‘We’re All Dispersed.’ Migrants Sent To Martha’s Vineyard Have Now Settled Throughout Eastern Mass. – The Boston Globe https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/were-all-dispersed-migrants-sent-to-marthas-vineyard-have-now-settled-throughout-eastern-mass-the-boston-globe/ They left Venezuela months ago and traversed Central America on bus, train, and foot. Then, famously, they flew to Martha’s Vineyard on private planes and ferried to the mainland to stay, for a time, on a military base. Now, the Martha’s Vineyard migrants are achieving some semblance of stability, or at least striving to do so. Forty-seven of the them have found housing in Massachusetts — in Lowell, Brockton, Stoughton, Provincetown, and other towns on Cape Cod, according to Iván Espinoza-Madrigal, the head of Lawyers for Civil Rights. Four have even returned to Martha’s Vineyard, where the group first landed on Sept. 14, according to Rachel Self, a lawyer on the island who has assisted the migrants since their arrival. (Two of the 49 migrants have moved to New York.) Meanwhile, their prospects for remaining in the United States long term have received a boost from a Texas law enforcement official. Last week, the Bexar County sheriff in San Antonio certified that the migrants originally taken to the Vineyard are legally victims of a crime who are assisting a law enforcement investigation, according to Self, who said she traveled to Texas to complete the certification process. The sheriff’s office said the case is being investigated “as possible unlawful restraint.” The alleged criminal act stems from an unusual operation in which a Florida woman reportedly lured the migrants onto the flights with false promises about the destination and the benefits the migrants would receive there. The woman — sources say the sheriff has identified her as Perla Huerta, a former Army counterintelligence agent — was apparently working on behalf of the administration of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who has claimed credit for the operation. The recruitment of the migrants occurred in San Antonio and the sheriff’s office said that only people who were in the area at the time of the alleged deception are considered suspects. The certifications should enable the migrants to apply for “U visas” with the federal government. The visas are a special designation for victims of certain crimes who provide useful information to investigators, according to a spokesperson for the US Citizenship and Immigration Services. For Self, the certifications serve a dual purpose. First, they will facilitate the sheriff’s ongoing investigation. Second, they should protect the migrants from deportation — especially if they remain in Massachusetts. Since departing Joint Base Cape Cod during the last week of September and first days of October, the migrants have, for the most part, settled in temporary apartments and homeless shelters. Families traveling with children were the first to leave the base, according to Carlos, a migrant who didn’t want his last name published due to his ongoing immigration proceedings. They received housing through a state program, said Susan Church, a lawyer who represents a family that moved into a state-provided apartment in Lowell. Three brothers have moved to Provincetown and two siblings as well as two others have returned to Martha’s Vineyard, Self said. Some men traveling alone and couples without children have received free housing in South Shore homeless shelters, according to Espinoza-Madrigal, whose organization is representing the migrants in a class-action lawsuit against DeSantis and other defendants. “We’re all dispersed,” one migrant said on condition of anonymity due to ongoing immigration proceedings. Self said that now that she has the certifications from the Texas sheriff in hand, the migrants can individually apply for U visas with the help of their pro bono immigration attorneys. The process promises to be long, she cautioned. “It’s not a quick fix,” she said, “and [the outcome] is not guaranteed.” But the U visa process does provide a plausible path for the migrants to obtain work authorization and, eventually, green cards, Espinoza-Madrigal said. The application process also serves as a kind of shield against deportation, especially if the migrants remain within the jurisdiction of the First Circuit Court of Appeals, which includes Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Puerto Rico. That’s because of a legal precedent set just last year. In a lawsuit brought by a man with a pending U visa application, the court of appeals found that the government “abused its discretion” when it moved to reopen proceedings to deport the man. Self said the decision would help protect any Martha’s Vineyard migrants who apply for U visas and reside within the boundaries of the first circuit. “The perpetrators of these crimes,” she said, referring to the suspects in the sheriff’s investigation, “have ironically ensured that these people will be able to remain in the United States while their cases are pending.” (No one has been charged with a crime in connection with the Martha’s Vineyard flights.) Espinoza-Madrigal said that even if migrants leave the jurisdiction of the first circuit, a pending U visa application would still confer protection. “It would be extraordinarily unusual for immigration officials to effectuate the removal of somebody that law enforcement has identified as a victim of a crime and a person who is collaborating on a criminal investigation,” he said. As the flights and the media hubbub around them recede, the migrants are working to build new lives for themselves. Some are working to enroll their children in public schools, Espinoza-Madrigal said. Others are trying to secure authorization to work. Most are looking for long-term housing. “We expect those individuals to have more opportunities available to them as they continue in their journey, particularly securing immigration protection and relief,” Espinoza-Madrigal said. I don’t like to OVER pack so I plan. And I start… w/a grid of look options.” The video then cut to 15 photos of Retta modeling beautiful outfits before revealing which stylish looks “made it over the Atlantic” for her trip. The rest of the first video showed her day traveling to Italy before she finally arrived at her accommodations from the Rome airport, “‘Twas a rough start here in Roma but she’s here,” the overlayed text read. (scroll to keep reading) The video ended with a message to “stay tuned” for the next part. Many people liked and commented on Retta’s new post, especially Lisa Delcampo of Netflix‘s The Circle Season 2, who wrote, “Already loving the first one. If You Ask Me For A Government To Use Behavioural Science Against Its People Should Be A Crime Says Calvin Robinson GB News
If You Ask Me, For A Government To Use Behavioural Science Against Its People Should Be A Crime, Says Calvin Robinson – GB News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/if-you-ask-me-for-a-government-to-use-behavioural-science-against-its-people-should-be-a-crime-says-calvin-robinson-gb-news/ The Covid response, from locking down individuals in a free country to mandating medical procedures and attempting to implement medical apartheid, may be the biggest scandal in living memory Why is it that every time it seems like we are about to have a breakthrough on holding politicians to account over Covid, some huge political news comes along and redirects our attention? This week we heard Pfizer executive J Small on record saying they never tested the Pfizer jab for transmissibility. Now, Pfizer were never required to test the vaccine for transmissibility because there was political pressure to roll the vaccine out – but governments made decisions to impose lockdown restrictions and run public health campaigns on the basis that the jabs WOULD prevent COVID being passed on. That’s what we were led to believe. Some argue that studies from Israel and the UK quickly influenced the view that the vaccines helped prevent transmission following roll out –but I think knee jerk and draconian lockdown measures were unnecessary. These decisions had a huge impact on people’s livelihoods and they are still at stake due to the cost-of-lockdown crisis. An unprecedented number of pubs are closing, the high street has been decimated, and the jabs are still being pushed. ‘These decisions had a huge impact on people’s livelihoods and they are still at stake due to the cost-of-lockdown crisis’, says Calvin Robinson GB News Rob Roos MEP put a question to Pfizer director J Small during a COVID hearing in the European Parliament, and her laughter and unequivocal answer sent shockwaves through the media. If you ask me, for a government to use behavioural science against its people should be a crime. Politicians are elected to represent us, not manipulate us. To me, the whole ‘don’t kill granny’ campaign was wicked, but that was just the start. Durham Cathedral implemented a vaccine passport, requiring the faithful masses to provide proof of covid status before entering. I believe this is counter-Scriptural, we all know Christ sat with lepers, but of course, Covid is nothing like leprosy; yes, it could be serious, but for many it was like a seasonal influenza. The Church removed choice from those who wished to be close to God whether they had Covid or not. In my mind there is a word for people who would keep others away from Our Lord – evil. It’s medical apartheid. Dividing people based on their medical status. Not even their health (be they healthy or infected) but their vaccine status. Vaccine mandates for health workers, for example, make no sense. Why did hundreds of carers lose their jobs for their personal decision not to receive a vaccine at a time when we apparently needed more care workers than ever? Surely, that’s counterproductive. If the Covid jab wasn’t initially tested for transmissibility your personal choice would have no impact on other people. It’s down to you to weigh up the health benefits either way and decide for yourself whether you’d be better off taking the jab or not. I decided not to. As a relatively young & healthy man with no comorbidities, I saw that a US study showed the adverse reactions from the jab amongst young males made it more of a risk than Covid itself, and that there were concerns in the States of higher than expected rates of heart inflammation in young men. I went on to catch Covid, and frankly, I’ve had worse colds, but now I have natural immunity, which of course, is always superior to superficial immunity, without the risk of heart defects. Win-win? Why then were people being bullied and pressured into taking the jab? The Archbishop of Canterbury inappropriately moralised the jab during his Christmas message saying, “Get vaccinated. It’s how we love our neighbour. Loving our neighbour is what Jesus told us to do. It’s Christmas: do what he said.” In my opinion, using the name of Our Lord to convince people to take a medical procedure they may not want or need, with the benefit of lining the pockets of Big Pharma, is wrong. I believe we were misinformed by our public institutions, politicians, media outlets and the Church. The covid response, from locking down individuals in a free country to mandating medical procedures and attempting to implement medical apartheid, may be the biggest scandal in living memory. Time will tell.

