She spoke after the U.S. on Friday updated export controls that included adding certain advanced, high-performance computing chips and semiconductor manufacturing equipment to its list. Washington says it’s part of efforts to protect its national security. Crimea bridge blast damages key Russian supply route; 3 dead KHARKIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian authorities say a truck bomb has caused a fire and the partial collapse of a bridge linking Russia-annexed Crimea with Russia. Three people have been killed. The bridge is a key supply artery for Moscow’s faltering war effort in southern Ukraine. The speaker of Crimea’s Kremlin-backed regional parliament immediately accused Ukraine. But the Kremlin didn’t apportion blame. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly threatened to strike the bridge and some celebrated Saturday’s explosion. But Kyiv stopped short of claiming responsibility.  The attack on the bridge comes a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin turned 70. It deals him a humiliating blow that could lead him to up the ante in his war on Ukraine. Ukrainian authorities take stock of ruins in liberated Lyman LYMAN, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian authorities are just beginning to sift through the wreckage of the devastated city of Lyman in eastern Ukraine. They are assessing the humanitarian toll and possibility of war crimes from a months-long Russian occupation. It’s still unclear how many died in the city since it was overrun by Russian forces in May. But authorities say Lyman has become a “humanitarian crisis” which could still hold further grim discoveries. The Donetsk governor on Friday said that two burial sites had been found in Lyman including around 200 individual civilian graves and a mass grave with an unknown number of bodies. Trains halted for hours in northern Germany, sabotage seen BERLIN (AP) — Train services were halted temporarily across a swath of northern Germany after a communication system failed, an outage that the national railway operator said was caused by sabotage. After a nearly three-hour suspension, Deutsche Bahn said the problem —  a “failure of the digital train radio system” — had been resolved but that some disruption could still be expected. Operator Deutsche Bahn said later Saturday that the disruption was caused by “sabotage of cables that are essential for railway traffic,” and that security authorities had opened an investigation. There was no immediate word on who might have been responsible. UN: Ukraine nuclear power plant loses external power link BERLIN (AP) — The U.N. nuclear watchdog says that Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, the biggest in Europe, has lost its last remaining external power source as a result of renewed shelling and is now relying on emergency diesel generators. The International Atomic Energy Agency said that the plant’s link to a 750-kilovolt line was cut at around 1 a.m. Saturday. It cited official information from Ukraine as well as reports from IAEA experts at the site, which is held by Russian forces. All six reactors at the plant are shut down but they still require electricity for cooling and other safety functions. The IAEA said plant engineers have begun work to repair the damaged power line. Death toll rises to 9 in blast at gas station in Ireland LONDON (AP) — Authorities say the death toll in an explosion at a gas station in a small village in northwest Ireland has risen to nine. Two more fatalities were confirmed on Saturday as emergency workers combed piles of rubble for more victims. Eight people are in hospitals and several people are unaccounted for after a blast tore through the Applegreen service station in Creeslough in County Donegal on Friday. Emergency responders from Ireland and neighboring Northern Ireland are involved in the search and rescue operation. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin said it was one of the “darkest of days for Donegal and the entire country.” Latest in string of strikes brings most UK trains to a halt LONDON (AP) — Most train services across Britain have been canceled as thousands of rail workers staged the latest in a string of strikes over jobs, pay and working conditions. Saturday’s 24-hour walkout by 40,000 cleaners, signalers, maintenance workers and station staff was the third in a week. The action is part of a surging wave of strikes from workers seeking pay raises to keep up with inflation that is running at almost 10%. Only about 20% of train services are expected to run with disruption spilling over into Sunday morning. Unions accuse the government of preventing train companies from making a deal to end the dispute. The government denies that and has urged unions to work with employers and “not against them.” What Friday’s jobs report means for Fed’s inflation fight WASHINGTON (AP) — For most Americans, Friday’s September jobs report was welcome news: Businesses kept hiring at a brisk pace, unemployment fell back to a half-century low and average pay rose. Yet for the Federal Reserve, the jobs figures highlight how little progress they’re making in their fight against inflation. With the Fed more likely to keep raising borrowing costs rapidly, the risk of recession will also rise. Employers did pull back slightly on hiring last month, and average wage gains slowed. But economists say neither is falling fast enough for the Fed to slow its inflation-fighting efforts. Another month of solid US hiring suggests more big Fed hikes WASHINGTON (AP) — America’s employers slowed their hiring in September but still added 263,000 jobs, a solid figure that will likely keep the Federal Reserve on pace to keep raising interest rates aggressively to fight persistently high inflation. Hiring fell from 315,000 in August to the weakest monthly gain since April 2021. The unemployment rate fell from 3.7% to 3.5%, matching a half-century low. The Fed is hoping that a slower pace of hiring would eventually mean less pressure on employers to raise pay and pass those costs on to their customers through price increases — a recipe for high inflation. But September’s job growth was likely too robust to satisfy the central bank’s inflation fighters. Stocks lose more ground on fears a recession may be looming NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street lost more ground on worries that a still-strong U.S jobs market may actually make a recession more likely. The S&P 500 fell 2.8% Friday after the government said employers hired more workers last month than expected. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq also fell sharply, and Treasury yields rose. Markets are worried the Federal Reserve could see the jobs report as proof the economy hasn’t slowed enough yet to get inflation under control. That could clear the way for continued, aggressive hikes to interest rates, something that risks causing a recession if done too severely. Copyright © 2022 . All rights reserved. Dr Vijay Dalal Gives Tips On Heart Care Zee News
Dr Vijay Dalal Gives Tips On Heart Care – Zee News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/dr-vijay-dalal-gives-tips-on-heart-care-zee-news/ Exercise: How, what and how much? The role of exercise in health is undisputed, but how, when and how much is very important; especially in heart disease. Exercise paired with a healthy diet and avoiding smoking is a simple measure of heart health. In some cases, exercise can be as powerful as medicine.1 Exercise helps heart health in the following ways:1 Reduces blood pressure Ensures healthy body weight Strengthens muscles Improves the circulation of blood in the body, reducing the load on the heart Stops or delays the development of diabetes Decreases risk of stroke, blood clots Lowers bad cholesterol and increases good cholesterol Reduces stress, making you feel good Decreases inflammation which affects several body systems However, pushing too hard is a bad idea. Research shows that exercising more than the recommended guidelines can lead to major health issues.3 Besides, the exercise regimen should be carefully chosen based on your health and physical conditions. Therefore, consult a doctor/physical trainer before you start an exercise routine. Exercise, how? First thing is to make a start and get more active. Choose an activity that you enjoy. Ensure you wear comfortable clothes and footwear. Schedule exercise in your daily timetable. Exercise with your friends and family. Maintain an exercise log and track progress. Do not exercise when you are sick or for a few days following sickness – give time for your body to recover.2 Exercise, what? Anything that makes you move and burn calories is exercise. It could be as simple as doing household work or climbing stairs. However, aerobic (or “cardio”) activity puts your heart and lungs at work and improves your fitness. The following table gives you a list of different types of aerobic exercises one can do (again, you need to talk to your doctor before starting any).4 Exercise, how much? About 150 minutes per week of moderate exercise or 75 minutes per week of vigorous exercise are recommended for healthy living. Moderate exercise for 30 min a day for 5 days a week is often sufficient to achieve optimal health benefits. Vigorous exercise can be limited to just 3 days a week as there are chances of injury.2 Exercise slowly for the first five minutes; it helps the heart rate increase gradually, the body to loosen and increases blood flow to muscles. Then perform your exercise routine, and at the end, cool down for 5 min to allow your heart rate to come back to resting levels and temperature to normal. Ensure you are well hydrated. During the initial days, start with low-intensity exercise and then gradually increase the intensity as your body starts accepting and adjusting to the exercise. College Football Schedule, Games 2022: What To Watch In Week 6, TV Channels, Saturday Kickoff Times – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/college-football-schedule-games-2022-what-to-watch-in-week-6-tv-channels-saturday-kickoff-times-cbs-sports/ Week 6 features an SEC on CBS doubleheader and the biggest game in years in Lawrence, Kansas Oct 8, 2022 at 9:30 am ET • 5 min read USATSI The college football slate in Week 6 of the season is headlined by two massive SEC matchups, a Big 12 rivalry dripping with storylines and a surprising chance for one of the sport’s biggest punchlines to become bowl eligible and stay undefeated on the year.  No. 2 Georgia will host Auburn in the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry in the first SEC on CBS Game of the Week with the Bulldogs hoping to get back on track after two sluggish performances. Immediately following that game is the highly anticipated matchup between coaches Jimbo Fisher and Nick Saban as Texas A&M will look to make it two straight over top-ranked Alabama. The Red River Showdown between Oklahoma and Texas will serve as a chance for the winner to stay in the Big 12 Championship Game race, and No. 17 TCU will travel to unbeaten and No. 19 Kansas with the Jayhawks looking to notch another win to get bowl eligible.  It’ll be a busy Saturday across the country, so here’s a handy viewer’s guide to help you navigate the action. All times Eastern. The best games No. 8 Tennessee at No. 25 LSU — noon on ESPN, fuboTV (Try for free): The Volunteers have had two weeks to prepare for a Tigers team that scored 21 straight points to topple Auburn 21-17 last weekend. Keep an eye on the passing attack when the Tigers have the ball. Quarterback Jayden Daniels hasn’t been a threat through the air, but the Vols defense got torched by Florida’s Anthony Richardson the last time we saw them on the field. No. 17 TCU at No. 19 Kansas — noon on FS1, fuboTV (Try for free): The biggest game in Lawrence in at least a generation will serve as one of the biggest games in the race for the Big 12 title. How many of you had that on your radar when the season started? (Put your hand down … no you didn’t.) If you haven’t had a chance to check out Jayhawks dual-threat quarterback Jalon Daniels, you need to pay attention to the dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate. Meanwhile, the Horned Frogs’ high flying aerial attack is led by quarterback Max Duggan, who has 11 touchdowns without an interception. Expect some fireworks at high noon.  Texas vs. Oklahoma (in Dallas) — noon on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free): This will be the first time since 1998 that both Big 12 rivals will be unranked heading into the Red River Showdown. Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers should make his first start since suffering a clavicle sprain in Week 2 vs. Alabama. He’ll be squaring off against a Sooners defense that got torched by TCU last week. Auburn at No. 2 Georgia — 3:30 p.m. on CBS, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App (Free): The Bulldogs needed a fourth-quarter comeback to escape the clutches of lowly Missouri last week. On the other side, the Tigers gave up 21 straight points in last week’s loss to LSU and are averaging 2.6 points per second half (excluding overtime) over their last eight games against Power Five opponents. A big win by the Bulldogs could send Tigers coach Bryan Harsin to the buyout life. No. 11 Utah at No. 18 UCLA — 3:30 p.m. on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free): The Bruins stunned Washington last weekend, and they will look to keep their undefeated season rolling at home. The Utes, on the other hand, can’t afford its second loss if they want to keep their faint College Football Playoff hopes alive. Texas A&M at No. 1 Alabama — 8 p.m. on CBS, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App (Free): The second game of the SEC on CBS doubleheader will feature the coaching matchup for which we’ve all been waiting. Jimbo Fisher and Nick Saban got into a war of words this offseason after Saban said A&M “bought” its recruiting class, which ranks as the best all time. To add further intrigue, the quarterback situation for both teams is uncertain. Alabama’s Bryce Young is a game-time decision and will be replaced by Jalen Milroe if he can’t go. Aggies quarterback Max Johnson suffered a hand injury in last weekend’s loss to Mississippi State and will reportedly miss significant time. He will be replaced by Haynes King — the Week 1 starter in each of the last two seasons.  Best of the rest No. 4 Michigan at Indiana — noon on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free) Arkansas at No. 23 Mississippi State — noon on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Eastern Michigan at Central Michigan — noon on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App South Florida at No. 24 Cincinnati — 2:30 p.m. on ESPN+, fuboTV (Try for free) Texas Tech at No. 7 Oklahoma State — 3:30 p.m. on FS1, fuboTV (Try for free) Tulsa at Navy — 3:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App No. 3 Ohio State at Michigan State — 4 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 9 Ole Miss at Vanderbilt — 4 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 21 Washington at Arizona State — 4 p.m. on Pac-12 Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Wyoming at New Mexico — 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App No. 5 Clemson at Boston College — 7:30 p.m. on ABC, fuboTV (Try for free) Washington State at No. 6 USC — 7:30 p.m. on Fox, fuboTV (Try for free) South Carolina at No. 13 Kentucky — 7:30 p.m. on SEC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 16 BYU vs. Notre Dame (in Las Vegas) — 7:30 p.m. on NBC, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 20 Kansas State at Iowa State — 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU, fuboTV (Try for free) Florida State at No. 14 NC State — 8 p.m. on ACC Network, fuboTV (Try for free) No. 12 Oregon at Arizona — 9 p.m. on Pac-12 Network, fuboTV (Try for free) Hawaii at San Diego State — 10:30 p.m. on CBS Sports Network, CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App

Wholesome Out And About Interview: Why Not Create A Healthy Metaverse? TrueAchievements
Wholesome – Out And About Interview: “Why Not Create A Healthy Metaverse?” – TrueAchievements https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/wholesome-out-and-about-interview-why-not-create-a-healthy-metaverse-trueachievements/ Wholesome – Out and About has a lovely message, as it hopes to inspire a real-world connection with nature through its gameplay. Check out our interview with Yaldi Games founder and managing director Elena Höge! Wholesome – Out and About will see us working to help a community rebuild its town and strive towards sustainability, while we explore, craft, cook, and more! What is Wholesome – Out and About? Wholesome – Out and About is an open-world life-sim with farming and exploration elements, and a big focus on encouraging a real-world appreciation of, and engagement with, nature. It’s in development and is published by Yaldi Games. “‘I called the company Yaldi Games because that’s a Scottish word… the word means something like ‘excitement’ and ‘joy’, it’s like ‘yay’ but the Scottish version of it,” Höge tells us. “I thought it was adorable, I loved how the word was written, so that’s why I called the company Yaldi Games, because excitement and joy were just the things that we’re trying to create within the games, but also inspiring real-life experiences. That’s kind of the model of the company, the mission is we want to make games that inspire real-life activities. Any games I want to make in the future should all have really fun gameplay (that’s like common gameplay, not ever educational)… and then this little piece of knowledge integrated into things and then use them in your real life.” This core aim, and the founding of Yaldi Games, was partly inspired by an experience Höge had in 2019, a few months before founding the company in 2020. “My parents had started foraging, and that’s not something that we had ever done before. Usually when we went outside, we went hiking or we went for a walk, and especially as a kid that was quite boring; you don’t have the same appreciation for nature as a child and as a young adult,” Höge says. “So when I went foraging with them at that point, when I was grown up, that was the point that I realised how much it connects you to nature. Foraging was kind of like a window that allowed me to see through to nature and the ecosystem and how everything ties together. I went foraging with my parents on this Bavarian hill, and we were scrambling up the slopes — they were very steep slopes — but I found quite a few interesting mushrooms for the first time… that was such an exciting activity,” she continues, likening the experience to a treasure hunt and a detective game, because of the need to carefully identify the mushroom you’re looking at to avoid any dangerous ones. “Exploring a forest is always so much more interesting than just walking down a given path. And then that way you actually move more; you spend a whole day outside, and it feels like fun. So I knew, in that moment coming down that mountain, that’s when I decided I was going to make a game that had real plants, real mushrooms, real recipes and crafting instructions, because we could potentially inspire people to actually then go out and recreate those activities,” Höge says. “That’s what I did on that day, and it made me really happy, and I felt like, that’s something the world needs, so I’ll try to make it. Let’s see how it goes!” Höge describes the experience of entering and winning competitions and grants for Yaldi Games and Wholesome – Out and About, and laments the difficulties indie games and studios face. “I got the UK games fund, which is the first games fund and the only games fund… there’s not enough funding for games, there’s not enough funding for indies. It’s bad. All the money goes into film.” In general, she says, it creates a “super bad ecosystem for indies to actually thrive.” Wholesome – Out and About was able to stand out thanks to its aim to promote both physical and mental wellbeing, as well encouraging a connection with nature and education. When does Wholesome – Out and About launch? We don’t yet have a release date for Wholesome – Out and About on Xbox, but we’ll keep an eye out! What’s it about? In Wholesome – Out and About, we arrive at Wholesome village to find it suffering in the aftermath of a storm which also wrecked our Granny’s cottage. We’ll be trying to help the townsfolk and repair the town, while also helping the community work towards sustainability. “The most important thing about the story, the messages that I wanted to communicate with the story, were all about community, sustainability, and climate action,” Höge says. “It was actually inspired by an article I read in a newspaper about a town coming together as a community to make their town net zero, because they saw that their government was just not doing enough, so they decided to just do it themselves… I thought that was really inspiring,” she continues, “so the whole setting of the game is inspired by that story… there will be a dramatic incident at the beginning of the game which is a cause of climate change and the lack of the response we have been doing as humans so far, so that will actually bring the town together, bring the people together, and allow them to think about how can they become more sustainable.” The townspeople will also be working on “how can they come together as a community to buy this community centre,” while we’ll aim to “help the people that have been struck down by the misfortune of this event, to rebuild. It’s still a little bit wobbly,” Höge says, “but the message is really all about the community, sustainability, climate action, and this town coming together.” Höge explains that “it’s all about communicating some actionable things… what’s really important to me is that every character has their own journey to sustainability, and that we as a player learn about it through them. So we can learn about fast fashion through a character that used to order lots of clothing like we do on Asos or something, and then them realising how this is bad, and then changing their behaviour…. It’s very light-touch information, but just by having it integrated into a character’s behaviour and their dialogue, I think it could have a huge impact on teaching people about it, just putting the information out there.” What’s the gameplay like? In Wholesome – Out and About, we will be “helping the town, bringing people together, and seeing them buy and restore this community centre that is the centrepiece of the town,” all while seeking to learn more about nature. We’ll also be upgrading our house, garden, and shop, and “essentially contributing as an active part of the community.” Along with completing quests, we’ll be exploring, cooking, crafting, gardening, foraging, and decorating. “When you’re in the middle of the game, for example, you’ll probably start a day by rolling out of bed, and then going outside and watering all your plants, because watering is best done in the morning,” Höge begins. “And then you’ll probably have lots of items that you created and cooked in your inventory so you’ll take them to your little shop. You can place them there and they’ll be sold over the course of the day… your granny takes care of them, and then you can go off and explore.” While exploring the world, we can walk, ride our bike, and unlock train stations to get around faster. “Essentially it’s all about that exploration and foraging, because you can really take your time, you can explore those beautiful environments, and then what you’ve found, you can take that back, you can cook something with it or craft something with it, and then put that in your store and sell that the next day, and fulfill some orders in your garden.” Höge refers to playing Animal Crossing, saying, “I just noticed that, for me, I would really love to have a bit more engagement and direction than Animal Crossing is offering.” To that end, Wholesome – Out and About will feature daily quests. “Those daily quests are really interesting, I’m a big fan of them myself, because they’ll be all about the characters and curing some problems that they’re having,” she explains. “So for example, I have a long list of medical conditions and herbal remedies for them, so through the daily quests, you’ll learn about nutrition, what kind of herbal cures you can use to heal certain kinds of problems. If you have a headache, for example, the character could tell you to get meadowsweet and make a tincture from it, or a tea, or if they have a fever, that also works… the daily quests are really the things that I’m looking forward to the most. There’ll be a lot of them, and so you’ll find different ones every day, that give you something to do, something to forage for, something to look for, and then that improves your friendship with the characters and allows you to level up and unlock more dialogue and that kind of thing.’ Höge says these daily quests will likely be the “main way” of helping the townsfolk and making friends. “We’ll have a really beautiful storyline in the first actual seasons, the first days of the game, essentially, but then we’ll let the player loose, and they can choose to do what they want to do. In that case, the daily quests will be something they can come back to and do every day, to engage with the characters, to help them out, and of course you can also gift them things.” One of Wholesome – Out and About’s core aims is to encourage players to take what they learn in the game and apply it to the real world; for instance, trying out the crafting recipes in the game, in real life. There will be a lot of these recipes: “in my spreadsheet currently, I have like 180 recipes, and I love all of them,” Höge says. “I did create a lot of them myself as well, so for example something that’s in there that I created is spruce tip jelly. Spruce tips come out in spring… You can harvest them, you can eat them like this as well, they’re ...

