Experts Ponder Hurdles To Nutritional Health At CRN Conference – Natural Products INSIDER https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/experts-ponder-hurdles-to-nutritional-health-at-crn-conference-natural-products-insider/
PHOENIX—At its core, the mission of natural food and beverage brands, and dietary supplement companies, is to move along a continuum from essential health to prevention of degenerative diseases to optimal living to an enhanced life.
The recipe to start on this path is pretty well documented, if surprisingly accessible.
Sleep well. Get up and move. Drink water. Eat fruits and vegetables to get your essential vitamins and minerals.
As if.
“Grandma has been saying forever to eat our veggies and we still don’t eat our veggies,” said Floyd Chilton, Ph.D., director of the Center for Precision Nutrition and Wellness at the University of Arizona, at the annual Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN) conference in Phoenix on Oct. 11. “We should have gotten to the point of exhaustion that we are not doing anything to modify that.”
Only about one in four Americans consumes the daily recommendation of five to nine fruit and vegetable servings every day. Even that sounds like a bit of a reach—unless you start counting ketchup as a vegetable.
The promise and potholes may come from the appeal of scientific investigation. While the mainstream, pharma-based American model may look at nutrition science as a “soft” science, there is no doubt that positive nutrition can both prevent diseases and improve overall vitality.
“Essential health is where our dietary guidelines are. We’re not trying to prevent (nutrient deficiency diseases) scurvy and pellagra and beri beri,” said Emili Ho, Ph.D., director of the Linus Pauling Institute, at the CRN conference. “Optimal health is much more than about preventing deficiencies and disease. How do we think about optimal health?”
Science can sell. It’s not the end-all and be-all, and sometimes the science gets misinterpreted in the popular press, and sometimes the message is enough to turn consumers all the way off.
“The complaint I always hear is the nutritionist says one thing and then says another thing later,” said Barbara Shukitt-Hale, Ph.D., at the Neuroscience and Aging Laboratory at Tufts University. “We need to be consistent over time. Eggs are good for you; eggs are not good for you.”
Shukitt-Hale has conducted reams of research, mostly on rats, investigating simple nutritional interventions on aging animals.
“All our animal studies showed us that nutritional interventions can reverse deficits in learning and memory and declines in motor behaviors,” she said at CRN’s conference. “These are easily achievable quantities of berry fruits like blueberries and strawberries, which can improve some aspects of cognition in healthy older adults.”
Shukitt-Hale said one-half cup to two cups a day of blueberries and strawberries have been shown to reverse some age-related deficits in cognition as well as preserve function among the healthy geriatric set.
Sounds easy, right? And yet.
“A lot of the time,” said Shukitt-Hale, “the message gets mixed up.”
Who’s to bless and who’s to blame? How can the message of simple nutritional intake leading to better lives break through?
“It’s like you put six keys in a lock and you have to turn them simultaneously for the lock to open,” said Stephen Lindemann, Ph.D., assistant professor in the department of food science and nutrition science at Purdue University. “So branding is extraordinarily complex.”
Maybe a middle-aged shopper is thinking about forestalling chronic diseases, but a young professional is more interested in powering through the afternoon, and a mother just wants to make sure her toddler does not get sick.
And certain diverse communities have different health concerns, be it outsized incidence of obesity or diabetes. Lindemann advocates research targeting these groups to make nutrition resonate with those communities.
And then, Lindemann says, the onus is on brands to communicate that message. Another way might be to just go stealth with the message because otherwise it might not take. Too many Americans would rather experience the salty crunch of a chip than the crisp sweetness of an apple. And who knows what to do to get a vegetable to taste anything like a burger with bacon?
“The approach,” said the University of Arizona’s Chilton, “is to treat everyone like toddlers and hide the veggies. We need to deliver the health benefits in a way that palatability is not impacted. It’s a challenge from a food science perspective, but we need to get vegetables in a product without them being expected and declined.”
You have your marching orders.

Persona 6 Should Explore The Future The Metaverse TheGamer
Persona 6 Should Explore The Future The Metaverse – TheGamer https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/persona-6-should-explore-the-future-the-metaverse-thegamer/
Persona’s demonic realm is called the metaverse, but what if it explored the tech metaverse
The word ‘metaverse’ has been in the zeitgeist a lot recently. It seems to be used primarily by businesses with no real idea of how online communities or gaming spaces work, in a fellow-kids-style attempt to muscle in on the moolah. They stand there in their Music Band shirt, skateboard over their shoulder, talking about the brave new frontiers of progress when what they’re describing is a terrible Walmart advert inside of Roblox. When Persona 5 used the word metaverse, it was a metaphysical universe. A world within the world where demons and dark desires lay, infecting humanity, corrupting their hearts. Persona 6 needs to go back to the metaverse, only this time, it should be the crappy Walmart metaverse.
Persona’s last two entries have explored society’s engagement with technology. In Persona 4, the window to the metaverse is a television screen. In Persona 5, a decade later, it’s your mobile phone. Society has changed how it engages with pop culture, shifting from the television in our living rooms to the phone in our palms. Phones have gone from being a convenient way to keep in touch with people to being the most central piece of technology in our lives.
We still use them to keep in touch, but rarely as phones – far more often as texts, or DMs, or even emails. We live our lives on our phones, we socialise on our phones, we’re entertained and informed by our phones, we can’t go to the toilet without a phone in our hands. Persona 5’s depiction of how teenagers use phones is already dated five years on, and Persona 6 offers a chance to delve deeper.
In Persona 5, phones are mainly used for texting and for GPS maps. The Phantom Thieves access the metaverse through apps, but there are few other apps that get any use. Even the way fans get in touch with the Phantom Thieves is through the outdated concept of a message board. The emergence of influencers, content creators, a new layer of celebrity, and a new way to communicate across the internet is exactly the sort of thing you’d expect Persona and its politicised teenage angst to explore. I’ve already made the case for why our protagonist should be an influencer, but the more I hear uninformed outsiders bleat about the benefits of the metaverse because it can allow you to do what VRChat and Second Life did a decade ago, the more I want to see Persona’s take on it.
The internet will become increasingly important to how we not only communicate in the future, but how we live our lives. In ten or so years time, we may have something that ticks whatever boxes we may have for the existence of the metaverse, but they will be shaped by user interaction, by social trends, and most importantly, by young people. They will not be created from above by CEOs suggesting you might be able to wander the aisles of a supermarket in VR, or attend business meetings with avatars that resemble PS2 graphics. We’re not quite there yet, so there’s a lot of room for imagination, if Persona 6 decides to go that way, as well as for critique of the botched attempts of megacorps to wade in on trends of the youngest generation and turn them into soulless money-spinners.
A reveal for Persona 6 is surely imminent, especially with the 25th anniversary segments out of the way and, with Persona 5 Royal coming to Xbox, PC, and Switch this month, the long tail of Persona 5 has finally stopped wagging. It’s time to look towards the future. One way or another, that probably means the metaverse.

