South Korean Police Have Seized $1.3m In Crypto In 2022, Critics Say It’s Not Enough – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/south-korean-police-have-seized-1-3m-in-crypto-in-2022-critics-say-its-not-enough-cryptonews/ Source: Thierry Chabot/Unsplash South Korean police have seized $1.3 million worth of crypto in criminal investigations so far this year, official numbers have revealed. According to Segye Ilbo, the figure is just a small fraction (1.4%) of the total $92 million worth of assets seized by officers in criminal investigations. The data was compiled by the National Police Agency and made public by Choi Ki-sang, a Democratic Party lawmaker. It includes figures from the “first half” of 2022, with a total for the year unlikely to be made public until the middle of 2023. The statistics also showed that officers had asked courts to let them confiscate cryptoassets in 13 separate cases this year. In 2021, officers made 36 such requests – and only made eight requests in the whole of 2020. $1.3 m Seized: Officers ‘Can’t Keep up with Criminals’ Critics claim that the modest figure of $1.3 million shows that the police simply lack the knowledge and IT capabilities required to fight Web3-era crime. They claim that officers are unable to keep up with criminals – with some stating that crypto-powered money laundering is actually rising sharply in South Korea. The police force last year announced the launch of a network of specialized crypto teams, while the government is set to respond by launching a new crypto regulator. And, more recently, the nation’s prosecution service announced that it is ready to spend big on sophisticated crypto monitoring tools. But despite claims that officers are getting better at stopping crypto-related crime, experts beg to differ. Lee Woong-hyuk, a Professor of Policing at the elite Konkuk University, was quoted as stating: “Money-laundering technology related to cryptoassets becomes more complex and more intelligent as the years go by, but investigative agencies […] cannot keep pace. There may be a need for government-level [intervention] to increase the amount of [illicit crypto seized in criminal investigations] and support investigations in cases related to cryptoassets.”

Taiwan And U.S. Tensions With China Pose ‘serious’ Challenges For Chip Industry – TSMC – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/taiwan-and-u-s-tensions-with-china-pose-serious-challenges-for-chip-industry-tsmc-reuters/ TSMC chairman Mark Liu makes a speech at the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association convention in Hsinchu, Taiwan, October 19, 2022. REUTERS/Ann Wang HSINCHU, Taiwan, Oct 19 (Reuters) – Rising Taiwan-China and U.S.-China tensions have brought “more serious” challenges for the semiconductor industry, the chairman of Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC (2330.TW) said on Wednesday. Taiwan is a major producer of chips used in everything from cars and smartphones to data centres and fighter jets, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) is the world’s largest contract chipmaker and Asia’s most valuable listed firm. While the chips sector is already bracing for waning demand as red-hot inflation squeezes spending, Taiwan faces a tougher situation – sandwiched between its largest export market China and its main international backer and arms supplier, the United States – especially as Beijing steps up military pressure to force Taipei to accept Chinese sovereignty claims. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Speaking at the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association’s annual convention, TSMC Chairman Mark Liu said: “The U.S.-China trade conflict and the escalation of cross-Strait tensions have brought more serious challenges to all industries, including the semiconductor industry.” In recent years, China’s government has “never stopped promoting its domestic semiconductor industry”, including chip design, manufacturing, and packaging, he said. The United States has also passed its CHIPS Act to vigorously support local research and development and manufacturing, Liu said. Liu said he looked forward to Taiwan’s industry, government and academia developing “more concrete, constructive measures” on industrial policies related to innovation, research, talent education and retention “to maintain Taiwan’s most critical semiconductor industry advantages”. He noted that this year the “industry value” of Taiwan’s chip sector is expected to have risen one-fifth compared with 2021, even with the impact of Sino-U.S. trade friction and geopolitical problems. While Liu did not make direct mention of it, the sweeping set of export controls announced by the United States this month, aimed at slowing China’s progress in advanced chip manufacturing, is expected to also impact Taiwanese chipmakers. The new rules require U.S. companies to cease supplying Chinese chipmakers with equipment to make relatively advanced chips, though Washington has granted some non-Chinese companies operating in China one-year licenses.” “The difficulty this time will be a very big challenge,” Nicky Lu, chairman of Taiwan chip design firm Etron Technology Inc (5351.TWO), told reporters ahead of the event. “No one will escape the impact.” Frank Huang, chairman of Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp , said the sector was caught in a difficult situation. “We do business on both sides of the Strait. So we can’t listen to the U.S. and not do any business with mainland China. Then what would everyone eat?” Huang said. “Our industry’s position is to maintain our competitiveness.” TSMC, which makes most of its chips in Taiwan, last week cut its annual investment budget by at least 10% for 2022 and struck a more cautious note than usual on upcoming demand. read more TSMC’s dominance in making some of the world’s most advanced chips for high-end customers such as Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) has shielded it in recent quarters from the downturn flagged by chipmakers including Micron Technology Inc (MU.O). Relax Gaming: Technology Supporting Game Innovation – European Gaming Industry News – European Gaming Industry News https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/relax-gaming-technology-supporting-game-innovation-european-gaming-industry-news-european-gaming-industry-news/ Reading Time: 6 minutes There is an old, now-defunct saying in football that women can’t understand the offside rule. While there was no such explicit quote, the feeling has been pretty much the same in esports, if you go by the low number of women playing the sports. Now, who will do something to change the gender disparity in esports? Enter VCT Game Changers. VCT Game Changers is an esports program exclusively for women where gamers play Riot Games’ hit video game VALORANT. The Game Changers tournament is into its third edition this year. We have here with us Ashley Washington, Head of VCT Game Changers EMEA. She talks about, well, the game-changing situation in esports. Her responses are insightful and stats-rich. Don’t miss it. Q. Let’s start with a quick intro. How did you land in the gaming industry? A. This is a very reductive version of the story but I was working in account management and sales in NYC after graduating from New York University. Though I did study game design, I wasn’t really sure of myself when it came to making a career in the industry. There was an evening in January of 2016 when I’d just paid my rent—a paycheck and a half—and I just decided that I wanted to move to Berlin. I knew it was fun and cheap because I studied abroad there. I bought a one-way ticket and did that. Berlin is the kind of place where you can make almost anything happen for yourself career-wise, so I chased my dreams and made the switch! I’ve done quality assurance work, data science, journalism and, it turns out, I’m strongest as a product leader. Q. Tell us about Valorant Game Changers: Mission, vision, mode of operation and all that? A. VCT Game Changers is a program meant to introduce women to the VALORANT ecosystem, guide them in the cultivation of their skills and, ideally, see them make their way out of the program and into the rest of the VALORANT competitive space. The goal is to have a diversified ecosystem where people from a variety of identities and backgrounds can excel at the highest levels of play. So far, we’ve set out to achieve this by running the tournament circuit that most are familiar with but, in the future, we are working to find additional ways we can make this vision into a reality. Q. How do you analyse your performance so far? Could you talk about the changes you have brought about in esports, especially in terms of the participation of women? A. I think there are some obvious things we are looking at and some less obvious things. Really high on the list is participation. We recently maxed out signups for the first time with 130 teams registered out of 128, meaning two teams were on the waitlist when signups closed. Ultimately we saw 126 teams participate, this is over 600 players which is great to see. We set out to create a safe space, so seeing more and more women choose to enter it is absolutely a win. One of the other stronger indicators of success, at least from my perspective, is to see women in rosters in the rest of VALORANT Champions Tour EMEA . Whilst it’s not yet exactly standard, mixed rosters can already be seen in third party VALORANT tournaments, like BLAST Spike Nations, and that’s a beautiful thing as well. Q. Valorant Game Changers tournament is into its third series now. How has the tournament evolved and progressed over the three series? A. Growth is probably the biggest evolving factor for Game Changers at this stage. For example, just this year, we saw 91 teams participate