When you pit father against daughter and mother against son, things can go awry in the worst way. Best Utility Tokens In 2022 – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/best-utility-tokens-in-2022-cryptonews/ Disclaimer: The Industry Talk section features insights by crypto industry players and is not a part of the editorial content of Cryptonews.com. Utility tokens refer to crypto projects that offer real-world value, insofar as they grant access to a particular product or service.  An example of this is MANA, which enables holders to buy virtual real estate within the Decentraland metaverse.  In this guide, we offer an in-depth analysis of the best utility tokens to buy right now.  The 11 Best Utility Coins to Buy The list below highlights the 11 best utility tokens that we identified during the research process.  Tamadoge – Overall Best Utility Token to Buy Now Battle Infinity – Low-Cap Crypto That Offers Utility in the Metaverse    Lucky Block – NFT Platform That Offers Access to Competitions and Rewards   DeFi Coin – New DEX That Offers Utility via Staking and Yield Farming  MANA – Native Token of the Decentraland Metaverse World  Ethereum – Utility Token That Backs Thousands of ERC-20 Standard Projects XRP – Provides Utility for the Ripple Interbank Payments Network  BNB – Proprietary Token of the Binance Smart Chain Ecosystem   Basic Attention Token – Incentivization to use the Brave Browser  1inch – DEX Aggregator Offering Traders the Most Favorable Price ApeCoin – In-House Currency in the Otherside Metaverse  As per the list above, the best utility coins come from a variety of crypto niches, from the metaverse and P2E gaming to DeFi yield services.  We discuss each and every utility coin project in more detail in the following sections.  Reviewing the Crypto with the Best Utility  Unlike meme coins – which are largely focused on speculation and hyper, utility tokens have an actual use case.  This means that by holding a utility token, investors can gain exclusive access to the respective project’s products and services.  Ultimately, utility tokens have a much greater chance of surviving the current crypto bear market.  Therefore, we will now take a much closer look at the 11 best utility crypto coins to consider buying right now.  1. Tamadoge – Overall Best Utility Token to Buy Now After completing our comprehensive research process, we concluded that overall, Tamadoge is the best utility token to buy today. This newly launched cryptocurrency ecosystem is building a play-to-earn game. This means that players can win real-world rewards that are paid in TAMA – the utility token that is native to Tamadoge.  This is a perfect example of a utility coin, insofar that players are motivated to engage with the Tamadoge ecosystem. Moreover, those holding TAMA tokens will have access to the Tamaverse – which is the project’s take on the metaverse. Additionally, in order to play the Tamadoge game – which is based on caring, breeding, and battling virtual pets, an NFT must be purchased.  And the only currency that can be used for this goal is TAMA. Another reason why we like Tamadoge as the overall best utility coin is that it recently witnessed one of the best crypto presales of the year. Put simply, the project raised over $19 million from investors, and the TAMA token is now listed on multiple exchanges, including OKX and Uniswap.  Those that opted to buy Tamadoge tokens during the presale have since experienced unprecedented growth. In fact, TAMA has already managed to generate post-ICO gains of 10x, which makes it one of the top trending cryptos in the current bear cycle. Furthermore, according to CoinMarketCap, Tamadoge has a market capitalization of just $44 million as of writing.  As one of the best low-cost cryptos, TAMA potentially offers the most upside potential. Those that missed the presale can also consider buying a Tamadoge NFT, with the collection due to launch in the coming days. Just 21,100 NFTs will ever be sold, and the best price possible is available in the impending launch.  Buy Tamadoge on OKX CEX Buy Tamadoge on OKX DEX 2. Battle Infinity – Low-Cap Crypto That Offers Utility in the Metaverse    Battle Infinity is another low-cap crypto project that recently witnessed one of the best crypto ICOs of 2022. Although Battle Infinity raised a modest $5 million, this represents its hard-cap target. Moreover, the presale was planned for three months, but the campaign sold out in just 24 days. This is even more impressive considering the current bear market.  In terms of its utility, IBAT tokens sit at the heart of the Battle Infinity metaverse – otherwise branded as the ‘multiverse’. This will consist of many play-to-earn games, all of which will take a multiplayer format. The first game to launch in the Battle Infinity multiverse is centered on a conventional fantasy sports league.   Successful players will be rewarded with IBAT tokens. Players can then choose to stake their IBAT for passive income directly on the Battle Infinity platform. Or, players can use the Battle Infinity DEX to swap their IBAT for another token type. IBAT can also be used to buy and sell Battle Infinity NFTs, which offer an enhanced in-game experience.  In terms of its price action, Battle Infinity is trading at $0.003 at the time of writing, which equates to a market capitalization of $10 million. The presale priced IBAT at $0.0015, so this represents growth of 100%. However, IBAT previously touched an all-time high of $0.0055, which translates into growth of over 260% from its presale price.  All in all, IBAT could be one of the best penny cryptocurrencies to add to a utility token portfolio today – especially considering its small market capitalization. Those wishing to learn how to buy Battle Infinity tokens can read our beginner’s guide.  Visit Battle Infinity 3. Lucky Block – NFT Platform That Offers Access to Competitions and Rewards   While Tamadoge and Battle Infinity are the best utility tokens from within the play-to-earn gaming space, Lucky Block is focused on NFT competitions. The concept here is that Lucky Block offers a range of competitions on the blockchain, which can be entered by purchasing and holding a relevant NFT.  For example, a popular competition being run right now offers the chance to win a Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT. As of writing, this NFT carries a floor price is over $100,000, albeit, during the most recent crypto bull run, investors were paying over $1 million. Nonetheless, there are 10,000 NFTs attached to this Lucky Block competition.  Once all 10,000 have sold out, the prize draw will be made. In the meantime, after buying an NFT, holders will receive passive income rewards via the LBLOCK token. Moreover, the rewards are paid indefinitely, long after the competition draw. Other notable competitions being run by Lucky Block as of writing include FIFA World Cup tickets and $1 million worth of Bitcoin.  The LBLOCK token itself is also worth considering from an investment perspective. LBLOCK had a hugely successful ICO process earlier in the year. After raising over $5 million in presale funding, LBLOCk became the fastest cryptocurrency to hit a market capitalization of $1 billion. Those buying this top-rated utility coin now will, however, pay 95% below its previous all-time high.  For more information on how to buy LBLOCK tokens, consider reading our beginner’s guide.  Visit Lucky Block 4. DeFi Coin – New DEX That Offers Utility via Staking and Yield Farming       Another low-cap gem that offers a variety of utility benefits is DeFi Coin. This cryptocurrency is also fairly new, with the project being founded in late 2021. DeFi Coin is the native utility token of the DeFi Swap exchange, which is currently in the final stages of development. The DeFi Swap exchange will offer a range of ways to generate passive income. This includes a user-friendly staking tool that eventually, will support the vast majority of cryptocurrencies across many different blockchain networks. Multiple staking options will be provided, from 30 days up to a year. Alternatively, investors might also consider using DeFi Swap to access its yield farming tool.  This will provide liquidity to the DeFi Swap exchange so that investors can buy and sell tokens without needing access to market participants or traditional order books. In return, liquidity providers will earn a share of the revenue generated from DeFi Swap trading commissions. Additional features are being built into the DeFi Swap, which will add further utility for DeFi Coin.  Another major benefit of investing in DeFi Coin is that as of writing, the project has a market capitalization of under $1 million. Considering how big the decentralized finance industry is expected to grow in the coming years, this offers a highly attractive entry point. DeFi Coin can be purchased from PancakeSwap in exchange for BNB.    Visit DeFi Coin Now 5. MANA – Native Token of the Decentraland Metaverse World       Another area that the best utility coins play a major role is in the metaverse. One of the best metaverse coins in this regard is MANA, which backs the Decentraland ecosystem. As we briefly noted earlier, MANA is the native digital currency of the Decentraland metaverse and it is required to access the many products and services on offer.  For example, one of the most popular aspects of Decentraland is that users can purchase virtual real estate within its metaverse, in exchange for MANA. The price of each plot will vary depending on market conditions and the location within the metaverse. For instance, buying land close to Paris Hilton or Snoop Dogg will come at a huge premium.  Nonetheless, as per the current bear market, there are some great deals to be had. MANA is also used to access play-to-earn games within Decentraland, in addition to buying and selling NFTs. More utility is expected as the metaverse concept becomes more mainstream. In the meantime, MANA can be purchased at a huge discount when c...

OPEC Cut Spurs U.S. Hedging – But Against Lower Oil Prices – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/opec-cut-spurs-u-s-hedging-but-against-lower-oil-prices-reuters/ A model of 3D printed oil barrels is seen in front of displayed stock graph going down in this illustration taken, December 1, 2021. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration/File Photo NEW YORK, Oct 10 (Reuters) – The decision by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies last week to cut oil production has spurred a flurry of activity in the options market – but with more U.S. bettors opting for a bearish stance, data from CME Group showed. OPEC+, as the group is known, decided on Wednesday to cut its target by 2 million barrels per day (bpd), including voluntary production curbs by Saudi Arabia and other nations. Oil futures have risen over 7% since to five-week highs, as the move was seen as putting a floor under the market. However, the U.S. oil options market skewed toward buying of put options, used to either bet on or protect against downside movement. There are several reasons why this can happen, including worry about weaker demand, or because the cheapness of those options made it an opportune time for oil companies to buy to protect against downside. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “I would classify the put buying as hedges,” said Bob Iaccino, chief market strategist and co-founder of Path Trading Partners. “Demand is still expected to be weak and get weaker given the overall economic picture… so it’s just massive, massive hedging in case the downside develops.” Trading volumes for U.S. crude futures puts and calls for November delivery gained over 40% to Wednesday, the day of the OPEC+ meeting, from Tuesday, data from CME Group showed. Volume in puts rose to 25,615 for the U.S. crude futures November contract on Wednesday, 10,922 more than the during the previous session, CME Group said. By contrast, there were 19,473 call options – bets on a higher price – purchased that day. “The put-to-call skew actually moved out in favor of the put after the OPEC decision,” said Bob Yawger, director of energy futures at Mizuho in New York. On Thursday and Friday, volumes in puts totaled 15,579 and 25,771, respectively, while volumes in calls totaled 16,087 and 42,291, CME Group data showed. Trading spiked on Friday after the White House suggested last week it was reviewing its relationship with Saudi Arabia, and as it seeks ways to reduce OPEC’s control over energy prices. In the futures market, crude spreads widened on Friday, with near-term contracts rising at a faster rate than later-dated contracts. That signals renewed worry about current supply, which is more of a bullish indicator. “There is plenty of supply uncertainty going into 2023 and let’s also not forget that there is also a lot of demand uncertainty given the macro outlook,” said Warren Patterson, head of commodities research at ING. The spread between international benchmark Brent expiring in December 2022 versus December 2023 climbed more than 12% to over $13 per barrel on Friday, highest since June, Refinitiv Eikon data showed. Stock Market News Live Updates: Stocks Fall To Start The Week As Chip Rout Drags Nasdaq To Two-Year Low Yahoo Finance