Ed Harding Brought Haunt To Halloween The Opinion Tribune
Ed Harding Brought Haunt To Halloween – The Opinion Tribune https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/ed-harding-brought-haunt-to-halloween-the-opinion-tribune/
When I think of the late Ed Harding, who passed away last January, several things come to mind, most notably his outgoing and friendly demeanor, generosity, outstanding photography skills and last but not least, his love of Halloween.
For nearly four decades Ed was our community’s Mr. Halloween – the guy who put the haunt into the season by turning his garage into “Harding’s House Of Horrors,” a haunted house that attracted children and adults from across the community who were looking for a good scare. Ed didn’t charge an admission to go through his haunt, but he did accept free-will offerings that were donated to a local cause or organization, usually the Glenwood Booster Club.
During an interview I conducted with Ed about this time last year, he talked about the history of his haunted house and how much it had grown over a nearly 40-year period.
“It started with a talking pumpkin,” he said. “We had a lot of fun with that. The trick-or-treaters were talking to it. So, the next year, I thought, ‘Well, I’ll do a little display instead of just a talking pumpkin.’”
That “ little display” evolved and grew over the years and eventually became an all-out haunted house featuring not only the ghouls, ghosts, goblins and creepy characters you’d expect to encounter at a haunt, but also some high-tech gadgets and creatures Ed created and installed himself. Last year, he added an awesome smoke-blowing dinosaur dragon. Harding’s House of Horror’s was a traditional Halloween stop for many Glenwood children and families through the years.
In addition to staging his haunted house, Ed also established a Halloween photo booth for youngsters who were trick or treating around Glenwood’s Town Square during Square Crow Days. Although there will be no haunted house in Ed’s garage this year, the photo booth tradition will live on at Square Crow Days and the entire event on Saturday, Oct. 22 (9 – 11 a.m.) is being dedicated in his honor. The photo booth will be outside City Hall.
“This year, with the blessing of the family, we would like to dedicate the Square Crow Days in honor of Ed. It seems perfectly fitting,” Square Crow Days organizer Emily Prickett said in a recent post on the Friends of Ed Harding Facebook page.
The promotional flyer for Square Crow Days says, “We are honored to dedicate this year’s Square Crow Days celebration to Mr. Ed Harding. He loved our community, photography and all things spooky. We always looked forward to him capturing the best moments from this event.”
Indeed he did. In fact, Ed captured the best moments from every event he photographed – spooky, athletic or otherwise.
Crypto Market Shows No Signs Of Positive Movement Is Uptober A Myth? NewsBTC
Crypto Market Shows No Signs Of Positive Movement, Is ‘Uptober’ A Myth? – NewsBTC https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/crypto-market-shows-no-signs-of-positive-movement-is-uptober-a-myth-newsbtc/
The crypto market woes from September look to have spilled onto October and going against the historical trend of October being a rather bullish month. September had seen the crypto market close with muted performances, but there has not been much change for the new month. Almost two weeks into the month, and it is starting to look like the much-awaited “Uptober” will disappoint investors.
Poor performances All-Around
All of the indexes in the crypto market are seeing poor performances from market participants. The first two weeks of the month have come back with negative movement and the declines have continued. The size of a cryptocurrency has not mattered either since they have all suffered closely similar fates.
The Small Cap Index came out as the worst performing for the first two weeks of October with -4.7%. This is understandable given small cap altcoins have been known to take movements a couple of steps further; recoveries run higher and declines run lower.
Large Cap coins followed as the second-worst performer in the same time period with returns of -2.4%. A bit more surprising given that they closely follow bitcoin price but it did not fall too much behind the Mid Cap Index which saw a decline of -2.1%.
Market performance remains bad | Source: Arcane Research
Bitcoin emerged as the best performer for this time period with only -1.5% in losses. It also follows the trend that investors are turning more towards bitcoin during this time and taking advantage of the decline in price.
Crypto Market Deviates From Norm
All of the performances highlighted above only go to show that the crypto market is not performing as expected. Even though investors are moving back into bitcoin, the market share of stablecoins is still on the rise, so there is still a flight to safety among investors.
Total market cap below $900 billion | Source: Crypto Total Market Cap on TradingView.com
For the last week, the crypto market dominance of bitcoin fell by another 0.20%, and ETH fell 0.24%, with recorded losses from others in the top 10 such as BNB, ADA, and SOL. Most of this lost dominance went to stablecoins such as USDT, USDC, and BUSD, all of which saw an increase in their dominance.
Crypto market sentiment still remains low in the extreme fear territory, which suggests that there is no expected recovery in the market during this time. Unless there is a reversal in this move to stablecoins, the market will continue to see negative rates.

Oct 12 (Reuters) – U.S. consumers can expect to pay up to 28% more to heat their homes this winter due to surging fuel costs and a slightly colder weather forecast than last year, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) projected in its winter fuels outlook on Wednesday.
Nearly half of U.S. households rely on natural gas for heat, with the average cost for those homes expected to rise by 28% to $931 for the October-to-March period from the same time a year earlier, the statistical arm of the U.S. Department of Energy said.
The average cost for a home with gas last winter was $724, far cheaper than other major sources of heat.
U.S. gas prices at the Henry Hub benchmark were up about 75% so far this year as soaring global gas prices feed demand for U.S. exports due to supply disruptions and sanctions linked to Russia’s Feb. 24 invasion of Ukraine.
Electricity is the primary heating source for about 40% of homes. It is more expensive than gas at an estimated $1,359 per household this coming winter – but that represents a more modest 10% increase from last winter.

