A ground-breaking ceremony was held on Tuesday to mark the official start of construction for the new Steveston Community Centre and Branch Library. The $90-million project aims to design a three-storey building facility that is “innovative, sustainable, inclusive and a model of wellness.” According to the city, features will include: A community centre with a double gymnasium, fitness centre, active studio, and multipurpose and meeting rooms; Gathering spaces and a shared community living room; and A library with enhanced collections, children’s and youth spaces, educational program rooms and space for silent study. “This new facility has been a council priority that reflects the city’s commitment to building strong communities and the unique cultural and historical identity of Steveston,” said Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Richmond was recently named B.C.’s most active community, and through projects like this we can continue to bring people together in modern, environmentally-friendly facilities that support healthy lifestyles and active learning.” Brodie was joined by several council members along with Steveston Community Society president Alan Sakai and Richmond Public Library Board chair Jordan Oye. She was an avid football fan of the Cleveland Browns, not missing a single game. She adored her grandchildren and was a doting grandmother. The impact she made on those who knew her was perpetual. Janet is survived by her husband of 19 years, Dennis L. Thompson; her sister, Cheryl Giunto and family; her brother, Tony Cieslak; her sister, Christen Cieslak; her son, Jonathan Thompson; her daughter, Beth Skipper; her stepson, Benjamin Thompson; her stepdaughter, Gabrielle Moran; and her grandchildren, Camden Bartlett, Aubree Bartlett, Cheyenne Moran and Charlotte Moran; as well as many loving nieces and nephews. 100 Days Post-Roe: At Least 66 Clinics Across 15 US States Have Stopped Offering Abortion Care – Guttmacher Institute https://dentoncountynewsonline.com/100-days-post-roe-at-least-66-clinics-across-15-us-states-have-stopped-offering-abortion-care-guttmacher-institute/ October 2, 2022 marked 100 days since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a decision that has resulted in states across the nation severely restricting access to abortion. New Guttmacher research found that 100 days after the June 24 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, 66 clinics across 15 states have been forced to stop offering abortions. Prior to June 24, these 15 states had a total of 79 clinics that provided abortion care. As of October 2, that number had dropped to 13, and all of them are located in Georgia. This means there are no providers currently offering abortions in 14 of the 15 states. Among the 66 clinics where abortion is no longer available, 40 are still offering services other than abortion, while 26 have shut down entirely. Our analysis, which builds on research we conducted 30 days after Roe fell, focuses on the 15 states that were enforcing either total or six-week abortion bans as of October 2. While most of these bans include very limited circumstances when an abortion may be allowed, those exceptions are designed to be difficult to navigate and are often unusable in practice. States Where Clinics Stopped Offering Abortions or Closed Entirely In the 13 states that had implemented total abortion bans as of October 2, all clinics were forced to stop offering abortions. In the other two states, Wisconsin and Georgia, the situation is precarious. Clinics in Wisconsin have faced legal uncertainty around the state’s pre-Roe total abortion ban, leading providers in that state to stop offering abortions out of fear of future prosecution. In Georgia, which is enforcing a ban on abortion starting at six weeks of pregnancy, clinics have been affected by the shortened timeframe to offer abortion services. At the 40 clinics that have remained open for services other than abortion, our research did not ask about the scope of activities they are undertaking, but it may include providing other sexual and reproductive health services (e.g., prescribing birth control) or helping patients find abortion care in other states. However, 26 clinics have been forced to close their doors. When clinics close down or stop offering abortion care, it represents a lost source of health care for their community. Changes to Abortion Clinic Services Our research tracked the following changes to abortion services at clinics in 15 states as of October 2, 2022, compared with the situation right before Roe was overturned. The 14 states where abortion is currently unavailable accounted for 125,780 abortions in 2020. Individuals who can no longer obtain an abortion from a clinic in these states are now forced to travel to another state for abortion care (facing additional direct and indirect costs associated with travel logistics, child care and time off work), self-manage their abortion or continue their pregnancy (and accept the significant associated health risks). Likewise, 41,620 abortions were obtained in Georgia in 2020. Under the state’s six-week abortion ban, which prohibits abortion before many people even know they are pregnant, anyone needing an abortion faces an extremely limited time frame for scheduling and obtaining care. This means many people in Georgia will be left with the same options as people in states with total bans. Altogether, these 15 states are home to almost 22 million women of reproductive age (aged 15–49), in addition to other people who may not identify as women but are capable of becoming pregnant and may need an abortion. That means almost one-third (29%) of the total US population of women of reproductive age are living in states where abortion is either unavailable or severely restricted. Importantly, the loss of clinics is felt in all states—even those where abortion remains legal. Ample anecdotal evidence shows that abortion clinics in these states are being inundated with people from states with abortion bans seeking care. These dramatic increases in caseloads mean clinic capacity and staff are stretched to their limits, resulting in longer