Dollar Climbs As U.S. Jobs Report Is Stronger Than Expected – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/dollar-climbs-as-u-s-jobs-report-is-stronger-than-expected-reuters/
NEW YORK, Oct 7 (Reuters) – The U.S. dollar strengthened against major currencies on Friday after U.S. data showing employers hired more workers than expected in September, suggesting the Federal Reserve will likely stick to its aggressive tightening policy for now.
The dollar reversed early losses against the Japanese yen and was last up 0.2% at 145.42 yen. The dollar hit a 24-year peak of 145.90 yen last month, which had prompted an intervention by Japanese authorities to shore up the fragile yen.
The euro fell against the dollar, extending losses after the U.S. jobs report, and was last down 0.6% at $0.9735.

“Any sign of U.S. economic weakness will weigh heavily on the dollar, but it certainly didn’t come with nonfarm payrolls,” said Adam Button, chief currency analyst at ForexLive in Toronto.
Nonfarm payrolls increased by 263,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department said in its closely watched employment report. Data for August was unrevised to show 315,000 jobs added as previously reported. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast 250,000 job gains, with estimates ranging from as low as 127,000 to as high as 375,000.
Overnight, a number of Fed officials reinforced the view that the central bank is nowhere near finished with raising rates as it seeks to tame inflation, and interest rates are expected to go up further. read more
U.S. inflation data, due next week, will be watched closely as well and could prove influential in setting investors’ expectations for the Fed, according to strategists.
The U.S. central bank, in an effort to tame inflation, has hiked its policy rate from near-zero at the beginning of this year to the current range of 3.00% to 3.25%, and last month signaled more large increases were on the way this year.
A U.S. dollar index which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies was last up 0.6% and hit its highest in a week. The index is up about 18% for the year so far.
Sterling was down 0.9% at $1.1060, having fallen 1.4% overnight. It jumped earlier this week, after the British government reversed a planned cut to the highest rate of income tax.
The dollar also gained against China’s offshore yuan Friday, and was last up 0.7% at 7.1313.

Tech Tracker: Starbucks Enters The Metaverse – Nation’s Restaurant News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/tech-tracker-starbucks-enters-the-metaverse-nations-restaurant-news/
Starbucks is entering the metaverse. The Seattle-based coffee giant in September announced the creation of Starbucks Odyssey, a Web3 experience launching in late 2022. With Odyssey, Starbucks Rewards members can buy and trade collectible limited-edition NFTs to unlock new rewards benefits and complete interactive activities to earn NFT digital badges known as “journey stamps.”
With this announcement, Starbucks joins its other colleagues that have also experimented with interactive NFT trading and games in the metaverse, including Chipotle, Wendy’s and most recently, Taco Bell.
Starbucks is following the recent metaverse trend of lowering the barrier to entry for those without crypto know-how: the Starbucks Odyssey experience will not require users to use an Oculus Quest 2 (or any other special equipment) and it can be entered through the Starbucks Rewards app. Users also don’t need to have a crypto wallet to purchase the collectible NFTs.
According to Starbucks, the interactive games will encourage users to collect these digital badges, which will also be assigned points values based on their rarity and can be bought or sold on the blockchain to unlock benefits like a virtual espresso martini-making class, access to exclusive merchandise, invitations to events at Starbucks Roasteries and even international vacations, like a trip to the Starbucks coffee farm in Costa Rica.
Each NFT will feature original artwork created by Starbucks partners and outside artists, and a portion of the proceeds of each NFT sale will go toward unspecified causes.

There is an old saying: If you don’t vote, you can’t complain. But that isn’t true. In the United States, having the right to vote and not exercising it doesn’t cancel the right to free speech.
Choosing to not vote may be a principled position if the choices on the ballot aren’t appealing or offend one’s principles. That is a statement. But wanting to vote and not being able to because you’re not registered? That’s a shame.
To vote in the Nov. 8 election, you must be registered by the Tuesday deadline. Check your voter registration status or download a voter registration form at VoteTexas.gov.
Tuesday is the last day to register to vote.

‘Strength across the board’: Romans breaks down the September jobs report
01:26
Friday’s jobs report showed the US economy added 263,000 jobs in September – a respectable number, but slower than in past months.
The Federal Reserve is rooting for a slowdown. That will help take some of the air out the the ballooning economy that has, in part, sent inflation surging.
Stocks fell as investors were looking for a weaker-than-expected jobs total. September came in slightly hotter than forecast.
TGIF? Not this F. Stocks continued their swoon late Friday afternoon, with the Dow plunging more than 650 points, or 2.2%. All 30 Dow stocks were in the red.
The S&P 500 was down 2.8%. Tech stocks really took it on the chin, with the Nasdaq Composite plunging nearly 4%. The three indexes are all still up about 1% to 2% this week, however, thanks to big rallies Monday and Tuesday.
Remember those ginormous market rallies from Monday and Tuesday? Ancient history.
Stocks are still up about 2% for the week thanks to those big rallies, but the major indexes took a big tumble Friday after the jobs report reignited worries about more big interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. The CNN Business Fear & Greed Index is once again showing signs of Extreme Fear as well.
Concerns about Corporate America’s profits didn’t help matters.
Chip giant AMD (AMD) plunged more than 10% after warning that sales would take a hit due to slowing demand for personal computers. And denim wasn’t in fashion on Wall Street Friday. Levi Strauss (LEVI) tumbled 9% after the company said a strong dollar was eating into sales.
The Dow was down nearly 450 points, or 1.5% in midday trading.
The S&P 500 fell 2%.
The Nasdaq Composite dipped nearly 3%.

Americans are still getting a decent sized bump in their weekly paychecks. Wages rose 5% in September over the past year, according to Friday’s jobs report. The problem is that the pace of inflation is still higher than that. In other words, shopping for stuff like groceries and paying monthly rent takes a huge bite out of that higher compensation.
The Federal Reserve wants to see wage growth slow. If that happens, the hope is that companies will be less likely to keep raising consumer prices at a breakneck pace.
For one, these businesses won’t have as much pressure on their bottom line from paying higher salaries. And companies also will have to realize that if their customer has less in their pocket, price increases may backfire and lead to lower demand.
Consumer prices surged 8.3% year-over-year in August. The government will report CPI numbers for September next week. Economists are expecting a slight slowdown, to 8.1%. The Fed (and American shoppers) would love to see that number fall even further. The sooner the better.
US stocks opened lower on Friday as investors digested a September jobs report that came in hotter than expected.
The U.S. economy added 263,000 jobs in September, higher than analyst estimates of 250,000. The unemployment rate came in at 3.5%, down from 3.7% in August.
Strong employment data indicates that the Federal Reserve will continue with its aggressive interest rate hikes to cool the economy and fight persistently high inflation, causing economic pain.
The Dow fell by 320 points, or 1.1%, on Friday morning.
The S&P 500 was down 1.5%.
The Nasdaq Composite was 2% lower.

