CHEVY CHASE, Maryland — National 4-H Council recently announced that Norah Carter, 18, of Gibsonia, Pennsylvania, was named winner of the 2023 4-H Youth in Action Award for Healthy Living.
Carter will be recognized nationally for developing and leading a hands-on educational program about mindfulness and stress management for teens and tweens.
Launched in 2010, the 4-H Youth in Action Awards recognize 4-H’ers who have applied the knowledge gained in 4-H to create a lasting impact in their communities while overcoming personal obstacles.
As a national winner, Carter will receive a $5,000 higher education scholarship and spend 2023 inspiring other youth by telling her 4-H story and celebrating her leadership. In addition, she will have opportunities to showcase her story nationally, network with prominent 4-H alumni, and serve as the official 4-H youth spokesperson for Healthy Living.
Connections
“After seeing the emotional impact that the pandemic had on my peers, I knew that I had to get involved to lift them up during this tough time — and 4-H helped me do just that,” said Carter. “Using my experience living with a disability, paired with 4-H curricula, I was able to connect with at-risk populations through workshops to help them navigate the difficulties they were facing in a healthy and productive way.”
Carter was introduced to Pennsylvania 4-H through competitive therapeutic riding classes when she was 8 years old. She used the resiliency and coping skills she developed while navigating life with a disability and adapted 4-H health curriculums to help other youth cope with the unique challenges they were facing throughout the pandemic.
By teaching the curriculum online, Norah was able to reach diverse audiences including inner-city middle school students, suburban tweens and previously-incarcerated youth.
She has also co-facilitated a four-session workshop on anti-vaping, the importance of strong social circles and stress coping mechanisms. Carter is one of four 2023 4-H Youth in Action Award Pillar Winners who were announced during National 4-H Week, held Oct. 2-8.
Other winners
The other winners announced include Matias Habib of Illinois (Agriculture), Nicole Cash of Minnesota (STEM) and Sruthi Sudarson of California (Civic Engagement).
“We are proud to honor our 2023 Youth in Action winners, a group of exceptional young people who have overcome obstacles and made an incredible impact on their communities through Cooperative Extension’s 4-H programs,” said Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO, National 4-H Council.
“By empowering these stand-out youth and fostering their skills to make change, they in turn can inspire thousands of other young people wanting to make a difference. When given the tools they need to lead, 4-H’ers like Matias, Sruti, Norah and Nicole are becoming the next generation of changemakers in their communities and for our country.”
Carter leveraged her role as vice president of operations of the Pennsylvania’s State 4-H Council to advocate for a statewide theme of diversity and inclusion called “Be Different, Together,” which was recognized and accepted by her state 4-H program.
A freshman at Denison University, Carter is studying global health and politics, philosophy and economics and hopes to work in public policy or law as an advocate for those with physical and mental disabilities.

BEREA — Jacoby Brissett’s been classy for the Browns, not clutch.
After throwing three interceptions, all in the final three minutes of Cleveland’s three losses, Brissett watched the game film and dissected every detail of his picks, two of which ended the Browns’ chance at a comeback.
He looked for a common thread, reasons for the mistakes. Brissett found them and figured out how to prevent a recurrence.
“It’s no scientific answer,” he said. “It’s just don’t do it.”
If it were only that simple.
His picks aside, Brissett has been everything the Browns (2-3) could have hoped while starting while quarterback Deshaun Watson serves his 11-game suspension for alleged sexual misconduct. Brissett has played well while providing leadership and stability to a potentially awkward situation.
Only in crunch time, he’s crumbled.
On Sunday, with the Browns trailing the Los Angeles Chargers by one and only needing a field goal to take the lead, Brissett made a bad decision inside the 10-yard line and threw an interception in the end zone with 2:55 left.
A week earlier in Atlanta, Brissett forced a pass into heavy coverage and was intercepted with 1:03 remaining to secure the Falcons’ 23-20 win. And in Week 2, after the Browns had melted down and blown a 13-point lead in the final two minutes, Brissett was intercepted with 13 seconds to go.
There’s nothing he can do about the miscues now but learn from them. He can’t look over his shoulder despite his days as a starter dwindling with Watson returning to the team’s facility as his ban nears its end.
Brissett’s only option? Move forward.
“It’s something that’s part of the game that obviously I’m trying to work on and get better at,” he said Wednesday when asked about his late-game errors. “And, listen, clearly I haven’t lost trust in myself or confidence in myself.”
Brissett’s next chance to atone will be Sunday as the Browns host the New England Patriots (2-3), who drafted him in 2016 and had to start him as a rookie when Tom Brady was suspended for “Deflategate” and backup Jimmy Garoppolo got hurt.
Brissett has fond memories of his one season with New England, and the Patriots remember him as dependable.
“Jacoby looks like Jacoby,” coach Bill Belichick said. “Big kid. Strong arm. Tough. Smart. Does a good job with the system that they’re running. Doesn’t turn the ball over.”
Brissett’s reputation for avoiding turnovers was one of the main reasons he appealed to the Browns when they were looking for a quarterback to plug in during Watson’s absence. In 30 starts over four seasons with Indianapolis, he only threw 13 interceptions.
And while his three this season are magnified because of when they happened, they haven’t caused coach Kevin Stefanski to lose any faith in Brissett.
“There are going to be moments that you absolutely have to bounce back from,” Stefanski said, “and just the makeup that Jacoby has and the things he’s seen, the things he’s been through, I have no doubt in my mind that he will be ready to go Sunday.”
Brissett’s teammates are equally confident. They’ve been impressed with the 29-year-old’s composure and consistency and don’t see that changing.
“Jacoby’s a great player,” said Nick Chubb, the NFL’s leading rusher. “We all know it’s a bad decision (the interception against the Chargers), but he’s owned up to it. He feels really guilty about it, but then again, he’s the one who put us in position to win the game time in and time out.
“Those things happen. We’ve all been there, so it’s not really something to beat yourself up over. You just gotta learn from it.”
Brissett promised to do just that. He’s overcome self-doubt, anxiety and grown from experiences — good and bad.
He’s not going to let a couple of bad throws, albeit costly ones, change him.
“It’s over now. The game’s over,” he said. “I can’t go back and do anything about that. I moved past that a long time ago. So excited for this opportunity and this next one we got.”
NOTES: Newly acquired LB Deion Jones practiced for the first time since coming over in a trade from Atlanta. Cleveland’s defense has allowed more than 200 yards rushing the past two games, and Jones could help plug the middle. Jones is trying to quickly learn the Browns’ system, and Stefanski said it’s possible he’ll play this week. … DE Jadeveon Clowney sat out practice with ankle, knee and elbow injuries. … Pro Bowl CB Denzel Ward remains in the concussion protocol.

Bitcoin’s Ongoing Sounds of Silence
Bitcoin’s quiet life continued.
The largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization was recently trading just over $19,100, about flat for the past 24 hours as investors waited for Thursday’s release of the next U.S. Consumer Price Index (CPI). Barring the unexpected, the CPI is expected to show a slight drop, but hardly sufficient to sway the U.S. central bank from its current monetary aggressiveness. BTC has remained rangebound for weeks, largely between $19,000 and $21,000, although it dipped briefly below the lower support on Wednesday. Trading volume has remained tepid, falling regularly below 20-day averages.
“Nothing happening today, Bodhi Pinkner, a research analyst at crypto-focused financial services firm Arca, told CoinDesk. “Markets were up marginally.”
Pinkner added: “Very, very low trading volumes across the space. We’ve been stuck in a range.”
Ether, the second largest crypto in market value, was recently changing hands below $1,300, about where it stood much of Wednesday but up roughly 1% from Tuesday, same time. Other major cryptos were mostly flat, although SUSHI recently fell more than 5%, while TRON was up more than 1%. The CoinDesk Market Index (CMI), a broad-based market index that measures the performance of a basket of cryptocurrencies, was flat.
Stocks cast their promising first two days of October further in the rearview mirror as the tech-heavy Nasdaq, the S&P 500, which has a strong technology component, and Dow Jones Industrial Average extended their current losing streaks to six days. Markets chewed nervously over a 0.4% increase in September’s producer-price index, a discouraging sign following the previous month’s slight decrease.
CPI observers anticipate the latest reading remaining above 8% with core inflation, which eliminates the impact of volatile food and energy prices, rising to 6.5%, a four-decade high. The increase would bolster an already determined Federal Reserve’s argument for continuing its recent diet of sharp interest rate hikes, discouraging already skittish investors from riskier assets.
In an on-stage discussion Wednesday at the International Monetary Fund’s annual meeting, the organization’s Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, said that central banks should refrain from currency interventions, instead suggesting that they use interest-rate raises as the preferred tool for combating foreign-exchange weakness versus the dollar. “Do not waste your reserves to protect your currency,” Georgieva said
Arca’s Pinkner noted a downward trend in the correlation between cryptocurrencies and other risk assets “over the last couple of months. “However, in order for any decoupling, you likely need a catalyst, and it’s possible that catalyst would be widespread currency debasement across various economies and mostly to bitcoin as a non-sovereign, safe haven asset, and it’s possible that catalyst is unforeseen or that there’s just no catalyst, and we remain correlated to risk assets.”

