U.S. Weighs Allowing Venezuelans To Apply For Special Humanitarian Entry -Sources – Reuters Canada https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-weighs-allowing-venezuelans-to-apply-for-special-humanitarian-entry-sources-reuters-canada/ WASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) – The Biden administration is considering allowing some Venezuelans seeking humanitarian entry into the United States to apply from Venezuela or a third country to reduce illegal border crossings, two U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials said on Tuesday. The program, if implemented, would resemble a similar effort announced in April to bring Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion of Ukraine into the United States. Venezuelans caught crossing the U.S.-Mexico border illegally in the past five years would not be eligible, the officials said, requesting anonymity to discuss internal matters. The White House and DHS declined to comment. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Republicans have spotlighted illegal immigration ahead of Nov. 8 midterm elections, arguing that U.S. President Joe Biden, a Democrat, is not doing enough to secure the border. There have been a record number of migrant arrests at the U.S.-Mexico border since Biden took office in 2021. The number of Venezuelans caught crossing the border illegally has spiked in the past year amid political turmoil and economic instability under President Nicolas Maduro. More than 150,000 Venezuelans were picked up at the U.S.-Mexico border between October 2021 and August 2022, according to U.S. government data. Many border crossers are expelled immediately to Mexico or their home countries under a pandemic-related order known as Title 42. But Venezuelans generally cannot be expelled, as Mexico will not accept them, and they are difficult to deport due to frosty diplomatic relations with their government. As a result, most migrants from Venezuela who cross into the United States are allowed to stay and pursue asylum claims, which can take years to resolve. Last month, Reuters reported that the Biden administration has quietly pressed Mexico to accept more migrants from Venezuela, as well as from Cuba and Nicaragua, under the COVID-19 expulsion order that the White House has publicly sought to end. read more Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Ted Hesson in Washington; Additional reporting by Matt Spetalnick; Editing by Kristina Cooke and Gerry Doyle Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

IndiGGs Ishank Gupta On How Web3.0-Based Gaming And Metaverse Apps To Earn Beyond Traditional Ways The Financial Express
IndiGG’s Ishank Gupta On How Web3.0-Based Gaming And Metaverse Apps To Earn Beyond Traditional Ways – The Financial Express https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/indiggs-ishank-gupta-on-how-web3-0-based-gaming-and-metaverse-apps-to-earn-beyond-traditional-ways-the-financial-express/ It is believed that additional Web3.0 features such as interoperability across different platforms, autonomy and ownership, will help drive adoption It seems that the popularity and profitability of play-to-earn (P2E) games have increased thanks to the rise in blockchain-backed applications. Experts believe that a platform will stand out by offering innovations to create revenue streams for gamers, and has the potential to bridge the gap between decentralised finance (DeFi) and non-fungible tokens (NFTs). A recent report from Newzoo, a gaming analytics website, highlighted that India is the second largest market for video games with over 373 million players. In a conversation with FE Blockchain Ishank Gupta, advisor, IndiGG, a gaming guild platform, talks about how a P2E gaming ecosystem can be formulated into a revenue model and the role of cryptocurrency. (Edited Excerpts)  How can P2E games replace the traditional job scenario?  I believe one of the key elements which has been unlocked by P2E games is the ability to create digital economies, for players to be able to make a living by playing a game. Web3.0-based gaming carries the potential to lay the foundation for a gaming experience where players own the items they earn and craft in-game, and can even trade or rent them to other players for a source of income. This allows players to be rewarded for their time spent in-game, and is expected to change the way the entire gameplay loop is perceived. Moreover, Web3.0-based gaming and metaverse applications have the capability to go beyond traditional earning ways by alternatives such as digital fashion, skins, organising virtual events, among others. Reportedly, video games now represent a $336 billion industry. What will be the implications of a P2E gaming revenue model in the long run?  Eventually, it is expected to change the way games are perceived when gamers realise the opportunities for ongoing revenue through daily activities. Not just games but other activities can be gamified and incentivised through cryptocurrency-based economic models such as move-and-earn applications as STEPN (GMT) and Sweat Economy (SWEAT), or watch-to-earn applications that reward users for their attention and participation. What are the factors expected to drive Web3.0-based gaming adoption?  While the play-and-earn revenue model is expected to bring its own benefits, the initial uptake of Web3.0-based gaming will be dependent on factors such as immersive gameplay, strong stories and characters, rewarding gameplay loops, among others. Additional Web3.0 features such as interoperability across different platforms, autonomy and ownership, will help drive adoption.  How is P2E gaming expected to benefit a developing market such as India?  I expect India to be considered as an emerging frontier for the gaming industry. According to a November 2021 report by Boston Consulting Group and Sequoia Capital India, monetisation of the Indian gaming market is in excess of $1.8 billion. Insights from VentureBeat, an American technology website, stated that 400 million people have already started to play online video games in the country and the industry is expected to triple in size by 2025. Handing people the means to generate income from everyday activities will help people raise their standard of living and create new business opportunities. Where do you see the prospect of Web3.0-based gaming adoption to reach by 2030? Estimates have predicted that the Web3.0 market could be worth $87 billion by 2030, at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 45.2%. It is likely that these estimates will be met or exceeded. Blockchain gaming and decentralisation can help improve efficiency through elimination of intermediaries, and help ensure channeling of control and ownership for people involved. For Web3.0-oriented gaming, mainstream gaming studios and developers have reportedly started to test out gaming-based blockchain functionalities.

Cybercrime Is The Biggest Threat Facing Corporate Australia Today – Tech Business News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/cybercrime-is-the-biggest-threat-facing-corporate-australia-today-tech-business-news/ Why latest guidelines spell danger for Australia’s Cybersecurity Cybercrime is the biggest threat facing corporate Australia today, costing the economy more than an estimated $3trillion. With the sophistication, agility, and frequency of attacks increasing (one every 8 minutes in Australia), it’s encouraging to see the federal government implementing new legislation in response. However, while the intention is to better protect Australia’s critical infrastructure, this new cybersecurity framework could do the opposite.  Originally designed in 2018 the reformed ‘Critical Infrastructure Protection Act 2022’ came into effect in July this year. With an improved framework for handling cyber threats, it includes an array of measures to which Australian businesses and services must adhere.  In theory, the new act is imperative for safeguarding a modern Australia. Its existence provides a benchmark for IT and OT professionals across a greater variety of industries, and ensures security is a collective responsibility.  The importance of addressing this responsibility cannot be overstated in an environment of increased cyber threats to essential services and businesses over the past few years – including federal parliamentary networks, the medical sector, universities, and key software businesses.   Take the most recent attack on Optus’ network as an example, which has seen millions of customers potentially affected, with full names, date of births and contact details stolen. While Optus was covered by insurance, it’s a reminder that sufficient scenario planning and risk mitigation is integral to preventing these increasingly sophisticated attacks. Potentially one of the largest attacks Australia has seen to date, it’s a warning to us all that cybersecurity has never been more critical.   The introduction of the new act then is a positive sign that Australia is taking cybersecurity threats more seriously. However, some of the amendments foreshadow an evolution of increasingly stringent rules that could become unrealistic and unachievable – ultimately threatening system effectiveness and integrity. One such update is the change to incident reporting deadlines. In line with the new law, organisations are now required to notify the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ASCS) within 12 hours of becoming aware of an incident. Failure to comply can result in fines starting at $11,000.   