US Delivers Proposal For Maritime Border To Lebanon The Washington Post
US Delivers Proposal For Maritime Border To Lebanon – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/us-delivers-proposal-for-maritime-border-to-lebanon-the-washington-post/ BEIRUT — The U.S. ambassador to Lebanon on Saturday delivered a maritime border demarcation proposal to President Michel Aoun and caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati on Saturday, as negotiations with Israel progress. Lebanon and Israel have been officially at war since Israel’s creation in 1948 and both countries claim some 860 square kilometers (330 square miles) of the Mediterranean Sea. Amos Hochstein, a senior adviser for energy security at the U.S. State Department who has been mediating between the two neighbors, last visited Beirut in September, where he expressed optimism after meeting with Lebanon’s president, caretaker prime minister and parliament speaker. Aoun’s office in a statement said U.S. Ambassador Dorothy Shea delivered a proposal from Hochstein during a meeting at the presidential palace in Baabda. President Aoun in an interview with local media last week said that the negotiations could soon come to a close “where we will obtain our right to extract oil and gas.” Lebanon and Israel both claim some 860 square kilometers (330 square miles) of the Mediterranean Sea. Lebanon hopes to unleash offshore oil and gas production as it grapples with the worst economic crisis in its modern history, plunging three-quarters of its population into poverty. A Lebanese official who attended the talks last month told The Associated Press that the proposal put forward by the U.S. envoy gives Lebanon the right to the Qana field, located partially in Israel’s domain. A part of it stretches deep into a disputed area. The official added that the main point now is how to draw the demarcation line in a way that stretches south of Qana. Israel set up a gas rig at its designated location at the Karish field. Israel says the field is part of its U.N.-recognized exclusive economic zone, while Lebanon insists Karish is in a disputed area. In July, the Israeli military shot down three unarmed drones belonging to Lebanon’s Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah flying over the Karish field. Hezbollah’s leader has issued warnings to Israel over the maritime dispute, saying that “any arm” that reaches out to steal Lebanon’s wealth “will be cut off.” The heavily armed group, which has fought several wars with Israel, has repeatedly said in the past that it would use its weapons to protect Lebanon’s economic rights. Hezbollah officials have however said they would endorse a deal reached between Lebanon’s government and Israel.

Lovecraftian Horror Is A Heavily Underrated Genre In Gaming EXputer
Lovecraftian Horror Is A Heavily Underrated Genre In Gaming EXputer
Lovecraftian Horror Is A Heavily Underrated Genre In Gaming – EXputer https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/lovecraftian-horror-is-a-heavily-underrated-genre-in-gaming-exputer/ When it comes to horror, games inspired by H.P. Lovecraft have a class of their own. Lovecraftian horror is the stuff of nightmares and madness, makes you feel small and powerless, and might even make you question your sanity. But you’ll love every second of it if you’re a horror genre fan. Some Lovecraftian-themed games are able to convey horror and mythos more effectively than others, while some games are only lightly inspired by it. Despite belonging to the horror genre, the Lovecraftian-themed games aren’t as popular as they should be. The only game inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft most people have heard about is Bloodborne. While it is a brilliant game from start to end and a personal favorite, there are just as many good games out there belonging to the same genre. Ludwig, the Accursed from Bloodborne. It is true that Bloodborne isn’t a fully Lovecraftian-themed game, but it is somewhat inspired by it. The game is able to fully convey the feeling of dealing with monsters that are truly the stuff of nightmares. However, there are many games, such as Stygian: Reign Of The Old Ones, Gray Dawn, and Call Of Cthulhu, that are Lovecraftian-themed games but are highly underrated. It is also true that not all Lovecraftian-themed games are scary. There aren’t that many, to begin with. While Remnant: From the Ashes is a reasonably popular co-op game, it does have its lows. The game features a pretty mediocre story, and the combat is clunky as well. However, the game features creatively designed bosses that are both terrifying to look at. A Lovecraftian-themed boss in Remnant: From The Ashes. There’s also Gibbous – A Cthulhu Adventure, a Lovecraftian-themed game that is a bit comical. The game’s story revolves around you trying to turn your cat back into a normal cat. After you’ve accidentally turned it into an abomination that can talk, it isn’t a bad game per se, but it isn’t as scary as you might expect some other games to belong to the same genre. Another excellent game that came out in recent years was The Sinking City. The game has a solid story where you play as a private investigator named Charles W. Reed. The private investigator is trying to solve the issues in the fictional town of Oakmont, where everything is a bit weird. During all this, you’re also plagued by terrifying visions as you try to uncover the city’s secrets. An Innsmouther from The Sinking City. Several other games are a treat for lovers of the horror genre. Amnesia: The Dark Descent is another Lovecraftian-themed game that is almost as good as it can get when it comes to horror. Some Lovecraftian-themed games are also quite popular, such as the Darkest Dungeons, Darkwood, and Don’t Starve. These games are still doing well, despite being released a couple of years ago. The point is that if you’re a horror genre fan and haven’t played any of these games, then you’ve been doing it wrong. Lovecraftian-themed horror games are some of the best ones in the genre. A lot is lacking in terms of a solid story and accurately conveying the myths in some games belonging to the genre. Some games are outright strategy or RPG games, but with Cthulhu-styled bosses and a lot of tentacles. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give other Lovecraft games a chance. People just getting into the genre might find the games confusing since everything seems so absurd, and it’s pretty easy to feel overwhelmed. But, absurdity is where it’s at when it comes to these eldritch horror games. The point of not knowing what you’re dealing with in a creepy environment has all the charm there is to it. How could I forget the Dead Space trilogy when talking about Lovecraftian-themed horror games? It is a great trilogy overall that is heavily influenced by the Lovecraftian mythos. A Dead Space Remake is also set to come out in the near future. If they haven’t already, fans of the horror genre should give it a chance. These games will likely make you question how insignificant you are in the face of a higher power. Indeed, you might not like all the games, but it is worth giving them a try. Do let us know your thoughts and opinions about Lovecraftian games in the comments below. Was this article helpful? Good job! Please give your positive feedback How could we improve this post? Texas Officials Claim About State Troopers Fentanyl Exposure Called Into Question Complex
Texas Officials Claim About State Troopers Fentanyl Exposure Called Into Question Complex
Texas Officials’ Claim About State Trooper’s Fentanyl Exposure Called Into Question – Complex https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/texas-officials-claim-about-state-troopers-fentanyl-exposure-called-into-question-complex/ Another day, another immediately-called-out claim from law enforcement asserting an improbable fentanyl tale. The latest example of this marathon of misinformation continuing despite those aforementioned swift callouts comes from the official Twitter account of the Texas Department of Public Safety, which said in a peculiarly constructed post this week that “one of our troopers became ill after being exposed to a substance” while searching a vehicle. The tweet in question, seen below, goes on to claim that NARCAN had been given to the trooper, who was later taken to a hospital. The DPS further claimed that “special agents” found what they described as “a substance in a container that tested [positive] for fentanyl.” Expectedly, the tweet spurred a slew of responses, including a must-read thread (see below) from a concerned reader pointing out not only the improbability of any claim involving this type of exposure but also the aforementioned peculiar wording of the post itself. Related Stories STORY CONTINUES BELOW The claim from Texas officials has received local news coverage, not to mention national pickups. To be clear, however, these cop-adored claims of exposure-based fentanyl incidents are built on a foundation of falsehoods. As pointed out amid recent coverage of the topic, hundreds of drug experts last year shared (and continue to resurface in the wake of similar stories) an open letter in response to “dangerous drug misinformation” about the opioid. Frequently noted by those working diligently to correct still-spreading misinformation is a 2021 study which showed that, per researchers, nearly all law enforcement officials interviewed for the study “wrongly believed that dermal exposure to fentanyl was deadly.” The false or misleading claims have continued this year, including with the recent push behind headlines alleging that so-called “rainbow fentanyl” was being targeted at children, which experts were again quick to point out as not something that is actually happening.

