What Is The Volumetrics Diet? Health Essentials
What Is The Volumetrics Diet? – Health Essentials https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/what-is-the-volumetrics-diet-health-essentials/ Nutrition scientist Barbara Rolls, PhD, created the Volumetrics Diet in 2000 based on years of research. The resulting books — four of them, not including updates and translations — have sold hundreds of thousands of copies. Cleveland Clinic is a non-profit academic medical center. Advertising on our site helps support our mission. We do not endorse non-Cleveland Clinic products or services. Policy Most diet trends end up in the dustbin of history within a few years, but Volumetrics seems to be standing the test of time. It’s also gained the respect of many healthcare professionals.  So, what exactly is the Volumetrics diet? The Volumetrics diet The basic principle of Volumetrics is that volume matters. The plan establishes a loose ratio: No food is off limits, but you want to eat much larger quantities of certain kinds of foods than others. By filling up on low-calorie, healthy foods, you don’t feel as hungry as you may on other diets. Dietitian Julia Zumpano, RD, LD, describes Volumetrics as “a very filling diet, mainly plant-based, that encourages you to eat very nutrient-dense, non-starchy vegetables that pack a lot of nutritional benefit.” The four categories The Volumetrics diet breaks food down into four categories. To determine which category a food belongs in, you divide the number of calories per serving by its weight in grams. The result is a number between zero and nine. If you’re attempting to lose weight on the Volumetrics diet, you’re encouraged to eat 1,400 calories a day. The majority of what you eat in a day should be coming from categories one and two, but occasional, small indulges from categories three and four are acceptable. Category one (calorie density under 0.6): This category of food forms the foundation of your diet. In other words, this is the stuff you fill up on. These foods — due to their high water content — should help you feel full. A few examples of category one foods are: Fruits like bananas, apples and grapefruit. Non-starchy vegetables like broccoli, carrots, beets and Brussels sprouts. Nonfat dairy products like nonfat yogurt or skim milk. (If you aren’t a dairy drinker, never fear: Most unsweetened milk substitutes also fall into this category.) Broth-based soups of all sorts. Category two (calorie density 0.7 to 1.5): This category contains foods that are healthy when consumed in moderation. A few examples of category two foods are: Skinless chicken and turkey and lean cuts of pork or beef. Legumes: lentils, chickpeas and dried beans. Starchy vegetables: corn, potatoes and squash. Whole grains: brown rice, quinoa and farro. Category three (calorie density 1.6 to 3.9): This category contains food that, while still fairly healthy, should only be consumed in small portions. A few examples of category three foods are: Fatty meat and fish, as well as skin-on poultry. Full-fat dairy products such as ice cream, cheese and whole milk. Refined carbohydrates like pasta, white bread and white rice. Category four (calorie density 4 to 9): This category includes processed, sugary and fatty foods, which should be eaten very sparingly. A few examples of category four foods are: Nuts and seeds. Oils, butter and shortening. Fast food, candy and chips.   In addition to the dietary measures, the Volumetrics diet recommends getting 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day. Pros and cons of the Volumetrics diet When it comes to weight loss and nutrition, one size doesn’t fit all. Zumpano explains that choosing the diet that’s right for you is a personal process. “It’s affected by the foods you enjoy, and know that you can’t give up, food availability, and how motivated you are to make changes to your eating habits and food choices,” she says. Here are some commonly stated benefits and drawbacks of the Volumetrics diet: Pros Promotes long-term healthy eating. The Volumetrics diet is designed to be sustainable and healthy in the long term. It’s sort of a “come for the weight loss, stay for the health benefits” kind of situation. Weight loss is long-term. Short-term diets often cause your weight to yo-yo back and forth. Because the Volumetrics diet is intended to be a permanent lifestyle change, those who follow the plan may lose weight a bit slower, but have a good shot at keeping it off. No foods are “off-limits.” Go ahead and have a small slice of birthday cake. If you’re craving pretzels, have some. While you have to limit the quantity of category four foods you’re eating, nothing is prohibited. Accessible to everybody. Are you vegan? Do you keep kosher? Have you been diagnosed with celiac disease? That’s OK Because there aren’t any hard and fast restrictions in the Volumetrics diet, you can eat — or not eat — according to your needs. It’s safe! Volumetrics isn’t a fad diet. It doesn’t ask you to maintain a dangerously high-calorie deficit, eliminate entire categories of food from your diet or cultivate a negative relationship with food. You don’t have to cook separate meals for yourself and your children because you aren’t consuming “diet food.” You’re just living a healthy lifestyle. There are lots of resources at your disposal. Besides the four books the diet’s creator already penned, there’s a lot of scientific research supporting the plan, and plenty of websites devoted to recipes. Cons While most doctors and dieticians agree that it’s a solid approach, the Volumetrics diet isn’t perfect. Here are some of the downsides to the program: It limits the consumption of healthy fats. Millennials beware: Volumetrics is coming for your avocado toast! The Volumetrics diet doesn’t distinguish between healthy and unhealthy fats like some other eating plans do. As a result, nuts and seeds occupy the same category (four) as candy and fast food. It may be too calorie-focused. Energy-density calculation is the basis of the Volumetrics diet, which means calorie counting is foundational to the plan. Over time, we’ve learned that calorie counting isn’t foolproof. It can often treat foods that have the same amount of calories — such as 1 ounce of nuts and 1 ounce of chips — as nutritional equivalents. We now know all calories aren’t created equally. As Zumpano puts it, “Even if weight loss is your goal, caloric restriction is not the only way to get towards weight loss.” The good news is, there are ways to deemphasize caloric intake. More on that later. It’s a big time commitment. The Volumetrics diet isn’t microwave-meal friendly. The emphasis on fresh fruit and vegetables over processed foods makes the diet a healthy choice. But it also makes the plan hard to follow without regular trips to the grocery store and a lot of home cooking. If you decide to go full-bore on the food journaling and energy-density calculation, that will also take some time. It can get boring. All that soup is eventually going to get a little dull. If your meals are starting to feel a bit predictable you can spice things up — literally — by adding new recipes into your rotation. Eating out is difficult. While many chain restaurants can make nutrition information available to you on request, the chef isn’t likely to hand over the recipe. Without that information, categorizing and documenting what you eat outside of your home is going to be challenging.  Making Volumetrics work for you As with any diet, the key to success on the Volumetrics diet is following the plan in good faith and adjusting it where necessary to fit your lifestyle. What do we mean by good faith? Zumpano puts it best, explaining, “We are in a hacking world, and it’s OK to hack your diet once in a while. But if you do it on a regular basis, you’re not going to reap the benefits as intended.” Think about it as embracing the spirit of the diet, not the letter of it. Yes, nuts and fast food are in the same category, but we all know that a handful of almonds is a better choice than a handful of pretzels. Unlike plans that integrate a peer-support system of some kind, you’re only accountable to yourself on the Volumetrics diet. While the freedom that comes with the Volumetrics diet may tempt some people to try and game the system, it also makes it adaptable to your needs. That, in turn, makes it sustainable. How do you adjust the Volumetrics diet to fit your goals and lifestyle? Here are a few examples: Let’s say you’re trying to get healthy, but don’t actually need to lose weight. You could adjust the number of calories you’re taking in each day, while maintaining the ratios prescribed in the diet. You could also ignore calories altogether and focus exclusively on nutrition. Let’s say you do want to lose weight, but calorie counting puts you in a less-than-healthy head space. Don’t do it! Try recording the number of foods you eat from each of the four categories instead, or make a healthy-eating checklist for yourself. Let’s say you can’t exercise for 30 minutes a day. Then do what you can! Five minutes of stretching or taking the stairs instead of the elevator is 100% better than doing nothing. Set realistic and attainable goals that fit your current health and fitness level. Once you crush it, you can set your sights higher. Is the Volumetrics diet right for you? Like all diet plans, your mileage may vary when it comes to Volumetrics. If you’re trying to decide whether or not to adopt this approach to eating, the following questions may prove helpful: Are you looking for a quick fix or a lifestyle change? The Volumetrics plan is about long-term healthy eating, not short-term weight loss. If you just need to drop a couple of extra pounds, this probably isn’t the best choice. Are you a decent cook? Do you consider assembling a salad cooking? Does the fire alarm serve as the soundtrack for your culinary adventures? Or is a food delivery service your most-used app?  If your answ...