Stock Market News Live Updates: Stocks Fall To Start The Week As Chip Rout Drags Nasdaq To Two-Year Low – Yahoo Finance https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/stock-market-news-live-updates-stocks-fall-to-start-the-week-as-chip-rout-drags-nasdaq-to-two-year-low-yahoo-finance/ U.S. stocks extended a streak of volatile trading on Monday as Wall Street steered into third-quarter earnings season and braced for a batch of inflation reports. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) sank 1.1% to hit a two-year low as a set of fresh restrictions by the Biden administration on China’s access to American technology sent chip stocks tanking and weighed on the broader tech sector. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) slid 0.7% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) fell around 100 points, or 0.3%. The measures imposed on Monday to curb China’s access to semiconductors aim to slow the country’s technological and military advances but deal a further blow to an industry already struggling with weaker revenues as demand slows for computers, smartphones, and other electronic devices. Shares of major chipmakers including Nvidia (NVDA) and AMD (AMD) fell roughly 4% and 2%, respectively. The CBOE Volatility Index (^VIX), which measures short-term expectations for market turbulence, inched closer to the 33 level. And Treasury yields extended their recent climb higher. Oil retreated after surging 17% last week, the largest jump since Russia invaded Ukraine. The moves come after an erratic week that began with a fierce rally and concluded with a sharp sell-off that erased much of the resulting gains. The latest downslide was spurred by a strong September jobs report that confirmed to investors Federal Reserve officials are unlikely to shift away from restrictive monetary policy any time soon. The benchmark S&P 500 index is down 23.6% year to date as of Friday’s close, but nine single trading days comprise that entire decline of 32 total points, according to Nicholas Colas of DataTrek Research. The greater share of down days occurred around Consumer Price Index (CPI) or Federal Reserve-related events, one was prompted by Russia-Ukraine tensions, and two came on the heels of bad corporate earnings releases, he added. In the week ahead, all of those factors are expected to test the U.S. stock market. Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in New York City, U.S., October 7, 2022. REUTERS/Brendan McDermid Investors are gearing up for the flurry of bank earnings that typically mark the start to a new earnings reporting period, with results from JPMorgan (JPM), Citi (C), Wells Fargo (WFC), and Morgan Stanley (MS) all due out. Other companies set to report this week included PepsiCo (PEP) and Delta Air Lines (DAL). Analysts are bracing for a painful earnings season as persistent inflation, higher interest rates, and geopolitical headwinds weigh on companies’ bottom lines. “The bear market will not be over until the deteriorating fundamental picture is more fully discounted,” Morgan Stanley’s top equity strategist Mike Wilson said in a note. Also on Wall Street’s plate is September consumer price data, one of the most pivotal reports ahead of the FOMC’s next policy-setting meeting in November. While the headline reading is expected to moderate again, all eyes will be on the “core” component of the report, which strips out the volatile food and energy categories. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg project core CPI rose to 6.5% from 6.3% over the year, per the latest estimates. “Volatility is going to persist in equity and fixed income markets until there’s a clear indication that inflation is under control,” Peter Essele, head of portfolio management at Commonwealth Financial Network, said in a recent note. — Alexandra Semenova is a reporter for Yahoo Finance. Irish Sportsbook BoyleSports Reportedly Discussing Sale To Another Gaming Operator – Casino.Org News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/irish-sportsbook-boylesports-reportedly-discussing-sale-to-another-gaming-operator-casino-org-news/ Posted on: October 10, 2022, 10:54h.  Last updated on: October 10, 2022, 10:54h. BoyleSports, the go-to sports betting company in Ireland, could soon have a new home. The news comes from Independent.ie, which claims to have an exclusive line on the inside track. A BoyleSports sports betting shop waiting for customers in Ireland. The company is reportedly discussing a sale with another gaming operator. (Image: Irish Times) Negotiations are reportedly already taking place for the company, which the media outlet says is worth “hundreds of millions of euros.” While the deal is mostly under wraps, Entain was mentioned as a company with interest in the acquisition. However, this doesn’t confirm that it’s the target. Acquiring BoyleSports would be significant for any company. It has an established presence in Ireland and the UK, and is working on expansion. This year, it set its sights on the Netherlands and Africa, as well as Canada. BoyleSports Offers Great Potential At the right price, acquiring BoyleSports could be a very lucrative proposition. The company has 340 retail betting establishments in the UK and Ireland, and its expansion into the online space is already beginning to produce rewards. The growth has followed normal progression. BoyleSports is an Irish company that began in 1982. Since then, it expanded into the UK after making several key acquisitions. Evolving with the interest in online gaming and strong market possibilities, it then set out to enter the digital market, where it has begun to grab a foothold. The company, which recently lost former CEO Mark Kemp to DAZN, also announced this year additional expansion plans. It is moving into Kenya and South Africa by next year, taking advantage of significant gaming interest in those markets. With Canada’s expanded gambling industry beginning to show signs of life, BoyleSports has been exploring entry there, as well. It hasn’t confirmed its end game, but has stated that all of the retail and online expansion projects are at the center of its current operations. Should Entain be the company interested in purchasing BoyleSports, it could create a significant power struggle in the UK and Ireland. Flutter Entertainment, the company behind Paddy Power and others, already has a good grasp of the markets. However, Entain would have a global powerhouse of gaming experts to challenge that position. Before finalizing any deal, BoyleSports and its suitor would have to go through the customary regulatory review. This would explore their operations separately, as well as what would happen once they merged. Ireland Gaming Undergoes Transformation The news about the potential sale comes only a month after Ireland made one of its most significant changes related to gaming. The country now has its new Gambling Regulatory Authority (GRA), of which Anne Marie Caufield will be CEO. Ireland has been somewhat of a black sheep in the European Union, unable to pin down its gaming regulations. That changes with the new GRA, although there are no concrete details of what might be coming. One thing that is certain is that new taxes are on the way. Some insiders believe that, once the final numbers are in, the gaming industry could see a reduction in revenue by anywhere from 10% to 16%. This is amid the struggles currently in the UK, which is witnessing meteoric inflation and an uncertain short-term future. It will also, at some point, welcome new gaming regulations, as well. There’s a lot going on that will influence the industry and force businesses to change their tactics.

The blast on the Kerch Bridge — the longest bridge in Europe — collapsed two roadways and reportedly left three people dead. President Vladimir Putin blamed Ukrainian special forces for the the explosion, which he called an “act of terrorism.” Ukrainian officials say retaliatory assaults by Russia killed at least 10 people and struck infrastructure in 12 regions of Ukraine, knocking out electricity and water supplies. Russian Attacks Kill at Least 13 in Zaporizhzhia; Nuclear Plant Temporarily Loses Power Oct 10, 2022 On Sunday, Russian missiles rained down on the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 13 people. This came after the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant temporarily lost its power supply Saturday due to shelling and had to switch on emergency diesel generators to prevent a nuclear disaster. This is 10-year-old Bohdan Pavlenko, who survived Sunday’s attack on Zaporizhzhia. Bohdan Pavlenko: “I heard the sirens and some person next to me screaming. There was no mobile connection. It was horrific. My mother took me under her arm. Then I looked after my little brother and sister. … The Russian Federation, the way it’s doing all of this — special operation? I don’t think that this is a special operation.” In other news from Ukraine, the governor of Donetsk province says mass burial sites have been found in the recently liberated town of Lyman. Where To Keep Your Cruise Card Phone And Cash During A Shore Excursion? Cruise Blog
Where To Keep Your Cruise Card Phone And Cash During A Shore Excursion? Cruise Blog
Where To Keep Your Cruise Card, Phone And Cash During A Shore Excursion? – Cruise Blog https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/where-to-keep-your-cruise-card-phone-and-cash-during-a-shore-excursion-cruise-blog/ One of the best parts about cruising is getting to explore incredible ports throughout your cruise vacation. Each day of your cruise, you’ll be waking up to new destinations and have daily opportunities to experience a new city or country.  When your cruise ship is docked in port, you have a few different options for how you can spend your day ashore. Most people choose to book an excursion to maximize their time in port, while some people choose to venture out on their own. Personally, I like to do a combination of both during my cruise! A few shore excursions can ensure I see everything I want to during my time in port while independent exploration is perfect for certain cities and ports.  Regardless of how you spend your day in port, one common concern from cruisers is how they can properly keep their belongings safe throughout the day. This is very important, as no one wants to lose their phone, cruise card or money during their vacation (or ever!).  Remember, your cruise card is how you make onboard purchases, enter your stateroom and how you will board and disembark the cruise ship at each port. Treat it as your credit card, house key and ID all in one! Unfortunately, there are people who don’t always have your best interest at hand. Also, accidents can unfortunately happen, so you should set yourself up for success in the worst case scenarios.  After extensive traveling, I’ve seen it all – stolen passports, slashed purses and pickpocketed phones right out of the hands of friends and family.  I personally almost lost my purse while exploring Morocco with my husband. While crossing the street, a scooter came right up to the sidewalk where we were walking and the scooter’s passenger grabbed my crossbody and tried to yank it right off my body. Luckily, I was wearing a well-made crossbody during the incident, which made it difficult for the individual to successfully get my purse.  I’ve even slept in the jungle of Senegal with my passport strapped under my pajamas because I was so worried someone would steal it while I slept.  Whether you’re exploring a new city in Europe, snorkeling in the Caribbean or whale watching in Alaska, you should be planning ahead to ensure you can keep your valuables properly secured. Depending on how you spend your day, you’ll want to make sure you pack properly as well.  Here are a few tips on where you can keep your cruise card, phone and cash during a shore excursion.  Watch out for pickpockets If you’re exploring a city while you’re in port on an excursion, you should take a few simple precautions to keep your valuables safe. This can be especially important in busier and bigger cities to avoid pickpockets.  Having a small crossbody is the perfect place to keep your belongings safe throughout your shore excursion. It’s a good idea to have your crossbody in front of you, as having your bag behind you will put you in a vulnerable position.  Having a purse just dangling from your shoulder makes it easier for someone to grab it and run off. When your bag is worn across your body, this makes it much more difficult for a pickpocket to be successful.  It’s best practice to always be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist spots. More than likely, you’ll be visiting the top tourist attractions during your shore excursions; unfortunately, this is where most of the pickpockets pry on huge clumps of tourists. If you can, wear pants or shorts with zippers for added security. Never have anything in your back pockets, as this makes it very easy for pickpockets to target you.  Some prefer to have fanny packs in leu of a crossbody during their shore excursions, which can be a great solution for carrying valuables and keeping money in a safe place. Fanny packs are great options for men and women! When dining at a restaurant, keep your bag within sight or on your lap so someone doesn’t snatch it while you’re eating delicious vacation food.  Those who prefer to wear a backpack, consider using small luggage locks to make your bag more difficult to break into. I used luggage locks throughout my semester abroad and it added some peace of mind. If you find yourself on public transportation, keep your bag or purse on your lap to ensure no one can easily access it.  Staying safe at the beach Cruising and beaching simply go hand-in-hand! Give me a mojito beachside and I am the happiest cruiser. Unsurprisingly, heading to the beach on a shore excursion is one of the most popular Caribbean choices for how to spend the day in port.  In a best case scenario, you will be traveling with a group to the beach where one person could ideally stay back to watch everyone’s belongings. This is probably the best option to ensure your belongings are kept safe.  As someone who loves cruising with my husband, we often find that it’s just the two of us at the beach on an excursion. This can be stressful about what to do with our belongings if we both want to get in the water or go get a drink at the bar.  First, we look to see if anyone from our cruise ship is nearby to ask if they can keep an eye on our things. It’s pretty easy to find other cruise passengers if you can spot the cruise ship towels! If we find someone who looks trustworthy or we recognize someone from the ship, we ask if they can keep an eye on our things.  We will keep our eyes on our belongings periodically if we both choose to go into the ocean together. We always cover our belongings with towels so nothing is out in the open.  Some cruisers even like to bring a small portable safe that they can tether to a chair on the beach. This might be a good solution for those extra concerned about keeping their belongings safe.  If you’re visiting a cruise line’s private island, you might be able to access complimentary lockers to store your belongings. For example, Royal Caribbean offers free lockers for guests visiting their private islands (CocoCay and Labadee). This can be an easy and cost-efficient solution for keeping your cash, phone and cruise card in a safe spot while you enjoy the private island. Pack lightly for your excursion When going ashore, it’s best practice to pack as lightly as possible. Don’t take anything ashore that you absolutely don’t need, as this just increases the likelihood of losing something or having it stolen.   There’s usually no need to bring your fancy jewelry, iPad, laptop, etc while on a shore excursion. Keep these items safely in your stateroom.  I prefer to travel with the bare minimums in my crossbody: my phone, my cruise card, my driver’s license, some cash, 2 credit cards (a no-fee Visa and a back-up) and a debit card (in case of needing more cash). I don’t travel with all of my IDs or cards, as I want to ensure I have back-up options onboard the ship in the worst case scenario.  Some prefer to travel ashore with their passports while cruising. This comes down to personal preference.  Personally, I like to leave my passport on the ship in my stateroom safe (unless it’s required to go ashore in a certain port). In my mind, the risk of my passport getting lost or stolen is more likely than a catastrophic event, like a medical emergency or being left behind.  On the other hand, others swear by traveling in port with their passport in the unlikely event of a medical emergency or worst-case scenario of getting left behind in port.   Either way, make sure your passport is properly secured in your bag or crossbody if you choose to carry this document. If you’re going on a water-intensive excursion It’s very popular for shore excursions on a cruise to include active tours like kayaking, boating, snorkeling, or whale watching.  For these types of excursions where you’ll be on the water or getting wet, consider bringing a waterproof phone case or pouch so you can continue to take great pictures or videos throughout your shore excursion. Waterproof pouches are very popular and even have lanyards to help you keep your phone right around your neck.  A small waterproof storage box could also be another good idea if you want to have your phone locked away safely during a more water-intensive activity like river rafting.  Another low-budget idea is to bring a Ziploc baggie on your shore excursion to protect your phone, cash and cruise card from water damage. We love having Ziplock baggies on our cruises for a multitude of purposes, and keeping our valuables safe from water damage is one of the biggest reasons.  Utilizing a Ziploc baggie is an easy and cost-efficient solution that we recommend to all cruisers.