The Best Cartoons To Watch On Netflix, Hulu, HBO And More – Polygon https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/the-best-cartoons-to-watch-on-netflix-hulu-hbo-and-more-polygon/ The heyday of Saturday-morning cartoons is long behind us. In the era of streaming television, where services like Netflix and Hulu have the means to surprise-drop whole seasons of animated shows and feature-length films on subscribers without warning and and where (nearly) all your favorite shows are accessible with the push of a button, popular animated television is no longer “appointment” television and instead is a matter of finding time to fit it in with the rest of one’s busy media schedule. Here at Polygon, we love animation — especially the era of animation when one had to be in front of a television set at a particular time of the day on a particular day of the week in order to catch our favorite shows. We’ve put together a list of our favorite childhood cartoons and where you can watch them. For the sake of this list, a “Saturday-morning cartoon” is less a matter of whether it aired on the weekend or not, but rather a matter of a show that made any day it aired on feel like a Saturday for the duration of its run time. Here are Polygon’s favorite Saturday-morning cartoons! American Dragon: Jake Long Image: Walt Disney Television Animation American Dragon: Jake Long made immediate waves in my San Gabriel Valley-based extracurricular group. Sure, he had dyed spiky hair (to indicate he was a cool Asian to white kids), and yeah, it was a mystical martial arts-styled show. But we loved him because Disney finally figured out that we loved Brenda Song, and decided it was time to branch out a little more. Like any good superhero show, Jake’s own arc is focused on his ability to hone his powers — practicing his ability to shape-shift into a dragon. —Nicole Clark American Dragon: Jake Long is available to stream on Disney Plus. Arthur Image: Cinar/PBS Kids If you were a PBS kid growing up in the ’90s or early 2000s, then you — like me — might have absolutely loved Arthur. The aardvark family was so lovely, even if they didn’t always get along in the moment. I loved his friends like Buster, Muffy, and Francine, and am still obsessed with the Library Card Song. The show also had tons of cameos, including late Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek. A genuinely incredible and entertaining show for kids. (Why am I crying?) Truly, what a wonderful kind of day. —NC Arthur is available to stream on PBS Kids. Avatar: The Last Airbender Image: Nickelodeon Animation Studio I’ve watched this show across so many platforms. I streamed it after its recent move to Netflix, and in college I watched Legend of Korra episodes as they launched on Nickelodeon’s own streaming site (the final season never aired on TV, even though the show has since hit cult status). But as a kid I watched the hell out of Avatar episodes after school and on weekends, fully engrossed in the world’s elemental magic system and its geopolitical strife. Its storytelling was sophisticated for a kids’ cartoon, and I watched it as I went from preteen to teen, crossing the chasm of 13. My mom, who often had to deal with my cartoon bingeing, genuinely enjoyed watching it too. It remains an animated show that I love to watch as an adult (up there with Steven Universe). —NC Avatar: The Last Airbender is available to stream on Netflix. Batman: The Animated Series Image: Warner Bros. Animation I could write a blurb on Batman: The Animated Series. I could try to sum up, in a short two-to-four-sentence paragraph, how the series shaped my aesthetic and narrative sensibilities from an early age and spurred me to pursue a lifelong journey through art that would ultimately result in me writing about it as a career. But instead, I think I’ll just quote a paragraph from an essay I wrote last month for the show’s 30th anniversary: My love for Batman: The Animated Series transcends the character or the medium. The show didn’t just introduce me to the character of Batman, and it didn’t simply cement my love of animation; it opened my world to whole dimensions of art and expression and history I might never have pursued or known had I not encountered that series from an early age. In no uncertain terms, Timm and Radomski’s show is, however many degrees removed, responsible for setting me on the course to pursue a career writing about art and sharing that knowledge and passion with others. I’m a curation editor here at Polygon, which means my job is sifting through the ever-growing and shifting catalog of movies, television, comics, and games and spotlighting work I find particularly noteworthy, thought-provoking, and beautiful. I never would have honed those sensibilities, let alone thought to write about them, had it not been for Batman: The Animated Series. Batman: The Animated Series is available to stream on HBO Max. Beast Wars: Transformers Image: Alliance Communications I was not yet born when the original Transformers cartoon series first aired on American television but, to paraphrase an old meme, “Born too late to watch Transformers, born too early to explore space, born just in time to absolutely lose my mind over Beast Wars.” Old-school Transformers fans will shake their heads and harrumph at the idea of the 1996 CG series being one’s introduction to the franchise, but to my 6-year-old self, I loved it all the same and couldn’t tell the difference. The cartoon told the story of Optimus Primal and his crew of Maximal comrades who crash land on a mysterious planet — revealed to be prehistoric Earth — along with their mortal adversaries, the Predacons, led by Megatron. Beast Wars was one of my formative introductions to serialized storytelling and a series which, years later, even considering the dated visuals, still manages to hold up as a drama that’s as riveting as it is occasionally hilarious. —TE Beast Wars is available to stream on Tubi and Pluto TV. Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot Image: Dark Horse Entertainment, Columbia TriStar Television Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot to me represents the platonic ideal of what a Saturday-morning cartoon is and ought to be. Based on Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s 1995 comic book of the same name, the series follows the eponymous Rusty, a boy robot who resembles a cross between Astro Boy and Pinocchio, who is set to replace the BGY-11, a massive war robot built as a last-ditch defense against world-ending threats both terrestrial and extraterrestrial. Unbeknownst to most of the world, however, including Rusty, the Big Guy is not in fact a robot— it’s a heavily armed battle suit piloted by Lieutenant Dwayne Hunter, who works undercover as the Big Guy’s ostensible “repairman.” A mashup of broad-shoulder superheroics and sci-fi kaiju action shot through with themes of aspirational futurism and coming-of-age drama, Big Guy and Rusty is the third most inspiring giant robot cartoon this side of Yasuhiro Imagawa’s Giant Robo and Brad Bird’s The Iron Giant. Over the span of two seasons, Big Guy and Rusty ventured across the expanse of Earth to the far reaches of the moon to 200 years in the past and back again, thwarting evildoers and growing together as a surrogate family along the way. Unfortunately, like so many other cartoons of its era, Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot was canceled on a shocking cliffhanger that still fascinates and perplexes me to this day. That said, with a show like Big Guy and Rusty, it’s the journey that matters more than the destination. Plus, it’s got an absolute banger of a opening theme song. —TE Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot is available to stream on YouTube. Danger Mouse Image: Cosgrove Hall Films, Thames Television Parodying James Bond — or, if you want to be specific, short-lived 1960s Bond knockoff TV series Danger Man — 1980s British cartoon Danger Mouse is about a mouse secret agent, who wears an eyepatch and a white roll-neck sweater, foiling the dastardly plots of evil toad Baron Greenback while keeping his hapless hamster companion Penfold out of trouble. Kids love nothing more than humor that makes them feel sophisticated and grown-up, and Danger Mouse’s mix of slapstick, farce, gentle satire, and radical, fourth-wall-breaking wit hit this sweet spot with unerring aim. It even had the courage to mock its perfect hero, and the very idea of heroism — Danger Mouse’s essential cowardice is often what saves his skin. —Oli Welsh Danger Mouse is available to stream on Netflix. Danny Phantom Image: Billionfold Inc., Nickelodeon Animation Studio I still rewatch the show’s finale on my tiny fifth-generation iPod Nano, which I’d spent iTunes money on to entertain myself during long bus rides to volleyball tournaments. Nothing is more appealing than a teen drama with an occult streak and a cast that I crushed on. In case you’re not familiar with the plot: Young Danny Fenton (he was just 14) when his parents built a very strange machine, it was designed to view a world unseen. (He’s gonna catch ’em all cause he’s Danny Phantom.) When it didn’t quite work, his folks — they just quit. But then Danny took a look inside of it. There was a great big flash, everything just changed (his molecules got all rearranged). When he first woke up, he realized he had snow-white hair and glowing green eyes. He could walk through walls, disappear, and fly; he was much more unique than the other guys. It was then that he knew what he had to do — he had to stop all the ghosts who were coming through. He’s here to fight for me and you. —NC Danny Phantom is available to stream on Paramount Plus. The Fairly OddParents Image: Frederator Studios, Nickelodeon Animation Studio Watching Nickelodeon in the early 2000s meant wishing you had fairy godparents like Cosmo and Wanda. That jazzy intro jingle! The power to get anything your heart desires (with really bizarre unintended consequences)! Having to figure out which matc...