Google Forged Deal With Coinbase To Pay For Services With Crypto Like Bitcoin Ethereum And Maybe Uniglo.io Cryptonews
Google Forged Deal With Coinbase To Pay For Services With Crypto Like Bitcoin, Ethereum, And Maybe Uniglo.io – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/google-forged-deal-with-coinbase-to-pay-for-services-with-crypto-like-bitcoin-ethereum-and-maybe-uniglo-io-cryptonews/ Recent news shows increased potential for the crypto world, as Google has agreed on a deal with exchange Coinbase to enable users to increase digital finance payment options. Some tech firms have been slow to include crypto payments into their functionality, but with industry-giant Google accepting crypto payments for services, the future certainly looks bright. This not only shows excellent potential for the likes of Coinbase and the coins listed on it but also shows increased acceptance of crypto as a truly global currency. Many other projects could flourish, even newcomers like Uniglo. GLO is one project that’s been gaining more and more mainstream attention recently, and it could soon rival the likes of BTC and ETH. Here’s why: Uniglo (GLO) Uniglo brings the strongest set of deflationary measures in crypto thanks to its innovative GLO vault and ultra-burn mechanics. This comes at a time when investors search for answers to the world’s growing inflationary concerns and gives them a strong asset-backed store of value they can have complete faith in. It’s also a store of value that’s wholly diversified and protected against market volatility, giving it key upsides compared to many other investments. With the incredible dual-burn technology, more tokens are burned over time to ensure GLO becomes even more scarce. That’s why now could be the perfect time to buy. Bitcoin (BTC) Prospects for the most significant player in crypto look set to improve now that it can be used for purchases of services with Google. While BTC has struggled somewhat recently, there will always be a place for it in crypto. And there should arguably always be a place for it in your portfolio, especially if it can fire back up to all-time highs, as many experts think it can. Ethereum (ETH) Ethereum managed to rebound in price somewhat after losses this year, thanks to news of the merger to ETH 2.0. While they have stagnated slightly since then, ETH can now put issues associated with slow speeds and high fees behind it and could be primed for strong future growth. Conclusion With ETH and BTC becoming more usable for actual purchases, new confidence is beginning to enter the market. One crypto that could continue to flourish off this confidence is GLO which has some of the most robust credentials the space has ever seen. Ambassador Mark Brzezinskis Remarks At Kosciuszko Foundation (As Prepared For Delivery) US Embassy And Consulate In Poland
Ambassador Mark Brzezinski’s Remarks At Kosciuszko Foundation (As Prepared For Delivery) – US Embassy And Consulate In Poland https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/ambassador-mark-brzezinskis-remarks-at-kosciuszko-foundation-as-prepared-for-delivery-us-embassy-and-consulate-in-poland/ Kosciuszko Foundation October 13, 2022 Palace on the Water Marek, thank you for the kind introduction. What an honor to be here this morning as you begin this day of critically important dialogue. A very special welcome to the Kosciuszko Foundation Board members joining us from the United States. “Za naszą i waszą wolność” or “For Your Freedom and Ours.” Those words are forever tied to Tadeusz Kosciuszko, the Polish-American hero for whom this organization is named. Two centuries later, you are living up to the words of this patriot who stood up for liberty and freedom. He would be so proud. Poland, the United States, our allies and partners, the Kosciuszko Foundation, private companies, freedom fighters around the globe – we all have combined forces to stop Putin in his tracks by providing support to the Ukrainian people. Now midway through the 8th month of Russia’s brutal further invasion of Ukraine, we must not give up our lifeline of assistance. What we are doing is working. That support is saving lives and lifting spirits. The leadership the Kosciuszko Foundation has demonstrated since the very start of the war has been nothing short of remarkable. It is truly an inspiration. You took action that was both strategic and timely, decisive and collective. You immediately shifted resources to Stand with Ukraine. Over $1.5 million has been raised for the Help Ukraine Fund, money that goes directly to the millions of refugees, mainly women and children, who fled the war for safety in Poland. Some of that money was also used to host a camp for sixty children from Yavoriv, Ukraine, this summer. Those kids have been through so much and have witnessed horrors no child ever should – they’ve seen schools and neighborhoods destroyed; families have been separated, they’re scared and anxious. They came to Cieszanow, Poland, to find an escape through education, through fun, and for the simple joy of being a kid, free from fear. They took part in an English language immersion program alongside Polish children. Ukrainian teachers and American educators led the instruction. It was a meshing of cultures. After two weeks everyone returned home and brought those experiences with them. It is something they will never forget. These educational and cultural exchanges evoke such a powerful level of understanding for both young and old. It can provide an openness and tolerance that changes perspectives. The Kosciuszko Foundation understands this so well. You have been empowering young people for decades giving academics a chance to study and learn in a foreign country. The academic exchanges between Poland and the United States are the cornerstone of what you are all about. I can speak from experience of the value of this eye-opening approach. In the early 1990s, I was a Kosciuszko grantee. As a 20-year-old living in the United States, I watched from thousands of miles away as the Berlin Wall fell and the divide between East and West crumbled. This symbolized a new beginning in Central Europe. I knew I had to be here, and I was drawn to my father’s homeland in Poland. I did some research and found the Kosciuszko Foundation. I applied for a grant, and you gave me an incredible opportunity. I spent the summer in Krakow learning about Polish history. I discovered a deeper understanding of what it meant to be a Polish-American, to have the name Brzezinski. That summer charted the course for the rest of my life. A year later I became a Fulbright scholar, and I would go on to write a book about Polish constitutionalism. Though I did not know it at the time, those couple of years three decades ago were incredibly informative in preparing me to become the U.S. Ambassador to Poland. Kosciuszko Foundation, from the bottom of my heart, I thank you. And just as I was inspired here 30 years ago, this year the Polish people have risen to the moment, setting an example for the rest of the world with unparalleled generosity and overwhelming response to the crisis next door. This is a very important point so I want to convey it in Polish language: · Polska ma wiele mocnych stron. · np. silną gospodarkę. · np. potencjał innowacyjności. · Teraz zobaczyliśmy jeszcze: zdolność do szybkiej reakcji całego społeczeństwa i mobilizacji. · To znaczy: czasami kryzys może opóźnić reakcję. · Ale nie w Polsce. Tutaj w lutym mogliśmy zobaczyć zdolność do szybkiej mobilizacji całego społeczeństwa. · Ameryka miała podobne doświadczenia: · Atak na Pearl Harbor zmobilizował Amerykanów do szybkiego działania w przemyśle wojskowym. · Drugi przykład, to: lot na Księżyc w 1969 r. spowodował ogromny rozwój technologiczny. · Kryzys na Ukrainie spowodował ogromną mobilizację w Polsce. · To daje nadzieję na głębokie zmiany. I am awed. I am amazed. And I am tremendously proud. Young people have played an important role here. They are hosting fundraisers on social media, organizing clothing drives; they’ve volunteered their time and money to help the Ukrainian people. This next generation of leaders are finding their purpose. They are learning what the words “For Your Freedom and Ours” truly means. A young woman from Rzeszów who in 2022 organized a clothing drive for Ukrainians and could apply for a Kosciuszko Foundation fellowship in 2023, could go on to become the President of Poland in 20 or 30 years. Marzena, an engineer from Poland whom I hosted at my residence in May, is now at Penn State University on a Kosciuszko Foundation Fellowship. Her research on water and wastewater systems may propel her into leadership roles as we work to protect and ensure safe access to one of the world’s most critical resources. Today we will hear about the consequences of the war but there are many unintended consequences that Putin didn’t count on. Ukraine’s resolve, the united effort of the free world, and the power that young people have to change it. This is a moment of political awakening, and the Kosciuszko Foundation is investing in the next generation. Thank you again for everything you’ve done for me and the next generation of leaders. Eyes In The Sky: EPD Aiming High With Drone Technology – Enid News & Eagle https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/eyes-in-the-sky-epd-aiming-high-with-drone-technology-enid-news-eagle/ ENID, Okla. — It’s not a bird, and it’s not a plane, either. Local residents looking to the skies may catch glimpses of drones being used by Enid Police Department. Early Wednesday morning, Capt. Gary Fuxa, Sgts. James McFadden and Tyler Evans and Officer David Sneed spent several hours training with their personal drones and the departmental drone. Drones are increasingly being used by law enforcement agencies across the nation, and Fuxa said the devices are tools that allow police to do a better job at serving the community. “The drones are really a truly valuable asset to our community,” Fuxa said. “Overall, I think they’re going to make us all a lot safer.” Enid Police Department’s Sgt. James McFadden, Officer David Sneed and Sgt. Tyler Evans (from left) fly drones at Crosslin Park on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2022. Those features can all help EPD with a variety of things, he said, such as locating missing people and suspects, mapping crime scenes and traffic accidents and giving officers a bird’s eye look at scenes before they go in from the ground. “Looking at the officer-safety factor — if we can get an aerial view and get eyes on the situation to tell us what’s going on before … our officers can take precautions instead of rushing right in,” Fuxa said. Travel To