The Metaverse Struggles to Catch On
The Metaverse is in need of a census. A few have tried, but so far nobody can agree about the findings of the enumerators.
Horizon Worlds, like Decentraland and the metaverse at large, isn’t as popular as what Mark Zuckerberg or Metaverse token holders want you to think. The problem is in the numbers.
Earlier this month, The Verge reported Meta’s VR social network Horizon Worlds is so bug-ridden that even its developers aren’t using it much.
“But currently feedback from our creators, users, playtesters, and many of us on the team is that the aggregate weight of papercuts, stability issues, and bugs is making it too hard for our community to experience the magic of Horizon,” Meta’s VP of Metaverse, Vishal Shah, wrote in a memo obtained by The Verge. “Simply put, for an experience to become delightful and retentive, it must first be usable and well crafted.”
Meta claims that Horizon Worlds has 300,000 signups, but there’s no indication of how many are active users.
One proxy could involve looking at the population of related Facebook groups: the official Horizon Worlds page has 31,644 followers while an official Horizon Worlds Facebook community group has 28,200 members. Let’s assume there’s plenty of overlap meaning the higher number is the total addressable market.
If we want to figure out the serviceable available market we must look at the install base of virtual reality headsets.
(Steam Hardware Survey/Steampowered.com)
Digital gaming store Steam – a must-have for any PC gamer – says that 2% of its 132 million monthly active users have a VR headset. Of this two million, 64% are using Meta’s Oculus headsets, putting the install base at 1.28 million.
So with that in mind, even if Meta’s figure of 300,000 is correct it only means that 23% of its VR install base is using what Meta believes to be the future of the company. But that’s the best-case scenario, the more realistic number is closer to 31,644 which would mean that around 2% of the VR install base is using Horizon Worlds as Meta intended.
Decentraland’s fuzzy math
But what about Decentraland? There was some MANA mania earlier this week when CoinDesk, citing DappRadar numbers, reported that it was a lonely world with 38 people in the $1.3 billion ecosystem.
DappRadar’s number relies on analyzing smart contracts from Decentraland that are being interacted with. Decentraland HQ says it’s not looking at the whole picture and only a handful of the hundreds of available smart contracts.
Decentraland, instead, offers its own sets of numbers via its portal DCL-Metrics which says that there have been around 7000 unique users in the last 24 hours visiting 6900-odd virtual parcels.
The validity of these numbers begins to dissolve once you take a closer look at them. Their data shows that there are also dozens of ‘marathon users’ that have spent the majority of the day in Decentraland.
Marathon users (https://dcl-metrics.com/)
There’s also another list of users – that don’t seem to overlap – that have visited hundreds of parcels during the course of the day.
Clearly, there are bots among us.
Perhaps the most realistic number from DCL-Metrics could be found in the daily active users at the ICE Poker house, which it says is just under 3000. This might actually be where Decentraland’s real population lies as ICE Poker has an actual, documented player base.
There are two more stars in the sky of data that can help us triangulate a position.
On Github, Decentraland runs something called a Catalyst Monitor, a tool for tracking the load on each of its servers which it calls catalysts.
The count from the servers shows that there are 518 total users on the platform as of late Wednesday afternoon Asia time.
This number comes close to the headcount of 457 that Nansen estimates on its Entity Billboard tool. Nansen would like to stress that this tool is very much in Beta, and only tracks 72 of the smart contracts Decentraland uses.
At the same time, there are 269,698 unique holders of MANA tokens. Even if we use some best-case numbers from ICE’s poker house count of 3000 as a proxy for Decentraland’s total active population (this would be a best case scenario, realistically the number is closer to what Catalyst and Nansen provide) that means only 1% of MANA token holders are users of the platform.
Not exactly a bullish case for Decentraland and the Metaverse at large.
But we had all of this a decade ago with Second Life. Which had better graphics, smoother gameplay, and an actual community – not token holders pumping their bags trying to make you believe that this is the future of the internet.
In case you missed it, here is the most recent episode of “First Mover” on CoinDesk TV:
There’s been another massive exploit in crypto, this time tied to market manipulation on Mango, a Solana-based decentralized exchange. “First Mover” discussed the state of the crypto industry and markets with Tribe Capital co-founder and CEO Arjun Sethi. CoinDesk’s Cheyenne Ligon provided an update in Grayscale’s lawsuit against the SEC over the agency’s rejection of Grayscale’s Bitcoin ETF application. With the increased popularity of convenience appliances, you will find an abundance of recipes for every appliance you can think of. Instant pots and air fryers have been all the rage the past few years. I frequently remind people that good old pressure cookers have been around a long time, just not as simple to use as the newer electric automatic instant pots.
Many of the recipes today can be altered to conventional methods of cooking by increasing cooking time and temperature. You do not have to have all of the gadgets to prepare many recipes. Have fun experimenting and trying new dishes with whatever cooking method you choose to use.

Combine brown sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl; mix well and set aside.
Unroll dough and separate into two 12-inch-by-4-inch rectangles; firmly press perforations to seal. Brush dough with melted butter and sprinkle with brown sugar mixture. Sprinkle with cranberries and pecans.
Starting with long side, roll up tightly jelly-roll style, pinch seams to seal. Cut each roll crosswise into 12 1-inch slices with a serrated knife.
Preheat air fryer to 370 degrees. Bake in batches for eight to 10 minutes or until golden. Remove to wire rack; cool.
Combine powdered sugar and one tablespoon orange juice in a small bowl; whisk until smooth. Add additional juice, one teaspoon at a time, to reach desired glaze consistency. Drizzle glaze over buns. Makes two dozen.

Clusters Of Genes Help Mice Live Longer, Team Reports – EurekAlert https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/clusters-of-genes-help-mice-live-longer-team-reports-eurekalert/
SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 12, 2022) — Researchers from the National Institute on Aging (NIA)-funded Interventions Testing Program recently reported the discovery of multiple candidate genes that influence longevity. The three Interventions Testing Program sites – The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and The Jackson Laboratory at Bar Harbor, Maine – collaborated on the study with the labs of Robert W. Williams, PhD, of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center at Memphis and Johan Auwerx, MD, PhD, of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland.
“Some candidate genes impacted female life span while others affected the male life span,” said Randy Strong, PhD, of the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute for Longevity and Aging Studies at UT Health San Antonio. “One cluster of genes increased longevity of both sexes. In a rarity for these types of studies, the findings were made in a population of mice with genetic diversity comparable to human populations.”
The high-impact journal Science published the findings Sept. 30. Strong directs the Interventions Testing Program site at the Barshop Institute, which first attracted National Institute on Aging (NIA) grant funding for the Interventions Testing Program in 2003 and is in its 19th year of the NIA funding.
Genetic smorgasbord
“The study models what happens in people,” said research coauthor James Nelson, PhD, of the Barshop Institute. “Unlike mice in many other studies, mice in this newly reported research are not all the same. Each has different genetic variants, resulting in slightly different proteins that do slightly different things, which together can impact aging.”
Even subtle differences can lead to different health outcomes as we age. Slight variations in the hemoglobin gene, for example, can cause the hemoglobin protein in red blood cells to be less effective at binding to oxygen and transferring it from the lungs to the body’s tissues, Nelson noted. Anemia is one effect.
Female longevity
The discovery of genetic loci that influence longevity only in females is interesting and important, Strong said. Genetic loci are clusters of between 10 and 100 genes.
“Females and males differ in almost every aspect of aging you can explore,” Strong said. “They each must be studied, both to understand aging in the two sexes and to develop effective treatments. If we offer the same drug therapies to females that we offer to males, and females’ aging is caused by different genes, we are not going to be as effective in our treatments.”
Confirmation in roundworms
The next steps are scrutinizing these candidate genes to find ones that are responsible for increased longevity. In the final part of the Science article, the team reported doing this. The researchers tested candidate genes in roundworms, which are often used in aging research because of their short life span. “A number of the candidate genes did affect longevity in the worms,” Nelson said.
That doesn’t prove that those same genes in humans are going to affect human life span, the researchers said. But it’s another part of the case for continuing to study the genetic basis of longevity.
Powerful study design
As envisioned when the Interventions Testing Program began, having three sites where studies are conducted ensures statistical power and rigor and reproducibility of findings, Strong said.
The study is unique in that it is based on a large sample size of animals numbering several thousand, the authors said. “It is among the largest number of mice of any study that has attempted to identify genes that influence life span,” Nelson said.
Barshop Institute excellence
The Interventions Testing Program is one of several NIA-funded centers at the Sam and Ann Barshop Institute. Among them, the Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging provides core services to enhance research of the fundamental biological questions of aging. The Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, named for the late U.S. representative, is a center of excellence aimed at increasing scientific knowledge to develop better ways of maintaining or restoring independence in senior adults. The Barshop Institute is the only institute or university in the nation to have these three centers.
Strong is a tenured professor of pharmacology in the Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long School of Medicine at UT Health San Antonio. Nelson is a tenured professor of cellular and integrative physiology in the Long School of Medicine.

Universal Studios Is Bringing Back Its Harry Potter & Grinch Holiday Celebrations – Thrillist https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/universal-studios-is-bringing-back-its-harry-potter-grinch-holiday-celebrations-thrillist/
Universal Studios Hollywood has announced that this year’s “Awesomest Celebration of the Season” holiday events will include the return of “Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter” and “Grinchmas.” The events will start on Black Friday, November 25, and run through New Year’s Day.
Unlike how things run for Halloween Horror Nights, all of the holiday activities at Universal Studios Hollywood will be included in the general theme park admission.
During “Christmas in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” Hogsmeade will be transformed into a wizardly holiday celebration. Charm your inner Andy Bernard with an a cappella performance from the Hogwarts Frog Choir and holiday meals at the Three Broomsticks. There is, of course, lots of holiday-themed merch for sale as well.
Additionally, at night, Hogwarts Castle will come alive with lights during a light projection show called “The Magic of Christmas at Hogwarts Castle.”
At Universal Plaza, you’ll see the “Grinchmas” celebration, including a 65-foot-tall “Grinchmas” tree with hundreds of ornaments and LED lights. There’s a tree-lighting ceremony nightly, hosted by the Grinch with songs and snowballs. For younger kids, there is also a storytime led by Cindy-Lou Who. She will, naturally, tell the story of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
In addition to those events, there will be a general aura of merriment around the park with the Universal CityWalk decorated for the season with a 40-foot-tall Christmas tree featuring more than 200,000 LED lights. There will also be seasonal food around the park, including a special lineup of treats at Voodoo Doughnut.
There might not be much snow in California in November, but the park can get you into the spirit of the snowy season starting next month.