Not only could this have implications for smaller businesses, which often have fewer resources to identify and manage attacks on their assets, it detracts from what should be the priority of risk management. The standard 12-hour reporting deadline also doesn’t take into consideration the challenges and processes of different industries – finance vs the food sector, for example. The sophistication and complexity of cybercrimes mean that, in many instances, the time it takes to correctly identify an attack and potential solution is also difficult to predict. On a global scale, reporting time for incidents was previously around 72 hours, meaning deadlines have reduced from three days to one. The risk in this continued reduction of reporting times is that requirements may get so low – potentially to immediate notification or ‘zero hours’ – that it’s simply unsustainable. Organisations must have adequate time to identify a breach, investigate the incident and produce an accurate report without fear of potentially devastating legal, cost and brand ramifications. While the latest guidelines hint at a stricter framework in future, the current requirements are achievable for organisations that are prepared. For any organisation, whether 300 or 30,000, the key to effectively managing cyber-security is understanding responsibilities and having a clear plan.  To implement the most effective cybersecurity, you must first have visibility over all your systems. At Schneider, we work with businesses daily to understand their unique challenges and ensure open lines of communication. We also have dedicated cybersecurity leads to ensure clearly defined roles and responsibilities.  To practice what we preach, we upskill our people through mandatory annual cybersecurity certification, and we have a customer-facing Cybersecurity Virtual Academy, an online resource providing educational cybersecurity content, as well as opportunities to engage with industry experts through webinars and Q&As. We also partner with other leaders in the cybersecurity space to help our customers best leverage the investment they’ve made in their existing IT environment. Whether you’re a start-up, SME, or global enterprise, the new guidelines are an important reminder that investing in cybersecurity is not just the right thing to do, but critical for your business. [Photo by Brad Stone/www.bestone.shootproof.com] “Rough Rider Night” in Cashion proved to be rough going for Watonga. The Wildcats returned to district action last Friday with a 48-8 win over the visiting Eagles. The hosts were paying tribute to Roy Cashion, the town’s namesake, as he was one of the first to sign up for Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in the Spanish- American War. Killed during the charge on San Juan Hill, Cashion is believed to be the first Oklahoman to die in battle on foreign soil. Cashion wore special uniforms with “Rough Riders” emblazoned on both the jerseys and helmets. They scored early and often in them. The Wildcats led 41-0 at halftime as five different players scored the six touchdowns. Cooper Frazee got it going with a 21-yard score. Max Brown followed up with his first of three TDs on the night. Brown hauled in a 74yard touchdown pass from Chance Acord, his first of four TD’s on the night. Acord ended the first with a 20-yard scoring pass to Camden Maroney. Brown struck again in the second quarter when he scored on a 92-yard run. Acord threw his third touchdown by connecting with Seth Gilbert from 23 yards. Jackson Vandruff capped the half by picking off a pass and returning it 45 yards for a touchdown. Brown and Acord got together one last time with a 3-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Acord was 15 of 20 for 221 yards. The Wildcats added another 230 rushing yards. Frazee ran for 61 yards and Nathan Nabavi another 53. Brown’s big TD run helped him to 105 rushing yards on just two carries. That allowed him to pull the double-dip on passing the century mark in rushing and receiving. Brown’s four receptions led to 140 yards through the air. Jake Branson led the defense with 10 tackles. Brown and Timmy Jones had seven each. Cashion is now 3-3 on the season and 1-1 in District A-3. The Wildcats travel to play Christian Heritage Academy on Thursday. CHA just handed Minco its first loss of the year, 28-7. The Crusaders (5-2, 2-1) were earlier defeated by Crescent in district action.

Meet The Metaverse Creators: 3D Artist & Art Director Malloy NFT Plazas
Meet The Metaverse Creators: 3D Artist & Art Director Malloy NFT Plazas
Meet The Metaverse Creators: 3D Artist & Art Director Malloy – NFT Plazas https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/meet-the-metaverse-creators-3d-artist-art-director-malloy-nft-plazas/ The first time I heard about the creator Malloy was when I was digging in Decentraland data sheets. According to the stats, Malloy is one of the most successful creators in Decentraland, especially if we were to count how many items he has sold over his time here. All the people I talked to have recommended Malloy as someone who can do incredible things. He is a 3D artist and art director. He has worked in-house in the games industry during the new console gold rush frenzy (first games to market) and has been an outsource artist, indie game developer, and design consultant since then. I am talking to him today, not for the first time! Tell us a little about what has changed since you learned about the Metaverse and what you can do here. I entered the Metaverse space in March 2021 before the insanity of the “NFT Summer” was ramping up. The attraction was the concept of scarce digital assets that the artist could not only be a manufacturer but also a distributor and publisher. The evolution of that attraction is now how to embolden the value of the game asset regardless of the “hype” social factors that play into it. An asset should sell itself without the need of populism, and I don’t think NFTs in games have even scratched the surface of their potential. Creating digital fashion does sound like a challenge. So why did you choose Decentraland as a platform? I came across Decentraland a long while before I created my first asset and what drew me to it was the concept of the project and the ideology. You are one of the most successful creators in Decentraland. Please share your thoughts about it. Did you have a goal when you published your very first wearable? I find that statement a little jarring due to my work being mainly uncredited and for 3rd parties. Although I was only made aware of the numbers involved in the trading of my wearables recently, I am humbled. I think the most accomplished feeling I’ve had is making assets for myself, but the most joy I have had making wearables has been in collaboration with my business partner, Sam, making wearables enjoyed by many citizens of Decentraland over various events that have gone on over the last one and a half years.  Ironically my goal when I started out was to see if, as a 3D artist, it was possible to not be at the mercy of traditionally established dependencies (working for middlemen or studio producers). However, increasingly, we see the rise of the “metaverse consultant” charging ridiculous fees for their services and subcontracting to the real talent for peanuts. The long and short of it, my goal was to see if the technology/platform could be used to fight the swathe of abusive business practices conducted in established industries. It appears it can! But collectors should be vigilant in regards to whom they part with their hard-earned money. The profiteering middleman or the talent? Starting something on your own can be overwhelming. What would you advise for someone who is still in doubt? Share your “work in progress” with the community. It reveals the authenticity of you as an artist and establishes rapport. It is what I did, and I was approached by multiple people (including the Foundation, of whom I am very grateful for subcontracting myself and Sam to create wearables for their outstanding events!). You never know who is looking in Discord or on Twitter, don’t be afraid of people stealing your ideas at the expense of people not knowing your worth as an artist. Do you remember your very first Decentraland experience? Can you tell us a little bit about it? I think it was like for many others, Wonderzone & Tominoya Casino, haha, but I then went to Discord and found super cool scenes like the Puzzle Museum, etc. I know that the community in Decentraland is very strong. Have you ever met any of them IRL, and how do you feel about your anonymity in the space? I am pretty open. I think anonymity helps to feel a sense of protection from abusers. For others, it serves as a protection to abuse others. So I figure I’d rather be transparent as I have no intention to abuse anyone, but I respect others’ needs for privacy. I have had the joy of meeting many DCL citizens in person at the NFTxROADS event in Valencia. I can’t wait to meet up with people again and chat about nerdy/art stuff! What is your inspiration, and how do you manage your creative process? My creative process is often at the mercy of my ambition. Luckily I have a great business partner who keeps me anchored. I am inspired by many things, including the historical repertoire of game art styles, but mainly I am inspired to push boundaries, not just be the first to execute something like a silly badge of honor to gloat about, but something that utilizes NFTs to give power to the collector other than to just sell it. Digital fashion inspires me in that capacity, also. If you could say just one thing about what is the key to digital creativity? What would it be? Think about the technology and how it can be utilized in new dynamics and not in a gimmicky way to make quick cash. But a way that digital assets can be enjoyed by people in a way where their purchases aren’t just a weak excuse for wealth extraction. How do you see the future of digital wearables? I believe in the future. Maybe this is naïve and even a little pessimistic, but people will prefer to tune into the digital worlds over the real one (it’s already been happening for the last 20 years), but with digital asset scarcity and certificate of ownership, digital wearables will be highly coveted items that not only give people a sense of identity and