Grand Cherokee bearing Virginia tags JVY-6091 and to frequent hotels in the area of Interstate 95 and Willis Road.

Chesterfield County Police have arrested a suspect in relation to a homicide that occurred in the 5000 block of Vayo Avenue on Sept. 30.
At about 5 a.m. on Sept. 30, a motorist saw a male lying in the road in the 5000 block of Vayo Avenue. Police responded and discovered a male, identified as David Christopher Rosado, 36, deceased in the roadway. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that Rosado, of the 5000 block of Vayo Avenue, died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds.
On Sunday, Oct. 2, police arrested Kevin W. Haymore, 21, in relation to the homicide. Haymore, of the 1300 block of W. Graham Road in Richmond, was charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond.
Police continue their investigation; at this point, this homicide does not appear to have been a random act. Anyone with any information should contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660.

Chesterfield County Police have arrested a former Chesterfield County Public Schools teacher in relation to the sexual assault of a juvenile female student.
Police said Yves G. Denton, 42, sexually assaulted a then-17-year-old female student while in a custodial relationship. At the time of the assault, which occurred in December 2021 and was reported to the police in February 2022, Denton was a teacher at Thomas Dale High School and the victim was a student at the school. The victim had previously been one of Denton’s students but was not his student at the time of the assault. The assault did not occur on school property.
After an extensive investigation, Denton, of the 1100 block of Salisbury Drive in Chesterfield, was arrested on Oct. 4, and charged with taking indecent liberties with a child by custodian and assault. He was released from the Chesterfield County Jail on an unsecured bond following a court appearance.
Police continue to investigate this incident. Anyone with information should contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251.
Chesterfield County Police are investigating a fatal crash that occurred in the area of Courthouse Road and Dakins Drive at about 6:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5.
Police said a 2007 Kawasaki motorcycle, operated by Nathan C. Lysinger, 21, was traveling north on Courthouse Road when a 2012 Toyota Camry turned onto Courthouse Road from Dakins Drive. The motorcycle struck the Camry. Lysinger, of the 1700 block of Queen Elizabeth Avenue in Chesterfield, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash; the occupants of the Camry were not injured.

Let’s begin. The government will seek to decriminalise a wide gamut of economic offences through a new Bill to be introduced in the winter session of Parliament, official sources told FE. Suzan Kaye Schoelen was born Dec. 31, 1946 in Kingfisher, the oldest of six children to Edward J. Schoelen and Edna (Soudek) Schoelen.
She passed away Aug. 26, 2022, in Euless, Texas.
Suzan was a 1964 graduate of Kingfisher High School.
Following graduation, she went to cosmetology school and later opened Suz’Anns Salon.
She worked very hard to have a successful business while making many lasting friendships.
In 1991, Suzan married Chas Riggs in Oklahoma City.
Chas took a job in Texas in 1994 and Suzan continued her career as a hairstylist.
By moving to Texas, she would be close to her son Patrick and wife Shana and their children Kendal and Konlan.
She was able to get back and see her family in Oklahoma as much as possible. She was very proud of her sons and grandchildren.
Suzan was a lifetime practitioner. She attended Celebration of Life and the Dallas Center for Spiritual Living.
In the last several years, Suzan faced multiple health challenges related to kidney and heart problems, yet she maintained her signature positive attitude through it all.
Suzan was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers Dennis Schoelen and Neil Schoelen; brother-in-law James Lombardo; and nephews Brian Schoelen and Brad Schoelen.
She is survived by sons Patrick McKinley (Shana) and John McKinley, all of Texas; brothers Norman Schoelen and Terry Schoelen (Marcy); sister Penny Lombardo; sisters-in-law Eddie Schoelen (Dennis), Susie Schoelen (Neil); grandchildren Kendal and Konlan McKinley; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Center for Spiritual Living, 4801 Spring Valley Road, Suite 115, Dallas, Texas.

Watson returned to the team’s training facility for the first time since August, when he began serving his 11-game NFL suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy following sexual misconduct allegations.
He’d been banned since Aug. 30 after agreeing to a settlement with the league over accusations of lewd actions during massage therapy sessions made by two dozen women in Texas when he played for Houston.
The three-time Pro Bowler can now attend team meetings, interact with coaches and participate in Cleveland’s game planning. He’s also free to work out in the weight room, but he’s not eligible to practice until Nov. 14.
Following months of legal maneuvering, Watson agreed to the suspension, a $5 million fine and to undergo counseling and treatment as part of his settlement with the league on Aug. 18.
As long as he fulfills the outlined provisions, Watson will be eligible for full reinstatement on Nov. 28 and can play in his first game on Dec. 4 against the Texans, who drafted him in 2017 and then traded him in March to the Browns amid his legal troubles.