WWF Just Published A Grim Report Card For Wildlife. Heres What It Does And Doesnt Tell Us. Vox.com
WWF Just Published A Grim Report Card For Wildlife. Here’s What It Does — And Doesn’t — Tell Us. – Vox.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/wwf-just-published-a-grim-report-card-for-wildlife-heres-what-it-does-and-doesnt-tell-us-vox-com/
One of the planet’s largest conservation groups, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), just published a frightening statistic: Populations of most major animal groups, including mammals, birds, and fish, have declined by an average of 69 percent in the last half century.
It’s worse for animals in certain habitats and regions. Communities of freshwater species, such as fish and frogs, have declined by an average of 83 percent, globally, whereas populations of all major vertebrate groups found in Latin America have fallen by an average of 94 percent during the same period.
WWF and the Zoological Society of London, another nonprofit, calculated these stunning figures using a popular metric called the Living Planet Index (LPI). The index is designed to measure how animal populations, on the whole, are changing through time. The idea is that this figure can provide an early warning that ecosystems are in peril, according to Rebecca Shaw, the chief scientist at WWF.
“What we care about is ecosystem health,” she told Vox. “That’s what underpins a stable climate, healthy food production, healthy water production, and, really, human health.”

Big numbers (i.e. “a 69 percent decline”) tend to make headlines for a few obvious reasons. For one, they appear simple. They’re also extreme. And for many decades, environmental groups have relied on negative numbers to raise money for conservation.
These headline figures are undoubtedly important; they highlight a very real and very severe crisis of biodiversity loss. The problem is that they’re confusing and often misinterpreted in a big way. Even when they’re not, there’s a lot that these headline numbers leave out, including the more hopeful data and stories that demonstrate how conservation can actually work.
What the Living Planet Index is and what it isn’t
A day in the life of an ecologist often includes counting animals. They tally up bug splats on car windshields, fly drones over colonies of waterbirds, and strap camouflaged cameras to trees that snap photos when animals stroll by.
Over time, these counts reveal how wildlife populations are changing. If a group of manatees in Florida, for example, runs out of food one year, a later survey may find fewer of them, revealing a population decline, often expressed as a negative percentage.
The Living Planet Index is built upon all of this counting.
To come up with the global LPI, scientists first calculate how individual populations of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish have changed between 1970 and 2018 (the data always lags behind a few years). A population of, say, 1,000 manatees that has lost 500 has decreased by 50 percent. The same is true for a population of 10 that has lost just five.
Then they average up all of those changes, be they increases or decreases, to produce one number. That means the index is an average of changes in population sizes, not the average of the number of creatures lost. (Our World In Data has a very helpful explanation if you want to learn more.)

But let’s turn back to the headline figure from WWF’s report: 69 percent. That number suggests that if you average all the changes in wildlife populations, globally, since 1970 — a population of frogs is down, a community of gorillas is up, and so on — you’ll get a decrease of 69 percent.
That figure is broadly helpful. It helps us understand that a lot of animal populations are in decline. But — and this is crucial — that figure does not mean there are two-thirds fewer animals today compared to 50 years ago. Again, it’s not counting all the animals lost in each group and adding that up; it’s measuring the relative size of the decline in each population and averaging it.
The Living Planet Index for animals that live in freshwater.
WWF/Zoological Society of London
It’s this distinction that is confusing and most often misinterpreted. Two year ago, when WWF published the last edition of the report, which revealed a similar result — an average decline of 68 percent globally — several news outlets ran stories like, “The world lost two-thirds of its wildlife in 50 years.” That’s wrong.
“[The global index is] constantly being interpreted as we’ve lost 69 percent or 68 percent of the abundance of animals worldwide,” said Brian Leung, an associate professor of ecology at McGill University. “It’s not that. It’s not just that everything is in decline.”
WWF has tried to get ahead of misleading headlines, explaining in the report that a 69 percent decline doesn’t mean that 69 percent of individual animals have been lost. It also presents a ton of other information in the report, including other metrics that often get overlooked. “We’re going overboard this time to be really clear about what this indicator is and what it’s not,” Shaw said of the LPI. “We can’t really control the interpretations in the media.”
Even if all the media reports take pains to represent the LPI statistics accurately, there’s still a lot these figures leave out. That’s not a knock on WWF or ZSL — the global Living Planet Index is an impressive analysis. But on its own, it’s just not the whole picture.
No single metric is perfect
In recent years, scientists have pointed out other shortcomings of the LPI, such as that extreme outliers — namely, wildlife populations that have declined massively since 1970 — can bring the overall average down. Research by Leung showed that if you remove these outliers, the overall trend of the global LPI is much less dramatic (you can read the responses to that paper here; WWF addresses outliers in the supplementary information for the report). Other studies have pointed out that some statistical methods used to calculate the LPI also seem to favor a negative trend.
Then again, consider what the LPI is trying to do: summarize global biodiversity loss in a single number. That’s not easy, said Hannah Ritchie, the head of research at Our World In Data, who has written a lot about LPI. As she told Vox over email, any metric on that scale is going to have some important caveats. That’s why scientists I spoke to tended to direct their criticisms at the idea of summarizing biodiversity loss in general, not at the LPI per se.
“There’s no such thing as a perfect indicator,” said Falko Buschke, an ecologist and freelance researcher, who led a study last year that looked at how random fluctuations in animal populations affect the LPI. These headline figures are useful for advocacy, he added, but from a science perspective they’re often confusing and can raise more questions than they answer.
“It’s a noble endeavor but also a difficult endeavor,” Andrew Rypel, a professor and fish ecologist at the University of California Davis, said of big summary statistics. “You want the number to be accurate but you’re also trying to distill down a lot of complicated data.” An added challenge, he said, is that there isn’t great data for a large number of species, including those that inhabit freshwater (where LPI registered some of the largest average declines).
This might all sound a bit … pedantic. Why are we fussing over how to measure biodiversity loss when the news is bad by any metric?
In the race to reverse wildlife declines, metrics matter. They help dictate how government officials, scientists, and environmental advocates divvy up a limited conservation budget. They can also inform public policy. Researchers used LPI, for example, to measure progress against several biodiversity conservation targets under a major UN convention.
There is more, though, that policy makers can mine from this data, and they could also highlight some of the better news.
The case for good news
Headline figures like the global LPI tend to obscure the fact that populations of plants and animals are changing in vastly different ways. On the whole, yes, those changes are negative and represent declines — and there’s some evidence that readers pay more attention to bad news. But many wildlife populations are stable or even increasing. In fact, half of all vertebrate populations in the report show an increasing trend.
WWF points this out plainly in the report. The number of loggerhead sea turtles nests increased by 500 percent in Chrysochou Bay, Cyprus, between 1999 and 2015, the group writes. That’s thanks to deliberate conservation activities such as relocating nests that were close to human developments.

Meanwhile, the report reveals that populations of mountain gorillas in Central Africa’s Virunga Mountains have grown from 480 individuals in 2010 to more than 600 today — again, thanks largely to conservation.
There are hundreds of examples like these (check out the Wildlife Comeback Report) and these are important stories to tell. People are tired of seeing the same negative figures that haven’t changed much in the last decade. “I feel the reticence of people to take in new information like this,” Shaw of WWF said. This data shows what’s working: that wildlife populations can recover, and that decades of conservation work haven’t been fruitless.
Indicators that clump populations together have value; they indicate, in simple terms, that ecosystems continue to trend in the wrong direction. And LPI is one of many featured in WWF’s report (there’s also metrics like “biodiver...

Cleveland enters the Week 6 NFL schedule with a 2-3 record, but its three losses have come by a combined six points. The Browns led the Chargers by 14 points in the first half last week before losing on a late field goal. They will try to bounce back when they host New England as 3-point favorites in the latest Week 6 NFL odds at Caesars Sportsbook. Meanwhile, Buffalo is a 2-point favorite at Kansas City in the Week 6 NFL spreads. The Bills and Chiefs each have one loss, so Sunday’s game could go a long way in determining the winner of the AFC. Which Week 6 NFL lines should you target with your Week 6 NFL bets? Before you make any Week 6 NFL picks or NFL parlays, be sure to see the NFL predictions and betting advice from SportsLine’s proven computer model.
The model, which simulates every NFL game 10,000 times, is up almost $7,000 for $100 players on top-rated NFL picks since its inception. The model enters Week 6 of the 2022 NFL season on an incredible 146-106 run on top-rated NFL picks that dates back to the 2017 season.
The model also ranked in the top 10 on NFLPickWatch four of the past six years on straight-up NFL picks and beat more than 94% of CBS Sports Football Pick’em players four times during that span. Anyone who has followed it is way up.
Now, the model has locked in five confident NFL best bets for Week 6. If you successfully parlay its picks, you’d be looking at a massive payout of around 25-1. You can only see the model’s Week 6 NFL picks at SportsLine.
Top Week 6 NFL picks
After simulating every game 10,000 times, the model is high on the New York Giants (+5.5) to cover against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. Baltimore has been one of the shakiest teams in the NFL over the past month, with its only solid performance coming against New England. The Ravens blew large leads against the Dolphins and Bills before sneaking past Cincinnati last week, failing to cover the 3-point spread.
New York has won four of its five games this season, including an impressive upset win at Green Bay as a 9-point underdog last week. Running back Saquon Barkley is off to an outstanding start, averaging 5.5 yards per carry on 97 attempts. Jones has been giving opposing teams problems throughout the year, rushing for 230 yards and two touchdowns.
Barkley is expected to account for more than 120 total yards on Sunday, while Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson is throwing an interception in the latest simulations. The model has the Giants covering this spread well over 50% of the time. See which other NFL parlay picks to make here.
How to make Week 6 NFL parlays
The model also jumped on four other NFL matchups where it says the line is way off, including backing a total that is off by a full touchdown. You can only see the model’s NFL Week 6 best bets and parlay at SportsLine.
What are the model’s top Week 6 NFL picks? And which other NFL matchups should you target for a strong 25-1 payout? Visit SportsLine now to see the Week 6 NFL best bets from a model on a 146-106 run on its top-rated picks, and find out.