in the second series. In the third series, we had 126 teams. In addition to more teams, we are seeing the strength of the teams grow as well. The players are becoming increasingly more skilled and the competitive spirit among EMEA teams is a lot more dynamic. There are a lot of really interesting team and player stories developing and a notable increase in participation from regions that are usually not represented like Turkey and MENA (and some parts of Europe). So, the community that we’ve grown with the tournament is maturing in many ways. Q. The number of women participating in esports is still low, with reference to an ideal scenario. What do you think are the hindrances women face in entering and excelling at esports? A. I’ve spent a lot of time talking to women in the scene playing different titles and coming from different backgrounds. The things I hear referenced the most come down to the lack of opportunities (both perceived and actual—they’re equally as bad when the result is the same) and a fear of career instability should they decide to go all in with esports. Many of these women have a hard time convincing orgs to give them a chance or, when they do, getting adequate pay that allows them to focus on doing their best. The women end up needing to maintain their studies or another job so that they have a backup plan in the event that things don’t work out. This happens in esports in general but it would seem that this is a very common experience for women entering the space. It’s very important that any organisation interested in providing these opportunities to women is also committed to investing in their careers as well. Bringing a group of women together just to have that roster there without paying any mind to what they need to thrive and grow is a costly and painful mistake. It leaves its mark and it can be incredibly discouraging for those that it affects. Of course I also hear from women who have terrible experiences due to toxicity and the lack of confidence that can come from that or just not seeing enough representation in general. This kind of thing can strike when they’re so young that they don’t even consider trying to play competitively when they get older. It doesn’t end with players either, underrepresentation is happening in every area—women working in talent or esports-related companies might also face these issues. Q. What kind of activities is Valorant Game Changers undertaking for training and mentoring women in esports? A. Our approach to this varies regionally. Since Game Changers is still young, not every region has a training supplement, EMEA included. But we are hoping to introduce something like this relatively soon. The most important thing is finding something that is best suited to the region and what the Game Changers community is looking for, so we’ve been doing a lot of listening for now. Q. How are you looking into the future regarding women’s participation in esports? In which countries do you hope to see a surge in numbers in terms of women players? A. EMEA is already so strong when it comes to this. The interest in esports among women is high and every year, the landscape for opportunities to play is looking brighter and brighter. Continuing with this is the first thing I hope and fully expect to see. When it comes to regional representation, I dream of higher numbers from MENA—so North Africa and the Middle East. This is already happening so tapping into what players from these regions need to feel comfortable taking the leap is one of many focus points I have looking ahead to the future. Though I can safely say that I wouldn’t complain about an increase from any space in the region. This is one of the rare occasions in life where more is absolutely better. Q. Finally, what kind of initiatives do you want to see in the esports industry in general –- by governments and other organisations — to ensure the number of women in esports continues to increase? A. I would love to see more support for younger fans who are curious about playing or being in the industry in general. I think it’s very easy to write off “gaming” as a viable job option but I think that has a lot to do with how few resources there are for school-aged players and their families to have an idea of what this could really look like—whether that’s playing, organising or being part of a broadcast. I mean, I have a pretty standard job that I’m pretty sure my parents never imagined would fall under “working with games”. I think they’re not the only ones. And, ultimately, I would love to see more initiatives tap into intersectionality. It’s so important to help women feel comfortable in the space, but once that’s begun, there are so many groups within this identity that could use a bit of a lift. For example, I didn’t see many other black women in the industry growing up and it’s a lot of the reason why I didn’t bother doing anything beyond studying games for a while. Eventually, I felt brave enough to go for it anyway but there are so many others like me who won’t even make it that far with it without knowing for sure that it’s possible. Initiatives connecting young players from underrepresented groups is one way to kind of combine both of these things. There are already programs like this out there and I am really excited about seeing that continue to develop in the future. There is room for everyone in esports. If they truly want to be there, they can be—I really do believe that.

All you need to do is share your vision with us and we’ll help you make it happen.” There are not a lot of Tarrant County wedding venues that provide complimentary parking for up to 300 guests along with dining chairs, bar stools, banquet tables, farm-style dining tables, and cocktail round tables – TEC is an exception of course. It is in Haltom City, just minutes away from downtown attractions in Fort Worth such as Fort Worth Water Gardens and Sundance Square. “Our center location puts you and your guests right where the action is,” adds Jennifer. TEC also has a bring-your-own food and alcohol policy which means you can customize your reception party with your preferred alcohol. There’s no need to worry about having a limited selection of brands, package prices, or corkage or per-guest fees (whether order a glass or not). “This venue was perfect for my friend’s wedding. The amenities and amount of space was off the charts,” says Tyler Liser. “We were able to comfortably fit 250 guests using the tables Tarrant Events Center provided. The sound system was incredible and super easy to use, given the instructions provided. Dementia: Could Therapy Be Beneficial For Dementia Patients? – NDTV Doctor https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/dementia-could-therapy-be-beneficial-for-dementia-patients-ndtv-doctor/ Home »  Living Healthy »  Dementia: Could Therapy Be Beneficial For Dementia Patients? Dementia: Patients with moderate cognitive impairment or early-stage dementia benefit most from physical and cognitive therapy.   By: Manya Singh  Updated: Oct 19, 2022 10:24 IST 3-Min Read Dementia: Therapy can help manage the emotional effects of having dementia What is dementia? A phenomenon known as dementia refers to a decline in cognitive performance that goes beyond what may be anticipated from the typical effects of biological ageing. Although dementia mostly affects older individuals, it is not a necessary part of becoming older. A set of symptoms that substantially impair memory, reasoning, and social skills are referred to be dementia when they significantly interfere with day-to-day functioning. Although there isn’t one particular illness that causes dementia, many illnesses can. How to identify dementia? Memory loss is a common symptom of dementia, although it can have many different causes. Memory loss alone does not always indicate dementia, despite the fact that it is frequently one of the first symptoms of the illness. Although there are several additional causes of dementia, Alzheimer’s disease is the most frequent one in older persons. Some dementia symptoms might be reversible, depending on the underlying reason. How can therapy benefit dementia patients? Damage to or loss of the brain’s nerve cells and connections is what leads to dementia. Dementia can have varied effects on different people and produce distinct symptoms depending on the part of the brain that is affected. Dementias are frequently categorised according to characteristics they share, such as the protein or proteins deposited in the brain or the area of the brain affected. Some illnesses that resemble dementias, particularly those brought on by pharmaceutical interactions or vitamin shortages, may get better with therapy. According to a recent study, people with dementia who experience anxiety or sadness may benefit from talking therapy. Persons with dementia frequently have mental health issues including sadness and anxiety, and prior research indicates that 38% of people with moderate dementia experience these illnesses. The latest study, however, is the first to examine whether talking therapy frequently provided in hospital settings could be useful in alleviating symptoms. It was published in eClinicalMedicine. As you can imagine, a condition that impairs one’s cognitive abilities and memories may cause harm to one’s emotional health. Lack of proper treatment or lack of care and support in the surroundings can lead to making this condition unbearable. Anxiety, panic attacks as well as depression may be caused due to a reaction to being diagnosed with dementia. Besides medication, therapy is viewed as an effective way to treat these mood disorders. Patients with moderate cognitive impairment or early-stage dementia benefit most from physical and cognitive therapy. These individuals are best able to comprehend what we are asking them to do, and