Beautiful Places For Less Money, And Live Like A Local: Why Retirees Should Try House Swapping – Morningstar https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/travel-to-beautiful-places-for-less-money-and-live-like-a-local-why-retirees-should-try-house-swapping-morningstar/ By Randi Mazzella Is home swapping right for you? Here’s how it works, and why it makes travel so much more affordable. This article is reprinted by permission from NextAvenue.org. Barbara Costello, 72, spent a month this summer on vacation in the South of France. The trip was incredible, especially because she got to go with her husband and several of her adult children and young grandchildren. “It was something I never thought we would be able to afford to do all together,” says Costello. The Costello family kept the trip’s cost down by participating in a house swap. “My daughter Liz owns a home in the Hamptons [beach towns in New York],” explains Costello, the TikTok sensation behind Brunch with Babs. “She decided to rent it out over the summer and listed the home on a rental site. She was contacted directly by a family that lived in the South of France. They asked if she would be interested in doing a home swap instead of renting.” House swapping had never occurred to them before. “We had rented homes in Florida through sites such as VRBO,” Costello says. “But after the host sent us photos of their big, beautiful home in France, we decided to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” While the idea of home swapping is not new, it has gained in popularity in recent years. The home swapping company Home Exchange reports that requests for exchanges in 2021 were up by 31% compared with 2020 and 39% compared with 2019. Older adults are a big part of this trend, Jessica Poillucci, public relations representative for Home Exchange, says. “Between 2019 and 2022, the number of users of our service that are at least 50 years old has increased by 47%,” she says. “These users are also more active, doing 13% more exchanges as guests and 4% more exchanges as hosts in 2022 compared with 2019.” Don’t miss: MarketWatch asks public-health experts, ‘Would you take a cruise?’ And, ‘Is the COVID-19 pandemic over?’ House swapping in retirement The primary benefit of a home swap over traditional vacation lodgings like staying at a hotel or a home rental is the cost. House swapping allows people to enjoy homes worldwide without having to pay for accommodation, making the overall cost of travel much more affordable. “If we had gotten hotel rooms for everyone or rented a house big enough for the 15 of us, it would have been much more expensive than doing the house swap,” Costello explains. Beverly Berryman, 66, lives in Minnesota and traveled all over the world through home swapping. “My husband and I have always liked to travel, and through his job, we were able to travel quite a bit,” Berryman says. “But when he left his job, travel became so expensive. I read an article about home exchange as a way to lower your expenses and we decided to try it.” Berryman and her husband began home swapping in 2008 and have not stopped. They did four swaps in 2012 alone, including Iceland, Hawaii, Santa Fe and Washington, D.C. New costs to consider Not having to pay for lodging means more money for vacation extras. “Since the home was in a residential area, we had to rent cars,” explains Costello. “But we still saved enough money to splurge on excursions like renting a boat for a day. I got to swim in the Mediterranean with my grandkids, which was incredible.” Another benefit of house swapping is that you get to experience a place less like a tourist and more like a local. “We spent much time in the home, cooking meals and swimming in the pool,” Costello says. “We shopped at the local market and interacted with people who lived and worked in the area. It was so great to have this type of everyday exposure and immerse ourselves in the culture of this foreign country.” Berryman heartily concurs. “If you stay at the hotel, you go to places that the concierge recommends,” she says. “But with home swaps, you can find hidden gems and enjoy places the locals frequent.” Read: ‘We want to live in Mexico’: Should we sell our property in the U.S. before prices drop, and purchase our dream home overseas? Finding a home swap Most swaps are done through companies such as Home Exchange, LoveHomeSwap, or HomeLink, which usually charge annual subscriptions ranging from $105 to $180. Home Exchange also requires swappers to put up $500 deposits that the company can use to settle small claims of damage or theft. Home Exchange also promises, for no added fee, to reimburse swappers for as much as $1 million in property damage if it meets the firm’s terms of use. None of these three businesses require cleaning deposits or charge cleaning fees. Despite the terminology, travelers do not always have to vacation at the same time in the same home as people on the other side of the home swap. “We offer two options to members,” says Emmanuel Arnaud, CEO of Home Exchange. “One is a classic traditional home exchange that is reciprocal, and the two families exchange homes simultaneously. Our second option is a guest points system. The points system allows members to earn points if they allow someone to stay in their home, but they don’t want a reciprocal exchange. These points can be redeemed for another member’s home or another date.” Also see:’Let the kids be kids and you be a kid along with them.’ Why you should take a trip with just your grandchildren Swaps let you work really remotely There are also Facebook (META) groups for people looking for home swaps without having to pay an intermediary. Home swaps are available within the U.S. as well as all over the world. “COVID changed travel a lot,” Arnaud says. “People were less inclined to travel internationally. But they also had more opportunity to participate in home swaps since many began working remotely.” This is especially true for people 50 and older, a group he says has been “surprisingly active.” “Home swapping has become a lifestyle,” Arnaud says. “Our annual membership allows people to make as many swaps as they want in a year. Older adults have been taking advantage of their flexibility whether they are retired or now work from home.” Berryman and her husband were able to stay in a home in Northern Ireland for five weeks this year. “A longer stay meant we didn’t have to be on the go all the time,” she says. “We got to live our lives in another place and discover more of the area.” Is house swapping right for you? Here are some things to know when considering house swapping: An added bonus of house swapping is the opportunity to make friends in other places. “We have made lifelong friendships with people worldwide through home exchange,” Berryman says. “In 2014 we home-swapped with a family in South Africa and have kept in touch, sending holiday cards every year and (connecting) on Facebook. We’re talking about returning to South Africa, this time staying with them as guests in their home.” Randi Mazzella is a freelance writer specializing in a wide range of topics from parenting to pop culture to life after 50. NATO Holds Nuclear Talks Amid War Tensions, Putin Threats – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nato-holds-nuclear-talks-amid-war-tensions-putin-threats-69news-wfmz-tv/ BRUSSELS (AP) — NATO’s secretive Nuclear Planning Group met Thursday as the military alliance presses ahead with plans to hold a nuclear exercise next week as concerns deepen over President Vladimir Putin’s insistence that he will use any means necessary to defend Russian territory. Defense ministers led the session, which usually happens once or twice a year, at NATO headquarters in Brussels. It comes against a backdrop of high tension as some NATO allies, led by the U.S., supply Ukraine with advanced weapons and munitions to defend itself against Russian aerial attacks. NATO is keeping a wary eye on Russia’s movements, but has so far seen no change in its nuclear posture. But additional uncertainty comes from the fact that Russia is also due to hold its own nuclear exercises soon, possibly at the same time as NATO or just after, according to NATO diplomats. That could complicate the 30-country military organization’s reading of the war and of Moscow’s intentions. “Russia will also be conducting its annual exercise, I think, the week after or just after the annual exercise,” U.K. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told reporters. But “what we don’t want is to do things out of routine.” “This is a routine exercise and it’s all about readiness,” Wallace said, just as “NATO’s meeting is all about making sure we are ready for anything. I mean, that is the job of this alliance — to make sure that the 30 partners together are ready for what is thrown at us. And we have to continue to work at that.” NATO’s exercise, dubbed “Steadfast Noon,” is held around the same time every year and runs for about one week. It involves fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads, but doesn’t involve any live bombs. Conventional jets, and surveillance and refueling aircraft also routinely take part. Fourteen NATO member countries will be involved in the exercise, which was planned before Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. The main part of the maneuvers will be held more than 1,000 kilometers (625 miles) from Russia. NATO as an organization doesn’t possess any weapons. The nuclear weapons nominally linked to the alliance remain under the firm control of three member countries — the U.S., the U.K. and France. But France insists on maintaining its nuclear independence and doesn’t take part in Nuclear Planning Group meetings. Earlier this week, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned that it “would be absolutely the wrong signal to send” if the world’s biggest security organization were to cancel the maneuvers. “NATO’s firm, predictable behavior, our military strength, is the best way to prevent escalation,” Stoltenberg said. “If we now created the grounds for any misunderstandings, miscalculations in Moscow about our willingness to protect and defend all allies, we would increase the risk of escalation.” With the Russian army retreating under the blows of Ukrainian forces armed with Western weapons, Putin raised the stakes by annexing four Ukrainian regions and declaring a partial mobilization of up to 300,000 reservists to buttress the crumbling front line. As his war plans have gone awry, Putin has repeatedly signaled that he could resort to nuclear weapons to protect the Russian gains. The threat is also aimed at deterring NATO nations from sending more sophisticated weapons to Ukraine. Stoltenberg described Putin’s spiraling nuclear rhetoric as “dangerous and reckless,” and underlined that the allies “have also conveyed clearly to Russia that it will have severe consequences if they use nuclear weapons in any way.” Follow the AP’s coverage of the war at https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. The Global Diabetes Crisis Few Are Talking About STAT
