This game belongs to the Jets. 40-17 now after the Braxton Berrios run.

The Dolphins had a very creative play call on fourth and 1. A fullback handoff, and he pitched it to Mostert. You can’t even blame the call, that was all Jets defense. Great pursuit, they were all over it.

It’s great to see first-round pick Quinnen Williams come up with a big play. Thompson fumbles (First Miami fumble lost all year) and now the Jets are about to extend their lead.

7 plays, 56 yards and seven points. The Jets now have a nine-point lead. Michael Carter has two touchdowns, but Breece Hall has been the story. 78 rushing yards and 100 receiving yards on 2 targets.

OH NO. A missed 54-yard field goal. That feels like a pretty significant moment. Dolphins remain down 2 points, but this defense has been stout.
43 yards, 6 plays. Missed FG from Jets’ 36-yard line.

We had just three points scored in the third quarter after 28 scored in the second quarter. Wonder how much more scoring we will get. Both offenses not exactly balling out. Penalties are sparking drives now.

Anytime you go deep on fourth and 1 is very weird. Is Skylar Thompson about to out-duel Zach Wilson?

Dolphins have now gone 10 plays on 47 yards. Drive has felt like an eternity. Nothing really going. Field goal unit coming out.

Expect Miami to rely on Mostert a ton in this second half.

Durham Smythe with a one-yard rush touchdown rush on a play the Chiefs ran last week against the Bucs. 19-14 now.
It really feels like the Jets have momentum, but this game is far from over.

Six seconds before halftime. Dolphins going for it on second and goal down 19-7.

What’s really stood out to me so far apart from Sauce Gardner is Raheem Mostert. He has 74 yards rushing right now!

SAUCE GARDNER. He should be the favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year no respect to Devin Lloyd. Two HUGE plays today. Kid is a baller.

Dolphins! 8 plays, 75 yards. Mike McDaniel is having to get creative with some of these play calls with a third-stringer. It worked on that drive. Keep an eye on the running backs here. 12-7 Jets.

Breece Hall catch-and-run goes for 79 YARDS. Dolphins defense had no interest in tackling him.

A three-and-out on Thompson’s second drive. A screen went nowhere, and a five-yard completion on third and seven wasn’t enough.
Big opportunity for the Jets here.

Jets put together their best drive of the game. 56 yards on seven plays. Ends on a 34-yard field goal to push the lead to five points. More than half of those yards came from penalties.

Dolphins go 5 plays, 33 yards before they have to punt. I really do like Skylar Thompson though. I want to see if he’s going to settle in.
While it’s early, I think a storyline we are passing over is that the Jets’ offense has been bad. Let’s see if they can pick up more than one first down this drive.

Wow the Jets are so juiced today. Safety to start the game and now great field position thanks to Braxton Berrios.

First offensive play for the Dolphins and they get a safety! Unreal. Intentional grounding is definitely a weird call. Almost looked like a fumble.
I don’t care if the arm is going forward, Bridgewater didn’t have possession of the ball.

It is an amazing experience to see how this technology can be utilized in a baseball space; I’m very excited about how the future will look with this technology and incorporate it into a game!”
— Aaron Schneider | LSA Head Baseball Coach
HOUSTON, TEXAS, USA, October 9, 2022 /EINPresswire.com/ — Marcus Cantu is the first high school baseball player to use holographic teleportation. Cantu was holographically teleported into the Coach’s office, and the coach could coach him remotely. Cantu and his coach Mr. Schneider used Aexa’s novel technology, “Holoconnect,” which allows users to project as a three-dimensional hologram into a remote location.
Aexa’s technology was used for the first time in October 2021, when NASA flight surgeon Dr. Josef Schmid, industry partner AEXA Aerospace CEO Fernando De La Pena Llaca and their teams were the first humans “holographically teleported” from Earth into space.
Aexa plans to release this technology during the last quarter of 2022 as a low-cost universal solution. Aexa will launch the technology under Aexa Tech, and the Holoconnect will be available for any Mixed Reality, Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, Smart glasses, Smartphones, and Tablets. The goal is to provide holographically teleportation technology to any consumer by allowing them to use devices they currently have. That way, the technology will be available to help to provide coaching to sports players in any remote area. This technology will also be used for engineering, education, and medical purposes.

REVIEW
Apple has brought out a seriously rugged smartwatch called the Apple Watch Ultra, which boasts up to 60 hours of battery life, with its new low power mode. Could this be the perfect Apple Watch for explorers, adventurers or even the every day Apple Watch user?
Design
The Apple Watch Ultra is a cellular smartwatch that comes in one colour – titanium. It reminds me of Apple’s starlight colour, which presents as a colour that’s between silver and gold.
Titanium is also the material the watch is made out of so that the Ultra is lightweight, rugged and resistant to corrosion. And depending on the watch band you choose, the Ultra can have a totally different look.
There are three all new watch bands made for the Ultra – the alpine loop, trail loop, and ocean band and they’re all unique and made for different scenarios.
For example, the ocean band is made of a high performance elastomer, which is great for stretching over a wetsuit and is also secure for high performance water sports.
These three bands (that are available in multiple colours) are probably the best bands to choose for this watch, however, I can confirm that ”regular” 45mm watch bands also fit the Apple Watch Ultra.
Features
Taking a look at the new Apple Watch Ultra, it’s very much a beefed up version of a regular Apple Watch.
It’s the largest Apple watch face we’ve seen at 49mm, as opposed to the largest regular Apple Watch which has a display size of 45mm.
The sapphire crystal watch face is now completely flat and flush with its titanium casing; there’s no longer a curved display that meets the metal edges. And the new display is the brightest ever in an Apple Watch at 2000 nits, twice as bright compared to any other Apple Watch.
This is one of my favourite new features of the watch. The display is so unbelievably clear, and easy to read, even in harsh sunlight.
On the left side there’s a refined dual-frequency GPS antenna, that provides more accurate location data for calculating distance, pace, and route maps. There are dual speakers so that audio playback such as Siri and phone calls are louder and easier to hear.
There’s a new large, orange coloured ‘Action Button’ which is a customisable button that allows you to instantly start a pre-programmed workout, mark a compass waypoint or you can even press and hold it to activate the new Siren feature.
It’s a built-in 86 decibel siren that can be heard up to 180 metres away, which is helpful if you’re lost and are hoping to attract attention. I can confirm it is an impressive feature.
There’s also a new depth gauge which provides real time measurements of underwater depths up to 40 metres, making it like a dive computer, and it also includes water temperature readings.
Additionally, on the right side there’s a new three-mic array. Through my tests I found that these have seriously improved the microphone’s audio quality, providing clearer audio quality, especially in windy environments.
Apple has also raised the side button slightly, and enlarged the digital crown dial and given it coarser grooves to make it easier to use, which is helpful if you have gloves on.
So, the entire watch has been through a complete overhaul. And it’s become a swiss army knife on your wrist, with the addition of smart features such as crash detection (which will intelligently alert emergency services if you’re in a car crash), GPS waypoints, and fall detection.
Personally, I’m not a big adventurer myself, I’ve never done a triathlon and I’m not an athlete but I love having all of these insane features on my wrist. I feel like Inspector Gadget.
I will say though, this watch is a lot chunkier than the regular Apple Watch. And even as someone who enjoys wearing the larger 45mm Apple Watch, it felt a little big for everyday wear.
In saying that, it’s only around 10g heavier than the Apple Watch I currently wear, so it’s only a visible difference, and you can barely notice a difference in weight.
Battery Life
I haven’t been able to test the Ultra’s low power battery mode, which boasts 60 hours of battery life, as it’s coming soon to the Apple Watch Ultra as an update.
For now, I’ve been able to use the watch for almost two days straight, whereas the regular watch only lasts around a day.
However, the Apple Watch Ultra with general use, boasts up to 36 hours of battery life, and it has been delightful to not have to charge it as frequently.
This also means it can finally track a full triathlon, which was apparently a pain point for athletes and amateur athletes previously.
Is it worth it?
With the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple has now created a watch that suits a whole new range of people.
Endurance athletes, people that partake in water sports, divers, and a range of other unique activities. And although the battery life isn’t going to beat all of the competition when it comes to activity tracking smartwatches, the improved battery life is now enough to last a full triathlon with GPS turned on.
The price tag of the Ultra makes more sense for people who are heading out on adventures regularly, and for those that plan to push this watch to its limits.
However, if you’re a diehard Apple Watch fan and you value having the best of all battery life, you wear gloves at your work, you need the most durable and waterproof smart watch, with the brightest display, and you like larger watches, this is absolutely the Apple Watch for you.
The Apple Watch Ultra retails for $1299.

OpenSea Hit In Ongoing Crypto Exec Exodus As CFO Resigns Cryptopolitan
OpenSea Hit In Ongoing Crypto Exec Exodus As CFO Resigns – Cryptopolitan https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/opensea-hit-in-ongoing-crypto-exec-exodus-as-cfo-resigns-cryptopolitan/
TL;DR Breakdown
OpenSea’s chief financial officer Brain Roberts has resigned.
Monthly volume and unique users on the NFT marketplace have fallen over recent months.
Crypto executives are increasingly leaving their positions amid the bear market.
The past few months in the cryptocurrency industry have been marked with a disturbing number of executive resignations, and OpenSea has just become the latest firm caught in the wave.
OpenSea’s CFO resigns
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at OpenSea, Brian Roberts, has stepped down from his position in the NFT marketplace. Roberts joined OpenSea in December 2021, marking ten months of active service in leading and growing the finance team at the largest NFT marketplace.
Well it is time for me to come ashore from the “open seas.” I’m grateful for the opportunity and proud of many accomplishments but none more than the strength of the finance team at OpenSea.”
Brian Roberts.
Although Roberts ceases to become OpenSea’s CFO, he intends to assume an advisory role at the NFT marketplace. The current Vice President of Finance, Justin Jow, will reportedly take over the wheel as Chief Financial Officer.
“I remain incredibly bullish on web3 and especially OpenSea. The company is heads down building and I assure you, the best is yet to come,” Roberts added.
Crypto bear market forces more exec departure
Roberts’ departure comes as OpenSea records a significant decrease in market interest and trading volume. According to DappRadar, OpenSea’s monthly volume is currently over 7% to $245 million. Additionally, the number of unique wallet addresses interacting with the protocol has also declined by 4.12% to 258.23k.
Generally, interest in NFTs and cryptocurrencies are currently down owing to the bear market and uncertainties around the global economy. Amidst these events, many cryptocurrency companies have seen their executives resign, including Algorand, Alameda Research, Kraken, Celsius, etc.
In late September, the President of FTX.US Brett Harrison announced his resignation 18 months after joining the exchange. Similar to Roberts, Harrison intends to stay at the exchange as an advisor.

Former US President Donald Trump
Former US President Donald Trump has expressed support for the current uprising in Iran, saying that he and his supporters are with the people of Iran.
Addressing his supporters during a rally in Minden, Nevada, on Saturday, he said that “the people of Iran are bravely protesting against their corrupted and brutal regime, courageously facing down violence, persecution, jail, torture, and even death.”
He added that “we are with you and we will always be with you.”
While protests are going on in Iran amid a bloody crackdown by security forces, foreign governments and officials are promising sanctions and punitive measures against the Islamic Republic’s authorities, especially those involved in the suppression of the popular protests.
Oslo-based organization Iran Human Rights said on Saturday that at least 185 people have been killed in the uprising ignited by the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini. The NGO added that about 20 of the killed were minors.
The protests first erupted in Mahsa Amini’s hometown Saqqez and capital Tehran and soon spread to all over the country and garnered support from Iranian expatriate communities around the world as well as foreign governments and officials.
The Persian hashtag to express support for the protests has been retweeted over 270 million times and is still being used.