Butterfly Wonderland Hosts Book Signing Oct. 1 With Rob Schneider, Daughter Miranda For ‘Meara’s Storytime Book’ – Citysuntimes https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/butterfly-wonderland-hosts-book-signing-oct-1-with-rob-schneider-daughter-miranda-for-mearas-storytime-book-citysuntimes/ Stand-up comedian, actor and Arizona resident Rob Schneider, along with his 9-year-old daughter, Miranda, will be signing copies of their children’s book, “Meara’s Storytime Book” on Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon at Butterfly Wonderland at Arizona Boardwalk. The book is part of the movie “Daddy Daughter Trip,” which opened Sept. 30 and stars the father-daughter duo and was filmed in-part at Butterfly Wonderland. The charming hardcover will be available for purchase and the Schneiders will be on-hand to greet fans and autograph copies.  “We are so grateful Rob and his family are big fans of Butterfly Wonderland and are delighted to host them for a book signing event,” said Dee Mangulins, executive director of Butterfly Wonderland. “It was thrilling to have scenes filmed in the Conservatory and be a part of this wonderful family movie. We hope everyone comes out to Butterfly Wonderland to meet Rob and Miranda, gets their book signed – and heads to ‘Daddy Daughter Trip’ to see Butterfly Wonderland up on the big screen.” Schneider produces, directs and stars in “Daddy Daughter Trip” and filmed the entire movie in Arizona. Several of the state’s well-known landmarks play prominently in the movie including Butterfly Wonderland, where scenes were shot last summer. “Daddy Daughter Trip” debuted at Harkins Theaters on Sept. 30 and features a hybrid of live-action and animation that include characters that also fill the pages of “Meara’s Storytime Book.”  The family feature tells the story of Meara, a second grader (Miranda Scarlett Schneider) who dreams of a fun-filled spring break vacation her family can’t afford. Against the better judgement of her mom (Jackie Sandler) and with only coins in their pockets, her dreamer father (Schneider) decides to take her on a spring break trip anyway. After a series of misfortunate adventures, their vacation is saved when the duo meets a couple of famous travel bloggers (Monica Huarte and Migel Ángel Muñoz). Throughout her trip, little artist Meara sketches characters that are later made into a story book. Outside of the film, Schneider worked to publish a hardcover book to accompany the movie release. “’Meara’s Storytime Book’ is an extension of ‘Daddy Daughter Trip’ and is truly a keepsake of the movie,” said Schneider. “We so enjoyed making this movie in our new home state, Arizona, and love the beautiful scenes that were filmed at Butterfly Wonderland – a place that my family and I enjoy immensely. We are so proud of both the film and the book; we cannot wait to share them with everyone.” Book signing of “Meara’s Storytime Book” by actors and father/daughter Rob and Miranda Schneider will be at Butterfly Treasures Gift Shop inside Butterfly Wonderland at Arizona Boardwalk. The event is free; admission to Butterfly Wonderland is not required. Butterfly Treasures Gift Shop is located inside the lobby of Butterfly Wonderland. Books may be purchased at the book signing. The Schneiders will be meeting guests and signing books. Butterfly Treasures Gift Shop will sell autographed copies of “Meara’s Storytime Book” outside of the book signing events, though copies are limited. Make plans to get a copy soon.

PCOS In Teenage Girls: Identifying Sign And Symptoms, Lifestyle And Dietary Tips – Hindustan Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/pcos-in-teenage-girls-identifying-sign-and-symptoms-lifestyle-and-dietary-tips-hindustan-times/ Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS is one of the most common lifelong chronic health disorders that is known to affect women in their teenage and childbearing ages. It is a hormonal imbalance condition that causes heavier periods, irregular menstrual cycles alongside unexplained weight gain or difficulty in maintaining normal weight, acne and clogged pores on the face, excessive hair growth on face, chest or abdomen, affects the chances of pregnancy, causes metabolic disorders including type II diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, endometrial cancer, anxiety and depression. Although it cannot be completely prevented or cured, health experts insist that with early and multidisciplinary management approach of PCOS treatment, lifestyle management and timely psychological counseling, the consequences of PCOS in the later stages of life can be tactfully managed. Identifying signs and symptoms of PCOS In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Kavita Pujar, Senior Consultant – Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Kinder Women’s Hospital and Fertility Centre in Bengaluru, shared, “One of the major symptoms of PCOS is irregular or missed periods, which can lead to paused ovulation. In such cases, conceiving a child may become difficult, resulting in infertility. However, if irregular periods are managed during the early years of puberty, women can get pregnant without any difficulty.” She added, “The next major contributor to PCOS is the growing incidence of childhood obesity which is resulting in early puberty. Obesity can slow down metabolism and hence, cause hormonal imbalances, which again makes it difficult to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight range. For women with PCOS, skin problems are common owing to high androgen (male hormone) levels leading to increased production of sebum, which in turn, causes inflammation and bacterial growth on the skin. Teens with PCOS, with their unexplained weight gain, facial hair growth, acne, metabolic disorders suffer from poor self-image, profound psychological and social crisis that may need immediate attention and care.” Ways to tackle PCOS in teenage years Many stay unaware of this condition in the initial stages hence, the symptoms remain ignored or unattended. Dr Kavita Pujar suggested, “The first thing to do after experiencing the above-mentioned symptoms is to consult a Gynecologist. The symptoms must be assessed further using proper diagnostic tests and the right treatment as per the severity of the condition will be prescribed. PCOD can be treated and managed well with simple lifestyle alterations and following a healthy way of living. Many are advised to take oral contraceptive pills to reduce acne and other symptoms, regulate their menstrual cycle; some are also given diabetic medicines to manage their metabolic health and keep their blood sugar levels under control.” According to her, few lifestyle and dietary tips that can make a difference include: 1. Choosing healthier food and following healthy eating habits 2. Cutting down calories with more balanced and nutritious meal intake 3. Eat according to hunger levels 4. Planning meals early can help make better choices 5. Staying adequately hydrated 6. Regular exercising through sports, aerobics, and fitness programs to stay physically fit, to build muscle mass and burn excess body fat and not only to burn calories 7. Practice yoga and meditation regularly for better psychological health 8. Maintaining a proper sleep cycle for at least 6-8 hours 9. Intake of hormonal medicines prescribed by the consulting doctor at suggested times 10. Stay away from stress to keep cortisol and insulin levels under control Asserting that making simple lifestyle changes can help manage PCOS better, Dr Kavita Pujar advised, “Opting for healthier meal options instead of foods made with refined flour or with high amounts of sugar, processed or packaged can make a significant difference. In some women, having gluten and dairy free food can provide much needed relief from inflammatory issues like acne or premenstrual syndromes, thus helping in maintaining healthy weight.” Coping up the right way PCOS can affect one’s self-esteem owing to the several physical changes and health issues it can cause and not every girl will have the similar symptoms and signs but in a nutshell, the problem remains the same. Dr Kavita Pujar explained, “It is necessary to take the right preventive measures to reduce the intensity of the physical symptoms and tackle emotional health better. Therefore, it is better to start small and have effective results thereafter. Post diagnosis, check with your gynecologist for medicines that can not only normalize menstrual cycle but also help control excessive hair growth or acne. These medicines essentially control the androgen levels in the body. If such hormonal medicines do not show much change, consult a dermatologist for further treatment.” She elaborated, “Feeling anxious or depressed also needs to be tackled tactfully. Talking to a therapist can help. Try to build a positive environment around them, listen to their problems and sort them out to build their confidence in themselves. Lastly, in most cases, despite identifying the signs and symptoms of PCOS, many women choose to self-medicate or delay treatment, which can in turn lead to health risks in future. It is, thus, advisable to consult a gynecologist at the onset of identifying symptoms and get treated on time.”