Bitcoin’s Ongoing Sounds of Silence
By James Rubin
Equities

The Metaverse Struggles to Catch On
By Sam Reynolds

With flying cars, futuristic vehicles and interactive robots, this year’s edition has been a treat for all technology lovers

A slew of cool wearable tech is making a splash at Gitex Global this year. One of the largest technological exhibitions in the world, Gitex is spread over an area of 2 million sqm and has attracted over 5,000 companies from 90 countries.
Located at the futuristic e& stall in Zabeel Hall 6, one innovation consists of a set of VR glasses and a pair of robotic gloves. Upon wearing it, the user can begin seeing and feeling everything that is in the virtual reality.
Once they have work the gloves, the user is instructed to close and open their hands until they can begin sensing the virtual reality. Once that happens, they are ready to experience the wearable tech. From grabbing a coffee cup to picking up a ball to clicking a button, a lot is possible in the virtual world. Here is a demonstration on how it works:
Described as the future of technology, wearable gadgets have become increasingly popular among tech aficionados. Unlike the 2D images on a television or phone, tech like VR headsets have several sensors, with some devices even having a system for head tracking.
Another cool wearable tech on display at Gitex is the space simulating boots. Made with lightweight carbon fibre, the boots are fitted with various sensors and motors to allow its user to feel what it’s like to walk on space. With a green LED light running all around it, the boots will only work on the specially designed floor.
The clunky boots were initially designed as VR movement solutions that allow users to walk through metaverse and gaming platforms. Here is a video of a Gitex visitor testing out the boots:
With flying cars, futuristic vehicles and interactive robots, this year’s Gitex has been a treat for all technology lovers. The day before it began, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum had tweeted that since it began in 1981 the event “has put Dubai on the global technology map and put technology at the top of Dubai’s priorities.”

Devere CEO Expects Further Volatility In Crypto Market Before Year-End Says Savvy Investors Will Benefit From Panic Sellers Markets And Prices Bitcoin News Bitcoin News
Devere CEO Expects Further Volatility In Crypto Market Before Year-End — Says Savvy Investors Will Benefit From Panic Sellers – Markets And Prices Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/devere-ceo-expects-further-volatility-in-crypto-market-before-year-end-says-savvy-investors-will-benefit-from-panic-sellers-markets-and-prices-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/
The CEO of Devere Group, a financial advisory and asset management firm, anticipates further volatility in the crypto market before year-end. However, he stressed that “for serious investors, this will not necessarily be seen as a bad thing,” noting that “Savvy, long-term crypto investors will be looking to benefit from panic sellers by buying their digital currencies ‘on the cheap.’”
Devere CEO’s Crypto Outlook
The CEO of financial advisory and asset management firm Devere Group, Nigel Green, shared his view on the future outlook for bitcoin and ether Monday.
“Markets are now predicting that policymakers at major central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve and Bank of England, are likely to remain resolute in pumping up interest rates in their battle to beat down unexpectedly stubborn inflation,” he began. The executive added that the Fed has “maintained a hawkish theme that inflation remains far too high and they won’t put off raising rates.”
As higher interest rates typically lead to stock market declines, the Devere CEO noted:
Given bitcoin and ether’s current correlation with stock markets, we anticipate further, perhaps heightened, volatility in the crypto market before the end of 2022.
“However, for serious investors, this will not necessarily be seen as a bad thing,” he continued. “The major investors, including institutional ones, will treat it in the same way as turbulence in any other market.”
He explained that “Some of the world’s best investors consistently use market volatility as major buying opportunities in traditional financial markets — and the cryptocurrency market is now no different.” The Devere boss stressed, “When used effectively and efficiently, volatility can be an extremely powerful investment strategy.”
The Devere executive further pointed out that “Bitcoin remains the best-performing asset class in the world, and has consistently ranked amongst the best for both traditional and crypto investment sectors over the last few years.”
Noting that “Serious investors will not be spooked by further volatility,” Green concluded:
Savvy, long-term crypto investors will be looking to benefit from panic sellers by buying their digital currencies ‘on the cheap’ to enhance their investment portfolios.

TSMC secures one-year license from U.S. for China chip expansion, Nikkei reports
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. has secured a one-year license to keep ordering U.S. chipmaking equipment for its China expansion, Nikkei reported, citing sources.
The license from the U.S. government allows the company to continue shipping equipment to its plan in Nanjing, China, and serves as a temporary waiver from the latest sweeping rules announced by the U.S. The controls are aimed at preventing China from obtaining or manufacturing key chips and components for supercomputers.
TSMC declined to comment to Nikkei.
This comes after South Korea’s SK Hynix on Wednesday announced that it had received a one-year exemption from the U.S. government.

UV Enterprise, the hospitality industry’s first official Property Experience Management System (PXMS), is a full-stack technology platform that provides hospitality leaders the ability to sell, yield, and operate on-property experiences.
10.12.2022
UrVenue is pleased to announce the launch of UV Enterprise, the next generation of its platform to monetize and manage experience-based inventory across an entire property. Just like a property-management system (PMS) which manages an entire property’s room inventory, UV Enterprise, the hospitality industry’s first official Property Experience Management System (PXMS), is a full-stack technology platform that provides hospitality leaders the ability to sell, yield, and operate on-property experiences.
In a 2021 study with YouGov, 85% of luxury leisure travelers said they would book additional experiences in advance with a single shopping cart experience. UrVenue solves this growing need by enabling guests to book all available experiences throughout the resort and throughout their stay in a single, unified booking cart and empowering hospitality operators to manage all outlet inventory and service all guests in a single platform.
“After more than two years of evolving our industry-leading venue management system, we are very proud to be the pioneers of hospitality’s first PXMS,” said Deron Pearson, CEO of UrVenue. “We believe UV Enterprise is a game changer, fully capable of standing alone as its own hotel technology classification. Managing each experience on a different, siloed system is a real pain point for resort operations and their customers. UV Enterprise manages them all in one place, making the PXMS an integral part of resort operations, just like the PMS.”
UV Enterprise has four core capabilities:
Commerce: Monetize experience-based inventory with a robust booking and ticketing solution that upsells, cross-sells, and packages live inventory
Operations: Streamline property-wide operations, boost team productivity, centralize guest data, and elevate the guest experience.
Insights: Leverage an analytics layer across the entire enterprise to provide commerce and operations insights for every team.
Knowledge Management: Ensure every system, team, guest touchpoint and third party can securely access vital enterprise data in real-time with unparalleled accuracy.
UV Enterprise also includes multiple new and advanced features:
Itinerary Builder: Delight guests with the ability to book every experience under one roof in a unified booking cart and empower employees to book the same experiences on behalf of guests in the guest services dashboard
Interactive 3D Seating Maps: Inspire guests with detailed renderings of venues and empower them to choose the exact location of their VIP table or cabana
Distribution Channels: Target guest segments with customized pricing and inventory and manage distribution channels, including 3rd party resellers, with ease
Revenue Management: Yield prices, daypart inventory, and segment customers with robust, automated tools
Comprehensive Payment Methods: Employ a variety of payment options tailored to your experience – reservations, secured reservations, deposits, food and beverage minimums, or full pre-payments
Partner Integrations: Connect the dots between all key guest touchpoints with 30+ integrations with POS, PMS, payment, and other best-in-class partners
Founded in 2011, UrVenue is a dominant presence on the Las Vegas Strip and has expanded to service more than 250 clients in 15 countries. It is specifically built for experience-based inventory found within a resort or mixed-use environments – nightclubs, dayclubs, pools, restaurants, sportsbooks, lounges, shows, recreation, activities, and more. Prior to its official launch, UV Enterprise has been piloted by Las Vegas’ and the world’s largest integrated resorts.