CLEMSON, — No. 24 Virginia Tech fell to Clemson 2-1 on Sunday, Oct. 9, on the road at Historic Riggs Field.
Virginia Tech’s record drops to 9-4-1 overall and 3-3 in ACC action, Clemson improves to 7-4-2 overall and 3-3 in the ACC.
How it Happened
Clemson broke the scoreless tie when Makenna Morris scored from outside the box in the sixth minute. The Tigers added a second goal from Hal Hershfelt in the 17th minute kicking the ball into the far left corner.
Virginia Tech closed the gap to 2-1 when Taylor Price scored her seventh goal of the season in the 25th-minute. The 2-1 score held to the finish, with zero goals in the second half.
“Disappointed with the result today,” said head coach Chugger Adair. “I think we started of a little bit slow in the game and dug ourselves into a hole forcing us to try to climb out. We came out good in the second half putting pressure on Clemson but we were unable to get the equalizer.”
Game Notes
Taylor Price leads the Hokies in goals with seven.
Price remains the top scoring freshman in the ACC, earning 17 points.

Texas District Attorney Names San Antonio Officer Who Shot 17-Year-Old In A McDonald’s Parking Lot – CNN https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/texas-district-attorney-names-san-antonio-officer-who-shot-17-year-old-in-a-mcdonalds-parking-lot-cnn/
CNN —
The Texas police officer who shot a 17-year-old man while he was eating a meal in a McDonald’s parking lot last week has been named, as the teen remains in critical condition, Bexar County District Attorney Joe Gonzales said in a statement.
San Antonio Officer James Brennand, described by the police department as a probationary officer with seven months of experience, was fired for violating the agency’s tactics, training and procedures, police said.
Brennand shot Erik Cantu who was still reported to be in critical condition on Saturday and is “literally fighting for his life,” his defense attorney, Brian Powers, told CNN on behalf of the teen’s family. Cantu was initially charged with evading detention in a vehicle and assaulting the officer, who had claimed he was struck by the door of the car as the teen backed up.
“While Sunday’s shooting of an unarmed teenager by a then-San Antonio Police officer remains under investigation, the facts and evidence we have received so far led us to reject the charges against Erik Cantu for further investigation,” Gonzales’ office said in a statement.
“Once SAPD completes its investigation into the actions of former Officer James Brennand and submits the case to our office, our Civil Rights Division will fully review the filing. As we do with all officer-involved shootings that result in death or serious injury, we will submit the case to a Grand Jury for their consideration. Until that happens, we can make no further comment on this matter.”
Powers told CNN the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office notified him on Friday prosecutors would not be moving forward with charges against his client. A spokesperson for the DA’s office referred CNN to the county’s online court record system, which indicates both charges have been dismissed and the case closed.
CNN has reached out to Brennand and the San Antonio Police Officers’ Association for comment. Attempts to reach Brennand were unsuccessful on Sunday.
Powers told CNN on Saturday Cantu is “literally fighting for his life every minute of the day as his body has endured a tremendous amount of trauma.”
“We need all the blessings we can receive at this time. We kindly ask for privacy beyond this update as this is a delicate moment in our lives, and we are focusing on one thing and that’s getting him home,” he added.
Gonzales held a news conference Friday to address public concerns about the investigative process.
“Let me be clear that I believe that the large majority of members of the San Antonio police department do an excellent job at protecting our community and doing the right thing,” Gonzales said during the conference.
“We have other decisions we have to make down the road, which may include charging him with a crime,” he said.
The San Antonio Police Department said in a video statement the officer was handling an unrelated disturbance call at the McDonald’s Sunday night when he saw a car, he believed had evaded police the previous day and called for backup.
Before backup officers arrived, body camera video released by police shows the officer walk up to the driver’s side of the car, open the door, and order the driver out. The visibly startled teen, who was in the driver’s seat eating, put the car in reverse and started backing up.
Brennand then opened fire five times on the car, according to the video. As the driver shifted the vehicle to move forward, body camera video showed the officer opening fire an additional five times as the car drove away.
The SAPD said the teen was found a block away suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. A passenger in the car was uninjured, police said.
The SAPD said it is investigating the incident and will forward its findings to the Bexar County District Attorney, who said in a statement his office’s Civil Rights Division would be reviewing the police shooting and the charges against the teen.
Reduced Restrictions Creates More Optimism For Travel Agencies PortageOnline.com
Reduced Restrictions Creates More Optimism For Travel Agencies – PortageOnline.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/reduced-restrictions-creates-more-optimism-for-travel-agencies-portageonline-com/
Business is picking up for local travel agencies as airports have reduced the restrictions that were put in place due to COVID-19.
Last Saturday, it was announced that certain restrictions within Canada would be reduced, if not totally removed, and that news has inspired potential travellers to get their tickets.
Carey Duncan of Travel Quest in Portage la Prairie says people appear to be ready to go.
“We’ve certainly been getting a lot of phone calls. It’s really spurred on a lot more people to be thinking about their winter plans and even into the spring of next year, as well,” says Duncan. “Having the mask mandate dropped, now the ArriveCan app is optional. That is just one more hurdle that people don’t have to worry about.”
As more and more information comes out, more and more tickets are being sold. Duncan says, don’t wait too long if you have vacation on the mind.
“We are seeing people planning well into the future, certainly, for this winter, even beyond, for Europe into the spring and summer,” says Duncan. “Really, with the pricing that we’re seeing right now, with every good news story, prices have tended to go up a little bit. So, you really do need to be planning ahead.”
Nikki Finke Veteran Entertainment Journalist And Deadline Founder Dies At 68 Hollywood Reporter
Nikki Finke, Veteran Entertainment Journalist And Deadline Founder, Dies At 68 – Hollywood Reporter https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nikki-finke-veteran-entertainment-journalist-and-deadline-founder-dies-at-68-hollywood-reporter/
Nikki Finke, a veteran journalist, Deadline‘s founder and a major player in the world of Hollywood, has died. She was 68.
Finke passed away on Sunday morning in Boca Raton, Florida, following a prolonged illness, a family spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter. She is survived by her sister, Terry Finke Dreyfus, her sister’s husband James, and nieces Sarah Greenhill and Diana Leighton.
Born in 1953, Finke grew up in Sands Point on Long Island before graduating from Wellesley College. Finke’s early career included work at the Associated Press, where she covered politics and worked on the wire’s foreign desk, before later joining the staffs of The Dallas Morning News, Newsweek, The Los Angeles Times, and eventually west coast editor at The New York Observer, where she covered entertainment business.
Her time with LA Weekly during the 2000s would see her heading up the Deadline Hollywood column between 2002 and 2009. Between that in 2006, she would also launch its online counterpart, Deadline Hollywood Daily, an around-the-clock version of her print work. Beyond the site fueling entertainment journalism’s break into the 24/7 digital news cycle, she was a key player in the reporting around the 2007 writer’s strike.
The New York Times‘ Brian Stelter wrote in a 2007 profile of Finke’s blog that it had “become a critical forum for Hollywood news and gossip, known for analyzing (in sometimes insulting terms) the behind-the-scenes maneuvering of moguls,” with her reporting on the strike ultimately solidifying “her position as a Hollywood power broker.”
During this time, Finke also became known for her snarky live blogging of Hollywood’s biggest award shows, including the Oscars and Emmys. But perhaps the reclusive journalist’s biggest legacy would become her famous — and at times infamous — approach to reporting, snagging scoops with a bite and cut-throat style that both impressed and angered industry members.
“At her best, Nikki Finke embodied the spirit of journalism and was never afraid to tell the hard truths with an incisive style and enigmatic spark. She was brash and true,” Jay Penske Founder, Chairman and CEO of Penske Media Corporation, said in a statement. “It was never easy with Nikki, but she will always remain one of the most memorable people in my life.”
More to come.

Inverness Culinary School Links With Highland Mental Health Charity Mikeysline For New ‘social Prescription’ Project – Inverness Courier https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/inverness-culinary-school-links-with-highland-mental-health-charity-mikeysline-for-new-social-prescription-project-inverness-courier/
Michaels Culinary School Chef Connor Rae, Mikeysline volunteer and consultant nutritional scientist Kerstin Eickhoff-Piechaczek, and Michaels Culinary School CEO Michael Fallows.
The initiative will encourage attendees to build confidence in the kitchen from the comfort of their own home.
Michaels Culinary School, in Inverness, will be working in collaboration with Mikeysline on the new idea.
The school has been in talks with a local GP to be a contributor for so-called social prescription, referring patients to the social enterprise to learn new skills, engage in the community, and pursue a healthy lifestyle using the replicable and affordable recipes produced and taught by chef Connor Rae.
Online workshops with Michael’s Culinary School will cover several classic dishes and encourage attendees to build confidence in the kitchen from the comfort of their own home.
The workshop collaboration started yesterday – World Mental Health Day – and a number of places on the workshop were reserved for the benefit of Mikeysline volunteers and service users.
Mikeysline has recently welcomed consultant nutritional scientist and visiting contributor Kerstin Eickhoff-Piechaczek from Germany.
Kerstin will be attending some of the workshops with Connor to facilitate friendly and informative conversations about the relationships between food and mental health.
Katie Melville, fundraising manager for Mikeysline, said: “We were delighted to be approached by Michaels Culinary School to benefit from their online workshop programme. Their vision as a social enterprise to encourage people in our community to learn new skills and prepare fresh, healthy and affordable meals for themselves is appropriately timed as the cost of living continues to affect all of us.
“By being able to signpost our service users to Michaels Culinary School we can encourage people meet and talk to others, learn something new, and prepare a fresh healthy meal.”
Michael Fallows, CEO of Michaels Culinary School, said: “Michaels Culinary School was set up with the help and support of my grandad who sadly took his own life in January 2022 due to poor mental health.
“I want to use this opportunity with Mikeysline to make sure that they can continue the work and support that they provide to the local community, and to make sure that people know its OK not to be OK.”

Euro 2024 Qualifying Draw: England Grouped With Italy Sky Sports
Euro 2024 Qualifying Draw: England Grouped With Italy – Sky Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/euro-2024-qualifying-draw-england-grouped-with-italy-sky-sports/
England will face Italy and Ukraine in their Euro 2024 qualifying group.
Defending champions Italy and England met in the final of Euro 2020 but have now been pitted against each other in their bid to qualify for the tournament in Germany. North Macedonia, who prevented Roberto Mancini’s side from reaching the World Cup, will also feature in Group C.
Reacting to England’s qualifying group, manager Gareth Southgate told Sky Sports News: “It’s clearly a tough draw, given the quality of the opposition, and we’ve had draws in qualification that have probably been a little bit more comfortable than that.
“But I’d have to say, Poland and Hungary in the last qualifying group (for the Qatar World Cup) was particularly tough as well. So we’re used to that, and the draws are what they are, it’s about how you perform on the day.”
On facing familiar opposition in Italy, the England manager added: “There are not too many surprises. We know the quality that they have and we know the depth that they have. England’s record against Italy, generally, is not very good so we’ve got to improve that.”
The top two countries from each qualifying group – seven of which include just five countries – will qualify.
Scotland have been grouped with Spain and Norway while Wales will face Croatia.
But the Republic of Ireland seemingly face a tough challenge after being drawn with Netherlands and France.