Investment Guru Recommends Oryen Network, Polygon, Ripple, And Chainlink – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/investment-guru-recommends-oryen-network-polygon-ripple-and-chainlink-cryptonews/ An investment guru who already made his fortunes with other cryptos has recently selected his best picks for the coming months. Those picks are Oryen Network, Polygon, Ripple, and Chainlink. He thinks they all have the strength to succeed and could be precisely what your portfolio needs to elevate it to a new level. While the market might be in a bear run, experts still think there’s money to be made in crypto. And at current prices, they believe now might be the time to buy. A recommended strategy right now focuses on the long-term rather than worrying about hourly charts, and with the following cryptos, your portfolio could be primed for long-term success: Oryen Network (ORY) Oryen helps eliminate the barriers to entry that have been preventing many mainstream investors from putting money in crypto, thanks to the groundbreaking Oryen Autostaking Technic (OAT). With OAT, newcomers to crypto don’t need to understand or manage staking and don’t have to move their tokens elsewhere to start earning. A massive 90% APY is paid directly into your wallet from holding the token at hourly intervals. This makes Oryen the most straightforward way to earn in crypto, and it’s an investment that could therefore be due considerable gains in the future. Polygon (MATIC) While many other cryptos have struggled in the bear run, MATIC has remained relatively strong. Polygon made some gains off the back of news of mainstream adoption of its technology, which gave the market confidence for future growth. MATIC could still be a credible investment, so now might be the time to invest. Ripple (XRP) XRP was once regarded as one of the best crypto investments, but prices have struggled over the last few years because of growing regulatory issues and it being delisted on certain exchanges. While it’s harder to buy XRP right now, it could be a wise investment if it manages to put these troubles in the past and start being listed again. Chainlink (LINK) As one of the most popular smart contract platforms in the crypto space, LINK has long been one of the cornerstones of the altcoin world. But experts still think it has room to grow and that current prices may be considered an absolute steal when looked back on in the future. Conclusion Investment experts highly recommend LINK, ORY, XRP, and MATIC. And they could all fire your portfolio into success. It’s ORY which experts like the most, as it gives you strong price potential and massive passive gains along the way. OPEC+ Members Line Up To Endorse Output Cut After U.S. Coercion Claim – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/opec-members-line-up-to-endorse-output-cut-after-u-s-coercion-claim-reuters/ U.S. claimed more than one OPEC country coerced into cut Iraq Kuwait, other OPEC+ members, stand by decision Saudi defence minister says decision was purely economic CAIRO Oct 16 (Reuters) – OPEC+ member states lined up on Sunday to endorse a steep production cut agreed this month after the White House, stepping up a war of words with Riyadh, claimed Saudi Arabia had coerced some other nations into supporting the move. Washington noted on Thursday that the cut would boost Russia’s foreign earnings and suggested it had been engineered for political reasons by Riyadh, which on Sunday emphatically denied it was supporting Moscow in its war with Ukraine. The kingdom’s defense minister, Prince Khalid bin Salman, also said the Oct 5 decision to reduce output by 2 million barrels per day – which was taken despite oil markets being tight – was unanimous and based on economic factors. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com His comment was echoed by Iraq, OPEC’s second largest exporter, and several other producer states. “There is complete consensus among OPEC+ countries that the best approach in dealing with the oil market conditions during the current period of uncertainty and lack of clarity is a pre-emptive approach that supports market stability and provides the guidance needed for the future,” Iraq’s state oil marketer SOMO said in a statement. Kuwait Petroleum Corporation Chief Executive Officer Nawaf Saud al-Sabah also welcomed the decision by OPEC+ – which includes other major producers, notably Russia – and said the country was keen to maintain a balanced oil markets, state news agency KUNA reported. Oman and Bahrain also said in separate statements that OPEC had unanimously agreed on the reduction. Algeria’s energy minister called the Oct. 5 decision “historic” and he and OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais, visiting Algeria, expressed their full confidence in it, Algeria’s Ennahar TV reported. Ghais later told a news conference that the organisation targeted a balance between supply and demand rather than a specific price. Oil inventories in major economies are at lower levels than when OPEC has cut output in the past. But some analysts have said recent volatility in crude markets could be remedied by a cut that would help attract investors to an underperforming market. U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said on Thursday that “more than one” OPEC member had felt coerced by Saudi Arabia into the vote, adding that the cut would also increase Russia’s revenues and blunt the effectiveness of sanctions imposed over its invasion of Ukraine. Khalid bin Salman said on Sunday he was “astonished” by claims his country was “standing with Russia in its war with Ukraine.” “It is telling that these false accusations did not come from the Ukrainian government,” the king’s younger son wrote on Twitter. Technology Can Make Northern Roads Safer Slower: Report Sudbury.com
Technology Can Make Northern Roads Safer, Slower: Report – Sudbury.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/technology-can-make-northern-roads-safer-slower-report-sudbury-com/ Report from Northern Policy Institute recommends new ways to make roads and highway traveling safer in the North Technology can be used to make Northern Ontario roads safer with such things as sensors that will automatically create a lower speed limit if the roads are too snowy or ice-covered.  Using the technology can reduce crashes and save lives according to a detailed report published by the Northern Policy Institute (NPI), — Smart Solutions for Northern Roads authored by William Dunstan. Dunstan argued that by using existing technology to change accepted driving practises, fewer crashes would occur and lives could be saved. It would also reduce the number of driving disruptions from closed highways.   “Roads in Northern Ontario are often dangerous, in poor shape, or non-existent. A new briefing note from NPI finds that these shortcomings can be addressed by using innovative technologies in road construction and design. Several “smart road” technologies already implemented in other areas represent cost-effective options to improve safety. As well, innovative road construction techniques could make it cheaper and easier to build and maintain roads in Northern Ontario,” Dunstan wrote. The 14-page report outlines there are several options open to the government to bring about changes. One of the options is called FAST, or Fixed Automated Spray Technology. FAST is already being used in a handful of locations in Southern Ontario.  The FAST option would automatically spray anti-icing liquids when sensors detect that atmospheric conditions are likely to form ice or bonded snow on the road surface.  “The technology is best suited for bridges that freeze before the rest of the road, especially those in remote locations that are costly to service manually,” said the report.  The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) currently maintains eight FAST installations across the province, but only one in its northern regions: at Burk’s Falls, near the southern boundary of the northeastern region, said the report. Another option would use sensors to determine a safer — and slower — speed limit when the weather is bad. The system is known as a Dynamic Speed Limit (DSL), which would adjust the speed limit to match the prevailing road conditions. Drivers would be forced to slow down and therefore reduce crashes. The report said the system could send weather information to an operator who would manually adjust the speed limit, or it would use technology to automatically change the speed limits.  The report said DSLs have been implemented successfully in British Columbia on roads similar to those in Northern Ontario.  One study done in 2021 examined the impact of DSLs on a section of a rural, undivided, two-lane highway and a divided, four-lane freeway during the winter season (October–March). It was found that DSLs reduced collision frequency by 35 per cent, said the report.  Dunstan argued that DSLs could be implemented easily enough given that weather sensors are already in place on highways throughout Northern Ontario. Dunstan noted in this report that “on some northern highways, half of all collisions and an equal share of fatal crashes occur during periods of snow and ice cover on roads.”  Section speed control is another option described in the report. It said instead of using speed cameras to monitor the speed of a vehicle at one location, the cameras could be spaced apart over several kilometres to monitor a vehicle’s speed over that section of highway. Studies done in other jurisdictions found that section control was able to reduce the incidence of serious auto crashes, injuries and deaths from 30 to 50 per cent. “If drivers know that their speed will be monitored across an extended road segment, they are more likely to adhere to the lower speed limit,” said the report. The fourth option outlined in the report was about the creation of wooden mat roads. This option speaks to the need of more all-weather roads to serve small and rural communities in the Far North. The report said the many existing winter roads do not last long enough and with climate change, most winter roads will be in place for weeks, instead of months. This would be especially important in areas that have wetlands and muskeg. This would make mat roads viable, said the report, because they have less environmental impact than a traditional gravel road, and are far less expensive to build and maintain.  The report concluded that the Ontario government should take a serious look at the options for improving safety as well as commit to more funding for research.  “To improve road safety in the North, the Ontario government should implement proven smart road technologies on many sections of highways. Furthermore, government support ought to be provided for further research and trials to assist the development of equally promising but less proven road construction techniques.” This is the second report in as many months where NPI is recommending changes to government policy to improve Northern Ontario highways. A report released in September — Saving Lives and Money: 2 + 1 Roads — spoke to the importance of twin-laning major highways across the North in a move aimed at saving lives.

Professor Jon Taylor, Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of Political Science and Geography at UTSA joined Leading SA to dive into some election detail. SAN ANTONIO – Early voting is just around the corner, and there are competitive elections across Texas. Professor Jon Taylor, Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of Political Science and Geography at UTSA, joined Leading SA to dive into some election detail. Professor Taylor shared his perspective on the governor’s race and the potential outcome. “The public polling suggests that Beto O’Rourke is down to Governor Abbott by anywhere between 4 to 7 points. I strongly suspect that the internal polling for the Abbott campaign especially, is probably telling him something different. Why? Because of all the negative ads we’re seeing all over TV, radio, and elsewhere, that tells you that his internal polling probably says this race is a lot closer. Beto O’Rourke is definitely campaigning like it’s a lot closer. And so it is fascinating because the difference between the two, Abbott is not making many campaign appearances better, of course, is barnstorming the state of Texas,” Professor Taylor said. Professor Taylor said there have been noticeable differences in campaign strategies regarding the gubernatorial race. “Abbott has been pressing the issue of property tax reform, the impact of inflation, and how that’s impacting people. And it’s kind of fascinating just to watch how they’re advertising, because you see where O’Rourke is going with the issues that are going to resonate with younger voters, with women, with people of color. On the other hand, you’ve got Abbott’s ads which are aimed more toward economic development, maintaining where he’s where he’s been and where he wants to take the state,” Professor Taylor said. It’s not just the governor on the ballot, though. Professor Taylor discussed additional races, both state and local. “Lieutenant governor’s race between Mike Collier and Lieutenant Governor Patrick, the attorney general’s race between Attorney General Paxton and Garcia. You’ve got a couple of fascinating races as well at the local level, for county judge, House District 118, the Bexar County district attorney’s race. And so across the ballot there are a number of races that are fun to watch that are relatively close or we think may be relatively close and are definitely, I think, going to be at least compelling to the voters in less than, well, eight days from now when early voting starts,” Professor Taylor said. Crime and inflation are at the top of so many families’ minds around the country and here in Texas. “You know, this is not a good year for Democrats nationally, and that tends to have an effect down ballot two state races, which is why Democrats across the state of Texas are fighting a bit of an uphill battle. That said, can they defeat the crosswinds, you know, the headwinds that are taking place? Maybe Beto O’Rourke suggests that they can. The problem is, is the way currently Democrats are positioned in the state House and state Senate, it’s going to be a bit of a reach for them to actually control one or two houses after November,” Professor Taylor said. 4 Ways I Made Friends As A Single 73-Year-Old Woman In A New Town TravelAwaits