Former Police Officer Charged With Shooting Teenager On Bail In US Texas – China.org.cn https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/former-police-officer-charged-with-shooting-teenager-on-bail-in-us-texas-china-org-cn/
A former police officer on charge of shooting a 17-year-old who was eating at a McDonald’s parking lot in San Antonio of the U.S. state of Texas was released on bond on Wednesday, authorities said.
James Brennand was arrested on Tuesday night and charged with two counts of aggravated assault by a public servant, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office. He was released after posting 100,000-U.S.-dollar bond for each count.
The victim, identified as Erik Cantu, has been in critical condition after being shot multiple times on Oct. 2 by Brennand, a probationary officer with seven months of experience responding to an unrelated disturbance call at the time. Brennand has since been fired.
Cantu was on life support and non-responsive, Cantu’s family said on Tuesday in a statement released to local media outlets.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said on Tuesday that the charges would change if Cantu succumbs to his injuries.
“It was unjustified, both administratively and criminally,” McManus told reporters.
The charges and arrest came within hours of a protest held in front of San Antonio Police Department’s headquarters demanding Brennand’s arrest on Tuesday.
A pre-hearing is set for Nov. 23, according to Bexar County Jail records.
Cruising Emerges As The Top Family Travel Trend For Indians In 2023 Travel Daily
Cruising Emerges As The Top Family Travel Trend For Indians In 2023 – Travel Daily https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/cruising-emerges-as-the-top-family-travel-trend-for-indians-in-2023-travel-daily/
The top travel trends that emerged from the August 2022 study include that 8 in 10 urban Indian families who are planning to travel internationally are considering a cruise holiday in the next 12 months. 79% of Indians want to vacation with their families and 89% believe it is very important to spend quality time with family for an overall sense of wellbeing. The survey was conducted in August 2022 by Hansa Research on behalf of Norwegian Cruise Line.
Family travel goals have taken on an all-new meaning, with Indian families seeking to make up for lost time with new and exciting experiences to strengthen their bond and enjoy each other’s company. The importance of close community and family bonds has emerged as vital to maintaining a sense of wellbeing among Indians, according to a recent survey conducted by Hansa Research on behalf of Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL), the leading innovator in global cruise travel.
Around 78% of respondents said that their vacation goal was to travel to create memories with their loved ones, while 65% said they travel to visit different places and experience something new. Families, particularly those with younger children under 15 years of age, believe that kid-friendly holiday options and dining choices are very important when considering holiday choices.
The study further added that when travelling with family, 69% of Indian travellers said value and inclusive pricing was a very important consideration while 61% feel that easy access to attractions and activities was important.
It’s no surprise that cruise holidays are top of mind for Indian families seeking to reconnect, since cruising offers the ultimate way to travel together. They can easily visit multiple destinations while unpacking just once, and cruising caters to many different types of travellers with varied entertainment, dining and accommodation options. In addition, a cruise holiday promotes a sense of peace, wellbeing and worry-free travel with everything taken care of from the moment guests step aboard.
“It’s really exciting to see such a significant number of Indian travellers have shown a desire to take a cruise vacation so that they can spend quality time with their loved ones”, said Manoj Singh, country head india at NCL. “The thrill of exploring multiple destinations in one vacation with ease has led to families fulfilling their travel goals at sea. GUADALUPE, Calif. – An effort to bring tourists and diners to Guadalupe is underway.
El Tapatio is cooking for new customers, all thanks to the second annual ‘Taste of Guadalupe.’
“How I see it is like a trick-or-treating for adults, where you just go to all the restaurants listed here,” said Noemi Berumen, owner of El Tapatio.
She said they participated last year, and it helped her business.
“Then that friend becomes our regular, then brings their other friends,” said Berumen. “So we get pretty busy, and I say a lot is due to the taste of Guadalupe.”
The Guadalupe Business Association says the goal is to bring more foot traffic into the city while also boosting the economy.
Participants can pick a special passport at any of the 16 participating restaurants.
When you go to one of the restaurants– you can get the passport stamped… and then have a chance to win prizes like a flat-screen tv.
“This year, if you have eight stamps, you get one entry; 12, you get two entries into the drawing, and three for all 16 stamps,” said Garret Matsuura, president of the Guadalupe Business Association.
The restaurant owner of El Tapatio says no purchase is necessary to participate in “a taste of guadalupe.” However, they said when customers come in, they can’t resist the smell of their food.
“We’re excited about this year because it is now who else we will meet,” said Berumen. “Who else hasn’t seen me participate in a long time and get to say hello to them.”
Berumen hopes this contest continues every year, all to cook for new and old faces.
“It’s really nice to get Guadalupe out there on the map,” said the restaurant owner.
The last day to enter the contest is October 31st.

Modifying Screen And Sleep Time For Optimal Living Businessday
Modifying Screen And Sleep Time For Optimal Living – Businessday https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/modifying-screen-and-sleep-time-for-optimal-living-businessday/
After a long day at work, you felt that you needed that good 8-hour sleep. Plopping down on your bed, you hurriedly say your night prayers and close your eyes. Then, you hear that familiar notification sound. You picked up your phone, replied to about four to five messages, and before you knew it, you had already spent more than 2 hours on your screen.
Now, you need to wake up by 6am the next morning or you would be late for work. You are left with the option of sleeping for a few hours, and you eventually wake up feeling groggy, tired, and irritated. Sounds familiar, right?
It is an indisputable fact that sleep is important for a healthy lifestyle. Despite that, many people still struggle to get the recommended 8-hour sleep at night. This can be attributed to a wide range of factors, and excessive screen time is not excluded from the list. This article discusses how an excess of screen time can disrupt a person’s sleep, the implications, and how screen and sleep time can be modified for optimal living.
We live in a world that is increasingly dependent on technology. Hence, smartphones, computers, and other electronic devices play a huge role in how we work, play, and communicate. However, these devices emit blue light or High Energy Visible (HEV) light, a colour in the natural electromagnetic energy spectrum that can be seen by the human eye.
This blue light from screens suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone that controls the sleep-wake cycle. The production of melatonin is often triggered by darkness, so the light from your screens tricks your brain into thinking it is time to wake up when you are supposed to sleep, increasing your general alertness.
Blue light emission from screens does not only suppress the production of melatonin and increase your alertness at the wrong time, but it also affects your natural body circadian rhythm.
Your circadian rhythm is a 24-hour cycle that helps your body naturally operate on a healthy sleep-wake schedule. This means that during the day, your body produces cortisol, the hormone that helps you stay awake and alert, and at night, your body produces melatonin, the hormone that helps you sleep. Exposure to blue light at night can affect the body’s circadian rhythm, as well as delay good sleep.
Now, the sad truth is that having one’s sleep disrupted due to an excess of screen time does more than make one feel irritated, groggy, and grumpy all day. The prolonged effects of sleep deprivation are real and alarming.
To begin with, sleep deprivation drains a person’s mental ability. It worsens symptoms of mental conditions like anxiety and depression. Not only that, it slows the learning process.
During sleep, the brain forms new cells that help the processing and retention of new information, and little or no sleep hinders the formation of these cells. There is also trouble with concentration because of the inability to focus well. This can make it quite difficult to pick up information and can also be detrimental to a person’s creative and problem-solving skills.
Read also: Sleeping well to live well
Additionally, having little or no sleep time can endanger a person’s physical health. Because the body needs sleep to produce certain antibodies to fight infectious diseases, lack of sleep weakens the immune system and makes the body prone to all sorts of diseases. Also, sleep deprivation may lead to increased blood pressure and higher levels of chemicals linked to inflammation, both of which can cause heart disease.
Moreso, having little or no sleep delays the body’s release of insulin, the hormone responsible for blood sugar regulation. This makes people who are sleep-deprived susceptible to higher blood sugar levels, making them prone to diabetes.
It is also important to note that sleep distortion can as well affect a person’s balance and coordination, increasing the risks of falls, physical accidents, and in severe cases, car accidents.
From the aforementioned, it is apparent that an uncoordinated use of devices can disrupt one’s sleep, and the implications of sleep deprivation are dire. Now that you know how dangerous it is to use electronic gadgets before bed, it is advisable to avoid them for at least 30 minutes before sleep.
In rare cases, where you need to use your phones, laptops, or computers at night, you can make use of blue blocker glasses, which are specially designed to protect your eyes from blue light emissions.
Also, most electrical gadgets are now equipped with a “night-time mode” or a “warm-light” feature that reduces blue light emission. It is advisable to adjust your phone display settings to this feature if you need to use your device at night.
Thus, there is no gainsaying that screen time before bed could disrupt sleep which could be detrimental to one’s health and work-life productivity. It also delays the natural body circadian rhythm; suppresses the production of melatonin and hinders getting to bed on time.
Therefore, for you to get a full 8 hours of sleep and maintain a healthy sleep habit, limit your exposure to blue light at night, invest in blue blocker glasses, or better still, turn off your screens right before you sleep.