social status but also affect their experience within these digital worlds. The expanse of experience is highly desirable in any circumstance. It’s why folks enjoy roller coasters or partake in various mind-altering state drugs. Decentraland is ahead of the curve on this by means of decentralized application of utility to digital wearables. Newer flashy projects with stock assets will crop up, but the infrastructure of Decentraland takes time and an organic democratic process that other projects haven’t even started to conceive. Most other “metaverses” are still trying to monopolize at the expense of the digital wearable buyer to appease VC expectations. How do you see the future of the Metaverse(s)? I see the future of Metaverses being like a street of 100 coffee shops. People will try each of them out now and again but will ultimately stick to their favorite one until it goes out of business. Then move on to the next. The real question will be, can they redeem the loyalty card they’ve fully stamped in the previous shop, and who funds these franchises? Does the retail user’s money go back into an ecosystem that serves them (in this hilarious parallel, the coffee bean growers?) and the project or increasingly pays out to a series of individuals who happened to be early (investors at the expense of every worker in the hierarchy)? Go decentralized and fight for it 3 Listen to the Twitter Spaces talk with Lina and Malloy Here Want more? Metas Headset Makeover Yields A $1500 Toy In Search Of A Purpose KAKE
Metas Headset Makeover Yields A $1500 Toy In Search Of A Purpose KAKE
Meta’s Headset Makeover Yields A $1500 Toy In Search Of A Purpose – KAKE https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/metas-headset-makeover-yields-a-1500-toy-in-search-of-a-purpose-kake/ Analysis by Allison Morrow, CNN Business It’s easy to feel down about the state of the world, what with that looming global recession, the pandemic, those people who insist they unironically love candy corn … and so on. All of that is enough to make anyone curious about this metaverse thing Mark Zuckerberg keeps touting as the future of the internet. This is the digital destination where Zuck expects us to spend more and more of our time — at work, but not really, or hanging out with avatar friends at not-real coffee shops. He’s so convinced of this future that last year he renamed Facebook, the company he founded, to Meta, and is plowing billions of dollars into building the hardware that will transport us there. On Tuesday, Meta unveiled its latest effort in that mission, the Meta Quest Pro headset. As my colleague Rachel Metz reports, this thing is slick, powerful, and much improved from earlier iterations. And still super impractical. In short: It’s a cool gadget in search of an audience. It can display text and fine details in VR, making it possible to read even small type with ease. It can track your eyes and facial features, giving you a sense of connection with other people in virtual spaces: If you arch your eyebrows or they puff up their cheeks in real life, so too will the VR avatars. And it can be used as a mixed-reality headset, showing you a view of the world around you in color while letting you interact with digital objects — whether you’re painting on an ersatz easel or putting on a faux mini-golf course. But it costs $1,500 — nearly four times that of the company’s cheapest Quest 2 headset. That might be OK for deep-pocketed professionals like architects and designers, or perhaps for the well-to-do VR faithful who are emotionally invested in the metaverse idea. But for normies, that’s a lot of dough. Too much, you might say, in an economy that’s hobbled by high prices and potentially tumbling into a recession. For that price, you could buy two Xbox Series X gaming consoles and still have money left over for brunch. You could buy a top-of-the-line iPhone and a flight to Denver. Heck, you could skip the gadgets, book a flight to Italy and sip some very real, delicious wine food for a few days all for the price of a single Quest Pro, which promises… I dunno, some nice graphics? Time will tell: Customers can pre-order the headset starting today and it’ll ship later this month. As Rachel notes, the Quest Pro may not be the Tickle Me Elmo of the 2022 holiday season (Gen Zers, you can ask your parents about that one). But its improved design is a milestone for Zuck and his Meta dream, which cost the company $2.8 billion in losses the second quarter alone. The lenses are thinner, the headset itself less front-heavy than earlier iterations, and it reportedly does a better job blending the real and virtual spaces around the user. Which all sounds like a step in the right direction, if you’re someone who believes the right direction is ultimately one in which our lives eventually revolve even more than they do now around being digitally connected to one another. Lyft shares tumbled 12% while Uber’s sank 10% after the Biden administration announced a new proposed labor rule that could reclassify gig workers — the bulk of those companies’ drivers — as employees. Such a change, which the rideshare companies have fought in the past, could entitle millions of gig workers across industries to benefits such as minimum wage and overtime pay. A constant theme of the 2020s so far is that nothing is quite as expected. Not our politics, not our grasp of Covid-19, and, perhaps more than anything else, you can pretty much throw out what you thought you knew about the US labor market. See here: The pandemic’s upheaval of global supply chains pushed manufacturers at home to ramp up production as it got harder and harder (and took longer and longer) to move goods around the globe. Suddenly the domestic producer that used to cost more made a lot more sense than the cheaper one overseas. The upshot is that US factories are suddenly humming, my colleagues Chris Isidore and Christine Romans report. Last week, the September jobs report showed US manufacturers added another 22,000 workers. And right now, the nearly 13 million people employed in American factories make up the industry’s largest workforce since the Great Recession that began in 2007. It’s not all good news (because, honestly, what is these days?). The problem now is finding enough skilled workers to keep up. And it’s not just a problem of pay. Wages are up an estimated 5% this year in manufacturing — that’s not keeping up with inflation, but it is in line with the national average. Factory jobs also tend to pay more than other private sector jobs overall — about $65,000 annually, according to the Labor Department. For one, you can’t just let factories decline for years and then expect them to snap back to peak production with the flip of a switch. “I think we’re in uncharted territory,” said Jay Timmons, CEO of the National Association of Manufacturers. “For every 100 jobs openings in the sector we only have 60 people who are looking. I think it’ll take quite a while to fill that pipeline.” Then there’s the perception problem: Factory life conjures images of an industry in decline, as it was for so long between 2007 and 2020. That’s a tough reputation to reform. “We often take a look at the images of manufacturing and we see the sparks flying … and perhaps it’s a little bit dingy, dark,” says Eric Esoda, CEO of a not-for-profit manufacturing consultancy. “But by and large our manufacturing jobs today are high tech.” Bottom line: The labor story in America remains one where the narrative of recent history doesn’t quite hold. In most downturns, we’ve seen manufacturing decline, giving it a bad rap as a job that’s going extinct. Factories aren’t alone. And managers are going to have to figure out the right combination of pay (humble suggestion: raise it), benefits and growth potential if they want to attract any of the millions of people (especially women) who are opting out of the labor force completely. You Can Now Google The Balances Of Ethereum Addresses – Decrypt https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/you-can-now-google-the-balances-of-ethereum-addresses-decrypt/ Google is now providing data on Ethereum addresses via its search engine. The world’s biggest website now tells you how much ETH some wallets hold when you punch an Etheruem address into the search bar.  The new feature works via block explorer Etherscan, a website that provides data on the Ethereum blockchain.  Crypto investor at Google Ventures Han Hua tweeted about the feature Tuesday. But when Decrypt tried it with several addresses, some worked and others didn’t, which could mean that Google is rolling out the feature incrementally.  Ethereum is the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap after Bitcoin. Its blockchain is used to build popular apps that are decentralized (known as dapps). It plays host to billions of dollars worth of DeFi and NFT trading activity. Ethereum addresses are public and anyone can find out, with the right tools, how much ETH a wallet holds, what transactions it has made, and what applications its owner has interacted with on the network. It’s the kind of data that can be very valuable to traders and analysts, and companies like Nansen have built businesses around making such data more easily accessible. Google is becoming more crypto-focused: as first reported today by CNBC, the internet giant said that it would start using Coinbase to accept cryptocurrencies Bitcoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin to make payments for cloud services early next year.  And last month, Google’s Web3 and Cloud head of strategy Richard Widmann told Decrypt that the company was working to grow its Web3 features. This suggests that Google, arguably one of the most important tech companies in the world, has its eyes firmly set on what is believed to be the next interaction of the internet which relies heavily on blockchains to function.  Stay on top of crypto news, get daily updates in your inbox.