4 Ways I Made Friends As A Single, 73-Year-Old Woman In A New Town – TravelAwaits https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/4-ways-i-made-friends-as-a-single-73-year-old-woman-in-a-new-town-travelawaits/ “You’re doing WHAT?” was the typical response following news that I was moving from Chicago to Coastal South Carolina. As I was reminded repeatedly, I would have no friends or family closer than a 10-hour drive. At 73, wasn’t I too old to pull up stakes? No, I explained. At 73, it was time to live my dream. In Chicago, my friends were three traffic jams away and my family had busy lives. The year my youngest grandchild got her driver’s license seemed the perfect time to trade in my aging granny-mobile for a more reliable car and find my dream place on the ocean. After selling my house, packing, buying a condo, and unpacking, I lay across my bed in my new condo, exhausted and depleted. “I could never do this again,” I moaned. I looked out my sliding glass doors at waves crashing on the sand and knew that if this was it, it was an “it” that suited me.  After 30 years of living alone, I cherish my single life, but everyone needs friends. In the friendly South, I figured that making friends would be easy. It turned out to be a project that took commitment and the ability to handle rejection without pouting. Here are my suggestions for making friends in a new town. Your local library offers more than books. See what activities they host. Photo credit: Carol Stigger 1. Get A Library Card In addition to borrowing books, movies, music, and museum, park, and event passes, libraries offer activities for a wide range of interests. I checked the library’s calendar of events. Craft lessons: Not for me. Book club: Not a fan of their selections. Line dancing: Why not! I made some fun acquaintances, but no solid friendships. Two years later, I found a meaningful way to fit into the library scene. I schedule writers for their monthly “Meet the Author” event. To do this, I have coffee with candidates, read their books, promote the events, and introduce the authors. It’s a great way to meet people who share my interest in books and writing. Houses of worship are good places to meet people, but you may need to shop around. Photo credit: Carol Stigger 2. Visit Places Of Worship These are known to be friendly places, and you don’t have to be religious to participate in their activities. I chose the first church I visited because their sign said “The Friendly Church.” It should have said, “We will make you feel like wallpaper.” I am sure members are friendly among themselves, but they didn’t have a handle on “hospitality.” I signed up for one of their Bible studies and met some narrow-minded people, a few absolute jerks, and a woman who asked me if my Coach handbag was a knock-off. I told her the truth: “I shop at consignment stores.” Gasps were audible. The next church I visited is the one I joined, thanks to a woman I met at a fellowship dinner. “I live alone, too,” she said scrawling her name and phone number on a napkin. “Call me anytime you need to talk or a bowl of chicken soup. I don’t care if it is 2 a.m.” Her friends were just as hospitable, and I quickly made several friends I can depend on. In addition, the church has a near-professional music program with frequent, free concerts in the sanctuary and on the lawn. Pro Tip: Stay away from churches whose belief systems set your hair on fire. You don’t need those kinds of friends. 3. Hand Out Business Cards How many pounds of paper scraps with phone numbers scrawled on them are in landfills? I wouldn’t take a stab at that one, but I envision scraps with my phone number filling a yard waste bag. Now, I hand out business cards with my name, phone number, website, and motto: “Not all who wander are lost.” The line for “job title” was a puzzle. “Retired” sounded like I had given up. “Retired Teacher” would provoke controversial conversations I did not want to have. I settled on “Journalist,” which is a good conversation starter that I can steer in a comfortable direction.  Sometimes I’m a travel journalist (people love to talk about their travels). With receptive people, I’m a microfinance reporter, which opens the door to talking about my favorite way to help families in poor countries work out of poverty. You can leave that line blank or get a little personal. “Aspiring Golf Pro,” “Kitchen Magician,” “Star Gazer,” and “Globe Trotter” are a few ideas. Consider your interests and boil your favorite down to a few words. Pro Tips: Include a headshot on your business card. Don’t get glossy cards, because you can’t write on them. A dog is a great ice breaker with humans and other dogs in local parks. Photo credit: Carol Stigger 4. Consider Adopting A Rescue Dog Doctors advise, “Walk your dog every day, even if you don’t have a dog.” I’ve always had dogs, but I downsized from my beloved labs to a 10-pound Yorkie mix rescue dog named Harley (like the motorcycle). Such a little dog deserved a big name. I have not made one friend walking Harley up and down the beach, through parks, around lakes, and shopping centers. But, I’ve gathered hundreds of smiles and engaged in many casual conversations thanks to Harley. A cute, little dog is hard to resist. As I live in a vacation area, most people I encounter are happy, and their cheer is contagious. When I set out for a walk with Harley, sometimes I’m in low spirits. Thanks to exercise and cheerful greetings, I usually come home with a spring in my step and a smile on my face. If having a dog is incompatible with your living space or lifestyle, many animal shelters welcome volunteer dog walkers. You get all the benefits of walking a dog with none of the responsibilities. Harley uses his porch potty after dark when I’m asleep. Photo credit: Carol Stigger Pro Tip: I live in a condo with no elevator, so yard access requires navigating 30 stairs. Midnight doggie nature calls are hazardous for elderly people using stairs while half asleep, but I found a solution. A Porch Potty is perfect for a small dog, but I would not recommend it for a large dog. Harley’s porch potty has artificial grass and a plastic fireplug.  A year after my move, I had an interesting group of friends: a retired traveling nurse who scuba dived around the world; a cloistered nun who walked out of the convent after 10 years and married a Jewish man; a horse whisperer; a successful, imaginative entrepreneur; and several writers, to name a few. Before I had friends, the sticker shock in travel was not the plane fare, it was airport parking and dog boarding. A friend and I dog-sit for each other and time our trips accordingly. Because I need some sort of schedule, I joined a weekly brunch group on Tuesdays and Rummikube (gin rummy with tiles not cards) players on Saturday. My writers’ group meets weekly. Now, my calendar never has a bleak, blank look but allows enough time for that leisurely pace I dreamed of before I retired. Each person has their own social needs and finding that personal balance takes time and effort. It’s an enjoyable project and the rewards are satisfying.

BBB: Pick The Right Insurance Policy For Your New Small Business Insurance News Net
BBB: Pick The Right Insurance Policy For Your New Small Business Insurance News Net
BBB: Pick The Right Insurance Policy For Your New Small Business – Insurance News Net https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/bbb-pick-the-right-insurance-policy-for-your-new-small-business-insurance-news-net/ Business insurance protects your small business, both financially and legally. However, if you are just starting out, navigating insurance policies can be tricky. Some kinds of insurance are required by law, others by your clients, and other types are optional. How do you know what policies you need for your business? BBB offers the following tips to help you make a good decision. HOW TO CHOOSE SMALL BUSINESS INSURANCE Check your requirements. Before you start considering plans, find out what kind of insurance you are legally required to have. If you have employees, federal government requires your company to carry unemployment, disability, and workers’ compensation insurance. Also, check your regional government website to ensure you meet state or province-level requirements.Assess your business risks. Think about what risks your business may run. Do you work in an area where natural disasters or accidents could affect your business? Are you at risk of lawsuits? Do you have a physical office that could be damaged? Do you sell physical products that could be lost, broken, or stolen? These factors will help you determine what kind of insurance you need.Know types of insurance and what they cover. These types of business insurance are the most common. However, depending on your type of business, you may need more specialized policies. For example, if your company manufactures something, product liability insurance will protect you in case a defective product injures someone. Here are different types of insurance: General liability insurance: This insurance policy protects your business against financial loss in many situations, such as a customer injury at your business, property damage to your business, or defending your business against a lawsuit. Errors and omissions insurance. This policy, also called professional liability insurance, protects you in case of business error. This type of insurance is common in service-based businesses, such as consulting. Business interruption insurance. This insurance covers expenses and lost income that occurs during a covered incident. For example, this would cover a shop that had to close due to flooding. Workers comp insurance. Required by law for businesses with employees, this policy covers medical costs or lost wages if an employee gets injured at work. Get help from a licensed insurance agent. If you can’t decide how much coverage you need or what kind of policy to purchase, a licensed insurance agent can help. However, keep in mind that agents receive a commission when they sell a policy. Ask for recommendations and check online reviews to make sure you find a reputable agent that will do what’s best for your business.Consider bundling insurance into one policy. A business owner policy (BOP) combines several types of business insurance into one bundle. This bundling is a good way to simplify your insurance purchase and get a better price.Compare prices and companies. Benefits and costs, as well as customer service, will inevitably vary from company to company. Get several offers and compare the rates, terms, and benefits before you choose.Reassess your needs on a regular basis. As your business grows and changes, your insurance needs can shift. Every year, reassess your business to ensure your insurance policy still protects you. If need be, discuss any business changes with your insurance agent to see how they might affect your coverage. Scientists Reappraise The Role Of ‘Zombie’ Cells That Anti-Aging Medicine Has Sought To Eliminate – Neuroscience News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/scientists-reappraise-the-role-of-zombie-cells-that-anti-aging-medicine-has-sought-to-eliminate-neuroscience-news/ Summary: Some senescent (zombie) cells are embedded in young, healthy tissue and promote normal repair from damage, researchers say. Source: UCSF Not all senescent cells are harmful “zombies” that should be wiped out to prevent age-related disease, according to new research from UC San Francisco, which found that some of them are embedded in young, healthy tissues and promote normal repair from damage. Scientists have now seen these cells in action in lung tissue, as well as other organs that serve as barriers in the body, such as the small intestine, colon and skin. When they used drugs called senolytics to kill these cells, injuries to lung tissues healed more slowly. “Senescent cells can occupy niches with privileged positions as ‘sentinels’ that monitor tissue for injury and respond by stimulating nearby stem cells to grow and initiate repair,” said Tien Peng, MD, associate professor of pulmonary, critical care, allergy and sleep medicine, and senior author of the study, which appears in Science on October 13, 2022. Aging cells can both damage and heal Peng said it was understandable that scientists at first viewed senescent cells as purely detrimental. As people age, senescent cells accumulate that have characteristics of old, worn-out cells, including the inability to make new cells. Instead of dying like normal aged cells, they to live on, spewing a cocktail of inflammatory compounds that form the senescence associated secretory phenotype (SASP). These factors are linked to Alzheimer’s disease, arthritis, and other age-related maladies including cancer. The catchy name “zombie cells” was coined for them. Using senolytics that target and kill “zombie cells,” researchers made the exciting discovery that clearing senescent cells from animals thwarted or diminished age-related disease and extended the lifespan of the animals. Thereafter, a boom of activity ensued in research labs and pharmaceutical companies focused on discovering and refining more powerful versions of these drugs. But killing off senescent cells has dangers, Peng said. For one thing, this current study showed that senescent cells also possess the ability to promote normal healing through activation of stem cell repair. “Our study suggests that senolytics could adversely affect normal repair, but they also have the potential to target diseases where senescent cells drive pathologic stem cell behavior,” said Peng. Lighting up senescent cells One major challenge to studying senescent cells is that biomarkers of senescence (such as the gene p16) are often quite sparse, making it difficult to detect the cells. In early experiments, researchers extracted cells called fibroblasts into culture dishes, allowing them to grow and produce enough cells to experiment with, and then stressed the cells with chemicals that induced them to become senescent. But in living organisms, cells interact with tissues around them, strongly affecting the cells’ gene activity. This means that the characteristics of cells growing isolated in a glass dish could be quite different from that of cells in their natural environment. To create a more powerful tool for their studies, postdoctoral scholar Nabora Reyes de Barboza, Ph.D. and colleagues improved on a common technique of fusing a relevant gene—in this case, the p16 gene, which is overly active in senescent cells—with green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a marker that can reveal the location of the cells under ultraviolet light. By enhancing the quantity and stability of green fluorescent protein in these senescent cells, Reyes greatly amplified the fluorescent signal, finally enabling the researchers to see senescent cells in their natural habitat of living tissues. “Zombies” stimulate stem cells shortly after birth Using this highly sensitive tool, the researchers found that senescent cells exist in young and healthy tissues to a greater extent than previously thought, and actually begin appearing shortly after birth. The scientists also identified specific growth factors that senescent cells secrete to stimulate stem cells to grow and repair tissues. Relevant to aging and tissue injury is the discovery that cells of the immune system such as macrophages and monocytes can activate senescent cells, suggesting that inflammation seen in aged or damaged tissue is a critical modifier of senescent cell activity and regeneration. In their studies of lung tissue, Peng’s team observed green glowing senescent cells lying next to stem cells on the basement membrane that serves as a barrier preventing foreign cells and harmful chemicals from entering the body and also allows oxygen to diffuse from air in the lungs into underlying tissues. Damage can occur at this dynamic interface. Using this highly sensitive tool, the researchers found that senescent cells exist in young and healthy tissues to a greater extent than previously thought, and actually begin appearing shortly after birth. Image is in the public domain The team saw senescent cells in similar positions in other barrier organs such as small intestine, colon, and skin, and their experiments confirmed that if senescent cells were killed with senolytics, lung stem cells were not able to properly repair the barrier surface. Leanne Jones, Ph.D., director of the UCSF Bakar Aging Research Institute and Stuart Lindsay Endowed Professor in Experimental Pathology, said Peng’s study is truly significant for the field of aging research, where the goal is to help individuals live longer and more healthy lives. See also “The studies suggest that senolytics research should focus on recognizing and precisely targeting harmful senescent cells, perhaps at the earliest signs of disease, while leaving helpful ones intact,” she said. “These findings emphasize the need to develop better drugs and small molecules that will target specific subsets of senescent cells that are implicated in disease rather than in regeneration.” Additional authors include Nabora Reyes, Maria Krasilnikov, Nancy C. Science Abstract Sentinel p16INK4a+ cells in the basement membrane form a reparative niche in the lung We engineered an ultrasensitive reporter of p16INK4a, a biomarker of cellular senescence. Our reporter detected p16INK4a-expressing fibroblasts with certain senescent characteristics that appeared shortly after birth in the basement membrane adjacent to epithelial stem cells in the lung. Furthermore, these p16INK4a+ fibroblasts had enhanced capacity to sense tissue inflammation and respond through their increased secretory capacity to promote epithelial regeneration. In addition, p16INK4a expression was required in fibroblasts to enhance epithelial regeneration. This study highlights a role for p16INK4a+ fibroblasts as tissue-resident sentinels in the stem cell niche that monitor barrier integrity and rapidly respond to inflammation to promote tissue regeneration.