Texas A&M Vs. Mississippi State Live Stream, Watch Online, TV Channel, Kickoff Time, Odds, Prediction – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/texas-am-vs-mississippi-state-live-stream-watch-online-tv-channel-kickoff-time-odds-prediction-cbs-sports/ There’s more than one pivotal SEC West matchup Saturday and when No. 17 Texas A&M heads to the road to face Mississippi State in Starkville, Mississippi, there could be as much drama as the Alabama-Arkansas game. After all, the Aggies are trying to avoid a 3-2 start after sky-high preseason expectations, while the Bulldogs need a conference win with a brutal slate ahead. Since losing to Appalachian State, Texas A&M has recovered with back-to-back wins over Miami and Arkansas, respectively, but it has not always been pretty. Even after making the change to Max Johnson at quarterback, the Aggies have struggled to find the end zone. Things will only get worse with wide receiver Ainias Smith done for the year with a leg injury. The good news is the defense has been able to hold their opponents in check, and that will need to continue against Mike Leach’s Air Raid scheme. Mississippi State is still searching for its first SEC victory after falling apart in the fourth quarter against LSU. The Bulldogs need to find a way to win one soon because this game kicks off a difficult stretch that includes home games against Texas A&M and No. 20 Arkansas before going on the road to face No. 7 Kentucky and No. 2 Alabama. Two weeks after that, Mississippi State travels to Athens for a game against No. 1 Georgia. This is a critical game for head coach Mike Leach and his program. This matchup between SEC West foes could have a big impact on the standings at the end of the season. How to watch Texas A&M vs. Mississippi State live Date: Saturday, Oct. 1 | Time: 4 p.m. ET Location: Davis Wade Stadium — Starkville, Mississippi TV: SEC Network | Live stream: fuboTV (Try for free) Three players to watch Devon Achane, Texas A&M RB: With both Texas A&M quarterbacks struggling and Smith on the shelf for the rest of the year, the Aggies will be relying on Achane even more the rest of the way. He posted 1,171 yards from scrimmage and 10 touchdowns as a sophomore, and he is off to a good start in 2022. Through the first four games, Achane has 355 rushing yards, 71 receiving yards and four total touchdowns. If the Aggies are going to move the ball against Mississippi State, Achane will have to do most of the work. Will Rogers, Mississippi State QB: Following a strong sophomore campaign of his own, a lot was expected out of Rogers this year. Against Mississippi State’s three nonconference opponents, Rogers has completed 78.9% of his passes for 1,172 yards, 15 touchdowns and two interceptions. Against LSU, Rogers completed 57.1% of his throws for 214 yards with one score and a pick. He will have to take his game up a notch in order for the Bulldogs to take down the Aggies this weekend. Antonio Johnson, Texas A&M DB: Johnson is a highly touted prospect in the 2023 NFL Draft, and he landed at No. 15 overall in the latest mock draft by CBS Sports expert Chris Trapasso. So far, Johnson has given scouts a lot to like. He has amassed 38 total tackles, one tackle for loss and a sack. With the Aggies offense still trying to hit its stride, Johnson and the rest of the defense will have to pick up the slack and keep Mississippi State off the board. Texas A&M vs. Mississippi State prediction Odds via Caesars Sportsbook This is a battle of two relatively strong defenses, so the prediction will come down to which side is better on offense. With the Aggies’ lackluster quarterback play this season, and the injury to Smith, it’s hard to trust them offensively. Even though Rogers struggled against LSU in Death Valley, he should be better at home and is the far more proven signal-caller in this matchup. The Bulldogs put enough points on the scoreboard to win the game and cover the spread. Prediction: Mississippi State -3.5

Think The Metaverse Is Overrated? Walmart Has A Different View | Bill McLoughlin – Furniture Today https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/think-the-metaverse-is-overrated-walmart-has-a-different-view-bill-mcloughlin-furniture-today/ There is a stage in the evolution of any new technology or change to the traditional order where the naysayers come out in force. Remember when people said no one would shop online because they wouldn’t be willing to share their credit card information? Although that now sounds absurd, it was a real and ongoing debate at the time. As it turns out, consumers are willing to share a shocking amount of personal information online, happily, even eagerly. And many now expect that information to be accessed and acted upon to deliver a better online experience. Remember when people said Facebook was just for teenagers who wanted to share their every thought and activity? As it turns out, people of all generations want to do exactly that, across myriad social media platforms and in such large numbers that billions of dollars are spent reaching and selling them on those very platforms. But the metaverse? That apparently is a step too far. That’s just for gaming. That’s just for kids. That’s years, if not generations, away. Someone should have told Walmart. The nation’s largest brick-and-mortar retailer last week announced plans for not one, but two new immersive experiences on the metaverse platform Roblox. One, dubbed Walmart Land, will bring fashion, style, beauty and entertainment items to the global Roblox community of more than 52 million daily users. The other is called Walmart’s Universe of Play and will offer unique interactive content and entertainment for customers on Walmart’s ‘isles’ designed to visually mimic the retailer’s starburst logo. “Roblox is one of the fastest growing and largest platforms in the metaverse, and we know our customers are spending loads of time there,” said William White, chief marketing officer. “So, we’re focusing on creating new and innovative experiences that excite them, something we’re already doing in the communities where they live and, now, the virtual worlds where they play.” It’s worth noting that White clearly is drawing the connection between the physical world in which Walmart currently operates and the virtual one that represents the future. The retailer’s new Roblox initiative will allow users to win and purchase virtual goods or “verch” that can be used within Walmart Land and will also connect them to physical products that can be bought with good old fashion currency. While initial effort is aimed at consumers in Roblox’s 17- to 34-year-old core demographic and the types of product they’re looking for at this life stage, it’s clear that Walmart recognizes where it will find its next generation of customers and is not waiting for them to find its stores. And for those naysayers who point to the current generation of virtual reality headsets as a potential barrier to consumer entry it’s worth noting that Walmart’s Universe of Play, like Roblox, can be accessed on any device including PC, Mac, iOS, Android, Amazon devices, Xbox consoles, Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. The future is inevitable. Being relevant to consumers in that future is up to you. Indian Crypto Exchange WazirX Lays Off 40% Of Its Employees: Sources – CoinDesk https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/indian-crypto-exchange-wazirx-lays-off-40-of-its-employees-sources-coindesk/ Amitoj Singh is CoinDesk’s regulatory reporter covering India. He holds BTC and ETH below CoinDesk’s disclosure threshold of $1,000. Indian exchange WazirX has laid off several employees, the company said in a statement shared with CoinDesk on Saturday. 50 to as many as 70 employees or 40% of the exchange’s workforce of 150, were laid off, three sources familiar with the matter told CoinDesk. The laid off workers were told on Friday they would be paid for 45 days, they would not be required to report for work henceforth and their accesses were withdrawn simultaneously. “The crypto market has been in the grip of a bear market because of the current global economic slowdown,” WazirX said in a statement on Saturday. “The Indian crypto industry has had its unique problems with respect to taxes, regulations and banking access. This has lead to a dramatic fall in volumes in all Indian crypto exchanges.” “As India’s No 1. exchange, our priority is to be financially stable and to continue serving our customers,” the company said. “To achieve this, we’ve had to reduce our staff to weather the crypto winter. This situation is similar to the trying times the industry faced in 2018; at that time, we doubled down and built our innovative P2P engine. The crypto industry operates in cycles and the bear market is inevitably followed by a spectacular bull market. We will continue to focus on our customer needs and continue to build. We are confident that we will come out stronger when the bull market arrives.” One of the sources said “the workforce has been cut from several departments including customer support, HR, and other departments. Managers, Analysts, Associate Managers/Team leaders were among those laid off.” The entire public policy and communication team was fired, according to another employee who lost his job. “The company was never really forthcoming or transparent with its financial position, either when it was doing well or now,” said one of the WazirX employees who lost his job “abruptly” on Friday. WazirX daily trading volumes have been steadily declining from a one year high of 478 million on October 28, 2021 to 1.5 million on October 1, 2022, according to CoinGecko data. Trading volumes on some days have been lower than a million and “this is not enough to support operations,” the sources said. The decline in trading volumes began shortly after India’s implementation of harsh crypto tax laws in March, 2022, when WazirX Co-Founder Nischal Shetty told CoinDesk “we have entered a period of pain.” In recent days, the Indian exchange has been faced with a slew of problems including an online spat between Shetty and Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao about whether Binance is the parent company of the Indian exchange. Daily trading volumes were around 5 million around the time of the spat but after, its volumes dropped to less than 2 million, according to CoinGecko data. “During one all hands meeting after the online spat we were told we have decent reserves so we are financially safe,” two employees who were laid off said. WazirX has also been a target of a money laundering investigation launched by India’s Directorate of Enforcement, which included a raid against one of WazirX’s directors. Tailor-Made Lenses Available Through New Smart Technology – SHINE https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/tailor-made-lenses-available-through-new-smart-technology-shine/ Editor’s note: Smart medicine is the future of medicine. Information technology, artificial intelligence, and big data are becoming increasingly important in health care, which is becoming more human-centered and convenient. This series, which covers various aspects of the health field, is intended to demonstrate what high technology, smart systems, and inventions are capable of. Shot by Jiang Xiaowei. Edited by Sun Chao. Subtitles by Sun Chao. New smart technology is now being applied to provide tailor-made lenses in line with people’s more specific eyesight needs. It is helping to overcome the discomfort experienced by many people who use contact lenses that don’t ideally fit their eyeball shape or curvature, or rectify individual eyesight issues. “Whereas you can choose various sizes from a collection of ready-to-wear suits, you can also walk into a