Last October, Meta—the rebranded parent company of Facebook and Instagram—unveiled its grand plan to help build the future immersive internet of the metaverse. Since then, the social media giant’s stock price has fallen by 60%, its growth has stalled, and metaverse buzz has both surged and cooled, drawing backlash in the process.
Despite all of that, Meta is still fixated on building its vision. Today, the company used its annual Meta Connect conference keynote to share its latest advancements for the metaverse, including a powerful new virtual reality (VR) headset to serve as another stepping stone towards more lavish online worlds and interactions.
Some Web3 builders have feared Meta’s role in building the metaverse, expecting the social media firm to develop another “walled garden” or closed ecosystem. But the company has gradually shifted its messaging to suggest a different approach. Today, co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg took his firmest stance yet regarding the potential of an open metaverse.
Zuckerberg talked about the history of open and closed ecosystems across past computing eras, noting that “closed ecosystems focus on tight control and integration” and that such platforms ultimately claim most of the created value. When it comes to the metaverse, however, Zuckerberg made clear that Meta values a different approach.
“I strongly believe that an open, interoperable metaverse built by many different developers and companies is going to be better for everyone,” he said.
Granted, that’s not the same as unambiguously stating that Facebook’s metaverse will be built on blockchain technology, work with NFT assets built on public blockchain platforms like Ethereum and Solana, or support cryptocurrencies. But it’s an acknowledgment that Meta isn’t billing itself as the sole or primary builder of the metaverse.
Nick Clegg, Meta’s President of Global Affairs, shared similar comments in an essay published in May. Zuckerberg also said in a podcast interview at the time that he’s open to interoperability in the metaverse—but didn’t firmly detail the company’s plans in that regard.
Today, Zuckerberg spoke of interoperability for avatar customizations, but that may simply mean that apparel and accessories can be carried over to other platforms that support Meta’s avatar tech, rather than used freely with other types of NFT-based avatars.
Over the past several months, Meta has embraced NFT collectibles from leading platforms like Ethereum, Polygon, and Flow, launching integrations with Facebook and Instagram that let users showcase their owned NFT assets to friends and followers. Will Meta also embrace the existing NFT ecosystem when it comes to building its metaverse platform?
Many Web3 builders have been skeptical.
Last year, Yat Siu of Animoca Brands—a leading metaverse investor—told Decrypt that tech giants like Facebook and Tencent are “a threat” to an open, interoperable metaverse, and others in the space have shared similar concerns.
Zuckerberg’s comments today don’t clearly indicate that Meta plans to build arm-in-arm with Web3 creators and completely embrace open-source tech, but it’s the strongest signal yet that the Facebook firm is attempting a major pivot in how it designs online platforms.
Meta’s latest moves
Elsewhere in the keynote address, Meta made a number of announcements that suggest ongoing progress towards bringing its metaverse vision to life on both the hardware and software fronts.
On the hardware front, Meta revealed the Quest Pro, a much more powerful standalone VR headset that’s targeted at business users and professionals. Unlike the current $400 Meta Quest 2 headset designed for consumers, the Meta Quest Pro will sell for $1,500 and pack considerably more graphical power to deliver robust VR experiences.

But it’s more than a VR-centric headset. The mixed reality device will also support augmented reality experiences, and can overlay digital content on a user’s view of the real world. It uses sharper external cameras to enable that feature, plus it integrates inward-facing sensors to recreate users’ facial expressions and allow for eye tracking functionality.
Meta’s play towards the metaverse is focused on more than just hardware, however: the firm is also developing the software and infrastructure to someday launch its planned unified online 3D platform designed for work, play, socializing, shopping, and more.
The firm’s current Horizon Worlds VR app will be expanded to the web, Meta announced today, with the ability for users to join via a computer or touch device. That may signal Meta’s plan to expand its current VR experience into a multi-platform world that could eventually transform into something matching the demo first shown last year.
Granted, that announcement comes following the publication of a report that suggests that Horizon Worlds has significant bugs and quality issues, and that Meta’s own employees rarely use the platform. There may be significant work ahead to not only improve the experience, but also make it compatible with other devices.
Meta is also working on more detailed avatars that can be used across its apps, including Horizon Worlds, Instagram, and WhatsApp. And in 2023, they’ll even gain legs. Currently, Meta’s Horizon Worlds avatars are simply floating torsos, but the firm is developing A.I. tech to generate digital legs based on predictive algorithms.
Additionally, Meta announced a major new partner in tech giant Microsoft, which will initially bear fruit in a couple of key ways.
Microsoft will bring immersive versions of Windows, Teams, Office, and Xbox Game Pass to the Quest VR platform, while Meta’s avatar system will be integrated into Teams. That kind of cross-compatibility could signal further metaverse moves to come. Meta previously showed how the metaverse could be used for collaborative remote work across virtual screens.
Despite pushback against its budding metaverse endeavors, it’s clear from today’s presentation that Meta isn’t backing down. And in an interview with The Verge, Mark Zuckerberg reiterated that it will be a deliberate investment and building process, describing it as a “long-term journey” and that it could take several years for the tech to mature.
In fact, Meta also teased some future technologies in the keynote that are intended for the metaverse, including photo-real 3D avatars built from smartphone scans, as well as interfaces and control systems built around subtle finger movements. Those features are still prototypes and may not ultimately be integrated into finished products.
Meta’s plan for the metaverse could still be years away from completion at scale, but today’s keynote provided some notable updates on the tech—and potentially changed the tone around the social media firm’s approach.