Analysis | ‘Responsible Social Media’ Council Looks To Bridge Divides On Tech – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/analysis-responsible-social-media-council-looks-to-bridge-divides-on-tech-the-washington-post/
Happy Wednesday! Who had “Meta announces legs” on their headline bingo card this week? Brag away and send tips to: cristiano.lima@washpost.com.
Below: The Biden administration announces a proposal affecting gig workers, and Meta’s metaverse pitch for businesses faces some challenges. First:
‘Responsible social media’ council looks to bridge divides on tech
Public officials in Washington for years have sparred along partisan lines over whether social media platforms take down too much or too little hate speech and misinformation.
A council launching this week aims to sidestep those disputes by proposing reforms that tackle issues of bipartisan concern, including children’s safety and national security.
The newly minted Council for Responsible Social Media, set up by the nonpartisan nonprofit Issue One, features a wide-ranging and influential lineup of former U.S. lawmakers and federal officials, advocates, scholars, industry leaders and whistleblowers.
They include former Democratic House majority leader Dick Gephardt, former defense secretary and White House chief of staff Leon Panetta, former Jan. 6 House select committee adviser and Republican congressman Denver Riggleman, former Google ethicist and Center for Humane Technology co-founder Tristan Harris and Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen.
“This is not a think tank. This is an action tank,” Gephardt told The Technology 202. “We want to see results.”
The group is staking out three initial areas of focus: how social media platforms may adversely affect children’s mental health, how they can be weaponized by foreign adversaries to the detriment of U.S. national security and how they may exacerbate societal divisions.
“The core goal of the commission is to really show that there are bipartisan paths forward … that involve having companies have to actually talk about what is their role in society,” Haugen said in an interview.
Haugen said the council can move the debate around social media accountability forward by focusing on areas of “common ground,” like concerns around algorithmic amplification, transparency and platform design choices.
Haugen said proposals the council might explore include giving users, particularly children, the option to “reset algorithms” so they do not keep wandering down the same risky “rabbit holes.”
By focusing on systemic issues, she said, the group might be able to help build support for ideas that sidestep thorny speech debates.
The council has received roughly $250,000 in funding collectively from the Omidyar Network, the Newton and Rochelle Becker Charitable Trust and the Wend Collective, according to Issue One spokesperson Cory Combs. Combs said the council has not received direct funding from any tech companies. Some of the members, including Gephardt and Panetta, have ties to firms that have represented industry giants.
The Omidyar Network, a philanthropic venture launched by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar, has pushed for greater regulation of the tech giants. The Newton and Rochelle Becker Charitable Trust is a foundation that describes itself as a “support organization” for Jewish communities. The Wend Collective is a philanthropic group launched by Walmart magnate James Walton.
The council may also rally around legislation that already has bipartisan support, such as recent Senate bills on kids’ online safety and platform transparency, Haugen said.
One of those proposals, the Kids Online Safety Act, would give parents greater control over their children’s online activity and require that platforms give kids the option to opt out of algorithmic recommendations and other potentially harmful features. The other, the Platform Accountability and Transparency Act, would force companies to turn over data about their services to researchers, or face fresh liability threats if they don’t.
Both proposals have bipartisan support, and the children’s safety bill advanced out of committee in the Senate with broad backing. But neither has a counterpart in the House, and the latter hasn’t been formally introduced, signaling they may both still face a long path to passage.
The council is also poised to shine a brighter spotlight on how U.S. companies may be playing into the hands of foreign adversaries — scrutiny that has largely focused on TikTok, owned by Beijing-based tech giant ByteDance.
The council includes a slew of national security heavyweights, including former defense secretary Chuck Hagel, former CIA director Porter Goss and former Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency director Chris Krebs.
Haugen said one concept the group may explore is requiring “consistent reporting” by companies about how much they are investing to counter foreign influence operations.
The group is launching ahead of a summit in Washington on Thursday, where it plans to lay out a “plan of action for the months and years ahead,” according to a release.
Uber, Lyft, DoorDash shares drop after Biden administration announces gig worker rule
The new proposal would require gig firms to consider workers as employees when they’re “economically dependent” on the company, Rachel Lerman reports. The share prices of Uber, Lyft and DoorDash slid on the news.
Uber said the Labor Department listened to drivers, and argued that drivers prefer the “flexibility” of being independent contractors. Lyft said it would return gig firms to similar rules from the Obama administration, which “did not result in reclassification of drivers.”
The AFL-CIO and Gig Workers Rising praised the proposed rule, but some critics said it didn’t go far enough.
Officials at federal regulators invested in tech stocks
More than 1 in 5 top federal officials disclosed investments in firms that were lobbying their agencies, the Wall Street Journal’s Rebecca Ballhaus, Brody Mullins, Chad Day, John West, Joe Palazzolo and James V. Grimaldi report.
“While the government was ramping up scrutiny of big technology companies, more than 1,800 federal officials reported owning or trading” stock in Amazon, Apple, Facebook or Google, they write. “More than five dozen officials at five agencies, including the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department, reported trading stock in companies shortly before their departments announced enforcement actions, such as charges and settlements, against those companies.”
Some agencies waived rules when the investments caused a conflict. In most cases that the Wall Street Journal identified, ethics officials said employees complied with ethics rules, which have some exceptions allowing officials to hold stock in firms that conflict with their agencies’ work.
Meta pitches the metaverse to corporate America with its new VR headset
The company’s new $1,500 virtual-reality headset will be integrated with ubiquitous Microsoft products, but it’s not clear if that’ll be enough to sway firms to Meta over Apple and TikTok parent ByteDance, which offer or are expected to release their own technology, Naomi Nix reports. Meta has significantly invested in chief executive Mark Zuckerberg’s vision of the metaverse as a place where virtual-reality experiences transform people’s lives.
“The biggest impediment to Meta’s plans doesn’t have an easy fix: The technology required to accomplish some of Meta’s biggest ambitions for its VR devices is, by its own admission, still years away,” Naomi writes. “Even if Meta manages to continue elbowing out its headset competitors, there is no guarantee that most people will want to don the headsets and spend their lives in a virtual world.”