The Global Diabetes Crisis Few Are Talking About STAT
The Global Diabetes Crisis Few Are Talking About – STAT https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/the-global-diabetes-crisis-few-are-talking-about-stat/ In the numbers game of disease statistics, type 1 diabetes takes a back seat to type 2 diabetes, which accounts for more than 95% of diabetes cases around the globe. But the impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D), which tends to emerge earlier in life and can quickly kill an individual if it goes unrecognized or untreated, is huge. Its global burden, however, hasn’t been well understood — until now. With the proper care and treatment, including access to insulin, which people with type 1 diabetes must use every day, individuals can live long and healthy lives with this disease. But many in the United States and countries around the world do not have access to even the most basic treatments. To assess the impact of type 1 diabetes, JDRF, the organization I lead, and its global partners created the Type 1 Diabetes Index (T1D Index), a first-of-its-kind tool, to identify and address the wide gaps in knowledge about the incidence and impact of type 1 diabetes country by country. With this knowledge, interventions can be developed that will save lives and improve the health of those living with the disease. advertisement The index quantifies that, without modern care, type 1 diabetes shortens lives, kills people, and is incredibly costly for the individuals living with the disease, their families, and health care systems. An individual diagnosed with the disease at age 10 loses an average of 32 healthy years of life. Based on birth cohorts from 1950 to 2040, 6.85 million lives will be lost by 2040 if people universally do not have access to interventions to diagnose and treat type 1 diabetes, and it stands to become one of the world’s largest deadly chronic health conditions, of similar scale and impact to HIV. advertisement This crisis can be forestalled, and the lives of millions of people can be improved, with relatively modest investments. It is my hope that the T1D Index offers governments and health organizations an essential starting point for prioritizing research on type 1 diabetes and interventions for it. The index can also help empower people living with T1D and their caregivers advocate for the care and support they deserve. My colleagues and I at JDRF have heard stories from around the world about dramatically disparate standards of care. This is not just an issue in the developing world, but also in wealthy countries. My brother, Stephen, and I have lived with T1D for 45 and 38 years respectively. He was diagnosed with it at age 3; I was diagnosed at age 13. Advances in treating type 1 diabetes like improved insulins, continuous glucose monitors, and automated insulin-delivery systems have transformed our lives for the better. Yet others with T1D in the U.S., as well those in wealthy and low-income countries, lack access to these improvements. According to the T1D Index, since the inception of modern medical reporting on T1D, more than 300,000 Americans would still be alive today if they had not died due to complications and challenges associated with the disease, including many who rationed insulin due to cost. This is unacceptable. Clinicians in Malawi shared with us that if children with type 1 diabetes were able to get a prompt diagnosis and basic care, their lives could be extended by decades. In Mexico and Brazil, the standard of care is years behind, leading to devastating complications such as blindness or kidney disease, and premature death. These stories are compelling, but not enough to drive policy change and new investments on their own. As is the case with many challenges, data can help drive change. The T1D Index has helped identify four key interventions that can change the current trajectory for people with T1D: enable better education and training to accurately diagnose T1D create easy access to insulin and tools to measure blood sugar ensure that everyone living with T1D has access to technology that automates blood sugar monitoring and insulin delivery invest in more research into emerging ways to prevent, treat, and cure T1D. With the global snapshot of type 1 diabetes provided by the T1D Index, advocacy organizations like JDRF, working with policymakers, nongovernmental organizations, and other decision makers around the world, can develop targeted strategies to help implement these interventions and deliver quality care to people with T1D so they can thrive no matter where they live. If something as simple as a correct diagnosis and basic care can extend lives by decades, the world is morally obliged to act. Aaron J. Kowalski is the CEO of JDRF, a global T1D research and advocacy organization. Create a display name to comment This name will appear with your comment

Here Is The Latest SEC Sports News From The Associated Press – Beckley Register-Herald https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/here-is-the-latest-sec-sports-news-from-the-associated-press-beckley-register-herald/ UNDATED (AP) — Alabama’s Will Anderson and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker and Josh Heupel are some of the Southeastern Conference’s top performers so far this season. Anderson is the unanimous pick as The Associated Press’ top SEC defensive player at the midway point. Hooker was voted as the top offensive player and Heupel was the unanimous choice as top SEC coach of the first half. The midseason awards were voted on by AP reporters covering the SEC. The third-ranked Crimson Tide and sixth-ranked Volunteers play this weekend in Knoxville. UNDATED (AP) — This weekend in college football includes a season-high six games matching teams ranked in the AP Top 25. Three of those games also match unbeaten teams. They include No. 3 Alabama at No. 6 Tennessee; No. 10 Penn State at No. 5 Michigan; and No. 8 Oklahoma State at No. 13 TCU. By Saturday night, the championship picture could be very different. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo calls it a Super Saturday. LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky coach John Calipari says on social media that consensus national player of the year Oscar Tshiebwe will have a “minor” 15-minute procedure to “clean some things up” in his knee. Calipari did not specify in a Twitter post on Tuesday which knee will be treated. The school did not have specifics on how long Tshiebwe will be out. The coach said he sat the 6-foot-9 senior forward for practices on Saturday and Monday but that Tshiebwe pushed to participate in Sunday’s pro day workout before NBA scouts in what Calipari described as “an unbelievable performance.” UNDATED (AP) — It could well be among the marquee quarterback matchups of the season: Alabama’s Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young versus Tennessee’s rising star Hendon Hooker. Young’s sprained right shoulder was being re-evaluated, but coach Nick Saban seemed somewhat optimistic about his status for the Saturday’s game. Hooker and Young are still among the leading Heisman Trophy candidates. Jalen Milroe started for Alabama in a squeaker over Texas A&M. UNDATED (AP) — Ole Miss’ Jonathan Mingo is coming off of the biggest game of his career. He broke the receiving record set by current New York Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore by getting 247 yards against Vanderbilt. It was the most yards of any FBS player in a game this season and vaulted Mingo into the Southeastern Conference lead with 507 yards entering Saturday’s game with Auburn. Mingo has battled injury in his career and been overshadowed by 1,000-yard receivers Moore and Dontario Drummond. Now, he’s among the elites for No. 9 Ole Miss. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. October Becomes Worst Month For Crypto Hacks With Two Weeks To Go – Yahoo Finance https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/october-becomes-worst-month-for-crypto-hacks-with-two-weeks-to-go-yahoo-finance/ October has become the worst-ever month for crypto-related crimes with over $718 million in overall losses, and that’s with two more weeks to go before the month ends. Data pointed out by Chainalysis on Thursday noted that the amount was stolen from several decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols across eleven different attacks. “2022 will likely surpass 2021 as the biggest year for hacking on record,” Chainalysis researchers wrote. “So far, hackers have grossed over $3 billion across 125 hacks.” “Despite the current bear market, we’re seeing a lot of activity among hackers, who are targeting various protocols,” said Jasper Lee, audit tech lead at crypto auditing firm Sooho.io. “For those protocols or Dapps [decentralized apps] which have not been thoroughly audited, they make for easy and reliable short-term profit. Poorly protected protocols are low-hanging fruit for hackers, who make easy pickings of their too-easily accessed locked,” Lee added. Attackers gained over $3.2 billion in 2021. But this year was off to an even-rocky start with a $325 million exploit of popular cross-chain service Wormhole, which was followed by a $625 million attack on Axie Infinity’s Ronin bridge, and then a $200 million exploit of the Nomad bridge. Attack vectors in the crypto sector range from exploiting bridges, a blockchain-based tool that allows users to transact between different networks, to market manipulation, where rogue traders utilize millions of dollars to move thinly-traded markets in their favor to net several multiples of the initial capital deployed. Over three bridges were breached this month alone, Chainalysis said, with an attack on a BNB Chain-based bridge over the weekend saw exploiters illicitly gaining over $100 million after the bridge was exploited for $566 million. Then on Monday, the layer 1 blockchain QANplatform was the target of a bridge hack that resulted in the theft of nearly $1 million in QANX tokens. Elsewhere, Tuesday night saw $100 million in liquidity drained from Solana’s popular Mango Markets trading protocol after a rogue trader manipulated spot token prices to borrow the entirety of the protocol’s assets against their position.