tailor’s shop and get a hand-made suit completely fitting your body shape,” said Dr Yan Yan from Shanghai Bright Eye Hospital. “Today’s smart medicine also means individualized and tailor-made therapies and services for better treatment effects. The eyes are a very delicate organ, so tailored products can bring much benefit to people,” Yan said. Jiang Xiaowei / SHINE The smart medicine system makes calculations to design a pair of orthokeratology lenses. An improved lens technology was introduced to China late last year and a few eye hospitals are now providing the fully digitalized services for devices such as an orthokeratology lens. Orthokeratology is a common overnight vision correction and corneal refractive therapy. By temporarily reshaping the cornea to reduce refractive errors such as myopia, farsightedness and astigmatism, it is popular for both children and adults. It is a viable alternative to eyeglasses, refractive surgery, or for people who prefer not to wear contact lenses during the day. “Usually, patients have their eyes checked in the hospital and then doctors select the lens style that suits them,” Yan said. “This digital technology collects nearly 10,000 pieces of data about the patient’s eyes and the computer makes a calculation for the most appropriate design of the lens. “Doctors then make adjustments based on a patient’s requirements and additional medical needs. The design is then sent to the manufacturer which produces the lenses.” Jiang Xiaowei / SHINE A tailor-made orthokeratology lens “The lenses are made in line with people’s own eye conditions, overcoming sensations of discomfort from wearing an odd item,” she said. “For children, the benefit is more significant.” In addition to tailored lenses, the smart technology is helping eye surgery to be safer and more accurate. A technology called iOCT, or intraoperative optical coherence tomography, a noninvasive imaging modality, is available in operating theaters. It provides real-time visualization of the ocular structure during surgery and supports the doctor’s decision-making throughout the procedure. “It is such a great improvement. The tool can be called the eye of eye surgeons,” said Dr Wang Fang, president of Shanghai Bright Eye Hospital. “Previously, we didn’t know about the patient’s eye condition without using imaging technology during surgery. Sometimes, the surgery itself could cause damage to the eye, which the doctors couldn’t see in time to adjust during the procedure, as the human eye can’t see such tiny problems,” she said. “Such imaging checks would be done in the outpatient department as it was impossible to move the patient out of the operating theater for a check outside. “As we couldn’t identify the condition until after the surgery was finished, patients sometimes had to undergo a second corrective surgery. “Thanks to iOCT, we can now have a very clear understanding of a patient’s eye condition during the surgery through receiving real-time information. Doctors can make changes or do repairs whenever the tool detects problems and thus avoid surgical damage,” she said. Thus, iOCT can significantly affect surgical decision making and cause a subsequent change in surgical strategy. “The system is an intelligent guide for surgeons.” In addition to eye surgery, Wang said iOCT is also expected to be used on stem cell and gene therapy procedures involving the eyes. NZXT Canvas 32Q Gaming Monitor Review: Style And Substance Meet Value Toms Hardware

NZXT Canvas 32Q Gaming Monitor Review: Style And Substance Meet Value – Tom’s Hardware https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nzxt-canvas-32q-gaming-monitor-review-style-and-substance-meet-value-toms-hardware/ Aside from a minor calibration flaw, the NZXT Canvas 32Q delivers a colorful picture with very high contrast. Low input lag makes it a solid performer for gaming and its large screen gives the user a lot of flexibility for both productivity and entertainment. Pros + Colorful image with high contrast + Reasonably accurate without calibration + Low input lag + Solid build quality and attractive styling + Good value Go to page: Features and Specifications Boutique gaming system and component maker NZXT has added high-performance displays to its product lineup with 27- and 32-inch screens. The Canvas line includes the 27Q (flat) and 32Q (curved) monitor, the latter of which I’ll review here. It runs at 165 Hz in QHD resolution and features a high-contrast VA panel with Adaptive-Sync, HDR, and a wide color gamut. You can get it in multiple combinations of white and black with either a stand or monitor arm. And the pricing is competitive with other established brands. Will it perform well enough to make it onto our Best Gaming Monitors page? Let’s take a look. NZXT Canvas 32Q Specs Panel Type / Backlight VA / W-LED, edge array Screen Size / Aspect Ratio 32 inches / 16:9 Curve Radius: 1500mm Max Resolution & Refresh Rate 2560×1440 @ 165 Hz FreeSync: 48-165 Hz G-Sync Compatible Native Color Depth & Gamut 8-bit / DCI-P3 Response Time (MPRT) 1ms Brightness (mfr) 300 nits Contrast (mfr) 3,000:1 Speakers None Video Inputs 1x DisplayPort 1.2 2x HDMI 2.0 1x USB-C Audio 3.5mm headphone output USB 3.0 1x up, 2x down Power Consumption 31.8w, brightness @ 200 nits Panel Dimensions WxHxD w/base 28 x 19.1-23.8 x 10.4 inches (711 x 485-605 x 264mm) Panel Thickness 4.4 inches (112mm) Bezel Width Top/sides: 0.4 inch (10mm) Bottom: 0.8 inch (20mm) Weight 18.6 pounds (8.5kg) Warranty 3 years With so many fast IPS screens coming out, I’m seeing fewer VA panels used in gaming monitors. This is unfortunate because they offer all the color and about three times the contrast of the best IPS monitors. NZXT uses a VA part in the Canvas 32Q, delivering nearly 4,000:1, which is higher than any IPS and many of the VA displays I’ve tested. This adds a lot of impact to both SDR and HDR content. The Canvas 32Q accepts HDR10 signals, though it does not use dynamic contrast or a high output backlight. But its HDR quality is still superior to rank-and-file IPS monitors that can muster 1,000:1 at best. The color gamut covers around 88% of DCI-P3, which is average among value-priced screens. Like most wide gamut displays, it comes up a tad short in the green primary. Blue and red are well saturated, and the Canvas 32Q is very colorful in all types of content. It’s accurate enough out of the box that calibration is unnecessary. I found it only needed a gamma tweak to deliver a good picture. Gaming performance is assured by a 165 Hz refresh rate, which is easy to meet in QHD resolution when driven by a mid- to upper-tier video card. Though pixel density is 93ppi, it renders a sharp image that works equally well for gaming or productivity. Its high contrast helps make fine detail and shades of color pop. The screen’s curve radius of 1,500mm is right in the middle, where there is no image distortion, but the curve is useful enough to immerse the viewer. And at 32 inches diagonal, there is a lot of height and width to fill one’s peripheral vision. The Canvas 32Q clearly has a gaming intent, though it saves the buyer a bit of money by leaving out speakers and LED lighting. However, solid build quality and reliable performance make it a decent value. Assembly and Accessories When you buy the Canvas 32Q directly from NZXT’s website, you can choose between a stand or an arm. The panel and stand come in black or white, so you can choose between four possible combinations. The stand adds $50, while the arm is $100 for a single and $170 for a dual model. The panel alone costs $400 in white or $380 in black. NZXT shipped me everything in black, along with a stand and an arm. All components assemble easily and quickly without the need for tools. The generous cable bundle includes HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, standard USB and an external power supply. Product 360 (Image credit: NZXT) (Image credit: NZXT) (Image credit: NZXT) (Image credit: NZXT) (Image credit: NZXT) The Canvas 32Q’s styling is simple and functional. The upright looks a bit like the flash suppressor from a machine gun with its rows of holes. Though slender, it is rock solid, with a thick metal plate serving as the base. Ergonomics include a 120mm height adjustment, 20 degrees swivel and 5/20 degrees tilt. There is no portrait mode. The back includes a 100mm VESA mount for whatever solution you choose. Also seen in the back is an OSD joystick and the NZXT logo proudly displayed at the top. The top view shows the 1500R curvature. It’s right between subtle and extreme, the perfect balance between immersion and image quality. There is no visible distortion, so you’ll be comfortable working on documents and spreadsheets with the Canvas 32Q’s large screen area. You can see the ample cooling grill that keeps internal temps to just above ambient. A little clip attaches to the stand for cable management. From the side, you can see the panel’s profile is thinner at the top. This portion is covered by a metal plate which further aids cooling. There are no speakers or side USB ports, but the Canvas 32Q does not skimp on connectivity. You get two HDMI 2.0, one DisplayPort 1.2, a USB-C serving as a video input and USB upstream connection. There are also a USB-B upstream and two USB-A downstream ports. You can connect headphones or powered speakers to the 3.5mm audio jack. OSD Features The Canvas 32Q’s OSD is super simple which I greatly appreciate. It only has four sub-menus plus a signal information screen. (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) (Image credit: Tom’s Hardware) All picture and game settings are packed into the Image menu. The first section has eight picture modes and brightness/contrast/sharpness along with three color temps, RGB sliders, three gamma presets and color saturation. The second half includes overdrive, a frame rate counter, MPRT (blur reduction via backlight strobe), low blue light and a black equalizer to make shadow detail more visible. My only beef here is the lack of numerical values for settings like brightness and contrast, RGB or volume. You can see the slider move up or down, but there’s no number there for later reference. I counted the clicks, and each slider has 100 steps making the center point 50. Other options like sharpness, saturation, low blue light and black equalizer have 10 steps. It’s unusual, but I got used to it after a time. In Other Setting, you’ll find the FreeSync toggle. This should be together with MPRT, but it’s not. Turning MPRT on cancels Adaptive-Sync as it does on most monitors. The backlight strobe has no fine-tuning available. It reduces brightness by around 25% and produces some slight phasing artifacts. The overdrive is very subtle in its operation, with no obvious ghosting. It reduces blur reasonably well. NZXT Canvas 32Q Calibration Settings The Canvas 32Q is accurate enough by default not to require calibration. I saw some slight green errors in the grayscale patterns I viewed, but the actual content looked very good, with natural color and tone. Gamma is too light on the default 2.2 setting, so I upped it to 2.4 for a visible improvement in depth and dimension. I could not improve the white point accuracy using the RGB sliders because they don’t act equally on all the brightness steps. My calibration consisted only of the change in gamma. Below are the brightness settings I used for commonly chosen output levels. HDR signals automatically switch the Canvas 32Q into HDR mode where I measured good accuracy for color and EOTF tracking. There are no picture adjustments available for HDR content, so you’ll have to confine your tweaks to any in-game options that are available. Picture Mode Standard Brightness 200 nits 55 Brightness 120 nits 25 Brightness 100 nits 18 Brightness 80 nits 12 Brightness 50 nits 1 (min. 48 nits) Contrast 50 Gamma 2.4 Gaming and Hands-on The first thing I always see when booting up Windows is the beach scene wallpaper, which is part of Windows 10’s default set of graphics. It has a brilliant blue sky reflected in the water, orange sandy rocks in the background, and a lone figure running along the beach. I always look at the color first, and the Canvas 32Q impresses with its bold and vivid hues. The extra contrast was obvious as I looked at the gentle waves that were clearly in the foreground, well ahead of the rocks behind. And the running lady is almost a silhouette, but some subtle details can be seen. For example, I could tell she was wearing three-quarter-length pants. The picture looks a tad soft with a pixel density of 93ppi if you like to sit very close to the screen. But the large screen is best used from three to four feet back. Then, you won’t see the pixel structure. The anti-glare layer does its job invisibly without causing any distortion or grain. The image is very sharp, with no apparent edge enhancement as long as the sharpness slider is left at 50%. Productivity apps look solid, with clear type and good contrast between black text and white backgrounds. Photo editing was easy enough, but since there’s no sRGB mode available, I had to use a software LUT when that gamut was needed. Watching video was a smooth experience, with no apparent stutter or cadence issue in YouTube content. I started my game time with Doom Eternal’s horde mode, which keeps the action moving non-stop. 4 Little-Known Perks Of Using A Travel Agent The Motley Fool