Former Fed Chair Bernanke Shares Nobel For Research On Banks – Business News – Castanet.net https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/former-fed-chair-bernanke-shares-nobel-for-research-on-banks-business-news-castanet-net/ Photo: The Canadian Press Former U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke, who put his academic expertise on the Great Depression to work reviving the American economy after the 2007-2008 financial crisis, won the Nobel Prize in economic sciences along with two other U.S.-based economists for their research into the fallout from bank failures. Bernanke was recognized Monday along with Douglas W. Diamond and Philip H. Dybvig. The Nobel panel at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm said the trio’s research had shown “why avoiding bank collapses is vital.” With their findings in the early 1980s, the laureates laid the foundations for regulating financial markets, the panel said. “Financial crises and depressions are kind of the worst thing that can happen to the economy,” said John Hassler of the Committee for the Prize in Economic Sciences. “These things can happen again. And we need to have an understanding of the mechanism behind those and what to do about it. And the laureates this year provide that.” Bernanke, 68, who was Fed chair from early 2006 to early 2014 and is now with the Brookings Institution in Washington, examined the Great Depression of the 1930s, showing the danger of bank runs — when panicked people withdraw their savings — and how bank collapses led to widespread economic devastation. Before Bernanke, economists saw bank failures as a consequence, not a cause, of economic downturns. Diamond, 68, based at the University of Chicago, and Dybvig, 67, who is at Washington University in St. Louis, showed how government guarantees on deposits can prevent a spiraling of financial crises. “Probably the most gratifying thing for us is that policymakers actually seem to understand it, and the insights that we had, which are pretty simple, could be used in the actual financial crisis,” Diamond told The Associated Press in Chicago. He added that he was “very happy” and “quite surprised” to get the call. When it comes to the global economic turmoil created by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine, Diamond said in a call with the Nobel panel that the financial system is “much, much less vulnerable” to crises because of memories of the 2000s collapse and improved regulation. “The problem is that these vulnerabilities of the fear of runs and dislocations and crises can show up anywhere in the financial sector. It doesn’t have to be commercial banks,” he said. The trio’s research took on real-world significance when investors sent the financial system into a panic during fall 2008. Bernanke, then head of the Fed, teamed up with the U.S. Treasury Department to prop up major banks and ease a shortage of credit, the lifeblood of the economy. He slashed short-term interest rates to zero, directed the Fed’s purchases of Treasury and mortgage investments and set up unprecedented lending programs. Collectively, those steps calmed investors and fortified big banks. They also pushed long-term interest rates to historic lows and led to fierce criticism of Bernanke, particularly from some 2012 Republican presidential candidates, that the Fed was hurting the value of the dollar and running the risk of igniting inflation later. The Fed’s actions under Bernanke extended the authority of the central bank into unprecedented territory. They weren’t able to prevent the longest and most painful recession since the 1930s. But in hindsight, the Fed’s moves were credited with rescuing the banking system and avoiding another depression. And Bernanke’s Fed established a precedent for the central bank to respond with speed and force to economic shocks. When COVID-19 slammed the U.S. economy in early 2020, the Fed, under Chair Jerome Powell, quickly cut short-term interest rates back to zero and pumped money into the financial system. The aggressive intervention — along with massive government spending — quickly ended the downturn and triggered a powerful economic recovery. But the quick comeback also came at a cost: Inflation began rising rapidly last year and now is close to 40-year highs, forcing the Fed to reverse course and raise rates to cool the economy. Central banks around the world are taking similar steps as inflation erodes consumers’ spending power. In a groundbreaking 1983 paper, Bernanke explored the role of bank failures in deepening and lengthening the Great Depression of the 1930s. Before that, economists cast blame on the Fed for not printing enough money to support the economy as it sank. Bernanke agreed but found that the shortage of money could not explain why the depression was so devastating and lasted so long. The problem, he found, was the collapse of the banking system. Panicked savers pulled money out of rickety banks, which then could not make the loans that kept the economy growing. “The result,’’ the Nobel committee wrote, “was the worst global recession in modern history.’’ Simon Johnson, an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who has written about the financial crisis, said Bernanke “really shifted the attention onto banks and pointed out that it was the declining credit of the ‘30s that caused the trouble.” Bernanke’s insights, Johnson said, led policymakers to ask: “’What do we need to do to prevent the banks from collapsing? And let’s do whatever it takes.’ That is a very powerful idea in the policy world.’’ The economics award capped a week of Nobel Prize announcements in medicine, physics, chemistry, literature and peace. They carry a cash award of 10 million Swedish kronor (nearly $900,000) and will be handed out on Dec. 10. Unlike the other prizes, the economics award wasn’t established in Alfred Nobel’s will of 1895 but by the Swedish central bank in his memory. The first winner was selected in 1969.

Well Guide You Through Your Journey Happy Pear Twins Go Global And Say New App Will Help Make Healthy Living Easy Independent.ie
‘We’ll Guide You Through Your Journey’ – Happy Pear Twins Go Global And Say New App Will Help Make Healthy Living Easy – Independent.ie https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/well-guide-you-through-your-journey-happy-pear-twins-go-global-and-say-new-app-will-help-make-healthy-living-easy-independent-ie/ ‘The Happy Pear’ twins say having a healthy lifestyle is a lot easier than many people think, as they launch their new app today. hile they will guide fans through everything from stretches to cardiac health, they will also be covering everything from having a happy heart to tackling the somewhat taboo subject of erectile dysfunction, in a course called the ‘Happy Hard-on’. The advocates for a vegan lifestyle, who started off with a small shop in Greystones in 2004, now run a company employing nearly 100 staff with their own range of 70 products in Irish supermarkets. Having built up a huge fanbase in Ireland, the ambitious pair have now turned their attentions to the digital world with their new app, ‘The Happy Pear: Healthy Living’, which is available on iOS and Android. The sea-swimming siblings (42), who already have the Happy Pear podcast and a YouTube channel, told Independent.ie that it’s about developing their local community of supporters to a more international level. “We have been building the app for the past 22 months. We have had people from 120 different countries through our courses before so it’s great to have that membership base. We want to really build a community around healthy living and helping to support people to become healthier, happier versions of themselves,” said co-founder David Flynn. “We’ve been doing healthy eating courses and partnering with medical experts for the last 12 years so it’s really the culmination of that. The big thing is we’ve got courses with all our experts.” The new digital release will feature 200 plant-based recipes and meal plans alongside over 150 hours of content from doctors, dieticians, cardiologists, performance psychologists and chefs. Close The Happy Pear brothers David (left) and Steve Flynn. Photo: Gerry Mooney The Happy Pear brothers David (left) and Steve Flynn. Photo: Gerry Mooney The app will, of course, feature videos of the twins themselves as they share their love of the healthy lifestyle with their fans. “The big USP [unique selling point] is that me and Steve will be people’s ‘health guides’ through the journey,” said David. “We’ll do a 20-minute rise and shine class which is stretching and a bit of breath work. This morning, I did a session on healthy snacking so there will be daily classes with us.” Among their expert contributors will be urologist Dr Aaron Spitz. “We will be releasing a course called the ‘Happy Hard-on’ so that’s going to be part of it,” added David.  “This course is on erectile dysfunction as it’s not that type of thing that men talk to each other about but it’s the kind of thing they go crawling around the internet for. We’ve got nearly four million views on these two videos we did on it. “Having run a Happy Heart course for years with a cardiologist, he’ll always say that erectile dysfunction is like the canary in the coalmine. It’s the first indicator of cardio-vascular disease so if you’ve got inhibited blood flow anywhere in your body, you may have restricted blood flow throughout your body.” Last April the pair had to issue an apology for releasing a video featuring “factually wrong” information on the vegan diet and its link to breast cancer prevention. The post on their account claimed that some of the main risk factors for cancer included high levels of saturated fats, dairy products, and animal products in the diet. It also alleged that “mushrooms reduce your risk of breast cancer” and advocated eating soy products several times daily. We have been building the app for the past 22 months. We have had people from 120 different countries through our courses before so it’s great to have that membership base So how careful do they have to be to ensure the quality of the medical information they provide on their new app is 100pc accurate? “Yeah, the experts can really focus on their expertise and then we can focus on ours which is really the food and the lifestyle aspect,” said David. “And then when it gets into areas which we’re certainly not specialised in, we do have these partners who studied and practised for years as heads of their field so it gives a good, encompassing view on health. “It’s not just talking about food and lifestyle, there are these medical experts supporting people on their journeys as well.” To date, he said they have had about 80,000 people complete their courses. They also partnered with a consultant gastro-enterologist, Dr Alan Desmond, to run a course in Devon attended by 100 medical professionals. “That was with doctors, dieticians, consultants and we were pretty nervous running it,” he said. “We got an incredible result as 98pc of them said they would recommend it to their clients. It was a four-week course and on the back of it, the NHS is developing a similar course to roll it out to encourage more lifestyle medicine.” They believe that living a healthier lifestyle is “not rocket science” and say the average Irish person only eats 20 grams of fibre daily when the recommended amount is 30 grams. “It’s just about trying to cut out the junk which is very challenging in the modern food environment. Most people know how to be healthier – they know they should eat more veg, move more, have good relations, sleep well. I could ask my six-year-old and he’d tell me that too. “The biggest challenge is how we can create an environment or a system that supports these healthy choices,” said Steve. The pair have also set their sights on the UK, and launching their range of products over there will be a priority for them in 2023.

(Photo by Barry Chin/The Boston Globe via Getty Images) The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is planning to launch in-person sports betting in the state in late January, just in time for the Super Bowl. The commission set a timeline at a meeting Friday, aiming to start in-person sports betting in late January at casinos and mobile sports betting in early March. The commissioners couldn’t agree on a timeline at a meeting the day prior, and said on Friday that the target dates may be too aggressive and could still be pushed back. Republican Gov. Charlie Baker signed a bill in August legalizing betting on professional and collegiate sports, joining more than 30 other states, including several neighbors. Baker said that he supports it because state residents are already traveling to Rhode Island, New Hampshire, New York and Connecticut to place legal wagers. The U.S. Supreme Court in 2018 ruled that banning sports betting was unconstitutional. The gaming commission released a survey Friday that it’s requiring companies applying for a sports wagering operator license and vendors to those potential licensees to complete. The survey seeks specific company information before the full applications are due.