wait times for appointments even for residents of states where abortion remains legal. More Chaos, Confusion and Harm to Come Even before Roe was overturned, getting an abortion was difficult or outright impossible for many people, especially those who were already facing steep barriers to accessing health care, including people with low incomes, Black and Brown people, immigrants, young people, those with disabilities and rural populations. These inequities are likely to worsen as clinic-based abortion care disappears in many states, a number of them clustered in regions like the South. An already precarious abortion access landscape is likely to continue to deteriorate. Our state legislative tracking predicts that a total of 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion within a year of Roe being overturned. Already, several states—including Indiana, Ohio and South Carolina—had total or six-week abortion bans go into effect briefly before they were temporarily blocked in court. These bans could go into effect again as soon as the court cases are resolved. These disruptions to service provision—even when temporary—affect the ability of established providers to quickly resume abortion care. Further, rapidly changing laws may make it unclear to some patients whether they can legally seek an abortion in their state.  Much more research will need to be conducted to grasp the full extent of the chaos, confusion and harm that the US Supreme Court has unleashed on people needing abortions, but the picture that is starting to emerge should alarm anyone who supports reproductive freedom and the right to bodily autonomy. Methodology Starting September 20, we generated a list of clinics known to have provided abortion care in 2020 in the 17 states that implemented total or early gestational age abortion bans following the Supreme Court decision in June. We checked our list of 2020 facilities against other sources to remove clinics that had not been providing abortion care as of June 24, 2022. The number of states was adjusted based on changes in state laws and their implementation through October 2, including the removal of Indiana and Ohio after court action temporarily suspended their bans.  Between September 20 and October 2, we used multiple sources—including clinic websites, news stories, social media and information from colleague organizations—to track the status of abortion services. For each clinic, we determined if the facility was open or closed; if open, if it was providing abortions or other sexual and reproductive health care; and, if providing abortions, whether abortion care was available past six weeks’ gestation. In cases where online information was seemingly out of date (e.g., a clinic indicated it provided abortion care even though there was a state ban in effect), we conducted one or more mystery calls using the phone number listed on the clinic’s website. If a phone line was not answered after two or more calls during business hours, we considered the clinic to be closed. Data were imported into Stata17 to systematically count the number of clinics that had closed or had stopped providing abortions and were continuing to offer other services. We analyzed American Community Survey data from 2020 in Stata17 to calculate the number and percentage of women of reproductive age living in the 15 states we investigated. As part of what the fourth-year nuclear science and engineering (NSE) doctoral student labels her “teenage rebellious phase,” Trainer was quite convinced she would just be wasting the application fee were she to submit an application. She wasn’t even “super sure” she wanted to go to college. But a high-school friend was convinced Trainer would get into a “top school” if she only applied. A bet followed: If Trainer lost, she would have to apply to MIT. Trainer lost — and is glad she did. Growing up in Daytona Beach, Florida, good grades were Trainer’s thing. Seeing friends participate in interschool math competitions, Trainer decided she would tag along and soon found she loved them. She remembers being adept at reading the room: If teams were especially struggling over a problem, Trainer figured the answer had to be something easy, like zero or one. “The hardest problems would usually have the most goofball answers,” she laughs. Simulating neutron behavior As a doctoral student, hard problems in math, specifically computational reactor physics, continue to be Trainer’s forte. Her research, under the guidance of Professor Benoit Forget in MIT NSE’s Computational Reactor Physics Group (CRPG), focuses on modeling complicated neutron behavior in reactors. Simulation helps forecast the behavior of reactors before millions of dollars sink into development of a potentially uneconomical unit. Using simulations, Trainer can see “where the neutrons are going, how much heat is being produced, and how much power the reactor can generate.” Her research helps form the foundation for the next generation of nuclear power plants. To simulate neutron behavior inside of a nuclear reactor, you first need to know how neutrons will interact with the various materials inside the system. These neutrons can have wildly different energies, thereby making them susceptible to different physical phenomena. For the entirety of her graduate studies, Trainer has been primarily interested in the physics regarding slow-moving neutrons and their scattering behavior. When a slow neutron scatters off of a material, it can induce or cancel out molecular vibrations between the material’s atoms. The effect that material vibrations can have on neutron energies, and thereby on reactor behavior, has been heavily approximated over the years. Trainer is primarily interested in chipping away at these approximations by creating scattering data for materials that have historically been misrepresented and by exploring new techniques for preparing slow-neutron scattering data. Trainer remembers waiting for a simulation to complete in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, when she discovered a way to predict neutron behavior with limited input data. Traditionally, “people have to store large