4 Little-Known Perks Of Using A Travel Agent The Motley Fool
4 Little-Known Perks Of Using A Travel Agent – The Motley Fool https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/4-little-known-perks-of-using-a-travel-agent-the-motley-fool/ Image source: Getty Images Booking plans through a travel agent could really be a smart move. Key points Using a travel agent means having to do less work yourself. But there are other benefits you might appreciate as well. Travel agents can offer firsthand experience with some destinations, and they can offer special deals consumers might not have access to otherwise.  We all need a getaway once in a while. And if your vacation plans have different components — a flight, lodging, and activities, for example — then you may be considering using a travel agent.  The clear benefit of a travel agent? Not having to do all of that work yourself. Your travel agent can find you flights on your preferred travel days, book your hotel stays, and make the process of planning a trip easier from start to finish. But that’s not the only reason to work with a travel agent. Here are some other perks you might enjoy. 1. You might get a firsthand account of what a given destination is like Travel agents often get access to free or heavily discounted trips so they’re able to stay at different resorts themselves. And so if you use one, you might benefit from getting a firsthand account of what a given property is like. Let’s imagine you’re trying to book an all-inclusive vacation in the Caribbean for your family. You may be worried that a given resort is poorly maintained or might not have a lot of food options for your children, who are picky eaters. If you work with a travel agent who recently spent several days at that resort, they’ll be able to tell you whether your concerns are valid. 2. You might get tips on activities that cater to your interests Because travel agents know a lot about the destinations they send clients to, using one could result in a more enjoyable travel experience. Imagine you’re an outdoor sports enthusiast. If you use a travel agent to book a trip, that agent might not only be able to recommend specific activities, but actually book them for you so you don’t have to worry about using reputable companies or not. 3. You might save a lot of money You might assume that using a travel agent will mean spending more money on your upcoming vacation and getting stuck with a higher credit card balance in the process. But you may find that the opposite is true — that your travel agent is able to save you money because they have access to deals and rates that regular consumers don’t have. Also, it’s a big myth that travel agents charge for their services. Travel agents often earn commissions via their bookings, but those commissions aren’t fees you’re responsible for. A resort, for example, might give an agent a certain percentage back for each booking they arrange. 4. You’ll get help if you run into an issue on your trip Imagine you’re vacationing on an island and a storm hits, forcing you to miss your flight home while you wait things out. If that’s a trip you’ve booked solo, you’ll need to call your airline and figure out a backup plan. But if you used a travel agent to book that itinerary, they’ll be the one to get on the phone with the airline and make alternate travel arrangements so you can get home. Clearly, there’s much to be gained by working with a travel agent. It pays to give one a try the next time you’re heading out of town. Boomers Are Flocking To Area’s Beautiful Golf Courses And Communities – Naples Daily News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/boomers-are-flocking-to-areas-beautiful-golf-courses-and-communities-naples-daily-news/ Moorings Park Communities  |  Special to Naples Daily News Mark Twain was once supposed to have quipped, “Golf is a good walk, spoiled.” It’s not a sentiment shared by too many of the sport’s many devotees. “Twain never had the opportunity to play on a Rees Jones-designed golf course,” smiles Tom Mann, Vice President and Senior Living Specialist for Moorings Park Communities, the area’s premier retirement destinations. “Our Moorings Park Grande Lake homes enjoy gorgeous views overlooking the Rees Jones-designed Naples Grande Golf Club. About 40 of our residents have become members. It’s just so convenient to take your golf cart there from here, and it’s one of the area’s most spectacular golf courses.” A Premier Golf Course For A Premier Community Rees Jones has an outstanding reputation in the golfing community. His golf course designs have earned him numerous awards, including Golf World Architect of the Year, the Golf Course Association’s Don A. Rossi Award, and a place in the Northern California Golf Association’s Hall of Fame. His firm has designed nearly two dozen courses in Florida alone, including Golf Club of the Everglades and Olde Florida Golf Club here in Naples. Moorings Park Grande Lake resident Larry McPherson and his wife, Chuckie, are avid golfers, and have organized groups in the community to take advantage of the Naples Grande convenience. “Rees Jones is a very respected golf course designer,” Larry points out. “This is one of his better courses in this particular area. “When we moved in, I organized a Wednesday golf group of Moorings Park Grande Lake residents,” he says. “We have a mailing list of 24 to 26 people. Every Wednesday morning there’s about 16 of us that play. In addition, other residents have organized Monday and Friday groups.” Chuckie helped start one of the two lady golfer groups. “I ran a group where we lived before,” she explains. “It just felt natural jumping in and doing something similar when we moved here. “The Naples Grande Golf Course is unique in that it has no homes on it, so it has a lot of natural beauty,” she adds. “It’s nestled in Naples, but you wouldn’t know it when you’re on the course.” You Don’t Have To Be A Golfer To Appreciate These Views “As far as I’m concerned, Naples Grande is a beautiful course,” he says. “Our fourth floor views from our residence at Moorings Park Grande Lake overlooking holes 16, 17, and 18 are spectacular.” The golf course sits just across the placid 28-acre Grande Lake from the Life Plan Community. “Every residence has incredible sunset views from their impressive lanais which are perfect for indoor/outdoor entertaining,” notes Mann. “And the views from residents’ kitchens, great rooms, and master bedrooms are absolutely glorious.” Though Moorings Park Grande Lake’s easy access to the picturesque Naples Grande Golf Club will no doubt be particularly appealing to golfers, the community’s unstinting attention to every detail of modern retirement living is appreciated by golfers and non-golfers alike. “You don’t have to play golf to enjoy the rich and rewarding resort lifestyle available to residents here,” Mann points out. “Life here appeals to Baby Boomers with a wide range of interests. “I’m sure we have a few fans of Mark Twain in the book club as well,” he chuckles. A Drive For Excellence The community’s Grande Lake Clubhouse offers over 200,000 square feet of resort-style amenities and residential living, and is unlike any other in North America. The Clubhouse hosts three restaurants which are sure to satisfy the most demanding diner: Zest Café and Bistro; Savor 26, an upscale, yet casual “go-to” with a playful menu; and BlueStone, the fine dining restaurant with an emphasis on prime meats, seafood, and overall cuisine. The Clubhouse also features a top-of-the-line TrackMan Golf Simulator, a fitness center equipped with modern pneumatic machines and personal trainers, and a theatre for movie nights, special performances and guest speakers. The Clubhouse’s airily elegant interior engenders a relaxing atmosphere that’s perfect for friendly get-togethers with your neighbors. “Of course, our community’s amenity-rich lifestyle also includes world-class, personalized health care and concierge physicians,” Mann adds. “The Center for Healthy Living ® located within the Clubhouse is also where you will find the Physicians’ Clinic and Outpatient Therapy services. Our attentive physicians are devoted to keeping you active and independent, with an eye on preventing small health issues from becoming big concerns.” Assisted living and memory care services are  also included in the Life Plan contract at no additional cost should you ever need them in the future. “As one of the nation’s only not-for-profits with A or A+ ratings by S&P and Fitch Ratings services, our residents are comfortable about the future, knowing that we are the most financially secure senior living organization in the country,” Mann explains. An Ideal Spot Publications such as U.S. News and Travel + Leisure have recognized that Naples is one of the best places in the country to live. Ideally located just off Golden Gate Parkway, Moorings Park Grande Lake is in the perfect location to enjoy all that Naples has to offer. Residents enjoy the auspicious adjacency to Naples Grande Golf Club, and are only a few miles from exquisite sugar-white beaches on the Gulf and popular 5th Avenue shops and restaurants. “Moorings Park Grande Lake is truly one of the nation’s best retirement destinations,” Mann says. “There is so much to Moorings Park Grande Lake that it can feel like a lot to absorb,” he adds. “From our gorgeous floor plans, to our partnership with London Bay Homes (which works with residents to customize their new homes exactly how they want them), to our 70% refundable entrance fees, there’s a reason the community has proven so popular. I encourage everyone who wants to learn more to visit us and see this gem of a location for themselves.” Experience A Taste of Luxury At Our Luncheon  Ready to do a little window shopping? Moorings Park Grande Lake will host a delectable Informational Luncheon on Thursday, October 6th at 11:30 a.m, hosted by Mann himself. This event is designed to give you a sneak peek of what the Grande life looks like with a look inside the social hub, the Clubhouse. To register for this delicious event hosted by Moorings Park Grande Lake, please visit MooringsPark.org/Events or call 239-232-3903.