The September jobs numbers were probably strong enough to keep the Federal Reserve on track to (chant like a high school cheerleader) be aggressive, be be aggressive with regards to rate hikes.
According to fed funds futures on the CME, investors are now pricing in a more than an 80% chance of a fourth straight three-quarters of a percentage point hike at the Fed’s November 2 meeting. That’s up from about a 57% probability of another 75 basis point hike a week ago and just a little more than 1% chance a month ago.
What’s more, traders are now betting that there’s about a 15% probability of yet another three-quarter point rate increase at the Fed’s December 14 meeting. The market was pricing in zero chance of that happening only a week ago.
It’s no wonder then that stocks are sliding Friday following the jobs report.
(Mary Altaffer/AP)
Investors were less than pleased after September’s job totals came in a bit stronger than expected. With 263,000 jobs added to the US economy last month, the Fed’s rate hikes may not be having the slowdown effect policymakers had hoped for.
The Fed was hoping that a long series of historic rate hikes would slow down the economy and bring inflation lower. But the job market remains stubbornly robust, which means the Fed has more room to keep hiking rates.
Rate hikes eat into corporate profits, which has sent stocks sinking sharply in 2022.
Dow futures fell 140 points or 0.5%.
S&P 500 futures were down 0.8%.
Nasdaq futures were 1.3% lower.
The fever hasn’t broken yet for America’s employment market.
The economy added 263,000 jobs in September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. That’s slightly higher than economists’ estimates of 250,000, according to Refinitiv.
While still a robust headline number, it is the second consecutive month of falling totals, pointing to a labor market slowdown.
The unemployment rate fell back to 3.5% from 3.7%.
Ahead of another consequential jobs report, stock futures remained relatively unchanged.
Investors are likely hoping for a subdued jobs report. That could mean that the Fed has less room to keep hiking rates by historic levels in its fight against inflation.
Dow futures were up 25 points, or 0.1%.
S&P 500 futures fell 0.1%.
Nasdaq futures fell 0.4%.
US oil rose 0.9% to $89 a barrel. Average US gas prices rose to $3.89 a gallon.
When the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its latest monthly jobs report at 8:30 am ET, all eyes will be on whether the labor market is showing signs of loosening up – one of many crucial factors that will help the Federal Reserve determine its next steps in its fight against decades-high inflation.
The US economy is forecast to have added 250,000 jobs in September, which would be the lowest monthly jobs gain since December 2020. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 3.7%, according to Refinitiv estimates.
August jobs data already indicated that the historically tight labor market has loosened by a notch. The jobs report for that month found that America added 315,000 positions, a much lower level than the 512,000 average job gains over the past 12 months. The number of open positions also fell, sinking by 1.1 million, the largest monthly decline outside of the pandemic, according to the Jobs Openings and Labor Turnover Survey released on Tuesday.

If Friday’s headline number comes in above 250K, Wall Street may read that as a sign the Fed is going to have to keep raising interest rates, adding to already-significant strain across financial markets.
If it comes in well below 250K, you might see some renewed optimism that the Fed’s policies are starting to have their intended effect, and it may not need to keep inflicting pain on the economy.
It’s hard to overstate just how delicate the situation is. In fact, just today the IMF’s managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, described the world as being in a period of “historic fragility” after a torrent of economic shocks over the last two-and-a-half years, from the pandemic to the war in Ukraine.
That’s why the Fed’s decisions are being so closely scrutinized. When the Fed raises rates as aggressively as it has in the past several months, it creates painful ripple effects around the globe, pushing the US dollar’s value up and forcing other central banks to raise their own rates as well. All of which could tip the world’s biggest economies into a recession, the UN has warned.
Investors and economists will be hyper-focused on wages in today’s jobs report.
The Fed and others would be happy to see wage growth slow down. Less money in our wallets leaves us with less spending power, and when we stop buying things, prices go down. In theory, anyway. That’s just one part of the large and complicated inflation puzzle.
In the last jobs report, wages were up 5.2% over the last 12 months. That’s historically high (woo!) but it doesn’t keep up with inflation, which is hovering around 8% year over year (boo!).
Wages pose a particular conundrum for the Fed. It wants us to shop just a little less – but not a lot less. Unfortunately, there’s no magic formula for how much wages need to go down to make a dent.
The risk of wages going down too much, too quickly raises the risk of falling into stagflation, which is as unpleasant as it sounds. Stagflation – a portmanteau of stagnation and inflation – is when economic activity slows while prices continue rising.
When the government releases its latest monthly jobs report on Friday, all eyes will be searching for signs that the labor market is loosening up — a key factor weighing on the Federal Reserve as it figures out its next steps to fight inflation.
Economists expect the headline figure to show 250,000 jobs were added in last month. That would be the smallest monthly gain in nearly two years, and well below the average of more than 510,000 for the past 12 months.
Seems counter-intuitive, but the Fed (and much of Wall Street) is actually rooting for that number to go down.
Here’s the thing: Before the pandemic and its whiplash-inducing economic rebound, the US economy averaged about 200,000 new jobs each month.
So, while things are slowing down, they’re still pretty rob...

The J-Ram dinger:

The Rays appealed to second base that Rosario missed the bag, but they reviewed it and the call stands. It’s 2-1 Cleveland in the sixth. I imagine they’re in James Karinchak territory already.
Pinned
Guardians answer back
The lead lasted three batters. Amed Rosario singles, José Ramírez homered to almost the same exact spot as Siri to give Cleveland a 2-1 lead. Ramirez had a poor year against lefties but that’s out of character — he’s had little to no platoon split throughout his career. This game is yet another reminder it is hard to string together base hits in the postseason. Dingers will get you to heaven.
Pinned
The aforementioned Siri dinger. Bieber had a fastball leak back out over the plate. First career opposite field homer for Siri.
Pinned
Tampa strikes first
Jose Siri, who sent a ball to the warning track in his first at-bat, just went deep to right-center field for a sixth inning solo homer. First run of the game, first run of the postseason. Tampa’s offense isn’t great (21st in runs per game during the regular season) and they’re going to need guys like Siri to come up with important hits to advance in October.
Pinned
The Rays were the worst among playoff teams at hitting breaking balls during the regular season. One of the keys to Bieber’s outing so far has been the effectiveness of his slider: 14 thrown, nine swings against, five whiffs.
Pinned
I count four balls hit out of the infield in the air through 4.5 innings.
Pinned
Naylor, Cleveland’s first baseman today, is also bad against lefties. Not exactly the ideal combination to have out there in a game against a tough southpaw.
Pinned
Rays into the hit column
The Rays have their first hit: Harold Ramirez sent a single back up the middle to begin the fifth. The Guardians threatened last inning thanks to back-to-back one-out singles by Oscar Gonzalez and Josh Baylor, but Owen Miller banged into an inning-ending 5-5-3 double play. Nifty stretch by Ji-Man Choi at first. Miller hit .219/.290/.329 against lefties this year and he’s in at DH against McClanahan. Not great.
Pinned
Still scoreless through four. Rays don’t yet have a hit.
Pinned
Three quick innings
Both Shanes have been on point early in Game 1. There have been four baserunners total (two ground ball singles, a walk, and a fielder’s choice/error) and the two pitchers have only thrown 72 pitches combined. McClanahan hasn’t gotten much help from his defense but he looks good after a sluggish finish to the regular season. Bieber has yet to allow a hit, though Jose Siri did hit one to the warning track in dead center last inning.
Pinned
We’re still scoreless through three innings. This game is moving at a fast pace.
Pinned
The Rays have not been at home since Sept. 25. They played their final regular season home game on Sept. 25 and have since gone from Tampa to Cleveland to Houston to Boston to back to Cleveland now. And if they win this series, they have to go to New York.
Pinned
Dominant 1st for Bieber
After the ground ball by Díaz, Shane Bieber struck out Wander Franco and Randy Arozarena to cap off a 1-2-3 first inning. His fastball averaged 91.8 mph that inning, up a bit from his 91.3 mph season average (chalk it up to adrenaline). Bieber averaged 94.1 mph with his heater during his Cy Young season in 2020, though the velocity didn’t come all the way back following last year’s shoulder injury. He’s made it work (2.88 ERA in 200 IP in 2022) because his command his so good, his secondary pitchers are so good, and he’s a very smart pitcher.
Pinned
The first pitch of the 2022 postseason is a fastball off the plate for a ball by Shane Bieber. The second is a ground ball to second by Yandy Diaz.