tables of what neutrons will do under specific circumstances,” she says. “I’m really happy about it because it’s this really cool method of sampling what your neutron does from very little information,” Trainer says. Amelia Trainer — Modeling complicated neutron behavior in nuclear reactors As part of her research, Trainer often works closely with two software packages: OpenMC and NJOY. OpenMC is a Monte Carlo neutron transport simulation code that was developed in the CRPG and is used to simulate neutron behavior in reactor systems. NJOY is a nuclear data processing tool, and is used to create, augment, and prepare material data that is fed into tools like OpenMC. By editing both these codes to her specifications, Trainer is able to observe the effect that “upstream” material data has on the “downstream” reactor calculations. Through this, she hopes to identify additional problems: approximations that could lead to a noticeable misrepresentation of the physics. A love of geometry and poetry Trainer discovered the coolness of science as a child. Her mother, who cares for indoor plants and runs multiple greenhouses, and her father, a blacksmith and farrier, who explored materials science through his craft, were self-taught inspirations. Trainer’s father urged his daughter to learn and pursue any topics that she found exciting and encouraged her to read poems from “Calvin and Hobbes” out loud when she struggled with a speech impediment in early childhood. Reading the same passages every day helped her memorize them. “The natural manifestation of that extended into [a love of] poetry,” Trainer says. A love of poetry, combined with Trainer’s propensity for fun, led her to compose an ode to pi as part of an MIT-sponsored event for alumni. “I was really only in it for the cupcake,” she laughs. MIT Matters: A Love Poem to Pi Computations and nuclear science After being accepted at MIT, Trainer knew she wanted to study in a field that would take her skills at the levels they were at — “my math skills were pretty underdeveloped in the grand scheme of things,” she says. An open-house weekend at MIT, where she met with faculty from the NSE department, and the opportunity to contribute to a discipline working toward clean energy, cemented Trainer’s decision to join NSE. As a high schooler, Trainer won a scholarship to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to learn computer coding and knew computational physics might be more aligned with her interests. After she joined MIT as an undergraduate student in 2014, she realized that the CRPG, with its focus on coding and modeling, might be a good fit. Fortunately, a graduate student from Forget’s team welcomed Trainer’s enthusiasm for research even as an undergraduate first-year. She has stayed with the lab ever since.  Research internships at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the creators of NJOY, have furthered Trainer’s enthusiasm for modeling and computational physics. She met a Los Alamos scientist after he presented a talk at MIT and it snowballed into a collaboration where she could work on parts of the NJOY code. “It became a really cool collaboration which led me into a deep dive into physics and data preparation techniques, which was just so fulfilling,” Trainer says. As for what’s next, Trainer was awarded the Rickover fellowship in nuclear engineering by the the Department of Energy’s Naval Reactors Division and will join the program in Pittsburgh after she graduates. For many years, Trainer’s cats, Jacques and Monster, have been a constant companion. “Neutrons, computers, and cats, that’s my personality,” she laughs. Work continues to fuel her passion. To borrow a favorite phrase from Spaceman Spiff, Trainer’s favorite “Calvin” avatar, Trainer’s approach to research has invariably been: “Another day, another mind-boggling adventure.”

The mayor, council, and staff hold a workshop to discuss details of revenues, expenditures, and projects for the upcoming year. The budget is presented at Public Hearings held in August and September each year for public input. This year, housing permits have been coming in at a steady rate. We expect this trend to carry into the new fiscal year. We will be using $100,000 out of the Crime Control Tax money to offset the cost of police protection provided by the Denton County Sheriff’s Office. We are increasing our town reserve fund to $1.4 million. On September 12th, the town council passed the budget for fiscal year 2022-2023. Their telltale fins pop up all about us—a pod of at least dozen. Our whale-watching boat, the Sea Lion, is one of a handful nearing them at a safe distance in the waters of the San Juan Islands nearly into Canada. “August and September are when we see them the most,” explains Haleigh Yang, a naturalist guide with San Juan Safaris. “The orcas like it here.” So do the visitors who board ferries at Anacortes to arrive in the San Juan Islands. They come to see the magnificent whales. They also enjoy the art galleries, wine cellars, theaters, spas, and many other attractions of this versatile destination. The islands receive more than a million visitors annually. Located northwest of Seattle, the San Juan Islands are a loose archipelago of more than 170 islands in the Salish Sea, loose because some islands are so small that they appear and disappear with the tide. They are the remains of a mountain range that connected Washington to Canada’s Vancouver Island. The temperature stays pleasantly cool most of the year, a primary reason—along with whale watching—the San Juan Islands are a popular destination for international travelers. Scenic beauty, fun and relaxation are as abundant as the many sea lions that sunbathe on the islands’ rocky shores. Ferry to Friday Harbor The big, white ferries, some holding as many as 140 cars, navigate from Anacortes and arrive at Friday Harbor, the largest town in this cluster of islands. People watch arrivals and departures from benches near the docks and the patios of restaurants, like the Downriggers. Sailing yachts dock alongside excursion boats and other watercraft.  