Questions Meta Needs To Answer About The Metaverse At Connect – Engadget https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/questions-meta-needs-to-answer-about-the-metaverse-at-connect-engadget/ Just under a year ago, Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company he founded as a Harvard undergrad would change its name to Meta. “From now on, we’re going to be metaverse-first, not Facebook-first,” he said during a virtual keynote at the company’s Connect event. Zuckerberg has spent the year since hyping all things metaverse. He’s shown off dystopian VR offices, looked at pictures of space in VR with Neil deGrasse Tyson and persuaded more than one professional athlete to play VR games with him. He went on Joe Rogan’s podcast to extol the virtues of mixed martial arts and virtual reality. Rogan even got an early demo of Meta’s new high-end VR headset, which is expected to launch during Connect. But the metaverse has also proved to be a massive money pit. In the last year alone, the company has lost billions of dollars on its metaverse ambitions, and the trend is unlikely to reverse any time soon. The company, which last year announced plans to hire 10,000 workers in Europe solely to build its metaverse, is now cutting staff and reorganizing teams. So at this year’s Connect, which kicks off at 10 AM PT tomorrow with a keynote from Zuckerberg, the stakes feel even higher. And we still have a lot of questions about what it really means to be a “metaverse company.” It’s perhaps the most obvious issue, but in the nearly a year since Zuckerberg first attempted to articulate what a metaverse is, it’s still not very clear. Last year, Zuckerberg described it as “an embodied internet where you’re in the experience, not just looking at it.” The company’s website currently says the metaverse is “the next evolution in social connection and the successor to the mobile internet.” But what those words mean to most people is fuzzy at best. “Outside of early adopters and tech-savvy people, there’s still confusion as to what is the metaverse and what we’re going to be doing with it,” says Carolina Milanesi, a consumer analyst with Creative Strategies. That means Zuckerberg will not only need to offer an understandable definition, but an idea of what it will mean for the billions of people already on his platform. Which brings us to… Can it ever look cool? Meta This may not seem like the most important problem facing Zuckerberg’s vision for a mobile internet-replacing metaverse, but it’s one that could go a long way toward building the hype he so desperately craves. Because, right now, Meta’s metaverse looks… kind of crappy. This was never more apparent than when Zuckerberg very earnestly shared a capture from Horizon Worlds of his avatar in front of a VR Eiffel Tower and Sagrada Familia that could generously be described as flat and amateurish. He quickly followed up with a new avatar, and promised better graphics for Horizon Worlds would be coming at Connect. But Meta will need to show more than just graphics that look like they were created this millennium. Ideally, it would show a metaverse experience that actually looks cool. Or at least one that could appeal to people already spending time in Roblox or Fortnite or other metaverse-adjacent spaces. Milanesi adds that it would help to show off metaverse experiences that go beyond just having meetings or hanging out with strangers in VR. “I think there are other use cases either on the education side or on the entertainment side, that might be a bit more interesting,” she says. However, early signs suggest we shouldn’t expect drastic improvements to Horizon Worlds. According to a recent report from The Verge, the app is so buggy that the company is struggling to get its own employees to use it consistently. How will it get creators and third-parties on board? But that brings up another issue: for all of Zuckerberg’s talk about interoperability and making the metaverse an open ecosystem, Meta has so far shown little progress when it comes to bringing outside developers or other companies into its vision in a meaningful way. They’ve also already alienated many creators and would-be early adopters with a 48-percent commission on sales of virtual items in Horizon Worlds. For a company that has made Apple’s “App Store Tax” a central talking point, and has made investing in creators one of its top priorities, it’s no surprise that a high take feels like a slap in the face to creators. Meta How will it handle harassment, misinformation and other harms? Considering Meta’s track record on unintended harms, the company has said surprisingly little about how it plans to address these issues in the metaverse. The company has given cursory nods to trust and safety in the Metaverse — Meta policy chief Nick Clegg has talked about defining standards for the metaverse — but so far the company seems to be borrowing from the same playbook it’s always used. Already, this is more than a theoretical problem. Meta added a “Personal Boundary” feature in February, billing it as a way for people to protect their personal space while in VR. But that update only came after reports of groping in the metaverse had already gone viral. While that update may address one form of harassment, others have noted it could also encourage other disturbing behaviors, like encircling users in an effort to virtually “gang up” on them. It also shows that Meta is still largely reactive when it comes to safety issues: spinning up new features and quick fixes in response to a bad news cycle rather than launching with them already in place. What about AR and non-headset enabled experiences? We’re expecting Zuckerberg to talk a lot about virtual reality — the company is launching its newest headseat at Connect — but it’s a lot less clear how augmented reality fits into the company’s current plans. Meta has teased AR glasses, but those are likely at least two years away. And without glasses, much of Meta’s work on AR is limited to in-app effects for Instagram and Facebook, which are popular but definitely not part of any kind of metaverse. And it’s still not at all clear that Meta has a plan for integrating its existing social platforms into the metaverse. In a recent interview with Protocol, Zuckerberg suggested the company was thinking about it, but stopped short of giving any kind of idea as to how this may work. “For Horizon, making it so that you can create a world and share it on Facebook or Instagram, and people can just jump into it from there — that’s going to be pretty valuable,” he said. But, he added, “we need to be careful about not making it primarily a mobile experience.” The reason, he said, is because he wants the metaverse to be about new platforms and technologies, not simply an extension of the mobile products that already exist. But the fact is the market for VR headsets is still tiny compared with the number of people who use Facebook and Instagram. And if he wants more of them onboard, they should be able to experience the metaverse in some form with the devices they already own. James Bond: The Best Action Scenes From The Franchise Ranked MovieWeb
James Bond: The Best Action Scenes From The Franchise Ranked MovieWeb
James Bond: The Best Action Scenes From The Franchise, Ranked – MovieWeb https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/james-bond-the-best-action-scenes-from-the-franchise-ranked-movieweb/ The James Bond films are known for many things: exotic locales, beautiful women, awesome gadgets, and memorable villains. For a long time, if you wanted a peak spectacle, you went to a James Bond movie. From car chases, ski chases, boat chases, or any kind of chase, the films have provided ample amounts of jaw-dropping action scenes. But which action scenes from the franchise are the best? Which ones have either the best fighting choreography or are shot so wonderfully that we’ll never forget them? Well, here are some of the best ones. 6/6 Bond vs Patrice – Skyfall (2012) Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing This one makes the list solely for Roger Deakins’ mindblowingly fantastic cinematography. Seriously, how the hell did he lose the Oscar for this? The sequence is set in Shanghai, where Bond has tracked the assassin Patrice. After seeing him assassinate a man viewing a painting from a building away, Bond’s cover is blown when Patrice spots his reflection in glass and the fight is on. There’s a few quick cuts, but most of the fight is one continuous shot, with both fighters appearing completely in black, almost impossible to tell who is who. Add some bright blue lights in the background, and you get a fight scene where every frame is a painting. The fight itself isn’t too long, but who cares when it looks this incredible? 5/6 Bond and Paloma Team Up – No Time To Die (2021) Sony No Time To Die has some very big problems, but luckily, its action sequences aren’t one of them. The pre-credits sequence with the Aston Martin is great, and the fight in the Norway forest is wonderfully tense, but there’s a very good reason the one scene in the movie everyone can agree is amazing is Bond and Paloma teaming up to kick some butt in Santiago, Cuba. Bond is trying to capture a scientist named Valdo Obruchev at a Spectre party. However, chaos breaks out, and the nanobots released in the party kill all of Spectre instead of 007. Bond gets a few bad guys here and there, but all the best moments go to Paloma. Whether she’s wielding pistols, machine guns, or kicking people, she looks incredible doing it, and not just because she’s in one of the most beautiful gowns any Bond girl has ever worn. The cherry on top is Bond and Paloma making drinks in the middle of the fight, then going right back to the action. Can’t get more Bond-like than that. 4/6 Midair Fight – Moonraker (1979) Distributed by United Artists It took eighty-eight jumps and almost five weeks to film this sequence. The result? One of the best action scenes in the franchise. This fight happens in the pre-credits, with Bond flying back to England when both pilot and stewardess jump out of the plane, leaving Bond without a parachute. Bond jumps out, catches up with the pilot, steals his parachute, but who comes parachuting after him? Why, Jaws, of course! Bond bests the hulking henchman, who crash lands on top of a circus tent. Admittedly, the ending is a little goofy with Jaws flapping his arms, but everything else about the sequence is phenomenal. It still holds up to this day, too. It truly is one of the most impressive midair fights ever filmed. 3/6 Kobe Docks Chase – You Only Live Twice (1967) Distributed by United Artists Sean Connery’s fifth film takes place entirely in Japan. He and his ally, Aki, travel to Kobe to shadow a tanker named the Ning-Po, which has somehow dropped off cargo between Japan and China despite never docking anywhere along the way. Scores of henchman discover our heroes and the chase is on. There is so much coming together so wonderfully in this sequence, especially John Barry’s score, which times perfectly with gunfire or Bond evading a bad guy. The highlight of the sequence is without a doubt Bond running on the rooftop of a building as henchmen pop out every door trying to chase him down. The camera panning back to show just how big the roof is and how many baddies Bond’s up against, all punctuated by the music of Nancy Sinatra’s wonderful title song, really helps elevate the whole chase. Admittedly, it ends with a henchman knocking Bond out from behind, but that’s really par for the course for him, if we’re being completely honest. 2/6 Train Fight – From Russia With Love (1963) Distributed by United Artists Live and Let Die, The Spy Who Loved Me, Octopussy, Goldeneye, Skyfall, Spectre. What do they all have in common? They all had fights on a train. However, not one of those train fights can outdo the very first time Bond duked it out with someone on a train in From Russia With Love. In this case, Bond’s opponent is Red Grant, one of the best henchmen the franchise has ever seen. The train in question is the Orient Express, which as any Agatha Christie fan can tell you, has seen some murder in its day. The fight begins when Grant tries to open Bond’s briefcase, unaware that it releases tear gas when opened like a normal one. That gives Bond the opening he needs to get Grant’s gun away from him. What follows is a very up-close, in-your-face fight. Having it set in a train compartment really limits the space to move around, allowing for a very vicious duel that ends with Bond stabbing Grant in the arm and strangling him with his own garrotte watch. Brutal? Yes. One of the best fight scenes in the franchise? Also yes. 1/6 Parkour Chase – Casino Royale (2006) Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing How do you make a parkour chase look good? Well… it helps when the guy being chased is played by Sebastien Foucan, one of the founding fathers of parkour. The sequence is set in Madagascar, with Bond pursuing a bomb maker through a constriction site, then an embassy. Every second of this chase scene is incredible and honestly, it’s one of the best action scenes ever filmed. Not only that, but we get some character development for Bond in it, too. Our bomb maker moves with the grace of a ballerina as he dodges everything to escape from Bond. Bond literally punches through drywall to get to him, heavily emphasizing the “Bond is blunt instrument” theme the movie is going for. It’s a flawless sequence and truly the best action scene in the entire franchise.

Prosecutors Raid Three Bithumb ‘Affiliates’ As Shareholder Scrutiny Intensifies – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/prosecutors-raid-three-bithumb-affiliates-as-shareholder-scrutiny-intensifies-cryptonews/ Source: Dennizn/Adobe A number of South Korean firms related to the crypto exchange Bithumb – including the firm that owns a controlling share of its stock – have been raided by the prosecution service on embezzlement charges. Per MBC, officers searched the offices of Vidente, a publicly listed video equipment-making company that owns a majority 34% tranche of Bithumb’s shares. They also raided INBIOGEN, a footwear and accessories producer, and Bucket STUDIO, a firm that produces entertainment-related contents. The media outlet added that executives from the firms are being investigated on suspicion of embezzling company funds. While none of these companies appears to have a link with the crypto sector, they are believed to be owned by Kang Jong-hoon, a man widely believed to be the owner and “secret” chairman” of Bithumb. Kang has reportedly been attempting to sell Bithumb for over a year after acquiring the exchange – and the other three companies – back in 2020. Some firms have also enquired about the possibility of buying Vidente, a move that would grant them control over Bithumb. Bithumb trading volumes. (Source: CoinGecko) A leading South Korean media outlet earlier this month published a comprehensive exposé of Kang earlier this month, alleging that he had appointed the older sister of his celebrity girlfriend, the actress Park Min-young, as an INBIOGEN director. Park’ sister has recently stepped down from her role at INBIOGEN, but prosecutors appear to believe that financial wrongdoings may be afoot at the companies. Officers removed “accounting-related” documents and digital data from the three firms. Prosecutors stated that the crypto exchange Bithumb was currently not part of their investigations.   Who Is Bithumb’s Biggest Shareholder? Kang is a somewhat mysterious figure in the South Korean crypto industry – and does not have a background in IT. His business card reportedly refers to him as the Chairman of Vidente, INBIOGEN, Bucket STUDIO, and the Bithumb affiliate Bithumb Live. The exposé’s authors provided testimony from unnamed sources who claimed Kang has links to the underworld – as well as a fleet of luxury cars, all of which are registered in the names of friends or family members. Park’s representatives have confirmed that she was romantically involved with Kang, but have claimed she has since broken off the relationship.