Factbox: Support For Taiwan Included In Massive U.S. Defense Bill – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/factbox-support-for-taiwan-included-in-massive-u-s-defense-bill-reuters/ A helicopter carrying Taiwan’s flag flies by Taipei during the National Day celebrations in front of the Presidential Office in Taipei, Taiwan October 10, 2022. REUTERS/Ann Wang WASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) – The United States could soon offer billions of dollars in military financing for Taiwan, fast-track weapons sales and increase military coordination, as China exerts pressure on the democratically governed island. The Senate included much of the expansive “Taiwan Policy Act of 2022” in the $817 billion National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA, on which debate began on Tuesday. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the Taiwan legislation in September, sparking anger from Beijing. China considers Taiwan to be its territory and has never Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com renounced using force to bring it under its control. It was not immediately clear which Taiwan provisions would make it into the final version of the NDAA, but senators and Senate aides said many would become law if the NDAA is passed as expected this year. Here are some highlights: TAIWAN MILITARY FUNDING The Taiwan bill includes $6.5 billion in grant assistance over five years to bolster Taiwan’s military capabilities, and authorizes up to $2 billion in loans. The grants would be contingent on Taiwan increasing its own defense spending, and could give Washington extra sway in Taiwan’s defense procurement given U.S. military planners’ desire to see the island prioritize mobile equipment that could better survive a Chinese assault than large-scale systems. The bill also takes steps to track and expedite delivery of military equipment to Taiwan. TRAINING AND STOCKPILES It requires the State Department and Pentagon to expand joint military training in order to improve the island’s defenses and increase interoperability with U.S. forces. Defense analysts say increasing the two militaries’ ability to operate together would be critical in responding to any Chinese attack should the United States choose to do so, as President Joe Biden recently suggested. POSSIBLE SANCTIONS AGAINST CHINA The bill lays out specific sanctions for the president to impose in the event of “significant escalation in aggression” against Taiwan by China, language intended to increase U.S. deterrence. That would include sanctions against high-ranking Chinese Communist party members, government officials and agencies, as well as state-owned and controlled banks. Other sanctions would block and prohibit property-related transactions in the United States and bar those targeted from obtaining visas to enter the country. CONTROVERSIAL PROPOSALS Some elements of the Taiwan measure have raised concerns about increased tensions with China at the State Department and White House. Congressional aides said these are unlikely to make it into the NDAA. For example, the bill calls for Taiwan to be treated as a “major non-NATO ally” to facilitate the transfer of defense materials and services. And it would require Washington to assess renaming its de facto U.S. embassy from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office to the Taiwan Representative Office. Critics say that change would be largely cosmetic and sure to antagonize Beijing while not materially aiding Taiwan. Gaming CEOs Celebrate Las Vegas Success Wary Of Future Issues Las Vegas Review-Journal
Gaming CEOs Celebrate Las Vegas Success, Wary Of Future Issues – Las Vegas Review-Journal https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/gaming-ceos-celebrate-las-vegas-success-wary-of-future-issues-las-vegas-review-journal/ Two prominent casino company CEOs said Tuesday they’re happy that Southern Nevada is pacing a record industry rebound, but they remain wary of economic uncertainties that could put a dent in the future. Derek Stevens, owner of downtown Las Vegas’ Circa, and Craig Billings, the newest person to hold the position of CEO of Wynn Resorts Ltd., kicked off main events for the four-day Global Gaming Expo at The Venetian. Stevens and Billings were among six CEOs interviewed onstage by CNBC anchor Contessa Brewer. They followed a quick state-of-the-industry address by American Gaming Association President and CEO Bill Miller that celebrated two years of growth that outshined issues on the horizon. Billings, who succeeded Matt Maddox as Wynn CEO nearly nine months ago, said he’s been delighted with Las Vegas results, even as the tourism economy isn’t fully recovered. “Vegas has been a tremendous story,” Billings said. “The town does very, very well in finding additional sources of demand. We’ve had record ADRs (average daily room rates), excellent occupancy, our food and beverage, our theater … everything’s firing on multiple cylinders.” But he admitted the company’s Macao operations have been a huge disappointment as the company prepares for the renewal of its licensing later this year. Stevens indicated he wasn’t sure Circa, which opened in 2020, could be built today under existing economic conditions. “You’d have to be more conservative today than three years ago (when construction was underway),” Stevens said. “The market is tight and labor is affecting food and beverage operations. Some restaurant have to go to five-day or six-day (operations) or just a dinner operation because labor has been an issue since 2019. And anyone who says inflation is transitory, I don’t believe that to be the case. There’s going to be some built-in inflation that’s going to last for quite a little while.” Stevens and Billings believe safety, cybersecurity and water resources are the biggest issues facing Southern Nevada. “Safety is a societal issue and Las Vegas is not immune to societal issues,” Billings said. “But between our surveillance infrastructure and Metro (police), it’s hard to find a safer location than the Strip.” Miller, in his industry address, listed other concerns the gaming industry must be wary of that will be the focus of AGA attention in the months ahead. Miller said the biggest issue facing the industry is the illegal operation of unlicensed websites and gaming machines. “Our industry’s future depends on tackling our biggest threat — the illegal and unregulated market. Illegal and unregulated websites and machines pose a direct threat to our industry’s hard-earned regulatory licensed operators,” he said. “They prey on customers, especially the vulnerable and the underaged. They don’t provide any consumer protections or invest a dime in responsible gaming.” Miller said $300 billion is illegally bet annually, resulting in a loss of $15 billion to legal operators and a $4 billion loss in gaming taxes. Miller also encouraged the industry to embrace the digital future and to focus more attention on responsible gaming. “Online gaming, whether it’s sports betting or iGaming, is our fastest-growing segment,” he said. “Payment modernization is well underway and new technologies continue to emerge. The truth is, oftentimes they raise more questions than answers, but that has never stopped this industry before.” He said the AGA would continue to meet regularly with advocates, researchers, regulators and industry leaders to “explore wide-ranging question, including how we should modernize responsible gaming for today’s market.” Contact Richard N. There Are Almost No Homes Available For $500000 Or Less In Vail Valley Real Estate Market – Vail Daily https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/there-are-almost-no-homes-available-for-500000-or-less-in-vail-valley-real-estate-market-vail-daily/ Homes priced at $500,000 or less have virutally disappeared from the local market. Tierra Mallorca/Unsplash.com The lower and upper reaches of Eagle County’s real estate market don’t seem to share much. But this year, there are nearly as many sales of $5 million or more as there are sales of $500,000 or less. Through the end of August, there were 78 transactions of $500,000 or less compared with 68 sales of $5 million or more. Sales of $500,000 or less as recently as 2017 were the largest single segment of sales. People in the local real estate business say the lack of lower-priced sales comes down to a combination of rising prices, low inventory and increasing construction costs. Steffen Mehnert, the Vail Valley team leader for Keller Williams Realty, noted that homes at Gypsum’s Siena Lake project were first projected to start below about $500,000. Those homes — set for occupancy in May of 2023 — are now starting at $575,000 and up. Alex Griffin is the vice president and managing broker of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty’s Vail Valley branch. Griffin said the lack of lower-priced units is “unfortunate for people trying to buy (their first) homes.” Griffin noted that activity in Eagle has slowed significantly over the past several months. That slowdown has also spurred some declines in asking prices. Craig Denton of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Colorado Properties said he’s seeing price reductions in between 6 and 10 units every day. Those prices are still higher than those seen in 2019. Mehnert added that brokers are again hosting open houses at homes up and down the valley. “There’s a real disconnect between buyers and sellers right now,” Mehnert said, with buyers waiting for prices to come down, while sellers are hoping prices stay where they are. Beyond rising prices, interest rates also play a role in what people can buy. Mehnert noted that a consumer’s buying power declines 11% for every 1% rise in interest rates. “In Eagle, what (buyers) could afford at the start of the year … has probably changed,” Griffin said. All those factors are moving some potential buyers and sellers to the sidelines of the market. Griffin said people already in homes, many of whom are locked into interest rates in the 3% range, are looking at rates in the 6% range and the numbers don’t make sense. A number of people, Griffin said, are saying to themselves “why would I sell if I don’t have to.” In response to the changing market, real estate and mortgage brokers are getting more creative with financing. Adjustable rate morgages and other financing tactics are making something of a comeback. “The market has changed,” Denton said. “Time will tell where we’re going.” But even with those changes, Denton said there are still buyers looking to buy homes. “People still want to come to the resorts,” he said.