From the harbor area, gift boutiques, clothing stores and coffee shops fan across a hill that rises from the waterfront. Casual dining eateries, such as Cynthia’s and the Market Chef Deli, use island-grown vegetables and meats. San Juan Island Brewing Company serves locally made ales and lagers, along with pizzas, and is packed to the rafters on trivia night. The restaurant at Friday Harbor House treats guests to an elegant dinner and a supreme harbor view. Wall murals and sculptures sprinkled throughout town display the town’s embrace of a vibrant cultural lifestyle. Theaters and performing arts venues flank bookstores and art galleries. The San Juan Islands are deemed an “arts hot spot” by the Washington State Arts Commission because of the high number of galleries, working artists and art dealers. The San Juan Islands Museum of Art hosts exhibitions of paintings, drawing, sculpture and photography by regional, national and international artists. The Arctic Raven Gallery specializes in Arctic and Northwest Coast Native art, particularly cedar wood carvings, baskets, totem poles and stone carvings. The Whale Museum illuminates interesting facts about the big creatures. Orcas feed in the salmon-rich waters of the surrounding Salish Sea, as do minke whales and humpback whales, porpoise, seals and sea lions. Two types of orcas are seen in the saltwater: resident orcas that live here year-round and orcas that pass through during their migrations. Three pods with about 75 orca whales inhabit the waters of San Juan Islands. Getting around San Juan Island San Juan Island begs exploration. The island is about 14 miles long and 6 miles wide. The San Juan Islands Scenic Byway threads through rolling pastures and forests of cedar and fir. Islanders are dedicated to preserving their beloved open spaces, and they put conservation-focused, land-use planning into place. In this nature-blessed environment, people pursue bicycle riding, hiking, sea kayaking and wildlife watching, and enjoy the pleasures of rural living. The San Juan Vineyard hosts a tasting room in a bucolic setting complete with grape arbors and a picture postcard-perfect white church. Afterglow Rose is the best-selling wine among a substantial list of offerings to be sipped on the garden patio. Tastings are also available at the San Juan Distillery. It offers a wide selection of ciders, brandies and gins. The Palindaba Lavender Farm, a sea of light purple with a scent that mellows the soul, is open to visitors. Visitors can tour the farm’s lavender distillery. A shop sells all things lavender, from soap to chocolate. The 40-acre Krystal Acres Alpaca Farm welcomes guests wishing to learn about its hairy herd and shop for luxury clothing and accessories. Westcott Bay Shell Company, a working farm that grows oysters, clams and mussels, accommodates those who want their meals prepared on the spot. Tables overlook the cultivated tidelands. For travelers looking for lighthouses, they will find a white beacon by following Cattle Point Road to the southern tip of the island. This beach is also a prime view area for bald eagles and many migratory birds. At Lime Kiln Point State Park on the island’s west side, a 38-foot octagonal lighthouse rises from the rocky point overlooking Haro Strait. The loudest sound is the rhythmic hush of waves. People gather on the driftwood-strewn beaches to watch for whales. Also, they hike the trails laced through the 36-acre state park, including one that leads to the long-abandoned lime kiln. The Only Casualty Was a Pig The San Juan National Historical Park has ties to an unusual incident. British and American troops almost fought a war because a farmer killed a pig for invading his garden. The Pig War, actually a dispute about who owned the San Juan Islands, lasted from 1859 to 1871 and eventually determined the American sovereignty of the San Juan Islands. The American Camp at the island’s south end showcases several wood-framed buildings, an earthen fortress, and magnificent, windswept views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Dark amber prairies blanket the hills leading to South Beach, the longest public beach in the San Juan Islands. In the island’s north region, the British Camp features a blockhouse, restored formal English garden and parade ground. A short hiking trail loops through woods and alongside Garrison Bay. Roche Harbor Resort Near the top of San Juan Island, the village of Roche Harbor is a world unto itself. In the resort community, pastel-colored houses rests on a small hill. The historic Hotel De Haro, three restaurants, shops and spa surround the main pier. Madrona Bar and Grill is an ideal place to watch the activities of the harbor: kayakers preparing for saltwater adventures and yachtsmen readying for departure. Kayakers appreciate the quiet bays where they often glimpse otters and harbor seals. Sailors consider the San Juan Islands to be among the world’s best cruising waters. The resort adjoins the 20-acre San Juan Islands Sculpture Park, a meadow and woodland with more than 125 artworks by Northwest artists. More Islands Just a Ferry Ride Away San Juan Island is the most-visited island in the archipelago; however, two other islands claim a good share of visitors. Those islands are lightly settled and blessed with natural beauty, comfortable accommodations and cultural attractions.  