their brains are more equipped to do the activities. The focus of therapy and available treatments change as dementia progresses. Patients with more severe dementia could benefit from working only with an occupational therapist who specialises in daily living skills, for example. Is therapy an alternative to medication? Some individuals are concerned as to whether therapy can eliminate their need for medication. It’s possible that medication is not necessary if you have moderate cognitive impairment (MCI). Medication is a good idea for mild dementia or even more severe disease development. In general, you are advised to try everything that could be beneficial. Therapy alone is frequently adequate for MCI. It is frequently advantageous to explore both medicine and treatment for dementia with a recognised aetiology. Keep these things in mind if you or someone you know is experiencing dementia. Disclaimer: This content including advice provides generic information only. Crypto Casino Games: From Metaverse Casinos To Blockchain Bets, Read This First – BeInCrypto https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/crypto-casino-games-from-metaverse-casinos-to-blockchain-bets-read-this-first-beincrypto/ Crypto casino games are on the rise. There are even casinos in the metaverse. Things are moving fast in online gambling. We break it down for you. The metaverse called Decentraland is now home to the Holy Temple Casino. The 42-parcel estate will have one of the largest footprints in the virtual world. Launched by a company called Metaskins, the casino hopes to be a destination for gaming, parties and entertainment. Games include a metaverse lottery and card games including blackjack. Plus there will be scavenger hunts, which can earn players tokens that they can then use for more games. Players can bet against each other or against the house. To play, you need to buy the native token, MANA. Enter here. Source This is not the only metaverse casino. In some other iterations, not only can you bet, you can also purchase land inside some casinos. If a high-revenue blackjack table is on your land, you get a share of the profits. Crypto Casino Games Are Springing up Everywhere An astonishing array of online crypto casino games have sprung up in the past few years. Some of these have been rugpulls, whereby punters hand over money and never see it again. Others are legal, but as always, the odds are stacked against the player and the profits go to the house. In this way, gambling needs to be seen as entertainment only, where you can pay big to be ‘entertained.’ But it might not all be risky and scam-infested. New types of crypto casino games are making themselves known. These use blockchain and Web3 to garner confidence with their audiences. Web3 Crypto Casino Games The idea that anything to do with crypto could make betting safer might seem crazy. However, the development of decentralized blockchain-based Web3 technology is steaming ahead. Platforms are being created that let users own their own data and assets, rather than hand them over to corporates. The blockchain does this in an environment that is open, trustless, decentralized, and transparent. This could address many of the problems of Web2 platforms. Despite gambling being totally legal in a lot of places, people are still putting billions of dollars into unregulated offshore sites. This leaves players as sitting ducks for bad actors. Such sites can disappear overnight, along with players’ crypto. Blockchain Betting Carlos Liang is the CEO of Divvy.bet, a betting site that uses the blockchain. Liang says, “Users of blockchain-based betting platforms have no bad guys to worry about. Every transaction is governed by a smart contract, an immutable, autonomous program that operates according to the terms agreed by the user.” Liang says that rather than handing over crypto to a third party, all players have to do is connect their own crypto wallet to the protocol. “Cutting out the middleman in this way leads to a vastly improved, more frictionless user experience. There’s no more handing over of private data, no more exorbitant withdrawal fees, no more concern over manipulation of spreads by sportsbook companies.” Platforms like Divvy.bet using Web3 protocols give users full transparency into the betting pools they’re using. This allows players to manage their risks more effectively. Says Liang, “You’ll be able to see your funds, have full control over them once bets are settled, and know that there’s enough money in the house to pay you out. That’s a big improvement on traditional sports betting platforms, which are effectively a black box in terms of how your funds are being used and how much liquidity is available.” Other Blockchain Betting Sites Another blockchain crypto betting site is Betswap.gg which is built on the Polygon blockchain. It is a peer-to-peer decentralized sports trading exchange, and uses a native token, $BSGG. The company say they have reworked the traditional betting model to create a betting exchange where users bet against one another rather than against the platform. “Participants can choose to be a better or a bookmaker, with Betswap.gg providing a transparent betting model with no hidden fees and minimal gas fees. Betswap.gg does not require users to go through a tedious onboarding process. All you have to do is connect your wallet, and within minutes, you can start betting. Betswap.gg does not at any point take custody of users’ funds, allowing players to place individual bets directly from their wallets and withdraw their winnings seamlessly, safely, and instantly.” Crypto Casino Games and Influencers As crypto casino games sites have popped up, influencers are being paid to play the games and livestream to their audiences. However, what you find buried deep in the disclaimer is that these influencers have been given the money that they bet, in addition to getting huge payout for streaming the content. Max Maher runs a channel with nearly one million subscribers. He says, “Many streamers do give regular disclaimers talking about the dangers of gambling. However, streamers are being paid absurd amounts of money just to play games on these sites. Streamers are oftentimes given the money that they’re gambling with – they’re not gambling with their own money. This of course incentivizes the streamers to be more reckless in the game.” One Youtuber has anonymously said on Maher’s site that he is paid one million a month to stream casino games. Maher says streamers are falling into temptation and taking the deals regardless of how morally conflicted they might feel about it. It is still the viewers job to make responsible decisions. However, these streams are reaching kids, especially on platforms like Amazon-owned Twitch, which is full of kids. The platform however has started to crack down on unlicensed gambling sites. But, if you do like a gamble, and you want to play online, then you are one search engine inquiry away from millions of options. Or you could just stick to trading crypto in a bear market. That is a gamble in itself. Got something to say about crypto casino games or anything else? Write to us or join the discussion in our Telegram channel. Institutions ‘moving Very, Very Fast’ Into Crypto: Coinbase Exec – Cointelegraph https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/institutions-moving-very-very-fast-into-crypto-coinbase-exec-cointelegraph/ D’Agostino also said the recent battles between the SEC and CFTC is a good thing for crypto because it indicates that it will be a “vitally important piece of market structure” moving forward. 906 Total views 67 Total shares Institutional adoption of digital assets is “moving very, very fast,” and much faster than the rate nascent industries ordinarily develop at, says Coinbase Senior Advisor John D’Agostino. In an Oct. 18 interview with SALT moderated by Anthony Scaramucci, D’Agostino said that new asset classes often take time to develop, as “institutional inertia is a very real thing” and “there’s a lot of switching costs associated with adding new assets” but that this hasn’t been the case with crypto. “So for me, for someone who spent 15 years trying to get commodities to be mainstream, it’s actually moving fast. But I do understand why somebody in the heat of the moment feels it’s glacial. But for institutions I think it’s moving very, very fast.” As for what may have slowed institutional adoption, D’Agostino said that U.S. regulators have been “complacent” to the point that it harmed “the growth of the technology.” But interestingly, D’Agostino sees the “bifurcated regulatory regime” between the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) “as a good thing” because “nobody fights over something that is going to go away.” “The fact that crypto is being used as a bargaining chip by the heads of regulatory agencies [and] the fact that these public announcements are being made to push a positioning around which regulatory agency will be in control is an indication that this is a vitally important piece of market structure.” Related: Wealth managers and VCs are helping drive institutional crypto adoption — Wave Financial execs D’Agostino was adamant that a crypto-related Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) will eventually be approved, despite the SEC’s ongoing rejections. “I think that’s going to change. Despite the delay, an ETF is inevitable. I can’t tell you when it’s going to happen. But I know at some point it’s going to happen.” Co-founder and CEO of Singaporean crypto exchange Coinhako Yusho Liu recently told Cointelegraph that he expected institutional interest to keep growing as the industry matures. “We believe institutional flows into the market will continue to grow and serve as a crucial driver for future crypto innovation and adoption,” he said.