Secretlab Launches Naruto Collaboration Gaming Chairs CBR Comic Book Resources
Secretlab Launches Naruto Collaboration Gaming Chairs – CBR – Comic Book Resources https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/secretlab-launches-naruto-collaboration-gaming-chairs-cbr-comic-book-resources/
Fans of Secretlab and Naruto rejoice — the iconic gaming chair company revealed it collaborated with beloved anime, and the results are stunning.
Secretlab’s Titan Evo 2022 Naruto Shippuden Collection (available in Softweave® Plus Fabric) launched on Oct. 12 as part of the anime’s 20th-anniversary celebrations. Secretlab’s co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Alaric Choo, expressed his love for the anime, saying, “Naruto has never just been an anime — it’s a timeless classic that has defined the teenage years of many, most of our team included. It’s incredible for us to now be able to put an authentic Naruto spin on our award-winning chairs with symbolic elements from the anime. Fans will be proud to add them to their Naruto collection.” The special collaboration chairs are available in S, R, and XL.
The collaboration saw the creation of two different designs: one paying homage to the Greatest Ninja, Naruto, and the other to the Akatsuki, a clan created to bring peace to their home country. Both chairs showcase a metal plate featured on the hitai-ate (protective headband) that the ninjas wear, representing the fealty they swore to their village. The metal plate on the back of Secretlab’s chairs features the award-winning brand’s logo, signifying users’ dedication to the brand. Lauren Takaragawa, Vice President Consumer Products at VIZ Media feels the metal plate is a special addition to the chair, saying, “Secretlab has a knack for capturing the most iconic elements of each partner they collaborate with and translating it into a one-of-a-kind feature in their chairs. They’ve once again successfully created something really true to Naruto Shippuden with this collaboration, especially with the signature Shinobi headband incorporated into the chairs — it’s definitely a must-have for all fans.”
Pick a Side: Naruto or the Akatsuki
The Naruto edition chair has the Eight Trigrams Sealing Style, a fūinjutsu of the Uzumaki clan, which sealed the Nine-Tails into the titular character. It also pays homage to his identity as the Nine-Tails Jinchuriki. The magatamas on the chair’s side wings represent Naruto in Nine-Tails mode, where he draws upon Kurama’s chakra to become the strongest human ever. The chair’s colorway immediately associates itself with the iconic character due to the bright orange that contrasts against the speckled black fabric.
As for the Akatsuki edition chair, an embroidery of the infamous red cloud, which initially represented justice and fairness, but later changed to serve as a symbol of violence and anger to align with the clan’s more recent values, features on the front and back. In addition, the side wings of the chair have a quilted pattern using the same iconic symbol. In a nod to the custom of crossing out the emblem on their hitai-ate, which represents the rescinding of their allegiance, the logo on the metal plate on the back of the Akatsuki chair also has a line going through it.
Founded by Yahiko and his childhood friends as a means to bring peace to their village, the purpose of the Akatsuki changed over time as they descended into villainy. The series’ hero, Naruto, grew up being ostracized by all, only to become a hero against all odds. Secretlab wants to know: which side will you choose?
Secretlab’s TITAN Evo 2022 Naruto and Akatsuki edition chairs are available to purchase now on its official website, secretlab.co.

A recent study out of England found that walking just under 10,000 steps a day reduces a person’s risk of developing dementia by 50 percent. Pick up the pace to a “brisk” walk (over 40 steps per minute), and that risk goes down even further. Perhaps most strikingly, the authors found that even a low number of daily steps was associated with a reduced risk of dementia.
The walking study is the latest finding in a long line of research that links exercise to our brain health. In fact, some authors have suggested that through a brain-healthy lifestyle, an individual may reduce their lifetime risk by 70 percent. I’ve found that the health interventions that benefit the brain and the whole body are the most impactful. Get physically active. Mentally stimulated. Socially connected. Lower your blood pressure, your cholesterol, and your blood sugar.
You don’t have to be a brain expert to know that healthy habits lead to healthy living. But it’s nice when a brain expert offers quantifiable reminders. So, here are a few:
Walk. Cardiovascular health has been linked to better brain health. Improving your cardio fitness does not need to be strenuous or difficult. It can be as easy as walking for 30 minutes a day. Check your pulse rate at the end of your walks and track it over a month. See the number fall? That’s a good indication that your heart (and your brain) are benefitting from your efforts.
Eat well. Reducing your sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol not only improves heart health but brain health, as well. That’s because high blood sugar levels and high blood pressure cause blood vessels in the brain to affect thinking and memory.
See your doctor. Many physicians are equipped with resources for our aging population – especially for cognition and brain health. Your primary care physician can provide tools and education to guide patients with baseline assessments and screenings. This means your doctor is better informed than ever to help you identify early signs of cognitive decline – and direct you to the help you might need.
Forgetting a name from time to time or misplacing your keys does not mean you are on the road to Alzheimer’s disease. As we get older, it is natural for our brains to get a little slower (if also a little wiser). However, should your cognitive problems get worse over time or interfere with your day-to-day life, it might be time to see a specialist.
Several neurological diseases cause a progressive decline in memory, thinking, reasoning, personality, or behavior. Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, Lewy body disease, and others all fall under the umbrella term “dementia.” If you’re over the age of 65, you are at increased risk of developing dementia. In fact, it is estimated that 50 percent of people have changes in the brain that could lead to dementia. That is why taking steps to lower your risk is so important.
Nine thousand eight hundred and twenty-six of them, to be exact.