XRP trades above support as the price aims to continue its trend movement as the price keeps holding above 8 and 20-day EMA. The price of XRP eyes a rally to $1 as key resistance was flipped into support with more buy orders.  The price of Ripple (XRP) has continued to show its strength as price trends with a key breakout from a downtrend range against tether (USDT). With the crypto market cap bouncing from its weekly low as the market continued to look promising, the price of Ripple (XRP) was not left out as the price broke out of its long-range with price trending to a higher height with eyes set for a possible $1 target. (Data from Binance) Ripple (XRP) Price Analysis On The Weekly Chart The crypto market received relief, as most crypto altcoins expected. However, despite the recent price surge in most crypto assets, some altcoins have remained range-bound. One project that has kept its price moving up on steady over the past few days has been XRP. After the announcement of the court order ruling in favor of Ripple (XRP) winning, the case has been received very well by XRP, a price trend week in and week out as price eyes $1. The price of XRP saw its price rejected to a weekly low of $0.3 with the court order coming at the right time; the price rose from that low to a height of $0.53, creating a more bullish scenario. If XRP maintains its bullish structure with a strong volume, we could see a price rally to $1. Weekly resistance for the price of XRP – $0.6-$0.8. Weekly support for the price of XRP – $0.3. Price Analysis Of XRP On The Daily (1D) Chart Daily XRP Price Chart | Source: XRPUSDT On Tradingview.com On the daily timeframe, the price of XRP continues to show strength as it pulls some gains despite the market appearing to have stalled in price movement; after hitting a daily low of $0.44, the price of XRP rallied to a high of $0.5 before being rejected into an ascending triangle as it struggled to break out with price breaking out and looking more bullish for a rally. The price of XRP breaking out signals more bullish trends to a high of $0.6 and a possible rally to $1. The price of XRP holding 8 and 20-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA) is a good sign for price growth.  The prices at $0.50 and $0.4 correspond to the 8 and 20-day EMA values.  The Relative Strength Index (RSI) for XRP shows increasing buy orders as the value is above the 50 mark area daily. Daily resistance for the XRP price – $0.6-$0.8. Daily support for the XRP price – $0.45. Featured Image From Finbold, Charts From Tradingview

Marshall Plan Forging U.S.-Europe Alliance Tested By Ukraine War The Washington Post
Marshall Plan Forging U.S.-Europe Alliance Tested By Ukraine War The Washington Post
Marshall Plan, Forging U.S.-Europe Alliance, Tested By Ukraine War – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/marshall-plan-forging-u-s-europe-alliance-tested-by-ukraine-war-the-washington-post/ George C. Marshall was doubtless moved to be equated with George Washington. As Harvard University granted the secretary of state an honorary law doctorate on June 5, 1947, its citation called him “a soldier and statesman whose character and ability brook only one comparison in the history of this country.” But Marshall — the former Army chief of staff during World War II and then arguably the country’s most admired public servant — had something else in mind as he received applause from a crowd of 15,000 in Harvard Yard: pitching a multibillion-dollar aid plan for the broken European continent. Seventy-five years later, as Russia’s war against Ukraine retests the historic bond between Western Europe and the United States, the legacy of the Marshall Plan has gained renewed relevance — as has the need to understand the frequently miscast initiative. “The Marshall Plan has become a favorite analogy for policymakers,” said Harvard political scientist Graham T. Allison, “yet few know much about it.” One reason for the confusion was the anodyne nature of Marshall’s speech itself. “It is logical that the United States do whatever it is able to do to assist in the return of normal economic health in the world,” Marshall told his receptive, if somewhat puzzled, audience that day, “without which there can be no political stability and no assured peace.” That was about as rousing — or as specific — as his short address got. There was no mention of the Soviet Union, against whose influence the plan was directed. “Any government which maneuvers to block the recovery of other countries cannot expect help from us,” he said. That was it. Marshall’s speech was vaguely worded for two reasons, said Benn Steil, director of international economics at the Council on Foreign Relations and author of “The Marshall Plan: Dawn of the Cold War.” “First, Marshall wanted to put the burden on the European countries themselves to come up with an integrated recovery plan. Also, Marshall wanted to avoid the impression that he was trying to divide Europe.” The Soviet Union was nominally welcome to join too. “Moscow was carefully not excluded,” said Steil, but behind the scenes it “was prodded to exclude itself.” European leaders certainly got the message. Within hours of Marshall’s speech, the British and French foreign ministers were conferring about how much aid they needed to regain their “economic health” and in what form. This collaboration — and the economic ties that bound the 16 nations that ultimately received U.S. loans, grants or commodities over the four-year plan — laid the groundwork for European integration. Marshall has recently come under criticism from revisionist historians for claiming principal authorship of the plan. But Marshall never denied that the European Recovery Plan — the policy’s official name, which he always used — was the work of many hands. The plan’s true godfather, according to Steil, was Marshall’s boss, President Harry S. Truman. Truman laid the ideological groundwork for it in a March 1947 speech in which he asked Congress to provide financial support for the Greek government against a Communist insurgency. Articulating what would become known as the Truman Doctrine, the president argued that the United States was “compelled to assist free people in their struggles against totalitarianism” lest its “spread undermine the foundations of international peace and hence the security of the United States.” Truman’s belief that the Soviets would meddle in Greece turned out to be wrong. But when Marshall led a delegation to Moscow the following month, he came away convinced that the Kremlin had little interest in aiding Europe, which was in social and economic turmoil and had just struggled through the “hunger winter” of 1946-47. “The patient is sick,” Marshall said in a nationally broadcast radio address upon his return from Russia, “while the doctors debate the cure.” Something had to be done to help Europe and fend off Moscow’s efforts at expanding Communism. Piecemeal aid of the sort that Congress had just granted Greece would no longer do. Marshall enlisted the big thinkers on the State Department planning staff, led by George Kennan, known as the author of the “containment” policy for deterring the USSR. The result was the Marshall Plan — a moniker Truman fostered “because I wanted General Marshall to get full credit for his brilliant contribution to the measure he helped formulate,” the president said in his memoir. Marshall led a furious campaign to pass the plan, crisscrossing the country giving pep talks and interviews. “I worked on that as if I was running for the Senate or the presidency,” he later said. On Nov. 11, 1947, Marshall made an impassioned case for the plan before a joint session of the House and Senate foreign affairs committees. Now his words were anything but anodyne. “We must not permit the free community of Europe to be extinguished,” he said. “Should this occur, it would be a tragedy for the world.” Nor was there any need to mince words about Moscow. After briefly flirting with the idea of cooperating, Joseph Stalin had made clear his opposition to the plan, forcing Europe’s Communist bloc to reject it. “It is now clear that only one power, the Soviet Union, does not for its own reasons share” the goal of restoring Europe, Marshall said. The Cold War, a phrase that had just come into use that fall, was on. And so was America’s first line of defense: the Marshall Plan. Seven months later, Congress enacted the Economic Cooperation Act, providing $17 billion ($160 billion today) in loans and grants to the 16 participating countries. Did it work? Economically, it’s not clear: The plan’s own accounting showed that the aid to the recipient countries accounted for just about 3 percent of their combined national income between 1948 and 1951. “The importance of the Plan to Europe’s recovery remains a one of contention amongst historians,” said Fredrik Logevall, a Harvard historian and author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Embers of War: The Fall of an Empire and the Making of America’s Vietnam.” But there is little doubt of its success in fortifying European unity and democracy. “It strengthened Western Europeans’ belief in democracy and capitalism and tied the region more firmly in a U.S.-led economic union and later a military alliance,” Logevall said. “Moreover, it helped to undermine Soviet influence in Europe.” Logevall added, “It served America’s strategic purposes, but it was also charitable to a degree seldom seen in international politics.” “It is impossible to imagine the E.U. or NATO without the Marshall Plan,” Steil said. However, the plan’s political and moral legacy was undermined by the Donald Trump administration’s derisive treatment of the U.S.-European alliance, Steil said. And now it’s being tested again by Vladimir Putin’s Russia following the invasion of Ukraine. Amid that fight, Marshall’s successor, current Secretary of State Antony Blinken, is invoking the Marshall Plan in an effort to maintain the transatlantic unity that has bound the United States and its European allies for three-quarters of a century. In June, on the anniversary of Marshall’s Harvard speech, Blinken tweeted that in 1947, “European nations rallied to the call to come together, united in purpose, contributing to the revival of Europe. Answering the call together, we can once again prevail, just as the U.S. and Europe did together 75 years ago.”

(AP) — Older people with limited mobility and those with chronic health conditions requiring the use of electrically powered medical devices were especially vulnerable when Hurricane Ian slammed into Southwest Florida, and experts warn such risks to society’s oldest are growing as disasters increase with the impact of climate change. Almost all of the dozens of people killed by Ian in hardest hit Lee County were 50 or older, with many in their 70s, 80s and even 90s. That’s highlighted the rising dangers for those least likely to be able to flee such disasters and those most likely to be impacted by the aftermath. Climate change makes hurricanes wetter and more powerful, but it also increases the frequency of heat waves like ones that scorched the Pacific Northwest the last two summers, killing scores of mostly aged people. It’s also intensified drought fueled wildfires like the inferno that incinerated the California town of Paradise in 2018, killing 85 people, again mostly older. “It’s not terribly surprising that physically frail, socially isolated people are the most likely to die in these events. But it is politically significant,” said New York University sociology professor Eric Klinenberg. “If we know people are at risk, why aren’t we doing more to help them?” Klinenberg, who wrote the book “Heat Wave: A Social Autopsy of Disaster in Chicago” about extreme heat that killed more than 700 mostly older and Black people in July 1991, called Ian a mere preview. “We saw this happen in Chicago, in (Hurricane) Katrina, in (Superstorm) Sandy, and we are going to see more and more as the globe becomes increasingly hotter,” he said. Florida in particular will feel the increased impact of climate-fueled disasters, sitting in the path of many Atlantic storms and with a large share of retirees drawn by warm weather, a vast coastline and relatively cheap housing. About 29% of Lee County’s population is 65 and older. One of the more dramatic stories of Ian demonstrates the risks. Johnny Lauder’s 86-year-old mother Karen Lauder, who uses a wheelchair, initially refused to evacuate. But as the water inside her home began to rise nearly above her head, she was unable to flee and her son had to come rescue her . The extreme dangers some face when they lose power was especially clear in Lee County, where an 89-year-old man died after the electricity he needed for his oxygen went out and then his backup generator failed. Florida has attempted to address some of these issues by setting up shelters where people with health conditions that require electricity for oxygen, dialysis and devices like ventilators can preregister to stay. AARP Florida Director Jeff Johnson praised the special shelters, saying the state’s county emergency management agencies had modernized and improved evacuation operations the past two decades. “There is room for improvement, but it would be wrong to say they aren’t doing anything,” he said. Home-based networks that deliver care and services to older people, as well as neighborhood associations and faith communities can also help by checking on socially isolated older people, Johnson said. Several hurricane survivors sat in wheelchairs Thursday outside one special shelter set up at an elementary school in Fort Myers. Merrill Bauchert, 60, was staying there because Ian destroyed his home and he needs electricity for the CPAP machine he uses for severe sleep apnea. Bauchert said dozens of residents from a senior living facility were staying there, many of them with mobility problems or dependent on electrical medical devices to stay alive. Large oxygen tanks were used at first for people with breathing problems, he said, but those were later replaced with mechanical oxygen generators for individual use. Conditions have improved with restored water service, but the early days were tough, Bauchert said. With many people too frail to go outside and no sewer service inside, using the restroom involved putting a plastic bag in a toilet and sitting down, sometimes with help. “You were actually doing your business in a trash bag. Take the trash bag, tie it in a knot, throw it in the trash can and put another bag in for the next person,” he said. Gov. Ron DeSantis has recognized the disproportionate effect Ian had on the state’s older residents, and the need for local groups to help their recovery. “It hit in areas that have a lot of elderly residents, and I’ve met a lot of the folks,” DeSantis said at a news conference Thursday. “So you’re somebody who’s maybe 85 years old. You may not be able to do the same home repair that you used to be able to do when you were younger.” While the death toll of over 100 and property damage from Ian was catastrophic, Hurricane Katrina caused far more deaths and destruction in August 2005. Researchers have that nearly half of those killed by Katrina in Louisiana were 75 or older. A noted a failure by all levels of government to effectively evacuate thousands of older, sick and disabled people from New Orleans as neighbors with cars fled the city. Older people are also at risk from heat in the days and weeks after major storms. After Hurricane Ida slammed Louisiana in 2021, of nine New Orleans residents killed by heat and 10 for whom heat was a contributing cause of death, only four — two in each group — were under the age of 60, according to information provided by the Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office. The aftereffects of Hurricane Irma in 2017 took an especially large toll. The direct impacts of the storm killed more than 90 people in the U.S., but researchers at the University of South Florida and Brown University died within 90 days of the storm, compared to the same period in 2015, when there were no hurricanes. The study was prompted by the heat-related deaths of 12 residents at a Broward County nursing home that occurred when the storm knocked out air conditioning and staff didn’t move them to another facility. An administrator and three nurses were later charged. Klinenberg, the sociologist who wrote about the Chicago heat deaths, said the fault lies in in how society cares for its elders not only during disasters, but daily. “We live in an aging society and in a way we are victims of our own success,” he said. “Europe has the same problem. Also Japan and Korea. People are living decades longer because of medical science, but we don’t know how to care for them.” ___ Snow reported from Phoenix. Flathead Lake Lodge Montana Dude Ranch Review With Photos Insider