That’s one of the questions we addressed on the first episode of Crypto IRL, a new Bloomberg Quicktake series. “I do think that certain executives of certain companies that lost millions, tens of millions, billions of dollars of consumers’ funds, they definitely have explaining to do,” Meltem Demirors, chief strategy officer at CoinShares, said on the show. “And I do think they’ll be held to account.” Over the course of eight episodes, Crypto IRL will sort through the rubble to assess what’s left standing and what’s ahead. Demirors says there could still be more pain, as crypto-mining companies struggle to stay afloat with asset prices declining and the cost of energy rising.  “The big part of the ecosystem I’m still concerned about is crypto miners,” she said. Watch Crypto IRL on Fridays at 8 p.m. New York time on Bloomberg Quicktake, and at 8:30 p.m. on Bloomberg TV. And it’s always streaming at www.bloomberg.com/qt.

Russian Timber Bypasses U.S. Sanctions Through Vietnam And China – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/russian-timber-bypasses-u-s-sanctions-through-vietnam-and-china-the-washington-post/ HO CHI MINH CITY, Vietnam — Russian birch wood has continued to flow to American consumers, disguised as Asian products, despite U.S. economic sanctions imposed on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, a new report says. The Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), a nonprofit watchdog group based in Britain, has found that most birch products currently being exported from Vietnam to the United States originate in Russia. According to Vietnam customs data, roughly 40,000 cubic meters of birch wood is transported every month from Russia and China into Vietnam, where it’s assembled into furniture and plywood. These chairs and bed frames end up on the shelves of major American retailers, the EIA said in a report, which was shared exclusively with The Washington Post. The group’s investigators spoke to five Chinese companies accounting for 60 percent of China’s birch veneer exports to Vietnam and concluded that over 90 percent of their birch is sourced from Russia. One Chinese wood factory owner told the group that all of the birch their company uses comes from Russia but is repackaged in China and re-exported to Vietnam with China listed as the country of origin. “They [American importers] don’t track sources of original materials,” the manager told the EIA. “We have been doing this all the time.” In June, Russia’s Federal Forest Management Agency asserted that the country’s timber industry has not been significantly affected by sanctions. “The Russian forestry industry complex has already been oriented toward friendly markets and, where the restrictions emerged, it has already partially realigned,” Pavel Chashchin, head of the agency, told Tass, a state-owned news outlet. “The process of establishing new export channels will continue.” In construction, birch harvested from Russia’s vast forests has long been considered the best source of plywood — a material used in floors, ceilings and partitions, as well as for decorative purposes on items such as doors and cabinets. Before the invasion of Ukraine, the United States imported hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of birch plywood from Russia annually, trade data shows. Driven by strong demand, these imports surged in the early months of 2022 before changing course in April, when the Biden administration raised tariffs on Russian birch from 10 percent to 50 percent. From March to April, even as direct U.S. imports of Russian birch plunged, birch plywood imports from Vietnam grew by 206 percent, said the Decorative Hardwoods Association, which represents American hardwood industries. Ngo Sy Hoai, vice president of the Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association, a nongovernmental trade organization in Vietnam, did not respond to questions on where companies are sourcing their birch, saying only that “Vietnamese plywood producers may import certain volumes of birch wood from various sources for plywood surfacing.” Phuc Xuan To, a senior policy analyst at Forest Trends who has studied Vietnam’s wood industry for years, confirmed the EIA’s findings. Sawed birch timber imports from China to Vietnam increased in the first half of this year, and it’s highly likely that birch originated in Russia, To said. Russian birch is also appearing under deceptive labels in markets outside the United States, according to advocacy groups. Companies in Britain have recently received more offers of birch “from the Far East,” said Timber Development UK, which represents companies throughout the timber supply chain in Britain. “Given that birch forests are concentrated in Northern Russia and Eurasia; it is almost certain the birch contained in the plywood being offered has in fact originated in Russia,” the trade association said in a statement warning members against running afoul of British sanctions. While China also exports birch, the EIA said the world’s biggest traders widely preferred Russian birch, which is seen as being more consistent and durable. In March, Earthsight, another watchdog group from Britain, reported that some of Russia’s largest forestry companies are owned by oligarchs with close ties to President Vladimir Putin. Mining tycoon Alexei Mordashov, who was blacklisted by the European Union in March, holds major assets in Sveza, one of Russia’s biggest exporters of birch plywood, Earthsight said. While Sveza’s direct exports to Europe have declined since the start of the year, company leaders recently told reporters that it has been actively redirecting supply to Asia and Africa. “I have absolutely nothing to do with the emergence of the current geopolitical tension,” Mordashov said in a statement in April. Telecommunications billionaire Vladimir Yevtushenkov’s family controls Sistema, parent company of Segezha, a logging firm that exports to the European Union and the United States. In April, after being sanctioned by Britain, Yevtushenkov gave up shareholder control over the Sistema conglomerate by transferring 10 percent worth of assets to his son. The Segezha group released a statement around the same time declaring that it did not consider itself affected by British sanctions. “Segezha Group continues its business as usual,” the statement said. Vietnam has strong political, defense and economic ties with Russia dating to Soviet times. At the U.N. General Assembly in September, Vietnam was among 35 countries that abstained from the vote condemning Russia for its attack on Ukraine. The abrupt increase of exports from Vietnam at a time of plunging Russian supply caught the attention of the EIA, which has been monitoring the relocation of Chinese manufacturers to Vietnam in recent years, said Alex Bloom, an analyst with the agency. “We were well aware from previous investigations that enormous amounts of Russian timber, particularly birch, are used in Chinese factories for exported plywood,” she said. “After American anti-dumping tariffs went into effect on Chinese hardwood plywood [in 2017], a lot of those Chinese factories migrated to Vietnam to avoid those tariffs.” Thomas Chung, an advocate at the EIA who focuses on Vietnam, said the repacking of birch described by Chinese companies not only violates U.S. trade rules and legislation but could also be considered illegal under Vietnam’s timber legality assurance system. “There is the requirement to know the origin of a wood product as part of a due-diligence process when importing timber or wood products into Vietnam,” he said. “This means that even when intermediary markets are used, the origin should be known. Any rebranding should be considered illegal.”