SK Telecom Spreads Its Metaverse Wings To The Middle East With E& TelecomTV
SK Telecom Spreads Its Metaverse Wings To The Middle East With E& – TelecomTV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/sk-telecom-spreads-its-metaverse-wings-to-the-middle-east-with-e-telecomtv/
When it comes to the metaverse, SK Telecom isn’t hanging around. The innovative South Korean telco was quick out of the traps with the development and commercial launch of its own extended reality (XR) platform in its domestic market last year and is now aiming to become the key partner for other telcos that have been slower off the mark with their own metaverse research and development but want to start offering and monetising XR services as soon as possible.
SK Telecom (SKT) launched its ifland metaverse platform in South Korea in July 2021 and by the end of June this year was attracting 1.63 million monthly active users, while the user software needed to experience the service had been downloaded by 8.7 million people, the operator noted in its second-quarter earnings report.
Then in May this year, SKT announced a collaboration with German telco giant Deutsche Telekom, which will result in a version of the ifland platform being launched for the German market before the end of this year, before being expanded to other DT markets across Europe – see Deutsche Telekom to bring SK Telecom’s metaverse to Europe.
Now SKT has teamed up with regional communications networking powerhouse e& (formerly known as Etisalat) to “jointly promote the metaverse business” in Middle East markets where e& has operations, namely the UAE and Saudi Arabia. (Note: e& also has operations in 12 markets in north and east Africa as well as in Pakistan and Afghanistan, but the memorandum of understanding signed with SKT appears to cover only the Middle East, at least for now.)
According to the new partners, “e& will provide SKT with insights on customers, business model development and service offerings. SKT will develop a metaverse service optimally designed to fit the needs of its customers in the Middle East by fully leveraging its expertise acquired through successful operation of its metaverse service in Korea. In particular, SKT will localise the service by creating iconic landmarks and cities of the UAE within the metaverse, as well as developing special avatars and digital fashion clothing such as traditional costumes that reflect the Middle Eastern culture.”
The two operators plan to initially test metaverse services in the Middle East with some e& customers, then analyse the “service experience and usage patterns to verify service marketability in the region.”
News of the partnership comes only days after e& used the Gitex trade show taking place in Dubai to announce the soft launch of e& universe, its metaverse experience, co-developed with device manufacturer HTC, which is virtually hosted on Mars, and a retail XR experience, developed with Huawei.
In addition, SKT and e& are using Gitex to host a booth that lets attendees try out metaverse experiences.
“Following our major announcement on the metaverse with e& universe at Gitex Global 2022, the partnership with SKT to develop the Metaverse Service is another major step forward as we stay invested in building a robust metaverse ecosystem in the ever-evolving immersive virtual world,” noted Khalifa Al Shamsi (pictured, above), CEO at e& life, the operator’s digital services unit. “The metaverse offers limitless possibilities, opening doors to engaging with customers in innovative ways as they participate in heightened interactive experiences that were previously unimagined. This collaboration will be the start of a new journey as we continue to identify key opportunities to fuel these experiences and build a virtual world that contributes to a brighter, digital future.”
Ha Min-yong, chief development officer (CDO) at SKT (also pictured, above), added: “Through partnership with e&, we expect to deliver new and differentiated metaverse experiences to customers in the Middle East and develop global opportunities for our metaverse service. Going forward, we will expand our cooperation with e& to other areas of ICT,” he added.
The news comes only days after Japanese giant NTT Docomo formed a metaverse division, NTT Qonoq – see NTT Docomo commits to a metaverse future.

IOTA Crypto Price Prediction October IMPT Token Stronger Alternative? Cryptonews
IOTA Crypto Price Prediction October – IMPT Token Stronger Alternative? – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/iota-crypto-price-prediction-october-impt-token-stronger-alternative-cryptonews/
Disclaimer: The Industry Talk section features insights by crypto industry players and is not a part of the editorial content of Cryptonews.com.
IOTA crypto continues to print higher lows and is now up by over 3.5% in the last 24 hours. Technical indicators also suggest that IOTA might soon be making headway back up to the $0.30 price levels.
Will IOTA begin to pump again soon?
For the last 150 days IOTA has been trading within a consolidation pattern ranging between price of $0.387 and $0.232.
If the blockchain markets flip bullish later this October, there is a good chance we could see IOTA attempt to retest the next resistance level of $0.34 and perhaps then secure the next technical target of $0.45.
The current prices we see today for IOTA have also been reflected in the past during the 2018-2020 bear markets, which leaves us questioning whether IOTA is now undervalued?
IOTA/USDT – Weekly Time Frame.
Buying IOTA in March 2020 during the Covid-19 crash would have offered investors up to 5,000% gains if held to the top of the bull run in 2021.
From a technical analysis perspective IOTA is looking rather bearish but current price levels could potentially lead to strong gains by the next crypto bull run if history does decide to repeat itself.
IOTA has been trading in this particular channel for over 150 days since the Terra Luna crash in May.
The bullish scenario is that IOTA recovers backup to $0.34 and then continues to pump up to $0.45. This particular impulse wave would see a price increase of roughly 74.33%.
It is hard to determine what could happen for the crypto markets over the next few weeks, but if IOTA is able to consolidate further throughout October there is a good chance of breaking out to the upside.
$0.249 acts as a key level of support which is vital not to be lost or we could see IOTA potentially drop down to $0.23 or below. This would be a new local low for this particular market cycle and be devastating for long term holders.

IMPT Token Carbon Offsetting Alternative to IOTA?
IOTA is one of the more sustainable crypto choices the blockchain markets have to offer but a new contender has arrived known as IMPT Token.
The IMPT platform provides an imapctful carbon offset program where you as a potential investor can contribute to an ecosystem that connects socially responsible brands with businesses and individuals who want to reduce their carbon footprint.
Whilst IOTA still has potential to pump beyond 10x and has achieved fantastic milestones, you might have to wait until the next crypto bull run in 2024-2025 to realise such returns.
IMPT Token is currently in presale and has already raised a tremendous $3,670,217 in just over a week. There is a good chance that it will launch for public sale in Q1 2023 and holders are anticipating huge upside potential of up to 50x returns.
If you are finding yourself feeling rather bored from the current state of play from the crypto markets, IMPT Token could shed some light on your portfolio and be the next coin to explode this bear market.
Interested parties can head over to the official impt.io website to research the white paper and secure IMPT Tokens today before sell out.