Horseshoe-shaped Orcas Island is the largest. The 5,424-acre Moran State Park is a hiker’s heaven with 30 miles of trails. A stone observation tower sits atop Mount Constitution allowing for views of Mount Baker, Mount Rainier and the Canadian Gulf Islands. The tower is one of 20 buildings constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and 1940s. An 8-mile trail network extends across the Turtleback Mountain Preserve, where hikers wander through woodlands, grasslands and wetlands. The beauty of the landscape inspires artists in the hamlet of Olga. Orcas Island Artworks, a cooperative, sells the wares of more than 45 local artists. Bicycle riders love Lopez Island because it has few hills. The 15-mile-long island appeals to hikers and golfers, as well. The Lopez Island Vineyards serves its fine wines at a tasting room in Lopez Village. Nearby are a fine arts gallery, bakery, historical museum, shops, restaurants and lodging. Its goals include promoting exercise, improving food access and affordability and decreasing obesity for both adults and children. Obesity affects more than one in six children in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Jamie Bussel, senior program officer with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said obesity rates rose during the pandemic because kids often couldn’t get outside during normal school hours. Many families also faced economic constraints that limited nutrition. “With resources being stretched ever thinner these days, many families are forced to prioritize things like paying rent over putting healthy food on the table,” Bussel said. Obesity statistics show the Mountain West fares better than the rest of the country. Utah and Colorado have some of the lowest childhood obesity rates among all states, and every state in the Mountain West is better than average when it comes to adult weight statistics. Bussel said people tend to be more active in the region, and that certain states have prioritized access to healthy meals in their policies. Living at altitude has also been associated with lower obesity rates. Still, Bussel says all states can do more to reduce inequality, increase food assistance and school meal funding, and support physical exercise. Lower-income families and communities of color are disproportionately affected by obesity, according to the CDC. Excess weight increases the risks of diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. It can also limit respiratory function and affect memory. “In many ways, you have the pandemic and the epidemic of childhood obesity really reinforcing one another,” Bussel said. “Made worse because unhealthy food is cheap.” Biden’s conference on health and nutrition was the first held by the White House since 1969. His plan aims to end hunger nationwide by 2030. The highly competitive meet included schools from Division III as well as Division I. The Brewers stepped up to meet their competition, with many runners earning personal bests. Leading the pack was senior Miles Takiguchi ’23, who ran a program record 24:22.0, good for 12th place overall in the Brown race. Vassar’s next finisher was Aidan Mayer ’24, who ran a gutsy race, crossing the line in 25:52.2. Junior Andrew Blackburn ’24 cranked out a lifetime personal best of 25:59.4, and rookie Davis Anderson ’26 pulled out an impressive 26:02.6. Jose Magana ’25 had a strong debut 8k with a time of 26:14.8, and first-year Charlie Brodkin ’26 broke 30 minutes for the first time in his career with a personal best of 28:53.5. The team finished 29th of 45 teams in the Brown Race, and will next head to New London, CT, for the Connecticut College Invitational on Oct. 15. Women’s Cross Country | Sept. 30 | Paul Short Invitational The women’s cross country team went down to Bethlehem, PA, this past Saturday to face off against some of the best teams in the country, including teams from both Division I and Division III at the Paul Short Invitational. The Brewers finished 24th out of 46 teams in the highly competitive field, and had some incredibly strong performances from individuals as well. Augusta Stockman ’23 ran a personal best time of 22:02.9, the fourth fastest time in program history, and placed 38th overall in the Brown race. Not too far behind her was the duo of Clara Wiesler ’24 and Noni Pattington ’25, who finished back-to-back in times of 22:52.1 and 22:52.9 respectively. Annika Mueller-Hickler ’26 had a strong day, running a 23:30.5 to round out the scoring five. Amaavi Miriyagalla ’24 also ran a big lifetime best of 24:24.1, finishing seventh among the Brewers. Next up for Vassar is the Connecticut College Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 15. Field Hockey | Oct. 1-4 | 1-1 The Vassar Field Hockey team split its two games this week, losing a close 1-0 game to Ithaca on Oct. 1 and winning a double overtime thriller by a score of 2-1 against #20 SUNY Cortland on Oct. 4. Against Ithaca, the Brewers battled the whole way through the game, playing strong defense and getting some good chances but never quite getting one in the net. The game stayed deadlocked at 0-0 for well over three quarters until Ithaca scored a goal with 1:38 remaining, handing Vassar a heartbreaking defeat. The Brewers quickly rebounded with a huge win over 20th-ranked SUNY Cortland just a few days later on Oct. 4. After a scoreless first quarter, Vassar got on the board first with a goal from Maggie Werner ’24 early in the second quarter. The Brewers once again played strong defense throughout the match and were able to keep Cortland off the board deep into the fourth quarter. But with under four minutes to go, the Red Dragons finally scored to tie things up and eventually send the game into overtime. Goalie Sarah Dumaresq ’24 kept Cortland at one goal with some big saves in the first overtime period. After having some chances of their own in overtime, Vassar finally pulled through with the game winner from Leilani Llamas ’25 in the second overtime period. With the win, Vassar improves to 7-3 on the season. Next up for the Brewers is their Senior Day matchup against Union College on Saturday, Oct. 8. Men’s Soccer | Oct. 1 | W 1-0 This past Saturday, Oct. 1, the men’s soccer team stayed undefeated in Liberty League play with its 1-0 win over Union College. The Brewer’s got some early chances, but were finally able to cash in in the 26th minute, when senior Ryan Lane ’23 headed the ball into the net. Strong defense kept Union off the board heading into halftime. In the second half, the Brewers had some more great chances, but just weren’t able to convert any into goals. Union had some great chances of their own, but along with solid defense, goalkeeper Eric Wnorowski ’23 was able to keep Union off the board. The win improved Vassar’s record to 7-3 on the season, including 3-0 in league play. Next up for the Brewers is a matchup against Skidmore in Saratoga Springs, NY, on Saturday, Oct. 8.