S&P 500 Falls As Investors Weigh Upcoming Earnings Reports, Inflation Data – CNBC https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/sp-500-falls-as-investors-weigh-upcoming-earnings-reports-inflation-data-cnbc/ Stocks wavered Monday morning as investors look ahead to key earnings and inflation reports that will shed light on the U.S. economy after a shaky week for markets. The S&P 500 fell 0,42%, dragged down by falling semiconductors such as Onsemi and Qualcomm, as well as dips in major tech names Apple and Microsoft. The Dow Jones Industrial Average ticked up 4 points, or 0.04%, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.84%, also weighed down by a slump in chip and technology stocks. Shares of Merck rose more than 3% after being upgraded by Guggenheim. Market observers generally consider the week ahead as the kickoff to earnings season, with four of the world’s largest banks – JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, Morgan Stanley and Citi – reporting Friday. PepsiCo, Delta and Domino’s are also among companies reporting next week. Inflation will also take center stage as new monthly Consumer Price Index data comes Thursday morning. “The direction of the stock market is likely to be lower because either the economy and corporate profits are going to slow meaningfully or the Fed is going to have to raise rates even higher and keep them higher for longer,” said Chris Zaccarelli, chief investment officer at Independent Advisor Alliance, on Friday. “Given the conditions that we are operating under, we believe it’s prudent to begin preparing for a recession,” he added. While the bond market is closed, futures on the 10-year Treasury note were higher in Monday trading indicating yields will continue their march higher on Tuesday. Yields move inversely to prices. Markets whiplashed last week, starting with a relief rally that pushed the S&P 500 up more than 5% in its largest two-day gain since 2020. That rally unwound when jobs data came in stronger than expected, signaling further rate hikes, and OPEC+’s decision to slash oil supply rattled investors. When trading ended Friday, the S&P was up 1.5% on the week. The Dow and Nasdaq were up 1.5% and 0.7%, respectively. Still, the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq had the first positive week in the last four. All remain down substantially so far in 2022, however, and the Nasdaq is less than 1% away from its 52-week low. Last week brought heightened concerns that corporate earnings will show the ugly side of a surging dollar as Levi Strauss became the latest to cut guidance due to sliding international sales. December wheat futures contracts climb as Russia steps up Ukraine missile attacks December wheat futures rallied 4.6% Monday morning to a high of $9.245 a bushel (60 pounds of wheat) after Russian missile attacks struck more than 10 cities in Ukraine overnight, raising concern that exports will be hurt. The Teucrium Wheat Fund is ahead 3.3% premarket while the Invesco DB Agriculture Fund is higher by 1.3%. December gold and silver contracts were trading at one-week lows, with the VanEck Gold Miners ETF Gold ETF and Global X Silver Miners ETF down between 1.3% and 1.8% in early trading. First Majestic Silver, Harmony Gold and Hecla Mining fell about 2%. The dollar index is on pace for a fourth straight advance, with the euro falling as low as 0.968 against the dollar. — Scott Schnipper and Gina Francolla Dollar strength likely to be key in upcoming earnings The strength of the U.S. dollar is likely to be an important point coming up in earnings, according to Chris Larkin, managing director of trading at E*Trade from Morgan Stanley. “The last earnings season of the year is kicking off following a week where—in typical 2022 trading fashion—there was no shortage of eyebrow-raising price moves,” Larkin wrote in a Monday note. “Despite pulling back to a two-week low last Tuesday, the US dollar index bounced to end last week up more than 17% for the year, and not too far below its 20-year high.” “We may hear more in the coming weeks on the pressures an exceptionally strong dollar can have on US exports and thus, earnings of US companies, but dollar strength could also play a role in getting the Fed to “back off” from its tightening policy,” he added. “Though even if continued dollar strength eventually contributes to the Fed switching from raising rates to cutting them, the timing of such a pivot remains uncertain, and might not change the downward trajectory of corporate earnings.” —Carmen Reinicke Today’s notable analyst calls: Merck, Etsy and more CNBC Pro subscribers can get the lowdown on the biggest calls of the day coming out of Wall Street. Calls from Monday and over the weekend that investors are taking note of include: Goldman: Etsy’s marketplace structure makes it unique shielded from supply and demand changes, making it a buy. Guggenheim: Merck earns back its buy rating through growing key product sales and positive movement on trials. Goldman: Kraft Heinz was upgraded to buy, while Procter & Gamble downgraded to neutral, as retail companies feel impacts of foreign exchange unevenly. UBS: Ford and General Motors were both downgraded as cars become less attractive to squeezed consumers. Read the highlights here. — Alex Harring Used car prices see first annual decline in more than two years Used vehicle prices, a key driver of inflation over the past year or so, could be showing signs of letting up. Prices in September dropped 0.1% from a year ago, according to the Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index. That’s the first negative 12-month reading for the index since May 2020 and indication that a sector that had been heavily impacted by pandemic-related spending could be seeing some relief. In the summer of 2021, for instance, used vehicle prices had been rising at a pace of more than 10% a month. A dearth of new vehicles had pushed buyers into the used market, sending prices skyrocketing. However, in recent months, prices have receded. The Bureau of Labor Statistics, for instance, reported a 0.1% month-over-month decline in August. Markets will get a look at fresh inflation figures Thursday when the BLS releases September’s consumer price index. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones expect headline CPI to show a 0.3% monthly increase and an 8.1% annual gain. —Jeff Cox Fed unlikely to pivot soon, El-Erian says The Federal Reserve is probably not anywhere near a pivot from raising interest rates to cutting them, according to Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic adviser of Allianz. “Can they stop, can they pivot? No they cannot,” El-Erian said on CNBC’s Squawk Box Monday morning. “They cannot because the data does not give them enough of a green light, but importantly their credibility has been hit very hard.” He added that because of this, it’s likely that the Fed will overtighten and lead to a U.S. recession. “They’ve gotten themselves into this hole and unfortunately they don’t know how to get out of this hole,” he said. “There’s no ladder out of this hole.” —Carmen Reinicke Bond market closed for Columbus Day Monday could see light volume with many Wall Street traders off for Columbus Day. The U.S. stock market is open Monday, but the bond market is closed. On last year’s Columbus Day, the SPDR S&P 500 Trust traded about 65 million times. That is lower than any day in September or October of this year. While lower volume can sometimes make for a sleepy trading day, it could also contribute to outsized stock moves, as the market could be more susceptible to news events that drive knee-jerk reactions. — Jesse Pound Rivian shares shed 10% after company recalls nearly all of its vehicles Rivian Automotive shares dropped nearly 10% in premarket trading after the EV startup said it will recall nearly all of its vehicles due to a possible issue of a loose fastener that could make a driver lose steering control. Hill Country Residents Helpless As Developer Advances Wastewater Plan San Antonio Report
Hill Country Residents Helpless As Developer Advances Wastewater Plan San Antonio Report
Hill Country Residents Helpless As Developer Advances Wastewater Plan – San Antonio Report https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/hill-country-residents-helpless-as-developer-advances-wastewater-plan-san-antonio-report/ After a summer of intense drought, Helotes Creek hardly holds a puddle. But Grey Forest residents Susan Beavin and Jenn Nottingham say just a couple of years ago it was full of clear, rushing water.  “We swam all summer,” Beavin said, while leading a walk down a nature trail along the creek in northwest Bexar County. If national developer Lennar Homes has its way, the residents say, the creek will someday flow constantly — with treated wastewater from a plant built to serve its proposed 2,900-home subdivision in Helotes Canyon. Swimming could remain a memory. The Miami-based homebuilder recently applied for a permit from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality that would allow it to discharge 1 million gallons of treated wastewater into Helotes Creek every single day. Treated wastewater today is cleaner than it was a generation ago, and some rivers, including the San Antonio River, benefit from the addition. SAWS discharges enough treated wastewater into its namesake river to keep it flowing all the way to the coast, even during drought.  But you can’t drink treated wastewater, and you can’t swim in the San Antonio River.  Because Helotes Creek runs over the Edwards Aquifer contributing zone, residents worry about the quality of the water treatment, and whether it, along with increased stormwater runoff from the development itself, could negatively impact the aquifer’s water quality. Lennar Homes, they say, already has a muddy record when it comes to environmental stewardship in the Hill Country, citing an agreement affecting a Bulverde development the homebuilder violated. A Lennar Homes representative said via email that the company declined to comment. Also because of the company’s track record, residents say they worry Lennar will not abide by concessions it negotiated with the San Antonio Water System, designed to reduce the environmental impact of the development. They also fear that if TCEQ grants this permit, other homebuilders could seek to build wastewater treatment plants that discharge into area creeks, increasing the likelihood of flooding in Helotes Canyon and further risking the purity of the aquifer. And while residents have little faith in Lennar, they have even less in TCEQ’s willingness to hold this homebuilder or others to account. “TCEQ doesn’t actually do anything,” Nottingham said. “We’re a property-rights state and the developers own the property. That’s what they care about.” A year-long battle It’s been an ongoing battle for residents. Lennar Homes approached SAWS last year seeking a utility service agreement to supply water for a proposed 2,900 homes on 1,160 acres once part of the historic Guajolote Ranch just outside of Grey Forest. Lennar Homes is seeking a permit from the TCEQ to discharge up to a million gallons a day into Helotes Creek, which runs over the Edwards Aquifer contributing zone. Credit: Courtesy / Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance While the Guajolote tract is within SAWS’ water service area, it is outside the utility’s wastewater service area. That means SAWS cannot tell the developer how to handle its wastewater, although it can offer direction. SAWS offered Lennar four options for how the company might handle it, including two where the homebuilder would use SAWS as its service provider. Nearby residents and environmental groups urged SAWS to recommend septic systems as a way to further limit density on the property. Ultimately, Lennar Homes chose to go the wastewater treatment route. In February, SAWS approved an agreement for the development that included nine concessions Lennar Homes must meet, including limiting impervious cover to 30% of the property, setting aside 50% as open space and hiring an “A-level” wastewater operator to manage the wastewater treatment plant. During the process, SAWS board member Amy Hardberger lamented that the utility must provide water service to any developer that requests it within the utility’s territory, regardless of the environmental implications of those developments. While SAWS can seek concessions from developers, it cannot deny service. If Lennar breaks any of the concessions it agreed to, SAWS could take legal action against the developer including cutting the developer’s access to water, Tracey Lehmann, SAWS’ director of engineering, told the San Antonio Report. Increased risk of flooding Neighbors’ concerns about treated wastewater discharged into Helotes Creek potentially impacting the aquifer’s quality are based on a study performed by former Southwest Research Institute technical advisor and project manager Ron Green. Green led a two-year-long computer model research effort at the institute to evaluate the impact different types of wastewater disposal facilities built in the Hill Country could have on the Edwards Aquifer. His findings, published in 2020, modeled how pumping treated sewage in the Helotes Creek Watershed could affect the Edwards Aquifer. The study found that any type of wastewater system could “significantly degrade the watershed and the quality of water recharging the Edwards Aquifer.” Green told the San Antonio Report that building more homes and paving more roads would increase downstream flooding, likely affecting residents of Helotes Canyon, including Grey Forest. “If you keep developing in the source areas for the [Edwards] … you’re going to continue to load up the [aquifer] with stuff that you don’t want in the water,” Green said. If TCEQ approves the permit, “it will impress and empower others to [build in this area], and then you’re really going to start compounding the impact.” Lennar’s Hill Country history Lennar Homes doesn’t have the cleanest track record when it comes to sticking with its environmental agreements in the Hill Country, residents say. In 2015, Lennar applied to TCEQ for a wastewater permit to serve its 4S Ranch development in Bulverde — 1,880 homes on 780 acres between Stahl Lane and Smithson Valley Road. The permit would allow it to pump up to 480,000 gallons of treated sewage per day into Lewis Creek. Both the Greater Edwards Aquifer Alliance and the Bulverde Neighborhood Alliance contested the permit application, worried about how the wastewater would affect the aquifer, because Lewis Creek feeds into Cibolo Creek, which recharges the Edwards Aquifer. In 2016, TCEQ granted the application, and the parties came to a settlement agreement stipulating, among other things, that Lennar Homes would reuse the treated wastewater for irrigation, to ensure there would be no runoff. The agreement also required Lennar Homes to limit impervious cover to 35% of the development, use a responsible third party to run the wastewater treatment plant and develop a stormwater drainage plan that protected neighboring property owners. In October 2019, Lennar Homes violated its agreement and the discharge permit when it failed to contain stormwater runoff following a major rain event, sending mud flows into nearby neighborhoods, according to GEAA. In response, GEAA and the Bulverde Neighborhood Alliance filed a notice of intent to sue Lennar Homes to get the company to comply with the 2016 agreement and its permits. Instead, Lennar and its construction partners paid $175,000 to GEAA and the Bulverde Neighborhood Alliance and recommitted to the 2016 agreement, GEAA Executive Director Annalisa Peace said. In December 2021, however, a consultant hired by the Bulverde Neighborhood Alliance found that runoff in neighboring areas has only increased since then. Peace said the two organizations may consider further legal action. Appeasing developers Residents remain frustrated that more cannot be done to manage development in the Hill Country. The risks to the environment and the Edwards Aquifer — which provides roughly half of the region’s water supply — are high. Helotes Canyon is home to four Edwards Aquifer Protection Program conservation easements, including the Scenic Canyon Conservation Easement and the Madla Natural Area. “This whole area so subject to flooding as it is,” Beavin said. “And when we think about a million gallons of effluent a day — it’s just scary.” Susan Beavin, a Grey Forest resident and former president of the San Antonio Conservation Society. Credit: Scott Ball / San Antonio Report Residents are not alone in their concerns. Mayor Ron Nirenberg recently said he believes SAWS has been so focused on obtaining an adequate supply of water that it has neglected to protect the quality of the Edwards Aquifer. “I’ve heard virtually no conversation on that,” Nirenberg said during SAWS’ September board meeting, “and seeing as much concrete that’s laid out there and what’s coming as a result of the roadways being built out there, the [new] rooftops — what are we doing to make sure that we protect the quality of that water?” SAWS President and CEO Robert Puente pointed out that right now, SAWS’ hands are largely tied. It would need the city’s help to create tools to protect Edwards Aquifer water quality. “We don’t have the ability to pass ordinances, venues or anything like that,” Puente said. “If the city gives us those tools, yes, we will.” The city already has one such tool, argues Beavin — it just continually fails to use it. The North Sector Plan, completed in 2010, is a development document meant to help guide the growth of San Antonio’s North Side. But the San Antonio City Council has made at least 85 changes to the plan since 2010, according to a GEAA research report, almost always to appease developers. The plan has no legal bearing on the Guajolote tract, since it is located outside city limits. Still Beavin and Nottingham urged elected officials at every level to enact more protections for the Edwards Aquifer con...