Bitcoin Whales Accumulating BTC At Current Prices – What Do They Know? – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/bitcoin-whales-accumulating-btc-at-current-prices-what-do-they-know-cryptonews/

Bitcoin (BTC) whales are again accumulating BTC, with more and more traders now asking themselves what these whales know that the rest of us don’t.
According to data from the crypto analytics platform Santiment, the so-called Bitcoin whales, defined as wallet addresses holding between 100 BTC and 10,000 BTC, have added a total of 46,173 BTC to their holdings since September 27.
In a tweet published earlier this week, Santiment called the increase a “sustained accumulation” by whales and noted that this has been “a rarity in 2022.” The firm added that the increase in BTC holdings has come as large holdings of the stablecoin Tether (USDT) have dropped.
The finding indicates that some of the largest players in the Bitcoin ecosystem are using stablecoins to add to their BTC holdings. This also means that any price rallies seen in recent days have most likely been stablecoin-driven, without support from a significant level of fiat inflows.
It is widely believed in the crypto community that large inflows of fiat currency into Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is necessary for a new bull market to establish itself in a sustainable way.
Still, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that whales are among the first to position themselves for potential future rallies in the Bitcoin price. As a result, the positioning seen in the past few days could be a sign that the wealthiest Bitcoin holders are now betting that macroeconomic conditions will improve going forward and that this will ultimately help BTC move higher.
Meanwhile, the news that whales are now accumulating BTC comes after Santiment in late September reported that whale holdings of Bitcoin had dropped to the lowest level in 29 months, making up only 45.72% of the circulating BTC supply.
In a tweet at the time, the firm attributed the fall in whale investment interest to “fears of inflation and a world recession […].”

Wyko Tire Technology officials (from left) Rob Marcus, Mike Evans and Kenny McCleery stand at the firm’s booth during the 2022 ITEC gathering in Akron.
AKRON—Wyko Tire Technology recently celebrated a milestone anniversary. The company has been in operation for 45 years in the U.S., and commemorated the accomplishment on June 30 with current and former employees, their families and representatives from state and local economic development agencies.
Wyko first started operations in Dudley, England, in 1962. The company later opened a U.S. location in Greenback, Tenn., in 1977. This year is significant for both locations, marking the 60th anniversary for the Dudley location and the 45th for Greenback.
General Manager Mike Evans reached a milestone himself this year, having been with the company for 37 years. He said the company has been able to sustain business for so many years for several reasons.
“Innovation, communication, quality service and having the right people have been key to the company’s success,” Evans said at the International Tire Exhibition & Conference in Akron. “We’re always coming up with new ways for the customer to improve their productivity and uniformity. Plus, we always listen to the customer and design solutions to the customer’s needs. Then we always provide a high level of service to our manufacturers.”
Vice General Manager Kenny McCleery agreed.
“Ultimately, we solve problems by providing effective engineering solutions,” McCleery said.
Part of what sets Wyko apart from similar companies is that its products are customized to a specific machine, need or process. Both Evans and McCleery said developing strong relationships with clients is key.
“So much of our success starts with a simple conversation, but it can be a challenge to find the right person to discuss what their current needs may be,” McCleery said, “That is what also sets us apart. For 60 years we have successfully integrated our technology to our customer’s building platform and production. As a result, it has helped us build a reputation as a global premier tooling provider. We provide complete tooling inventories, but we also provide highly customized tooling solutions from a one-off to everything in between. Wyko is able to meet the larger mainstream needs and application-specific type projects.”
McCleery added that Wyko can offer custom solutions regardless of order volume, tire size or customer location. Wyko makes equipment mainly in the tire assembly part of production. Differences can occur in processes, construction or types of tires, such as motorcycle, earth moving or racing among others. The company is able to provide the equipment that allows the manufacturers to use their own unique processes and methods.
The professionals at Wyko work with customers’ own engineers and maintenance personnel to design and build an end product with a custom fit and a focus on maximizing productivity.
“When operators and maintenance personnel change from one size of tire to another, they don’t have to necessarily change our tooling because it is capable of the entire range of size of tires. Right along with that is enhancing their quality. The product that comes off our tooling is of higher quality and better uniformity than our competitors,” McCleery claimed.
The company also credits having the right people for the success and longevity of Wyko. There are 35 employees, with most located at the Tennessee location. Many have been there over 40 years. The company employs engineers, machinists, mechanical assemblers and fabricators designing and manufacturing product lines from raw materials to finished goods.
“We are constantly innovating and reinvesting in our operations. Precision is key,” Evans said. “Our product is precise, so all of our parts have to be as well. We have a certain culture at Wyko of dependability and integrity. We face the same problems as everyone else in manufacturing, in finding the right people, but we insist on a high level of performance out of our employees. It has helped lead to our long-term success.”

While there are some big changes and new technologies on the way for the tire industry, McCleery offered a few things that never change. Listening to the customers and providing value to them by being a resource they can lean on and count on, for the expertise for tooling will always remain important to Wyko’s success.
“We ultimately want our customers to use us as a resource and allow our engineers to do the heavy lifting, lean on our experience of understanding and decades of successful innovation, and understand how we can bring value to organizations and partnerships,” McCleery said. “Sometimes it is what a company’s technology is not doing that we can help with, and that can make a big difference.”
Founded in England in 1962, Wyko debuted as a manufacturer of high-quality engineered parts and the distribution of bearings. Soon after, this expertise became focused on tire tooling. Wyko has become a global leader in the supply of highly engineered products, primarily for the tire and rubber industries.
In 2009, Wyko was acquired by Greenback-based Davian Enterprises L.L.C. In 2011, Wyko became a part of Mesnac. Today, Wyko’s primary manufacturing location remains in Greenback, along with engineering, service and sales for North and South America. The Dudley location serves the Europe, Middle East and Asia markets with sales, engineering and service.