Editors Picks: Best Of Fall Baking Steals & Hacks 22 Words
Editor’s Picks: Best Of Fall Baking Steals & Hacks – 22 Words https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/editors-picks-best-of-fall-baking-steals-hacks-22-words/
The fall equinox kicks off a busy holiday baking season for me. I’m always on the lookout for baking deals, new holiday foods, and the latest kitchen gadgets. As my husband knows all too well, it takes a lot of supplies to tackle the holiday recipes I’ve eyeballed for months. I spend months leading up to fall searching for the best fall baking hacks and deals.
Yes, I may have a problem with fall baking finds. It’s not really my fault—I just can’t help but love all the food possibilities that holidays bring. For me, homemade food on the holidays means joy. I just want to spread some seasonal cheer! The good news is, I’m not keeping the cheer to myself. I’m letting you in on some of my favorite fall baking mixes and tools. These are the Halloween and Thanksgiving must-haves I always keep in my kitchen.
Whip Up Perfect Fall Cakelets
Did you know that the more beautiful food looks, the more likely you are to enjoy it? I bought this adorable baking pan that turns out acorns, pumpkins, and leaves because I wanted to bring new life to one of my favorite fall baking recipes. Pro tip: always coat baking molds with non-stick spray before using.
Pretty Up Cupcakes with Glittering Pumpkin Toppers
I wasn’t joking about how much appearance matters when I’m doing holiday baking. I’m a little bit picky, and I want all of the holiday food that leaves my kitchen to look amazing. When I’m short on time, I turn to easy décor like these pumpkin cupcake toppers. They’re pretty and easy to use.
Taste the Colors of Fall Leaves
Everyone loves the glorious red-and-orange palette of fall leaves, but it’s one of the hardest color schemes to pull off on a cake. Trust me, I’ve tried many times and failed. My “fall colors theme” always ends up looking more like a big fat mud puddle. This year I’ll be opting for edible fall leaf cake decorations instead. They are b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l.
Make a Chicken Separate Your Eggs
Some of my favorite fall recipes call for egg yolks or whites that have been separated. I always painstakingly separated the yolk from the white using two dishes. That was a waste of time. I recently found this amazing chicken that separates eggs with no mess. It’s a must-have for anyone who loves baking.
Beat It with a Ball Whisk
Years ago, I tried making whipped cream by hand with a whisk. It was so hard that I wondered how fancy French pastry chefs in the 18th century made it at all. I found this ball whisk when I was looking for baking deals, and now I know. It has changed my life. It works perfectly and takes up so much less space than a traditional whisk.
Mold Some Festive Pocket Pies
One of my favorite holiday baking hacks is to make pocket pies, aka hand pies, instead of full-size pies. They’re easier to serve at a party or bring along on a trip to the apple orchard. I love these fall pocket pie molds because they make even the most basic pumpkin hand pies look festive and fun.
Pop It Out with a Pumpkin Mold
I love watching fall baking shows and stealing cool techniques from the pros. That’s how I learned that I could shape festive mousses, cheesecakes, and more with silicone molds. This mold makes perfectly shaped pumpkin confections. Hot chocolate bombs are one of my favorite fall foods to make in these molds.
Create a Cookie Cutter Holiday
For me, it just isn’t a holiday if I haven’t decorated a ton of sugar cookies. I recently upgraded to these stainless steel fall cookie cutters for more fun options. Fun tip: Instead of topping your apple pie with a traditional lattice crust, use crust cutouts made with these cookie cutters to create a fun design.
Make Delicious Gingerbread People, Fast
I’m a big fan of homemade. After all, almost everything tastes better when you make it from scratch. Gingerbread is one of my big exceptions to this rule. I started using this gingerbread mix because it’s a quick option on a busy day. Now I use it anytime I want to make gingerbread. It’s fast, more affordable than from-scratch, and every bit as good as a homemade batch of ginger people.
Pick Up a Pumpkin Mix
If it feels like fall outside, it feels like pumpkin bread time to me. Nothing goes together better than a fall celebration and baked goods flavored with pumpkin. I keep a few boxes of this pumpkin bread and muffin mix on hand. This is a go-to for me whenever I have a pumpkin craving or invite friends over in the fall.
Plate Up Some Pumpkin Spice Pancakes
Pumpkin spice is a fall force to be reckoned with. Half of the new fall products I see in the food and home aisles boast this signature autumn spice. No matter how many new candies or baking recipes I see with pumpkin spice, classic pumpkin spice pancakes will always be my favorite. I love serving a platter of these pancakes with whipped cream and maple syrup for topping.
Pour On Genuine Maple Syrup
Maple is a classic holiday flavor that features in everything from baked goods to roast meats. The trick to getting the best maple flavor in your fall baking is to use real maple syrup. Tip: Maple syrup is a perishable food product and will mold over time. It should be stored in your fridge after opening.
Get a Unique Taste with Pecan Butter
When I see unique nut butters in grocery ads, I can’t help but try them. This pecan butter is one of my favorite baking ideas so far. A little bit of pecan butter goes a long way and adds a ton of flavor to baking recipes that call for peanut or almond butter.
Accent Your Kitchen with Fall Towels
My kitchen sees a lot of traffic. I want it to look festive for Halloween and Thanksgiving, but it’s not the easiest room to decorate. Instead of trying to shove more décor onto my countertops, I opt for fall kitchen towels that bring a festive burst of autumn color to my space.
Break Out the Holiday Bundt Pan
Have you ever noticed how many holiday recipes are for bundt cakes? They’re generally easy to make, tasty, and perfect for serving a crowd. Honestly, though, bundts can be pretty boring too. This holiday, mix up your dessert table with a cake made in this harvest leaves bundt pan instead.
Get Decked Out in a Holiday Apron
More than a few of my nice cold-weather shirts have gotten stained in the kitchen. This holiday season, I’m protecting my shirts with a pretty fall apron. I’ve purchased this apron in a few different prints so I always have one on hand.
Drench Your World in Caramel
Look, this block of caramel is no joke. Weighing in at 5 pounds, it’s a holiday heavyweight and a real baking deal. Try one of my fall favorites by dipping marshmallows in caramel and rolling them in sprinkles. Pro tip: Use a mini slow cooker or fondue pot to melt caramel for dipping.
Give Joy with a Candy Apple Packaging Set
My dentist might not approve, but I still love indulging in caramel and candy apples. The only thing better than eating this delicious holiday food is giving one to a friend. This candy apple gift set makes it easier to give my candy apple creations to others without making a sticky mess.
Cut Clean-Up Time with Food-Safe Silicone Mats
If you like cleaning up after a long day of holiday baking, you’re not from this planet. I hate scrubbing cookies off baking pans most of all. It takes too much time and patience, but parchment paper for every batch of cookies gets expensive too. The answer? Food-safe silicone mats. I’m never going back to scrubbing.
Protect Yourself with Mini Oven Mitts
Until I found these mini oven mitts, I’d never met an oven mitt I liked. Most are way too big for my small hands and end up gathering dust. These miniature mitts protect my hands without getting in the way of my holiday baking.
Whip Up a Pie Crust in Double Time
Who else dreams of flaky pie crusts bursting with fall fruits? I know I’m not the only one! I love making my pie dreams come true with the help of this pie crust mix. It’s a great timesaver when I feel like I’m falling behind on my fall baking.
Make That Pecan Pie Without a Fuss
Pecans are right up there with chestnuts when it comes to classic holiday nuts. My Thanksgiving spread always includes a delectable pecan pie. This pecan pie in a jar is one of my favorite holiday deals because the only other ingredients I need to make a pie are a crust and some eggs.

Ukraine Will Push To Reclaim More Territory Through Winter U.S. Defense Chief Says The New York Times
Ukraine Will Push To Reclaim More Territory Through Winter, U.S. Defense Chief Says – The New York Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/ukraine-will-push-to-reclaim-more-territory-through-winter-u-s-defense-chief-says-the-new-york-times/
KYIV, Ukraine — Six and a half feet down a ladder inside a small shed at the back of Oleksandr Kadet’s home is an underground room with a cement hatch that he hopes he never has to use.
For the past two weeks, Mr. Kadet, 32, said that he and his wife, who live outside the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, had been preparing for the possibility of a nuclear attack by stocking the room — an old well that they converted into a bunker — with bottled water, canned food, radios and power banks.
“We are more anxious now, especially after yesterday’s attacks,” Mr. Kadet said on Tuesday, a day after a series of Russian missile attacks across Ukraine. “But we do think that in case of a nuclear explosion, we will be able to survive if we stay in the shelter for some time.”
The fears of escalation rose on Saturday after an attack on the 12-mile Kerch Strait Bridge connecting Russia to the Crimean Peninsula, which Moscow annexed in 2014. Initially, Ukrainians celebrated, but that quickly gave way to worry that such a brazen assault on a symbol of President Vladimir V. Putin’s rule could prompt a severe retaliation.
Even before these recent events, though, concerns about the potential for a nuclear disaster had increasingly been making their way into Ukraine’s national psyche. The fear is that Russia could either use tactical nuclear arms or launch a conventional attack on one of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants.
U.S. officials have said they think the chances of Russia’s using nuclear weapons are low, and senior American officials say they have seen no evidence that Mr. Putin is moving any of his nuclear assets.
On Sunday, Mr. Putin called the assault on the bridge a “terrorist attack aimed at destroying the critically important civilian infrastructure of the Russian Federation.”
But his spokesman, Dmitri S. Peskov, appeared to tamp down fears of a nuclear reprisal, saying that the attack on the bridge did not fall within the category under Russia’s defense doctrine that allowed for such a response.
Last month, Mr. Putin raised fears that he could resort to nuclear weapons when he warned that he would “use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people,” if Russian-controlled territory was threatened.
“This is not a bluff,” he said.
Days later, Russia illegally annexed four Ukrainian territories.
Mr. Kadet, who noted that he had begun preparing two weeks ago, said it felt better to have an action plan.
“It’s psychologically easier because you know you are at least somehow prepared for it,” he said. “It’s not a guarantee it will save you, but at least you’re ready.”
Residents of Kyiv said that they had felt wary even before the most recent missile strikes there on Monday.
Immediately after the bridge attack, many Ukrainians had shared their glee on social media. They toasted triumphantly in the capital’s bars over the weekend, and posed for selfies in front of posters of the burning bridge.
But the worry soon set in.
“I feel this real fear about how the Russians will answer this,” said Krystina Gevorkova, 30, who was shopping with her friend in Kyiv on Sunday. “Earlier it had felt safer here,” she added. “Now, I have this feeling like something is going to happen.”
Kyiv has for months been spared the worst of the Russian onslaught while Moscow focused its attention instead on southeastern Ukraine. But on Monday, a Russian missile struck just blocks away from where Ms. Gevorkova had spoken.
She said that she had been reading up on how to stay safe during a nuclear war, but that she was skeptical that it would help.
“We can’t really do anything,” she said.
The war has felt far from Kyiv in recent months, as life’s rhythms return to a semblance of normalcy after Russian forces were ousted from parts of northeastern Ukraine. Nevertheless, the city has also been slowly preparing for a potential nuclear attack.
The Kyiv City Council said on Friday that potassium iodide pills would be distributed to residents in case of a nuclear incident “based on medical recommendations,” adding that the pills were also available in city pharmacies.
Potassium iodide is used to saturate a person’s thyroid with iodine so that radioactive iodine inhaled or ingested after exposure will not be retained by the gland.
Alina Bozhedomova, 23, a pharmacist in Kyiv, said that customers were coming in daily looking for the pills, but added, “I haven’t seen people panicking about it.”
Some elementary schools have advised parents to prepare emergency packs for their children to keep with them at school.
Nadiia Stelmakh, 50, who works in a market selling home goods, said that one mother had come to her with a list from the school that included latex gloves, a poncho, boot covers, tissues, wet wipes and a flashlight.
“People are really concerned right now,” she said. Her husband, Volodymyr Stelmakh, who has another stall nearby, agreed.
“I have an emergency bag packed,” he said, “but I think if the nuclear threat is imminent, you will have no time to run away.
After worries grew about the security of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in the country’s southeast in recent weeks, Ukraine’s Ministry of Health issued guidance about how to respond to a nuclear incident.
The risk of nuclear fallout can feel very real in Ukraine, a country that still bears the scars of the Chernobyl accident in 1986, one of the worst nuclear disasters in history. Chernobyl is only about 60 miles north of Kyiv.
And some who experienced the life-threatening fallout firsthand say that they, possibly more than anyone, understand the full risk of nuclear exposure. Oleksandr, 55, who asked that his last name not be used, said that he and his family had fled Chernobyl for Kyiv immediately after the meltdown, when he was just 18.
His family closely followed guidance to move south, as winds were pushing radioactive materials north, and he said that was the only reason they escaped unscathed.
“Now, people here are really not ready. People don’t know what to do,” he said. “There is not enough information.”
He owns a market stand that sells household necessities and said that more people had come in during the past two weeks preparing for a nuclear disaster, buying flashlights, batteries, knives, radios and small camp stoves.
While some were preparing for the worst, others remained optimistic that Russia would never carry out such an extreme attack, which would draw international outrage.
Dmytro Yastrub, 31, said he felt more concerned about Mr. Putin using conventional weapons to target Kyiv.
“I presume something will happen” after the bridge attack, he said, standing outside a bar in the Kyiv city center on Sunday evening with a group of friends. But, he added, the risk of a nuclear attack was not weighing heavy on his mind.
Svetlana Zozulia, 47, and her husband, Vladyslav Zozulia, 37, were walking in central Kyiv with their daughter, Anastasiia, 11, on Sunday night. Ms. Zozulia said she tried to remain optimistic and did not believe that Mr. Putin would launch a nuclear attack on Ukraine.
But she did buy potassium iodide tablets just in case, she said.
“I think our success disturbs him,” Ms. Zozulia said. “But there is also a threat for him if he chooses a nuclear attack.”