Cruise Vancouver: Sail Roundtrip To Hawaii At A Steal – Vancouver Is Awesome https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/cruise-vancouver-sail-roundtrip-to-hawaii-at-a-steal-vancouver-is-awesome/ This sailing includes all of your drinks, meals, entertainment, and transportation on a luxury ship. Best of all, you never have to take a flight as the cruise sails you there and back. Vancouverites looking to visit the Hawaiian Islands this year can enjoy a two-week vacation at a steal — but most of it won’t be on land.  Princess Cruises is currently offering a round-trip sailing out of Vancouver to Hawaii that allows locals to travel to the tropical destination without spending big bucks on hotel fees or flights. While hotels and resorts on any of the islands cost hundreds of dollars each night for accommodation alone, the cruise works out to just over $150 CAD per day and includes all of your meals, transportation, and entertainment, too.  The 15-day Hawaiian Islands cruise departs the Canada Place terminal on Oct. 18 and spends five days at sea before visiting its first port of call, Honolulu, Oahu, on Oct. 24. The following day, guests will visit Kahului, Maui. After that, the cruise stops in Hilo, Hawaii on Oct. 26 and makes its final stop in Kona, Hawaii on Oct. 26. Guests spend five more days on the lavish vessel before disembarking in Vancouver on Nov. 2.  Date Port Arrive Depart Tuesday, October 18 Vancouver, B.C., Canada   4:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 19 At Sea     Thursday, October 20 At Sea     Friday, October 21 At Sea     Saturday, October 22 At Sea     Sunday, October 23 At Sea     Monday, October 24 Honolulu, Oahu, HI 7:00 a.m. 11:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 25 Kahului, Maui, HI 8:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 26 Hilo, Hawaii, HI 8:00 a.m. 5:00 p.m. Thursday, October 27 Kona, Hawaii, HI 7:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m. Friday, October 28 At Sea     Saturday, October 29 At Sea     Sunday, October 30 At Sea     Monday, October 31 At Sea     Tuesday, November 1 At Sea     Wednesday, November 2 Vancouver, B.C., Canada 7:30 a.m.   Cruise from Vancouver with Princess Cruises to Hawaii The total for two guests in an interior stateroom works out to $5,046.30 CAD including all taxes and fees, which works out to $2,523.15 CAD per person. Since the cruise is 15 days long, this works out to a per diem cost of $168.21 CAD. Not only does that cost include your transportation on a beautiful five-star vessel, but it also includes meals, entertainment, snacks, and lodging. The only thing it doesn’t factor in is alcohol, but you may opt to purchase a drink package that can reduce the cost of your spending. The cruise ship is the five-star Crown Princess, which offers four swimming pools, seven hot tubs, a live theatre, tennis, mini-golf, renowned spa treatments, movies under the stars, a jogging track, a video arcade, and much more.  Photo via Princess Cruises Book your cruise with Princess Cruises online.  Early this year, I sailed on another cruise line’s first voyage to Vancouver since the onset of the pandemic. Read my experience sailing from San Diego in April.

MyMichigan Health Adds To Sports Medicine Team – Radioresultsnetwork.com https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/mymichigan-health-adds-to-sports-medicine-team-radioresultsnetwork-com/ As part of MyMichigan Health’s ongoing commitment to bringing comprehensive sports medicine care to athletes of all ages and levels of competition, MyMichigan recently expanded its experienced sports medicine team to include fellowship-trained Primary Care Sports Medicine Specialist Richard Giannotti, Jr., D.O., and Sports Medicine Orthopedic Surgeon Teresa Hall, D.O. With this team expansion, additional sports medicine coverage is being offered at MyMichigan Medical Centers in Alma, Clare and Mt. Pleasant. MyMichigan also offers comprehensive sports medicine care services in both Bay City and Midland. As sports medicine specialists, Drs. Giannotti and Hall are dedicated to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of injuries, disorders and diseases of the musculoskeletal system. They enjoy collaborating to help people attain their goals, whether that’s returning to sports or exercise after an injury, reaching the next level of athletic performance, or simply living life as pain-free as possible. Dr. Giannotti completed his medical degree from Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Indianapolis.  He went on to complete his residency in family medicine at Munson Medical Center and a fellowship in primary care sports medicine at Auburn University. Dr. Giannotti’s philosophy of care in sports medicine can be traced back to his father and his godfather. “From a young age, my father instilled in me the importance of practicing what you preach,” he said. “With that in mind, I strive to always live out the counsel and advice I give patients, which is to lead an active and healthy lifestyle rooted in physical activity, nutrition, and proper recovery and rehabilitation. “From childhood, my godfather would recite the parable of “The Lion and Gazelle,” which ends with – it doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or gazelle when the sun comes up you’d better be running. My goal is to do everything I can to ensure patients can “wake up running,” which to me is participating in physical activities that bring joy, happiness and health to their lives.” Dr. Hall completed her medical degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She went on to complete her residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Michigan Health-West and a fellowship in orthopedic surgery sports medicine from the State University of New York at Buffalo, also known as the University at Buffalo. Dr. Hall’s philosophy of care is to listen closely to her patients to understand what is afflicting them and to create relationships built on mutual trust. “I take time to understand my patients’ goals of treatment and plans for the future and then customize a treatment plan based on their individual wants and needs,” she said.  According to Dr. Hall, the most satisfying part of her job is using her hands to diagnose and treat patients and then helping them get back to their desired activity, at any level. “I really enjoy working with athletes through high school and following their career into collegiate sports,” she added. “I’ve worked with professional athletes in football, hockey and lacrosse, as well as NCAA division 1 athletes.” In addition to treating recreational athletes of all ages, MyMichigan Health currently has sports medicine collaborations with Central Michigan University Athletics, Alma College, Northwood University, Mid Michigan College, the Great Lakes Loons, as well as more than 13 local high school athletic programs. MyMichigan also assists with sports medicine coverage during the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational, the Dow Tennis Classic, many and other local events. It also boasts WellSport, the area’s only primary care sports medicine program. Those who would like additional information about Drs. Giannotti and Hall or MyMichigan’s comprehensive musculoskeletal services may visit www.mymichigan.org/msk.