Yankees Vs. Guardians: Five Things New York Must Do To Come Back And Win ALDS – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/yankees-vs-guardians-five-things-new-york-must-do-to-come-back-and-win-alds-cbs-sports/ The New York Yankees are one loss away from going home for the winter. Saturday night the Yankees blew a 5-3 ninth inning lead in a 6-5 walk-off loss to the Cleveland Guardians in Game 3 of the ALDS. Cleveland leads the best-of-five series 2-1. One more win and the Guardians will take on the Houston Astros in the ALCS. “Move on,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said when asked how you deal with a loss like Game 3. “It stings right now and it’s raw. You know, you’re frustrated because you’re so close to the end there, but we got to turn the page … We got Gerrit [Cole] going [Sunday]. We expect to come out here and win.” The Yankees are certainly capable of coming back from the 2-1 deficit — six years ago they erased a 2-0 ALDS deficit against Cleveland — though it won’t be easy, and they’ll need a few things to fall into place for it to become a reality. Here are five things that must happen for the Yankees to mount an ALDS comeback. 1. Get a dominant start from Cole This almost goes without saying. Gerrit Cole will start Game 4, and thanks to the unusual ALDS schedule, he will be on normal rest following his Game 1 outing last Tuesday. Cole was very good in Game 1 and a repeat performance will be necessary in Game 4. The Yankees need Cole to keep the Guardians in check and also chew up innings because the bullpen is both taxed and shorthanded due to injury. At least Clay Holmes will be available in Game 4. 2. Judge builds on Game 3 Aaron Judge looked about as bad as a hitter can look in Games 1 and 2. He went 0 for 8 with a walk and seven strikeouts in the two games, then in Game 3 he hit a towering 449-foot two-run homer to center field that tied the contest at two in the third inning. Judge hit another ball to the warning track later in the game. Needless to say, the Yankees need Judge to continue walloping the baseball and carrying his team like he did during his MVP-caliber regular season. There were times during the summer when New York’s lineup was so decimated by injuries that Judge was a one-many army dragging his team to wins. They need that guy again. Also, the Yankees badly need Giancarlo Stanton (1 for 9 in the ALDS), Gleyber Torres (2 for 12), and a few others to wake up at the plate. Rookie Oswaldo Cabrera went went 0 for 8 with five strikeouts in Games 1 and 2 before breaking out with a double and a two-run homer in Game 3. The supporting cast definitely needs to step up as well.  3. Someone else picks up big outs in relief The Yankees have used righty Jonathan Loáisiga and lefty Wandy Peralta in all three games this series, including Peralta for an extended seven-batter outing in Game 3. I can’t imagine they won’t be available with the season on the line in Game 4, though both will be pitching for the third straight day, which could compromise them. They may not be at their optimum level of effectiveness should either need to take the hill. In that case, the Yankees need someone else — preferably someones else — to come out of the bullpen and get important outs at some point. The offense can help by giving the pitching staff breathing room, but you can’t expect an avalanche of runs in the postseason. Here is New York’s ALDS bullpen: Closer: RHP Clay Holmes Setup: RHP Jonathan Loáisiga and LHP Wandy Peralta Middle: RHP Miguel Castro, LHP Lucas Luetge, RHP Clarke Schmidt, RHP Lou Trivino Long: RHP Domingo Germán and RHP Jameson Taillon Castro, Germán, and Luetge have not yet pitching in the series — Castro and Luetge haven’t even warmed up — and Taillon only faced three batters in Game 2. The career starter entered into the tenth inning of a tie game, so he was in the Circle of Trust, though he allowed two runs that inning and the Yankees may not want to throw him back into the fire if they can help it. Point is, Loáisiga and Peralta can’t do all the heavy lifting out of the bullpen the rest of the series. Whether Boone likes it or not, he’s going to have to ask someone else to get big outs at some point. Maybe it’s Taillon, maybe it’s Castro, maybe it’s someone else entirely. It has to happen though. The Yankees have at least 18 innings to cover if they plan on winning this series. 4. Clean up the defense The Yankees led all teams with 129 defensive runs saved during the regular season — the Dodgers were second with 84 — and their .720 defensive efficiency was second-best behind the Dodgers’ .729. I’m not sure I trust those exact numbers, but I buy the Yankees being one of the best defensive teams in baseball during the regular season. They revamped their roster with that goal in mind. That top notch defense has not been evident in the ALDS thus far. Josh Donaldson made a costly throwing error on José Ramírez‘s bloop double in the decisive tenth inning in Game 2, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa botched two players at short in Game 3. Both plays led directly to runs and forced the pitchers to throw more pitches. Extra outs are always bad news, but they’re especially costly in the playoffs. Cleveland puts the ball in play so much that playing sound defense is imperative. They’re going to test you and, if you don’t make the play, they’re going to take the extra base and force the issue. The Yankees have to clean up the defensive mistakes and stop giving the Guardians so many extra outs and extra bases. 5. Get lucky It’s better to be lucky than good, but it’s best to be lucky and good. A little luck — a favorable call, a fortunate bounce, etc. — wouldn’t hurt the Yankees at this point. They could use a break (or two or three) to turn the tide and begin to shift the series back in their favor. There’s no shame in getting a little help along the way.

Meta supports a research project that aims to advance the inclusive metaverse. The “Social Virtual Reality” project is concerned with increasing accessibility in VR for people with disabilities, senior citizens, or those impaired by illness. In particular, the group looks at social VR apps such as VRChat, Rec Room, or Horizon Worlds. Social VR can improve quality of life “The buzzing world of SVR has the potential to open up a wide array of opportunities for disabled and older people to engage with life and improve its quality,” explains project leader Dr. Vanja Garaj. The Brunel Design School research director sees great potential in social VR apps. In addition to simple entertainment, for example, social VR combats loneliness. Improving employment prospects for people with disabilities through VR training or VR online education is also possible, she says. A framework for an inclusive metaverse The research team aims to develop a “Social Virtual Reality Inclusion Framework” within the next three years. This will include tools and guidance on how to make the metaverse more accessible for elders, people with vision or hearing loss, dexterity or mobility issues, mental illness, cognitive impairments, or learning disabilities. One such approach is already offered by the VR app WalkinVR, which makes current VR hits such as Beat Saber or Job Simulator accessible to people with physical disabilities. The VR fitness app FitXR also focuses on inclusion, offering workouts for people with mobility impairments, for example. Kündigung jederzeit online möglich ab 2,80 € / Monat Meta supports research for more inclusion in the metaverse Other organizations involved in the project include Cambridge University and tech giant Meta. According to Dr. Garaj, Meta played a decisive role in the realization of the project. Meta’s support helped justify the project at the proposal stage, he said. It is unclear what the group’s involvement was in concrete terms. However, it is likely to be mainly advisory and offering technical support, as the project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) to the tune of just under $1.1 million. “We see Social VR as a significant step towards the ‘full-blown’ metaverse and Meta is leading the efforts to establish this new global network,” Garaj said. ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED (UX9702): Fascinating Foldable Laptop Of The Future Tech Edt
ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED (UX9702): Fascinating Foldable Laptop Of The Future Tech Edt
ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED (UX9702): Fascinating Foldable Laptop Of The Future – Tech Edt https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/asus-zenbook-17-fold-oled-ux9702-fascinating-foldable-laptop-of-the-future-tech-edt/ ASUS’ innovative Zenbook 17 Fold is here to prove that folding gadgets are the way of the future. ASUS has built the device of choice for gadget enthusiasts by allowing the converting of a powerful 17″ tablet into a 12″ compact laptop that is smaller than a sheet of photocopier paper. It’s almost similar to a supersized Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 running on Windows 11, which is quite intriguing. Its folding design should inform you that this isn’t your average laptop but rather the most advanced look at the evolution of the ordinary laptop. The cool aspect is evident, but knowing what you’re getting is critical. Folding laptops are no longer a revolutionary futuristic concept, but they nevertheless draw attention in public, something you’ll have to accept if you’re traveling or commuting. CPU: Intel® Core i7-1250U Processor 1.1 GHz RAM: 16GB LPDDR5 Display: 17.3-inch, 2560 x 1920 FOLED 4:3 aspect ratio, 0.2ms response time, 500nits HDR peak brightness, 100% DCI-P3 color gamut Storage: 1TB SSD Ports: 2 x Thunderbolt 4, 1 x 3.5mm Combo Audio Jack Battery life: 75WHrs (ASUS website) Wireless: Wi-Fi 6E(802.11ax) (Dual band) 2*2 + Bluetooth 5 Dimensions: 37.85 x 28.76 x 0.87 ~ 1.29 cm Weight: 1.50 kg Premium build redefined Zenbook 17 Fold OLED redefines the idea of premium, from its exclusive color and high-tech materials to its exquisite finish. You’ll never have to settle for less in a laptop because it has everything you need. The glass panel is also embossed with an ASUS logo that looks quite Star Fleet-esque, completing the futuristic image. The Zenbook 17 Fold opens and closes like a book, thanks to a patented hinge mechanism that runs down the center of the tablet. At first glance, it appears to be the same as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, but upon closer inspection, some differences make the laptop the more sophisticated version. The hinge is easy to open and close and is not prone to damage due to the high build quality of the frame and display. Despite its large screen, the ZenBook 17 Fold OLED is quite portable. When unfolded, it measures only 8mm and weighs 1.50 kg. In terms of ports, there are two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports and a 3.5mm combo audio jack. In addition, the battery has a large capacity of 75Whrs. As a laptop with the keyboard folio positioned over the lower portion of the display screen and magnetically attached to the Fold. The integrated ErgoSense Bluetooth keyboard has a good 1.4mm key travel and does a fantastic job for typing. This connects to the Fold via Bluetooth, eliminating the need to physically connect to the laptop and making it more adaptable. However, when you go closer to the center, you’ll notice a higher amount of flex. This is less of an issue when the keyboard is placed on a table, but when used on the notebook itself, the flexing is fairly noticeable. Finally, at the top of the display screen, a 5MPx digicam is flanked by microphones. The visual quality is noticeably greater than on standard