Agreement Signed Between City Of Weyburn And SHA – DiscoverWeyburn.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/agreement-signed-between-city-of-weyburn-and-sha-discoverweyburn-com/
The City of Weyburn and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) recently signed a five-year agreement, outlining the details of a rehabilitation program at the Credit Union Spark Centre.
The City will help facilitate the SHA’s Chronic Disease Management – Quality Improvement Program.
“This new partnership is exciting for the City of Weyburn,” Andrew Crowe, director of Leisure Services said. “Providing a space to improve the health and well-being of the community is a priority for the Leisure Services department. The Credit Union Spark Centre is a wonderful asset to the community, and this partnership is another example of how the new facility will benefit the various demographics within our community and surrounding area.”
Representatives from the SHA were at the Spark Centre yesterday to talk about the new program.
Dana Renwick, a Nurse Educator with Primary Healthcare said since partnering with the City they have revamped the chronic disease programming that they had before.
“Now we’re calling it all Healthy Living Program, and the first program we started with is cardiac rehabilitation,” she said. “We get a referral out of Regina, someone may have had a heart attack or some sort of heart event and then we book them in with our program and they have a one-on-one with me and I would provide education and just kind of clear them for exercise and things like that.”
“Saskatchewan Health Authority is dedicated to providing team-based primary care through our health networks to improve the health of Saskatchewan people,” Trevor Tessier, director of Primary Health Care for Weyburn Primary Health Services said. “We’re grateful to collaborate with the City of Weyburn to deliver this work.”
Tessier added the sessions focus on mental health and stress management associated with living with a chronic disease.
“The intent of the Healthy Living Program and what we do is to empower the participants within, so they have the tools to deal with their chronic disease.”
The pre-registered clients are elderly patients or have chronic conditions.
The agreement allows these participants to use the Credit Union Spark Centre as a safe space where they can exercise with their healthcare team encouraging them by their side.
A $7,500 recumbent fitness trainer was purchased through the collaboration. The Weyburn Credit Union Community Fund provided $5,000, and the Grow Your Community Grant from the South East Sport, Culture and Recreation District gave $1,000. Anyone can use the fitness trainer, which is located on the second floor of the Credit Union Spark Centre.
Facilitators of the chronic disease management program can utilize the centre’s multi-purpose room, first aid room, mini gym, and exercise track.

PUKALANI — On senior night in a packed Kaulaheanuiokamoku Gym, the Kamehameha Schools Maui girls volleyball team came up with its best match of the season when it needed it most.
The Warriors rolled to a convincing 25-14, 25-27, 25-16, 25-17 win over Maui High on Thursday night to clinch the No. 2 seed for next week’s Maui Interscholastic League Division I tournament at King Kekaulike Gym.
The Warriors finished the regular season 8-4, while the Sabers finished 7-5. The two will meet in a crucial semifinal of the MIL D-I tournament on Tuesday.
By securing the No. 2 seed, the Warriors could clinch a state tournament spot with a win Tuesday.
“We were very conscious of it, we knew of it and were pushing hard this week in practice to get this win for us and I’m really happy, I’m really appreciative of my team and how hard they’ve been working,” Kamehameha Maui senior Hiilei Fuqua said of the importance of the match after collecting 14 kills, three aces and two digs.
Maui High’s Lexi Kitagawa goes up for a kill during the first set Thursday.
After Kamehameha Maui’s Mahie Dean fired an ace to finish the first set, the Warriors bounded out to a 7-4 lead in the second set.
The Sabers fought back to take a 13-9 lead after a hitting error on the Warriors, but a solo block by Kamehameha’s Haven De Silva stopped the 9-2 run for a moment. A kill by Fuqua made it 17-11, but a kill off the block by Kealohilani Denisi gave the Sabers an 18-11 lead.
The Warriors climbed within 20-17 on a net violation by Maui High, and an ace by Fuqua made it 20-18.
Maui High’s Lexi Kitagawa smoked a crosscourt kill and Jezziel Altura served an ace to push the lead to 22-18. Kamehameha Maui’s Archer Fabrao just reached a ball that trickled over before two errors on Maui High made it 22-21.
Maui High’s Cadence Gumanas won a joust at the net and Fabrao slammed home a deep kill to make it 23-22. A kill by Leilani Gates made it 24-23 and then Gates won a joust to tie it 24-24.
Kamehameha Maui’s Archer Fabrao blocks a first-set shot by Maui High’s Bea Dalit. Also on the block is the Warriors’ Haven De Silva.
A kill by Gumanas gave the Sabers a 25-24 lead, but De Silva smacked home a quick set to tie it again. A Kamehameha Maui service error gave the Sabers their third set point, and a well-placed bump kill by Shylah Pulu-Valdez, just up from the junior varsity squad, ended it.
The Warriors fought back in the third set, using a 7-0 run on the serve of Haylee Pruse to open a 14-10 lead. The Sabers climbed within 17-16 after a hitting error, but an ace by Fuqua pushed the lead to 20-16 and she finished the set on an 7-0 run from the service line.
Fuqua slammed home a crosscourt kill to give the Warriors a 9-7 lead in the fourth set, and later she made it 14-11 Warriors with another kill.
Fuqua sent a bump deep into the corner to make it 18-14, and the Warriors finished the victory with a 7-3 run.
Dean finished with six digs and four aces, and Pruse dished out 20 assists to go along with five digs for the Warriors. Fabrao had six digs and five kills, while Emmi-Lin Felten had 15 assists and six aces.
“We do have a lot of work, but just like every other team we will keep working on it,” Fuqua said. “We’ll continue to do our jobs and go at it.”
Pruse said finding Fuqua was a key.
“It’s always awesome to have an on-hitter on the outside and each of our players, they did their job, they knew where they were going, they played smart,” Pruse said. “Hiilei was definitely a big part of that.”
Pruse said the crowd was special.
“It was awesome, it was just like being back before COVID,” she said.
KSM coach Evan Jenkins knew what was on the line. If regular-season champion Baldwin wins its semifinal Tuesday evening, the Warriors can clinch the program’s 19th straight trip to the state tournament with a win over Maui High in the night’s second semifinal.
“I think we’ve just been focusing on our passing and all those fundamentals that just kind of brought it together tonight to have a stronger start and strong finish, so it’s that time of year where we’re just trying to make everything work,” Jenkins said. “Good fun, good to have the crowd, get all the seniors playing tonight, so they all had their hits and their plays, so it was good.”
Denisi had nine kills and Kiera Sam Fong had six for the Sabers.
Maui High coach Kenny Houpo declined comment after the match.