US Basketball Star Griner, Facing Russian Jail Term, Sends Thanks For Support – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/us-basketball-star-griner-facing-russian-jail-term-sends-thanks-for-support-reuters/ MOSCOW, Oct 18 (Reuters) – American WNBA basketball star Brittney Griner, whose appeal against a Russian jail term is due to be heard next week, sent her supporters a message of thanks on Tuesday, her 32nd birthday. The two-time Olympic gold medallist was arrested on Feb. 17 at a Moscow airport with vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage, and was sentenced on Aug. 4 to nine years in a penal colony on drug smuggling charges. Her appeal is due to be heard next Tuesday. “All the support and love are definitely helping me,” Griner was quoted as saying by her lawyers Maria Blagovolina and Alexander Boykov, who spent several hours with her in the Moscow pre-trial detention centre where she is being held. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Griner pleaded guilty at her trial but said she had made an “honest mistake” and not meant to break the law. Cannabis is illegal in Russia for both medicinal and recreational purposes. “Today is of course a difficult day for Brittney,” said Blagovolina, who is representing Griner in court. “Not only is this her birthday in jail away from her family, team mates and friends, but she is very stressed in anticipation of the appeal hearing on Oct. 25.” Washington says Griner was wrongfully detained and has offered to exchange her for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer serving a 25-year prison sentence in the United States. It said last week it had had no consular access to her since August. Moscow has also suggested it is open to a prisoner swap. Bill Richardson, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations who travelled to Moscow in September, has said he believes Griner and former U.S. Marine Paul Whelan could both be released by the end of the year. 20 Beachy Looks That Will Inspire Your Next Summer Trip Glam
20 Beachy Looks That Will Inspire Your Next Summer Trip Glam
20 Beachy Looks That Will Inspire Your Next Summer Trip – Glam https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/20-beachy-looks-that-will-inspire-your-next-summer-trip-glam/ Look Studio/Shutterstock When you think about going on vacation, do you picture yourself laying out on a beach? According to Travel + Leisure, Florida, Panama, Mexico, and Greece are all home to beautiful beaches and are popular and affordable vacation spots. Whether you’re visiting for a romantic getaway, a solo escape, or a trip with friends, a beach vacation is typically always a good time because it’s easy to wind down and relax. There’s nothing bustling and rushed at the beach; it’s a stark contrast to a busy office environment. When the water is clear and the sand is soft, the beach feels even more magical.  Something else that makes a beach trip fun is being able to wear your favorite beachwear looks. Obviously a swimsuit is a given, but what else are you going to wear to give off beach vibes? According to Mood Designer Fabrics, fashion is all about keeping up with ever-changing trends and knowing what’s popular at any given moment; it can be fickle, but that’s what makes it so fun. Here are some fabulously trendy pieces you can add to your beachy look. Criss-cross crop top Red Umbrella and Donkey/Shutterstock There’s something very flirty and fun about wearing a crop top. And criss-cross crop tops up the sultry factor because they reveal even more skin, which is perfect for the beach. Look to La’Mazi on Instagram for style inspo. The brand’s criss-cross crop tops are just revealing enough without being vulgar. Off-the-shoulder top Roman Samborskyi/Shutterstock If you’re wearing a bandeau-style bikini, an off-the-shoulder top or dress can make a cute cover-up. The style is figure-flattering and breezy, as evidenced by options from UK-based brand Lindsay Brown on Instagram. This style can really look great on anyone.  Off-the-shoulder tops can also be paired with jean shorts, mini skirts, or flowy maxi skirts for plenty of outfit variation. Mini skirt Roman Samborskyi/Shutterstock Mini skirts show off your legs in a fun and flirty way and are perfect for warm beach days. You can easily throw on a bikini under your mini and be on your way. Another plus about mini skirts is that they also come in a huge assortment of colors and patterns, like the ones designed by Debbie Dannheisser Threads on Instagram. Crochet crop top Alena Ozerova/Shutterstock There’s something very bohemian about a crochet crop top and it would definitely make a statement. Look to Spirit + Thread on Instagram for styling ideas. The brand’s orange crochet crop top is absolutely perfect for a trip to the beach. The best part about wearing a crochet crop top is that you can accessorize it with stunning boho-style jewelry, such as feathery earrings and necklaces, and stacked turquoise bracelets and rings.    Backless romper Comparable to sundresses, but way more unexpected, backless rompers are great for beach days. While wearing one, you can show off your back in a way that’s both chic and sexy, and catch some sun. Influencer @susyydarling_ on totally rocks the look on Instagram. Pair your romper with your bikini, and cute shoes and jewelry. Cut-out dress Vladimir Sukhachev/Shutterstock Cut-out dresses are sexy and bring the drama. Consider one the next time you’re enjoying a warm, summer beach day. Just as trendy as cut-out crop tops, cut-out dresses give the illusion of concealing more of your stomach, hips, and legs. Just slightly, though. Options from LadyTee Collection LLC on Instagram are giving total vacay vibes. Short sundress Sundresses come in all shapes and sizes, but short sundresses are a top-of-the-line choice when it comes to the perfect beach day attire. Influencer Isabela shares plenty of sundress styles on Instagram for her 220K+ followers. Her red sundress, shown above, had material that cinched in the stomach area to create the appearance of a flawlessly snatched waist. She accessorized it with a simple necklace. Ripped jean shorts fitzcrittle/Shutterstock It’s common to see people wearing denim shorts to the beach. But when these denim shorts are a bit ripped and rugged, they often appear even trendier than basic jean shorts. This acid wash pair shown by South + Main Boutique on Instagram would look great with swimsuits or tees. Sleeveless vest G Allen Penton/Shutterstock A sleeveless vest might be an unexpected piece of clothing to add over a bikini before your next trip to the beach, but it works, trust us. Look for colorful prints and light fabrics like linen or crochet. This option from The Tickled Pink Boutique on Instagram would be perfect. And because your arms and shoulders won’t be covered by any fabric, they’ll be free to catch some sun as soon as you leave the car. Just don’t forget the sunblock. Ruffle-trim shorts Fab_1/Shutterstock When you’re dressed in clothing that makes you feel good on the outside, you generally start feeling good on the inside out to match that vibe. And fun and flirty ruffle-trim shorts can definitely put you in a good mood. Like this blush pair by Saskia featured on Instagram, they also look great on the beach and are comfortable to throw on over your swimsuit. Belted romper Victoria Chudinova/Shutterstock Rompers look cute when worn to picnics and park dates, but they also look fabulous when worn to the beach. The belt helps to define your waistline and the loose fabric is comfortable and will keep you cool when temps rise. We’re loving this light and airy look from Cocowillow on Instagram. Loose shawl Juice Flair/Shutterstock Want to feel covered up at the beach while still having the ability to show off some skin at times? Look no further than a fashionable shawl to do the trick. Shawls complete any beach day look, and are available in many different color combinations and fabric weights. Mungo’s beach shawls, as featured on Instagram, come in gorgeous prints and are versatile enough to be used as towels. Maxi dress Edward Berthelot/Getty Images One thing that makes maxi dresses great to wear to the beach is the way they flow with the wind to give off a laidback, breezy vibe. Maxi dresses are long and loose enough to be flattering on all body types, so feel encouraged to rock one confidently. This colorful option from S/W/F on Instagram just screams beach day. T-shirt dress Seeing a T-shirt-turned-dress on someone like influencer Becciabey on Instagram is your inspiration to try out this cute style for a day at the beach. T-shirt dresses are known to be casual and fun, which means you never look like you’re trying too hard when you pull one of these out of your closet. And using an actual tee as your dress is fashion innovation at its best.  Tennis skirt There are no laws written in any rule books stating that tennis skirts are reserved only for tennis courts. Influencer Natalie King makes her own personal tennis skirt look gorgeous on Instagram. And you can totally adapt the look for a day of fun in the sun. Just add a swimsuit and water!  Cargo skirt Edward Berthelot/Getty Images Cargo skirts are all the rage in the world of fashion these days. When people think of cargo material, they typically think of cargo shorts or pants, but skirts deserve just as much love, especially if you choose to wear them at the beach. On Instagram, Fntsyangels noted a few iconic examples of cargo skirts and the different ways they can be styled. Wearing them with a bikini is definitely the way to go. Fishnet dress Edward Berthelot/Getty Images Since fishnet dresses cover you up without actually covering you up, they create a very flirty and fun illusion. According to Hidden Fashion on Instagram, fishnet dresses make staying home look good, but dresses this bold don’t deserve to be hidden away inside your house. A great place to rock one of these would be at the beach so that it reveals the details and color of your swimsuit underneath. V-neck tank top Edward Berthelot/Getty Images A v-neck tank top shows off your arms, shoulders, chest, and back, while still giving your midsection some coverage. Influencer Kiarra Brooke’s v-neck tank top on Instagram proves that this style is a total winner. Try wearing a simple black or white v-neck tank top to the beach with a colorful bikini. It will totally pop.  Oversized button-up When Instagram model Mecah May Wirht opened up on Instagram about wearing oversized button-ups during her pregnancy, she started a fashion movement. Oversized button-ups aren’t just reserved for women who are expecting a baby, though. They can be worn for a fun beach day since they are so easy to throw on and pull off, and very forgiving. The casual comfort and style of an oversized button-up are undeniable. Floral prints Roman Samborskyi/Shutterstock Most fashion lovers who care about keeping up with trends know that beachwear is all about floral print. Floral print belongs on anything and everything you might choose to wear to the beach, from accessories and cover-ups to shoes and swimsuits, just like this adorable bikini from Kamoni on Instagram. When you wear a floral print to the beach, you’re embodying a sense of nature’s beauty.