Meta Connect Rolls Out Next Week Despite Issues Bugging Metaverse Tech Times
‘Meta Connect’ Rolls Out Next Week Despite Issues Bugging Metaverse – Tech Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/meta-connect-rolls-out-next-week-despite-issues-bugging-metaverse-tech-times/
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg will address the public in two days about important updates to Meta’s billion-dollar metaverse project. This event will take place despite news that leaked Meta company memos revealed that even employees were not particularly enthusiastic about the project they were working on.
Metaverse on ‘Quality Lockdown”
The Verge is the first to report that memos were sent to Meta employees requesting that they spend more time in the metaverse. According to leaked memos, the Horizon Worlds team is being briefed for not visiting Meta’s metaverse frequently enough, even though this is the product they are working on.
Previous reports also indicate that the company is still working to resolve a number of quality issues. Vishal Shah, VP of Metaverse, informs his team through leaked memos that they will be in “quality lockdown” for the remainder of the year so that the problems can be resolved before more users gain access to the app.
Mark Zuckerberg could provide insights into what is happening now in the metaverse development as well as his opinion on recent issues hounding the company in the Meta Connect, which will be live streamed on Oct. 11. Previously, the Meta CEO revealed on a Joe Rogan podcast that lighter headsets are in the works. This year’s Meta Connect may provide a glimpse of that.
Meta Connect Details
The people behind the company will share the process of building the metaverse, as well as the many collaborations that they have made along the way, at the Meta Connect conference. The virtual event is reported to feature key presenters who will discuss a variety of topics related to the digital platform.
As per Business Insider, Zuckerberg will discuss the VR developer ecosystem, progress toward the metaverse, and “Project Cambria,” a new high-end VR headset with mixed reality. As stated by the company, anyone with a Meta Quest 2 headset can register to participate virtually in “Meta Horizon Worlds.”
On the said date, the company will host a virtual conference for developers, creators, tech enthusiasts, and others. Mark Zuckerberg’s address on how a social metaverse is additive to physical experiences, allowing users to connect in “deeper, more meaningful ways,” will be one of the event’s highlights.
Aside from bringing the world closer together, the metaverse promises a plethora of new business opportunities. The event will include talks on how to capitalize on the metaverse’s opportunities and turn them into profitable businesses.

In-depth discussions of new products, tools, and hardware will also be held during the event and on-demand later. According to Mark Zuckerberg, Meta is preparing something for its virtual reality headsets that will be available by October, as stated on a Joe Rogan Podcast.
The company’s next product will launch later this year to bring the world a new VR headset experience that would give everyone a chance to access the digital world.

All The News From DC’s NYCC Gotham City Panel – Batman-News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/all-the-news-from-dcs-nycc-gotham-city-panel-batman-news/
DC’s Gotham City panel began at 10.45am: the latest update for fans about what’s going on in the world of Batman. People began their Sunday morning a little drowsy, but that energy quickly resurfaced once the panel truly began.
Ben Abernathy, an executive editor at DC, introduced the panelists: Frank Tieri, Meghan Fitzmartin, Ram V, Ed Brisson and, shockingly, Paul Dano.
Riddler: Year One
Dano was not listed as a guest for the panel. His schedule meant he was only there for enough time to discuss his comic, where he talked about his experiences both playing and writing for Riddler.
“The first page is inside of Edward’s head,” he began, “and then you step outside into the world through him.”
Dano described how the comic was conceived while filming for The Batman. “I told Matt Reeves about it on set one night, and he told me ‘that could be a comic!’ … right away, he talked to Jim Lee about it.” Chuckling, he said he had an “Oh shit, now I actually have to do this” moment.
Dano also took the time to praise his artist partner, Stevan Subic. “I love his work,” he said. “I have not met him in person, but we Zoom all the time.” Subic could not attend this year’s panel, but delivered a video message giving best wishes to con-goers and readers.
Batman Incorporated
After Dano left, the panel shifted to the world of the mainline DCU: beginning with the relaunch of Batman Incorporated. Ed Brisson was asked about how Ghost-Maker was the right fit to lead the team going forward.
“I honestly don’t know if he is the right guy,” Brisson said. “And that’s what the story is about.”
This new series will be a means of challenging Ghost-Maker as his character develops. As someone who wants to out-do Batman, Ghost-Maker is testing himself to grow Batman Incorporated beyond “what it was before”.
“He is a bit of a prick,” Brisson said, describing the character. “He doesn’t really care about what other people think of him, he doesn’t have time for caring.”
Well, neither does Batman – “Ghost-Maker has even less.”
“With any team book it’s difficult to juggle many characters,” Brisson said, praising artist John Timms for his work on the book – and a team book, especially. “I think we’ve had him design 8 to 10 characters.”
Abernathy laughed and suggested a Batman of Nova Scotia could appear as the book continued. “The Bat-Signal will be housed in a lighthouse,” joked Brisson.
Tim Drake: Robin
“When anyone asks you who is your favourite Robin, it’s a trap,” said Meghan Fitzmartin, who’s currently working on Tim Drake’s Robin comic. “They’re all great! It’s like picking your favourite kid (even if you have one).”
Fitzmartin took a moment to clarify on what she finds particularly special about Tim. “I think he represents the burnout generation. So much about Tim is stuff we feel. I didn’t lose my parents in a tragic accident, but I have complicated relationships with my parents the way Tim did for a long time.”
Fitzmartin then said she believed Tim to be such a skilled detective “because of his empathy.” Detective mysteries in the book will tie into who Tim is as a character: “The ‘who am I now?’ phase after high school, after college.”
Tim’s new headquarters is based out of Gotham Marina, a new location in the city. “I love boats!” Fitzmartin explained, excitedly. “Even though Gotham is surrounded by boats… we’ve been to the docks, we’ve been to many a warehouse – we haven’t been to a marina.”
Riley Rossmo is the artist on Tim Drake, and Fitzmartin talked about the ideas he brings to the table – in particular, praising his work on the marina. Issue 1 is out now.
Multiversity: Harley Screws Up the DCU.
This book is the latest announcement from DC, and writer Frank Tieri was quick to clarify, “It was not initially pitched as ‘screws up’.”
“Harley is back in Coney Island,” says Tieri, “And she mysteriously inherits what she finds out is a time machine. So, Harley being Harley, she’s not going to have a time machine and not use it.”
When Harley returns to the present, she finds the world to be overtaken by Starro the Conquerer. “Harley figures out that when she used the time machine, she accidentally screwed up the origins of all the major DC heroes, so now she has to go back in time and fix all the shit she screwed up.”
Amanda Conner has also been confirmed to be providing cover art for the series as it continues.
Detective Comics
Ram V’s Detective Comics run has already begun, but today was a good opportunity to hear more of what’s to come.
“My real influence when it came to Batman was watching The Animated Series,” said V. “I lived in India, and we didn’t get single issues back there. I always felt like there was this underlying sense of dread and drama to everything that show did.”‘
“There’s always that question, how is Detective different from the main Batman comic? To me the answer was that it had to do something aesthetically different.” Seeing Zdarsky’s run would go high-octane with action and gadgets, V suggested to “move Detective into the area of drama.”
Speaking about the villains in his story, V asked, “What if someone came into Gotham City and said, ‘I can fix this city better than the way Batman’s been doing all of these years’?”
He suggested it raises the question of if you steal anything from a city when ‘fixing’ it. “Two-Face becomes a metaphor for this. When you ‘fix’ Two-Face, are you taking away something important to him?”
V’s first arc, “Nocturne”, “is intended to be epic, both in terms of external stale, but also in terms of … what Bruce has going on inside.” Meanwhile, he confirmed a western-inspired “intermission”, between the first two arcs named “Intermezzo”.
Conclusion
Ed is also working on Deathstroke Inc, There’s Something Wrong with Patrick Todd and Predator. Meghan is also working on Dark Crisis: Young Justice, a Zatanna backup, and both writers are working on the Wildstorm 30th Anniversary special. Frank is working on Dark Crisis: War Zone, some mature content for Marvel, and some work in Archie comics. Ram V is working on Swamp Thing, Aquaman: Andromeda, and two indie books he hasn’t announced – though he described one as a “Kaiju Romance Time Travel”, and the other as the same situation “told from two different perspectives”.
The panel began to wrap up with each attendant being handed an issue of Detective Comics and Batman vs Robin.
That’s it for today’s Gotham City panel! To conclude, here’s Frank Tieri’s favourite Batman story:
“I like when he broke his back. That shit was cool.”

Terra Luna Classic Price Prediction How High Can LUNC Rally By 2023? Cryptonews
Terra Luna Classic Price Prediction – How High Can LUNC Rally By 2023? – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/terra-luna-classic-price-prediction-how-high-can-lunc-rally-by-2023-cryptonews/
Terra Luna Classic price prediction is now bullish after LUNC bounced off the 50-day moving average support area of $0.00022525. Most of LUNC’s bullish trend is driven by the new burn mechanism.
Binance, a cryptocurrency exchange, has created a new burn mechanism for the Luna Classic (LUNC) token, bringing renewed interest to the original Terra chain’s token.
The question now is how high LUNC can rally by 2023. Let’s find out!
Binance Implements Terra Classic (LUNC) Burn Mechanism
Accordingly to Binance’s announcement, the exchange decided to develop a burn mechanism to transfer all trading fees on LUNC spot and margin trading pairs to the LUNC burn address. This announcement will be updated weekly with the precise quantity of LUNC to be burned, its corresponding value in USDT, and the on-chain transaction ID.
About 7.2 billion LUNC were burned in batch 1 of LUNC burn. However, There has been no apparent change in the rate of cryptocurrency burns nearly two weeks after the widespread burn of the infamous LUNC began.
Binance LUNC Burn – Source: Binance Announcements
It’s worth noting that approximately 6 billion LUNC were taken off the market as trading commissions after the first batch burnt. The data on trade volumes suggests a decline in the LUNC burn rate.
Furthermore, by October 10, we should have an accurate count of the coins Binance has destroyed.
As the primary factor in the number of trading fees and taxes paid on trades, a decrease in trading activity might have an unfavorable impact.
Binance Calls Upon Other Exchanges to Implement Burn
According to recent tweets by Luna C Whale, Binance, the leading cryptocurrency exchange, has invited other exchanges to implement the LUNC burn mechanism.
Thousands of users have retweeted the news, but the source has yet to be confirmed. If this is correct, we may see more LUNC price support in the coming days.
Previously, the CoinMarketCap statistics show that if the LUNC trade volume were $913 million on Monday, October 3, it would drop to $250 million by the end of the week. LUNC traders will be watching for the next announcement on the LUNC burn figure with bated breath.
Terra Classic’s current price is $0.000294, with a 24-hour trading volume of $260,425,822. Terra Classic has increased by 1.63% in the previous 24 hours. CoinMarketCap now ranks 32nd, with a live market cap of $1,809,604,400.
Terra Luna Classic Price Prediction – How High Can LUNC Rally By 2023?
Technically, LUNC has bounced off the 50-day moving average line at $0.000279 and is now trading at 0.000294. The LUNC/USD has completed a 61.8% Fibonacci retracement at $0.000279, and candles closing above this level increase the likelihood of a bullish reversal.
LUNC’s immediate resistance remains at $0.000342, which is extended by a 38.2% Fibonacci retracement.
Above this, LUNC can target the 50% and 61.8% Fibonacci retracement levels, which are at $0.000392 and $0.000440, respectively.
The leading technical indicators, the relative strength index (RSI) and the moving average convergence and divergence (MACD), are tossing in the bullish and bearish zones on the daily timeframe.
These indicators show a tug-of-war between bulls and bears, implying that investors are waiting for a compelling reason to make their next move.
On the downside, a break of $0.00028 could send the LUNC price down to $0.000227 or $0.000185 support.
How High Can LUNC Rally By 2023?
Given the success of the LUNC burn, LUNC has the potential to attract buyers, and increased demand could push the LUNC price up to $0.000439 or $0.000586.
A further bullish breakout in LUNC could open up more room for buying until $0.000765 (1.14% Fib extension) or $0.000997 (1.14% Fib extension) levels.
LUNC Alternatives – Tamadoge & IMPT Pumping
Tamadoge, a meme coin, has grown in popularity since its yearly low of $0.01683. OpenSea now sells ultra-rare Tamadoge NFTs starting at 1 WETH. Tamadoge has become the third most valuable meme coin in the crypto space.
On the other hand, IMPT’s presale remains in the highlights. Even though the blockchain-based carbon credit marketplace launched its auction during a cryptocurrency bear market, demand for the marketplace token remained high.
The project’s native currency, the IMPT token, has already raised an incredible $2.4 million after only six days of presale, having sold 133.36 tokens.