Biden Downplays Risk Of Major U.S. Recession Amid IMF Warning The Washington Post
Biden Downplays Risk Of Major U.S. Recession Amid IMF Warning – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/biden-downplays-risk-of-major-u-s-recession-amid-imf-warning-the-washington-post/
As banks and international financial organizations warned of the possibility of a global recession, President Biden said he does not foresee one in the United States, but he acknowledged the prospect of a minor downturn.
“I don’t think there will be a recession,” Biden told CNN’s Jake Tapper in an interview that aired Tuesday. “If it is, it will be a very slight recession,” he added. “Look, it’s possible. I don’t anticipate it.”
Biden’s take came as the International Monetary Fund, a global lender, downgraded its outlook for the world economy and warned of “storm clouds” gathering — among them “persistent” inflation, the fallout from the Ukraine war and a slowdown in China’s property market impacting the global economy.
The chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, Jamie Dimon, also told CNBC this week that the United States is likely to tip into recession “six to nine months from now,” despite at the moment “actually still doing well.” He added: “This is serious stuff.”
A recession is technically defined as two quarters, or six months, of negative economic growth. However, the National Bureau of Economic Research, the official arbiter of U.S. recessions, looks for other signs such as “significant” and widespread declines across the economy, including in the employment rate, consumer spending and other factors.
Biden, however, said financial experts often throw around predictions. “Every six months they say this,” he said, but it “hadn’t happened yet.”
“We’re in a better position than any other major country in the world — economically and politically,” he continued. “We still have real problems,” he added, but he said recent legislation such as the nearly $2 trillion American Rescue Plan and Inflation Reduction Act has accomplished a lot.
As international head winds continue to weigh on the world economy, the 190-member IMF forecast that global growth would slow from 6 percent in 2021 to 3.2 percent in 2022 and 2.7 percent in 2023 — the weakest growth since 2001, it said Tuesday, except for the global financial crisis and the acute phase of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The three largest economies, the United States, China and the euro area, will continue to stall,” Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, the IMF’s chief economist, told reporters. “In short, the worst is yet to come, and for many people, 2023 will feel like a recession.”
Gourinchas said that countries accounting for a third of world output are expected to “contract” this year or next. In the United States, he tweeted, rising interest rates could slow growth to 1 percent in 2023 down from 1.6 percent this year.
Globally, he wrote, “inflation remains the most immediate threat to current and future prosperity by squeezing real incomes & undermining macro stability.” He urged central banks around the world to “keep a steady hand with monetary policy firmly focused on taming inflation.”
This morning, I presented our analysis of the global economy. Russia’s war in Ukraine, the cost-of-living crisis & slowdown in China are the primary reasons we are downgrading growth to 3.2% in 2022 & 2.7% in 2023. https://t.co/rV7PnlIg55 (1/5) pic.twitter.com/XZLSWB5jq6
— Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas (@pogourinchas) October 11, 2022
Biden said he knows that families are worried about the rising cost of energy and medication and are looking for “breathing room,” with the economy set to be a major focus of the upcoming midterm elections.
U.S. job growth slowed again in September, a sign that the labor market may be cooling from its red-hot peak earlier this year, even though it remains an area of strength for a U.S. economy bracing for a downturn. The Federal Reserve has also hiked interest rates five times since March, moving at an aggressive pace to curb inflation and balance the economy. Nevertheless, some financial experts warn that a recession and financial pain are in store for American families and businesses.
As the war in Ukraine rumbles into its eighth month, the decision by a coalition of oil-producing nations led by Russia and Saudi Arabia last week to slash oil production by 2 million barrels per day, in a rebuke to Biden, has also deepened fears of a global recession. The White House said Tuesday that Biden is reevaluating the U.S. relationship with Saudi Arabia following the OPEC Plus announcement.
Auvik Acquires SaaS Management Security PC Management Tools ChannelE2E
Auvik Acquires SaaS Management, Security, PC Management Tools – ChannelE2E https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/auvik-acquires-saas-management-security-pc-management-tools-channele2e/
by Joe Panettieri • Oct 12, 2022
Network management software provider Auvik, backed by private equity firm Great Hill Partners, has acquired Saaslio and Boardgent. Auvik gains SaaS application discovery and remote desktop management capabilities, respectively. Financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.
This is technology M&A deal number 891 that ChannelE2E has covered so far in 2022. See more than 2,000 technology M&A deals involving MSPs, MSSPs & IT service providers listed here.
The acquisitions align with Auvik’s earlier acquisition of WiFi management software provider MetaGeek, the buyer said.
Auvik Acquisitions: What MSP Partners Potentially Gain
Saaslio is the SaaS discovery solution that enables MSPs to uncover, manage, and secure their clients’ SaaS ecosystems, the seller said.
Saaslio, founded in 2020, is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. The company has five employees listed on LinkedIn. The company raised $430,000 in pre-seed funding, according to Crunchbase.
In some ways, Saaslio’s software may compete against Augmentt and SaaS Alert — two startups that offer SaaS application security solutions to MSPs.
Meanwhile, Boardgent was founded in 2019 and has eight employees listed on LinkedIn. The company’s software allows MSPs and IT departments to monitor, support and secure their computers.
Auvik, founded in 2011, has 267 employees listed on LinkedIn. The company originally positioned its software for MSPs, but Auvik has expanded its base to all types of IT teams — including corporate IT departments.
Private equity firm Great Hill Partners invested $250 million in Auvik in July 2021. That deal represents a majority stake in the cloud-based network management software provider.
Auvik Expands MSP Software, IT Management Portfolio
The acquisitions may position Auvik to compete more directly against entrenched endpoint management and RMM (remote monitoring and management) software tools from ConnectWise, Kaseya (owner of Datto), N-able, NinjaOne, and upstarts such as Atera and Syncro.
Describing how Auvik’s MSP partners and IT customers will benefit from the deals, Auvik said its evolving product line will “give IT departments the ability to easily identify, isolate and resolve issues impacting the end-user experience—an area not covered by traditional endpoint management and RMM tools—at the network, application, and endpoint levels.”
In a prepared statement about the acquisitions, Auvik CEO Marc Morin said;
“An organization’s ability to be productive is paramount anywhere. Auvik is working to support distributed-first organizations that need a centralized tool to monitor and manage the modern work environment. Auvik, Saaslio, and Boardgent have a similar approach to the market and how we value our clients. We believe that the combination of our deep expertise in network monitoring and management, experienced workforces, proprietary technologies, and innovative solutions allows our unified company to deliver the ultimate network monitoring platform.”
Added John Harden, founder of Saaslio:
“The advent of SaaS productivity apps has enabled the work-from-anywhere trend and lessened reliance on VPN connectivity, further complicating the work IT teams must do to keep end-users productive. Now, Saaslio and Auvik will provide IT professionals visibility and centralized control beyond the office firewall and into SaaS applications and issues facing end-users.”
Concluded Ricardo Polo Jaramillo, CEO of Boardgent:
“Much like Auvik, we want to enable IT pros to quickly resolve any end-user impacting issues. By joining forces, IT teams can now have the ability to diagnose and resolve end-user experience issues as they arrive, no matter where they sit on the new network.”