Asia Stocks Mixed After Wall St Rises On Corporate Profits – 69News WFMZ-TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/asia-stocks-mixed-after-wall-st-rises-on-corporate-profits-69news-wfmz-tv/ BEIJING (AP) — Asian stock markets were mixed Wednesday after Wall Street rose on strong corporate profit reports. Tokyo advanced while Shanghai and Hong Kong declined. The yen stayed near a two-decade low near 149 to the dollar. Oil prices gained. Wall Street’s benchmark S&P 500 index rose 1.1% on Tuesday after investment bank Goldman Sachs, military contractor Lockheed Martin and others reported strong results. Market sentiment is “looking positive so far amid forecast-beating earnings,” said Anderson Alves of ActivTrades in a report. The profit reports helped at least temporarily offset investor worries that repeated interest rate hikes by U.S., European and Asian central banks to control inflation that is at multi-decade highs might tip the global economy into recession. That concern has helped to drag U.S. stocks into a bear market, or a decline of more than 20% by the S&P 500 from its January high. The Nikkei 225 in Tokyo gained 0.7% to 27,353.87 while the Shanghai Composite Index lost 0.3% to 3,072.85. The Hang Seng in Hong Kong lost 0.9% to 16,766.79. The Kospi in Seoul added less than 0.1% to 2,251.88 and Sydney’s S&P-ASX 200 advanced 0.4% to 6,807.80. New Zealand and Southeast Asian markets advanced. On Wednesday, the S&P 500 gained 3,719.98 as 90% of the stocks in the index rose. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.1% to close at 30,523.80. The Nasdaq composite advanced 0.9% to 10,772.40. With no major economic data releases planned this week, investors focused on corporate earnings. Goldman Sachs rose 2.3%, which helped to lift other lenders. Lockheed Martin jumped 8.7%, giving other military-related stocks a boost. General Dynamics rose 3.8%, Northrop Grumman gained 6.7% and Raytheon Technologies added 3.4%. Johnson & Johnson slipped 0.3% after reporting solid financial result s but a narrowed forecast as it deals with a strong dollar cutting into sales outside the United States. American Airlines, Union Pacific and American Express also report results this week. In energy markets, benchmark U.S. crude rose 99 cents to $83.06 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Brent crude, the price basis for international oil trading, advanced 66 cents to $90.69 per barrel in London. The dollar eased to 149.16 yen from Tuesday’s 149.21 yen. The euro rose to 98.52 cents from 98.50 cents. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed without permission.

Lakeview Seniors Sweep Grand Valley | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/lakeview-seniors-sweep-grand-valley-news-sports-jobs-warren-tribune-chronicle/ Correspondent photo / Robert Hayes Lakeview sophomore Reagan Price kills the ball during her team’s 3-0 sweep of Grand Valley Tuesday evening. CORTLAND — For the final time in their volleyball career, the Lakeview seniors took their final steps at their own gym in a game uniform. Donning their royal blue jerseys with black numbers and lettering, the Bulldogs came into the playoffs eyeing one last opportunity to win at home, and take one stride closer to achieving their postseason goals. Of course, as a libero, senior Maddie Bayus stands out in a grey jersey with royal numbers and lettering. The senior had a goal for herself heading into the playoffs. The Bulldogs earned a 3-0 sweep over Grand Valley Tuesday night and Bayus achieved her goal of recording the 1000th dig of her career. “From sophomore year, I’ve definitely had to morph into this new player, but I’m so glad that I got to take on this role,” Bayus said. “Nothing makes me happier to take on this lead role and take on this back row, it’s been overwhelming, but it’s amazing. I knew I had to be loud in order to get the hitter’s attention, to get the other team’s attention, and to get my back row’s attention. I knew I had to be loud and a leader, I knew that I just had to always come with the biggest energy in order to people each other up.” Bayus knew at the beginning of this fall that reaching the 1,000 digs milestone was on the radar after posting 350 her sophomore year, then slightly less last season. She knew it was certainly possible as the regular season was winding down, but for Bayus, hitting the milestone at home meant that much more. “This is what I’ve been aiming for and working for, for a couple of weeks now to make sure I get it on our home court, so I’m honestly just so grateful that I was given the opportunity to get it on the home court and not somewhere else,” Bayus said. “Even though it would be great to get it anywhere, it’s just such a more amazing feeling.” While some high-school athletes play multiple sports, Bayus has only played volleyball throughout her high school career and fell in love with the game because during a gym class in junior high school. Since then, she’s always played with the current group of seniors, which has led to a natural chemistry on the court and has allowed the Bulldogs to thrive. “I think time is definitely a factor into it, once we do have all that time together, it’s way better for performing on the court because in volleyball there’s three jobs to do,” Bayus said. “As seniors we all do possess those roles, so it just makes the communication so much better between one another because we can trust each other, because we have that bond from so much time.” Bayus had 10 digs in the victory, with sophomore Molly Stuart earning 17 service points, Reagan Price tallying four aces and two blocks. Senior Tara Lytle recorded 16 kills and fellow classmate Maggie Pavlansky tallied 18 assists. Fourth-seeded Lakeview (20-3) won the three sets 25-6, 25-8, 25-11. “I’m very proud of Maddie, she’s come a long way. She works very hard and she loves to play volleyball,” said Bulldogs coach Heather Guthrie. “She set out at the beginning of the season this year to get 1,000 digs, she knew what she had to do. Her and I sat down and broke down how many kills she needed to get each game per set and she tried to achieve that every single time she stepped on the floor.” Moving down to Division III this season, the Bulldogs eye a potential district title after falling short the past few seasons. Tuesday evening was their first step. “(Grand Valley) was really scrappy, they’re in our spots, and we just had to keep working around it and getting our connections a little better, but overall I think we played pretty well,” Pavlansky said. “All of our hitters did pretty well tonight, we were pretty consistent overall, didn’t make a lot of errors so that helped, our connections were on, so it’s good.” Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

5G Enables Metaverse Revolution As 510m Consumers Sign Up – Guardian Nigeria https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/5g-enables-metaverse-revolution-as-510m-consumers-sign-up-guardian-nigeria/ As 5G uptake in many parts of the world bridges the milestone from early to mass adoption, major new Ericsson research – the industry’s global study underlines consumers’ growing commitment to the new technology and their expectations on next-generation uses cases. Called “5G: The Next Wave,” the Ericsson ConsumerLab report addresses the impact 5G has had on early adopter consumers since launching in various countries, as well as gauging the intention of non-5G subscribers to take up the technology – and their related expectations. The report forecasts that at least 30 per cent of smartphone users intend to take up a 5G subscription within the next year. The mix of Ericsson tracking data covering 5G launches since 2019, and the new consumer survey, has enabled Ericsson ConsumerLab to identify six key trends impacting the next wave of 5G adoption. The trends are that 5G adoption is inflation resilient. According to it, at least 510 million consumers across 37 markets are likely to take up 5G in 2023. Secondly, there is the next wave of users, who are demanding. Ericsson said the next wave of 5G users has high expectations of the performance of the technology, especially network coverage, compared to early adopters — who care about new innovative services enabled by 5G. Ericsson observed thirdly that perceived 5G availability is emerging as the new satisfaction benchmark among consumers. It noted that geographical coverage, indoor/outdoor coverage, and congregation hot-spot coverage are more important to building a user perception than population coverage. Fourtly, 5G is pushing up the usage of enhanced video and augmented reality. The Swedish firm said over the past two years, time spent on AR apps by 5G users has doubled to two hours per week. Ericsson is also of the view that 5G monetisation models are expected to evolve. According to it, six in 10 consumers expect 5G offerings to move beyond more data volume and speeds to on-demand tailored network capabilities for specific needs. On the sixth key trend, 5G adoption is setting the path to the metaverse. Ericsson claimed that 5G users on average are already spending one hour more per week on metaverse-related services than 4G users. They also expect two hours of more video content will be consumed weekly on mobile devices, 1.5 hours of which will be on AR/VR glasses by 2025. Largely, the report also addresses the speed of mainstream 5G adoption, whether consumer demands are being met, and 5G-related changes in smartphone behaviour – and their impact on network traffic. More than 49,000 consumers in 37 countries were interviewed in the research – the largest global 5G-related consumer survey in the industry to date and the largest consumer survey conducted by Ericsson on any topic. The survey scope is representative of the opinions of about 1.7 billion consumers worldwide, including 430 million 5G subscribers. Head of Ericsson ConsumerLab, Jasmeet Singh Sethi, said: “The scale of the research gives us an authentic insight into consumers’ views and attitudes to 5G. The report showed that the next wave of potential 5G users has different expectations from the technology compared to early adopters. Overall, consumers see engaging with 5G as an essential part of their future lifestyles.” He added: “It is interesting to note that 5G is emerging as an important enabler for early adopters to embrace metaverse-related services, such as socializing, playing and buying digital items in interactive 3D virtual gaming platforms. The amount of time spent on augmented reality apps by 5G users has also doubled over the past two years, compared to 4G users.