computers, and the microphones are adequate for your daily Zoom calls. Superior visuals due to its OLED display The 17.3-inch screen has a 4:3 aspect ratio and a 2560 x 1920 pixel resolution. If that seems strange, it’s because it folds into two 1920 x 1280 pixel monitors. The display has a maximum brightness of 500 nits, supports 100% of the DCI-P3 color gamut, is Pantone-approved, and is certified for display HDR 500 True Black. In a nutshell, it’s a fantastic display. Because this display screen is designed to fold in half, there is a crease in the center. Nonetheless, while the crease is visible when the display screen is turned off, it is barely discernible while in use. That is essentially true of all folding units. ASUS has increased the radius of the hinge so that the display screen does not rip up in the middle over time. When shutting this up for transport, the keyboard folio can be sandwiched between the two display screen components. Because the laptop has a screen-to-body ratio of 87%, the bezels may appear slightly thicker when compared to recent flagship notebook screens. The increased bezel area, on the other hand, can be very useful when unfolding the notebook. Last but not least, despite having a touchscreen display, the ZenBook 17 Fold is not compatible with any form of digital smart pen, which appears to be a limitation of the panel in this size, according to ASUS. Solid audio with Harman Kardon-certified quad-speaker Dolby Atmos audio system The ZenBook 17 Fold contains Harmon Kardon speakers on both sides of the chassis, although the audio experience will vary depending on the angle. The two speakers face left and right when completely unfolded and on its kickstand, providing good audio separation and balanced loudness. However, when in laptop mode, the two speakers are at the top and bottom, with the top firing upward and the bottom-firing toward you. This results in an unusual floating auditory experience. At higher volumes, the bottom speaker bounces off table surfaces fairly aggressively, creating an unnatural shrillness. Meanwhile, the speakers are quite crisp and detailed. They may also produce a lot of loudness but don’t anticipate much bass response. For casual viewing, the dialogue is clear and crisp, but if you want to listen to music, you should probably put on your headphones. Decent performance for everyday work The Zenbook 17 Fold performed nicely for typical work duties, web browsing, and light Photoshop use, thanks to its ample memory and fast storage. However, don’t anticipate a high-performance computer from this; it’s powered by the Intel i7 1250U, a low-wattage chip built for small and light notebooks. This processor will provide more than enough horsepower for many folks. However, this is not ideal for heavy content creators or gamers looking for a work-play laptop. The verdict: ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold OLED While the Zenbook 17 Fold OLED’s form factor is intriguing and futuristic, there is still work to be done to make it a more aesthetic and functional solution. However, the concept has its advantages, and we are excited to see what the future holds for this area. ASUS holds the title of the finest foldable laptop with the ASUS Zenbook 17 Fold, and this isn’t simply because there isn’t much competition right now. You get a more durable build, better multitasking, and a better display. Opening it like a book to reveal the stunning, huge interior screen is still magical, as is shutting it with a snap to put it into standby. In terms of a workhorse notebook, where productivity and value are important, the ASUS ZenBook 17 Fold OLED will deliver the kind of performance you’d expect from a standard Ultrabook. This machine may be able to run some video games, although it is not intended for that purpose. Furthermore, the Fold is a first-generation design that must pass the test of time before we can draw conclusions about its dependability and sturdiness. With a folding screen, that is the type of machine that requires a lot of care and is never a carefree ultraportable like typical laptops.

Besides dangling the opportunity to get rich quickly, one of the biggest attractions for crypto traders was the ability to profit from wild price swings. Now with volatility all but gone — at least for now — both professionals and amateurs are altering their strategies as the crypto winter drags on.  A volatility gauge for Bitcoin has dropped in recent days to its lowest level since April, reaching 61 on Friday. That’s a far cry from the 140 it hit in May amid the collapse of the Terra stablecoin ecosystem. After surging to an all-time high of almost $69,000 in November, the largest digital asset by market value has been trading in a narrow range of around $20,000 since June.  Which begs the question: what exactly are crypto traders and investors, accustomed to the twists and turns of the asset class, doing now to make money?  Bloomberg News talked to a number of investors and traders about what they’ve been doing to survive the chill. Here’s a by no means complete list of recent strategies:  Selling Options Julian Koh, co-Founder and CEO of Ribbon Finance, a structured investment products protocol for DeFi, says his firm’s seen “increased demand to sell options,” which can make money in a sideways market. Ribbon over the past month reached $100 million in total value locked (a crypto term to denote funds deposited in a project) from $70 million, and its options vaults are “doing well in this environment,” Koh says.  “Basically it’s a way for people to express the view that markets will continue to be flat and still make money,” he added. Staking  Steven McClurg, co-founder and chief investment officer at digital-asset fund manager Valkyrie Investments, has been risk-off for most of the year. But he says Bitcoin’s a buy whenever it hits between $17,000-$18,000. “That’s when we’re buying. We’re waiting for those opportunities,” he said in an interview. But he’s also seeing “good opportunities” with staking certain assets. Avalanche, for instance, is a token he favors because it took a big hit earlier in the year. Buying it and staking it can earn 8% currently.  Still, given how uncertain things have been, McClurg has moved some of his firm’s assets into cash. “Sometimes doing nothing is a great strategy,” he says. Some of his strategies are more than 50% in cash. That could mean straight-up, old-fashioned cash, though it could also include a stablecoin like USDC or Gemini token.  Playing the Long Game With where Bitcoin’s currently trading, it makes sense to go long, according to Zaheer Ebtikar, portfolio manager at crypto fund LedgerPrime. “The market factors I look at tell me that a lot of people are positioned in the opposite way, so I think the expected value is for me to go long,” he said.  He’s noticed the “vol crush” in the market, which he likened to Bitcoin’s last halving event in 2020. But at some point, volatility will get “super attractive, the range will break and vol will surge again.” “This makes it pretty attractive to get long volatility because then you can make money if the range breaks if you think there’s another catalyst,” he added.  ‘Distressed-Asset Market’ One of the side effects of the crypto downturn has been that lots of DAOs — decentralized autonomous organizations that allow holders to vote on different proposals  — sitting on treasuries that are “in distress,” says Michael Safai of proprietary trading firm Dexterity Capital, meaning that their prices are beneath their treasury value.  “The game then is, Hey, can I convince the rest of the DAO to liquidate the treasury and then pay it out? And if I do that, the liquidation value is going to be greater than the price I’m paying of the token,” he said on a recent episode of Bloomberg’s “What Goes Up” podcast. “And that’s because crypto prices are sometimes irrational,” he said, adding that he’s seen this happening recently, though his firm has not done anything like this.  Catch all the Business News, Market News, Breaking News Events and Latest News Updates on Live Mint. Trump Attacks U.S. Jews In A Truth Social Post The Washington Post
Trump Attacks U.S. Jews In A Truth Social Post – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/trump-attacks-u-s-jews-in-a-truth-social-post-the-washington-post/ Former president Donald Trump attacked American Jews in a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, saying Jews in the United States must “get their act together” and show more appreciation for the state of Israel “before it is too late.” American Jews have long been accused of holding secret loyalty to Israel rather than the United States, and Trump’s post leaned on that antisemitic trope, suggesting that by virtue of their religion, American Jews should show more appreciation to Israel. Trump also complained in the post that “no president” had done more for Israel than he had but that Christian evangelicals are “far more appreciative of this than the people of the Jewish faith, especially those living in the U.S.” It was not the first time that Trump has suggested that American Jews, who traditionally have more often aligned with the Democratic Party on domestic policies, should be more supportive of him because of how he dealt with Israel. “Jewish people who live in the United States don’t love Israel enough. Does that make sense to you?” he said in an interview last year with an Orthodox Jewish magazine, adding that it seemed “strange” to him that he did not have more Jewish support. At a Hanukkah event at the White House in 2018, he drew criticism for referring to Israel as “your country” while speaking to American Jews. He was also rebuked when he said during an Oval Office meeting in 2019 that “any Jewish people who would vote for a Democrat, I think it shows either a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty.” Trump’s latest diatribe about Jews came as Republican candidates have made overt appeals to racial animus and resentments in the closing weeks of the midterm election campaign. It also comes as leading Republican figures have failed to disavow musician and sometime-Trump supporter Ye, the rapper and fashion designer formerly known as Kanye West. Ye earlier this month tweeted that he wanted to go “death con 3” on “JEWISH PEOPLE,” an apparent reference to Defcon, the U.S. military defense readiness system. Instagram and Twitter removed posts by the artist, who had been featured on conservative Fox News host Tucker Carlson’s show. Trump has long been frustrated that he has not drawn more support from American Jews, particularly when as president, he moved the U.S. Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and his Jewish son-in-law, Jared Kushner, helped negotiate new treaties between Israel and some of its Arab neighbors. In Sunday’s post, Trump wrote that his support among people living in Israel is “a different story.” “Highest approval rating in the World, could easily be P.M.!” he wrote, contrasting his popularity in the foreign country with his support among American Jews. Trump’s post drew quick criticism. “We don’t need the former president, who curries favor with extremists and antisemites, to lecture us about the US-Israel relationship,” Anti-Defamation League chief executive and national director Jonathan Greenblatt said in a statement. “It is not about a quid pro quo; it rests on shared values and security interests. This ‘Jewsplaining’ is insulting and disgusting.” On her personal Twitter account, Neera Tanden, a senior adviser to President Biden, wrote, “We should all stand against what feels like a growing chorus of anti-Semitism. There should be no quarter for it in our politics or culture.”