Ruth Chepngetich Approaches Marathon Record; Emily Sisson Sets U.S. Mark – ESPN https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/ruth-chepngetich-approaches-marathon-record-emily-sisson-sets-u-s-mark-espn/
Kenyan Ruth Chepngetich defended her Chicago Marathon title in a dominant display Sunday, breaking the tape in 2 hours, 14 minutes, 18 seconds, as her compatriot Benson Kipruto cruised to victory in the men’s race in 2:04:24.
Chepngetich built up an early lead and had established an astonishing 3:42 advantage over the chasing pack by the halfway point.
Charging to the line with no one else in sight, the 2019 world champion was in a race against the clock as she tried to break the world record but came up 14 seconds short of Brigid Kosgei’s mark, set on the same flat course three years ago.
“I wanted to break the world record … but I’m happy,” Chepngetich said. “Next year I’m ready to come back again.”
Emily Sisson finished second in an American marathon record of 2:18:29, and Kenyan Vivian Jerono Kiplagat third.
On the men’s side, Kipruto joined a large leading pack from the start and grabbed the outright lead with an 11-second margin over last year’s champion Seifu Tura Abdiwak of Ethiopia by the 40-kilometer mark in one of his trademark late surges.
The 2021 Boston Marathon winner hardly looked fatigued as he broke the tape in sunny conditions, seven years after his older brother Dickson Chumba won the race. Tura Abdiwak finished second in 2:04:49, and Kenyan John Korir took third.
“I’m so happy,” Kipruto said. “I’m here to take up from where [Chumba] left.”
Paralympic champion Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men’s wheelchair race in a blistering 1:25:20, building on a stellar 2022 that also brought him wins in Tokyo, Berlin and London.
American Susannah Scaroni stunned last year’s champion Tatyana McFadden on the women’s side in 1:45:48 for her first major marathon title.

Women’s ACHA Hockey Drops Series Finale To Indiana Tech – Lindenwood Athletics https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/womens-acha-hockey-drops-series-finale-to-indiana-tech-lindenwood-athletics/
Women’s ACHA hockey fell to Indiana Tech 6-3 in the series finale Saturday afternoon at SpeedOne Parkview Arena in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
The Lions displayed great defense early, keeping the Warriors off the board for most of the opening period, but a goal at 16:17 put Indiana Tech in the lead and the Warriors took a 2-0 advantage at 7:54 of the second. Lindenwood responded with great sustained pressure in the zone. After almost a minute, the Warriors gained possession, but Madison Teague took the puck away and found the back of the net on an unassisted play at the 9:57 mark. The Lions were back in the game, but a penalty gave Indiana Tech a power play late in the period. The Warriors capitalized to go up 3-1.
A flurry of activity marked the opening minutes of the third. Indiana Tech scored another power play goal 37-seconds in to lead 4-1, but then was called for a body checking penalty. Lindenwood won the faceoff and took a shot, but was denied. The Warriors countered on a rush and scored short-handed for a 5-1 advantage, but the Lions were still on the power play. They cashed it in and cut the deficit to three when Kim Turcotte was set up for a shot by Loki Antonio at the 2:36 mark.
The third period proved to be a physical and chippy one with 19-minutes of penalties called. Five of those came on a major call against Lindenwood. On the ensuing power play, Indiana Tech kept the puck in the zone for over three minutes and eventually scored at 7:16 to extend the lead to 6-2. The Lions scored the last goal of the game on another power play with 1:56 remaining in regulation. Jessica Wither and Antonio set up Kennedy Frank for the shot.
The Warriors outshot Lindenwood 39-24 and Maia Busi stopped 33 of the 39 shots she faced in a losing effort for the Lions in goal.
With the loss, Lindenwood fell to 1-3 on the season. The Lions go back on the road for a two-game series in Women’s Midwest College Hockey (WMCH) action against Minnesota October 15-16. The puck drops at 7 p.m. Saturday night and at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Rider Arena in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

A Risk-Taking GOP Moderate Trish DeBerry Is Fighting For Her Political Life In County Judge Race San Antonio Express-News
A Risk-Taking GOP Moderate, Trish DeBerry Is Fighting For Her Political Life In County Judge Race – San Antonio Express-News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/a-risk-taking-gop-moderate-trish-deberry-is-fighting-for-her-political-life-in-county-judge-race-san-antonio-express-news/
SAN ANTONIO — Trish DeBerry is used to taking risks and fighting battles she may not win.
Whether DeBerry, 57, can defeat her Democratic opponent, Peter Sakai, 67, a highly regarded former state district judge who spent 26 years on the bench, is an open question. The voters will decide that Nov. 8.
DeBerry believes a Republican can win the top elected position in this Democrat-dominated county, especially in a midterm election. In these contests, the president’s party usually takes hits. In the upcoming election, that would be President Joe Biden’s Democrats.
When DeBerry made her last-minute decision to run for county judge in December, Biden was in the doldrums because gas prices were outrageous, inflation was spiking and the president struggled to articulate his vision for the nation. Democrats looked like they were in for a drubbing in this year’s general elections.
DeBerry believed so strongly in a possible victory that she was willing to give up her job as Precinct 3 county commissioner 11 months into her term, a position she fought hard to win. The law required her to vacate her commissioner’s seat to run for county judge, which pays $189,000 per year.
Her optimism about the race hasn’t changed, but the political currents that seemed likely to benefit her have.
Biden’s approval ratings are climbing, though they remain below 50 percent, and he’s signed major legislation in the last year, including a $1.3 trillion infrastructure bill and another to combat climate change. Also, the price of gas in San Antonio has dropped to a little more than $3 a gallon on average from a high of $4.69 in June.
But DeBerry doesn’t play solely to the GOP’s staunchest, most conservative voters. She’s also making appeals to independents and moderates.
The longtime public relations executive and former TV journalist describes herself as a fiscal conservative and a social progressive — a Republican who is “right of center.”
She notes that some “hardcore Democrats” at the courthouse were among those who asked her to run for county judge when Wolff decided not to seek re-election.
She described rallying the support of Democrats on the five-member Commissioners Court to establish a family leave policy for county employees and to lower Bexar County’s property tax rate by a small amount. She was the sole Republican county commissioner.
“I think I have proven myself to operate more as a moderate Republican who is able to cultivate votes from Democrats,” DeBerry said during an interview at her Alamo Heights home.
“I’ve got serious relationships (with) moderate Republicans, conservative Republicans, independents, moderate Democrats, hardcore Democrats,” she said. “I’ve lived here too long not to have those relationships. I don’t think anybody sees me as a super-strident Republican.”
In 2001, DeBerry helped run District 7 City Councilman Ed Garza’s mayoral campaign against District 9 Councilman Tim Bannwolf, a business-backed conservative from the North Side. Garza won — and DeBerry lost the favor of some of her Republican friends and allies for a couple of years.
Garza plans to vote for her this November.
He said DeBerry is putting the needs of Bexar County residents before her party. He likes that she’s discussing poverty, education and the need to attract more industries in her campaign.
“Just the fact that she’s in tune with San Antonio’s poverty rate is, I think, a big step forward for any Republican,” said Garza, who served two terms as mayor and now serves on the San Antonio Independent School District’s board. “Right now, when times are so divisive, it’s refreshing to have candidates on either side take a stand on their values, not just on what the party dictates.”
DeBerry has outlined goals she’ll pursue if elected county judge. It’s the county’s highest elected position, one that requires leading Commissioners Court and overseeing a $2.8 billion annual budget and more than 5,000 county employees.
She aims to improve conditions at Bexar County’s jail for both detention officers and inmates. She also wants to explore moving the jail elsewhere to open up development opportunities for the city’s near West Side, where the lockup is now.
DeBerry wants to bring more property tax relief to homeowners, create more jobs, help sustain small businesses and lower poverty rates. She’s also called for consideration of a merger between the city’s Metropolitan Health District and the county’s health system, University Health, to reduce costs and ramp up the fight against diabetes, heart disease and obesity.
“I believe the future of this county is too important not to frame a platform and a vision for what we need to accomplish in the next 20 to 25 years,” she said. “And quite honestly, I don’t believe that anyone is crowned or is anointed without having to articulate a vision for what they want to accomplish.”
The county judge’s race has become contentious — though not as much between DeBerry and Sakai as between her and San Antonio trial lawyer Thomas J. Henry.
She is the target of a series of TV attack ads in which a narrator declares, “Trish DeBerry would crawl across steaming hot coals to be county judge, to keep serving herself.” A group called Friends of Bexar LLC paid more than $259,000 for those advertisements.
It was “dark money” — anonymous political donations to nonprofit groups set up to attack or bolster candidates.
Sakai has said his campaign isn’t involved in the dark money group, whose principals are unknown. But DeBerry has called on the Democrat to disavow the blistering ads. Without offering evidence, she also publicly accused Henry and his ad placement agency of being behind the ads.
Henry and The PM Group of San Antonio have vehemently denied DeBerry’s claims, which she leveled at a news conference on the Bexar County Courthouse steps Monday. Henry said he hasn’t given a “single penny” to either of the candidates running for county judge and accused her of making “false representations.”
So far — in a race defined mostly by undramatic policy disagreements and differences in style (between DeBerry’s high-energy, social media-infused campaigning and Sakai’s low-key, down-to-business approach) — the fight over the TV ads has been the only real source of heat.
“Life is short. I felt like this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” DeBerry said. “And I know it’s risky, and I know all the odds are stacked against me.”
If she wins, DeBerry will become only the second female county judge in Bexar County’s history. The first was Republican Cyndi Taylor Krier.

She was a latchkey kid raised by a hardworking single mom and a father in the Air Force. Her mother, who died in 2021, was a liberal Democrat, while her father has always been a staunch Republican.
DeBerry, the youngest of six children, grew up on Campobello Drive and attended Serna Elementary School on the Northeast Side. She later went to Garner Middle School. Her parents divorced when she was young.
“For the most part, it was my mom and I,” she recalled. “My mom worked full time in civil service out at Fort Sam Houston.
“I walked to school and walked home, did my chores around the house, did my homework. Was always someone (who) despite the circumstances — not the best of circumstances growing up — (was) self-motivated,” said DeBerry, who sometimes talks in choppy, incomplete sentences, as if she’s rushing to get her point across. “My dad wasn’t in the house for a very, very long time.”
She said the family got by on a bare-bones budget “especially when my parents divorced. Sometimes it was hand to mouth.”
DeBerry’s mother overcame a traumatic childhood, with alcoholic parents and time spent in abusive foster homes. She gave her children love and support she didn’t receive growing up. She also instilled the values of hard work and financial responsibility. “My mother used to say all the time, ‘If you count the pennies, the dollars will take care of themselves,’” DeBerry said.
“She was a dominant force in my life, for sure.”
When DeBerry was in the eighth grade, her mother married again and the family moved. DeBerry attended Churchill High School, where she graduated in 1983. She was crowned Miss Fiesta in 1984. She also played on softball teams for 10 years.