How To Watch Apple TV+ On Any Android Phone Or Tablet – Gadget Hacks https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/how-to-watch-apple-tv-on-any-android-phone-or-tablet-gadget-hacks/ With the prestige appeal of its original programming and relatively low subscription price, Apple TV+ is one of the more appealing streaming options out there — and you don’t need an Apple device to subscribe and watch movies, TV shows, sports, and other Apple TV+ content. The addition of Friday Night Baseball, where Apple secured exclusive broadcast rights to two Major League Baseball games every Friday, made the service appointment viewing for baseball fans this past season. And award-winning Apple TV+ Originals like “Ted Lasso,” “Severance,” “The Morning Show,” “CODA,” and “For All Mankind.” While an Apple TV app is available for Android TV devices, you’ll have to go a different route on your regular Android smartphone or tablet. The workaround requires an Apple ID login and an active Apple TV+ subscription. If you don’t have either, you can go to tv.apple.com to create an account and sign up. Don’t Miss: Get iPhone’s Dynamic Island on Your Android Phone for Quick Access to Notifications, Alerts, and Activities Step 1: Open Your Browser Fire up your preferred web browser, navigate to the tv.apple.com website, and tap the “Sign In” button at the top. Apple’s website specifically mentions Chrome and Firefox browsers, but we’ve verified that it works in other browsers too. Step 2: Log in with Your Apple ID First, you’ll be prompted to enter your Apple ID, then your password. With two-factor authentication enabled, you’ll need to enter a verification code. If you have a trusted Apple device, the code should appear on it, but you can tap “Didn’t get a verification code?” if you don’t have access to it right now. For those of you who never had an Apple device, Apple should send an SMS or call to your trusted phone number with the verification code. After entering your 2FA verification code, tap “Trust” when asked to trust your browser — but only if it’s your Android device — to avoid verifying your account next time. Step 3: Start Watching You’re in! Scroll down the screen or swipe right on the rows of thumbnails until you find what you want to watch. Or tap the blue hamburger menu at the left to search. After your tap your selection, the video will load up immediately. To watch in landscape view, flip your device. To enter full-screen mode, double-tap the screen. Finally, if you can swipe up to get to your device, you’ll be able to continue watching your program with picture-in-picture (assuming your device has Android 8.0 or above). Aptos Token Price Prediction – Retail Dumped On By Crypto VCs? – Cryptonews https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/aptos-token-price-prediction-retail-dumped-on-by-crypto-vcs-cryptonews/ The Aptos (APT) price crashed on its listing day, as predicted by many of the best crypto traders on Twitter. Aptos token, dubbed a ‘Solana killer’ capable of a higher tps, is one of the most trending cryptocurrency assets and airdrops this week, on 15,170 watchlists on CoinMarketCap already having just been added today. Yesterday one of the most popular crypto influencers and UpOnly podcast host @cobie – who has 743,000 followers – criticized major cryptocurrency exchanges including FTX and Binance for listing Aptos ‘without any tokenomics transparency at all‘. Gainzy (@gainzy) tweeted to his 160,000 followers today: ‘Disastrous aptos launch. I weep for inexperienced discretionary traders. You’re the yield. We all know how this aptos launch ends. Retail gets rinsed, big firms hedge exposure, GCR shows a top short with 6M+ PnL. Just a matter of time. PoS Layer 1 blockchain Aptos attracted crypto venture capital investors including a16z and Jump Capital, with a $150 million series A round.  However ‘VC coins’ have come under increasing criticism this year for deep corrections once tradeable exchanges after reaching an over inflated FDV. U.S. Jury Acquits Russian On Charges He Lied To FBI Over ‘Steele Dossier’ – Reuters https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/u-s-jury-acquits-russian-on-charges-he-lied-to-fbi-over-steele-dossier-reuters/ WASHINGTON, Oct 18 (Reuters) – A Russian researcher who contributed explosive details to a document dubbed the “Steele dossier” that alleged ties between former U.S. President Donald Trump’s 2016 election campaign and Russia was acquitted by a jury on Tuesday on charges that he lied to the FBI about the sources of his information. Igor Danchenko’s acquittal in federal court in Washington dealt another blow to Special Counsel John Durham, who was appointed in 2019 by Trump-era Attorney General William Barr to investigate the FBI’s “Crossfire Hurricane” probe into whether members of Trump’s campaign had colluded with Russia. Jurors acquitted Danchenko on four charges. The judge in the case earlier had thrown out a fifth charge. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “While we are disappointed in the outcome, we respect the jury’s decision and thank them for their service,” Durham said in a statement. In another trial of a defendant charged by Durham, a jury in Washington in May acquitted Michael Sussmann, an attorney for Democrat Hillary Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign, of charges that he lied to the FBI when he passed along a later-discredited tip about possible communications between Trump’s business and a Russian bank. Danchenko, a Russian-born researcher who resides in Northern Virginia, was indicted by Durham’s office in 2021 on five counts of making false statements to FBI agents in 2017 about the sources of information he provided to former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele. His attorneys argued that the indictment was baseless, saying their client’s answers to the FBI’s often “ambiguous” questions were “literally” true and not material. For instance, Danchenko was accused of misleading the FBI by claiming he never “talked” to Charles Dolan, a Democratic operative and public relations executive, about anything in the Steele dossier, when in fact they had communicated in writing. U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga said last week he agreed with the defense, and he dismissed one of the five charges against Danchenko related to his communications with Dolan. The judge allowed the other four charges to be decided by the jury. Those charges accused Danchenko of lying to the FBI by claiming he had spoken to Sergei Millian, the former president of the Russian-American Chamber of Commerce, to gather information later used in the dossier. Danchenko’s lawyers maintained their client received an anonymous call from a person who Danchenko suspected was Millian, but he told agents he was not certain it was him. Steele was hired by a U.S.-based research firm called Fusion GPS, which in turn was retained by Sussmann’s law firm on behalf of Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee to dig up dirt on Trump. The dossier contained salacious details about Trump, many of which have never been substantiated. Trenga placed strict limits on what Durham’s team could present as evidence to the jury, including ruling that the scandalous allegations about “Donald Trump’s alleged sexual activity” in a Moscow hotel were off limits, finding they were not direct evidence and their relevancy was questionable. An investigation by the Justice Department’s inspector general later found that the FBI improperly continued to rely on unsubstantiated allegations in the Steele dossier when it applied for court-approved warrant applications to monitor the communications of Carter Page, a former Trump campaign adviser. A former FBI attorney, Kevin Clinesmith, was later prosecuted by Durham and pleaded guilty to falsifying a document used in the law enforcement agency’s warrant applications. Another special counsel, Robert Mueller, conducted an investigation that documented contacts between Trump’s campaign and Russians, but his final report concluded there was not enough evidence to establish that the campaign had engaged in a criminal conspiracy with Moscow. MacAdam: Marathon Debut Will Be No Sight-Seeing Tour For Udvadia The Daily Gazette