Dota 2 Star N0tail Has A Mostly Danish Gaming PC Setup – PCGamesN https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/dota-2-star-n0tail-has-a-mostly-danish-gaming-pc-setup-pcgamesn/
The ideal gaming PC is all a matter of perspective, but when that perspective comes from Dota 2 icon and back-to-back The International winner, N0tail, it’s worth taking a note of. Here’s all of the kit that the OG founder uses to play both the MOBA and a host of other games.
In conjunction with the talented Emmy-winning folks over at Red Bull Media House, N0tail was tasked with outlining his dream gaming hangout space in an attempt to create his unique version of the Red Bull Ultimate Gaming Room.
While a puppy proof sofa for his two adorable pals, Bjørn and Ulv, was a must for the former Dota 2 pro, the heart of a gaming room is that all-important ring – so what does N0tail consider to be the best gaming PC?
Chatting to Dota 2’s most decorated player, I quizzed him on the hardware decided to use in his new room. “I’m using Shark Gaming monitors,” he says. “Shark Gaming has been very helpful with setting up my place here.
“SteelSeries is the peripheral sponsor for OG, and I’ve personally used it for five or six years. I’ve had a Logitech mouse, but I’ve always used a SteelSeries keyboard. It’s the solid choice in my world.”
Given that N0tail himself is Danish, he adds in a playful “know what else? It’s a Danish company. If it’s Danish design you know it’s good. We’re more than just LEGO!” It’s not lost on me that Shark Gaming is also Danish – there seems to be a bit of a pattern emerging here, right N0tail?
Having won back to back TIs in 2018 and 2019, as well as four Dota 2 Majors, any advice N0tail gives is worth looking into. But, if you’re looking for some more hardware advice, be sure to check out our best gaming monitor and best gaming mousepad lists. We’ve also got a rundown of the best Dota 2 heroes for beginners if you’re hoping to walk in the footsteps of the Danish titan himself.

SAN ANTONIO — A now-former San Antonio police officer was charged Tuesday with two counts of aggravated assault by a peace officer for shooting and gravely wounding a teen eating a hamburger in his car in a McDonald’s parking lot. The teen had begun driving away when the officer opened fire.
James Brennand, 25, was charged in the Oct. 2 shooting of Erik Cantu, 17, according to a police statement. He turned himself in to police Tuesday night and remained in custody, said Police Chief William McManus.
Cantu is still unconscious and on life support, his family said Tuesday.
“There is no improvement in his condition,” the family said in a statement delivered by their lawyer, Brian Powers. “The last two days have been difficult, and we expect more difficulty ahead, but we remain hopeful.”
Brennand, a rookie officer, reported the vehicle Cantu was sitting in had evaded him the night before during an attempted traffic stop. Brennand said he suspected the vehicle was stolen.
In body camera footage released by police, Brennand opens the car door and tells Cantu to get out. The car drives backward with the door open, and the officer fires multiple times into the vehicle. He continues to shoot as the car drives away.
Investigators quickly determined that the use of deadly force was unwarranted, and Brennand was fired. Charges against Cantu of aggravated assault and evading arrest were dropped.
A police spokesperson did not immediately respond to an inquiry about whether the vehicle was actually stolen.
Brennand is charged with two counts of assault because there was a passenger in the car. The passenger was unharmed.
In a press conference Tuesday evening, the police chief defended the department’s training and said the failures were those of the individual officer.
In an appearance on CNN earlier Tuesday, McManus said he expected aggravated assault charges would be filed, and murder charges in the event Cantu dies.
McManus said Brennand’s body camera video was “horrific.”
“There is no question in anybody’s mind looking at that video that the shooting is not justified,” McManus said.
Police officials and the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office did not immediately return messages from The Associated Press. Brennand has no published telephone number and could not be reached for comment.
Cantu’s condition, as related in his family’s statement, is in stark contrast to what police officials said in the wake of the shooting: that Cantu was hospitalized in stable condition.
“We’d like to correct any misrepresentations that Erik is in ‘stable condition’ or he is ‘going to be fine.’ That is not true. Every breath is a struggle for Erik. We ask for everyone’s continued prayers for our son,” the family said.

Are You Brave Enough To Sleep In The ‘Ghostbusters’ Firehouse This Halloween? – CNN https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/are-you-brave-enough-to-sleep-in-the-ghostbusters-firehouse-this-halloween-cnn/
(CNN) — There’s something strange going on in this Oregon neighborhood.
Sony and vacation rental company Vacasa have teamed up to offer one courageous group of friends an exclusive three-night stay in the Ghostbusters Firehouse.
The building, recreated from the 1984 film “Ghostbusters,” is in Portland — not New York City, where the film takes place. But it’s still the perfect place from which to launch a ghost-catching business.

The three-story firehouse features all the essentials: a P.K.E. Meter, Ghost Traps, Proton Packs, an Aura Video-Analyzer and an Ecto-Containment Unit to store the evil spirits you catch. Ecto-1, the Ghostbusters’ vehicle, is even parked in the firehouse bay.
Guests can wear the famous Ghostbusters fight suits and snack on Stay Puft Marshmallows, among other creepy activities. Just try not to make eye contact with the cursed painting of “Vigo the Carpathian,” the main antagonist of 1989’s “Ghostbusters II.”
The recreated firehouse is located in Portland, not in New York City where the film takes place.

“We’re dedicated to the details, and this Ghostbusters Firehouse in Portland is no exception,” Allison Lowrie, chief marketing officer at Vacasa, told CNN.
“Every room brings a new discovery, from an interactive Ghost Containment Unit to symmetrical book stacking and walls upon walls of scientific, ghost-hunting equipment. It’s designed to be enjoyed by Ghostbusters superfans and travelers with a sense of ’80s nostalgia alike.”
The immersive experience will take place from October 28 to 31, the perfect time of year to stir up spirits.
Booking opens on October 21.