Adirondacks Might Now Be More A Fall Draw Than Summertime Times Union
Adirondacks Might Now Be More A Fall Draw Than Summertime – Times Union https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/adirondacks-might-now-be-more-a-fall-draw-than-summertime-times-union/
The summer season has always reigned supreme in terms of tourism in the Adirondacks in comparison to winter, fall and spring, also known as “mud season.”
Most locals and seasoned visitors know Labor Day as the “closing of the floodgates,” when many Adirondack communities transition from crowded shops and busy streets to a type of quiet that seems almost unsettling in comparison.
But that might be changing, according to shifts identified by the Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism (ROOST), which recently released its 2021 Leisure Travel Survey results. The annual study analyzes non-business travel to Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, Lake Placid, Essex and Hamilton counties.
For the first time, the percentage of travelers visiting the region during the fall months (30 percent) surpassed the percentage of summer visitors (26 percent).
The main reason for this increase may be attributed to not only the vibrant fall foliage, but that the Adirondacks is a drive-to destination for many, said Jane Hooper, ROOST communications manager.
“The Adirondacks are within a day’s drive for roughly one-quarter of the entire North American population, so for those who want a vacation but are reluctant to fly, the Adirondacks is an amazing option,” Hooper said. “In late 2021, we have the added issue of COVID – namely the loosening of travel restrictions. These factors all combined to make last fall one of the busiest that the region has experienced.”
The survey said about 25 percent of visitors were from outside New York.
After reviewing the ROOST survey, tourism/publicity directors Adele Burnett, from the town of Inlet, and Mike Farmer, from the town of Webb, were initially struck by the increase in fall visitors over summer travelers, but then agreed the findings lined up with similar patterns in their communities.
“Right away, you might think there should be way more tourists in summer than fall, but I am actually not surprised these numbers are close,” Burnett said. “With so many people purchasing seasonal homes in the area, it makes sense that more people consider themselves local.”
Farmer said he believes visitors were still riding the reopening wave in the fall of 2021. The clear, mild November 2021 weather also allowed for phenomenal viewing of the region’s fall foliage.
But the question remains going forward: Will seasonal businesses need to adjust and stay open later into the fall?
In Old Forge and Inlet, that remains to be seen.
“Our business owners have dealt with staff shortages, supply limitations and uncertainty, and they make it work,” Farmer said. “Staff and operating schedules are adjusted, so that everyone has the best experience possible. For the most part, visitors accept that and appreciate those efforts. It’s nice to go to the stadium and watch your favorite MLB team perform, but imagine if they had to play a double-header every day for a month.”
Burnett said many places in the Inlet area will close following Columbus/Indigenous People’s Day. However the community has achieved a balance in order to accommodate visitors and residents while allowing local workers a chance to recuperate.

Fort Myers Beach Home, Business Owners Can Return To Island On Sunday – NBC2 News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/fort-myers-beach-home-business-owners-can-return-to-island-on-sunday-nbc2-news/
FORT MYERS BEACH, Fl. (WBBH) – Nearly two weeks after Hurricane Ian delivered a devastating and historic blow to Fort Myers Beach, town leaders are ready for property owners to return to the island.
On Saturday, only people that own property north of the Times Square area were allowed back on the island and were required to be bussed over the Matanzas Pass Bridge.
Starting Sunday, anyone with property, renting, or who has a legitimate purpose to be on the island will be allowed back.
The Town of Fort Myers Beach made the decision on October 1 to close the island in order for search and rescue crews to complete their response. In total, 29 survivors were found, including one as recent as Thursday.
“In this kind of debris, and it’s nothing short of miraculous,” said Councilman Bill Veach. “I’ve heard an estimate of 80-90% of the structures on the island won’t be fit for habitation again.”
If you pick a street on Fort Myers Beach, you can walk down and see home after home either destroyed or severely damaged from Hurricane Ian.
“This is one street of dozens of dozens of streets,” Veach said.
Sunday will be an eye-opening experience for home and business owners, to say the least.
Here’s how the town plans on re-entering property owners:
Property owners between the Big Carlos Pass Bridge and Beach Theater on the south end of the island, or between Times Square and Bowditch Point Park on the north end of the island can enter beginning at 7 am.
Properties between the Beach Theater and Publix can enter after 8 am.
Properties between Publix and Town Hall can enter after 9 am.
Properties between Town Hall and Times Square can enter after 10 am.
“We’re just trying to get people on and off as efficiently as possible,” said Veach. “We don’t want a bumrush at 7 in the morning with everyone and their mothers because all you’re going to end up doing is waiting anyway.”
It’s the chance to grab what you need and even get a look at what it will take to rebuild, but not to move back in. While the town can’t stop you, there’s not much on the island for you.
No water. No power. No food. And there won’t be for quite some time.
“And it’s going to take a long time to get those things going.”
Longtime residents like Mike Carran Jr. don’t need all that. After all, he’s living in paradise.
“It’s paradise. It just took a little left turn for a while,” Carran Jr. said.
From the second flood of his beach house, there’s not even the slightest clue of the natural disaster outside.
“It’s comfortable. No, this is my home. This is home,” he said. “This is where I’m going to stay. This is where we raised our family.”
He’s in it for the long haul. How does he do it?
Daniel: “Did you ever go camping?
Gage: “I have”
Daniel: “Well, there you are. You got your answer.”
Unfortunately, he’s the outlier here. Many homes now look like Councilman Veach’s house: all but gone.
But don’t be mistaken. He and so many other islanders are committed to raising a new beachfront from the rubble. It may not be the one we know, but certainly one we’ll learn to love.
“Everybody likes the funky Fort Myers Beach. The little old beach cottages, the little old restaurants, that kind of stuff,” Veach said. “Unfortunately, Ian kind of washed away the funky. We are going to have to find a way to recreate something to keep it interesting.”

TDA and Texas schools set to promote healthy lifestyles and nutritious school meals
PUBLISHED ON October 9, 2022
“Supporting school nutrition is the first step in keeping Texas children healthy,” Commissioner Miller said. “I want every student to go to the cafeteria during National School Lunch Week and get a good meal with the nutrition they need for a full and productive day. Using this year’s theme, Get Your Day in Gear with a Healthy School Lunch, schools are making sure more students can shift into overdrive in the classroom and in life.” (Texas Department of Agriculture)
AUSTIN — Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller kicked off National School Lunch Week, a celebration of hard-working nutrition teams and the healthy meals served in schools. During the week of Oct. 10-14, schools across Texas will offer special menus and use Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA) resources to promote participation in the National School Lunch Program. TDA administers the program in Texas to provide more than 3 million lunches every school day.
“Supporting school nutrition is the first step in keeping Texas children healthy,” Commissioner Miller said. “I want every student to go to the cafeteria during National School Lunch Week and get a good meal with the nutrition they need for a full and productive day. Using this year’s theme, Get Your Day in Gear with a Healthy School Lunch, schools are making sure more students can shift into overdrive in the classroom and in life.”
TDA offers schools promotional materials they can use to get students engaged in learning about what nutritious foods are offered in their cafeteria during National School Lunch Week. This year, schools ordered 7,000 posters, 30,000 employee buttons, and 600,000 Enjoy Your Meal stickers from TDA. Also, morning announcements; special menus with attached recipes; electronic advertisements; and more are available for downloading at SquareMeals.org/NSLW.
Many schools have added TDA’s Farm Fresh Challenge to their efforts to increase student participation in the National School Lunch Program. Throughout October about 150 school districts and charter organizations will give millions of children the opportunity to learn about Texas agriculture by incorporating more Texas products into menus. Special menus curated by TDA support National School Lunch Week and the Farm Fresh Challenge with recipes using Texas agricultural products. These efforts are part of Commissioner Miller’s Farm Fresh Initiative and help Texas students associate healthy school meals with Texas agriculture.
TDA support for these efforts shows the cafeteria can become a classroom when young Texans eat fresh fruits and vegetables grown in Texas at school and learn about how Texas agriculture makes these meals possible. During National School Lunch Week TDA encourages everyone to recognize the role school nutrition plays in promoting healthy lifestyles for Texas children.

These third-down passes to Barkley behind the LOS are not working for New York whatsoever. Need to find another way to move the chains on the critical down.

New York has the 2nd-highest play-action rate in NFL this season behind Miami. No surprise the first big play for the Giants today comes off play-action.

Romeo Doubs is the unsung hero on that touchdown. Had a great block to give Lazard a lane to scamper to the end zone. The rookie also had a 22-yard catch earlier in the drive to move them into New York territory. The rookie is making plays all over. The McKinney 53-yard DPI was a killer for the Giants.

Another three-and-out for New York. The Packers had a ton of pressure on Jones up the middle on second-and-8 which forced him to throw it away. Then a little confusion backed them up on a delay of game penalty to put them in a third-and-13 situation. Similar to the previous drive, they tried going to Barkley on a screen pass, but it doesn’t go anywhere.

The Giants are suffocating the Packers offense. Rodgers doesn’t have much time to even get the pass off and when he does New York defenders are swarming fast. As the broadcast notes, looks like the Giants may have gotten away with a facemask penalty on third down.

Quick three-and-out for the Giants. Packers sniffed out that screen to Barkley on third down, so I doubt he would have been able to get the first even if he hauled in Jones’ pass.

Daniel Jones has 193 rushing yards this season (most by Giants QB through 4 games since 1950). His 18 rushing first downs this season are the most by QB through 4 games since Michael Vick in 2006. Let’s see if his ankle injury slows that rushing ability down at all.

Good bend but not break defense by the Giants to hold the Packers to a field goal on the opening drive. New York applied a ton of pressure on Rodgers on the third-and-5 attempt to force the field goal attempt. Earlier in the drive, Rodgers showed some fantastic footwork on a third-and-8 pass to Cobb for 35 yards to move the chains. Packers offense keeps flashing its potential.

The Green Bay Packers come into Week 5 tied with the Chicago Bears for the most all-time regular-season wins by an NFL franchise with 785. A win in London would make them the winningest franchise in league history. If Chicago falls to Minnesota later today, they’d stand alone.
A big reason for Green Bay’s eventual leap over Chicago comes from a surge beginning in 1992. Entering that year, the Bears had 85 more wins than the Packers. That’s thanks to the arrival of Brett Farve and the subsequent ascension of Aaron Rodgers, the Packers have enjoyed 30 years of Hall of Fame play at the quarterback position.

The Packers are winners of three straight games since losing their season opener against the Vikings. They’ve averaged 22.7 points per game during the streak while holding opponents to just 15.3 points.

The Giants threw for just 82 passing yards in their 20-12 win over the Bears, but also ran for a whopping 262 rushing yards — the most in any game since 2008. Saquon Barkley enters Week 5 with a league-high 463 rush yards this season, the most by any Giants player through four games since 1950. Daniel Jones’ 193 rush yards this season is also the most by a Giants quarterback through four games since 1950.

New York is 3-1 or better through the first four games of a season for just the first time since 2011, when they won Super Bowl XLV. Brian Daboll is the first head coach to start his Giants career 3-1 or better since Tom Coughlin in 2004.

You may be wondering why the Packers have NEVER played a regular season game internationally. Well, they have previously refused to take part in the international series because they did not want to lose a home game off its schedule.
The economic impact of a regular season game in Green Bay is estimated at $15 million. They technically could have been considered an option to be an away team for a club hosting an international game, but those clubs have also been against that since the lure of the Packers is a major draw — and effectively a guaranteed sellout — at their home stadiums.
With the NFL moving to a 17-game schedule, part of that change was also that every team will play an international game at least once during an eight-year period. That fell on the Packers this season. To read more on this, click here.