World Stocks Slip To Near 2-Yr Low Ahead Of U.S. CPI Data – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/world-stocks-slip-to-near-2-yr-low-ahead-of-u-s-cpi-data-reuters/ MSCI’s ACWI world stocks index at lowest since November 2020 European stocks down 0.7% in early trading Dollar pushing for 7th day of gains, yen near 1998 low U.S. CPI data set to drive bets on Fed rate hike UK gilt yields rise ahead of planned end of BOE support LONDON, Oct 13 (Reuters) – World stocks slipped to a near 2-year low and Japan’s yen was pinned near 1998 levels on Thursday, as investors braced for key U.S. inflation data later likely to shape the size of the Federal Reserve’s next interest rate hike. Global markets have suffered a torrid few weeks and there was little sign of respite in either Asia or Europe as weak equities knocked MSCI’s 47-country world index (.MIWD00000PUS) down for a seventh straight day. The seemingly-unstoppable dollar held its ground in the currency markets to cement the yen’s struggles, while bond traders were also watching Britain’s gilt market with the Bank of England due to end its emergency stabilisation measures on Friday. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Europe’s region-wide STOXX 600 (.STOXX) index was down 0.6%, also down for a seventh straight session. It has fallen nearly 4.3% in the last six days, with markets worried that aggressive global interest rate hikes will trigger recessions. Data had already confirmed German harmonised inflation was +10.9% y/y in September but all eyes are on U.S. CPI data due at 1230 GMT. Paul O’Connor, Head of Multi-Asset at Janus Henderson Investors, said the question investors have is whether central banks like the Fed are getting close to the end of their interest rate hikes. “Are we there yet? My feeling is that we are quite close to pricing in peak rates, but on the growth story I think there are probably a lot of downgrades still to come,” he said. Interest rate hikes take a year to 18 months to fully take effect. As a result “it is quite plausible that around the end of the year, the central banks declare a pause… labour markets will be cooling and housing markets will be falling.” Minutes of the Fed’s latest policy meeting released on Wednesday had showed many officials “emphasized the cost of taking too little action to bring down inflation likely outweighed the cost of taking too much action”. Several policymakers did stress, however, that it would be important to “calibrate” the pace of further rate hikes to reduce the risk of “significant adverse effects” on the economy. Treasury yields were edging up in Europe. The U.S. 10-year benchmark yield ticked up 2 basis points to 3.923%, although most of the equivalent European yields were down a touch. In Asia overnight, widespread weakness had seen Japan’s Nikkei (.N225) slip 0.6% and South Korea’s Kospi (.KS11) tumble 1.8% as news that Taiwanese chipmaking giant TSMC (2330.TW) had cut its investment budget by at least 10% pressured the wider region’s tech sector. read more Hong Kong’s Hang Seng (.HSI) dropped 1.9%, and mainland Chinese blue chips (.CSI300) lost 0.3% to leave MSCI’s index of Asia-Pacific shares (.MIAP00000PUS) languishing close to 2 1/2-year lows. U.S. emini stock futures offered some hope though, rising 0.1% following another drop on S&P 500 (.SPX) overnight. “I’m more concerned than I’ve been for some time,” said Tom Nash, a fixed income portfolio manager at UBS Asset Management in Sydney. “The risk of an over-tightening episode and some mishap in financial markets is higher than I can remember.” HEROIC Fed Governor Michelle Bowman took a hawkish stance in a speech on Wednesday, saying that if high inflation does not start to wane she will continue to support aggressive rate rises. Markets lay 90% odds for another 75 basis-point rate hike in November, versus 10% probability of a half-point bump. The dollar index, which gauges the greenback against six major rivals, barely budged from around 113.25 ahead of the CPI data. The U.S. currency remained close to a fresh 24-year high to the yen and last changing hands at 146.81 while sterling sagged to $1.1050 albeit it was still up from Tuesday’s a two-week trough of $1.0925. Benchmark 10-year gilt yields had swung from a fresh 14-year peak at 4.632% to sit at 4.337% in early trading. The Bank of England insisted that its emergency bond market support will expire on Friday as originally announced, countering media reports of continued aid if necessary. BoE Governor Andrew Bailey had riled markets on Tuesday by saying British pension funds and other investors hit hard by a slump in bond prices had until that deadline to fix their problems. “Obviously the markets appear a little bit rattled and I think everyone remains worried about the stability of the UK financial markets – this is extraordinary.” “I would say it’s heroic to say the risk of some sort of systemic problem has been extinguished because these are big moves and we don’t now how much deleveraging needs to be done,” Janus Henderson’s O’Connor said. “Markets still feel very dysfunctional” Meanwhile, crude oil markets remained weak following a 2% slide on Wednesday amid worries over demand. Brent crude futures dropped 7 cents, or 0.1%, to $92.38 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was down 21 cents, or 0.2%, at $87.06 a barrel. U.S. Will Begin Turning Many Venezuelan Migrants Back To Mexico 25 News KXXV And KRHD
U.S. Will Begin Turning Many Venezuelan Migrants Back To Mexico 25 News KXXV And KRHD
U.S. Will Begin Turning Many Venezuelan Migrants Back To Mexico – 25 News KXXV And KRHD https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/u-s-will-begin-turning-many-venezuelan-migrants-back-to-mexico-25-news-kxxv-and-krhd/ By: By William Melhado, The Texas Tribune The Biden administration plans to turn most Venezuelan migrants crossing the southern border back to Mexico, which was previously not allowed, the Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday. The border policy also creates a pathway to bring as many as 24,000 “qualified” Venezuelans into the country. The plan includes a joint effort by the United States and Mexico to crack down on human smuggling operations by establishing new migration checkpoints and additional resources to target trafficking operations. The new policy comes as the number of migrants crossing into the U.S. has surged in recent years. It also comes ahead of a midterm election in which immigration is frequently a top issue among likely Texas voters. “These actions make clear that there is a lawful and orderly way for Venezuelans to enter the United States, and lawful entry is the only way,” said Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in the announcement. He added that Venezuelans who attempt to cross the border without authorization will not only be returned to Mexico but also ineligible to apply for entry into the country in the future. Due to social unrest and political turmoil, Venezuelans have been fleeing their home country in record numbers. In recent years, 7 million Venezuelans have fled, making it the largest displacement in the Western Hemisphere and the second-largest in the world after the Syrian exodus. Many of the Venezuelans making the 3,000-mile trek from South America to the U.S.-Mexico border face extreme environmental dangers and violence along the way. “Almost four times as many Venezuelans as last year attempted to cross our southern border, placing their lives in the hands of ruthless smuggling organizations,” the DHS announcement said. “The actions the United States and Mexico are announcing today are intended to address the most acute irregular migration and help ease pressure on the cities and states receiving these individuals.” Federal immigration agents have recorded 2.1 million encounters at the Southwest border — a record number — in the first 11 months of fiscal year 2022, which ended Sept. 30. That’s a 24% increase from the entire previous fiscal year. According to federal government statistics, immigration agents encountered nearly 154,000 Venezuelans along the U.S.-Mexico border in the first 11 months of that fiscal year — a 216% increase from the entire previous fiscal year. The majority of encounters with Venezuelans have occurred in the El Paso and Del Rio areas. To be “qualified,” Venezuelans seeking entry into the United States will require someone agreeing to provide financial support and will need to pass background checks. In March 2020, the Trump administration invoked an emergency health order known as Title 42, which immigration agents have used to immediately send back to Mexico many people trying to cross the border, including asylum-seekers, without having to file charges and wait on the formal deportation process. But prior to Biden’s announcement on Wednesday, Venezuelans couldn’t be sent across the border under Title 42 because they’re on the list of nationalities Mexico wouldn’t accept. But Wednesday’s announcement called the new policies a joint venture between the U.S. and Mexico. Venezuelan migrants can’t be deported back to their country because the U.S. severed diplomatic ties with Venezuela in 2019. Instead, they have been released to local shelters. Last week, immigration agents released 6,800 migrants, many of them Venezuelans, into El Paso, a 300% weekly increase from nearly two months ago, according to El Paso’s “migrant crisis” online dashboard. Unable to support the influx of migrants, El Paso has spent upwards of $2 million on chartered buses to New York City and Chicago, transporting thousands of migrants out of the city. El Paso has transported more than 12,000 migrants, mostly to New York, since late August, according to the dashboard. Prior to El Paso’s busing of migrants, Gov. Greg Abbott used taxpayer dollars to transport thousands of migrants to Washington, D.C., New York City and Chicago. His public announcements of the buses drew condemnation from Democratic leaders across the country, who accused the Texas governor of using human beings as political pawns. Abbott’s busing strategy seemed to inspire copycats from other GOP governors. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis chartered two private planes from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard, a Massachusetts island known as a tourist destination. Many of the migrants were misled prior to boarding the flights, which has prompted multiple lawsuits against the Florida governor and an investigation by the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. Abbott’s busing strategy remains popular with a slim majority of Texas voters. According to an August poll from the University of Texas at Austin, 52% of voters supported the governor’s plan. Immigration and border security ranked as the top concern of voters ahead of the 2022 elections, with 26% of Texans voters placing it as their primary issue ahead of the state’s economy. Venezuelans have been fleeing their home country amid social unrest and political turmoil. The South American country was once one of the richest in Latin America. The United States then imposed economic sanctions on the Venezuelan government in an attempt to force President Nicolás Maduro out of power because American federal officials accused him of election fraud. Those sanctions caused the oil industry, which was the country’s economic engine, to collapse. Telcos Need To Start Building Base For 6G Metaverse – Analysts – Light Reading https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/telcos-need-to-start-building-base-for-6g-metaverse-analysts-light-reading/ It’s been almost a year since Facebook renamed itself Meta, planting the metaverse concept in our brains and sparking a ramp-up in stocks from Roblox to Nvidia. Today, the social network giant can claim 300,000 users on its Horizon Worlds platform, but at a cost of $5.7 billion in losses. For their part, telcos so far have mostly just dabbled in the metaverse. SKT is the prime exception, with its Ifland service now being exported worldwide. That is certain to change. Facebook aside, a lot of companies are raining money on the metaverse. Analysys Mason estimates that between now and 2030, the metaverse will attract $1.9 trillion in investment, including 6G and cloud capex. Staff from the research firm shared some of their thinking about the developing concept – which they like to call the 3D Internet – at their annual telecom summit this week. The metaverse is tied to 6G – and businesses are expected to shower $1.9 trillion on it over the rest of the decade. (Source: ZUMA Press Inc/Alamy Stock Photo) Their first bit of advice is that the metaverse is inextricable from 6G. Principal analyst Martin Scott says it will be the major driver of 6G network architecture evolution and investment. “Stakeholders and investors are making their plans,” he said. “Money is flowing, and new developments are underway to support these new user experiences. But they will have to wait for the new network to happen if they are to come to fruition.” 5G users’ needs may outrun development The problem for telcos has been the tepid performance of 5G. Most of its promised improvements – rich new network capabilities, diversified revenue streams and fresh user experiences – have yet to emerge. Caroline Gabriel, an Analysys Mason research director, says that 5G has been business-as-usual mobile broadband for most operators. The short-termism of this is now being seen around the world, she adds, citing the declining average revenue per user (ARPU) of Korean operators after just two years of growth. “Since the start of 5G we’ve argued the buildout can only be justified if operators expand into significant new markets and revenue streams,” Gabriel says. “Most of [the 5G vision] has not really transpired, and if operators don’t start to put the foundations of that vision in place now, the rapid evolution of user requirements will outrun 5G development, making the 5G generation potentially redundant.” Gabriel warns that if operators don’t start building the underlying pieces of 6G, it’s possible the next generation could be developed “entirely separately from the 5G ecosystem, and be primarily driven by cloud and Internet communities.” But she says telcos can take the initiative now in building out platforms “to ensure the 6G business models do become evolutions of what they put in place today and leave them with a central role in the chain.” Gabriel suggests that telcos are approaching 6G through two different paths. One is the incremental route in steadily building out capabilities such as low latency, edge and slicing for industrial clients. The other is the consumer-focused, mobile broadband-centric path until the latter part of the decade, when the 6G roadmap becomes clearer. Want to know more? Scott points to multiple potential roles for operators in the 6G metaverse era – as a connectivity provider both inside and outside the home, curating content experiences and supplying computing capability, a critical enabler. New IPhones, Samsung Phones Sold Without Chargers, Earphones, Nigerians Kick – Legit.ng https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/new-iphones-samsung-phones-sold-without-chargers-earphones-nigerians-kick-legit-ng/ Apple and Samsung have resolved to ship their latest phones to Africa without the needed accessories The phone manufacturers cited environmental issues and plastic waste as the issue Nigerians, however, refused the assertion by the two makers saying they want to burden consumers with extra costs Frontline phone manufacturers have resolved to ship phones without accessories such as earphones and chargers, citing environmental issues. The move has put pressure on consumers who have to shop for the accessories separately, incurring additional costs. Nigerians kick over Samsung and iPhones sold without accessories Credit: Joy 1000 Source: Getty Images Samsung joins Apple to ditch accessories Samsung began the practice after Apple ditched the idea and stated that it wanted to curtail plastic waste and environmental degradation. PAY ATTENTION: Share your outstanding story with our editors! Please reach us through info@corp.legit.ng! The latest iPhone 14 and 14 Pro shipments, including the Samsung S21 and S22 series, came without chargers and earphones. The Brazilian example Last month, the Brazilian government banned the sale of iPhones without chargers. The Ministry of Justice and Public Security fined the company $2.34 million for the infraction. According to the order, environmental factors are insufficient for selling the products without the requisite accessories. However, consumers in Nigeria have lamented the decision of the top phone manufacturers as cumbersome and extra costs for them after coughing out huge sums to purchase already expensive gadgets. Nigerians react on social media On Twitter, Nigerians vented their anger at the phone makers for isolating them. “Now you buy a charger and air pods after buying a phone. What’s next? Phones won’t come with batteries, and you have to buy that separately? I cannot believe we are okay with this. Vehicle manufacturers are taking notes; soon you will buy a car and then buy a battery and tyres separately. Let’s be watching! “I really hope Europe does something about this so it can cascade across the world, America is the global HQ of capitalism so nothing will happen there,” he added. @SuogheneB said: “My Samsung came without an earpiece I demanded to know why and was told some even come without a charger. Not cool at all.” @robisky6 said: “This is serious oh. So, a first-time iPhone user will have to go buy a charger separately if peradventure he doesn’t have a spare one. That’s like renting an apartment without a roof.” New features in iPhone that have been on Android for years Legit.ng reported that Apple hyped many new features at its iPhone 14 event last week, but those features are very familiar to many Android users. iPhone users are entirely into Apple’s ecosystem and may not know that many of the features the company unveiled with glee have been in Android devices for years. Apple’s much-touted reality distortion field is also a reminder not to believe every claim by Apple. Source: Legit.ng