India Leads In Multi-Factor Authentication Adoption, Finds Thales Report – The Indian Express https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/india-leads-in-multi-factor-authentication-adoption-finds-thales-report-the-indian-express/ India is followed by Singapore and UAE. (Representative image vis Pixabay) A new cyber security report suggests that India has the highest growth rate when it comes to Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) adoption and usage.  According to the Thales Access Management Index 2022 conducted by the research firm 451 research,   India recorded a 19 per cent point rise, bringing MFA usage to 66 per cent compared to the global average of 56 per cent. It is followed by Singapore with a 17 per cent point increase and the UAE with a ten per cent point increase. In case you are unaware, Multi-Factor Authentication often referred to as MFA is a layered security system that requires users to use a combination of two or more credentials to log in using methods such as a PIN, password or OTP. As it turns out, MFA is also getting popular among internal and non-IT staff with the adoption rate increasing to 40 per cent compared to 34 per cent last year . The report goes on to say that while companies are still concerned about the security risks involved with remote work when it comes to secure access to data, applications and systems, more than 84 per cent of professionals working in the IT sector said they had some confidence in their company’s security system, compared to just 56 per cent last year. If we compare the global MFA usage, remote workers account for more than 68 per cent followed by 52 per cent privileged users. The Thales survey also asked companies about deployment plans for new access security technologies. The study reveals that more than 45% of total respondents were in favour compared to just 41 per cent last year. According to the survey, the COVID-19 pandemic had an effect on cloud-based access management as well, with adoption rising to 45 per cent from 41 per cent last year. © IE Online Media Services Pvt Ltd First published on: 01-10-2022 at 03:08:07 pm

Bill Everhart: Gaming Out Massachusetts State Elections | Columnists | Berkshireeagle.com – Berkshire Eagle https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/bill-everhart-gaming-out-massachusetts-state-elections-columnists-berkshireeagle-com-berkshire-eagle/ With the midterm elections about a month away, the polls have Democratic candidates well ahead in the races for Massachusetts state offices. While not a shock, it indicates a missed opportunity for Republicans if nothing changes. Massachusetts voters have demonstrated over the years that they are more than willing to elect Republican governors as a counterbalance to the Democratic Legislature — as long as that Republican is a sober moderate and not a fringe extremist. Knowing this, Republican primary voters chose as their candidate Geoff Diehl, a Donald Trump follower and anti-abortionist who trailed Attorney General Maura Healey 52 percent to 26 percent in a Suffolk University/Boston Globe/NBC10-Boston/Telemundo poll last month. While that margin may narrow, the poll reveals that roughly two-thirds of independent voters, who are critical to the election of any Republican, have an unfavorable opinion of Diehl, giving him little room for growth. Interviews with independents polled indicate that this is largely because of Diehl’s allegiance to Trump, who, based on his poor performance in two elections, is intensely unpopular in Massachusetts. The vote of independents, making up slightly more than half the electorate, may be as much anti-Diehl as pro-Healey. With outgoing Republican Gov. Charlie Baker enjoying a 70 percent approval rating according to the same poll, state Republicans have rejected the potentially successful path represented by gubernatorial candidate Glenn Doughty in favor of allegiance to a disgraced former president state voters can’t abide. Constitutional officers Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin’s lead in the polls over Republican challenger Rayla Campbell is heartening. Campbell has given no indication that she would be a defender of election integrity in the state. Campbell referred to Democrats as “rotten devils” at the Republican state convention, strongly suggesting she would not be an impartial arbiter of any election dispute. On her website, Campbell says she detects a “flavor of communism and socialism” in Massachusetts politics. This Cold War-era rhetorical nonsense is another indicator that Campbell would bring extremist ideology to an important job that should be nonpartisan. Galvin has been that, to the frustration of many progressive Democrats. In The Boston Globe recently, columnist Jeff Jacoby suggested that if voters want to maintain a semblance of two-party government they should consider a vote for Anthony Amore, Republican candidate for state auditor. The director of security at the Isabella Gardner Museum, Amore has experience in areas relevant to the position of auditor, some of it gained revamping Logan Airport’s security procedures following 9/11. He is opposed by Democratic legislator Diana DiZoglio, whom he congratulated even before her primary race was called. When this was pointed out to him by the Globe’s Samantha Gross on Twitter, Jacoby noted that Amore replied “Because we’re really good at data analysis. Key part of being an auditor.” A sense of humor is welcome in a candidate. So is a traditional Republican candidate not from the Trump wing. Berkshire candidate for Governor’s Council The route North Adams’ Tara Jacobs took to become the District 8 nominee for governor’s council is a remarkable one. The population base in the district is around Springfield, but the three Springfield-area candidates divided the vote and the North Adams School committee member cruised to victory. The only Berkshire candidate on the state ballot, she will face Republican John Comerford, of Palmer, in November. The Governor’s Council, a vestige of the beginning of state government, is only heard from when it messes up, which it did notably in 2013. The eight-member advisory board is also tasked with approving judicial nominees, and nine years ago five councilors from the Boston area rejected the nomination of Pittsfield attorney Michael McCarthy to a seat on the Southern Berkshire District Court. That happened even though the Berkshire political and judicial community had attested to McCarthy’s qualifications for the judgeship. The five councilors were not obligated to explain their “no” votes and none did so. If elected, Jacobs says she wants to bring transparency to the board. Should she cast some light on this shadowy society, she will have done a public service. U.S. House race At the federal level, in the First Congressional District, Democratic Rep. Richard Neal, who was first elected to Congress in 1988, has a rare Republican challenger in Dean Martilli, a West Springfield businessman. On his website, Martilli describes himself as a fiscal conservative who opposes judicial activism (though presumably not the kind demonstrated by the overturning of Roe v. Wade) and the selective application of the law. In the case of the latter, Martilli in a statement described the FBI’s court-sanctioned confiscation of documents former President Trump brought to Mar-a-Lago from the White House as the politicizing and weaponizing of the FBI. He claims Trump and his family are being threatened and harassed, adding “As Trump has said, ‘They are not coming after me, they are coming after you.’” Actually, they are specifically coming after Trump. The Trump defense team’s stonewalling of the investigation attests to the troubling removal of the documents and the casual nature of their storage in Florida. Shiloh Officials Seek County ARPA Money For Water System Improvements – Mansfield News Journal https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/shiloh-officials-seek-county-arpa-money-for-water-system-improvements-mansfield-news-journal/ Al Lawrence  |  Correspondent The Richland County commissioners received two more requests for American Rescue Plan Act funds that could put total pending requests over the county’s $23.7 million award. County Recorder Sarah Davis asked for just under $100,000 to upgrade the online search program for her office while Shiloh village officials requested $500,000 to help fund a $3 million water system improvement program that was discussed earlier this year. The Shiloh project includes replacing 1,500 feet of waterlines on Main Street and a number of side streets, installing water meters that can be read remotely from the office for some 275 customers, replacing fire hydrants and tearing down an abandoned water tank on Mechanics Street. Mayor Charles Reeder said the project will replace leaky waterlines that were installed in the early 1940s and comply with an Environmental Protection Agency order that the village abandon the water tank because of violations due to age that were found in 2017. “The staff is constantly dealing with breaks, valve malfunctions and antiquated water hydrants. Limited manpower means the village relies on Plymouth and Shelby to assist in repairs.” Reed said. “The village has limited resources to devote to the future long term capital improvement projects and the village already is paying on six OWDA (Ohio Water Development Authority) water and sewer loans.” Reed said repairing the lines will make operations more efficient while new meters could save at least some customers money compared to the current flat water rate of $75.23 per month. He pointed out Shiloh water customers are paying over the affordability index for water and sewer at 5.12% of their income. Richland County Regional Planning director Jotika Shetty told the board that, in addition to the request for county ARPA funds, the village has applied for a $480,000 Community Development Block Grant critical infrastructure grant and a $500,000 grant from the Ohio Public Works Commission. The rest of the cost would be covered by a loan from the EPA, part of which she said can be forgiven if it is not used. Commissioner Darrell Banks questioned whether officials could lower the cost “a bit” by using standard instead of remote meters. Village administrator Bryan Verburg admitted, “We could potentially keep doing what we’re doing and read them because we have to read our electric meters, too.” Commissioners’ chairman Tony Vero noted that the Shiloh water problems have been very apparent for a “very, very long time” and asked what the village has done previously to remedy the water problems. Shetty said the village has been working for the past three years on getting funding for the water project and was required by the EPA to make $4.5 million in upgrades to its wastewater system. “It’s just been an ongoing situation with water and wastewater, trying to fix what is a high priority for the EPA and dealing with those immediately,” she said. “Water lines, just due to their age, you try to put on a bandage and patchwork things as best as you can and put the other fires out as you go along.” “I’m concerned, looking at how the can’s been kicked for so many years, that‘s why I’ve become involved in local politics,” added Shiloh councilwoman April Fletcher. Looking at the future, she admitted that the village possibly needs to pass an income tax or a property tax to pay for improvements rather than just raise rates in order to move forward. Vero said if commissioners approve the full $500,000, the county will be about $279,000 over allocated ARPA funds based on some of the other outstanding requests that have not yet been acted on. He pointed out that the board has a “placeholder” for the North End Community Improvement Collaborative (NECIC), which is coming in with what he said is a “very substantial” request. Earlier this year, NECIC officials asked the board for help with funding a new community center on Mansfield‘s north side. Officials say they will need a decision by the end of the year to finalize project funding if all the grants are approved. Recorder seeks money for website improvements Commissioners also heard a request from county Recorder Sarah Davis for $94,640 in ARPA funds to pay for an upgrade to her office’s online, cloud-based document search program. The request includes $26,670 for the upgrade and $17,000 per year for four years for the service. David Weaver of GovOS, an Austin, Texas, software company that provides the service, told the board the upgrade will allow for not only the current search by index, but also a “flood” search by names on the document and location and a text search using optical character recognition. The system also will be able to provide certified copies to meet any legal needs. Company representative Austin Logie did a remote demonstration from his office in Los Angeles using the online site in the Bexar County/Houston, Texas, area. Commissioners asked Davis and Weaver to work with business manager Andrew Keller to make sure the request meets ARPA regulations before they will approve the allocation and a contract.