Tyler Skaggs Death: Eric Kay Sentenced To 22 Years In Prison USA TODAY
Tyler Skaggs Death: Eric Kay Sentenced To 22 Years In Prison USA TODAY
Tyler Skaggs’ Death: Eric Kay Sentenced To 22 Years In Prison – USA TODAY https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/tyler-skaggs-death-eric-kay-sentenced-to-22-years-in-prison-usa-today/ A Texas judge sentenced former Los Angeles Angels director of communications Eric Kay to 22 years in federal prison Tuesday in connection with the 2019 death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs. Kay, 48, was facing a minimum sentence of 20 years after being convicted earlier this year of distributing the fentanyl-laced opioids that resulted in Skaggs’ overdose. He received two additional years of prison time after prosecutors revealed disparaging comments Kay made about Skaggs in recent months while awaiting sentencing. “I hope people realize what a piece of (expletive) he is,” Kay told his mother in a recorded call from prison that prosecutors submitted as evidence Tuesday. “Well, he’s dead, so (expletive) him.” Kay also described Skaggs’ family as “white trash” and suggested that “all they see are dollar signs” in the wake of the pitcher’s death. (The Skaggs family sued Kay and the Angeles for negligence in 2021.) “They may get more money with him dead than he was playing, because he sucked,” Kay said. According to multiple news reports, the judge in the case, Terry Means, said during Tuesday’s sentencing hearing that Kay’s vulgar comments contributed to his decision to levy a 22-year sentence as opposed to the 20-year minimum. The Los Angeles Times reported that Kay apologized in court for the remarks, chalking them up to “frustration” and “vitriol.” He later called Skaggs “a sweetheart,” according to the newspaper. “Mr. Kay will immediately file his notice of appeal and continue to fight the allegations,” Kay’s lawyer, Cody Cofer, wrote in an email. Skaggs, 27, was found dead on his bed in a Texas hotel room on July 1, 2019, a few hours before the Angels were set to play a game against the Texas Rangers. A toxicology report later revealed that he had both fentanyl and oxycodone in his system at the time of his death, which was ruled an accident. Kay initially denied knowing that Skaggs used opioids, but investigators later obtained text messages between the two men about apparent transactions involving “blue boys” – blue oxycodone pills that were later found to be laced with fentanyl. According to evidence submitted by prosecutors, Skaggs asked Kay to deliver pills to his hotel room on the night of his death. “Hoe [sic] many?” Kay asked Skaggs in one text message. “Just a few like 5,” the pitcher replied. Multiple former Angels players – including Matt Harvey and C.J. Cron – testified at Kay’s trial in February that the former team communications director had also provided them with pills, including at Angel Stadium.  A jury convicted Kay after less than 90 minutes of deliberations. He has since been incarcerated at a federal prison in Fort Worth, Texas. U.S. Attorney Chad E. Meacham, whose office prosecuted the case, said in a statement Tuesday that he hopes Kay’s sentence “will bring some comfort to (Skaggs’) grieving family.” “The Skaggs family learned the hard way: One fentanyl pill can kill,” Meacham said. “That’s why our office is committed to holding to account anyone who deals in illicit opioids, whether they operate in back alleyways or world class stadiums.” Contact Tom Schad at tschad@usatoday.com or on Twitter @Tom_Schad.

Unlike the previous generation, it sports a 1080p display and 3GB of RAM, which is plenty if you’re streaming, browsing, or consuming Amazon content. Of all the budget-friendly tablets in Amazon’s current Fire lineup, the Fire HD 10 is the one we typically recommend, thanks to its sharp 1080p display and relatively good performance. You can currently buy it with ads and 32GB of storage for $74.99 at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target, a 50 percent discount. Read our review. You can also buy the ad-supported, 32GB Fire HD 10 Plus — which features support for wireless charging and more RAM than the base model — for $104.99 ($75 off) at Amazon, Best Buy, and Target. U.S. Economy Is ‘doing Well’ Amid Global Economic Uncertainty, Says Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen – CNBC https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-economy-is-doing-well-amid-global-economic-uncertainty-says-treasury-secretary-janet-yellen-cnbc/ US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen during an armchair discussion at the Rotman School of Management in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on Monday, June 20, 2022. Cole Burston | Bloomberg | Getty Images Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Tuesday that the U.S. economy was “doing very well” as rising energy prices, Covid-19 variants and Russia’s war with Ukraine have caught global markets in a vice grip. “From the perspective of the United States, I think the United States is doing very well,” Yellen told CNBC’s Sara Eisen Tuesday. The Treasury Secretary is meeting with world finance leaders at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank’s annual meetings this week in Washington, D.C. She said the economy was expected to slow after a very strong recovery, but a recent jobs report released last week revealed a “very resilient” economy. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday that nonfarm payrolls increased 263,000 in September, while the unemployment rate fell to 3.5%, tied for the lowest level since late 1969. Consumers, however, have been somewhat constrained by prices rising at close to their fastest pace in more than 40 years. The latest New York Fed Survey of Consumer Expectations shows that consumers expect the inflation rate a year from now to be 5.4%, the lowest number in a year and a decline from 5.75% in August. That level peaked at 6.8% in June and has been coming down since then, as the central bank has instituted a series of rate hikes totaling 3 percentage points. Markets largely expect the Fed to continue raising rates until it brings inflation down to its long-run target of 2%. Yellen acknowledged that inflation is too high and that lowering it is a priority for the Biden administration. But she said there is a way to do that while maintaining a healthy labor market. “Firms, even with rising interest rates, have debt burdens that are by and large manageable,” Yellen said. She added that U.S. financial markets continue to function well and the Treasury is not seeing signs of deleveraging that generally happens in an environment of tighter monetary policy. Yellen also said the OPEC+ decision to reduce oil output and Russia’s continued war against Ukraine have also affected liquidity in the markets, but there are no signs that merit serious concern. Worries about the strength of the U.S. dollar are also a natural result of different paces of monetary tightening in the U.S. and other countries, she said. “The dollar is a safe haven, so when times are uncertain, we experience capital inflows into our safe markets,” Yellen said. “And all of those things are pushing up the dollar vis a vis a broad range of countries.” — CNBC’s Jeff Cox contributed to this report.

Intel Plans To Cut Thousands Of Jobs In Face Of PC Slowdown – Bloomberg News – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/intel-plans-to-cut-thousands-of-jobs-in-face-of-pc-slowdown-bloomberg-news-reuters/ Oct 11 (Reuters) – Chipmaker Intel Corp (INTC.O) is planning a major reduction in headcount, likely numbering in the thousands, in the face of a slowdown in the personal computer market, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing people with knowledge of the situation. The layoffs will be announced as early as this month and some of Intel’s divisions, including the sales and marketing group, could see cuts affecting about 20% of staff, according to the report. The company had 113,700 employees as of July, Bloomberg News said. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Intel declined to comment on the job cuts. The company in July slashed its annual sales and profit forecasts after missing estimates for second-quarter results. Decades-high inflation and the reopening of offices and schools have led people to spend less on PCs than they did during pandemic-related lockdowns. Chipmakers are also under pressure from COVID-19 curbs in key PC market China and the Ukraine conflict that have led to supply-chain snarls and also weighed on demand. Intel’s Chief Executive Officer Pat Gelsinger released a memo to company employees on Tuesday outlining plans to create an internal foundry model for external customers and the company’s product lines. A foundry business builds chips that other companies design and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (2330.TW) is the top player in that space. Intel has mainly built chips it designed itself so far. read more Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by Yuvraj Malik and Abinaya Vijayaraghavan in Bengaluru; Editing by Shounak Dasgupta Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

Read our editorial policy. An incredibly low price for a monitor of this quality, ideal for responsive 1080p gaming. Gaming monitors don’t have to be expensive. Right now you can pick up Dell’s excellent G2722HS 27-in 1080p 165Hz monitor for just £129 after a massive £110 discount, courtesy of a HUKD discount code. That code is HUKDG2722HS, so just enter it at the checkout to get this monitor for an unbelievable price. Get the Dell G2722HS 1080p 165Hz monitor for £129 w/ code HUKDG2722HS It’s incredibly rare to see a 27-inch 1080p 165Hz monitor for this price, much less one from Dell who is one of the best monitor brands going. Looking online, you can find a few smaller 24-inch monitors for around the same price, but only if you go for a no-name brand – and Dell’s 24-in equivalent costs £160 even after a Prime Early Access Sale discount. This monitor also supports G-Sync and FreeSync Premium, so you have an option to eliminate screen tearing and judder without the input lag penalty of traditional v-sync – a must-have for any new monitor purchase, I think. The 1080p resolution will look a little grainy at 27 inches, but having used a 28-inch 1080p monitor for years, it’s certainly preferable to a 24-inch model at the same resolution. And that 165Hz refresh rate is an absolute game-changer, allowing you to run esports titles like Counter-Strike, DotA 2 or Rocket League with extremely good responsiveness even on lower-end machines. The G2722HS uses an IPS panel too, which is less common for budget monitors than the older and cheaper TN. The advantage of IPS is that you get much better viewing angles and colour reproduction, so watching videos, working and playing slower-paced games will look significantly better than on an equally priced TN panel display. The only advantage TN holds is in pixel response times, but in my view good modern IPS panels like this are more than fast enough for 165Hz gaming – and I’d much rather have a screen that is good across a wide range of game genres. In any case, this is an awesome deal – so thanks for HUKD for arranging it with Dell, and I hope you find it useful! Stay tuned for more deals soon.