Night of the Ghoul
Writer – Scott Snyder
Artist – Francesco Francavilla
Scott Snyder and Francesco Francavilla have entertained and terrified comic book fans, now these two modern masters of horror collaborate for the first time ever on Night of The Ghoul, a bloody reimagining of horror monsters that celebrates classic creature features, while creating a contemporary new kind of horror story. Shot in 1936, “Night of the Ghoul” by director T.F. Merritt was meant to sit beside “Frankenstein” and “Dracula” as an instant classic. But the legendary film never made it to the silver screen. A mysterious studio fire destroyed the footage and killed the cast and crew at the wrap-party. No footage was ever recovered…until now. When Forest Inman, a horror film obsessive, stumbles across a forgotten canister of footage, he just might have discovered the remnants of “Night of the Ghoul.” This discovery sends Forest on a dark odyssey to the California desert, where he’s warned by a mysterious old man that the film’s ghoul is far more than a work of fiction: it’s a very real monster who plans to kill him. Night of The Ghoul is a dazzling work of horror, intercutting between the present-day narrative and the story of the lost film (drawn by Francavilla in stunning black and white).

When a telephone operator says that a big crowd will be awaiting him in nearby Barnville, Preston races over. Instead of eager clientele, though, he finds himself crashing a wedding, and the party isn’t exactly thrilled. But when Claire, the would-be-bride, decides to make an early getaway, Preston unexpectedly becomes a Clyde to this vengeful Bonnie. Along the way they bond, confessing their secrets and engaging in a romance for the ages. Will all that change when the Pinkerton agent following close by finally closes in on them? Cardano Price Forecast – Can ADA Become 2022 Best Performer? – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/cardano-price-forecast-can-ada-become-2022-best-performer-cryptonews/
Cardano price forecast is mostly neutral as the altcoin consolidates near the $0.4166 triple bottom support area. ADA has formed a descending triangle pattern on the daily timeframe, indicating a bearish bias among investors.
Cardano was among the few digital currencies hit particularly hard during the second and third quarters’ bear market. The value of ADA has fallen dramatically during the previous two months, falling more than 25%.
Can ADA become the best performer in 2022? Let’s find out!
Cardano Seeks NFT Community’s Interest
Despite unfavorable market conditions, the ADA team has been striving to attract attention from the NFT groups. Unfortunately for Cardano, their efforts were futile because the blockchain couldn’t generate significant NFT sales.
According to the graph, Cardano NFT sales have been relatively flat since September 28th. NFT sales skyrocketed on this date. The launch of a Cardano NFT gaming project could explain the rise.
Cardano NFT Sales – Source: Santiment
Cardano’s DeFi Activity Continues to Decline
Declining DeFi activity could be another aspect working against ADA’s development. There was a significant drop in ADA’s TVL (total volume locked) value during the past month. Cardano’s total TVL was $135.39 million on August 1st, which peaked at $326 million on March 24th.
As of this writing, its TVL was $75.32 million, down 0.31% from the previous day. The Cardano team can increase the project’s survival prospects by focusing on expansion in the NFT and DeFi industries. Bearish indicators currently exceed bullish ones, making a bright future for Cardano seem unlikely.
Cardano’s Founder Bashes the XRP Community
In a recent tweet, Cardano co-founder and chief architect Charles Hoskinson vented his anger at the XRP community, saying he no longer wanted to interact with them.
After XRP supporters on Twitter started posting about “digging dirt” on the Input-Output CEO, Hoskinson accused them of propagating “conspiracies” about him.
Whereas the Ethereum co-founder has stated his opinion that most layer-1 protocols aren’t securities, he has criticized people who target current and former government workers and accuse the US Securities and Exchange Commission of corruption without providing evidence.
Hoskinson argued, “Howie has nothing to do with individual corruption.”
The founder of Cardano emphasized the futility of anger, adding that “cynicism” and “bullying” are similarly fruitless.
Cardano Price Review & Tokenomics
Cardano’s current price is $0.423166, with a 24-hour trading volume of $288 million. Cardano has fallen by 0.46% in the last 24 hours.
CoinMarketCap currently ranks #8 with a live market cap of $14.5 billion. There are 34.26 billion ADA coins in circulation, with a maximum supply of 45 ADA coins.
Cardano Price Forecast – Can ADA Become 2022 Best Performer?
Cardano has formed a descending triangle pattern, providing immediate support near $0.4166. Because descending triangle patterns tend to break on the lower side, the odds of a bearish breakout remain fairly strong.
The lagging indicator, the 50-day moving average, is extending an immediate resistance near the $0.4560 level, keeping Cardano in a bearish trend. The leading indicators RSI and MACD, on the other hand, are also indicating a bearish bias.
A spike in selling pressure could push the downtrend all the way to the $0.3915 or $0.3660 support levels.
On the upside, the downward trendline may extend resistance near $0.4466, and a break above this can push ADA towards resistance levels of $0.4689, $0.4895, or $0.5245.
Cardano does not appear to be the best performer in 2022 based on the fundamental indicators discussed above; however, a few altcoins are staying in the spotlight due to their massive performance. Let’s go over them quickly.
Cardano Alternatives – Tamadoge & IMPT Pumping
Over 165% from its yearly low of $0.01683, the meme coin Tamadoge is gaining popularity. OpenSea now sells the Ultra-rare Tamadoge NFTs, with a start price of 1 WETH. Tamadoge has become the 3rd biggest meme coin in the crypto space.
After only six days of the presale, the project’s native currency, the IMPT token, has already raised an incredible $2.4 million, having sold 133.36 tokens.
Even though the blockchain-based carbon credit marketplace began its auction during a bear market for cryptocurrencies, demand for the marketplace token remained high.

What Did Alabama Escaping Texas A&M Tell Us About Jalen Milroe, Rest Of Season? – The Athletic https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/what-did-alabama-escaping-texas-am-tell-us-about-jalen-milroe-rest-of-season-the-athletic/
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Nick Saban called for his Alabama team to embrace adversity. There was plenty of it Saturday, much of it self-inflicted.
The No. 1 Crimson Tide’s game against Texas A&M caused more anxiety than necessary. More heart palpitations, too. Another effort like the 60 minutes put forth Saturday night, and Alabama will enter the loss column sooner rather than later. And later could be coming as soon as next weekend in a trip to Tennessee. No Bryce Young, no threat of a consistent passing game, four turnovers and two missed field goals did not yield the best results, and a repeat will not get it done on Rocky Top.
Yet it somehow yielded a win against Texas A&M, as the Crimson Tide (6-0, 3-0 SEC) pulled out a 24-20 goal-line stand, slop-fest victory with Jalen Milroe starting in place of the injured Young. But not by much.
Oddly enough, the offense did plenty to win comfortably, with 288 yards rushing and six plays of 25 yards or more. It also did enough to lose with four turnovers, its most in a game since the home loss to Ole Miss in 2015 (five). Every time it seemed the Crimson Tide would pull away, a turnover or missed opportunity in the red zone allowed the Aggies to stay in the game.

How Trump And Covid-19 Made Social Media “censorship” A Partisan Issue – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/how-trump-and-covid-19-made-social-media-censorship-a-partisan-issue-the-washington-post/
Online content moderation wasn’t always a partisan issue. That began to change in 2016.

Early last year, amid mounting criticism that social media was spreading disinformation about covid-19, Facebook expanded an unprecedented campaign to police falsehoods by banning what it called “debunked claims” about the virus. Among them: The claim that covid was “man-made” and had leaked from a lab in Wuhan, China.
To the Biden administration and the scientific establishment, Facebook’s efforts to rein in misinformation were too little, too late, given how its network had helped false and damaging claims to go viral in the first place. But others complained that the crackdowns squelched legitimate debate about the frustrating performance of public health authorities — a view that was partly vindicated when China’s lack of transparency prompted prominent scientists to declare the lab-leak theory “viable” and demand further investigation.
In May 2021, barely three months after it imposed the ban, Facebook backtracked: “In light of ongoing investigations into the origin of Covid-19 and in consultation with public health experts,” the company said, “we will no longer remove the claim that Covid-19 is man-made from our apps.”
What people can and can’t say online — and the role of Big Tech in making those calls — has emerged as a critical fault line in American politics. The left cries for content moderation to tamp down disinformation, racism and misogyny. The right decries that as censorship and demands the right to free speech.
In recent months, several flash points have brought this battle to the fore. Last week, the Supreme Court agreed to hear a case that accuses YouTube of abetting terrorism by recommending content from the Islamic State. Last month, a federal court upheld a Texas law that would prevent social media platforms from removing or limiting posts on the basis of political viewpoint.
Meanwhile, the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, is pushing to close a deal that would give him sole control of Twitter, whose decision to ban President Donald Trump after the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, has reverberated as perhaps the single most divisive act of content moderation in internet history. Musk has said he would reinstate Trump.
“We’re approaching a pivotal moment for online speech,” said Daphne Keller, who directs the Program on Platform Regulation at Stanford University’s Cyber Policy Center. “The political pressures on content moderation have increased tremendously.”
How online forums set and enforce rules for what users can post wasn’t always so divisive. When the consumer internet was born in the mid-1990s, lawmakers in both parties shared a desire to see American tech firms thrive. That consensus survived early battles over pornography, copyright infringement, breastfeeding photos and terrorist propaganda.
But as in so many realms of American society, the 2016 election marked the beginning of the end of that bipartisan comity.
Christopher Cox, a former Republican congressman from California, now serves on the board of Netchoice, a tech industry lobbying group that is fighting the Texas law. Cox said he can understand conservatives’ frustration with some of the platforms’ decisions, which he called an “abuse of power.”
But the remedy is not to give more power over speech to the state, he argued, “Politicians exercising control over the political speech of others is a very dangerous recipe.”
Protecting ‘the little guy’
In 1995, Cox helped craft the provision that paved the legal path for today’s internet giants to moderate online speech. At the time, the political stakes seemed so low that the national media barely noticed.
The consumer internet was just blossoming, with millions of Americans beginning to log on to services such as CompuServe, Prodigy, and AOL. To the extent most lawmakers considered online speech at all, their chief concern was limiting the availability of pornography to minors.
Cox and Rep. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) had a different concern. Earlier that year, a libel judgment against Prodigy held that its attempt to police its forums made it responsible for users’ content. Cox and Wyden worried the judgment would stifle the fledgling internet.
So they hashed out a statute that gave online service providers broad latitude to host, distribute and moderate content posted by users without being held liable when they posted something illegal. Part of a broader bill called the Communications Decency Act, it came to be known simply by its location: Section 230.
In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Wyden, now a senator, recalled that he saw the internet companies as “the little guy,” and wanted to give them leeway to develop their innovative technologies without being squashed by heavy-handed regulations. He thought empowering them to moderate their own sites would lead to a cleaner, safer internet without the need for government censorship of online speech.
Cox, in a separate interview, added: “The question is who’s in charge. There are going to be decisions made about what content is on these websites. Should the government be in charge of it? There are all sorts of reasons that would be a bad idea. It’s subject to all sorts of abuse.”
Early court decisions went on to interpret Section 230 even more broadly than Cox and Wyden had anticipated, establishing sweeping immunity for user-posted content. That set the stage for the rise of sites like Yahoo, Google, MSN. Later came YouTube, which is owned by Google, and Facebook. They could host, aggregate, and organize vast pools of user content without having to worry too much, from a legal standpoint, about whether it might be false, hurtful, or even dangerous.
The result was a potent business model that, compared with traditional media, dispensed with paid content creators in favor of unpaid ordinary users, and replaced paid editors with software algorithms designed to surface the most relevant, engaging or tantalizing content.
Yet the consumer internet was never an unfettered free-speech zone. The most successful online platforms discovered early that they had to make and enforce basic rules or they’d be overrun by pornography, spam, scams, harassment and hate speech — and that would be bad for business.
Even when an internet forum starts with a goal of allowing freewheeling discourse, “they quickly run into the inevitable fact that you have to moderate in order to have a commercially viable and user-friendly product,” said Evelyn Douek, a Stanford law professor who researches online speech regulations.
The need to screen and review millions of posts per day on sites like YouTube and Facebook gave rise to a shadow industry of commercial content moderation involving huge teams of workers spending their days making rapid-fire calls about whether to take down posts that users have flagged as offensive or obscene. To preserve the illusion of a “free-speech zone,” tech companies tend to distance themselves from that work, often outsourcing it to poorly compensated contractors in far-flung locales, said Sarah T. Roberts, author of “Behind the Screen: Content Moderation in the Shadows of Social Media.”
Even so, some decisions proved too thorny or consequential for tech companies to sweep under the rug.
In 2006, a shocking video appeared on the then-new YouTube: Grainy and shaky, the amateur footage showed deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein being hanged by members of the new Iraqi government, some of whom shouted insults in his final moments. The hanging had been closed to the media; the video exposed a vengeful and undignified execution at odds with official reports.
The decision of whether to leave the video up or take it down fell to Google’s deputy general counsel, a young lawyer named Nicole Wong. “What we ended up deciding was that the video of the execution was actually a historic moment, and it was actually important that it be shared and seen,” Wong said in a 2018 conference.
Two years later, an angry group of moms protested outside the Palo Alto offices of the three-year-old social media site Facebook, which had been taking down breastfeeding photos for violating its rule against nudity. The furor spurred Facebook to develop its first internal rule book for what users could and couldn’t post, drawing fine-grained, if somewhat arbitrary, distinctions to delineate between wholesome and prurient images, among other things.
Previous content policies had amounted to, “If it makes you feel bad, take it down,” former safety lead Charlotte Willner said. She recalled that one of the guiding motivations amid the lack of regulation of online content was executives’ desire not to run afoul of powerful people, especially public officials who might try to sue or regulate them.
Despite the occasional flare-ups, the big platforms cultivated an image as guardians of free speech abroad — one Twitter official boasted in 2012 that his firm was “the free-speech wing of the free-speech party” — while maintaining a studied political neutrality at home.
But as social media’s influence on politics and social mores has grown, it has become clearer that free speech for some users could mean real harm for others.
In 2014, large subcultures of angry, mostly male, gamers targeted a handful of women in the video-game industry and media with vicious, coordinated online threats, which at times spilled into real-world attacks. That movement, known as GamerGate, challenged tech companies’ claims to neutrality, because it pitted the free-speech claims of one group of users against t...
Creating our Future Castroville Looks To Shape The Sprawl And Preserve Its Heritage San Antonio Report
Creating ‘our Future,’ Castroville Looks To Shape The Sprawl And Preserve Its Heritage – San Antonio Report https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/creating-our-future-castroville-looks-to-shape-the-sprawl-and-preserve-its-heritage-san-antonio-report/
Les Tschirhart’s ancestors arrived in Texas in 1845, and today he lives on the land near Castroville that has been in his family for 135 years. The home his great grandfather built is now the local chamber of commerce office.
At age 83, he and wife Patsy still speak the language of those early pioneers from Alsace. If they could see Castroville now, “they would think it’s something,” Tschirhart said laughing.
In the next three years, more homes and businesses will be built in Castroville and the surrounding farmlands — in six active developments with at least 2,500 homes and another 200 acres of commercial development — than in the 178 years since the town’s founding.
That concerns Darrin Schroeder, the first-term mayor of the picturesque town west of San Antonio, as the boundary between Castroville and the fast-growing far West Side of San Antonio becomes blurred.
He revealed those construction numbers at a recent town hall meeting, inviting area residents with a letter stating that these structures will be the “visual backdrop of our lives and will outlast us by many generations.”
Already, islands of asphalt-shingled roofs are spreading across what was once fertile farmland to supply an ever-increasing demand for housing. At least 15 suburban neighborhoods are in various stages of development to the north and south of U.S. Highway 90 West. Multifamily complexes are also growing.
Commercial and retail development has followed. A Walmart Supercenter opened in 2017 and a national hotel chain is planning to build nearby.
The problem of urban sprawl is nothing new to bedroom communities in Bexar County, along Interstate 10 toward Boerne and along Interstate 35 heading north to New Braunfels and Austin — one of the fastest-growing corridors in the nation.
As more and more developers acquire land around Castroville, Schroeder and council members feel a sense of urgency to get ahead of the sprawl by knowing what to require from developers. “We have a small window to take charge of our destiny,” he wrote in a recent letter to residents.