Guests brave enough to book the three-night stay can do so on October 21 at 10 a.m. PT for a nightly rate of $19.84. That rate was chosen in honor of the year Ghostbusters debuted, Vacasa said in a news release. The experience is first-come, first-serve, so mark your calendars.
And fear not, even if you can’t stay at the firehouse, you can still check out a Matterport 360 virtual tour of the building on the rental listing.

Robot Dog Adds To UBs Collection Of Cool Gadgets University At Buffalo
Robot Dog Adds To UB’s Collection Of Cool Gadgets – University At Buffalo https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/robot-dog-adds-to-ubs-collection-of-cool-gadgets-university-at-buffalo/
It doesn’t bark. It doesn’t shed. It doesn’t even have a head.
Meet Spot, UB’s newest gadget. The robot dog, made by Boston Dynamics, arrived on campus earlier this summer.
Since then, it has been making its home — doghouse, if you will — inside the Distributed Robotics and Networked Embedded Sensing (DRONES) lab on the first floor of Davis Hall.
One recent morning, the robot sat motionless in a corner of the lab amid quadcopter drones until its handler, Karthik Dantu, associate professor of computer science and engineering, awakened it with a remote control.
Spot then sprung to life, like an alert border collie ready to herd a flock of sheep. Its four legs moved in synchronized step, tapping the concrete floor in military-like cadence.
Spot trades certain canine features — namely a head and fur — for a sophisticated network of sensors that allow it to walk in rough terrain, up and down stairs, and in other real-world environments that robots have struggled with.
Spot can even dance.
But it’s not all fun and games. The pup has a job at UB. It will serve as a learning and research platform, enabling faculty and students to explore new frontiers in robotics, autonomous vehicles, computer science, artificial intelligence and other fields.
“It’s really an incredible machine at the forefront of robotics,” says Dantu. “I think our students, as well as our faculty, are going to have a lot of fun working with Spot.”
The robot is the latest in a series of cool gizmos that UB has acquired for learning and research. Perhaps the most visible is Olli, the mostly 3D-printed, self-driving shuttle that plies Service Center Road on North Campus.
Olli is sometimes joined by its less conspicuous cousin, an unnamed Lincoln MKZ that’s retrofitted with autonomous vehicle technology. The pair often cruise by SOAR, the Structure for Outdoor Autonomy Research, one of the largest outdoor, enclosed drone-testing facilities in the nation.
Elsewhere at UB, there is the industrial robot Baxter (built by Rethink Robotics) and other pneumatic robots, as well as the Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, where Dantu serves as an affiliated faculty member.
David Doermann, the institute’s director and an Empire Innovation Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, says the institute serves as a clearinghouse at UB for AI, data science, robotics and other exciting, tech-focused fields.
The acquisition of Spot, as well as other strategic investments, will help bring together educators, researchers, students and external partners to continue UB on its path as an international leader in creating, curating and disseminating data and computing-related knowledge and skills, he says.
“Our mission is to provide the infrastructure and opportunities to build relationships, facilitate visionary ideas that are needed to address society’s most pressing problems,” he says.
One other note about your friendly neighborhood robot dog: Spot will soon have a new name. Doermann and Dantu have been seeking suggestions from the UB community, and plan to unveil Spot’s new handle later this month.

Porotech Unveils World First Nextgen Display Technology | Business Weekly – Business Weekly https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/porotech-unveils-world-first-nextgen-display-technology-business-weekly-business-weekly/
12 October, 2022 – 12:34 By Tony Quested
Porotech, a global leader in microLED and Gallium Nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology, has launched the world’s first public demonstration of an ‘all-in-one’ full-colour display of microLED pixels.
Porotech is pioneering the next generation of displays by using a single microLED diode for all colours, moving away from the constraints of the RGB (red-green-blue) sub-pixel model that underpins all current commercial display technologies.
Its innovation lies in its game-changing DynamicPixelTuning (DPT) technology. The company won the new Materials Technology category in the recent Business Weekly Awards and is included in our new Killer50 rankings (published tomorrow), featuring the top 50 science & technology businesses in this world-class cluster.
By using a new class of Gallium Nitride materials, DPT enables a single microLED chip to produce any visible colour. The material that underpins DPT, PoroGaN®, allows a modulated current to be leveraged to emit visible light covering the entire colour spectrum on a single microLED chip.
Among the colours it can emit a DPT microLED is able to achieve a world first by emitting pure white colour from a single pixel.
DPT’s potential is game-changing for the display industry at large. Through removing the need for RGB sub-pixels, DPT allows a microLED-driven display to increase overall pixel density fourfold.
As a result, DPT can produce substantial gains in resolution, brightness and efficiency for every type of display. This breakthrough is of particular interest for small form factor displays that demand high resolutions, such as AR and VR displays, as well as wearable tech.
According to a market report from Grand View Research, the global AR market size in 2021 sat at $25.33 billion and is expected to grow by 40.9 per cent a year from 2022 to 2030.
Porotech is already making waves in the AR industry, including in Silicon Valley, with the DPT technology winning ‘Best Prototype’ at the 2022 Display Week industry gathering.
MicroLEDs represent the only viable solution for the future of display technology, offering myriad benefits such as improved brightness, energy efficiency, contrast ratio, longer device lifetimes, along with greater pixel densities and resolutions.
Porotech’s all-in-one pixel technology allows microLEDs to achieve unparalleled commercial viability, removing the reliance on RGB altogether – a cumbersome approach dating back to the days of cathode-ray tube (CRT) displays.
Porotech will be making the first public debut of DPT at CES 2023 in Las Vegas, where it will be showcasing a 0.26 inch DPT microdisplay with a 5 micrometre full colour pixel, followed by various other industry events in Q1 2023.
Porotech’s CEO and co-founder Dr Tongtong Zhu says: “The world’s first full colour and all-in-one microLED display is a monumental achievement by Porotech. Mass-produced microLEDs will be pivotal for the future of displays, particularly the emerging AR and VR spaces.
“Our technology has solved a fundamental technical and engineering problem facing microLED display quality, manufacturability, and—most importantly—system integration.
“This doesn’t just herald widespread adoption of consumer-grade MR, VR, and AR. In fact, DPT also offers radical improvements in TV, signage, and smart wearables in both consumer and professional contexts.
“By allowing pixels to move beyond RGB and quadrupling the resolution of any given display, DPT is set to unlock new uses for displays in every segment of society.”