10 Ways To Travel More In 2023 The Motley Fool
10 Ways To Travel More In 2023 The Motley Fool
10 Ways To Travel More In 2023 – The Motley Fool https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/10-ways-to-travel-more-in-2023-the-motley-fool/ Image source: Getty Images If you’ve got a serious case of wanderlust, here’s what you can do to travel more next year. Key points If you want to travel more in 2023, now is the time to start planning. A travel fund is a good way to save money specifically for traveling. There are several more strategies you can use to afford traveling and fit it into your schedule. Lots of people would absolutely love to travel more, but sadly, few actually end up doing it. For many, there’s always some obstacle that gets in the way, like thinking they don’t have enough money or vacation time. I’ve had those same hesitations, so I get it. But if you really want to travel more, you can make it happen, and you definitely don’t need to wait years to do it. Here are all the ways you can go on some exciting new adventures in 2023. 1. Start planning now The best way to turn traveling from a dream into reality is to start seriously planning it. If you’re just hoping to travel more next year, without taking any action, you probably won’t end up doing anything differently than before. When you figure out where you want to go, how much money you’ll need, and when you’ll do it, you’re much more likely to follow through. 2. Set up a travel savings fund Money is usually the main reason that people don’t travel as much as they’d like. It’s a good idea to set up savings specifically for travel so that you don’t need to go into debt to take a trip. If you haven’t already, open a high-yield savings account, since these offer the highest interest rates. You can normally set up multiple sub-savings accounts toward different goals. So, make a sub-account with a name like “Travel Fund,” and start transferring money to it every month. 3. Find expenses you can cut back on When you hear about someone who travels all the time, you might wonder, “How do they do it?” There’s hardly ever a real secret. They’ve made traveling a priority, and they don’t spend much on other expenses so that they have more to spend on it. To free up more money for your travel savings, look for ways to cut expenses elsewhere in areas that aren’t as important to you. For example, if you’re always buying the latest smartphones and other devices, consider whether you’d rather have those or that trip to Europe you’ve always dreamed of. 4. Look for remote working opportunities One great way to make travel work for you financially is by working remotely while on your trips. Consider looking at job boards with remote work or seeing if there’s a way to work remotely at your current job, even if it’s just from time to time. I know that working while you travel probably doesn’t sound like the most appealing thing in the world. Trust me, you can have a fantastic time on a vacation while getting some work done, as well. And working remotely makes it possible to travel much more than if you were taking time off for every trip. 5. Open a travel credit card A travel credit card earns rewards that you can redeem toward travel purchases, such as airfare and hotel stays. Many of the best travel credit cards also include lots of other perks, like points you can transfer to different airlines and hotels or access to airport lounges. The right card, or perhaps multiple credit cards, could help you travel at a much lower cost. 6. Visit places in the offseason Prices are normally much lower when you visit destinations in their offseasons. For example, Europe is most expensive during the summer, but you can have just as much fun visiting in the spring or fall. For trips to popular destinations, be flexible about when you go, and you have a much better chance of finding cheap travel opportunities. 7. Sign up for travel deal alerts There are lots of places where you can get alerts on the latest travel deals. These work especially well if you’re flexible about when you travel. Here are a few of the most popular places to set up travel alerts: Skyscanner Kayak Google Flights Hopper Scott’s Cheap Flights 8. Go on shorter trips Not every trip needs to be a big, two-week vacation somewhere far away from home. One of the easiest ways to travel more often is to add shorter trips that you can take over a long weekend. Look for places that are within driving distance or that you can reach with a quick flight. These are a nice way to get a break from your normal routine without spending much time or money. 9. Consider more affordable destinations There are travel destinations to fit pretty much any budget. If you want to travel somewhere without breaking the bank, it’s all a matter of choosing the right place. You could try Latin America or Southeast Asia, both of which offer lots of incredible and affordable places to visit. Or, if there’s a specific country you want to visit, try going somewhere other than the most popular tourist attraction. Sure, Paris is far from cheap, but there are plenty of other cities that will allow you to experience France without paying nearly as much. 10. Spend smart while you travel It’s easier to travel often if you get good at managing your money while you’re away from home. But if you spend too much, then you’ll probably need to wait a while before you can afford another trip. My preferred approach is to find a middle ground between budget-friendly options and splurging. I’ll go to some nice restaurants and spring for more expensive activities that really interest me. However, I’ll also buy food to eat at my hotel, find cheaper places to grab a bite, and do low-cost activities, like visiting parks and museums. Traveling doesn’t need to be something you dream about doing years in the future. If you make it a priority, and you follow the right tips, you’ll be able to visit plenty of new places in 2023. Top credit card wipes out interest until 2024 If you have credit card debt, transferring it to this top balance transfer card secures you a 0% intro APR for up to 21 months! Knight Frank: Strong Third Quarter Boosts Edinburgh Office Market Scottish Business News
Knight Frank: Strong Third Quarter Boosts Edinburgh Office Market – Scottish Business News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/knight-frank-strong-third-quarter-boosts-edinburgh-office-market-scottish-business-news/ A STRONG third quarter for take-up has helped the Edinburgh office market defy the economic gloom, according to new analysis from Knight Frank. The independent commercial property consultancy found that 121,236 sq. ft. of office space was transacted in Edinburgh city centre between July and September, a strong bounce back from the previous quarter’s 50,834 sq. ft. and in line with the 121,403 sq. ft. registered during the same time last year.  Office take-up has historically tended to be lower during the summer months due to holidays, but there is a significant amount of pent-up demand for quality office space coming onto the market from the Covid-19 pandemic period, Knight Frank said. While there was a mix of active sectors during the quarter, professional services and technology, media, and telecommunications (TMT) continued to drive demand, representing 43% and 12% of take-up respectively. The largest transaction of the quarter was Anderson Strathern securing 21,446 sq. ft. at Capital Square on a 15-year lease. Large deals in the energy sector increased to 15% of total take-up in Edinburgh, with more space under offer and due to conclude in the final three months of 2022. Last quarter, energy equipment company Enoda secured around 8,500 sq. ft. at Quartermile 3, represented by Knight Frank.  A strong July to September meant Grade A supply continued to dwindle. However, Knight Frank noted that more ‘grey space’ – where tenants sub-let unused space – had begun coming onto the market. Simon Capaldi, office agency partner at Knight Frank Edinburgh, said: “The demand for quality office space that built up during the pandemic has begun to filter through into deals, despite the well-publicised wider economic challenges we have faced this year. That could see Edinburgh move closer to the 10-year average for take-up this year, following the slump caused by Covid-19. “We are, however, beginning to see more grey space becoming available in the market – space at 81 George Street and The Haymarket has recently gone on the market with the current occupiers re-sizing their office footprint. We expect more grey space to follow over the next few months, but with demand so high and space comparatively limited, it is unlikely to have a material impact. “Occupiers are increasingly putting pressure on landlords to push forward with proposed refurbishment plans ahead of entry in 2023. We have also seen a rise in demand for ‘plug and play’ office options, where tenants can move in quickly without the hassle of large capital expenditure to fit-out the space.”

Heart: How To Maintain Heart Health With A Busy Lifestyle – NDTV Doctor https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/heart-how-to-maintain-heart-health-with-a-busy-lifestyle-ndtv-doctor/ In this article, we discuss how you can care for your heart if you have a busy schedule.   By: Manya Singh  Updated: Oct 10, 2022 05:26 IST 3-Min Read Heart: Taking stairs is a quick and accessible way to increase your daily workout Taking care of yourself may be neglected when you’re balancing your profession, family, social commitments, and other tasks. However, things don’t have to be that way. Making time for the organ that keeps you alive is crucial for maintaining your health. A busy lifestyle can make it extremely tough for you to care for yourself. However, it is important to take care of yourself and your heart to make sure you live a long and healthy life. In this article, we discuss how you can care for your heart if you have a busy schedule. Follow these heart-healthy tips if you have a busy schedule: 1. Opt for healthy snacks while at work Walnuts or almonds are delicious, heart-healthy, and satisfying snacks that you can easily pack up for work. They don’t need to be refrigerated, and if you don’t consume them, they may be stored in a zipped bag for weeks before going bad. People frequently use a shortage of time as an excuse for making harmful decisions but it can be altered with little effort. 2. Avoid consuming junk There is nothing inherently wrong with feeding people while not poisoning them. Although it’s obvious that certain foods are superior to others. Choose nutrient-dense foods over ultra-processed, nutrient-depleted ones. Due to excessive preservatives, artificial additives, added sugar and salt, etc., these foods scarcely resemble natural foods. Additionally, they frequently strip these meals of their fibre and nutritional value. 3. Pick quality over quantity Investing in higher-quality meals might be a fantastic investment for your heart health if you do have some money to work with. These choices might include organic, grass-fed, and pasture-raised options. Some upscale cuisine is really just marketing tricks. Even though many of them are supported by science. 4. Exercise There is no alternative to exercising. Engage in HIIT or other highly effective and short-spanned workouts to squeeze in working out to your busy schedule. There is no doubt that spending a lot of time sitting down is bad for your heart and health. It decreases blood flow to the lower limbs, increasing the risk of blood clots, nerve discomfort, and vascular disorders. It increases the risk of heart disease, dementia, and type 2 diabetes. 5. Take the stairs Taking stairs is a quick and accessible way to increase your daily workout. Don’t miss this chance to get some exercise if your workplace has stairs. Once you commit to making little adjustments like these, you’ll be inspired to take on more. 6. Try deep breathing Increased blood pressure might become a permanent part of your health status if you experience extended periods of stress. Stress management is crucial to ensuring the prevention of various diseases. Long-term changes to your nutrition and physical exercise will undoubtedly enhance how your body reacts to stress. 7. Get regular checkups Knowing your figures is an important first step in preventing heart disease. Your body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, fasting glucose, and cholesterol readings are good places to start. Plan a yearly physical with your doctor. Your doctor can study your family medical history in addition to screening tests to calculate your statistics in order to evaluate your risk for heart disease. 8. Reduce alcohol consumption Reduce your alcohol consumption. Men shouldn’t drink more than two times every day. There shouldn’t be more than one drink each day for women. Drinking too much alcohol might make you gain weight and cause your blood pressure to rise. Furthermore, for certain people, it might exacerbate or aggravate heart failure. Small steps towards a healthier lifestyle can ensure better health and longevity. Make smart choices today to secure your future. NASCAR At Charlotte Results: Christopher Bell Wins His Way Into Round Of 8 At Bank Of America Roval 400 – Sporting News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nascar-at-charlotte-results-christopher-bell-wins-his-way-into-round-of-8-at-bank-of-america-roval-400-sporting-news/ Christopher Bell’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff chances seemed dead and buried entering Sunday’s race at Charlotte Motor Speedway’s Roval. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver sat toward the foot of the playoff standings. He needed a win to advance to the Round of 8. He got just that. It wasn’t easy. The race was fairly clean, staying green for more than 50 laps — a course record at Charlotte. That made things difficult for Bell, who trailed Chase Elliott, AJ Allmendinger and Tyler Reddick at different points. But a late caution flag gave Bell new life. A gutsy pit stop gave him new tires and an impressive restart took him to second place, a second behind Kevin Harvick. Then another caution flag waved, this time for debris on the track. A lengthy stoppage followed. Bell suddenly was in prime position to overtake Harvick on the restart. With a little less than two laps to go, Bell had the edge. — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 9, 2022 While Bell was crossing the finish line, there was another competition taking place at the other end of the postseason standings. Kyle Larson seemed to be in good shape after the opening two stages, in which he grabbed needed stage points. But the reigning Cup Series champion was dealt an ugly hand in the final stage. His car succumbed to mechanical issues, dropping him all the way to 35th place. That was just the window Chase Briscoe needed. The Stewart-Haas driver nabbed ninth place in the race to seal a place in the Round of 8 — two points ahead of Larson. — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 9, 2022 MORE: Watch NASCAR Cup Series races live with fuboTV (free trial) It was a day that started calmly and ended with fireworks. And The Sporting News tracked all of it. Below are the live updates, results and highlights from Sunday’s wild race at Charlotte. NASCAR at Charlotte live updates, results, highlights (All times Eastern) 5:32 p.m.: Briscoe takes ninth place! That will move him to the Round of 8 and end the playoff dreams for reigning champion Kyle Larson! What a race! 5:31 p.m.: Christopher Bell wins at the Roval! He’s into the Round of 8! — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 9, 2022 5:30 p.m.: Briscoe has a two point edge over Larson for the eighth spot! 5:29 p.m.: Cindric spins out! It’s between Briscoe and Larson for the eight spot! 5:28 p.m.: We’re back underway at Charlotte! Bell has the lead! That puts Larson just one point above the cut line. 5:26 p.m.: Red flag has been lifted. Some cars are pitting. We’re in overtime now! Two laps to go and playoff places still up for grabs. 5:19 p.m.: Red flag waved for debris! What a race this has been! 5:12 p.m.: CAUTION! A yellow flag is waved after Ty Dillon’s No. 42 collides with the wall. Bell and Harvick are going to be at the front for the race restart! Unbelievable stuff happening in Charlotte! 5:11 p.m.: Bell gets past Reddick for second place! He’s a second off of first place Kevin Harvick! Can Bell grab the checkered flag and get an automatic spot in the Round of 8? 5:10 p.m.: Bell’s in third place. He’s got new wheels and it surging up the field fast. Two laps to go! 5:09 p.m.: Three laps to go! Cindric and Briscoe are above Larson in the postseason standings at the moment. 5:04 p.m.: Austin Cindric in a very interesting situation. He’s eight points off Briscoe for the final spot in the Round of 8. Cindric could be headed to pit road? He’s in 20th place, but could make a climb up the standings with some fresh wheels. Decisions, decisions… 5:03 p.m.: CAUTION! A caution flag is waved after part of the wall ends up in the middle of the track. This could make a real big difference on the final playoff standings. — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 9, 2022 5:02 p.m.: Larson back on the track. Looks like he’ll still have a chance of meeting the speed minimum. The stage points he earned earlier today have just got him in the Round of 8. 4:56 p.m.: Kyle Larson getting some serious work done on his car in pit road. He’s down to 31st in the standings. The reigning Cup Series champion might have just enough to get over the line. But it’s going to be super close. 4:55 p.m.: Contact made between Lajoie and Suarez! Looks like little retaliation from Lajoie. That’s only going to hurt Suarez’s playoff chances. 4:54 p.m.: Allmendinger has gained a second on Elliott. He’s had a very smooth race so far, but Elliott still in good shape. 4:47 p.m.: Elliott in a good spot with 15 laps left. Nearly five seconds in front of second-place AJ Allmendinger. 4:35 p.m.: Chastain collided with the wall, causing him some issues. He’s headed to pit road. Lost some serious speed over the past lap or so, prompting concerns over whether Chastain (17 points up above the cut line) can advance to the Round of 8. 4:33 p.m.: Suarez is on his way to the pits. Looks like his team is lifting the hood up and putting some fluid in it with the hope of improving his prospects. 