According to a spokeswoman, the parent company for CHI, Common Spirit Health, was the victim of a security incident that appears to affect the organization’s computer systems across the country. On Wednesday, 3 News Now received an email from a CHI patient who showed up for their scheduled blood test and was turned away. The patient says the staff was unable to look up their medical records and they were not notified ahead of showing up that they would not be seen. The situation, says the patient, is frustrating. A CHI employee tells 3 News Now that when patients walk in, staff essentially don’t know why the patient is there. They added that everyone has to fill out a hard copy of their patient information forms. “Another really big impact for us has been virtual visits where patients actually connect through there. We connect through the electronic health records system,” the CHI employee said over Zoom. “So if a patient doesn’t have our scheduling phone number to our program, then we are not able to do those visits at all. So we don’t know. Those patients are being left in the dark essentially if they connect and we are not there.” Another individual said they have no access to patient information and reminder calls for appointments are not happening either. They said they get updates every two hours and, right now, there is not an estimated time of restoration. There were several patients coming and going from one of the clinics on Wednesday and we spoke to a couple who were turned away after requesting an X-ray. They now have to go to the emergency room. 3 News Now reached out to CHI again to find out who is being impacted, what appointments are impacted, and how the healthcare system is currently handling patient care and information. (AP) — A California man who lost his home in a wildfire last month has sued a wood products company at the center of the blaze, accusing it of failing to address the risk of a fire starting on its property. The fire started near the Roseburg Forest Products Co. mill on Sept. 2 in the small town of Weed near the California-Oregon border. It eventually burned more than six square miles (15.5 square kilometers), destroyed 118 buildings and killed two people. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is still investigating the cause of the fire. The mill produces its own electricity from wood remnants, a process that produces hot ash that is then sprayed with water from a machine. The company says it is investigating whether that machine, which it says is supplied by a third-party, failed to cool the ash enough, which could have started the fire. Tuesday, lawyers for 61-year-old Robert Davies sued the company, saying it did not make sure the machine was adequately designed, inspected and maintained — making the shed where the ashes were stored “a tinderbox awaiting a spark.” Instead of fixing the machine, the lawsuit says the company relied on its employees to put out fires, resulting in “a number of unreported fires at the facility.” “It begs the question, what was done from a safety standpoint to be able to address these fires that had occurred by using the correct technology and systems that would not rely solely on humans to be able to intervene,” Frank Pitre, one of Davies’ lawyers, said during a press conference on Wednesday. A spokesperson for the company declined to comment. The company has set aside $50 million to support victims of the fire, and so far it has compensated more than 300 people. That included Davies, who received $5,000. The lawsuit says this wasn’t enough to compensate him for the loss of his home of over 30 years and everything inside it. Pitre said he doesn’t believe the fire was a freak accident, saying multiple fires occurred on the site leading up to the blaze, known as the Mill Fire, which began on Sept. 2. He added the area was notorious for high winds during certain parts of the year. Terry Anderlini, another lawyer representing Davies, said Wednesday that the fire should never have happened. “We’re here to bring this forward and get to the truth of the matter,” Anderlini said. Warmer temperatures and drier conditions as a result of climate change have sped up the cadence of wildfires in Western states, scientists say. Wildfires have devastated communities in California, which, in the last five years, has seen the largest and most destructive fires in history. The Mill Fire started less than a quarter mile (0.3 kilometers) from the Weed City Fire Department and burned for 11 days. It prompted Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency in Siskiyou County and resulted in federal grant money to fight the blaze and support residents. Davies, who previously worked for an engineering company that contracted with the U.S. military, said he was in his home with his 25-year-old son when the fire started. After hearing helicopters flying from above, Davies walked outside and saw smoke coming over a hill. Within less than an hour, the smoke reached his house, he said. Davies and his son left their home with laundry baskets and clothes. Among the items left behind in Davies’ house were Disney collectibles he planned to will to his 36-year-old daughter. Davies said his family moved to the house in the mountains at least in part to avoid crime in larger cities. “In a way, it was kind of like a fairytale,” Davies said. “We never had to worry. Design Population based prospective cohort study. Setting The Nurses’ Health Study II (NHSII) and the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS I and II) in the United States. Participants 19 958 mother-child (45% boys, aged 7-17 years at study enrollment) pairs with a median follow-up of 4 years (interquartile range 2-5 years) until age 18 or the onset of overweight or obesity, including a subsample of 2925 mother-child pairs with information on peripregnancy diet. Main outcome measures Multivariable adjusted, log binomial models with generalized estimating equations and an exchangeable correlation structure were used to account for correlations between siblings and to estimate the relative risk of offspring overweight or obesity defined by the International Obesity Task Force. Results 2471 (12.4%) offspring developed overweight or obesity in the full analytic