Welcome To ‘This Week In The Metaverse’ – Fortune https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/welcome-to-this-week-in-the-metaverse-fortune/
Welcome to This Week in the Metaverse, where Fortune rounds up the week’s most interesting stories about NFTs, culture, Web3-based gaming, and, well, the metaverse. Email marco.quiroz-gutierrez@fortune.com with tips.
For our inaugural edition, let’s begin by taking a closer look at Horizon’s ambition for blockchain gaming.
It’s a rough time for the crypto markets as even famously bullish VCs are pulling back, with global funding for venture capital-backed crypto startups falling 50% from the second quarter to the third. But one bright spot is Horizon Blockchain Games, the Toronto-based Web3 products and infrastructure company that this week raised $40 million in a round led by Brevan Howard Digital and Morgan Creek Digital.
CEO Peter Kieltyka declined to reveal Horizon’s valuation following the funding, but he told me that the money will be used to grow his 60-member team, especially in the marketing and business development departments.
“To be taken seriously, you need the funds so you can hire the best, so you can do the work,” Kieltyka said.
The company will need the extra hands for its plans to expand Sequence, its Web3 developer platform that’s the basis for its main product, the trading card blockchain game Skyweaver.
“It’s really an engine for allowing a new set of digital-good primitives, and allowing them to be easily integrated into your video game,” Kieltyka added.
The Sequence platform also includes Sequence Wallet, a non-custodial wallet built for Web3 games that has a social sign-on—think Google or Apple or Facebook—to help onboard crypto newbies. Using smart contracts, the wallet also allows users to easily make transactions across chains using a stablecoin like USDC.
One of Horizon’s lead investors, Brevin Howard, thinks Horizon has the potential to make an outsized impact on the blockchain gaming space. It called Horizon the “web3 Epic Games + Google,” and Kieltyka the “Tim Sweeney of Web3” in a blog post this week, drawing a parallel between Horizon’s Sequence platform and Epic’s Unreal Engine, which Sweeney, the Epic Games CEO, says is the underlying tech for nearly half of all upcoming console games.
Kieltyka himself didn’t exactly shun the comparison—“I got 15 more years before I’m there,” he told me—although he did say he wants Sequence’s platform to remain open source on some level. Still, he said he envisions launching a Sequence Pro model for companies that could work as a software-as-a-service system.
Are NFT sales primed to rebound?
Monthly NFT sales jumped above $947 million, Decrypt reported, in a rare sign of life for a market that’s been cratering. But things may not be as bad as they seem. DappRadar Head of Research Pedro Herrera told me that although, yes, volumes have dropped, the number of transactions and the number of trades remained consistent at about 2 million from the second to third quarter.

Cool Cats Group got an undisclosed investment from Animoca Brands, building on its gaming partnership. The company said the investment “will drive Cool Cats’ mission to become the largest global NFT brand and a robust media and content company, including through expansion of its gaming offerings.”
Steve Young, the former NFL quarterback who won the Super Bowl in 1995, is planning to take public his metaverse-related company, Movella, via a SPAC. The company specializes in sensors, software, and analytics that enable the digitization of movement, according to a regulatory filing.
Improbable, the British virtual-world technology creator that worked on Bored Ape Yacht Club’s Otherside metaverse, is closing in on another $100 million round from blockchain tech company Elrond that would value the company at $3 billion, according to the Financial Times. Although the company raised $500 million in the biggest-ever funding round for a British startup at the time, in 2017, it’s burned through nearly all of the money it raised since launching in 2012.
Three times as many NFT trademarks have been filed this year compared to 2021, according to data from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office compiled by trademark attorney Mike Kondoudis. This means that more companies are securing their intellectual property for possible Web3 products, although it doesn’t necessarily mean they’ll launch them.

This Pregnant Mom Accidentally Let Her Toddler Watch Her IPad All Night & Reddit Gave Her The Sweetest Encouragement – Yahoo Life https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/this-pregnant-mom-accidentally-let-her-toddler-watch-her-ipad-all-night-reddit-gave-her-the-sweetest-encouragement-yahoo-life/
All moms mess up sometimes, and I’ll be the first to admit it. I’ve yelled at my kids in moments of sheer frustration, forgotten to attend an event for my Kindergartner, bribed my kids with candy and screen time — it happens. One mom on Reddit recently shared a parenting mistake she made with her toddler, and our hearts go out to her. It’s so hard to try to be a perfect mom all the time!
In the Parenting subreddit, a mom shared her story of how she “messed up so bad” last night.

A Woman Who Fell Into Default ‘Mom Duties’ With Her Partner & His Kid is Asking Reddit if She Made the Right Move
“I’m 13 weeks pregnant and last night I was so tired I crawled into bed with my 3-year-old and told her we could watch a show on the iPad for bit,” the mom wrote. “We started watching PJ Masks and i fell asleep. Woke up at 5 am and she was still awake and still watching the iPad.”
Yikes! Her toddler probably thought she hit the jackpot — hours of unmonitored, uninterrupted screen time! What kid wouldn’t stay up all night to soak it up?
Click here to read the full article.
“I can’t believe it. Today is going to f*ck with her sleep schedule so bad. Ugh,” the mom added.
The mom probably felt awful when she woke up and saw her toddler still awake, so she wrote this quick post as a way to vent. Little did she know, Reddit would come through with the most surprisingly helpful words of encouragement.
“If that’s your worst mess up, you’re doing great!” one person wrote, before offering some helpful advice. “Put the iPad/show on a timer next time if you’re able so if the kiddo is still awake when the show turns off they will either go to bed or wake you up and you can decide what to do next. :)”
What a compassionate, helpful comment. We understand needing to turn to the iPad to help your toddler fall asleep (pregnancy exhaustion on top of regular mom exhaustion is so, so hard!), and this person offered a creative solution that would help monitor screen time and let the mom get some rest. We love to see it!
Others were nice in their suggestions too. “Or set a nightly alarm for all your devices twenty minutes before her bedtime,” one person wrote. “Best case scenario you just swipe it away, worst case scenario you are saved from any extended snuggle naps.”
Another suggested “turning the brightness down all the way” and putting the sound on mute to put kids to sleep. Someone else found “on Netflix you can also make it go super slow, I set ours to half speed on Cocomelon. Everything is basically a lullaby.” Genius!
Other sympathetic parents shared their experiences with iPad use during pregnancy. “My second pregnancy was so brutal – nonstop nausea and puking and severe pelvic floor pain during a heatwave,” one mom wrote. “I spent a lot of afternoons sleeping on my bed while my four-year-old watched Paw Patrol on his iPad. I felt like an absolute garbage mom. He later told me he had the best summer ever because we got to snuggle and watch tv together on the bed. You’re doing your best and your kiddo totally fell asleep at one point. Good luck! You’ve got this.”
Others agreed that it’s likely the 3-year-old did get some sleep throughout the night. “Nah, a 3-year-old would eventually crash,” one person wrote. “When my kids were that age they’d fall asleep in the weirdest places and poses because they’d just crash. I highly doubt a 3-year-old could pull an all nighter.”
“100% she just woke up before you, that’s all,” someone else said. “Even if she hadn’t, this is one night, one time. Kid was always safe and happy. Could have been a lot worse.”
At the end of the day, parents are all just doing the best we can, and one TV night (even if it’s all night!) won’t change anything. “Oh honey. Lol, she will be fine. Just bump up nap time a little then get her to run herself out afterwards,” one person wrote. “Give yourself a break, you’re pregnant and tired I’m sure. This isn’t a f*ck up, it’s ok. One night shouldn’t mess up her schedule.”
Someone else wrote, “You are doing just fine as a parent. She is going to remember it as the best night of her life spent with her cool momma who let her watch PJ Masks ALL night! Trust me, it’s going to be a story she tells for many years … You are doing great Momma!”
In the wise words of Hannah Montana, “Everybody makes mistakes. Everybody has those days.” It’s going to be OK!