NASA Suggests New Space Cooling Technology Could Charge Electric Cars In 5 Minutes KRQE News 13
NASA Suggests New Space Cooling Technology Could Charge Electric Cars In 5 Minutes – KRQE News 13 https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nasa-suggests-new-space-cooling-technology-could-charge-electric-cars-in-5-minutes-krqe-news-13/
(The Hill) – NASA has suggested an experimental cooling system it is funding could ultimately allow electric vehicle users to charge their cars within five minutes.
The agency said a team led by a Purdue University professor has developed the “subcooled flow boiling” technology for experimentation, with the hope it can control future systems’ temperatures in space.
“A team sponsored by NASA’s Biological and Physical Sciences Division is developing a new technology that will not only achieve orders-of-magnitude improvement in heat transfer to enable these systems to maintain proper temperatures in space, but will also enable significant reductions in size and weight of the hardware,” NASA said in a blog post last week.
“What’s more, this same technology may make owning an electric-powered car here on Earth easier and more feasible,” the post continued.
NASA indicated achieving such a feat of charging electric vehicles within five minutes would require chargers to provide current at 1,400 amperes, far higher than currently available technology.
Most chargers currently available support currents less than 150 amperes, while some of the most advanced chargers on the market deliver currents up to 520 amperes, the post noted.
But NASA said Purdue University’s developmental cable can provide currents of up to 2,400 amperes by removing heat through the new technology, which would deliver charging at 4.6 times the rate of the fastest charger currently available.
“Application of this new technology resulted in unprecedented reduction of the time required to charge a vehicle and may remove one of the key barriers to worldwide adoption of electric vehicles,” NASA wrote.
President Biden has emphasized a shift to electric vehicles as a significant component of his climate initiatives, but the proposals have been met with criticism among some in the GOP, who have portrayed the plans as elitist and boons for the rich.
Questions have also been raised about whether the U.S. electrical grid could even handle a hard shift toward EVs.
The Inflation Reduction Act, a party-line reconciliation package passed over the summer, includes billions in funding for electric-vehicle tax credits and other financial incentives.
It also includes a $7.5 billion investment to build a network of charging stations across the U.S.
“The great American road trip is going to be fully electrified,” Biden said in Detroit last month. “Whether you’re driving coast to coast along I-10 or on I-75 here in Michigan, charging stations will be up and easy to find as gas stations are now.”
US Treasury Inspector General To Probe Florida Migrant Flights NBC 6 South Florida
US Treasury Inspector General To Probe Florida Migrant Flights – NBC 6 South Florida https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/us-treasury-inspector-general-to-probe-florida-migrant-flights-nbc-6-south-florida/
The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Inspector General will look into whether the state of Florida misused federal tax dollars when it moved 48 recent migrants from Texas to Massachusetts in September. A spokeswoman for Governor Ron DeSantis’s administration tells NBC 6 they were permitted to use the money for the program and the probe by the OIG is typical as part of its responsibilities.
Earlier this year, Florida lawmakers approved $12 million “to facilitate the transport of unauthorized aliens from this state (Florida).” The money came from interest collected from the State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund, federal money sent to the state to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a letter obtained by NBC 6 responding to U.S. Senator Ed Markey and five members of the Massachusetts delegation to Congress, the Deputy Inspector General for the U.S. Treasury Department Richard Delmar confirmed the probe.
First page of letter confirming probe
Delmar wrote the Treasury Inspector General “has audit work planned” and “already sought information from Florida about appropriate use of that fund.” He wrote they are looking for a more detailed analysis and will review whether there are limitations and conditions on the federal money related to “immigration activities.”
“We plan to get this work underway as quickly as possible, consistent with meeting our other oversight mandates and priorities, both in pandemic recovery programs as well as the other Treasury programs and operations for which we have responsibility,” Delmar wrote.
Massachusetts leaders in Congress sent a letter on September 16 to the U.S. Treasury Office of Inspector General requesting the review to determine if the Florida program misused taxpayer money meant for pandemic relief.
Local
“I hope that this investigation sheds light on whether Governor DeSantis misused funds that were intended for COVID relief for Floridians,” Sen. Ed Markey, D–MA, wrote in a statement to NBC 6.
Documents revealed new details on how Florida paid to fly migrants from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard. NBC 6’s Phil Prazan reports
Wednesday afternoon, DeSantis communications director Taryn Fenske wrote NBC 6 the state had been in communication with the OIG for weeks about using interest on federal dollars to move immigrants to “sanctuary jurisdictions.”
Fenske wrote reporters using the interest was allowed under specific program’s requirements and rules.
“Reviews by Treasury are typical and, as stated by the OIG, are ‘part of its oversight responsibilities,” wrote Fenske.
Reached by email Deputy Inspector General Delmar had no other comment besides what he wrote in the letter.
NBC 6 Investigators reported earlier how the program may have violated state law and contracting guidelines. Both the law approved by lawmakers and FDOT guidelines sent to the contractor noted the migrants must be moved from within the state of Florida and must be unauthorized aliens. The migrants were found in Texas. The lawyers for the migrants argued in court filings and statements they are authorized because many are seeking asylum under federal law.
At several press conferences last month, Governor DeSantis defended the program and said the flights would continue as a response to the Biden Administration reversing the “remain in Mexico” policy and moving migrants around the country earlier this year.
“No one really cared about that on the national media perspective until fifty show up in Martha’s Vineyard,” Gov. DeSantis said. “You have to ask yourself on this, why is that such a big deal but it wasn’t a big deal when some fifty migrants died in some shed in Texas.”
NBC 6’s Julia Bagg has more on the sheriff from Texas and his decision to investigate the controversial flights from last week.
The governor claimed many of the migrants may not qualify for asylum and they’re using that as an excuse to stay in the United States.
“There’s a whole cottage industry of people claiming asylum. Most of these people clearly do not qualify for asylum. So that is being abused,” DeSantis said.
The governor’s office wouldn’t comment on what the criteria was to select the group of migrants. Records released through public records requests indicate the contractor Vertol System was responsible for recruiting the migrants.
NBC 6 has made multiple attempts to reach out to the company and its CEO, but we have not received any response.
Delmar said the department is also monitoring legislative and judicial challenges to the program which may impact their review, according to the letter. A Florida state senator has challenged the program in court and the Bexar County Sheriff in Texas has launched an investigation into the Florida program.
The Ultimate Local’s Guide To Oaxaca – Thrillist https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/the-ultimate-locals-guide-to-oaxaca-thrillist/
The only complaint one might hear about visiting the southwestern Mexican state of Oaxaca is that there are too many things to eat, drink, see, and do—a seemingly impossible amount of worthwhile activities to conquer in a single excursion. Oaxaca offers landscapes that transform from pristine, fine-sand beaches to craggy mountain ranges to vibrant city centers. This region is to thank not just for introducing the rest of the world to mezcal, a spirit that’s distilled from the revered agave plant, with ancestral recipes passed down from generation to generation, but for rich culinary and artistic traditions that have also proliferated the globe.
But the true heart of Oaxaca is its people. Along with the Yucatán, the state boasts one of Mexico’s largest Indigenous populations, with Zapotecs, Mixtecs, Mixe, and Mazatecos representing a few significant groups. The Zapotecs in particular do not have a migration story and have called the state home for thousands of years, long before borders intersected it—it’s not uncommon to hear the language spoken in rural areas outside of Oaxaca City and you can visit the ancient Zapotec city of Monte Albán, which was founded around 500 BC and is one of the oldest cities in Mesoamerica.
Yet as the state explodes in popularity, many Indigenous Oaxacans are being cut out of the picture. According to Ivan Vasquez, a Oaxaca native who visits often to source items for his Oaxacan restaurants in Los Angeles, many local Oaxacans are being priced out of the region.
“Oaxaca is booming right now,” he says, “Which is great for local businesses, but also, many of those new businesses are not Oaxacan-owned. Local Oaxacan merchants aren’t able to afford rent anymore because people with money are coming from different Mexican states or outside of Mexico and taking over.”
Zapotec tour guide Lily Santos agrees, saying, “Gentrification is definitely happening. Oaxaca is one of the main states that migrates to the US, and it’s because they don’t have access to resources to make the life they want here. The money that tourists are spending is often not going to support local Oaxaqueños.”
The Oaxacan-owned businesses that Vasquez and Santos are referring to often lack resources that would help international tourists discover them, like English websites or social media accounts. Many English-speaking tourists don’t make attempts at other languages, which can alienate business owners who only speak Spanish or an even lesser-known Indigenous dialect. Such businesses tend to exist through word of mouth, which can be a hurdle when attracting new customers, but makes the eventual experience all the more special—if you can find it.
From annual Guelaguetza festivities to Día de los Muertos and colorful holiday displays, Oaxaca stands out as a tempting destination regardless of the time of year. It might take a little more effort to create an inclusive itinerary that uplifts local communities, but we promise it’s worth it. And thankfully, we’ve got tips from Santos and Vasquez to help you plan the ultimate trip.
Stay in homey accommodations
One of your best bets for a real cultural exchange is to stay with an Oaxacan family, or at the very least privately renting a true Oaxacan home. You’ll find plenty of shared and private accommodation options on Airbnb—the trick is to find the ones actually owned by locals.
Santos suggests, beyond perusing the pictures, to look at the host profile. “There, you can see if the listing is managed by a leasing agency, how many rentals they have, and often they’ll tell you a little bit about themselves,” she advises. “A lot of Oaxacans have started identifying themselves on their profiles, saying ‘rented by a local,’ ‘family-owned,’ ‘Indigenous,’ or ‘Familia Oaxaqueño.’ It takes an extra step, but that’s how you start to become more intentional about the way you travel.”
You can also stay at Santos’ family ranch in Tlacolula, which can accommodate up to eight guests and acts as the perfect gateway for exploring the town’s famous Sunday market.
Shop locally in markets and on guided tours
Vasquez’s number one travel recommendation for tourists heading to Oaxaca?
“Get outside of Oaxaca City,” he commands. “The city is beautiful, but if you want to learn about Oaxacan culture, go to different municipalities and communities where you can buy local textiles from local people.”
He suggests Tlacolula’s Sunday market or Teotitlan del Valle as starting points, but finding a trustworthy tour guide like Santos can also help ensure that textile artisans and gallery owners get a fair cut when selling their wares.
“Most guides and travel agencies are working in this hush-hush system of 30–50% commission,” Santos shares. “If you buy a rug, it may be 10,000 pesos, but half of that is going to the guide. For me, my priority is bringing income and tourism to different communities and small businesses. It’s why I don’t take a commission and why I’m committed to working only with Indigenous-owned businesses. In each community, I work with about five to seven businesses on a rotating basis.”
Santos offers an array of experiences based on travelers’ interests and that change depending
on the time of year—for example, she’s currently gearing up for Lanii Tu’Guul, a Zapotec celebration of the dead that overlaps with Día de los Muertos.
You may notice popular sites like Hierve el Agua missing from Santos’ tour options—that’s by design. While she’s beginning to explore options for visiting the famous petrified waterfall rock formation with mineral pools, she’s mindful of creating an itinerary that supports the two local Indigenous communities that call the landmark home and often have to work outside of the area in order to make ends meet. “I will be taking people there very slowly and only if they will email me with intention,” she clarifies.
If you do decide to venture out on your own, taking the extra step to be a responsible traveler can add up to a lot of support for the local community. For example, avoid haggling at the markets—even if you see locals engaging in the practice.
“A lot of people have this perception—not only in Oaxaca, but when they visit Mexico in general—that they get to ask for a discount just because they’re tourists,” Vasquez explains. “It’s important to remember: you are a guest on our lands. Paying the asking price is a way of respecting our cultures and the traditions that these families have preserved for generations and centuries.”
He continues, saying, “A lot of these business owners, they might not have the financial education that we do. They might see this business as their only resource to survive, pay expenses, and make a living. That’s where they get intimidated sometimes, where if someone asks for a discount, they’ll just agree because they know they need to sell their product and aren’t thinking in terms of profits and losses.”
Visit small towns and art enclaves
There are so many worthwhile landmarks to check off your Oaxaca agenda. Make a visit to the small village of San Martín Tilcajete to marvel at the paper-mache sculptures called alebrijes that you might remember coming alive in Disney’s Coco. Or Pluma Hidalgo is a mountain town known for its amazing coffee.
For arts, Centro de las Artes de San Agustín is a historic textile factory turned modern art museum. Check out Dixza Rugs and Native Farm to learn about the Zapotec’s millenary weaving tradition. And at Manos Que Ven, you’ll find handmade ceramics by blind artist José García Antonio and Teresita Mendoza.
For nature, head to Oaxaca City’s Ethnobotanical Garden to learn about the local flora and fauna. Or explore the Sierra Norte mountain range in Ixtlan de Juarez, which is full of nature hikes. You can also admire the oldest tree in Mexico at Santa María del Tule, which has a 2,000-year-old Montezuma cypress boasting the widest tree trunk in the world.
There are also the Monte Albàn ruins mentioned above, the impressive Mitla ruins that once served as an important religious site for the Mixtecs, and Yagul, an ancient Zapotec city that’s home to the state’s largest ceremonial ball game court, just outside of Tlacolula.
There are also, of course, Oaxacan beaches like surf capital Puerto Escondido and clothing-optional Zipolite, but exploring the coast is its own separate trip.
Eat goat barbacoa and yellow mole
From street food to markets to fancier sit-down restaurants, the food in Oaxaca is unparalleled. Start with the buzzing markets to get a real sense of the local scene. Like the famous Sunday one in Tlacolula, many Oaxacan villages designate one day a week for a massive, town-wide market offering food, drink, and handcrafted specialties.
On Wednesdays, Vasquez recommends a visit to the market in Etla, which is famous for its goat barbacoa. But if for whatever reason he can’t make that one, he’ll opt for getting the stewed meat at Tlacolula’s Sunday market. Ocotlán’s Friday market rivals Tlacolula in size and is a great place to try empanadas de amarillo, which are filled with chicken and a yellow mole sauce.
If you’re still craving meat, head to the Pasillo de Humo—which literally translates to hallway of smoke—in the 20 de Noviembre Mercado. There you’ll find an array of meats on sale from different vendors, which you can have smoked on-site and paired with accompaniments like tortillas, pickled veggies, salsas, and cilantro. Enjoy it with a beer or other beverage, while the sweet smells of charred chorizo, chicken, pork, and beef waft by your table.
There are also plenty of street-eating opportunities after the bars close. La Chinita is renowned for massive tlayudas smeared with pork drippings and bean paste, your protein of choice, and griddled with stringy quesillo. It opens around 7 pm and has a tight operation with a steady line un...