cohort. After adjusting for established maternal risk factors and offspring’s ultra-processed food intake, physical activity, and sedentary time, maternal consumption of ultra-processed foods during the child rearing period was associated with overweight or obesity in offspring, with a 26% higher risk in the group with the highest maternal ultra-processed food consumption (group 5) versus the lowest consumption group (group 1; relative risk 1.26, 95% confidence interval 1.08 to 1.47, P for trend0.001). In the subsample with information on peripregnancy diet, while rates were higher, peripregnancy ultra-processed food intake was not significantly associated with an increased risk of offspring overweight or obesity (n=845 (28.9%); group 5 v group 1: relative risk 1.17, 95% confidence interval 0.89 to 1.53, P fortrend=0.07). These associations were not modified by age, sex, birth weight, and gestational age of offspring or maternal body weight. Conclusions Maternal consumption of ultra-processed food during the child rearing period was associated with an increased risk of overweight or obesity in offspring, independent of maternal and offspring lifestyle risk factors. Further study is needed to confirm these findings and to understand the underlying biological mechanisms and environmental determinants. These data support the importance of refining dietary recommendations and the development of programs to improve nutrition for women of reproductive age to promote offspring health. Introduction Childhood obesity is rising at alarming rates in the United States.12 According to the National Center for Health Statistics and National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and severe obesity among children and young people aged 2-19 years have increased from 10.2%, 5.2%, and 1.0% in 1971-74 to 16.1%, 19.3%, and 6.1% in 2017-18, respectively.1 Childhood obesity increases the risk of major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease,3 diabetes, and cancers,4 and premature death.5 One of the potential contributors to the obesity epidemic among children and young people is the unhealthy Western style diet characterized by increased consumption of ultra-processed foods, which constitutes more than half of all energy intake among young people and adults in the US.67 Ultra-processed foods are extremely palatable, energy dense, convenient, and shelf stable products made from refined and inexpensive ingredients using a series of industrial processes.8 Ultra-processed foods contain various types of additives, including stabilizers, artificial flavors, and artificial colors, and contain little, if any, whole food ingredients.89 Further, ultra-processed foods generally have higher sugar, sodium, and saturated fat content compared with less processed foods.89 Consistent evidence has linked ultra-processed food intake to excess body fat, overweight, and obesity in adults101112 and children.1314 Because the development of obesity can be attributed to the combined influence of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors,15 maternal diet might influence offspring’s predisposition to obesity and diet choice.161718 While Strohmaier and colleagues and Chen and colleagues have linked a healthy pregnancy diet to a reduced risk of obesity in children,1718 Dhana and colleagues showed that a healthier maternal lifestyle during offspring’s childhood and adolescence was associated with lower obesity risk in offspring.16 However, the specific impact of maternal ultra-processed food consumption during these two critical periods on offspring’s body weight remains unknown. We used cohorts of mother-child pairs to test our hypothesis that maternal intake of ultra-processed food during offspring childhood and adolescence (that is, child rearing period) was positively associated with the risk of incident overweight or obesity in offspring at age 7-18 years. We then analyzed the association between consumption of ultra-processed food during peripregnancy and offspring risk of overweight or obesity. Understanding these associations might help advance dietary recommendations and inspire actionable policies to improve maternal and offspring health. Methods Study population We included longitudinal data from mothers and their offspring who participated in the Nurses’ Health Study II (NHS II) and the Growing Up Today Study (GUTS I and II), respectively. The NHS II enrolled 116 429 female registered nurses aged 25-42 years when established in 1989, with questionnaires mailed biennially to gain information on relevant medical history and risk factors.19 From 1991, a validated semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire was also mailed every four years.20 The GUTS I cohort was established in 1996 when 16 882 children (aged 8-15 years) of NHS II participants completed the initial questionnaire on health and lifestyle and were followed up every year between 1997 and 2001, and biennially thereafter. In 2004, 10 918 children (aged 7-17 years) of NHS II participants joined the extended GUTS II cohort and were followed up in 2006, 2008, and 2011, and biennially thereafter. The study was approved by the Committees on the Use of Human Subjects in Research at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Voluntarily returning the self-administered questionnaire was considered informed consent in both cohorts. Participants A total of 18 920 mothers and 27 783 children were matched between NHS II and two GUTS cohorts and were eligible for our study (fig 1). We excluded mother-child pairs with implausible maternal energy intake (600 kcal/day or 3500 kcal/day, 411 mothers to 559 children) and pregnancy during follow-up (846 mothers, 1220 children). Additionally, we excluded mother-child pairs when children had missing baseline height and weight, or when they were overweight or had obesity at baseline (3110 mothers, 6046 children). The final analytic cohort included 19 958 children born to 14 553 mothers. You’ve heard me talk about for four years now on what I pride myself on as far as being a starting pitcher, and that’s definitely eating as many innings as I can. I feel like that 200 mark is a big one for starting pitching, especially nowadays.” Indeed, in the modern game pitchers need to go max effort to navigate lineups because unlike earlier eras, hitters one through nine can take you deep at any time. At the same time teams are less willing to let pitchers face the lineup the third time through. The result has been fewer and fewer 200 inning seasons since the Diamondbacks came into the league 24 years ago in 1998. That year there were 52 such seasons in MLB. Last year there were four.  