Shaping a future
At one of four lectures hosted recently by the City of Castroville and the Castroville Conservation Society, Schroeder told the 100 or so people gathered at the historic Elsass Hall that it was possible for them to manage development, preserve the city’s heritage and shape its future.
In the process, they would ensure not just the historical nature and charm of the built environment but also the sense of community it fosters.
“We need your participation,” he told residents, “because this is something that you’re going to be doing together.”
The City of Castroville has embarked on an effort to amend its comprehensive plan, create a city character and design guide, update its Unified Development Code and use development agreements to encourage better planning. The city has contracted with Bryce Cox, a city planner with an Austin-based firm, to help lead those initiatives.
Still, Schroeder wants the council and its constituents to get smart about development in general, and recently invited a host of experts to town for a lecture series on planning, architecture and preservation.
Keeping the essence of Castroville
During a talk in August, urban planner and architect Steve Oubre heaped praise on Castroville’s historic town center and its 19th-century founder Henri Castro of France.
The classical grid of homes and mix of land uses Castro designed in 1844 imitates a European village. It stands in sharp contrast to modern-day city plans created under the prevalent Euclidian zoning that divides up land by specific uses and leads to socioeconomic segregation and car-centric development.
“Henri Castro was not a planner, but he was someone who had come from Europe and had lived the success of a plan like this,” Oubre said. “So when you say, ‘I want to keep Castroville, Castroville,’ you need to understand the impact that this plan has on your lives.”

Castroville resident William Nicoll said he grew up living in the Netherlands, England, France and Spain, and he was attracted to the town 30 miles west of San Antonio because of its walkability.
“I don’t drive much. I actually work next to my house,” said the master carpenter. “I walk to the coffee shop. I really didn’t like living in the city before this.”
The center of old town Castroville can be duplicated in future development, said Oubre, who in addition to his work with the city is on the development team for the transit-oriented Vicinia under development in far Northwest San Antonio. He’s an acolyte of Andres Duany, a pioneer of the New Urbanism concept.
“If we are successful … this will be a model that a lot of smaller towns in and around Texas can utilize,” Oubre said. “There are a lot of places [that] really don’t want to become the suburban places of San Antonio or Dallas. They want to stay where they are but ‘place-wise,’ and this is that opportunity.”
Architectural gems
The unique architectural styles in Castroville, where the whitewashed walls and pitched roofs of almost 100 historical structures remain standing, should also be replicated, said architectural historian Kathryn O’Rourke, a professor of art history at Trinity University.
Appreciation for how the architecture fits into its landscape goes back to Castroville’s earliest days, she said. In 1854, Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture and designer of New York City’s Central Park, visited Castroville and wrote that “the cottages are scattered prettily,” much like a village in France’s upper Rhone Valley.
Noted midcentury architect O’Neil Ford also was impressed with what he saw, noting the beauty and simplicity of German vernacular architecture in Castroville and how it was adapted to Texas. Ford would be so inspired by the style that it can be found repeated in some of his later designs.
A group of residents even banded together in 2021 to preserve what they could of the architecture by forming a private investment fund to redevelop the downtown.
So far, they have bought or leased several historic buildings, including a former meat market, an old saloon and a 1940s-era movie theater, with plans to restore the structures and house food and beverage and other tenants that will serve Castroville residents and visitors.
Housing and highways
In the public program series that Schroeder coined as the “Journey Forward,” Oubre and O’Rourke were followed by two others — Vincent Michael, executive director of the Conservation Society of San Antonio, and John Anderson, a town planner and small-scale developer.
Michael explained how the City of San Antonio has applied zoning ordinances to help preserve historic structures by establishing historic districts.
The Castroville Historic District, which includes a dozen properties, is recognized as such by the National Park Service and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. The area roughly bounded on three sides by the Medina River is also protected as a state-recognized historic district.
Preservation isn’t just about rules and standards, Michael said. “It’s a process. And you right now are in the middle of the process. It’s a process whereby a community determines what elements of its past it wants in its future.”
As for the future, Anderson warned that one significant element absent from today’s development patterns, in both San Antonio and Castroville, is midscale housing. He calls it the “missing middle.”
Duplexes, fourplexes, cottage courts and courtyard apartments are becoming harder to build due to zoning limitations and financing hurdles. Anderson encouraged citizens to support new zoning laws and development within Castroville that would address the gap and reflect changing demographics.
Anderson also pointed to the increasingly congested Highway 90 West as “a corridor of crap” that runs through the middle of town, suggesting that Castroville — and its property values — could be better served by a pedestrian-friendly, tree-lined boulevard.
The highway corridor — which has become home to chain stores, fast-food restaurants and gas stations — emerged as one of the biggest problems the mayor hopes to solve by reducing its visual impact on the city.