Flathead Lake Lodge Montana Dude Ranch Review With Photos Insider
Flathead Lake Lodge Montana Dude Ranch Review With Photos – Insider https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/flathead-lake-lodge-montana-dude-ranch-review-with-photos-insider/ My kids at Flathead Lake Lodge. Allison Tibaldi I’ve always lived in major cities like New York and Rome, and vacation in Tuscany or the Hamptons. This summer I tried something very different. I brought my two adult kids to a Montana dude ranch. I loved it even though I didn’t ride a horse. Everyone should try it — if it’s not cost prohibitive. I’m one of the least likely people to vacation at a dude ranch. I prefer beach trips where I can read a good book while relaxing on the sand. Plus, I don’t even ride horses. But a post-pandemic appreciation for the outdoors had me craving something totally different. Hiking with my daughter. Allison Tibaldi I’m a New York City-based travel writer who’s been to every continent, including many remote corners of the world. But as someone who’s lived in New York City or Rome for most of my life, cities and cosmopolitan places are typically my favorite places to visit. Before the pandemic, jogging around the Central Park reservoir was enough fresh air for me. However, after being locked-down in my New York City apartment for so long, my perspective changed. I discovered a newfound appreciation for nature and the outdoors and when it was time to return to travel, I started dreaming of wide-open spaces, craving room to roam. Usually, my family and I vacation in Europe each summer. But when I was ready to book our holiday, a negative COVID-19 test was still required to re-enter the US and I didn’t want to risk not being allowed back in. Staying in the states was a priority. As I researched options and spoke to friends, several acquaintances highly recommended Flathead Lake Lodge in Montana, a 2,000-acre dude ranch in the shadows of Glacier National Park. I had never been to Montana, liked the idea of going somewhere new, and it seemed a fitting choice for a week-long nature-filled family vacation. It turned out to be a pandemic silver lining as my kids and I had a blast — even though it was a dude ranch and we had no desire to ride any horses. A dude ranch is an all-inclusive western-style vacation with meals, accommodations, and activities included. Horseback riding is often a focal point with group trail rides, lessons, and rodeo skill classes offered. The ranch is immersed in nature. Allison Tibaldi I was sold on my friends’ recommendations for Flathead Lake Lodge because despite the fact that it was a dude ranch centered around equestrian activities, it had so much else on offer, too. From hiking to water sports, yoga and art classes, days are filled with as much, or as little as you want to do.  With so many activities, many guests never leave the premises. The farthest we ventured was cycling a few minutes into the tiny village of Bigfork for ice cream cones. I also found the staff to be uniformly friendly. I met several employees who initially came to the ranch on vacation and enjoyed the experience so much, they applied for a job. Flathead Lake Lodge is expensive — around $5,000 per person for a week. The lake at Flathead Lake Lodge. Allison Tibaldi Flathead Lake Lodge hosts guests from June to September and guests must book an entire week, starting on a Sunday and ending on the following Sunday. I reserved nearly a year in advance and suggest booking early, as return visitors tend to book the same week year after year. A vacation at Flathead Lake Lodge is costly. I paid $5,439 per person, per week. Everything is included, from activities to meals to adult beverages. There are a few sports that incur a charge, like sporting clays but my kids and I participated in many activities without ever paying an extra cent. The only additional cost was tipping the hardworking staff.  Unlike many resorts, there’s no low or shoulder season where you’ll find a discount rate. While Flathead Lake Lodge is clearly very expensive, I’ve paid more for a holiday at top resorts in Europe, where I paid for everything à la carte. The price of a family vacation abroad quickly balloons when each soda costs 10 euros or more. At Flathead Lake Lodge, there were no costly surprises when it came to paying the bill. A dude ranch isn’t the type of place to pop in for an overnight stay or quick weekend getaway. The main lodge. Allison Tibaldi Because they only accept reservations for a seven-night stay, and with a complete turnover happening every Sunday and all guests departing and arriving on the same day, I expected check-in to be as hectic as a Times Square subway turnstile. But I was pleasantly surprised to find everything was very well organized. My children and I were dropped off at the main lodge building where check-in took place just outside the front door. It had been a long flight from New York with a connection in Denver for me, and we were all hungry. The kitchen staff had prepared an outdoor buffet with do-it-yourself sandwich fixings and a few fresh salads to feed us right away. We stayed in a two-bedroom cabin for the week that I thought was rustic and comfortable. Our cabin at Flathead Lake Lodge in Montana. Allison Tibaldi Our spacious two-bedroom cabin was a short stroll from the main lodge where our bags were dropped off. I found our accommodations to be rustic but upscale, with wood floors, cozy area rugs, beds with firm mattresses adorned with country quilts, knotty-pine log furniture, and window boxes overflowing with colorful flowers. I thought the chairs on the front porch made for a scenic perch for soaking in views of Flathead Lake. The master bedroom had a king-size bed, en suite bathroom, and an outdoor patio. There was a second bedroom with a bathroom and two twin beds for my kids. A large living room and a third bathroom meant lots of space for the three of us. Flathead Lake Lodge is a place to disconnect, so there was no television but Wi-Fi worked like a charm. Guest accommodations are cleaned daily. An unexpected surprise was laundry service, which was offered several days during the week at no extra charge. We left our dirty clothes in a designated bag and housekeeping delivered them back neatly folded. After we unpacked, it was time to go to a guest orientation in the main lodge. There were around 100 of us, from babies to senior citizens, with many multi-generational family groups. Chase, the owner (R), with his son and other ranch guests. Allison Tibaldi Chase Averill, the owner, grew up at the ranch and now runs it, the third generation of his family to do so. He lives on property with his wife and three young children, and sporting Wrangler jeans, a plaid shirt, and a cowboy hat, he greeted everyone personally before giving us a brief overview of ranch life and the many available activities. Chase treated us like welcome houseguests rather than customers, even sharing his cell phone number in case anyone had a problem late at night when the main office is closed. I noticed that he already knew many guests, which I later learned was because they return year after year. His dad, Doug Averill, who used to run the ranch, also lives here and often helps out. My kids and I don’t horseback ride, but for most guests, riding is a big part of their dude ranch vacation. Horse riding and activities are the focal point at Flathead Lake Lodge in Montana, including the weekly rodeo. Allison Tibaldi Chase walked us all over to the barn for a tour. Horseback riding is at the heart of the dude ranch experience and the wranglers provide lessons and trail rides for all ages, from beginners to expert equestrians. Guided trail rides and lessons are offered from early in the morning until dusk, and guests may ride as much as they like. Many guests spend a good part of each day in ...

How To Detox Your Liver Quickly Say Physicians Eat This Not That Eat This Not That
How To “Detox” Your Liver Quickly, Say Physicians — Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/how-to-detox-your-liver-quickly-say-physicians-eat-this-not-that-eat-this-not-that/ It’s common to hear people say they want to do a liver detox after a night of partying too much or eating a bad diet for a while, and there’s a slew of products promising you’ll have a healthy liver again in no time. But how safe and effective are liver detoxes? And should you do one? Eat This, Not That! Health spoke with Dr. Ravi Chandiramani, NMD – Naturopathic Doctor; Soul Surgery who shares what to know about liver detoxes and if they’re beneficial. As always, please consult your physician for medical advice. Read on—and to ensure your health and the health of others, don’t miss these Sure Signs You’ve Already Had COVID. Shutterstock Dr. Chandiramani explains, “The liver is the largest internal organ in the body, weighing in at about 3 pounds in an adult on average. The human liver performs over 500 vital functions.  Bile is produced by the liver to aid in the digestion and absorption of consumed fats. Bile also allows for the absorption of vitamin K from dietary fats. The liver is also our primary blood filter, allowing for the removal of toxins, byproducts and other harmful substances from our blood.  The liver creates blood clotting factors using the same vitamin K absorbed with the help of bile.  The liver removes excess glucose from the bloodstream and stores it as glycogen. The glycogen can then be broken down again when glucose is needed by the body.  The liver stores significant amounts of fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K) and B12 along with iron and copper.  The liver produces albumin, a protein that keeps fluids in your bloodstream from leaking into surrounding tissue(s). The liver metabolizes proteins, carbohydrates and fats so your body can use them.” Dr. Chandiramani says, “Diets high in saturated fats and refined carbohydrates such as processed foods and “fast” foods are not healthy for your liver and your body in general. You may be a candidate for a detox if this is how you eat the majority of the time or if you have been overindulging in such foods over a shorter period of time.  Lifestyle: The liver has to process all the toxins you put into your body so if your lifestyle includes smoking tobacco or anything else, consuming alcohol over established safe guidelines of one drink (12 ounces of beer or 5 ounces of wine or 1 shot of liquor) a day for women and two drinks a day for men, using recreational or illicit drugs, etc., you may be a candidate for a liver detox. Environment: Again, the liver has to process all the toxins that enter your body even if they enter your body unintentionally. Think carbon monoxide exhaust from vehicles, pesticide exposure, paint fumes, off-gassing of solvents from new cars, carpet and furniture. Therefore both the choice of living environment and the choice of job may carry a greater risk of exposure to environmental toxins. For example, big city dwellers may have greater environmental exposure to carbon monoxide but non-organic farmers may have greater exposure to pesticides. Both may be good candidates for liver detoxes.  Genetics, viral hepatitis B and C infection and the overall state of one’s health also factor into the functioning of your liver.” Dr. Chandiramani tells us, “The relative safety of a liver detox depends largely on the nature of the detox itself and the individual’s tolerance of the detox.  The safest detoxes are the ones that improve upon one or more of the “controllable” variables of diet, lifestyle and environment. Poor diets can be improved by reducing the intake of saturated fats and refined carbohydrates in favor of unsaturated fats and complex carbohydrates respectively. Adding in fresh fruits, vegetables, green leafy plants and nuts will take this dietary modification to the next level. Garlic and turmeric are excellent seasoning agents and therapeutic spices that can easily be incorporated into yummy recipes that make your food your medicine. Water is the key to it all. Staying hydrated with plenty of water is paramount in any detox effort and in general. Flavor with lime or lemon if necessary. Limiting alcohol intake, cutting back on smoking, abstaining from the use of recreational or illicit drugs, preventing hepatitis infection by not engaging in risky behaviors such as unprotected sex and intravenous drug use are all essential components to any detox effort. Engaging in any kind of movement, whether formal exercise or not, is yet another key component to lifestyle modification.  While you may not be in a position to drastically change your job or living environment, you can take steps to reduce exposure to harmful environmental toxins by wearing a mask with one or more filters, gloves, long sleeves, protective eyewear and other personal protective equipment as appropriate. Instead of only engaging in these modifications temporarily or intermittently, the goal should be to incorporate these changes to diet, lifestyle and environment permanently. If that means that they have to be incorporated gradually in order to make them part of the routine, that’s ok too.” According to Dr. Chandiramani, “Symptoms of an unhealthy or diseased liver may include: –Jaundice or a yellow hue to the whites of the eyes and skin due to high levels of bilirubin, a waste product of red blood cell breakdown. –Easy bruising due a problem with the production of blood clotting factors –Edema or swelling or fluid retention in the legs and/or ankles due to a problem in the production of albumin. –Pain in the abdomen, most commonly on the right side of the body towards the bottom of the rib cage where the liver is located in most people. –Itchy skin due the excess buildup of bile salts under the skin. –Darker colored urine than normal and/or pale colored stool than normal. –Confusion or loss of orientation due to high ammonia levels in the blood that then travels to the brain and other organs. –More subtle signs of an unhealthy liver may include feeling tired all the time, memory and focus issues, variable sleep patterns, feeling bloated, lack of appetite, more aches and pains than usual and dry mouth and eyes.”  Dr. Chandiramani suggests, “Instead of spending a lot of money on the latest and greatest juices, teas, supplements, not all of which are healthy or safe, focus instead on incremental change in diet, lifestyle and environment. In addition to the suggestions under #3, there are some additional “toxins” to consider and while these toxins may not affect your liver directly, they may well be triggers to maladaptive behaviors such as the abuse of alcohol as a coping mechanism. What causes you stress? The answer usually falls into one or more of three categories; people, places or things. If there are any steps that can be taken to mitigate these factors, take them. Correlated to this is taking a relationship inventory. Take a piece of paper and divide it into two columns, relationships that serve you and relationships that do not serve you. Every relationship in your life must be placed in one of these columns. If you approach this exercise with a truthful lens, you will have a better understanding of toxic relationships in your life and then you can make informed choices.”