MacAdam: Marathon Debut Will Be No Sight-Seeing Tour For Udvadia – The Daily Gazette https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/macadam-marathon-debut-will-be-no-sight-seeing-tour-for-udvadia-the-daily-gazette/ “OK, let’s go, c’mon!” “Don’t you wanna look at the Grand Canyon?” Clark Griswold puts his arm around his wife Ellen, looks at the Grand Canyon for a moment, then hustles his family out of there in a classic quick scene from “Vacation.” Cara Udvadia will have a similar frame of mind on Oct. 30, and the venue will be the vast panoply of monuments and landmarks around Washington, D.C. Presumably, she won’t be on the run from the law like Clark Griswold was. But she won’t be dawdling to soak in the gravitas of Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial, the National Mall and the U.S. Capitol, either. The 25-year-old former star distance runner at Mohonasen High School and UAlbany is making the big jump to the marathon distance for the first time, and has given herself an ambitious but attainable finish goal of 2:50 at the 47th Marine Corps Marathon. The UAlbany record holder in the 10,000 meters who won the MVP Health Care Stockade-athon 15k last year and in 2019 has visited D.C. just once, on a family vacation when she was in middle school. She’s looking forward to a marathon debut in which her wristwatch won’t be the only source of engagement. “It’s a pretty cool spot. I think it’ll hopefully help take my mind off the pain at some point,” she said with a laugh during a phone interview last Thursday. Udvadia, who married former UAlbany teammate Ryan Udvadia this year and works as a hydrologist for the U.S. Geological Survey, has been training for the Marine Corps Marathon for four months while coached by her father, Mohonasen cross country coach Bill Sherman. Cara believes she’s well-equipped for Oct. 30 based on how her overall training has progressed, which has included a long run of 22 miles five weeks ago and another 22-miler the second week of October. The first one was a valuable revelation; the recent one went much better. “That’s probably the first time throughout this training block that really opened my eyes to how challenging the marathon can be,” she said. “And I wasn’t having a great day. I knew from the start of that run, I don’t know what it was, but I was feeling a little bit tired. “It was a huge mental challenge from about 15 miles on. I was really struggling. I had Ryan on the bike with me. He was super-supportive, and that helped, for sure. I don’t know if I could’ve made it through without him.” “I told her, I remember when I was preparing for my first marathon, they always say the halfway point of that 26-mile race is the 20-mile mark,” said Bill Sherman, who has run nine marathons. “And it’s true. I was like, that’s a bunch of baloney, and I ran it and was like, ‘Oh, my goodness.’ “She had a 20-miler a few weeks before and she said Dad I felt great, I’m ready, I think I could’ve done 26.’ She went to 22 and was like, ‘I think I understand what you were talking about at the halfway point.’” To hit her target time, Udvadia will have to maintain a 6:29 mile pace. She posted the same time, 54:24, in her two Stockade-athon victories, which is a 5:51 pace for 9.3 miles, and in some shorter races this year, she has run sub-6:00 pace in the Firecracker 4 (23:33 for four miles) and Malta 10k (36:28) on Sept. 10. To get a taste of a race longer than the Stockade-athon, Udvadia ran the Helderberg-to-Hudson Half Marathon in April, and won it in 1:17:01, a 5:53 pace, before she had begun her serious training block for the Marine Corps. “I always knew that I would eventually move up [in distance],” she said. “After I finished running competitively in college last year, I felt like I needed some time to catch my breath and took a little down time and then spent some time road racing. This year, I felt like I was ready to make the jump. “I decided to take it kind of slow and started with a half marathon with the mindset that that would be setting me up for a fall marathon. It was a good experience. It was tough, jumping up in distance.” The popular Capital Region 26.2-miler, the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon on Oct. 9, was a logical spot for her debut, but Udvadia chose to get out of town, and there is some family history at the D.C. race, too. Ryan, who is also in good shape and will race Marine Corps, had run it with his grandfather. “I really wanted to do one that was not in the area for my first one,” Cara said. “A marathon’s a long distance, and doing it in a familiar area, I didn’t want to get bored, if that makes sense. “I wanted to also race some new people and challenge myself with that. Ryan told me good things about it. I wanted to look for something that would definitely push me, and other women to run with was really important to me. Looking at the past results, it definitely fit the bill. It looked like I would be in the mix, but definitely by no means the fastest. I felt like that would be a good way to push myself.” The women’s winner at Marine Corps typically runs in the 2:40s, and former Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake star Sam Roecker won the MHR Marathon in 2:52:17. The Marine Corps Marathon starts and finishes in Arlington, Virginia, crosses two bridges over the Potomac River and passes many of the iconic tourist sights in Washington. The course is mostly flat, but has some uphill in the early miles and another hill that begins a gentle ascent at the Mile 21 mark and gets steeper in Mile 23. The learning process is two-fold for Udvadia this year, how to train for a marathon, and how to race one. “That’s funny,” she said, when told that her father described her target time as “aggressive.” “It’s hard for me to say. Obviously, I never ran a marathon before, and I don’t want to underestimate it, because I know it’s going to be extremely challenging. “But I think it’s very do-able if I run smart in the beginning and don’t go out too fast. I know he thinks it’s more aggressive than I probably do, but he’s also more experienced with marathoning than I am, so I definitely learned some lessons during training, doing long runs past where I’ve gone before. It made me realize that it’ll be harder than I expect, probably, so it’s good to go in prepared for that.” “Her training has been going really well, and she seems really strong,” Bill Sherman said. “I think it’s a lot to manage when you’re all of a sudden working full-time.  “She’s got a pretty aggressive goal for this first one. I think it’s aggressive, and if she can do it, it’s going to be amazing. I have her at certain pacing for her tempo runs, and she says, ‘Dad, it feels so slow,’ but you’re doing 12 miles of tempo. All the pacing is based on her goal time. And it’s going well, but you don’t know until you step on the line and cross the finish line.” Balancing time-consuming marathon training with a full-time job is also part of the challenge for Udvadia. She and Ryan live in Clifton Park, and her work with the USGS occasionally requires travel to all corners of the state to collect water samples for lab analysis. “It’s also held me accountable to take a day off every week, which I usually follow that type of plan,” Cara said. “This has forced me to do that. When you work a 12-plus-hour day, it’s hard to find time to run, so if that happens once a week, it’s not a bad thing for my training, to be honest.” Udvadia said she’ll run the Stockade-athon again on Nov. 13 as long as it doesn’t present a risk of injury while she recovers from Marine Corps. She’s committed to her new distance, though, and, based on her training and affinity for longer distances, the Oct. 30 race will be anything but a sight-seeing opportunity. “I don’t want to jinx myself, but I’ve been able to hit the pace, no problem, in training, so I think when race day comes around, I’ll have been resting up a little bit the week before and my legs will probably feel better than they do on an average day, with the race atmosphere,” she said.. “I find that the first time I do a new workout or distance or a new race, it’s a lot more challenging the first time. I’m trying to keep that in mind for the first time I race the marathon, knowing it’s probably not going to go smoothly. “But I’ll have plenty more tries after this.” CATCHING UP WITH … … The Evans family. Shaun, Nichole, Shamus and Simon Evans had a book signing at The Open Door in Schenectady on Sept. 25, so I swung down there to pick up a copy of Shaun’s account of their cross-country adventure in 2015 in which he pushed Shamus in his jogging stroller 