Crypto News Today: What Are The Top 3 Under-Hyped Crypto Coins Today – Stellar, Shiba Inu, And Moshnake? | – Bitcoinist https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/crypto-news-today-what-are-the-top-3-under-hyped-crypto-coins-today-stellar-shiba-inu-and-moshnake-bitcoinist/ The coin market is similar to other financial markets worldwide. Every experienced trader knows the importance of hype and how it can spur an asset to new heights. As a result, most traders are found purchasing coins with plenty of hype around them. While this may seem like a sound strategy, an interesting thing to note is that occasionally certain coins spring out of nowhere and take over the market space. Many times, these explosive price movements occur when no one is paying attention. If you’re interested in trying another trading strategy, purchasing coins that are not the center of the news and waiting for them to bloom, this piece is for you. You’ll find a list of crypto tokens that are currently underhyped but with the potential for much more. Stellar An interesting thing to note about the coin market is that several innovative digital assets exist. Each of them offers something different. While you’ll find coins that are satisfied with solely being used as a means of payment and transfer of assets, others provide a unique type of utility. Stellar is one of those projects introducing an entirely different set of features to the coin market. This cryptocurrency is designed to support payment systems worldwide. It aims to be the first blockchain-based solution to unite the traditional financial system. Think of the near-limitless potential that traditional financial institutions would enjoy if their transactions could be processed seamlessly without lengthy confirmations. This means that Stellar can be used to process cryptocurrency transactions. Stellar was a decentralized protocol created by the Stellar Development Foundation. XLM is the token that powers this decentralized protocol. Through token burns, the Stellar Development Foundation plans to maintain a high price of its digital asset. These burns will reduce the overall total supply of Stellar. Shiba Inu Shiba Inu was among the most popular meme coins on the coin market. But the hype around it has died down significantly. After Shiba Inu proved it could compete with Dogecoin, many users started flocking to it. They believed that Shiba Inu would be the next top coin in the crypto space. There were some interesting things to note about Shiba Inu. To start with, Shiba Inu adopts a community-driven approach. This means that a community of users will determine its growth and development. Today, there are more than five hundred thousand users on Shiba Inu, and there are still more on the way. This active community of users is referred to as the Shiba Army. Also, Shiba Inu’s developers recognized some of the deficiencies of Dogecoin. That’s why they have ensured that Shiba Inu will have a limited market supply. Furthermore, Shiba Inu is more than a meme coin. It will be an ecosystem of cryptocurrency activities. Through the ShibaSwap, users can trade different cryptocurrencies for each other. Shiba Inu has introduced token burns to reduce the number of SHIB in circulation and force its value to increase. Moshnake Moshnake is a play-to-earn NFT game that has won the hearts of crypto users worldwide. Why have users fallen in love with this crypto token? Well, Moshnake adopts the same system as an early retro game. So, this game brings back unique memories for users. Anyone can be a part of Moshnake’s gaming world, but you’ll need to get your own NFT snake to get started. You can buy either viper, cobra, krait or mamba. However, you need to note that the prices and attributes of each of them are different. Players will earn money from taking care of their NFT snake. The longer it gets, the more money you’ll earn from it. Your snake will grow by feeding it eggs and other in-game items. To purchase these items, you’ll spend MSH tokens. Recruiter Hays Flags Slower Hiring Activity In UK, U.S. – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/recruiter-hays-flags-slower-hiring-activity-in-uk-u-s-reuters/ Oct 13 (Reuters) – British recruitment agency Hays Plc (HAYS.L) said on Thursday client and candidate activity had slowed in some markets, including the UK and the United States, because of macroeconomic uncertainties. The recruitment industry is facing risks of a slowdown from soaring inflation and sharp economic slowdown after seeing sizzling growth in the last couple of years from increasing wages and high job churn amid intense competition for talent. “Our forward-looking client and candidate activity levels remain good overall, particularly in Germany and EMEA, but have reduced modestly in a number of other markets,” said Chief Executive Alistair Cox, referring to the UK & Ireland, Australia & New Zealand and the United States where activity has slowed. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “This said, our key markets continue to be characterised by acute skill shortages and wage inflation,” he added. Rival PageGroup (PAGE.L) said on Wednesday it had seen a “slight softening” in employer confidence across most markets, leading to some job withdrawals and a hiring slowdown at the end of the third quarter. Hays, London’s biggest publicly listed recruiter, said the weakening of sterling compared to its main trading currencies of the euro and Australian dollar was currently a tailwind to its annual operating profit. The London-based company, which is largely focused on hiring for white-collar roles, said net fees grew at a slower pace of 19% in its first quarter ended Sept. 30, compared with a 36% rise a year earlier. Indian Institutes Of Technology Want Foreign Students Inside Higher Ed
Indian Institutes Of Technology Want Foreign Students Inside Higher Ed
Indian Institutes Of Technology Want Foreign Students – Inside Higher Ed https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/indian-institutes-of-technology-want-foreign-students-inside-higher-ed/ Scholars have called a proposal by the Indian Institutes of Technology to quadruple their international student intake by 2025 “feasible” but say they will first need to decide whether they are willing to lower entry requirements for nonlocal applicants. This month, a meeting of IITs proposed to boost their international intake to 5 percent by 2025, creating 1,000 scholarships for foreign learners and establishing recruitment centers in neighboring countries, according to news reports. The proposal comes on the heels of a recent decision by India’s higher education regulator, which allows institutions to reserve up to 25 percent seats for international students. Scholars speaking to Times Higher Education broadly agreed IITs could reach the target, particularly given that nonnationals would not be competing with domestic students for seats. Still, they said large questions remain around how admissions practices will need to change to accommodate sizable numbers of overseas applicants. Philip Altbach, a professor at Boston College’s Center for International Higher Education, said that the IITs’ “global top reputation” made it realistic for them to ramp up their international intake, with students most likely to come from South Asia and Africa. But he said that setting admissions requirements would require some flexibility on the infamously difficult IIT entrance exams, for which Indians spend years preparing. “If they’re going to expect international students to take the IIT entrance exam and to pass it at a competitive rate, then it won’t work,” he said. An administrator at one of the country’s older IITs, who asked not to be named, told Times Higher Education that IITs’ “brand value” would prove an attractive draw for foreign learners, but he agreed that institutions would need to rethink their admissions processes. “The normal entrance exam route is unlikely to work for international applicants,” he said. Scholars said that IITs could potentially create a replacement exam or lower barriers for international students—something already being done domestically under India’s “reservation system,” with different entry levels for students from depressed castes or tribal groups. Still, such moves would need to be carefully weighed, given the resources invested into exam preparation, said Altbach. “I could see there might be some pushback from these families who spend lots of money on coaching courses for the exam,” he said. But even if IITs figure out how to make entrance exams more accessible to students applying from abroad, they will need to address other considerations, including whether foreign students will be interested in attending IITs located outside India’s main cities. Academics noted that newer IITs, which were established after the initial handful of institutions in the 1950s, are less geographically attractive and lack the more seasoned faculty and facilities of their older peers. Eldho Matthews, a deputy adviser to the Unit for International Cooperation at the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration, in New Delhi, said that some of the newer IITs, which are located in smaller towns such as Palakkad, Mandi and Dharwad, have “locational disadvantages.” He believed India should focus on drawing international talent to cities including New Delhi and Mumbai. “A selective approach by showcasing the older IITs located in the metro centers and big cities would be helpful,” he said.