Coming into play today there were just five pitchers who had already reached 200 innings in 2022. Two pitchers crossed that threshold in this game. He gave up a single to Willy Adames, but then got the next two batters, using 20 pitches to get through the inning. He needed 18 more pitches in the second inning, working around a one out walk and a stolen base.  Kelly was more efficient in the third and fourth innings, needing just 23 pitches to retire all six batters. Kelly’s final line was was Six innings, four hits, 1 earned run, two walks and seven K’s. He finishes the year 13-8, 3.37 ERA. He led the team in starts with 33 and innings with 200.1, earning the nickname “The Mainstay”.  The offense started slowly today thanks to Burnes electric stuff dominating the first three innings. He didn’t allow a baserunner while striking out five. Burnes 243 strikeouts led the National League in 2022. But Craig Counsel pulled him after three innings and went to the bullpen.  The D-backs immediately pounced on reliever Aaron Ashby. Pavin Smith singled with one out and advanced to second on a fielding error by the left fielder. One out later Christian Walker singled him home for his 94th RBI of the season.  Josh Rojas doubled to the wall in right center but Walker was thrown out at home trying to score on a great relay throw from Adames.  The D-backs had a runner in scoring position in each of the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings but failed to score. It looked like those missed opportunities would come back to haunt when Sean Poppen gave up a go ahead solo homer to Rowdy Tellez in the eighth, breaking the 1-1 tie. Poppen had come in when Caleb Smith had to exit with a left elbow injury with two outs. After the game Torey Lovullo said Smith would receive imaging tomorrow. Smith had become a very effective long man out of the bullpen and it would be a big loss for the team’s 2023 plans if he were to require surgery.  Despite that setback, the D-backs would not be denied. Walker lead off with a single, his third hit of the game. Josh Rojas then came up and launched his ninth homer of the year for the 3-2 lead. Corbin Carroll went yard next, upping the lead to 4-2. Kevin Ginkel closed out the win with a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year. The talks follow a rare request for emergency aid last week from the Havana government after Cuba suffered an islandwide loss of electricity, floods and extensive damage after its western third took a direct hit from Ian as it made its way toward Florida. Neither side has specified what kind of aid is being discussed. The State Department official spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive diplomatic efforts. But the talks mark a new stage in sporadic efforts to communicate following President Donald Trump’s rollback of the normalization of ties that began in 2015, when Barack Obama renewed U.S. diplomatic relations with Havana’s communist government more than five decades after they were severed. President Biden campaigned on a pledge to relax the renewed sanctions and isolation of Cuba imposed by Trump, who also reinstated Cuba’s U.S. designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. Biden’s administration has made only minor adjustments to the relationship, however, including allowing increases in the number of commercial U.S. flights to the island, loosening restrictions on sending remittances to family members by Cuban Americans, and permitting certain categories of U.S. citizen to travel there. Recently, the administration reversed an earlier refusal to issue a Treasury Department license to a Maryland-based producer of electric scooters and bicycles to privately owned companies in Cuba. The license was granted under an exception to existing trade restrictions for reasons relating to environmental quality. Cuba’s appeal for humanitarian assistance comes as the island — even before the storm and a deadly fire that struck a large Cuban oil storage facility in August — has struggled with a major economic crisis, including shortages of food and fuel. Last week brought the first significant street protests, in the capital and other cities, since major anti-government demonstrations were put down with a violent security response in July 2021. Last week’s protests appeared in large part to be a response to the islandwide blackout and general economic strife, although chants of “freedom” were also heard. The demonstrations have reportedly died down as power has been restored to some areas, although frequent blackouts continue to occur. There are also sporadic cuts to internet service, variously blamed by Cubans on the electricity problem and possible government intervention. Physical proximity, with only 90 miles separating the two countries, has meant that any hurricane affecting Cuba is likely also to take aim at the United States. Havana has rebuffed U.S. offers of assistance following previous major storms. In 2005, the United States rejected a Cuban offer to send physicians to New Orleans to assist in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. The Biden administration offered unspecified technical assistance following an August fire sparked by lightning at a fuel storage facility in the city of Matanzas, east of Havana. The massive blaze continued for days and added to overall fuel shortages on the island. The Cuban government said it was grateful but did not follow up on the offer beyond the reported acceptance of some firefighting equipment. The two government have also held talks related to the record number of Cubans seeking admission to the United States across the Mexican border.