Paetow Football Coach Resigns Amid Police Investigation – Houston Chronicle https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/paetow-football-coach-resigns-amid-police-investigation-houston-chronicle/ Oct. 11, 2022Updated: Oct. 11, 2022 5:12 p.m. Lonnie Teagle is out as the Paetow head football coach. Eric Christian Smith/Contributor Paetow head football coach and campus athletic coordinator Lonnie Teagle has resigned from his position after an allegation of inappropriate conduct with a student.  Katy ISD Police Chief Henry Gaw confirmed Tuesday that there is an active investigation into Teagle’s alleged misconduct.  Katy ISD released the following statement regarding the matter. “The Katy ISD Police has investigated an allegation concerning a former head football coach. The individual resigned during the inquiry and the case has since been referred to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The safety of Katy ISD students and staff is the District’s top priority. Whenever the District is made aware of an allegation, the accused is immediately removed from their District assignment(s), while District personnel work swiftly with law enforcement and other agencies to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.” Teagle’s Twitter account has been deleted. Teagle has also been removed from the school’s directory, and David Hicks Sr. is now listed as the interim head coach. Hicks joined Teagle’s staff at Paetow after coaching at Allen last year. Paetow made the jump to Class 6A this season after winning the 5A Division I state championship last December under former coach B.J. Gotte. Gotte took the same role at Pearland, prompting the district to hire Teagle as his replacement. Paetow is 3-3 overall this season, including a 2-2 mark in District 19-6A action. The Panthers have struggled the past two games, however, losing in blowout fashion against fellow 6A newcomer Jordan and No. 5 state-ranked Katy. Paetow offensive coordinator Trey Payne stated on Twitter Tuesday afternoon that he has resigned from his post as well, although he said his departure was “completely separate” from Teagle’s, and that he made his choice for family reasons. Teagle, a Missouri City native and Elkins graduate, spent three years on the coaching staff at Denton Ryan, starting as the running backs coach in 2019 before a promotion to offensive coordinator in 2020. The Raiders were a remarkable 42-3, including a 2020 state title, and averaged 43.5 points per game with Teagle on staff. Teagle earned his bachelor’s degree in recreation from Alcorn State University and his master’s degree in teaching from Texas Woman’s University. He joined Denton ISD as a teacher and coach in 2006. This story will be updated as more information becomes available. Jack Marrion and Claire Goodman contributed to this report.

Best Travel Essentials To Take On Vacation To Stay Healthy – Thrillist https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/best-travel-essentials-to-take-on-vacation-to-stay-healthy-thrillist/ Hit the road and skip the sniffles. Updated on 10/11/2022 at 4:04 PM Everyday life has been a little unusual the past few years. But while there may be a lot to handle at home, the stir-craziness is finally kicking in, which means it’s time to plan a vacation (or several). But once you’ve actually booked your flights or mapped out your road trip route, you may be wondering what to pack to stay healthy throughout your trip—because nothing’s less fun than coughing up a storm in a hotel room when you’re supposed to be out exploring the world. As public health remains an ongoing factor, it makes sense to add hygiene and wellness essentials to your packing list. No matter where you’re going, these 14 products will make your life a whole lot more pleasant when you’re traveling, so they’re definitely worth giving up a little space in your carry-on. Remember the days of using a random water fountain while traveling? No more. Save yourself from the ick factor and keep hydrated with this water bottle featuring a built-in micro filtration system, so you can enjoy safe drinking water whether you’re at an airport refilling station or camping by a stream or river. This chain is all about fashion, baby, or at least it looks that way. But the truth is it’s here to serve a function when you’re not just wearing it as a fun necklace. The limited-edition chain from a collaboration with pop star Kesha will prevent you from losing your face mask or vaccination card (or phone, or ID) when you’re moving between airports, train stations, bars, or museums. Just clip it to the important object you’re looking to safeguard and wear it around your neck, thread it through a belt loop, or attach it to your bag. The uses are basically infinite, and perfect for anyone who tends to lose stuff when they need it most. Sometimes you need a little extra something to get you in the laid-back vacation spirit, especially if it’s been a while since you took some time off. These vegan-friendly gummies do the trick with 10 milligrams of CBD per gumdrop, and we dig the cherry, lemon, lime, and tangerine flavors (warning: the tangerine gummies may mysteriously disappear if you share a bottle with us). A one-time purchase sets you back $29 while a monthly subscription is $23. It’s shots, shots, shots—except these ones won’t have you feeling sick the next morning. Flood your body with good-for-you nutrients while on vacation (or while gearing up for a vacation) with these organic wellness shots created with the help of holistic docs. Start your day (or attempt to revitalize yourself post-night-out) with the Immunity Boost Original, Immunity Boost Elderberry, Immunity Boost Cayenne, Immunity Boost Vitamin C, or Immunity Boost Vitamin D, K, and Zinc. We’re also surprising fans of the least-appetizing-sounding shot in the Vive Organics lineup, the Wellness Rescue Garlic, said to be the first packaged garlic shot on the market. The shot has 300 milligrams of fresh, pressed garlic and 10% of your daily value of zinc, so we’ll pony up and say “cheers” to that. Nothing (temporarily) wrecks your neck and shoulders like driving a car all day. Let this be the year you treat yourself to a personal massage gun to help you feel relaxed and restored after road tripping, carrying a heavy backpack, or falling asleep in an airplane aisle seat with no neck pillow (pro tip: get one!). The Hydragun is lightweight, quiet, and even works great as a recovery tool for when you’re back home with your regular gym routine. For those who want a little extra oomph from their water, along with a tasty peach flavor, these Aila energy mixes should do the trick. They’re made entirely from superfoods and vitamins (and organic caffeine from green tea) to give you a jolt of energy in the morning, help you work through jet lag, or perk you up between activities. Bonus: you can also add the mixes to coffee, smoothies, or your favorite kind of milk to enjoy your beverage of choice with an additional slew of antioxidants and three B vitamins. Whether you need proof of a negative test in a jiffy or feel safer traveling knowing you can test and self-isolate as needed from the comfort of your hotel room or vacation rental, this rapid over-the-counter self-test detects the SARS-CoV-2 antigen in just 15 minutes. The results show up on a little card, and they’re easy to interpret. Before traveling, be sure to review the requirements of your destination so that you know their entry protocols. If nothing else, even if you’re not traveling, consider keeping an extra test kit or two at home for peace of mind. If the idea of leaving your comb, toothbrush and other necessities on the bathroom counter of your hotel sends you into a germophobic spiral—or if you just love to stay organized—we’re big fans of this compact toothbrush holder and rinse cup that keeps your items stashed securely away from new surfaces. It comes with two lotion and shampoo containers, as well as a hidden compartment for cash or other essentials. Pro tip: If you’re buying more than one, purchase ’em in different colors, so everyone in your vacation pod knows which is theirs. While the risk of catching COVID from surfaces is low, there are lots of nasty germs circulating in all the spaces we encounter while we travel. If you’d like to reduce your risk of catching any sort of trip-ruining bug, you may want to take all the precautions you can, including sanitizing your phone or other small items that you’d rather not subject to soap and water or alcohol. This UV sanitizer kills 99.9% of germs, while also allowing you to charge your phone by inserting your charger cable into the device. You can also place your keys, credit cards, earbuds, and more in the vessel, which cleans whatever you put in it in 6 minutes flat. Look, guzzling orange juice or popping a vitamin aren’t magic bullets, but there’s nothing wrong with trying to bolster your health