Robert Eugene Fikac | Obituaries | Herald-Zeitung.com – Herald Zeitung https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/robert-eugene-fikac-obituaries-herald-zeitung-com-herald-zeitung/ Robert Eugene Fikac was born to Danny Joseph Fikac and Krissa Louise Procknow Fikac in Houston, Texas, on January 24, 1981.  He grew up in New Braunfels, where he was cherished by, and devoted to, his grandparents. He had a strong bond with his great-grandmother, Julia Kresta. They celebrated their birthdays together, since she was born on January 23, 1902, and their relationship helped inspire his interest in family history.  Family traditions delighted Robert. He loved the memory of his Grandmom, Lillian Fikac, making a Rice Krispies “cake” every year for his birthday, a treat he enjoyed into adulthood. He joked about the family birthday photos, taken year after year in front of the same window at the dining room table. As a child, he went to Mass every Sunday with his Poe-Poe, Leonard Fikac. He waited in the back pew while Poe-Poe finished ushering, and then joined him for a doughnut and orange juice at the church.   Family remained important to Robert throughout his life. He looked up to his big brother and adored his little sister. He loved them both so much. As a young man, he helped care for his Grandfather Procknow, and they enjoyed having a meal at Applebee’s (his grandfather’s favorite restaurant). He always looked forward to the shopping sprees on Saturday to San Antonio with his Grandma Procknow and his mom. Robert always knew he would be coming back with something special. He brightened difficult days for his Grandmom by calling her after Poe-Poe passed. He was devoted to his mother. He had hoped to go to the Czech Republic with his father one day, since they both shared a love of Czech tradition. He had a loving relationship with his aunts, uncles and cousins. Robert was a warm, loving, steadfast friend and mentor. He was also the best dog dad to Harley. Robert could show a bold manner, especially when talking about his days in law enforcement, but he also had extraordinary compassion for those experiencing a difficult time. A devout Catholic, he not only studied his religion, he lived his faith. His humor was exceptional and flashed through to the very end of his life. Loved ones surrounded him as he passed on October 10, 2022.  Robert’s work with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Department was an important part of his life. He was proud to be a public servant, and he made and kept many friends in law enforcement. He also worked in other fields and always maintained a strong interest in the law and politics. He graduated from New Braunfels High School and studied criminal justice at San Antonio College. Robert was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edith & Lyle Procknow and Lillian & Leonard Fikac. He is survived by his mother, Krissa; father, Danny Fikac; stepmother, Suzanne Fikac; brother Danny Jr. Fikac, Danny Jr.’s fiancée, Terri Boyer-Parsons; sister, Emily Fikac; his best friend, Tommy Robertson; and his aunts, uncles and cousins.  Visitation will be Thursday, October 20th @ 5:00 pm, with rosary at 6:00 pm at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home. The funeral service will be Friday, October 21st @ 10:00 am at Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels, TX, followed by the burial at Saints Peter & Paul Mausoleum.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to ACT a nonprofit community outreach and support arm of the Deputy Sheriff’s Association of Bexar County, 9200 Broadway, Ste. 106, San Antonio, TX 78217, in memory of Robert Fikac. Trips To Italy, 6-Course Dinners And Endless Booze: Do Fancy Work Trips Really Stop Staff Leaving? – Euronews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/trips-to-italy-6-course-dinners-and-endless-booze-do-fancy-work-trips-really-stop-staff-leaving-euronews/ Imagine waking up to early morning yoga in the hills of Piedmont. Archery lessons overlooking a sprawling castle. Limousines, five-star hotels and Michelin-starred cuisine. But this isn’t a holiday. This is a company offsite. As we emerge from pandemic lockdowns and restrictions, many companies are maintaining a fully remote model. In some cases, in-person interactions have become a thing of the past, making it challenging to establish a strong company culture. For some companies, a team lunch doesn’t cut it anymore. They’re looking at far-flung locations, luxury hotel stays and meticulously designed experiences to quickly establish trust between employees that have only met through a screen. We spoke with some experts to learn more about the trend, and why it’s important.  What is a company offsite? Offsites are team-building days designed to bond employees, brainstorm, boost morale and establish a company culture. These are often an opportunity for managers to organise focus groups and explore the ‘big picture’ goals of the company. The ‘traditional’ image of a company team-building day is in a hotel conference room, with employees taking part in challenges and presentations. Now, and especially as we emerge from the pandemic, companies are blurring the line between work and vacation to keep a stronghold on company culture. What do company offsites look like today? There have been reports of Uber taking its employees to a Beyoncé concert in Las Vegas, a WeWork summer camp fueled with booze and sex, and Glossier’s lavish ‘glamping’ trips. The New York Post reports the owner of a Chicago recruiting company “used the money her company saved on office rent during 2020 and 2021 to shell out $80,000 [€82,500] for her employees to take a three-day weekend trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in February.” And at night, the booze always comes out. “It’s still one of the oldest tricks in the book if you want to get people to bond,” Johannes Hoyos, owner of the Piedmont-based Workation Village, says to Euronews Travel. “Give them some booze and then it’s gonna happen.” Aron Solomon, the head of strategy at Esquire Digital, also noted that all-nighters in Berlin and Paris, clubs, and lavish dinners are pretty commonplace for big firms. “Believe me, when they go to these offsites, they stay in the best hotels, they’re eating at the best restaurants – at least the big companies, the big law and accounting firms,” Solomon reveals. “We’re talking about a lot of expensive meals. We’re talking about limousines for airport transfers, $500 to $700 [€515-€720] night rooms.” Which destinations are most popular for company offsites? Solomon says US companies are looking to Europe more than ever, and expects this to continue into next year. He expects this is a reaction to the pandemic lockdowns. “People have missed Europe… A lot of these executives or people who get to go offsite, who might have travelled to Europe regularly, have missed it,” he says. “So the idea of a company doing an offsite kills two birds with one stone.” New companies have been popping up in Europe that design and host company team-building trips. Again, we’re not talking about a conference room or business lunch. Solomon predicts companies will be looking for “something kind of exotic” in their 2023 offsites. In 2021, Hoyos transformed a sparsely populated Italian village into a campus for company trips. The Workation Village hosts multi-day offsites for big names like Google and Spotify, for up to 200 people. Hoyos tells Euronews Travel to think of it as a sort of countryside boutique hotel meets modern co-working space meets yoga retreat meets adventure space. According to Hoyos, being in a stunning natural setting is conducive to creative and productive thinking. “Our brains are super hardwired to come back again to certain patterns of thought,” he explains. “When we are in our typical environments – cities, airports, meeting rooms, office spaces, restaurants, hotels – [they] tend to trigger these patterns that we are hardwired to.” Breaking routine and being in a natural setting breaks that cycle. What’s the point of company away days? Though individual companies may plan away days with specific goals, there’s one theme that seems everpresent: building trust. This is especially important now in a remote working environment. Most of the Workation Village’s clients are technology companies that are otherwise working remotely. – “The goal of those teams is to get to know one another because they normally don’t work together in the same space,” Hoyos says. “That’s one of the key issues. How do you build trust?”  Hoyos describes that being in such close proximity in a new environment can create bonds between employees in a way that may not be possible virtually. “Say for the first time in your life, you’re participating in yoga and you do these awkward movements and you feel a bit embarrassed,” he theorises. “But then you feel like it’s ok, and this creates trust.” Now, in the age of social media, cool offsites have also been an opportunity for company branding. “We have local photographers and videographers, and we help [employees] to use content around their experiences here to tell the story about their company, their team, company culture, and so on,” Hoyos says. As businesses continue to adapt to hybrid systems – and employees become more selective about the companies they work for – offsite opportunities could be a powerful tool in the modern workplace.