Cardano Price Prediction Can ADA 10x By 2023? Cryptonews
Cardano Price Prediction – Can ADA 10x By 2023? – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/cardano-price-prediction-can-ada-10x-by-2023-cryptonews/
Cardano appears set to make a bullish run in the coming months with several high-profile crypto commentators picking ADA as a coin to watch in recent days.
Founder Charles Hoskinson has also promised there is a huge appetite from institutional investors with the blockchain set to welcome hundreds of new projects to their ecosystem after the successful Vasil hard fork upgrade.
But can Cardano, long considered an undervalued crypto coin without ever truly breaking out, finally make huge returns on its great promise?
Cardano Loved by Crypto Analysts
Two videos emerged this week from highly influential crypto analysts that both spoke at length about the strengths of Cardano and native token ADA.
Dan Gambardello, who goes by Crypto Capital Venture and has more than 325,000 YouTube subscribers, claimed in a video that ADA could reach a $500 billion market cap in the next bull run.
Although it is not clear when the next bull run will start, a market cap of that size would give ADA a trading price of $15 – an increase of nearly 3,500% from today’s trading price of $0.42.
Gambardello’s analysis is based not only on the success of the Vasil hard fork but two more crucial updates planned in the near future – Basho, and Voltaire.
It is not yet clear when the two updates will take place, but Basho promises to improve transaction speed and Voltaire to introduce voting for network participants.
The upgrade will allow Cardano to process millions of transactions every second – for context, Ethereum can manage 10,000 TPS after the Merge – while Voltaire will make Cardano self-sustainable.
CoinBureau host Guy, who has more than 2.1 million subscribers on YouTube, echoed Gambardello’s bullish sentiment on ADA – although didn’t go quite so far as to predict a price of $15.
During a discussion with Benjamin Cowen, the pseudonymous talked up ADA naming it – and Algorand (ALGO) as coins to look out for in the next bull run.
“Long-term trend-wise, I think investors — particularly institutional investors, which is obviously where Cardano is lacking in that respect — but I think any investor will look at the likes of Ethereum and Cardano in the aftermath, when interest in crypto returns, and go, ‘Well, these guys were able to execute these big upgrades, and they went flawlessly.’
And I think that is a testament to the caliber of people working on those projects, and that I think will be a big part of peoples’ due diligence in the future. So although the price hasn’t done anything, I think it’s really, really positive, for Cardano especially.”
Cardano Founder Promises Institutional Investment
Outspoken Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson has also doubled down on his claims that the blockchain will be a favorite for institutional investors when the bull market returns.
ADA has endured a poor 12 months and is down more than 85% from its September 2021 all-time high of $3.09.
However, Hoskinson remains bullish on what he and his team have been building in the last year, despite many cryptos struggling during a bear market.
We built Cardano to be the financial operating system of the world. We built it to bank the unbanked. We built it as a community to give economic identity to those who don’t have it so we can have one global fair marketplace.
Cardano remains one of the most important blockchains outside of the western world, especially in Africa where many projects use the blockchain for their projects.
Hoskinson also claims that many hundreds of projects are ready and waiting to build on Cardano.
He expects institutional and venture capitalist funds to come into Cardano in 2024 and 2025.
You don’t capture anything during the bull market, but during the bear market, everybody’s collapsing. All the bridges are getting hacked. All these DeFi (decentralized finance) Ponzi schemes fall apart that we keep saying are problems.
So that’s the community we built and the ecosystem we built. Now we are enjoying the dividends of that approach.
Cardano Price Prediction
While it’s difficult to accurately predict the fortunes of any crypto company, Cardano has the underlying fundamental qualities to become one of the premier blockchains in the space.
Cardano has long promised investors to become one of the very top altcoins on the market and has never quite got there – despite strong performance in 2021.
However, the project has continued to build and find investors during the bear market and, when the bull market returns, is a project that appears set for break-out gains.
A 10x gain, to around $4.20, is not too difficult to imagine should the market make a big recovery.
Diversification in any portfolio is also key and another green-focused project, like Cardano, is IMPT, which wants to make the carbon credit tradeable for everyone to help ease the climate crisis.
The project has just launched its presale and has raised more than $1.5 million in the first four days.
U.S. Imposes Foreign Direct Product Rule On China For AI And Supercomputing The Washington Post
U.S. Imposes Foreign Direct Product Rule On China For AI And Supercomputing – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/u-s-imposes-foreign-direct-product-rule-on-china-for-ai-and-supercomputing-the-washington-post/
The Biden administration on Friday announced its most aggressive measures to date aimed at limiting China’s access to advanced computer chips and chip-making equipment, saying that the technology is supporting China’s military modernization and even its development of weapons of mass destruction.
The administration said it was focusing solely on the chips, activities and entities of “greatest national security concern” in China to minimize harm to the American chip industry — foundational to the U.S. economy — and disruptions to the global supply chain.
The move represents a clear flexing of U.S. muscle in its strategic competition with China, with analysts saying it amounts to a new strategy of high-tech containment.
But officials also acknowledged the effort could backfire without buy-in from foreign partners and allies.
“We recognize that the unilateral controls we’re putting into place tomorrow will lose effectiveness over time if other countries don’t join us, and we risk harming U.S. technology leadership if foreign competitors are not subject to similar controls,” said a senior administration official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the rules with reporters.
National security adviser Jake Sullivan last month said the administration was seeking to shed the old approach of maintaining a “relative” advantage in key technologies to blowing open “as large of a lead as possible.”
The export controls imposed on Russia by the United States and 37 other countries earlier this year showed such tools can do more than just prevent gains, Sullivan said. “They can be a new strategic asset in the U.S. and allied tool kit to impose costs on adversaries, and even over time degrade their battlefield capabilities,” he said in a speech at a global technologies summit.
But that collective effort’s success only underscores the need for similar support from allies with this action, said William Reinsch, a senior Commerce official in the Clinton administration now at the Center for Strategic and International Security.
“This won’t work unless the affected governments and companies are willing to cooperate,” said Reinsch. “You’re always walking a fine line between controlling too much and too little. If you control too much, then you’re kneecapping your own guys — their ability to invest in new technologies.”
The rules were released by the Commerce Department Friday.
The Semiconductor Industry Association, which represents nearly all of the U.S. semiconductor industry by revenue and almost two-thirds of non-U. S. chip firms, said in a statement it was “assessing the [rules’] impact” and would work with members to ensure compliance.
“We understand the goal of ensuring national security and urge the U.S. government to implement the rules in a targeted way — and in collaboration with international partners — to help level the playing field and mitigate unintended harm to U.S. innovation,” the statement said.
Some critics say the Commerce Department has been too timid in using its authorities to curb the Chinese government’s efforts to harness industry to aid its massive military buildup, out of deference to American industry. “This should have been done a year ago,” said one former U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the matter’s sensitivity.
The administration official defended Commerce’s approach. “There’s no balancing national security with commercial interests,” the official said. “We respond to national security threats.”
Among the new measures, the administration is deploying a draconian trade rule that has global sweep, aimed at stopping chipmakers not just in the United States but overseas from supplying advanced chips to China for use in artificial intelligence, supercomputers, and supercomputing related activities.
Use of the foreign direct product rule will prevent companies anywhere in the world from selling advanced chips to Chinese firms or organizations engaged in AI and supercomputing activities without a U.S. government license if the companies use American technology to make the chips, as nearly every semiconductor company globally does.
The administration is also taking steps to try to slow China’s ability to produce its own high-end chips. For now, China still lags behind Taiwan, South Korea and the United States. These controls would essentially bar exports of American-made tools needed for high-end chip production in China, and of U.S. tools or components to Chinese factories capable of making chips above or below a certain threshold.
Most of these thresholds are two to three generations behind state-of-the-art chip technology, but reflect where China is today, experts said.
Commerce will also be barring “U.S. persons” — including American factories, and Americans who work in foreign factories overseas — from providing support without a license to the development or production of such chips for China.
“My north star at [the Commerce’s Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security, which enforces export controls] is to ensure that we are appropriately doing everything in our power to protect our national security and prevent sensitive technologies with military applications from being acquired by the People’s Republic of China’s military, intelligence, and security services,” said undersecretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Alan Estevez in a statement Friday.
The technologies fueled by these chips also are used for mass surveillance and to enable human rights abuses, senior administration officials said.
Beijing, for its part, has railed against the Biden administration’s efforts to limit access to chip technology, accusing the United States of wielding trade rules to suppress Chinese development. Washington “weaponizes tech and trade issues … in an attempt to monopolize the world’s advanced technologies,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin last month following a U.S. decision to restrict high end sales of Nvidia chips to China.