4:27 p.m.: Elliott has a comfortable 4.5 second lead over Erik Jones’ No. 43 car. However, even more interestingly, Suarez is looking in terrible shape. His power steering issues are causing real issues — as of now, he’s out of the postseason. 4:22 p.m.: Allmendinger is on his way to pit road. He waited a mighty long time to get his car looked at. Chase Elliott, one of the best road racers in NASCAR, holds the keys to take the checkered flag at Charlotte now. 4:19 p.m.: Briscoe headed to pit road. Trying to get himself as ready as possible for the remaining 35 laps. He is praying that a caution flag isn’t waved in this final stage. 4:14 p.m.: Briscoe is over the cut line at the moment! Suarez has dropped all the way to 36 due to his power-steering problems. Lots of pressure on Briscoe, who currently sits in 17th place. 4:07 p.m.: Suarez now two points above the cut line. It’s looking very precarious. He’s using a lot of force to steer his car through the chicane. 4:05 p.m.: Daniel Suarez in big trouble at the moment. Looks like his power steering is jacked up after making contact with Lajoie. He’s five points above the cut line but dropping like a stone. With 45 laps to go, Suarez is on the brink of losing his spot in the Round of 8. 4:04 p.m.: Conor Daly headed to pit road. Looks like he’s having some sort of electrical problem beneath the dashboard. His day might be done. 3:58 p.m.: Reddick and Allmendinger setting the pace with 51 laps left. Solid showing by the two non-playoff drivers. 3:54 p.m.: Lots of contact on Lap 54. Chase Briscoe made some contact with other cars as they all made their way across the chicane. Looks like he’s having some issues with his handling after the collision.  3:41 p.m.: And it’s Chastain who notches the stage win! He captured the checkered flag at  COTA earlier in the year. Now, he’s got a stage victory on another road course. — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 9, 2022 3:39 p.m.: Chastain making a late dash for the stage. Could be an interesting finish here… 3:36 p.m.: A slew of drivers are headed to pit road, including postseason competitor Christopher Bell. Lots to consider, but it looks like it’s Allmindinger’s stage to lose at the moment. 3:32 p.m.: Lajoie taking his sweet time around the track. He’s in front of the likes of Byron, but his slower pace (he had to take a complete stop after missing the chicane) could cause some issues for those in need of points. 3:25 p.m.: Noah Gragson and Corey Lajoie getting into a bit of a scuffle around the chicane. Nothing too crazy, just a bit of a chippy affair after they bumped into each other. Neither racer giving an inch. 3:23 p.m.: Reddick still making a good account for himself. Looks like he and his team are aiming for one more victory before the end of the season. That would give him a great springboard for his 2023 campaign with 23XI Racing. 3:18 p.m.: Through 10 laps of Stage 2, the race leaderboard is flipped. Looks like those who opted for pitting earlier in Stage 1 hold positive positions, while those who waited until the stage break are languishing in the standings. If there’s no caution flags on Stage 2, expect things to remain fairly similar at the moment. 3:14 p.m.: Allmendinger snags the lead from Reddick on Lap 31. A decent play by the part-time Cup Series racer, who then blocks Reddick off from getting a draft on the straightaway. Allmendinger is gathering some excitement for next season; he’ll drive the No. 16 car for Kaulig Racing in 2023. 3:12 p.m.: It’s a trio of non-playoff drivers leading the way after six laps of Stage 2. Reddick, AJ Allmendinger and Justin Haley feature in the top three early. 2:59 p.m.: And it’s Logano who gets the stage win! Wire-to-wire dominance by the Team Penske driver. — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 9, 2022 2:58 p.m.: Byron trying to make a run for first but it looks like Logano has it. He’s led all 24 laps today and has about a .75 second lead over Byron. 2:57 p.m.: Hamlin has launched himself into eighth place. He’s in solid spot to snag a playoff berth. 2:55 p.m.: Looks like those who desperately need stage points are staying on the track. However, non-playoff drivers and those so far out of the top-8 place race that they need a win or high finish (e.g., Christopher Bell) are headed to pit road. Could be a lot of reshuffling in the last two laps of Stage 1. 2:54 p.m.: Michael McDowell passes Justin Haley for ninth place. Looks like he’s pushing for Cindric’s spot in No. 8. 2:53 p.m.: Ross Chastain to pit road. Only five laps to go, but looks like his team is banking on Chastain making back the difference on some playoff drivers (Denny Hamlin, Chase Briscoe) after they pit following the end of Stage 1. 2:49 p.m.: The cur...

Hyperreal CEO Remington Scott Is Giving The Metaverse A Soul TheWrap
Hyperreal CEO Remington Scott Is Giving The Metaverse A Soul TheWrap
Hyperreal CEO Remington Scott Is Giving The Metaverse A Soul – TheWrap https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/hyperreal-ceo-remington-scott-is-giving-the-metaverse-a-soul-thewrap/ The true innovation of Remington Scott’s company, Hyperreal, is not just that he’s created strikingly lifelike digital versions of stars who are living or dead (or completely fictional). It’s that he’s putting those creations into the hands of the talent themselves, empowering them to drive the innovation. Hyperreal, which is known for its “Hypermodel” digital humans, has in two years created a near-perfect double of pop star Madison Beer (for a performance that won a Webby for Tech Achievement); made Paul McCartney resemble a Beatles-era version of himself; designed a virtual model of the late rapper The Notorious B.I.G.; and, with entertainment mogul Simon Fuller and Verizon, invented an AI-driven alien pop princess named Alta B who appeared with the boy band Now United in their “Jump” video. (With 60 million views, “Jump” is the most-watched video featuring a virtual being.) Signaling confidence in Hyperreal’s continued growth, the Korean giant CJ ENM took a minority stake in Hyperreal in April.  The fact that the digital versions of real, flesh-and-blood humans are owned by their real, flesh-and-blood human selves (or their estate) means that they can one day bring those models into other virtual spaces in the metaverse — a critical component to Web3 and the metaverse.  Commenting on his strategy for sustaining his company’s growth, Scott emphasized the very thing that makes the Hypermodels so lifelike: human individuality. “There’s playbooks, and a lot of people write about how to do business or write about how to make things,” Scott told TheWrap. “It’s great to listen to those things. But none of them replace what makes you unique and how you are driving forward your vision. You have to embrace that and move forward with that.” Scott, a veteran of computer graphic design in the video game world who supervised the motion-capture work of Gollum on “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers,” declined to share details about Hyperreal’s future work with other A-list stars. Grimcutty Ending Explained: Does Asha Defeat Grimcutty? – The Envoy Web https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/grimcutty-ending-explained-does-asha-defeat-grimcutty-the-envoy-web/ Grimcutty follows Asha, an ordinary teenager, who finds herself battling with an internet meme that has come to life and is now forcing kids to hurt themselves. The movie is now streaming on Hulu. Warning: This article contains heavy spoilers Plot summary Hoping to make it big on the internet, Asha, an ordinary teenager in a suburban town, spends time creating self-help videos for her audience. She also comes from a family that believes there should be rules when it comes to being around technology. In order to keep a balance, Asha’s father, Amir, often likes his family to take one phone-free outing per week. This time around, their outing was for a performance of their son, Kamran. While Asha opts to leave the show midway, Amir indulges in a conversation with another parent who tells him about a viral internet trend that has been catching up. An internet meme that forced two kids to cut themselves because of some challenge. Kamran worries about his daughter, who has been active on social media lately. Asha, with the help of her friend Emily, checks her online videos on Emily’s phone. She finds out that a girl named Cassidy Johnston seems to have liked her video, and has commented, ‘Wow’. Amir comes looking for Asha and is disappointed that his daughter spoiled the phone-free day. Amir’s worry about this internet challenge hits the roof when an image of that meme called, ‘Grimcutty’ starts circling around the internet. The messages suggest that this meme forced a kid to stab his own mother. Amir, and Asha’s mother, Leah, invite Asha and Kamran for a heart-to-heart conversation and to ask if they have seen this meme. Though they deny it, Amir plans to take away all of their gadgets in order to keep them safe. Kamran easily agrees, but Asha fights back, promising that she is sane enough and won’t stab her own parents. Amir’s nightmares come true when Grimcutty arrives seeking his house and finds Asha, while she was making bread and watching videos online. Asha claims she saw the same tall and dark creature from the meme. The cops suspect that this is another kid attempting to follow the internet challenge and consult Asha’s parents. This was it for Amir and Leah. They forced their kids to put their gadgets in a detox box. Later that night, Asha confronted Kamran, who always has a backup. He apparently keeps a second laptop, and Asha used it to contact other teenagers on social media, to figure out if any of them still have their phones. When Amir made sure to cut the internet and Wi-Fi as well, Asha decided to break the detox box. She got her mobile back and was contacted by Cassidy Johnston, who saw her message online. Cassidy urged Asha to come to school the next day no matter what, even though her parents may not let her come. Following that, the Grimcutty made another move on Asha and tried to stab her. When her parents came to her rescue, they didn’t see Grimcutty. To them, it looked like Asha was hurting herself. Grimcutty ending explained in detail: Where does Grimcutty’s trend originate from? Though Amir was against sending his daughter to school, Asha convinced her mother, who gave her permission. A lot of parents opted not to send their kids, and the school brought someone who could talk to them about their anxiety. Asha and Cassidy got along and were hoping they will solve this mess. Asha was the only one up till now who has actually seen the Grimcutty. Cassidy hasn’t and her parents knew about the trend but didn’t panic about it that much, at least yet. With the help of a rich kid in town named Oliver, the duo got their hands on a laptop and an internet connection. They realized that their parents are following the same set of rules. Therefore, these rules must come from a commonplace. Surfing the internet about things like detox boxes landed them on the blogs of Melinda Jaynes, who had also written about Grimcutty, but had deleted the post. Asha and Cassidy also came to the conclusion that she is the mother, whose kid stabbed her because of Grimcutty. Amir found his daughter missing from school. A social media post told Asha’s parents that she is at Oliver’s for a weird party that is mocking Grimcutty. Asha got in touch with Kamran and learned that her parents are on their way. She tasked Kamran to look for Melinda Jaynes and posted about her on the internet. Amir and Leah arrived at Oliver’s and caught Asha hurting herself, although she was struggling to protect herself from Grimcutty. How Grimcutty works? After saving Asha, Amir got a notification on his phone that someone at their house is using the internet. Turns out, it’s Kamran who is searching for Melinda Jaynes. Amir and Leah freaked out and thought, much like Asha, he might also hurt himself. While the family left to save their son, the Grimcutty did make his move on Kamran. Asha and Kamran found themselves at the hospital, with the latter unconscious. While Asha was full of guilt, she saw Kamran’s laptop nearby, where he had done the job of locating Melinda Jaynes. Asha also finds Cassidy at the hospital, since Grimcutty got to her as well. She details Melinda’s location to her and also tells her about an observation she has made through this experience. It’s not them using the internet causing Grimcutty to appear. It’s their parents’ worry. Every time their parents’ hysteria over Grimcutty boils over, he appears to attack their kids. Kamran never saw Grimcutty until his parents freaked out that he might be in danger. Similarly, for Cassidy, her parents were cool until they started worrying about her and Grimcutty, and that landed her in the hospital. How Leah found out about Grimcutty’s truth? Asha paid Melinda Jaynes a visit, and the latter straight denied knowing anything about Grimcutty. Asha’s urge to investigate her house forced her to break in. She found Melinda’s son locked in a room. Melinda, with a shotgun, pointed at Asha and asked her to get out of her house. Eventually, Leah came looking for Asha, after realizing where her daughter is going through Kamran’s laptop. Asha tried to tell Leah about Melinda’s son being locked up in a closet. That’s when Leah realized that her daughter might be freaking out, but she is definitely not a liar. Asha confronted Melinda, who started worrying about her son and unknowingly summoned Grimcutty. When Asha went looking for Melinda’s son, she came across an invisible force that held him up in the air. Why Melinda’s son attacked his own mother? Melinda bought a shotgun to stop Leah, who in turn attacked her. As Melinda fell, she calmed down for a minute, and thus, Grimcutty disappeared. Melinda’s son came out and stabbed her mother in the leg. It seems like Melinda has been keeping her son locked in a closet to save him from Grimcutty’s attack. She threw away all the technology from the house, and this, in turn, helped her calm down. What she didn’t know is the fact that her freaking out is the reason Grimcutty appears to kill her son. When Leah confronted Melinda, the latter confessed that she saw her son looking at Grimcutty and that made her worry, to the point where she surfed the internet looking for a solution. The reason Melinda’s son may have attacked her is probably that he wanted to set himself free from her controlling nature and might’ve figured out how Grimcutty works. As she said, he was the first one to find out about it. Melinda, on the other hand, always thought he was hurting himself. She also confessed to sharing the picture of Grimcutty online. Probably, she was hoping that hysteria will spread elsewhere and Grimcutty would stay away from her son. How Asha killed Grimcutty? Leah was now sure that her daughter is not lying and took Melinda’s son to the hospital. They both still had to convince Amir. Leah told Amir to take an injection to calm himself down, but he opted not to. He was worried about Kamran after taking a look at his search history. In order to protect her brother and kill Grimcutty, Asha wanted her father to worry about her, not Kamran. This way, she can stab Grimcutty once it appears. She had stabbed that entity before and had thought it will work. She told her father that she was watching Grimcutty videos all day long. The entity appeared and made its move on Asha, but Amir intervened, and Asha accidentally stabbed her own father. Amir continued following Asha and saw an invisible force, much like Leah did, holding Asha up in the air. Amir thought of trusting his daughter and injected himself with the syringe Leah gave him in order to calm himself down. Luckily, Amir survived, and Asha was saved too. After that incident, Asha addressed every other question revolving around Grimcutty through a video on her channel and explained how an understanding between parents and their kids would help them fight Grimcutty if it ever comes back again. Ethereum Sees Biggest Network Growth Day In 2022 – Number Of Addresses Hits All-Time High – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/ethereum-sees-biggest-network-growth-day-in-2022-number-of-addresses-hits-all-time-high-cryptonews/ Source: Unsplash The Ethereum network has seen its biggest one-day growth so far in 2022, with the total number of wallet addresses on the network hitting a fresh all-time high over the weekend. The growth indicates that the real-world utility of the network is rising. Per data from the crypto analytics firm Santiment, a surge in new addresses created on Ethereum was seen on Saturday, when as many as 135,780 brand new wallet addresses popped up on the network. The firm noted in a tweet published this weekend that the increase was 11.1% larger than what was seen on January 3, which marked the second biggest day for network growth this year. As explained by Santiment, the network growth means that the utility of the network is rising, which it said “commonly foreshadow potential asset breakouts.” The unusually strong network growth was also pointed out by others on Twitter, with one Twitter user predicting that “big moves” are coming: The large growth seen over the weekend also meant that the cumulative number of wallet addresses on Ethereum reached a new all-time high. As of Sunday, a total of 207.4m unique addresses existed on the network, data from Etherscan showed. Source: Etherscan Growth in Ethereum’s utility – and ultimately the ETH price – is something the Ethereum community has wished for following the highly anticipated transition to proof-of-stake (PoS) on September 15, known as the Merge. Among other things, the Merge is expected to bring huge improvements in terms of energy efficiency, with the Ethereum Foundation famously pointing to a potential reduction in the network’s energy use of 99.95%. As previously reported by Cryptonews.com, it is widely believed that this could also lead to large capital inflows from ESG-conscious investors. So far, however, the price has not reacted in the way the community had wished for, with ETH still trading almost 17% lower than it did at the time of the Merge. As of 11:10 UTC on Monday, ETH traded at $1,311. The price is down 0.9% for the past 24 hours, but up 1.1% for the past 7 days.