10 Biggest Concerns About The Metaverse According To Reddit Screen Rant
10 Biggest Concerns About The Metaverse According To Reddit Screen Rant
10 Biggest Concerns About The Metaverse, According To Reddit – Screen Rant https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/10-biggest-concerns-about-the-metaverse-according-to-reddit-screen-rant/ With fans of the technology excited for Meta‘s long-anticipated announcement of the Project Cambria VR headset in October, it seems like the company’s vision for the Metaverse is slowly getting closer. For some, however, it’s a futile exercise until a lot more concerns about the Metaverse are answered. Tech enthusiasts took to Reddit to express some of their issues with the technology in its current form. From questions about data and privacy that have plagued Meta since they invested heavily in the technology to issues of practicality, these are their top concerns. Ever since Facebook announced it was changing its branding to Meta in order to help it get to the forefront of this technology, critics and consumers alike have expressed concern that a company with a poor reputation in regards to data and privacy might be responsible for such a potentially immersive concept. Redditor PointandStare stressed this point, calling it a “Massive data and privacy nightmare.” This claim isn’t unfounded, as Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen warned in an interview with AP that the company was again trying to use the technology to harvest data in an irresponsible way. Meta has repeatedly denied these claims but many don’t see any reason to trust the tech giant. Most People Don’t Like Using VR For Long Periods The development and improvement of VR technology are key to the Metaverse becoming viable for mainstream consumers and, whilst the Oculus has been steadily adding more to the experience, some think this is going to always be a problem. Redditor a_pen_in_time comments they “can’t see it picking up” in the future, explaining that from their own experience, the “motion sickness or the disconnect of being in a visually different place than reality” means most people just don’t like using VR headsets for extended, uninterrupted periods. No matter how much neater or more comfortable headsets become, it might not solve that fundamental issue. The Technology Isn’t There Yet Though the Metaverse and VR have their fans, especially when it comes to modern VR gaming, it’s still arguably quite niche. Redditor a_curious_koala attributes this to the “clunky” nature of the technology in its current state and argues that the Metaverse will only “happen when the tech evolves.” Whilst this also means that its rise to become mainstream is inevitable once technology rises to meet it and makes the whole experience less expensive and more convenient, this future may be some way off. This could be bad news for those hoping that the Metaverse will explode in popularity anytime soon. People Are Already Exhausted From Online Communication While the rise of Zoom and other tools for remote collaborative working and gaming during the pandemic has meant increased attention to the idea of the Metaverse, it also brings with it another potential concern. Redditor WVA1999 thinks that the idea of “walking around a virtual world all day” doesn’t have much appeal after the strains of the pandemic and lockdowns. There’s some evidence to back this up, with Wall Street Journal reporting that the time adults in the U.S. spent online went up significantly during the pandemic. Arguably, this makes the Metaverse seem more feasible, as people already spend so much time online but, for some people, the last thing they want is another reason to spend more time immersed in the online world. The potential of the Metaverse might be very real, but that doesn’t mean the current interest in it from big corporations necessarily comes from a sincere belief in the power of the technology. Redditor Moggy-Man is concerned that it’s largely being used as a marketing strategy at the moment, especially by Meta. They call Meta a “marketing distraction” to try and put the company at the forefront of consumers’ minds again and say they “don’t believe it has any real true motivation beyond that.” Indeed, many have been unimpressed by Meta’s showcases so far, which seem to be more about trying to make their Metaverse seem marketable than actually exploring the technology’s potential. People Might Not Want To Live In A Virtual World One of the promises of the Metaverse is that consumers will be happy to live in a virtual reality world thanks to the limitless potential it offers compared to the real world. However, Redditor tehsheepdog thinks there might be a major issue with this that hasn’t been addressed by the technology’s proponents yet. They say that the appeal of gaming and the online world is that they offer “a temporary escape from reality” and that this appeal disappears when the “game or world becomes reality.” In presenting the Metaverse as somewhere people will socialize, work, and live in, it loses that all-important escapist element and risks losing a lot of consumers. Its Uses Will Be More Superficial Than People Are Saying The Metaverse promises to change things like how everyone learns and works, and there are already some incredibly immersive VR games and experiences. But Redditor EvidenceBase2000 thinks that, when the Metaverse is really upon us, its uses will be a lot more superficial. They envision it putting the focus a lot more on “image,” “social status,” and being full of explicit content when it does become more mainstream. Although there might not be a lot of evidence to suggest this yet, it’s true that the squeaky clean, friendly version of the Metaverse being marketed right now is unlikely to be an accurate portrayal of how it ends up being in reality. One thing many people have pointed out about the Metaverse is that the concept of a virtual world that the user spends long periods immersed in is nothing new, at least to anyone who’s gotten into an extremely addictive video game before. Redditor mas901 points out that there’s an issue people might be overlooking here. They relate the Metaverse to their experience with World of Warcraft and go as far as to say “I would often play it until I literally pass out unconscious” and the game “became my purpose of life.” For people who are at risk of becoming obsessively addicted, the Metaverse could provide an even more immersive version of this same idea. The Metaverse Is Being Driven By Corporate Interests Whilst it would be nice to imagine that the Metaverse becoming mainstream would be driven by those genuinely enthusiastic to bring an exciting new technology to consumers, some think the way it’s being presented now is all a little too familiar. One Redditor spells out the problem, saying “if the state of social media is any indication, [the Metaverse] will be completely driven by corporate interests.” Whereas Meta’s presentation of a more immersive virtual environment might please investors, it’s reminiscent of current social media which is very obviously more interested in keeping the user endlessly scrolling and watching ads than actually providing an interesting experience. For some consumers, this overly corporate aspect doesn’t appeal much. Though some continue to doubt that Mark Zuckerberg’s massive gamble in turning Facebook into Meta and investing everything into the future of the technology will pay off, it’s impossible to argue the company hasn’t managed to get itself a pretty big stake in the future of the Metaverse and that’s worrying for some. Redditor junktech thinks the biggest concern with the Metaverse is Meta itself “and the guy managing it.” Like many, they feel that “money and power” have always been the primary aim of the company and dominance of the Metaverse “would only give them more control.” Of course, it remains to be seen if Meta’s gamble does pay off, but not everyone is eager about the future of the Metaverse if Mark Zuckerberg is the one leading the way. Here’s When Traders Can Expect Next Crypto Bull Run! – Coinpedia Fintech News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/heres-when-traders-can-expect-next-crypto-bull-run-coinpedia-fintech-news/ The Bitcoin market cycles display several unusual asymmetries. At the end of a bull market, investors tend to get overly optimistic, leading to a temporary parabolic price surge. When a bull market is nearing its end, rapid price growth poses a risk of bursting the speculative bubble, and it can be seen that the participants become greedy.   According to cryptoquant cryptoquant On-Chain Followers : 0 View profile CEO ki young ju ki young ju founder and ceo at cryptoquant Ki-Young Ju, the Founder, and CEO of CryptoQuant, a South Korean on-chain analytics platform, is a cryptocurrency newcomer. Ju worked as a software developer before founding CryptoQuant in 2019. Before that, he worked on a different type of analysis, focusing on business. Ju began to focus more on the cryptocurrency space, with CryptoQuant attempting to provide indications and tools for professional Bitcoin, Ether, and stable coin analysts and traders. EntrepreneurInvestorMarket Analyst Followers : 0 View profile , the next Bitcoin parabolic bull run could be sparked by the transfer of USDC held by TradFi institutions to exchanges. In his recent analysis, Ki Young Ju has just pointed out a new factor to watch out for to identify the next bitcoin org bitcoin org Event OrganiserTechnologyPayment solution Followers : 0 View profile (BTC) parabolic bull run. Read on! Young Ju’s 4 Signs: The expert tweeted that the bull run may begin if large amounts of the dollar-pegged stablecoin USD Coin (USDC) shall flood into the exchanges. The next #Bitcoin parabolic bull run might begin when massive $USDC flows into exchanges. For now, 94% of the USDC supply is outside exchanges, some of which are owned by TradFis like BlackRock, Fidelity, Goldman Sachs, etc. They’ll move when they get orders from their clients. pic.twitter.com/Bqenvgugw1 — Ki Young Ju (@ki_young_ju) October 7, 2022 Ju cites statistics showing that, at present, 94% of USDC in circulation can’t be bought or sold on an exchange. Mainstream financial organizations like blackrock blackrock Fintech SolutionAdvisoryInvestment platform Followers : 0 View profile , Fidelity, and  goldman sachs goldman sachs Multinational Investment Bank Followers : 0 View profile , among others, hold the vast majority of this supply. The off-exchange tokens will be issued in the market when the clients of these institutions place orders for the USDC to be deployed, Ju added, possibly igniting the bull rally. Later, he elaborated that “crypto-native stablecoins” such as BUSD and USDT have been coming into exchanges, in contrast to the preferred USDC of institutional investors. Despite the bear market, the amount of Binance USD (BUSD) available on exchanges has increased noticeably. Currently, 70% of the available supply can be found on exchanges. This may be a sign that crypto locals are starting to save up some money. Tether (USDT), meanwhile, has 25% of its supply listed on exchanges.   