Yellen Says US Economy ‘resilient’ Amid Global Headwinds – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/yellen-says-us-economy-resilient-amid-global-headwinds-69news-wfmz-tv/
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen sought Wednesday to project confidence in the U.S. financial outlook while pledging vigilance in responding to “risks on the horizon.”
She is offering that message as global finance leaders gather in Washington to discuss the increasingly dismal view of the global economy.
“Our economy remains resilient in the face of global economic headwinds,” Yellen said at a meeting on the sidelines of this week’s annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and its sister lending agency, the World Bank.
Her remarks to the Bretton Woods Committee’s International Council crediting President Joe Biden’s domestic policies for contributing to U.S. economic strength came as administration officials try to talk up the president’s policies ahead of midterm elections. Those elections will decide the balance of power in Congress and statehouses across the nation. Democrats — with no margin for error — are fighting to retain control of the House and Senate.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has driven up food and energy prices globally — in some places exponentially, exposing vulnerabilities in the global food and energy supply. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, rising inflation and worsening climate conditions are also impacting world economies and exacerbating other crises, like high debt levels held by lower-income countries.
These risks prompted the IMF to lower projections for global economic growth in 2023, with world economic growth expected to be lower by $4 trillion through 2026.
The bleak projections come as central banks around the world raise interest rates in hopes of taming rising inflation. The U.S. Federal Reserve has been the most aggressive in using interest rate hikes as an inflation-cooling tool.
Vitor Gaspar, director of the IMF’s Fiscal Affairs Department said Wednesday that world leaders need to “be prepared for a shock-prone world.”
Yellen, a former U.S. Federal Reserve chair, said the Biden administration is “committed to working with our partners to build greater resilience, in America and globally, to the types of shocks we’ve seen.”
“We are highly attuned to the risks on the horizon,” Yellen said. “Many other major economies are facing high inflation as well. They must also continue implementing policies to rein that in.”
“Our path forward begins with the jobs we have to do at home,” she said.