US STOCKS-Futures Slip On Escalating Ukraine War, Dip In Chip Stocks – Yahoo Finance https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/us-stocks-futures-slip-on-escalating-ukraine-war-dip-in-chip-stocks-yahoo-finance/ (For a Reuters live blog on U.S., UK and European stock markets, click or type LIVE/ in a news window.) * Futures: Dow -0.18%, S&P -0.31%, Nasdaq -0.45% By Ankika Biswas Oct 10 (Reuters) – U.S. stock index futures slipped on Monday, as an intensifying war in Ukraine and U.S. curbs on chip technology exports to China hit investors’ appetite for risk assets ahead of the upcoming earnings season. Major U.S. banks are set to kick off the earnings season this week, in what is expected to be a roller-coaster quarter for companies, which have been dealing with inflationary pressures, rising interest rates and geopolitical uncertainties. Russia struck Ukrainian cities during rush hour on Monday morning, killing civilians and destroying infrastructure after President Vladimir Putin declared an explosion on the bridge to Crimea as a terrorist attack. The Biden administration’s move to hobble China’s chip industry with sweeping new export rules hit shares of Intel Corp , Nvidia Corp, Qualcomm Inc, Micron Technology Inc and Advanced Micro Devices, all of which fell between 0.2% and 1.2%. As analysts increasingly price in a downturn next year, earnings for S&P 500 companies for the third quarter have now been estimated to rise 4.1%, down from an increase of 11.1% at the beginning of July, according to Refinitiv data. At 6:47 a.m. ET, Dow e-minis were down 54 points, or 0.18%, S&P 500 e-minis were down 11.25 points, or 0.31%, and Nasdaq 100 e-minis were down 50 points, or 0.45%. The U.S. bond market was shut on Monday on account of Columbus Day, which could lead to thin trading volumes. Wall Street fell sharply on Friday following a solid jobs report for September that increased the likelihood of the U.S. Federal Reserve sticking to its aggressive interest rate hiking campaign and likely pushing the U.S. economy into a recession. Money markets are pricing in an 89% chance of another 75 basis-point hike at the Fed’s November meeting. As economic data continues to point to price pressures, investors will keep a close watch on comments from Fed’s Chicago President Charles Evans and Vice Chair Lael Brainard. With yields on the 10-year Treasury note rising to a near two-week high, rate-sensitive technology and other growth names such as Alphabet Inc, Apple Inc and Meta Platforms Inc were in the red. Tesla Inc dipped in premarket trading after RBC Capital Markets expressed concerns on overall demand, while cutting its price target and flagging potential risk to fourth-quarter deliveries in the United States. Retailers Inventory Stockpiles Are At Record Highs Which Could Be Bad News For The Economy The Washington Post
Retailers’ Inventory Stockpiles Are At Record Highs, Which Could Be Bad News For The Economy – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/retailers-inventory-stockpiles-are-at-record-highs-which-could-be-bad-news-for-the-economy-the-washington-post/ Dell has too many computers. Nike is swimming in summer clothes. And the Gap is flooded with basics like T-shirts and shorts. After struggling with product shortages for much of the pandemic, the country’s retailers are now facing the opposite problem: an unprecedented glut of unsold merchandise that’s cutting into profits, derailing holiday plans and threatening to drag down broader U.S. economic growth. In response, many of the country’s largest retailers are kicking off holiday sales earlier than ever, in hopes of clearing their warehouses enough to accommodate a new round of winter orders, according to company filings and earnings calls. Target began its winter selling frenzy last week with $6 hoodies and half-off TVs. Amazon is hosting an unusual second Prime Day sale next week, less than three months after its last one. And dozens of other brands, including J. Crew and Nine West, are offering steep blanket discounts online and in stores. “There is an increasing smell of desperation in the air because retailers are saddled with a ton of excess,” said Elaine Kwon, managing partner at Kwontified, a retail consulting firm, and a former manager at Amazon Fashion. “Some brands that claim they never discount are going to start discounting, especially outerwear, winter wear, cold weather items, inventory from last winter — they’re desperately trying to get rid of that before their new stuff comes in.” High inventories have been plaguing companies all year, playing a big role in the recent contraction in the U.S. economy. But merchandise pileups have only grown. U.S. retailers have been sitting on a record $732 billion of inventory as of July — a 21 percent increase from a year ago, according to Census Bureau data. And the timing couldn’t be worse, as Americans’ appetite for clothing, furniture, electronics and other goods has cooled off in part due to surging inflation but also because of changing pandemic patterns toward services like restaurants and travel. Monthly household spending on goods has slowed lately. With inflation stubbornly near 40-year highs, many are finding that even the deepest discounts aren’t translating into sales. Americans are spending more of their budgets on essentials like gas and groceries, leaving less for nonessential items. “There is a severe imbalance. Consumer spending is slowing but orders are still piling in,” said Gregory Daco, chief economist at Ernst & Young’s strategy consulting arm, EY-Parthenon. “Retail inventories are accumulating beyond levels that are desirable. It’s a very difficult rebalancing exercise that retailers are having to do, and it’s going to have an outsize impact on the economy.” Consumer spending makes up about 70 percent of the economy. Inventories of products that consumers buy help explain how the economy is or isn’t growing. Although inventory figures helped boost economic growth for much of the past year, that changed in the most recent quarter. A pileup of merchandise dragged down total economic growth by 1.9 percent between April and June. Economists expect that trend to continue in the next gross domestic product report, expected out later this month. “We’ve seen in the last few reports that inventory has been a key swing factor — in the second quarter, it was a massive drag on GDP growth, and that’s likely to continue,” said Daco, who expects a recession within the next six months. “If anything, this inventory offloading — the destocking cycle that retailers are going into — will exacerbate the downturn.” In the meantime, extra goods are creating new challenges for retailers, including a lack of storage space and a shortage of cash. Concerns over diminished profits have also led to dramatic sell-offs in the stock market. Shares of Target’s stock have fallen more than 34 percent so far this year, largely related to inventory concerns. Nike shares, meanwhile, fell nearly 13 percent in one day in late September after the retail giant said it would have to “aggressively” mark down products on its website and in its outlet stores. “Because we had late product arriving for the spring, summer and fall seasons … we effectively have a few seasons landing in the marketplace at the same time,” Matt Friend, Nike’s chief financial officer, said in an earnings call last week. “We’ve decided to take that inventory and more aggressively liquidate it.” Not even the country’s largest online retailer has been immune from inventory woes. An Amazon warehouse near Nashville has been overwhelmed by last winter’s puffy jackets and summer cans of bug spray, according to an Amazon employee who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of losing his job. (Amazon founder Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post.) “Our facilities have been overstuffed with excess inventory,” the employee said. “We were prepared for a whole new system where everybody was going to order from Amazon all the time, and that just hasn’t been the case. There’s so much leftover stuff — so many big bulky jackets taking up space — that people just didn’t buy.” Amazon did not respond to a request for comment. Meanwhile, department store chain Kohl’s has 48 percent more inventory than it did a year ago, in part because it has been holding on to $82 million worth of pajamas, fleece and other winter items that arrived late for last year’s holiday season. It plans to put those products out on shelves this fall. “We’re actively working down inventory,” Jill Timm, the company’s chief financial officer, said in an August earnings call. “We’ve been aggressive on clearance as well as promotions.” Wide-ranging discounts could help ease some of the pain of inflation. Overall prices have risen 8.3 percent from a year ago, a notch down from the summer’s highs but still far higher than historic norms, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There are already signs that prices are easing in some parts of the economy. Appliances, bedroom furniture, jewelry, TVs and smartphones were all cheaper in August than they were in July. “Prices will get lower,” said Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab. “We’re already seeing it to some degree: disinflation, if not outright deflation, in some areas where companies just have to work down their inventories.” Charlie Reid, owner of Charlie’s Computers & Emporium in Las Vegas, is marking down dozens of laptops by 30 percent or more. He has nearly triple the stock of refurbished PCs than he’d hoped for. Sales were brisk for much of the pandemic, as people scooped up laptops for remote work and schooling needs. But as life has returned to normal, demand has dropped, he said. “As far as basic laptops for basic needs — HPs, Dells — there just doesn’t seem to be much interest anymore,” he said. “Toward the beginning of the year, they just started to pile up in our backroom. People seemed to lose interest.” Even marking down items has become a fraught calculation for retailers, after more than two years of wildly unpredictable manufacturing- and transportation-related swings. There is a sense that the supply chain is just one covid-related shutdown or geopolitical disaster away from another round of shortages and delays. Some retailers are hesitant to sell products at a discount now, only to have to replace them with higher-priced goods later. “More so than in the past, retailers are holding onto inventory while they wait things out,” said Brian Ehrig, a partner at the consulting firm Kearney. “There is still real concern about geopolitical risks that are still out there, so companies are taking a more conservative approach and thinking hard about scenarios that could play out.” In Abilene, Tex., executives at Andrews Furniture are canceling orders for sofas, beds and dressers now that shoppers are pulling back. The company has about 20 percent more inventory — mainly upholstered chairs and other living room furniture — in its warehouse than usual, according to Scott Andrews, an executive at the company. “Early in the pandemic we saw where buying habits were going and tried to estimate off that, but now we have too much,” he said. “People are changing their habits. They’re going on vacation instead of buying another sofa. I’m constantly looking at our inventory levels, trying to figure out how to work through these extra items.”

Sainsbury’s Backs Pregnant Mothers And Kids Health Scheme – Evening Standard https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/sainsburys-backs-pregnant-mothers-and-kids-health-scheme-evening-standard/ S ainsbury’s is to top up the Government-funded NHS Healthy Start scheme by £2 in a move the supermarket said could help feed more than half a million pregnant women and children over the coming months. It will be providing a £2 coupon every week for the third time over the next six months to customers using a Healthy Start card in Sainsbury’s, starting this week on Wednesday October 12, until Tuesday April 11 next year. The NHS Healthy Start scheme helps to encourage a healthy diet for pregnant women, babies and young children under four from low-income households. Customers in England who use a Healthy Start card when shopping at Sainsbury’s automatically receive a printed coupon worth £2 to use towards fresh, frozen, and tinned fruit and vegetables during their next shop. Sainsbury’s first introduced the £2 top-up coupon in 2021, helping families during February half term and beyond. The coupon was then reintroduced throughout the winter to provide extra help to those who may be struggling over the Christmas period. Ruth Cranston, director of corporate responsibility and sustainability at Sainsbury’s, said: “We know that times are tough for millions of families across the country, and that the rising cost-of-living is causing uncertainty for many of our customers, so today we’ve announced that we’ll be topping up the Government-funded NHS Healthy Start scheme by £2 for the third time. “We believe that everyone deserves to eat well, and the cost of healthy food shouldn’t be a barrier to this. We hope this additional support will ensure that good, quality food is accessible for everyone.” Register for free to continue reading Sign up for exclusive newsletters, comment on stories, enter competitions and attend events.