The On-Chain Activity: What Does It Indicate? To wait out the market dip, investors have been stockpiling Bitcoin, according to the company’s CEO, who also observed that older Bitcoins now make up 74% of the total market cap. Another on-chain statistic that indicates high investor trust is Bitcoin’s hash rate. According to data from YCharts, the bitcoin hash rate—a measure of the amount of computer power devoted to safeguarding the network—has increased by almost 90% in the last year. The Bottom Line In any case, the two phases of the market cycle share a fundamental trait: identifying their respective apexes and minima is limited to retrospect. Since most investors expect either greater increases or falls when prices are at their extremes, they never appear clear when they are first forming. Was this writing helpful? Family Affair: US Army Pursues Three Synced Electronic Warfare Systems – C4ISRNet https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/family-affair-us-army-pursues-three-synced-electronic-warfare-systems-c4isrnet/ WASHINGTON — The U.S. Army is assembling a family of systems to provide soldiers with electronic warfare, signals intelligence and cyber capabilities that they can employ from near and far, on the ground and in the air. The projects — essentially siblings — are known as the Terrestrial Layer System-Brigade Combat Team, TLS-BCT; the Terrestrial Layer System-Echelons Above Brigade, TLS-EAB; and the Multi-Function Electronic Warfare-Air Large, or MFEW-AL. Each serves its own purpose and is in its own stage of development. But what Army and industry officials emphasize is their future synergy: how each piece fits neatly into the puzzle of electromagnetic spectrum domination. “We don’t expect these systems to do their own mission; they have to be used in tandem, whether we’re using an MFEW-Air Large in the air to get range [or] looking at long-range precision fires with [TLS-EAB],” William Utroska, who works with the Army’s Program Executive Office Intelligence, Electronic Warfare and Sensors, told reporters in August at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. “That’s one of the points I wanted to make upfront,” he said. “We foresee these systems being mutual, used in tandem, in order to provide the commander the best effects.” Electronic warfare is a fight for control of the spectrum, which militaries use for situational awareness, communications, weapons guidance and more. This contest is increasingly important as more advanced technologies are deployed on the battlefield and troops try to minimize their signatures to avoid detection. The Army in July awarded Lockheed Martin a $58.8 million contract for TLS-BCT. The other transaction authority agreement runs through October 2023. The company is expected to provide prototypes mounted to Stryker combat vehicles that are ready for operational assessment and issuance to an initial unit. “It’s really an exciting time for TLS-BCT,” Maj. Derek Vanino, an assistant product manager with the terrestrial spectrum warfare portfolio at PEO IEW&S, said during an August roundtable. “We’ve made a lot of progress with our industry partner.” The service in August inked separate deals with Lockheed and General Dynamics Mission Systems for TLS-EAB concepts and demonstrations. The first phase is valued at $15 million over 11 months. Compared to its TLS-BCT relative, TLS-EAB is meant to reach farther and interface with larger footprints and formations. “We’re going to be designed to deliver long-range sense and effect, integrated SIGINT, EW and radio frequency-enabled cyber. But we’re going to do it at longer range and at echelons that do not have that capability organically at this time: division, corps and theater,” Maj. Joseph Fink, also an assistant product manager with the terrestrial spectrum warfare portfolio, said at the same event. “We also have different target sets. We have different signals of interest at each echelon. And those are being developed in real time.” The self-contained MFEW-AL pod is also produced by Lockheed. It was intended for mounting on an MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone. The pod garnered the applause of Army Under Secretary Gabe Camarillo, who observed a prototype in the field this summer, courtesy of PEO IEW&S. Together, the three systems are expected to boost soldier situational awareness and efficacy in future fights, potentially against technologically savvy opponents such as China and Russia. “What’s important about this is all three programs have been architected to cooperate,” Deon Viergutz, vice president of spectrum convergence at Lockheed, said in a Sept. 26 interview. “Think about it on a battlefield: They’re part of an integrated, networked family of systems.” Among other factors, Viergutz credits a shared approach for the success of each endeavor thus far. Rapidly upgradable and flexible equipment is important to the Army, according to service officials. “What has enabled it is a common architecture, hardware and software,” Viergutz said. “And that’s what really lays the groundwork for the Army to be able to actually achieve these programs as part of a family of systems.” Colin Demarest is a reporter at C4ISRNET, where he covers military networks, cyber and IT. Colin previously covered the Department of Energy and its National Nuclear Security Administration — namely Cold War cleanup and nuclear weapons development — for a daily newspaper in South Carolina. Colin is also an award-winning photographer.

Did You Know: Lufthansa Will Let You Book A Mystery Vacation? Simple Flying
Did You Know: Lufthansa Will Let You Book A Mystery Vacation? Simple Flying
Did You Know: Lufthansa Will Let You Book A Mystery Vacation? – Simple Flying https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/did-you-know-lufthansa-will-let-you-book-a-mystery-vacation-simple-flying/ German flag carrier Lufthansa is offering passengers the chance to book flights to a surprise destination, potentially saving them a significant amount of money in the process. The concept, branded as Lufthansa Surprise, is a unique way for passengers to add some excitement to their travel plans. The process is simple – passengers choose one of nine different travel themes, their preferred dates of travel, and a departure point of either Frankfurt Airport (FRA) or Munich Airport (MUC). The price of the booking is then displayed, and once payment has been processed, the destination is revealed. Bookings can be made from one to 42 days in advance, and passengers can choose to exclude individual destinations from each travel theme. However, according to Lufthansa, the more flexible they are, the more money they stand to save. Lufthansa Surprise allows passengers to save money by booking flights to a mystery destination. Photo: Getty Images What are the travel themes? There are nine different travel themes available. Example destinations from within each theme and their prices are listed below (departures from Frankfurt): Worth Seeing – from €79 ($77) – Ibiza, Vilnius Go East – from €89 ($87) – Dubrovnik, Riga Arts and Sights – from €89 ($87) – Bordeaux, Santiago de Compostela The Great Outdoors – from €89 ($87) – Bergen, Valencia Follow the Sun – from €89 ($87) – Palma de Mallorca, Rhodes Party On – from €99 ($96) – Barcelona, Helsinki For Lovers – €99 ($96) – Florence, Malta Shop Till You Drop – €99 ($96) – Copenhagen, Milan Urban Adventures – from €109 ($106) – Madrid, Reykjavik All bookings are made on Lufthansa’s Economy fare, which includes one 8kg item of cabin baggage. Passengers can choose to add ancillary services such as checked baggage and seat selection. Once booked, the flights cannot be changed and are non-refundable. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the airline’s 24-hour free cancelation policy does not apply in this case either. There are some significant savings to be had – according to Lufthansa, savings average €250 ($243) per person. For example, on a dummy booking, flights departing mid-week in October to a ‘Follow the Sun’ destination were available for €90 ($88), whereas regular flight bookings to the potential destinations, including Palma de Mallorca and Faro, were coming in at over €300 ($292). As part of Lufthansa Surprise, passengers can select their travel dates and a travel theme. The destination is then revealed once the booking has been completed. Photo: Lufthansa Flights can also be credited to the passenger’s Miles & More account – Lufthansa’s frequent flyer program, which is due to be revamped in early 2024. The destinations available as part of Lufthansa Surprise are all within Europe. This means that flights will most likely be operated by the airline’s Airbus A320 family aircraft. Lufthansa currently has 187 Airbus narrowbody aircraft in its fleet, with 79 more Airbus A320neos and Airbus A321neos on order. Destination unknown Lufthansa is not the only airline to be offering flights to unknown destinations. This summer, ultra-low-cost carrier Wizz Air took 200 competition winners on a mystery journey from its hub at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH). The destination of Kutaisi (KUT) was only announced onboard once the aircraft had landed. Wizz Air recently ran a competition to fly to an unknown destination (Kutaisi), which was announced on arrival. Photo: Wizz Air While Wizz Air’s one-off competition was different from Lufthansa’s bookable flights, the concept of a surprise flight is an ingenious idea for airlines to fill seats on flights with otherwise lower load factors. Officials: Truck Bomb Damages Bridge Linking Crimea-Russia – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/officials-truck-bomb-damages-bridge-linking-crimea-russia-69news-wfmz-tv/ KHARKIV, Ukraine (AP) — A truck bomb Saturday caused a fire and the collapse of a section of a bridge linking Russia-annexed Crimea with Russia, Russian officials say, damaging a key supply artery for Moscow’s faltering war effort in southern Ukraine. The speaker of Crimea’s Kremlin-backed regional parliament immediately accused Ukraine, though the Kremlin didn’t apportion blame. Ukrainian officials have repeatedly threatened to strike the bridge and some lauded the attack, but Kyiv stopped short of claiming responsibility. The bombing came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin turned 70, dealing him a humiliating blow that could lead him to up the ante in his war on Ukraine. Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee said that the truck bomb caused seven railway cars carrying fuel to catch fire, resulting in a “partial collapse of two sections of the bridge.” The Crimean Peninsula holds symbolic value for Russia and is key to sustaining its military operations in the south. If the bridge is made inoperable, it would make it significantly more challenging to ferry supplies to the peninsula. While Russia seized the areas north of Crimea early during the invasion and built a land corridor to it along the Sea of Azov, Ukraine is pressing a counteroffensive to reclaim them. The bridge has train and automobile sections. Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee specified that the explosion and fire led to the collapse of the two sections of one of the two links of the automobile bridge, while another link was intact. Russia’s Energy Ministry said Crimea has enough fuel for 15 days, adding that it was working on ways to replenish stock. Authorities suspended passenger train traffic across the bridge until further notice. Putin was informed about the explosion and he ordered the creation of a government panel to deal with the emergency. The 19-kilometer (12-mile) bridge across the Kerch Strait linking the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov opened in 2018 and is the longest in Europe. It has provided an essential link to the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014. The $3.6 billion project is a tangible symbol of Moscow’s claims on Crimea. It was Russia’s only land link to the peninsula until Russian forces seized more Ukrainian territory on the northern end of the Sea of Azov in heavy fighting, particularly around the city of Mariupol, building a land corridor to Crimea earlier this year. The speaker of Crimea’s Kremlin-backed regional parliament blamed Ukraine for the explosion, but downplayed the severity of the damage and said it would be promptly repaired. “Now they have something to be proud of: over 23 years of their management, they didn’t manage to build anything worthy of attention in Crimea, but they’ve managed to damage the surface of the Russian bridge,” Vladimir Konstantinov, Chairman of the State Council of the Republic, wrote on Telegram. The parliamentary leader of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s party on Saturday stopped short of claiming that Kyiv was responsible for the incident but appeared to cast it as a consequence of Moscow’s takeover of Crimea and attempts to integrate the peninsula with the Russian mainland. “Russian illegal construction is starting to fall apart and catch fire. The reason is simple: if you build something explosive, then sooner or later it will explode,” David Arakhamia, the leader of the Servant of the People party, wrote on Telegram. “And this is just the beginning. Of all things, reliable construction is not something Russia is particularly famous for,” he said. Other Ukrainian officials were more celebratory while still stopping short of claiming responsibility. The secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Oleksiy Danilov, posted a video in his Twitter with Kerch Bridge on fire on the left side and video with Marilyn Monroe singing her famous “Happy Birthday Mr. President” on the right side. An advisor to Zelenskyy, Mykhailo Podolyak tweeted: “Crimea, the bridge, the beginning. Everything illegal must be destroyed, everything stolen must be returned to Ukraine, everything occupied by Russia must be expelled. In Moscow, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that “the reaction of the Kyiv regime to the destruction of civilian infrastructure shows its terrorist nature.” In August, Russia suffered a series of explosions at an airbase and munitions depot in Crimea, which underlined its vulnerability. The blast on the bridge occurred hours after explosions rocked the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv early Saturday, sending towering plumes of smoke into the sky and triggering a series of secondary explosions. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said on Telegram that the early-morning explosions were the result of missile strikes in the center of the city. He said that the blasts sparked fires at one of the city’s medical institutions and a nonresidential building. There were no immediate reports of casualties. The blasts came hours after Russia concentrated attacks in its increasingly troubled invasion of Ukraine on areas it illegally annexed, while the death toll from earlier missile strikes on apartment buildings in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia rose to 17. On Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to human rights organizations in his Russia and Ukraine, and to an activist jailed in Belarus, an ally of Moscow. Berit Reiss-Andersen, the committee’s chair, said the honor went to “three outstanding champions of human rights, democracy and peaceful coexistence,” though it was widely seen as a rebuke to Putin and his conduct of Europe’s worst armed conflict since World War II. Putin signed documents on Wednesday to illegally claim four regions of Ukraine as Russian territory, including the Zaporizhzhia region that is home to Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, whose reactors were shut down last month. That move was foreshadowed by Russia’s annexation of Crimea in March 2014, which was carried out after Moscow alleged residents of the peninsula had voted to join with Russia. That move was widely condemned, and prompted sanctions from the U.S. and the European Union. Adam Schreck reported from Kyiv. Francisco Seco contributed to this report from Kharkiv. From an inflation perspective, it wasn’t a very different situation in the grocery aisles from right now. But food academics say a change in culture, demographics and society’s emphasis on healthy eating means that people will adapt to rising food costs in a different way this time around. If inflation in the seventies was about embracing cheap processed goods, academics believe today’s consumers will try to keep eating healthy food while reducing waste. Sylvain Charlebois, a professor specializing in food distribution, security and safety at Dalhousie University, says the first thing that may come to mind with seventies budget food is Kraft Dinner, highly processed meat products such as Spam, and other canned or frozen goods. “Back then, local food wasn’t important, nutrition wasn’t as much of an emphasis, dilemmas around processing foods wasn’t as front and centre, so it was a very different context,” said Dr. Charlebois, who also said the variety of goods available now is a world apart from four decades ago. He estimated a grocery store in 1980 might have had 3,000 unique products. Today, that number is probably closer to 15,000. “People are living healthier lives, we live a long time, the science has come a long way and our diet is much more internationalized than before,” Dr. Charlebois said. Back in 1978, Nell Holland told The Washington Post that her family was eating more beans, cornbread, hot dogs and spaghetti, and eating meat only twice per week. “A big roast beef is out of the question,” she told a reporter. The good – and bad – news about inflation How to reduce your grocery bill without sacrificing nutrition For those on an ultralow budget, Dr. Charlebois said there are three key products where the price has barely changed for the past 20 years: peanut butter, tofu and bananas. “For people who are struggling and looking for cheap nutritional sources, bananas are always going to win,” Dr. Charlebois said. But data from a recent Dalhousie University poll of 5,000 Canadians in September show that inflation these days is affecting how people search for deals and cheaper brands, rather than different kinds of food altogether. Twenty-one per cent said they bought more private-label products (grocery store brands such as President’s Choice) rather than name brand, and 20 per cent said they bought more “buy tonight” deals – food that is nearing its expiration date. The largest changes didn’t have to do with shopping at all, though – 40 per cent of respondents said they were simply trying to waste less of the groceries they buy. Cutting waste is top of mind for Sarah Heidt when she shops and cooks for her husband and two kids, and she said it’s the main way she’s able to keep her family healthy when budgeting for food. “It’s definitely not easy,” said Ms. Heidt, who works from home as an immigration consultant in Aurora, Ont. “We eat 99 per cent at home … and I don’t want to sacrifice feeding my family good healthy meals.” Just before the pandemic, Ms. Heidt said a visit from her Iranian mother-in-law taught her different ways to be resourceful when cooking. The knowledge has been something she leans on during high inflation. Now, if she buys a rotisserie chicken at the grocery store, she uses the leftover bones to make her own chicken stock. When cooking with meat, she’ll add lentils to the mixture to help stretch how many meals a portion of beef can create. And she has stopped buying canned beans, opting for dried beans because they are much cheaper. While those tactics may take longer, she said, relying on her Instant Pot helps cut down the amount of time and effort involved. She also enjoyed occasionally shopping at farmers markets and Costco in the past, but now only shops at stores that can price match. Ms. Heidt said the price of rice has risen, so she cooks more meals with potatoes instead. On this front, there are similarities with the past. Margaret Robison told The Post in 1978 she was cooking “more potatoes than usual.” Ms. Heidt also often buys frozen instead of fresh goods, and is careful to make sure nothing is wasted when she does purchase fresh produce and meat. All her decisions are based around keeping meals healthy and balanced, she said. The tactics are a far cry from norms in the seventies. The Canadian Press in 1978 reported that salt, sugar and fat in diets had risen as inflation hammered Canadians. Today, there are still options for people who don’t want to spend as much time in the kitchen to rehydrate beans and make their own stocks. Michael Widener, an associate professor in transportation and health at the University of Toronto, said anything with a long shelf life will be more resistant to inflation. While that includes obvious products such as frozen meat and canned goods, Dr. Widener also pointed out that fruits such as apples, which last relatively longer than other produce, will be more resistant to change. Any produce that is generally sourced locally will also be more stable in price. “Different crops that are produced in Canada will be a little easier for the supply chain to move into our grocery stores, versus ones imported from places like South America or elsewhere,” Dr. Widener said. People looking for alternative protein sources to meat could also eat more lentils, beans or eggs. Dr. Charlebois said that while egg prices are rising fast, they’re still much cheaper than meat.

Before the resolution had been reached, the drivers’ post-race media obligations had resulted in a back and forth as both put forward their views of the incident. Norris makes accusation Both Verstappen and Red Bull team principal Christian Horner argued that Norris was breaking a “gentleman’s agreement” between drivers not to overtake on out-laps, but the Briton was initially adamant the stewards should take action. GAMA Is Onboarding Crew Members For Its Space-Themed Metaverse | Bitcoinist.com – Bitcoinist https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/gama-is-onboarding-crew-members-for-its-space-themed-metaverse-bitcoinist-com-bitcoinist/ Los Angeles, September 19 – GAMA has launched its metaverse, the GAMA Space Station (GSS). The project, which is focused on interoperability, is opening its doors to other communities in the blockchain and web3 ecosystem. This initiative has already begun with the recent announcement with members of the CloneX community, who have shown off their NFT characters inside the GSS. We are not alone in the universe GAMA is the Web3 project behind the GSS metaverse. The project is focused on delivering an immersive virtual experience. As such, the GSS plans on featuring innovative game mechanics along with an immersive social ecosystem, which combines to create a realistic experience that aims to set the standard for metaverse projects. This is accomplished with Unreal Engine 5. This game engine allows GAMA to integrate high-end graphics and quality audio, lighting, and animations into the experience. This aligns with its goal to bring “innovative gaming mechanics that blend the digital world with reality.” GAMA isn’t the only Web3 project out there. The blockchain ecosystem is full of platforms doing their own thing. Each tries to create a dedicated community and offer members unique experiences. And, while that has its benefits, it would be great if these platforms would regularly collaborate to create new experiences for users. With this in mind, GAMA puts a special emphasis on interoperability in their metaverse. The goal is for people in other communities to experience the project’s immersive entertainment experiences. “We are not alone. Interoperability is a key factor in the Metaverse. We know we are not alone in the universe & welcome more communities to join our mission aboard the GSS.” The first beneficiary of this initiative is the CloneX NFT community. Through the collaboration, CloneX NFT owners can see their characters in the GAMA metaverse and will soon be able to freely experience the metaverse with their characters brought to life. Recently, one CloneX owner even incorporated an image of his GSS CloneX as an album cover art. Merging worlds While GAMA’s focus is on providing an incredible metaverse experience, the project has also realized the value of physical, real-world offerings. Thus, it strives to include a unique user experience through GAMA Studios via graphic storytelling formats represented through both digital and physical collectibles. GAMA’s NFTs give holders access to real-world events where they can interact with each other in person. This deepens the sense of community and belonging in the GAMA metaverse. About GAMA GAMA is a Web3 platform that is building a new form of entertainment through its metaverse. In addition to providing an exclusive experience for its own community, GAMA is applying a universal standard by offering the experience to other NFT communities as well. GAMA NFTs are the core of its GSS Metaverse narrative, each one representing a crew member that is traveling to space to harness alternative forms of energy. GAMA recently teased its first playable game, Dark Horizon, which will be the first extension to its metaverse. The rules announced Friday by President Joe Biden’s administration include a measure to cut China off from certain chips made anywhere in the world with U.S. equipment, vastly expanding its reach in its bid to slow Beijing’s technological and military advances. Taiwan, a major chip producer, is home to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) (2330.TW), the world’s largest contract chipmaker and a major supplier to companies including Apple Inc (AAPL.O). The government continues to maintain close contact with manufacturers and supports them in investing in factory expansion and supplying products to the world for technological development, the ministry said. TSMC declined to comment on the U.S. rules, saying it was in its quiet period ahead of quarterly earnings next week. Smaller competitor United Microelectronics Corp (2303.TW) also declined comment ahead of its earnings release later this month. Taiwan has its own concerns about China, especially efforts by Chinese companies to poach chip talent and technical know-how. The government tightly restricts Taiwanese chip investment in China, the island’s largest trading partner. Taiwan’s worries have gained pace as China mounts regular military drills near the island in an attempt to force it into accepting Beijing’s sovereignty. The United States is Taiwan’s most important international supporter and arms supplier, despite the absence of formal diplomatic ties. Taiwan Economy Minister Wang Mei-hua will visit the United States next week to respond to what her office called “concerns” about supply chains and geopolitical issues. She will visit U.S. tech firms that are major customers of Taiwanese semiconductor companies.