Tech Savvy: Holiday Shopping Deals Are Here — And Early – Brainerd Dispatch https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/tech-savvy-holiday-shopping-deals-are-here-and-early-brainerd-dispatch/
The National Retail Federation surveyed 2,000 customers in late September finding 62% of shoppers agreed spending on holiday gifts and celebrations was important and they would cut back in other areas “so their loved ones can celebrate like they always do.”

BRAINERD — Christmas in July is certainly a thing, just watch Hallmark, but Christmas in October?
This year, October has a definite holiday feel and it isn’t because of the approaching Halloween. Instead, this week offers early sales with retailers touting fall events as a way to get an early start on holiday shopping, entertaining and baking.
“Retailers are responding to consumer demand by starting deals and promotions for winter holiday merchandise earlier in the year,” the National Retail Federation reported this fall. “That also allows consumers to spread out their budget over a longer period of time and search for the best deal for their holiday purchases.
“This year, retailers moved up their peak shipping season to allow for additional time to bring in products for the winter holiday season. According to NRF’s latest consumer survey, 44% of holiday shoppers say it’s better to purchase gifts and other seasonal items now because they believe inflation will continue to impact prices later in the year. Another 31% believe it’s best to purchase items now because the deals won’t get any better.”
The National Retail Federation reported consumer behavior has shifted “with consumers preferring to spread their shopping out over the entire season.”
“Retailers adjust their promotion strategies and marketing calendars to meet consumer demand,” the federation reported. “For many, that could mean launching holiday sales early or understanding that promotions and sales might be even more important to consumers this year, in light of inflation and higher cost of living.”
Holiday sales are underway
Amazon’s Prime Early Access Sale, included with the Prime membership, is offering two days of holiday deals Tuesday, Oct. 11, and Wednesday. Amazon lists the event as two days of holiday deals with notables of gifts for all ages, deals on movies and TV, as the company notes exclusives, discounts on a host of items from cereal to TV wall mounts and clothing, along with benefits of membership. TechCrunch reported this is the first time Amazon is having two sales events just for Prime members in the same year.
Walmart has its own version with deals starting Monday through Thursday. Walmart will have a “Rollbacks and More” sale on a host of products.
Target already started its deal days Thursday, Oct. 6, which continue through Saturday. The retailer reports the Target Deal Days event represents “the earliest access ever to deep holiday deals on must-have items and everyday essentials.”
Shoppers won’t have to worry they are missing out on a better deal if they choose to shop early with retailers instituting price match guarantees.
Target listed the three days of sales as early Black Friday deals and included a holiday price match guarantee to match the price if it goes lower anytime between now and Dec. 24. So hang on to those receipts and price adjustments can be made at the store or by calling guest services for online purchases.
“Throughout the season, guests will discover new and differentiated items for gifting and gathering, including only-at-Target owned brands and must-have national brands, and they can expect great deals and everyday low prices at every turn for an unmatched holiday shopping experience,” said Christina Hennington, executive vice president and chief growth officer, Target.
Kohl’s is also in the mix with Kohl’s Cash and shopping discounts creating savings for shoppers or expanding their buying power.
“As shoppers prepare their holiday lists earlier than ever this year with value top of mind, they can count on Kohl’s for unmatched savings on top gifts across all categories, all season long,” Kohl’s reported, noting sale items or offers will be listed every day from Oct. 6 through Christmas Day with “more opportunities than ever to earn and redeem Kohl’s Cash and NEW every day earn from Cyber Monday through Christmas Eve, and, this is the first holiday season Kohl’s Reward members nationwide earn 7.5% Kohl’s Rewards on every purchase when using a Kohl’s Card.”
Last year, supply shortages had consumers looking to get online orders and in-person shopping done earlier. This year, the retailers are kicking off holiday sales earlier and there are expectations more people will want to get back to a pre-pandemic experience as well.
In a September news release, Walmart stated it will be offering “better value and more convenience than ever as customers start their holiday shopping.” Walmart reported customers start their holiday shopping research in October and the retailer announced “price investments for even deeper savings, three new and expanded returns options, a broader assortment with more top gifts, a new community giving platform and an enhanced omnichannel shopping experience to deliver for its customers all season long.”
Tom Ward, executive vice president and chief eCommerce officer, Walmart U.S., stated, “We listened to our customers, and the way we’re approaching holiday this year underscores our commitment to making holiday shopping easier, affordable and more enjoyable.”
Walmart reports it will be providing customers with deeper savings across a broader assortment of gifts. The three new and expanded returns options the company announced include extended holiday return windows from Oct. 1 through Jan. 31, 2023. Customers will be able to return items curbside from their vehicles. And Walmart+ members in select stores will have the option of having returns picked up at their doorsteps by handing the return to a delivery driver.
Walmart also introduced its Spark Good program to support community giving. Spark Good Round-Up means customers can round-up their purchase total and donate to their charity of choice when shopping online — year-round. The Spark Good Registry provides the option for nonprofits to create a registry of items they need, not unlike a wedding or baby registry, Walmart noted.
“An impact dashboard will allow customers to see how Walmart and others in their community are supporting their favorite charities,” Walmart reported.
As for its “omnichannel shopping experience” Walmart is referring to efforts it states make the online shopping experience better and more personal, with a virtual try-on and “View in Your Home” option, such as other sellers offer like Home Depot’s “See this in my room” visualization to see how a new product, even flooring, would fit into one’s home before it’s purchased.
The National Retail Federation surveyed 2,000 customers in late September finding 62% of shoppers agreed spending on holiday gifts and celebrations was important and they would cut back in other areas “so their loved ones can celebrate like they always do.”
“However, 43% of consumers say they don’t earn enough to cover the costs of gifts and other holiday items this year,” the federation stated, noting 40% are looking at dipping into savings, 32% are looking at taking on credit card debt, 25% are using services like buy now, pay later or selling things to gain income.
Walmart reported it is hiring 40,000 employees for seasonal and part-time roles through the holidays. Target reported it is hiring up to 100,000 holiday workers. Kohl’s is hiring thousands of associates at its stores for the holiday season.
With retailers looking to add seasonal jobs to help through the holiday season, the federation noted the labor market is robust but still not “close to normal” considering pre-pandemic times.
“Retail added 44,000 jobs in August and employment in August was the highest number we’ve seen in the last five years. Retail employment has increased more than 800,000 in the last two years and is up more than 2.5 million since the peak of the pandemic.
“Retailers and delivery companies are preparing for a peak shopping season by hiring seasonal workers and offering thousands of jobs.”