3,205 miles from Seattle to Pelham Bay in the Bronx. “Better Together” was a fun, inspiring read, not just for the remarkable feat by Shaun and Shamus, but the logistical challenges the entire family faced to not only make it happen, but to make it an impactful exercise in charity, awareness and inclusion. Along the way, they donated wheelchairs to disabled kids in 15 states as representatives of Ainsley’s Angels. Lebanon Approves Some Banking Law Changes Demanded By IMF – 69News WFMZ-TV https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/lebanon-approves-some-banking-law-changes-demanded-by-imf-69news-wfmz-tv/ BEIRUT (AP) — Lebanon’s parliament late Tuesday approved some amendments to a banking secrecy law that has been a key demand of the International Monetary Fund before it agrees to a bailout program amid the country’s economic meltdown. Despite the changes, legal advocacy groups say the alterations to the law will likely not be enough to please the IMF because it restricts moves to lift banking secrecy provisions to judicial authorities. The decades-old law is seen by many as a way to hide the widespread corruption that brought the small nation to bankruptcy over the past three years. “We agreed on a law to lift banking secrecy with some amendments where we widely expanded the number of groups that can ask to lift banking secrecy,” the head of parliament’s finance and budget committee, Ibrahim Kanaan, said in a tweet. “Negotiations with the International Monetary Fund have not stopped, and we have been in constant communication in the past days and hours so there won’t be flaws in the agreement that Lebanon aspires to.” Among the amendments is the authority to lift banking secrecy off accounts retroactively to 1988. Kanaan told local television station Al-Jadeed that some proposed amendments in line with the IMF’s critiques were voted out of the legislation during Tuesday’s session. Since Lebanon’s economic slide began in late 2019, three-quarters of the population of 6 million people, including 1 million Syrian refugees, plunged into poverty. The Lebanese pound has lost more than 90% of its value. The international community has been demanding major reforms in order to help the corruption-plagued nation. Talks between Lebanon’s government and the IMF began in May 2020 and reached a staff-level agreement in April. The Lebanese government has implemented few of the IMF’s demands from the agreement, which are mandatory before finalizing a bailout program. Among them are restructuring Lebanon’s ailing financial sector, implementing fiscal reforms, restructuring external public debt and putting in place strong anti-corruption and anti-money laundering measures. Lebanon defaulted in March 2020 on paying back its massive debt, worth at the time some $90 billion, or 170% of GDP, making it one of the highest in the world. A key demand by the IMF in a tentative agreement with cash-strapped Lebanon for a bailout has been to allow the country’s tax authority to lift banking secrecy. That demand was rejected by parliament’s financial committee, saying it threatens privacy by allowing some civil servants to look into bank accounts without orders from the judiciary. The IMF in September said previous amendments were not sufficient to upgrade the law to be able to reach international standards and best practices. Nizar Saghieh, an activist lawyer and the co-founder of Lebanese watchdog group Legal Agenda, told The Associated Press that the amended law does not address all of the IMF’s concerns, despite some “small steps” forward. “It’s obviously better than what we had in the past, which was very bad because we basically had total banking secrecy, but it doesn’t reach the standards we need,” he said. “It’s not up to par to what we need to respond to a crisis of this size.” A previous draft approved by parliament in late July did not lift banking secrecy in general and only limited some government institutions to lift it in case of investigating crimes. President Michel Aoun refused to sign the draft and sent it back to parliament for amendments. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Redhill Partners With Pixel Canvas To Enter The Metaverse – PR Week https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/redhill-partners-with-pixel-canvas-to-enter-the-metaverse-pr-week/ Redhill has announced they are taking their first steps into the metaverse by partnering with US-based Pixel Canvas—a photorealistic, browser-based 3D metaverse platform—with an aim to deliver interactive and immersive brand experiences and drive user engagement for clients and brands. Through the partnership, Redhill plans to leverage Pixel Canvas’s platform and technologies into brand campaigns and communications strategies. “Through our collaboration with Pixel Canvas, our metaverse offering is designed to help our clients understand and capitalise on this next massive wave disrupting businesses and industries and arming them with the strategies and technologies they need to fully capitalise on these new virtual worlds,” said Jacob Puthenparambil, founder and CEO of Redhill. With a background in 3D virtual event design for Fortune 500 companies like Verizon and WarnerMedia, Pixel Canvas uses a platform powered by Unreal Engine, a real-time 3D creation tool, to deliver its metaverse experiences. One of their most recent projects was Criteo Island, a 3D island created for a four-day virtual metaverse event that saw over 4,000 concurrent users worldwide playing virtual games. “Through our partnership with Redhill, our companies will be able to deliver best-in-class immersive experiences to transform how brands connect, collaborate, and communicate in a fully realised metaverse,” said Joey Lee, founder and CEO of Pixel Canvas. “With our photorealistic technology and gamified touchpoints, we can build deeply engaging experiences where users can interact with brands in entertaining ways, as well as where brands can use engagement data to inform sales and marketing strategies.” In addition to their latest metaverse venture, Redhill recently acquired Singapore-based Vision Strategy Storytelling (“VS Story”) in an effort to provide creative visual storytelling solutions centred around social impact and sustainability for the agency and its clients. And earlier this year, they also established a new creative technology and design unit—Redhill Studio—that offers creative design, video and podcast production, and website and web application development. Freddie Mercury’s Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow Is Heading To Auction For A Good Cause – Yahoo Life https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/freddie-mercurys-rolls-royce-silver-shadow-is-heading-to-auction-for-a-good-cause-yahoo-life/ In addition to his singular musical legacy, Freddie Mercury left behind a slew of prized cars. Now the first Rolls-Royce he ever owned is hitting the auction block, and all the proceeds are going toward a good cause.   RM Sotheby’s is offering up the singer’s 1974 Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow during a sale on November 5. The former Queen frontman was said to have owned the car from 1979 until his death in 1991 at age 45. After his passing, the Rolls-Royce was scooped up by his sister, Kashmira Cooke, and remained in her possession until 2013 when it was bought at auction. Next month, the ‘74 Shadow will cross the block again, but this time the money from the sale will benefit Superhumans Center, a charity that’s providing aid for Ukrainian war victims. The 1974 Silver Shadow was the first Rolls-Royce that Freddie Mercury ever owned “This car represents a serious piece of history and the fact that the proceeds of the sale will benefit the amazing Superhumans of Ukraine charity is wonderful,” says Nick Wiles, a car specialist at RM Sotheby’s. Despite never having a license, that didn’t stop Mercury from amassing quite the class car collection. In fact, the Silver Shadow is reportedly what he was often chauffeured in throughout his career and even where the band’s record label signing took place. There’s also a chord phone and cassette deck, which adds to its cool factor. Accompanying the Shadow is a history file to confirm its celeb status. In it, you’ll find past workshop invoices with Mercury’s name on them, along with a letter of authenticity from Beach. The auction kicks off on November 5, with a preview scheduled for November 4.