and immune system. Travel can make you feel run-down and tired, and taking a daily immunity-boosting supplement like these gummies can be a great way to really help your immune system weather any journey. The vegan gummies contain vitamin C, zinc, and elderberry, and HUM recommends taking two at a time. As always, consult with a trusted healthcare professional before adding any new supplement to your routine. Get your spritz on with this convenient hand sanitizer spray that fits in your pocket or purse. It uses 70% alcohol in an FDA-compliant formula to halt bacteria, microbes, and microorganisms in their tracks. We’re fans of the unscented version made with soothing aloe, but if you prefer a light musk, go for the Green Mandarin version, made with certified organic green mandarin essential oil and aloe. We’ll be the first to admit that earbuds aren’t exactly a health product, but the ability to listen to music (or drown out unwelcome noises) feels like a must for emotional wellbeing. These Beats wireless earbuds are equipped with flexible wingtips that create an essentially custom fit in your ear, so they stay super secure. They come with active noise canceling technology, so you can drown out the noise of your fellow passengers while trying to sleep on the plane, as well as a transparency listening mode that lets you hear what’s going on around you when you’re walking around a new city. An Apple H1 chip ensures a seamless listening experience for iPhone users, while Android users can download a companion app to access additional features. Much like earbuds, this isn’t strictly a health product. But over the past few years, being able to stream a show or few at the end of the day has felt like an important way to relax and take your mind off anything stressful. Use this portable gadget from Roku to plug into the back of the TV at your hotel or vacation rental so you can wind down with The Rings of Power or Abbott Elementary after a long day of exploring. You could travel without any first-aid gear, but it’s probably not a very good idea. Aside from having the stuff you need to take care of any unexpected injuries, you also might just want moleskine if you’re walking a lot and are starting to get blisters, or medication in case some of the new marvels you encounter give you allergic reactions. This kit is designed for hiking, which makes it a great choice for a travel medical kit, since it’s lightweight, compact, and comes packed in a water-resistant bag. Stash it in your backpack, suitcase, or vehicle and know you’ll always have access to items like bandages and medical tape, elastic strips for ankle sprains, antiseptic wipes, pre-cut pieces of moleskine, tweezers, and meds including aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and antihistamines. Older Adults Living Unhealthy Lifestyles Twice As Likely To End Up In A Nursing Home – Study Finds https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/older-adults-living-unhealthy-lifestyles-twice-as-likely-to-end-up-in-a-nursing-home-study-finds/ SYDNEY, Australia — Older adults who lead an unhealthy lifestyle are twice as likely to end up needing a nursing home in comparison to their more active peers, a new study reveals. Researchers at the University of Sydney found smoking, physical activity, sitting, and sleep quality to have a strong link to nursing home admission rates. Surprisingly, diet quality did not display the same connection. Smokers were 55 percent more likely than non-smokers to end up needing nursing care. For the study, which is the first of its kind, researchers looked at data on more than 127,000 Australians who took part in a large study on healthy aging between 2006 and 2009. Study authors followed up with these patients for 11 years on average. The team divided them into the three risk groups based on five lifestyle factors: smoking, physical activity, sitting, sleep quality, and diet quality. One quarter of participants (24%) ended up in the lowest risk group with a score of nine or 10 points. Almost two-thirds (62%) were in the medium risk group with a score of six to eight points and 14 percent were in the unhealthiest group with a score below five points. The Australian research team found people over 60 who eat badly and spend too much time on the sofa were 43 percent more likely to end up in a nursing home compared with the fittest retirees. Older people with a moderately healthy lifestyle were 12 percent more likely to need nursing home care than the healthiest seniors. Younger seniors see the double the risk Participants’ lifestyles were then ranked from one to 10, with one representing the unhealthiest lifestyles and 10 the healthiest. The risk of needing nursing home care increased by 19 percent with every unit decrease in healthy lifestyle scores. People with the lowest scores saw their risk double compared with people scoring the highest. This risk was higher for the least healthy 60 to 64-year-olds (2.15 times) compared with the unhealthiest 65 to 74-year-olds (61% risk) and 75 to 84-year-olds (36%). “Effective strategies to prevent or delay older adults entering nursing home care will help ensure society can adequately care for its increasing number of older people,” says lead study author Dr. Alice Gibson from the University of Sydney, according to a statement from SWNS. “Our study highlights the potential of preventing or delaying nursing home admission among at-risk individuals during ageing with interventions that promote a healthy lifestyle. This could be a powerful motivator for many individuals to adopt or maintain a healthier lifestyle.” “Further, our findings may also incentivize government investment in preventative healthcare and health promotion given the greater cost associated with caring for people in institutions,” the researchers tell SWNS. “This will require a shift in health policy towards preventative health. It is important to consider lifestyle risk factors not only in the prevention of chronic diseases but also in reducing or delaying long-term nursing home admission.” The team presented their findings at the International Conference on Obesity in Melbourne, Australia. Astros-Mariners Score: Live Updates From ALDS Game 1 – CBS Sports https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/astros-mariners-score-live-updates-from-alds-game-1-cbs-sports/ The Houston Astros are hosting the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday in Game 1 of the best-of-five American League Division Series. The Mariners chased Astros starter and AL Cy Young Award frontrunner Justin Verlander early and are trying to hold onto a Game 1 win. The Mariners, participating in the postseason for the first time since 2001, got here by sweeping the Toronto Blue Jays in two games in the opening-round Wild Card Series. The Astros, top seed in the AL bracket, arrived here via first-round bye, which they earned by being one of the two top division winners. As you would imagine, the Game 1 stakes are high, as the winner of the opener in a best-of-five MLB postseason series goes on to win that series 71.3 percent of the time.  Below you’ll find our live updates and running analysis of Game 1 between the Mariners and Astros.  See New Posts Pinned Former Rays RP Diego Castillo is in Guessing the last two innings will be mostly Andrés Muñoz but could see some Erik Swanson and/or Paul Sewald mixed in. Pinned Pinned Mariners bats are still hot Eugenio Suarez homers and it’s 7-3 Mariners. They scored 21 runs combined in their last three games of the regular season and then 14 in their two-game sweep of the Blue Jays. They appear to be ready to average seven runs per game the rest of the way. That’s sustainable, right?  Pinned Pinned Pinned Astros threaten in the sixth But they strand the runner. It’s 6-3 Mariners through six and they have a stellar late-inning bullpen. Of course, the Astros’ offense is awesome, too, so it won’t be easy.  Pinned Julio joins elite company  Pinned Mariners still in control As of the pitching change, Seattle has roughly an 85 percent chance of winning Game 1, according to win expectancy principles. Pinned Pinned Halfway home We’re through 4 1/2 innings and the Mariners have a 6-3 lead. Fair to write that this would be a huge win for the Mariners, who will have Luis Castillo on the bump for Game 2. Pinned Pinned Pinned Two-out runs for Astros They are on the board with a Yordan Alvarez double to the corner of the Crawford Boxes. It’s 4-2 Mariners. Four runs in this building for this team is easily workable and it’s now down to two.  Pinned Yordan gets the Mariners on the board Two-run double off the top of the wall in left. I thought it had a chance to go off the bat and it almost did. It’s 4-2 Mariners. Pinned Alvarez plates a pair with a double Yordan Alvarez is one of the best hitters in the world, and he just scored two on a long double to left. The Astros are now down 4-2.