Ukraine Envoy Hopeful About Fate Of Musk’s Satellite Network – The Associated Press – En Español https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/ukraine-envoy-hopeful-about-fate-of-musks-satellite-network-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ WASHINGTON (AP) — A Ukrainian diplomat expressed optimism Sunday about securing the money needed for the continued operation of a satellite network funded by billionaire Elon Musk that has provided key battlefield and humanitarian contacts in the war with Russia. “It’s there, it’s working,” said the envoy, Oksana Markarova. “It will need to be working for a longer time.” She did not indicate whether Musk had agreed to continue funding his rocket company SpaceX’s Starlink internet service in Ukraine but said the country’s collaboration with the company has been excellent. “We got the Starlinks in Ukraine very quickly, in some areas for humanitarian support, it’s the only connection that we have,” Markarova told CBS’ “Face the Nation.” “And it’s very important to continue having it and I’m positive that we will find a solution there.” On Friday, senior U.S. officials confirmed that Musk had asked the Defense Department to take over funding for the service Starlink provides in Ukraine. Starlink, which provides broadband internet service using more than 2,200 low-orbiting satellites, has provided crucial battlefield communications for Ukrainian military forces since early in the nation’s defense against Russia’s February invasion. Musk suggested in a tweet Saturday that SpaceX may continue funding Starlink after all, though his tone and wording also raised the possibility that the Tesla CEO was just being sarcastic. It is not clear whether SpaceX has actually established future plans for service in Ukraine. “The hell with it … even though Starlink is still losing money & other companies are getting billions of taxpayer $, we’ll just keep funding Ukraine govt for free,“ Musk tweeted Saturday. Musk also recently has sparred with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after the billionaire suggested that Ukraine cede the strategically important Crimea region to Russia and make other concessions as part of a peace deal, drawing a rebuke from Zelenskyy. Musk tweeted on Friday that it was costing SpaceX $20 million a month to support Ukraine’s communications needs. Markarova said Ukraine has “disagreed with Elon Musk on some of his views about Crimea, and we were happy to discuss it with him.” She added that Ukraine is proud “to be one of the fastest growing Starlink countries globally.”

Analyzing The Bears Through 6 Games Chicago Sun-Times
Analyzing The Bears Through 6 Games – Chicago Sun-Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/analyzing-the-bears-through-6-games-chicago-sun-times/ One-third of the way through the 18-week season — the Bears play 17 games and have one bye —Sun-Times reporter Patrick Finley issues a report card: What is Matt Eberflus’ grade through 6 games? C. As expected— and demanded by his H.I.T.S. system — Eberflus coaches a team that plays hard on every snap. They’ve yet to fracture despite a disparity in performance between the defense, which is competent, and the offense, which is not. But the Bears’ main goal this season is to develop Fields into a franchise quarterback —and they’re stuck in the mud on that front. Is Justin Fields getting better or worse? The numbers say he’s getting worse. Fields is averaging fewer yards per game and has a lower passer rating this year than last season. His sack rate and interception rate are higher this year than last. The Bears, though, are treating this season as a 17-game test, and quarterback growth is rarely incremental. If Fields can figure it out — and if his coaches can find the best way to use him — those numbers can flip quickly. What is one change the Bears must make offensively? The Bears need to find a way to better protect Fields schematically. That means more screens and quick throws, play-action passes that get him moving and cut the field in half and — yes — handing the ball off on some obvious passing downs. The only thing worse for the franchise than Fields struggling is him sitting on the sideline, injured. They must find a way to get him to Week 17 intact. What is the biggest problem facing the Bears overall? The same problem facing them in March and August —and one that they’ll still have to deal with in November, December and January: they lack the offensive playmakers to properly evaluate Fields. Velus Jones’ fumbles aren’t making their decision to pass on drafting a receiver in Round 2 look any smarter. What has been the best surprise? This season is about finding players who can star on the next good Bears team. Running back Khalil Herbert has proven he can start in 2023 and beyond. Whathas been the biggest disappointment? Defensive end Robert Quinn has one sack after setting a franchise record with 18.5 last year. Quinn is one of the few valuable pieces the Bears could trade by the Nov. 1 deadline. They need him to show signs of life first. What is your revised prediction of the Bears’ final record? Still 6-11. If we’ve learned anything about the NFL this season, it’s that, short of a half-dozen teams, anyone can be mediocre in a given week.

Leisure Travel Is A Top Priority, Even During A Recession – Equities News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/leisure-travel-is-a-top-priority-even-during-a-recession-equities-news/ Tom Barrett | Unsplash More than half of all Americans see leisure travel as an important budget priority right now, even as an economic recession looms around the corner, according to the results from a new survey. Responding to a questionnaire conducted by Destination Analysts in September, 54.4% of Americans said that travel was either an “extremely high,” “high” or “somewhat high” budget priority in the next three months. By comparison, nearly a quarter of participants said that travel was not a priority at this time. Click to enlarge Further, a huge majority of American travelers don’t seem too dismayed by the likelihood of a recession. In response to another survey question, roughly three quarters of participants (74.8%, to be precise) said they believed travel was a “worthwhile” investment, even if the economy were to contract. Late fall and early winter are popular times for many Americans to hit the road or take to the skies, and this holiday travel season may be no exception. Over a quarter of survey respondents said they had plans to take a trip in October (26.6%), November (24.8%) and/or December (28.4%), despite higher prices for gas and airfare. Click to enlarge Traveling in Luxury Destination Analysts also make note of so-called “luxury travelers,” who represent some 27% of the U.S. traveling population. Over the next 12 months, the average luxury traveler is expected to spend $6,260 on his or her trip, or $2,000 more than the typical American traveler. Compared to other Americans, luxury travelers are more likely to prefer flying commercial over driving, and they’re also more likely to take cruises. Investors may see Carnival Cruise Line’s (CCL) decidedly unremarkable stock performance—it recently hit a 30-year low—and figure that the entire cruise line industry is in trouble. But as one equity analyst put it, Carnival’s problems are “company specific.” The Miami-based company is overexposed to Europe, “where currency, Covid-19 and a softer economy are impacting close-in bookings,” says Steven Wieczynski, managing director at Stifel. Indeed, Carnival is down more than 21% for the three-month period through October 5, while its competitor Royal Caribbean Cruises (RCL) has increased almost 20%. Click to enlarge Wieczynski is nevertheless bullish on the cruise industry and, in fact, issued a “buy” recommendation for Carnival, with a target share price of $17. On Monday, shares of the company traded below $7, its lowest point since February 1992. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCLH), the No. 3 U.S. operator by market cap, announced this week that it would remove all testing, masking and vaccination requirements related to Covid effective October 4. The company’s decision is expected to be welcomed by travelers who may have been waiting on the sidelines for the past two years. “Many travelers have been patiently waiting to take their long-awaited vacation at sea, and we cannot wait to celebrate their return,” stated Norwegian CEO and president Harry Sommer. An Economic Engine I believe this is all very positive news, no matter how you look at it. The domestic travel and tourism industry is estimated to account for a not-insignificant 7.6% of the U.S. economy. From a loss of almost $766 billion in 2020 due to the pandemic, the industry appears set to contribute $1.8 billion by the end of 2022, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC). Millions of Americans depend on travel and tourism for their livelihood. In 2019—the most recent year of data—the industry supported one out of every 20 jobs in the U.S., either directly or indirectly. The airline industry alone employed approximately 770,000 Americans as of June 2022. Will you be traveling this fall or winter? Join the conversation by visiting our Twitter page here! The Fun Fit 5 Pilot Project: Reaching New Horizons? Times Of Malta
The Fun Fit 5 Pilot Project: Reaching New Horizons? Times Of Malta
The Fun Fit 5 Pilot Project: Reaching New Horizons? – Times Of Malta https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/the-fun-fit-5-pilot-project-reaching-new-horizons-times-of-malta/ The European Week of Sport, promoted between September 23 and 30, was launched in 2015 by the European Commission, and was created mainly in response to the rising incidence of sedentary living across all age groups. Research in the field of physical activity has shown this “crisis” is adversely affecting young children, resulting in reduced quality of basic motor skills and stunted physical literacy development. The latest Malta Childhood National Body Mass Index Study showed that approximately 40 per cent of school-aged children are obese or overweight. The latest Malta Childhood National Body Mass Index Study showed that approximately 40% of school-aged children are obese or overweight In light of this worrying statistic, schools have a vital role to play, not only in promoting healthy living and educating students about healthy eating, but also to actively embrace programmes through which children can increase their participation in physical activity within school hours. It was in this context that the Fun Fit 5 pilot-project was conceived as a branch of the Inħobb il-Futbol Foundation (IFF), spearheaded by Ivan Woods (head of Grassroots Development) and Mark Gatt (Football in Schools coordinator) on behalf of the Malta FA. The terms ‘fun’ and ‘fit’ represent the original fundamental guiding principles underlying the project series, with the number five representing the goal of physical activity participation not less than five days a week. The programme will involve five, 45-minute sessions per week, with Year 4 students, in three Maltese government schools. Researchers will investigate in what ways, if any, the daily physical activity programme affects the children across the academic, physical and psychological well-being domains. Each physical activity session will be carried out at moderate to vigorous intensity and contributes to 75 per cent of the overall average of 60 minutes per day recommended by the World Health Organisation. The sessions will be delivered by three coaches