What To Stop Doing On Your Trip To Hawaii According To Locals USA TODAY
What To Stop Doing On Your Trip To Hawaii According To Locals USA TODAY
What To Stop Doing On Your Trip To Hawaii, According To Locals – USA TODAY https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/what-to-stop-doing-on-your-trip-to-hawaii-according-to-locals-usa-today/ In pre-pandemic days, over 10 million people would arrive annually to enjoy the Hawaiian Islands. That’s quite a bit of people, considering that the state’s population is about 1.4 million. The impact of the high number of tourists hasn’t gone unnoticed. “Over a century, Hawaii has welcomed many visitors by embracing them with warmth and aloha,” Diana Su, the senior marketing manager of Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa who was raised in Honolulu, said. “However, over decades, the amount of visitors have increased and started depleting the state of its natural resources, damaging the delicate environment, and affecting traditional practices and rituals.”  About two-thirds of Hawaii residents think their “island is being run for tourists at the expense of local people,” a number that has held steady for about five years, according to a 2022 state-sponsored survey asking residents about their sentiment toward tourism. They point out overcrowding, damage to the environment, higher costs and more traffic. BOOK A SPOT: To manage over tourism, are reservation systems the future of traveling to Hawaii? JUST DON’T: Stop throwing coins into hot steam vents, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park asks of ‘disrespectful’ people At the same time, tourism is a pillar of Hawaii’s economy – in fact, it represents a quarter of it, thanks to the jobs it creates in the hospitality industry and visitor spending. It can be a tricky balancing act for people who want to visit Hawaii while minimizing any negative impact on the islands because for so long, people have treated it as their paradisiacal playground. The best people to turn to for advice on this are undeniably the ones who live in Hawaii: locals. Read below to read Hawaii locals wish tourists would stop doing while visiting the islands: 1. Don’t be clueless Su urges people to know their stuff before departing on their trip, so take some time and learn more about Hawaii.  “Avoid coming to Hawaii without doing some research first,” she said. It’s important to know how to “avoid disrespecting sacred sites and respect boundaries and kapu (off-limit) areas.” Take the time to learn about the companies you’re hiring for excursions or tours to make sure they support the community and environment. Making educated choices on where to spend your money and what is considered respectful or disrespectful will make your trip to Hawaii that much better. DON’T BE THAT TOURIST: Here’s how to respectfully visit Hawaii, have an authentic trip 2. Don’t take anything, ever Many visitors to Hawaii take sand, coral or lava rocks from its national parks as memorabilia of their trip to Hawaii. According to Jin Prugsawan Harlow, chief of interpretation, education and volunteers as well as public information officer for Haleakala National Park, taking items from national parks is not only illegal, it’s also culturally inappropriate.  Hawaiians view Haleakala as their ancestor, Harlow said, so taking something from the park is considered highly disrespectful. “People come to Hawaii and (other national parks) because they’re wild, scenic and beautiful,” Harlow said. “And people can play a great role in making sure it stays that way.” THINK TWICE: Stop throwing coins into hot steam vents, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park asks of ‘disrespectful’ people 3. Don’t go during peak hours Traffic in Hawaii is a sore spot, with Honolulu often ranking as one of the most congested cities in the country. With so many tourists out and about on the islands, Harlow suggests to try going to popular attractions during off-hours. “At Haleakala, things can get crowded around the summit around sunset but from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the park is really empty,” she said. “Going to the Kipahulu District, arriving earlier in the day helps you beat crowded parking lots.” 4. Don’t disturb wildlife Hawaii is blessed with many beautiful creatures, some of which are impossible to spot anywhere else in the world, like the Hawaiian monk seal. While spotting these creatures out in the wild is always a treat, keep your distance and make sure to never disturb them or their natural habitat (as in, don’t touch reefs or flip over rocks). In certain cases, it’s illegal to get too close to animals like turtles and nursing seals. Seriously, it’s not worth it. SHARK ATTACK: Tourist taken to hospital after ‘serious bite’ from shark on Maui’s north shore 5. Don’t be reckless outdoors  Hawaii has otherworldly valleys, peaks, shorelines and waterfalls to explore, and as stunning as the experience may be, it can also be dangerous if you’re not careful. A lack of preparation, bad weather conditions and going to unsafe areas that are trending online can often put people at risk. For example, on Kauai, the Kauai Fire Department locked the gate accessing Queen’s Bath, a large tidal pool that can be hazardous, especially when the surf is rough. Still, people sneak in and often end up needing to be rescued. Do your research about hikes or beaches and heed to warning signs – they’re there for a reason.  “One of our most important values, for example, is to respect the land and ocean that provides for us, and we ask that visitors share in this ethos to keep our home beautiful,” Wendy Tuivaioge, Director of Hawaiian Programs at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, said. “Be mindful of your surroundings, do not venture out alone, and stay on well-marked trails.” DO THIS, NOT THAT: You won’t regret these 8 activities when you visit the islands, according to Hawaii locals 6. Don’t use harmful sunscreen Hawaii’s ecosystems are unique and fragile, including its coral reefs, and some sunscreens may play a role in harming the islands’ marine life. In 2018, Hawaii Gov. David Ige passed a law that went into effect in 2021 – making Hawaii the first state – that banned sunscreens containing chemicals believed to damage coral and marine life, oxybenzone and octinoxate. When slathering up with SPF, do your part to protect the ocean by picking reef-safe brands. Some brands that are reef-safe include Raw Elements or Kokua Sun Care, which is made right in the islands. 7. Don’t geotag  It may be tempting to do it for the ‘gram and share your vacation pictures online, but that post may have consequences long after you hit upload.  The rise in social media geotagging and sharing of once hidden spots has caused many across the country to blow up and become overcrowded and overrun, much to the dismay of locals who have been enjoying these more secret places for a long time. If you find yourself at this crossroads, consider the impact of your post. CROWDED SPOTS: Was your favorite hidden vacation spot overexposed? Blame social media and pent-up demand 8. Don’t forget you’re visiting someone’s home At the end of the day, many locals have one reminder: “It’s important for travelers to understand they are visiting someone’s home and draw on the sensibilities that come with that,” Ha’aheo Zablan, general manager of Kaimana Beach Hotel who is also Native Hawaiian, said. “We have amazing visitor-centric opportunities to take in all Hawaii has to offer without venturing into local neighborhoods or exploring too far from resort zones.” For example, people who seek out hikes with trailheads in quiet neighborhoods have been called out for disturbing residents with noise or crowded parking.  Prejean echoes the sentiment: “While Hawaii is a welcoming destination, we do ask that tourists be aware of their surroundings, reduce your ‘footprint’ by leaving the places you visit better than you found it, and to treat the local neighborhoods and people with respect and kindness.”

International Day For Older Persons: Tips To Maintain Your Well-Being In Old Age – Hindustan Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/international-day-for-older-persons-tips-to-maintain-your-well-being-in-old-age-hindustan-times/ International Day for Older Persons: Requirements for mental wellness alter as we become older. A new stage of life with its own special struggles and challenges is brought in by ageing. This frequently causes older persons to feel burdened, anxious, and occasionally helpless. The world is undergoing a major demographic transition with the population of the elderly rising rapidly. Already, people over 60 years of age exceed children under 5, and by 2050 they will outnumber children under 15. Even as fertility rates dip across the world, life expectancy has increased by more than 6 years between 2000 and 2019, according to the United Nations. This transition has been accompanied by an increase in the number of mental health issues among the elderly. Approximately 15 per cent of all adults aged 60 and above globally suffer from a mental disorder, finds the UN. (Also read: Healthy ageing tips: Here’s how an Indian balanced diet can work wonders for you ) Talking to HT Lifestyle, Prakriti Poddar, Mental Health Expert and Global Head, Mental Health and Wellbeing, RoundGlass, says, “There are several reasons and socio-economic factors that are causing the mental unrest in elders such as the rising number of nuclear families and migration of the younger generation due to urbanization are resulting in social isolation of the older generation. In addition, age-related aspects such as coping with a string of losses of physical and mental capabilities, of loved ones, of relevance and importance in one’s community – and declining capacities to accept and adapt are leaving the seniors struggling with mental health and wellbeing issues. Practicing wholistic wellbeing can empower and enable older adults to preserve their mental acuity and live with greater joy. “ She further recommends some healthy habits to help the elderly enhance their mental wellbeing and spend their twilight years with grace and dignity: 1. Nurture Social Connections: Our physical, sensory, and cognitive functions may decline with advancing age, but social functioning remains malleable and responsive to intervention throughout life. So, nurture your social connections as they have been linked to lower levels of anxiety and depression, and greater empathy. So, pick up the phone and call up your friends/family, and make plans for the weekend. 2. Move: The ‘Healthy body, healthy mind’ adage is true for all age groups. Being physically active can help boost your self-esteem and confidence and give you an opportunity to meet people. For those who can, doing regular exercise or yoga will also help you to sleep better, reduce the risk of falls by improving balance and strength, and improve cardiovascular health. 3. Meditate: Practicing meditation and mindfulness has benefits for all ages. It has been shown to alleviate stress, reduce anxiety, improve our relationships and improve sleep – all highly relevant outcomes for seniors. Meditation has also been shown to delay cognitive decline in older adults. So, get that mat and dedicate some time daily to expanding your inner awareness. 4. Find a purpose: Retirement is not the end, but the beginning of your later life. It is a transition phase that can be used meaningfully to share your experience and skills with the younger generation or with those who are less privileged. Doing volunteer/community service or paid part-time/consultancy work can add a much-needed purpose (and financial heft!) to your life post-60. Keep your senses and the mind is engaged by learning new skills, reading and solving puzzles. 3. Plan for end of life: Financial wellbeing post-retirement, health insurance, wills etc. can become a source of stress and anxiety in old age but they need not. Using technological tools such as wellbeing apps can help you plan better for your twilight years without impacting your mental health. 5. Eat healthy: Eating a nourishing diet is essential for physical and mental wellbeing, and for keeping your energy levels up throughout the day. Stay well hydrated, consume alcohol in moderation and include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your meals. In addition, expressing gratitude, being mindful, living in the present, and finding joy in every moment can help you enjoy this final phase of life as much as you cherish your youth. Keep working towards your wellbeing and thrive. Follow more stories on Facebook & Twitter