‘Preserve what we have’
A similar effort to preserve the unique character of Castroville emerged 20 years ago when the Texas Historical Commission (THC) developed a plan with community input.
Priscilla Garrett, a Castroville resident for 27 years, serves on the historic landmark commission and was involved in that planning process. “It kind of got shoved back,” she said of the plan. “It wasn’t because people didn’t want to preserve what we have, but there’s always been [this opinion]: Don’t tell me what to do with my property.”
What’s different this time around, she said, is that the six-member City Council seems more united to make things happen. “What I think is waking some people up now is what’s coming at us.”
What the THC and community produced in 2002 was a “solid plan,” in Schroeder’s view, but with six goals and 42 sub-goals, was trying to accomplish too much. “We’ve narrowed it down to three things,” he said.
The first two will have the city focus on managing both infill development and development on land where no previous structures exist through form-based zoning — regulating land development to achi...
Through Election Zinke Faces Heat For Investigations While At Interior Independent Record
Through Election, Zinke Faces Heat For Investigations While At Interior – Independent Record https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/through-election-zinke-faces-heat-for-investigations-while-at-interior-independent-record/
Investigations during Ryan Zinke’s time as Secretary of the Department of the Interior have been a major issue in the race for Montana’s new western congressional district.
Zinke has faced accusations of wrongdoing and dishonesty from both Republicans in June’s primary, and now from his Democratic opponent Monica Tranel leading up to November’s general election. They’ve pointed to two reports from internal agency investigators as well as the sheer volume of investigations, numbering from 15-20.
Yet Zinke has insisted the investigations amount to nothing more than political theater. He points out his opponents are free to file complaints that then trigger an investigation, including over frivolous matters, such as his socks, dog and horse. He has been repeatedly cleared once investigations conclude, he says.
“You have weaponized investigators that are biased, that can run amok, in my case, 18 investigations on my socks, my dog, etc, etc, etc.” Zinke said in a recent debate. “And they all lead to no conflict of interest, no breaking of rules and laws.”
And in answering questions about reports accusing him of attempting to mislead investigators, Zinke has maligned the conclusions and brought accusations himself of political double standards.
“After five years, hundreds of thousands of dollars spent, you know what the report concluded? That I didn’t follow the employee handbook and had a lack of candor. I don’t know that means. I answered their questions. They just didn’t like my answers,” Zinke said at a recent debate.
Zinke resigned after two years as secretary, saying at the time the investigations had become a distraction to the mission of the agency. He has disputed that he was asked by former President Donald Trump to resign.
Tranel has repeatedly zeroed in on the investigations in campaign ads, interviews and recent debates and has encouraged voters to read the reports. The conclusions are serious, she says.
“Don’t take our word for it,” she said at a recent debate. “That’s exactly what they do say — that Ryan Zinke lied to investigators.”
The exact number of investigations is somewhat a matter of definition. For example, the same complaint might be investigated by more than one entity, or look at more than one potential violation. The candidates both cited 18 as the number during a recent debate.
Lack of candor
In late August, Interior’s Office of Inspector General released a report stating Zinke made statements to investigators “with the overall intent to mislead them” over conversations he had with lobbyists, lawmakers and other officials regarding a bid by two Indian tribes to operate a casino in Connecticut.
Both Zinke and his former chief of staff, Scott Hommel, “presented an inaccurate version of the circumstances in which (Interior) made key decisions” on the casino project, the report said. “As a result, we concluded that Secretary Zinke and (Hommel) did not comply with their duty of candor when questioned,” the report reads.
A letter from Zinke’s attorney, included in the report, said the finding that Zinke lacked candor was “wrong and without merit.”
Another inspector general report released in February stated Zinke misused his position at Interior to advance a commercial development project in Whitefish and misled agency ethics official about his involvement.
Zinke, after being named Interior Secretary, said he would step away from the Great Northern Veterans Peace Park Foundation under ethics rules barring involvement with nonprofits. He declined interview requests from federal investigators, who concluded that Zinke engaged in “repeated, ongoing substantive negotiations” with developers based on emails and text messages from others involved in the project, according to the report.
Investigators also concluded that Zinke used agency staff to perform non-official duties tied to the project, such as printing documents and arranging a meeting.
Zinke’s campaign called release of the report a “political hit job,” and said the area is used currently as a sledding hill.
The inspector general’s findings in both cases were referred to the U.S. Justice Department, which declined to prosecute the cases.
Hatch Act
The Hatch Act prohibits most federal employees from using their positions for political purposes, although it is enforced as agency guidelines rather than criminally. Democratic lawmakers and outside groups made several complaints against Zinke alleging violations.
In one complaint, federal investigators concluded Zinke violated the Hatch Act when he posted a photo of his socks displaying a political slogan.
This screen shot posted Tuesday, June 26, 2018, on the official Twitter account of U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke shows him wearing socks with an image of President Trump and the campaign slogan “Make America Great Again,” which has been blacked out on the photo, during an official event in Keystone, S.D.
U.S. Interior Department via AP
The Office of Special Counsel found that a photo posted to official social media accounts of Zinke’s “Make America Great Again” socks violated the Hatch Act.
Investigators did not pursue the matter further after Zinke deleted the Tweet, The Hill reported.
Zinke announced that Florida would be exempt from plans to expand offshore drilling, but Democrats questioned whether the exemption was meant to boost Scott’s run for the U.S. Senate.
Interior officials told CNN the appearance was official business and complied with ethics rules.
Grijalva’s office provided investigators’ response to the Montana State News Bureau. The response from April 2021 said the case was being closed, explaining that investigators reviewed documents that alone were not enough to draw a conclusion. It went on to say Zinke and others were no longer in government or available to interview.
The complaint alleged Hatch Act violations due to the cost of a charter flight to the speech and Zinke’s ties to team owner Bill Foley, a contributor to Zinke’s political campaigns. But investigators concluded that the donations alone were not enough to constitute a violation.
The Office of Special Counsel also cleared Zinke of travel violations for several other events that included both official and political events. Investigators found the travel was properly documented and approved.
Among the travel issues raised by Democrats was a government helicopter flight that allowed him to return to Washington, D.C., in time to go on a planned horseback ride with then-Vice President Mike Pence and Missouri Sen. Roy Blunt.
In March of 2019, CNN reported that Zinke had been cleared by investigators following allegations that he made the announcement of the awarding of a grant to influence a Pennsylvania election.
In February 2018, Zinke announced grants awarded for mine cleanup at an event attended by Republican candidate for Congress Rick Saccone, then a state senator.
The Office of Special Counsel “investigation found no evidence that you violated the Hatch Act during this event,” CNN reported.
Travel policy
A 2018 inspector general report found that Ryan Zinke’s wife, Lola Zinke, was allowed to ride in government vehicles with him in violation of agency rules.
Interior ethics officials preapproved the trips where Lola Zinke traveled with him in vehicles, boats and Air Force One. That violated rules, but investigators found trips were approved by officials who believed the secretary was not bound by the policy. The Zinkes reimbursed the department for the travel expenses, ABC News reported.
The same OIG report found Ryan Zinke asked department officials to research the implications of making Lola Zinke an official volunteer with the department. He denied to investigators that the purpose was to ease the travel and reimbursement restrictions and she ultimately was never named a volunteer, the report states.
The report also investigated the use of an agency staffer for security purposes during a two-week vacation. Investigators found that the department assigned security due to the Zinkes’ travel through Istanbul, but it was not directly requested by the secretary.
In one section of the report, investigators say they looked into whether a department employee who was resigning had insinuated Zinke required her to walk his dog. The former employee said the allegation was untrue and that she liked the dog and volunteered to walk it. Zinke confirmed to investigators that he occasionally brought the dog to work, the report states.
Other investigations
In April of 2018, congressional Democrats called for an investigation after references to human-caused climate change were removed from a National Park Service report.
Zinke repeatedly denied he had any role in changing a report on the risks of rising seas and flooding at 118 coastal parks.
Interior policy sets out a process for handling scientific information to ensure that findings are credible and “free of political influence,” ABC News reported.
Democrats in their complaint questioned whether that policy was being followed, or if politics influenced the changes to the report. The report was later published in full.
Grijalva’s office again provided investigators’ response from June 2018 to the Montana State News Bureau. Investigators said they worked in concert with Interior’s scientific integrity panel because they lacked the expertise to analyze the underlying science. The panel had expressed no significant concerns of undue political influence, and investigators said they would continue to work closely with the panel should any issues arise.
In 2017 there were news reports that Zinke threatened to withhold resources from Alaska after Sen. Lisa Murkowski voted against her party’s efforts to ...

China lashes out at latest U.S. export controls on chips
BEIJING (AP) — China has criticized the latest U.S. decision to tighten export controls that would make it harder for China to obtain and manufacture advanced computing chips, calling it a violation of international economic and trade rules that will “isolate and backfire” on the U.S. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson accused the U.S. of abusing its export control measures to maliciously block and suppress Chinese companies. She spoke after the U.S. on Friday updated export controls that included adding certain advanced, high-performance computing chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment to its list. Washington says it’s part of efforts to protect its national security.
Families seek truth as Airbus, Air France face crash trial
PARIS (AP) — The families of the 228 people killed in 2009 when their storm-tossed Air France flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris slammed into the Atlantic finally have a chance at justice. Aviation industry heavyweights Airbus and Air France are charged with manslaughter in a trial that opens Monday over the crash in 2009 of Flight 447. The worst plane crash in Air France history killed people of 33 nationalities and had lasting impact. It led to changes in air safety regulations, how pilots are trained and the use of airspeed sensors. But it almost didn’t come to trial. The companies insist they are not criminally responsible.
Blast on bridge to Crimea hurts Russian supply lines, pride
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin is moving to tighten security along a key bridge to Crimea after an explosion caused part of the bridge to collapse. The Kerch bridge is an important supply artery for the Kremlin’s faltering war effort in southern Ukraine. The 12-mile-long bridge is also a symbol of Russia’s claim to control the territory, which it annexed from Ukraine in 2014. Nobody has claimed responsibility for the blast early Saturday. Russian authorities say it was caused by a truck bomb, which set some train tanker cars on fire. Train and automobile traffic on the bridge were suspended temporarily. Automobile service was restored later in the day on just part of the bridge.
Thai police investigating CNN crew’s coverage of attack
UTHAI SAWAN, Thailand (AP) — Thai police are investigating a report that a CNN crew inappropriately entered the day care center while reporting on the aftermath of the massacre in the building that left more than 20 preschoolers dead. The head of the local township administration in northeastern Thailand told reporters Sunday that he had submitted his report alleging unauthorized entry onto the government property and that police were investigating. Authorities began looking into the incident after a Thai reporter posted an image on social media of two members of the crew leaving the scene. CNN tweeted that the crew had entered with permission from local health officials but later said it understands that the officials were not authorized to do so. Police say the journalists’ visas were revoked.
Ukrainian authorities take stock of ruins in liberated Lyman
LYMAN, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian authorities are just beginning to sift through the wreckage of the devastated city of Lyman in eastern Ukraine. They are assessing the humanitarian toll and possibility of war crimes from a months-long Russian occupation. It’s still unclear how many died in the city since it was overrun by Russian forces in May. But authorities say Lyman has become a “humanitarian crisis” which could still hold further grim discoveries. The Donetsk governor on Friday said that two burial sites had been found in Lyman including around 200 individual civilian graves and a mass grave with an unknown number of bodies.
UN: Ukraine nuclear power plant loses external power link
BERLIN (AP) — The U.N. nuclear watchdog says that Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the biggest in Europe, has lost its last remaining external power source as a result of renewed shelling and is now relying on emergency diesel generators. The International Atomic Energy Agency said that the plant’s link to a 750-kilovolt line was cut at around 1 a.m. Saturday. It cited official information from Ukraine as well as reports from IAEA experts at the site, which is held by Russian forces. All six reactors at the plant are shut down but they still require electricity for cooling and other safety functions. The IAEA said plant engineers have begun work to repair the damaged power line.
Sabotage hits trains in north Germany, forcing 3-hour halt
BERLIN (AP) — Authorities in Germany say a key train communications system has been targeted by sabotage. That forced both passenger and cargo trains to halt for nearly three hours across a swath of northwestern Germany on Saturday. Operator Deutsche Bahn said the problem was a “failure of the digital train radio system” and it had been resolved but that some disruptions could still be expected. Germany’s transport minister said cables that are “essential for handling railway traffic safely” were deliberately severed at two separate locations. He said Germany’s federal police were investigating the attack.
Death toll rises to 10 in blast at gas station in Ireland
LONDON (AP) — Authorities say 10 people have been killed in an explosion that destroyed a gas station in a small village in northwest Ireland. Police say the victims were four men, three women, two teenagers and a girl of primary school age. Eight people have been hospitalized. Police investigating the cause of the blast say evidence suggests it was accidental. The blast tore through the Applegreen service station in Creeslough in County Donegal on Friday. Emergency responders from Ireland and neighboring Northern Ireland are involved in the search and rescue operation. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said it was one of the “darkest of days for Donegal and the entire country.”
Latest in string of strikes brings most UK trains to a halt
LONDON (AP) — Most train services across Britain have been canceled as thousands of rail workers staged the latest in a string of strikes over jobs, pay and working conditions. Saturday’s 24-hour walkout by 40,000 cleaners, signalers, maintenance workers and station staff was the third in a week. The action is part of a surging wave of strikes from workers seeking pay raises to keep up with inflation that is running at almost 10%. Only about 20% of train services are expected to run with disruption spilling over into Sunday morning. Unions accuse the government of preventing train companies from making a deal to end the dispute. The government denies that and has urged unions to work with employers and “not against them.”
What Friday’s jobs report means for Fed’s inflation fight
WASHINGTON (AP) — For most Americans, Friday’s September jobs report was welcome news: Businesses kept hiring at a brisk pace, unemployment fell back to a half-century low and average pay rose. Yet for the Federal Reserve, the jobs figures highlight how little progress they’re making in their fight against inflation. With the Fed more likely to keep raising borrowing costs rapidly, the risk of recession will also rise. Employers did pull back slightly on hiring last month, and average wage gains slowed. But economists say neither is falling fast enough for the Fed to slow its inflation-fighting efforts.