representing the IFF: Franco Agius, Philip Attard and Nicole Sciberras. Their work will help address the recommendations of the National Audits Office that schools should place greater emphasis on the quality of structured physical activities. The research team working in conjunction with the IFF is comprised of four researchers from the Institute of Community Services at the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology: Melanie Darmanin, Renzo Kerr-Cumbo, Matthew Muscat Inglott and Heathcliff Schembri. Their research, which is essentially structured as a large-scale experimental study, will test for measurable effects of the physical activity programme on the children physically, academically and psychologically, as well as explore challenges and benefits from the unique perspectives of students, parents/legal guardians, coaches and members of staff themselves. Karl Attard from the Malta FA will be assisting the researchers throughout. The FF5 pilot-project which was launched at a press conference on October 1, was addressed by the Minister for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima, Malta FA general secretary Angelo Chetcuti and MCAST principal James Calleja. Gareth Sciberras, chairperson for Inħobb il-Futbol Foundation, was among the distinguished guests and gave additional details about the FF5 programme, along with the rationale behind it. The education officer for physical education in schools, Marvin Spiteri, elaborated on the logistics of the FF5 programme, and described the selection process for the three participating schools. Melanie Darmanin finally gave a thorough explanation of the research study itself. The FF5 pilot programme, which will commence in the selected schools this month, ultimately aspires to bring about “winds of change” through its innovative and evidence-based approach, in the way physical activity is understood, prioritised and organised in Maltese schools. Real Madrid Vs. Barcelona Live Score, Updates, Highlights For El Clasico As Ferran Torres Pulls One Back For Barca – Sporting News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/real-madrid-vs-barcelona-live-score-updates-highlights-for-el-clasico-as-ferran-torres-pulls-one-back-for-barca-sporting-news/ Real Madrid welcomed Barcelona to the Bernabeu with plenty to lose at the top of the La Liga table, but Los Blancos emerged with all to gain as goals from Karim Benzema, Federico Valverde, and Rodrigo secured a 3-1 victory. Instead, it’s Barcelona who leave Madrid with yet another black eye, following the midweek Champions League calamity that likely sees them out of Europe’s top competition. With the victory, Real Madrid take control of the La Liga title race, moving three points clear at the top of the standings. Barcelona are passed, only in the lead on goal differential before kickoff at the Bernabeu. Karim Benzema was the first on the scene for Madrid, bagging the opener just 12 minutes in. He made way for others in the team, as big-game star Federico Valverde doubled the lead past the half-hour mark with a solid long-range strike. After halftime, Barcelona pushed hard to get back in the game, and Real Madrid hung on until Ferran Torres brought the visitors back within one after great work from Ansu Fati. Yet it was not to be, as Real Madrid ran to victory as Rodrygo deposited a dubious penalty in stoppage time to secure the points. The Sporting News followed the Real Madrid vs. Barcelona match live providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happened.  MORE: Barcelona on the cusp of elimination after Champions League slip at Camp Nou Real Madrid vs. Barcelona final score   1H 2H Final Real Madrid 2 1 3 Barcelona 0 1 1 Goals: 12th min — RMA — Karim Benzema 35th min — RMA — Federico Valverde 83rd min — BAR — Ferran Torres 90+1 min — RMA — Rodrygo (pen) Real Madrid vs. Barcelona live updates, highlights from El Clasico FULL-TIME: Real Madrid 3-1 Barcelona The final scoreline flatters Madrid a bit, but they won’t care as Carlo Ancelotti secures the three points at home in El Clasico. It’s a fair result, as Madrid were dominant throughout the first half and held on down the stretch, buoyed by the late Rodrygo penalty. Barcelona, meanwhile, suffer a double blow after the midweek Champions League disappointment to Inter. 90th min: Penalty, Real Madrid! There’s a VAR check here for a penalty, with Rodrygo going down in the penalty area. Replay shows very little contact with Eric Garcia, but there is some contact. The referee goes to the monitor, and a penalty is given! It’s SO soft as Rodrygo had already gone over the ball, and there’s a shout for offside on the delivery from Valverde as well, but the referee points to the spot. GOAL! REAL MADRID! Rodrygo steps up and delivers from the spot to put Madrid through with all three points! Ter Stegen chose correctly, but couldn’t reach it. Sergi Roberto gets a yellow card for dissent in the aftermath. 87th min: Chance, Barcelona! Madrid are hanging on by a thread! Sergi Roberto comes flying in to meet a de Jong delivery with his head, and it’s blocked, but Ansu Fati produces a stunning scissor kick that very nearly levels the match. Lunin was caught out of position, and he could only watch as the ball bobbled inches wide of the post. A nervy let-off for Madrid, who react by bringing on a masked Antonio Rudiger, with Carvajal coming off. 83rd min: GOAL! BARCELONA! It’s great work by Ansu Fati on the left flank who absolutely sends Eder Militao for a hot dog. He blisters a cross to Ferran Torres at the far post who’s completely unmarked, and he taps into the back of the net. Three Xavi subs combined on that goal, with Gavi winning the ball back in midfield. Game on! Ancelotti reacts immediately, withdrawing the booked Vinicius, with Rodrygo on in his place. Franck Kessie comes into the match, replacing young Pedri. Fresh legs for Barcelona as they earn a corner, which is immediately wasted. 78th min: Chance, Barcelona! The visitors are pushing hard for a goal, and Ferran Torres has been bright off the bench. Gavi generates a turnover in the attacking third and sets up Ansu Fati for a shot which stings just wide. Luka Modric is withdrawn, and it’s Eduardo Camavinga time for Real Madrid. Barcelona will have to buck over 50 years of history to come back and earn something from this match. It’s not looking good for Barcelona…#ElClasico #BBCFootball pic.twitter.com/S6RYx4LPLs — Match of the Day (@BBCMOTD) October 16, 2022 74th min: Chance, Barcelona! There’s a big penalty shout as Lewandowski goes down in the box, but no call from the official! The Barcelona striker splits Carvajal and Eder Militao, hitting the deck after lots of jockeying! Replay shows a ton of contact between Carvajal and Lewandowski, but there’s no clear and obvious error for VAR to act. It’s a 50/50 decision from the referee, and Real Madrid get away with it. Modric gets booked in the aftermath for a hard foul in midfield on Pedri. The official has had to talk Xavi down after his demonstrative protests, but the Barcelona boss does not see a card. 72nd min: A great run by Dembele horizontally across the penalty area wins a dangerous free-kick as he buys a foul by Tchouameni. Lunin sets the Real Madrid wall, as Jordi Alba and Lewandowski stand over the delivery…it’s the Polish striker who takes and he blasts it straight into the middle of the wall. Straight after, Jordi Alba cuts down Kroos on the break and somehow gets away without a yellow card. Ousmane Dembele is taken off for Ansu Fati, and the Frenchman sulks as he exits, walking straight past Xavi without an acknowledgement as he heads to the bench. 68th min: Great defending by Eric Garcia was required as Modric fed Benzema through on goal. The Barcelona defender marshaled the ball out of play with good strength against the French striker, but at the death Benzema wins a corner. Troubling, though, that yet another vertical ball through the lines nearly broke the Barcelona defensive structure. 64th min: Vinicius looks to get on the end of a heavy through-ball from Benzema, and the ball runs to the goalkeeper ter Stegen, who takes a painful lump from the Brazilian on his way through. Vinicius has to be careful, as he’s on a yellow from the first half. Wonder if Carlo Ancelotti makes a change soon to prevent a second booking. Ter Stegen looks to be ok eventually, he was holding his hands after that collision. 62nd min: It’s all a bit sloppy from Barcelona as they search for a way back in. Gavi comes barging in out of control, committing a foul in midfield. Earlier, Ousmane Dembele had charged forward on the ball but Vinicius comes in with excellent defending to just muscle the Frenchman off the ball. 57th min: Xavi is readying a host of changes. Looks like Ferran Torres, Gavi, and Jordi Alba will come on, with Busquets, Raphinha, and Alex Balde the ones to be withdrawn. Ole’s ring around the crowd with Madrid pinging passes around the Barcelona half. The Madridistas are loving this. Sergio Busquets withdrawn on the hour mark for Barcelona. He’s looked cooked over the past week. Totally off the pace. A sterling career likely coming to an end soon. — Kyle Bonn (@the_bonnfire) October 16, 2022 52nd min: Chance, Real Madrid! Karim Benzema scores an utterly spectacular goal, bursting into the middle of the attacking third and picking out the far corner past a diving ter Stegen. However, the flag is up for offside, and replay shows Benzema is just leaning by inches on the delivery by Vinicius the left flank. The goal won’t count, but the Barcelona back line is carved to pieces with just one pass yet again. It’s another cross-field run that does them in, completely unaware of runs off the full-back’s back shoulder, and then nobody closes down the attacker at the top of the 18-yard box. The same mistakes from the first half show up again. Lmao nobody even closing Benzema down just letting him run at goal wth is this man. lucky to be offside — Abe (@FIFA_Abe) October 16, 2022 Watch in the USA: This Benzema goal was called off pic.twitter.com/c5KVXGPi6Z — ESPN+ (@ESPNPlus) October 16, 2022 51st min: It’s been a slow start to the second half, and while Barcelona have had the most possession, it’s Real Madrid with the first half-chance. Benzema finds Kroos with a cut-back, but it’s a difficult chance from range at a tight angle, and the German rifles over the bar. 46th min: We’re under way for the second half. Xavi, already under pressure as Barcelona manager after the Champions League calamity midweek, now has a mountain to climb to get the Blaugrana back in this match. No changes yet from the visiting side as the second half begins. HALFTIME: Real Madrid 2-0 Barcelona It’s a shocking first 45 minutes from Xavi’s side. They were second-best on both ends of the pitch, stifled in the attack and torn apart at the back. Real Madrid’s big-game players have shown up at the Bernabeu. Karim Benzema opened the scoring, and Federico Valverde doubled the lead. Just how Carlo Ancelotti drew it up after playing the game down as “not life or death” in the pre-match buildup. Xavi wanted his players to get back to “having fun” on the pitch, but Madrid are the ones who look to be enjoying their football. Karim Benzema has a date with the Ballon d’Or tomorrow, but has had one more say on today’s proceedings before heading to Paris for the ceremony. Ballon d’Or loading? pic.twitter.com/Cnb6Aw2tIz — ESPN+ (@ESPNPlus) October 16, 2022 43rd min: Barcelona venture forward, and they create a headed opportunity in front of goal for Lewandowski, but he’s double-teamed by Militao and Carvajal and is bullied off ...

Meta Introduces A $1,500 Metaverse Headset …And Other Small Business Tech News This Week – Forbes https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/meta-introduces-a-1500-metaverse-headset-and-other-small-business-tech-news-this-week-forbes/ © 2022 Bloomberg Finance LP Here are five things in technology that happened this past week and how they affect your business. Did you miss them? 1 – The Meta Quest Pro is a $1,500 virtual-reality headset for working in the Metaverse. Meta is releasing a new headset known as the Meta Quest Pro. This virtual-reality headset costs $1,500 and is designed for those looking to work in the Metaverse. Although the headset has facial-expression tracking and high-quality visuals, experts say it unfortunately has a short battery life. (Source: WSJ) Why this is important for your business: I’m a big believer in the Metaverse and truly believe that it will have an enormous impact on how business is done in the coming years. But based on this report, the Meta Quest Pro is a miss. I don’t see any sane manager or employee wearing these things without undergoing withering abuse from their colleagues. The Metaverse will happen when there’s a more user-friendly way to get on it – like a normal pair of glasses that can switch us between both worlds. Easier said than done, but that hardware will eventually happen. 2 – GoDaddy is offering small business training and networking at the Baltimore GoDaddy Open on October 19th. On October 19th, the Baltimore GoDaddy Open will offer training and upskilling to small businesses. The open will be free to anybody who wishes to attend and will include educational events and classes in critical areas such as growing a business, developing digital skills, and marketing. Those interested must register online at GoDaddy.com/Baltimore. (Source: Yahoo Finance) Why this is important for your business: According to its press release “in February 2022, GoDaddy activated its global social impact program in Baltimore with local nonprofit partner Impact Hub to help accelerate and equip entrepreneurs from underserved communities with the digital resources they need to do business in the modern era. The Empower Baltimore program consists of working directly with cohorts of local businesses. Through learning intensives, self-guided courses, business strategy development and complimentary website products from GoDaddy, it impacts local employment, strengthens the local entrepreneurial ecosystem, and improves the digital footprint of Baltimore’s small businesses. The program is free, as long as you can withstand the future marketing promotions you’ll inevitably received from hosting service. But the content is valuable, particularly for non-tech-savvy entrepreneurs. 3—Sift is launching a major update for the Microsoft Teams app to help amplify online meetings. People directory provider Sift has announced significant updates to its Microsoft Teams app. The update – known as Sift for Teams V2.1 – will now enable those present in meetings to get to know more about attendee work location, name pronunciation, interests, project teams, and more. Users can now download the updated Sift Teams app through online marketplace Microsoft AppSource. (Source: PRNewsWire) Why this is important for your business: This is a valuable and affordable tool for enhancing your Teams meetings and one of many good apps for Teams and other Microsoft products to be found on AppSource that will help increase your people’s productivity. 4 – Weave is adding new features to its online scheduling tool. Weave recently announced new features for its Online Scheduling tool. The all-in-one customer engagement and communication platform for small business will now have the added compatibility integration with top management systems in the optometry and dental fields. When an appointment is confirmed, Weave will immediately create the appointment on the calendar of the integrated system and send users a text notification. (Source: MarTech Series) Why this is important for your business: If you’re in the dental, medical, optometry or veterinary service industries you’ll be interested in this very powerful platform for not only scheduling but also forms, phone integration, payments, insurance verification and many of the other functions that can be automated in your practice. Weave has been a popular product among many businesses in these fields. 5 – This ‘thermal attack’ can read your password from the heat your fingertips leave behind. Researchers in the computer security space recently shared that they’ve created a system powered by AI that is able to guess smartphone and computer passwords in mere seconds. The system works by simply analyzing the heat signatures left by fingerprints on screens and keyboards after punching in passwords and other data. (Source: ZDNet) Why this is important for your business: The researchers built this application to illustrate how the fall in the price of thermal-imaging technology and the rise in AI and machine-learning algorithms open up new avenues to thermal attacks. So what to do? “Longer passphrases take longer to type, which also makes it more difficult to get an accurate reading on a thermal camera, particularly if the user is a touch typist,” one of the researchers told ZDNet’s Danny Palmer. The researcher also suggested that biometric verification also adds protection.

RC toys can range from water-shredding boats to aerial drones. When searching for an RC toy, consider what kind of vehicle or figure you’d like to control with a remote, and take note of what it takes to operate them. A drone, for example, may require proper licensing to operate, depending on its use. Those adults searching for reliable RC toys may remember that these gadgets sometimes require a large number of batteries to operate. That’s not always the case today. Many modern RC toys rely on rechargeable batteries to operate. Take battery life and operation into consideration when shopping for RC toys to understand how much playtime you can get with them. It’s vital to pay attention to suggested age recommendations for each product and consider the edges of a toy if buying one for a child. Anything that’s jagged may pose a risk of injury. Blockwiz Disrupts The Market By Launching Crypto Influencer Campaigns At Cost Price – NewsBTC https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/blockwiz-disrupts-the-market-by-launching-crypto-influencer-campaigns-at-cost-price-newsbtc/ Blockwiz, a web3 digital marketing agency based out of Canada has decided to help all web3 projects that are struggling in the bear market by launching KOL services at cost price for this quarter. The idea is to help the industry grow even in one of the worst bear markets that the industry is facing. Among the most trusted and acclaimed crypto marketing companies, Blockwiz has been in business for more than 2 years and has assisted over 350 crypto projects. The firm has shown relentless effort by not only growing during the crypto bear market, but also by helping many projects realize their true potential during such tough times. Now, Blockwiz is all set to take the crypto market by storm, yet again. Blockwiz’s KOL & Crypto Influencer Campaigns at Cost Price Initiative “Blockwiz was launched with the aim to deliver creative solutions to the most exciting blockchain projects. While the 2022 crypto bear market trampled many projects, our vision is to keep on going and promote those projects that really deserve to be noticed. The general idea behind offering KOLs and crypto influencer campaigns at cost price is to help genuine, reliable projects reach out to their target audience with the help of renowned macro, micro, and nano-influencers.” – Dev Sharma, CEO at Blockwiz Blockwiz has disrupted the market by launching one of its most unconventional campaigns. The marketing agency is offering KOLs (Key Opinion Leaders) and crypto influencer campaigns at cost price to its clients. This is certainly good news for young and growing crypto projects as they can make the most out of this opportunity. With this campaign, Blockwiz aims to help authentic, credible projects grow by connecting them with KOLs at no extra costs. Blockwiz’s FUDless marketing approach is one of the core USPs of this campaign. The company wants project owners to feel insured against FUD. Not only can projects outshine their competitors by leveraging this opportunity, but also substantiate their place in the industry and grow exponentially during the ongoing bear market. Blockwiz’s Ideology Trust is indeed hard to come by, even in the trustless blockchain space. With so many new projects emerging across different blockchain networks, genuine players find it hard to make a stand in the market. This is where Blockwiz is offering endless opportunities to credible projects with its Cost Price campaign. From a flawless IDO strategy to utilize the full potential of liquidity decentralized marketplaces to individual events like airdrops, mints, etc. The marketing firm is opening ample avenues for projects to promote themselves in the best possible way and at no extra charges. Genuine projects can exploit this opportunity to reach their target audience, spread awareness, and build trust. Moreover, projects can boost their sales and make good on their investments with the help of Blockwiz. Overall, the marketing company is single-handedly offering crypto projects the means to boost their reach manifold. The Journey Ever since its inception, Blockwiz has been helping numerous crypto projects by providing them with innovative growth solutions. The agency has collaborated with hundreds of clients including Huobi, CoinDCX, GameStar Exchange, and many more. With its data-driven approach, Blockwiz has run many successful campaigns for its clients across numerous social media platforms. Bybit, a popular all-in-one cryptocurrency exchange and one of Blockwiz’s many clients, is a perfect example of how the marketing firm helps projects achieve their objectives. Through Blockwiz’s YouTube campaign, Bybit achieved more than 140 thousand views. Also, their KOLs and PR campaigns on Telegram and YouTube garnered 600 thousand viewers along with a CTR (Click-through Rate) boost of more than 16%. Blockwiz has also collaborated with Megaverse, a relatively young but highly sophisticated Polygon-based metaverse experience. The marketing agency’s influencer campaign for Megaverse yielded some really spectacular results. The campaign generated over 295 thousand views across numerous social media platforms and also boosted Megaverse’s Twitter and Discord growth by 600% and 80% respectively. Apart from that, the marketing firm has been working with KuCoin, another popular cryptocurrency exchange and one of Blockwiz’s oldest clients, to grow substantially since 2021. Blockwiz recently launched influencer marketing, PR, and content marketing campaigns for KuCoin and delivered beyond expectations. The campaigns led to more than 180 thousand views on YouTube, over 140 thousand likes on Twitter, and more than 2000 impressions on PR mentions. The results delivered by Blockwiz Cost Price campaign show how they can assist not only established but also new emerging projects. The crypto marketing agency has conducted more than 1800 campaigns till date and has over 1300 crypto influencers or KOLs in their portfolio. All this makes Blockwiz one of the leading marketing firms in the crypto or blockchain domain. Blockwiz’s Timeless Relationship with KuCoin Launched in 2017, KuCoin is one of the world’s leading cryptocurrency exchanges. The people’s exchange has more than 8 million registered users across over 70 countries and regions. Blockwiz and KuCoin have been collaborating since early 2021. During this almost two year old relationship, the marketing firm has helped KuCoin grow substantially. The very first influencer campaign Blockwiz conducted for KuCoin included dedicated YouTube videos from renowned influencers like Bitboy, Crypto Passion, Professor Crypto, and Up Next Crypto. Over the following months, the marketing company helped KuCoin connect with more KOLs including Mad Cripto, Crypto Profit, Startup Gyan, Crypto Ciervo King, Crypto Cieervo, Bitcoin Bro, Crypto Gems, and Flur BNB. Apart from that, Blockwiz has also been helping KuCoin with their PR campaigns. All these activities caused KuCoin’s market reach to skyrocket. While these hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of views and impressions are indeed a solid reason for this long lasting relationship, it’s also Blockwiz’s unending support towards their clients that compels them to stick with the marketing firm. “While the idea of hiring a marketing agency was overwhelming for us, Blockwiz’s marketing team, with all their ideas and plans, showed us what all can be achieved. Call it trust or faith, but Blockwiz showed all of us at KuCoin that our beliefs can become facts if we do what we are meant to do.” – Leo Xue, Global Marketing Manager at KuCoin About Blockwiz Founded by Dev Sharma in 2019, Blockwiz is a full-stack crypto marketing agency. Courtesy of Macy’s, Stringer / Getty Images for Macy’s, Inc. Toys R Us has returned for the holiday season this year, with pop-ups located inside Macy’s flagship stores across the country, including in the Bay Area. The region’s pop-ups officially opened Saturday at Macy’s in San Francisco’s Union Square and San Jose’s Westfield Valley Fair shopping mall. The department store is hosting nine days of in-store events to celebrate the popular toy store’s temporary return. “We hope Toys ‘R’ Us kids of all ages discover the joy of exploration and play within our shops and families create special memories together. The customer response to our partnership with Toys ‘R’ Us has been incredible and our toy business has seen tremendous growth,” Nata Dvir, Macy’s chief merchandising officer, said in a news release. The toy store chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in September 2017, and stores began closing in the Bay Area in 2018 amid a nationwide shutdown. Tru Kids Inc. bought the Toys R Us brand in late 2018, along with the Babies R Us and Geoffrey the Giraffe and Imaginarium brands, CNN reported, but an attempt to bring back several stores failed in January 2021. A few months later, WHP Global acquired Tru Kids. WHP and Macy’s announced a new partnership in August 2021, saying small toy stores would begin rolling out in 2022 at more than 400 Macy’s nationwide. They also announced that customers could begin buying toys online at macys.com/toysrus and toysrus.com. Macy’s announced this July that Toys R Us pop-ups would open at its flagship stores for the holiday season. The mini stores will have colorful fixtures stacked with toys, tables for customers and kids to play with the toys, and a life-size “Geoffrey on a Bench” for families to take a picture with, Macy’s officials said. The other flagship location in California is located at the South Coast Plaza shopping mall in Costa Mesa (Orange County). Jessica Flores is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