Texas Handgun License issued by DPS
United States Military Identification Card containing the person’s photograph

Your ID may be expired no more than four years unless you’re 70 years old, and then the acceptable form of ID can be expired for any length of time.
If a voter has one of the acceptable forms of IDs but forgets to bring it to the polling place, the voter can vote provisionally. That voter will then have six days to present a photo ID to the county voter registrar or fill out a natural disaster affidavit, or the vote will not count.
If you do not have one of the acceptable forms of ID and cannot reasonably obtain one, you can fill out a Reasonable Impediment Declaration at your place of voting and must show one of the following supporting forms of ID:

Voters with a disability may apply with the county voter registrar for a permanent exemption to the photo ID requirement.
How do I vote?
Texas uses three methods to vote: (The following information comes directly from the Secretary of State’s office.)
Paper ballots are still used as the primary way of voting in a number of Texas counties. Voters mark their ballot by hand with an indelible marker (a marker that cannot be erased) or pen and place their finished ballot in a ballot box. Local election officials then count the votes by hand.
Optical scan voting systems enable voters to mark their choices on preprinted ballots by either connecting “arrows” or filling in “bubbles” next to the candidates’ names. The paper ballot is then inserted into an electronic ballot counter, which then counts the marked “bubbles” or “arrows” on each ballot and automatically computes the totals for each candidate and/or issue.
DREs (Direct Record Electronic systems) enable voters to record their choices electronically directly into the machine. There are several types of DREs (some have a dial while others use a touch screen), but essentially they all enable voters to move back and forth between screens (ballot pages) to select the candidates and/or issues for whom they wish to vote. Once a voter has made his or her choices, the DRE provides a summary screen that presents those choices and gives the voter the ability to go back and make any changes before pressing the “Vote” or “Cast Ballot” button. One of the benefits of a DRE system is that it prevents “over-voting”; that is, it stops the voter from selecting two candidates or options in a race where only one is allowed. As well, a DRE gives the voter an opportunity to correct “under-voting,” or failing to select any candidate or option in a race.
Each voting location must offer at least one accessible voting system that enables the blind, elderly, physically disabled, and non-reading Texans to vote independently and in private.
Click here and scroll to the bottom of the page to see which system your county uses and get step-by-step voting instructions.
Who can vote by mail?
U.S. Armed Forces and Merchant Marines, their dependents and U.S. citizens who live abroad can vote early by mail. For more information, visit the Federal Voting Assistance Program website.
Mail/absentee ballot voting is also available to elderly voters and voters with physical disabilities. You may be eligible to vote by mail if you are:
Going to be away from your county on Election Day and during early voting.
Out-of-state college students who still claim a Texas address as their primary residence.
65 years of age or older on Election Day.
Absentee/mail-in ballots must be received by 7 p.m. on Election Day. Ballots from overseas voters must be received by the fifth day after Election Day. Ballots from members of the armed forces must be received by t...

Cancun International Airport To Introduce Electronic Migration Checks For American Travelers – The Cancun Sun https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/cancun-international-airport-to-introduce-electronic-migration-checks-for-american-travelers-the-cancun-sun/
Last Updated 1 second ago
Airport officials have announced the implementation of new automated passport machines for American and Canadian travelers in Cancun International Airport starting this winter. The bureaucracy-cutting measure is expected to significantly speed up entry into the country during peak travel times.
The new migration procedure, called e-Gate, is being trialed at Cancun and Mexico City, which see the highest passenger numbers in the country. The introduction of the new electronic migration protocol comes on the heels of the removal of the mandatory FMM form, which was scrapped in August. Together, the recent changes will make it easier and faster than ever before to gain entry to Cancun.
Roberto González López, a spokesperson for the National Institution for Migration (INM) in Quintana Roo, revealed details about the new e-Gate system in a recent press conference. “In introducing the new controls, Cancun airport will be among the most important airports in the world to use the technology to facilitate migratory checks for millions of tourists by using the highest security standards,” the official went on to say.
Work has already begun on installing the new electronic gates in both Cancun and Mexico City airports. The state-of-the-art kiosks use optical readers to scan passports in a matter of seconds, gathering and processing passenger data. Once complete, the new procedure will substitute migration forms that passengers previously had to fill out upon entering the country.
The automated process will take around 30 seconds from start to end. To use the e-Gate, arriving passengers must first scan their passports and boarding cards at the automated passport gate. After a successful reading, travelers will pass through the electronic gate, where a picture and biometric data are taken. After gathering all the legally required information, passengers’ data is checked on international databases, and if everything is in order, they are granted access to the country.
Initially, only American and Canadian travelers will be able to benefit from the new e-Gate system. The two nationalities make up the overwhelming majority of international travelers to the area, and the system is specifically designed to cope with record travel demand.
Officials say the introduction of the e-Gate system will help the airport to handle growing passenger numbers, even during low season. But the largest benefit will be felt during peak travel periods, such as Easter, as well as the winter vacation season. Large international events, such as concerts or trade shows that attract thousands of visitors at a time will also gain from simplified migratory checks.
Over 25 million visitors are expected to fly through Cancun International Airport this year, and authorities remain hopeful a new all-time record will be set. The Mexican Caribbean state of Quintana Roo welcomes up to 41% of all international arrivals in the country, prompting authorities to tackle hour-long lines and red tape. The airport handles up to 600 flights during the busiest days, during which large lines can form at immigration and customs.
Over the course of the year, authorities have taken several steps to facilitate the entry of U.S. and Canadian travelers. Americans account for the vast majority of all travelers to the state and remain the main source of income for the tourism industry. In August, officials scrapped the mandatory FMM arrival form, granting U.S tourists fast-track entry into the country.
With Cancun International Airport facing staffing issues in addition to growing passenger numbers, authorities are keen on streamlining the entry process as much as possible. This week, new electronic check-in kiosks were also added to Cancun airport’s Terminal 2, further helping alleviate congestion at the busy terminal.

Former Country Cupboard To Launch Food Truck In Lewisburg – NorthcentralPA.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/former-country-cupboard-to-launch-food-truck-in-lewisburg-northcentralpa-com/
Lewisburg, Pa. — A former popular Lewisburg restaurant is coming back as a food truck.
On Thursday, Oct. 6, the former owners of the Country Cupboard announced via Facebook the Country Cupboard Express food truck will begin serving some of the restaurant’s favorite meals.
The food truck will be located at the parking lot of the Best Western Country Cupboard Inn and will operate from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays, beginning on Oct. 19.
Items served will include macaroni and cheese, baked limas, creamed cabbage, baked corn, hamburger BBQ, chicken salad, and beef vegetable soup. All items will be baked and served cold. The meals will be sold in pint and quart containers. No hot items will be available,
The announcement comes days after Evangelical Community Hospital announced the former building off Route 15 will be demolished starting Oct. 11. An assessment determined the aging structure would require substantial improvements. Evangelical has not yet announced plans for what the site will be used for.
In May, Evangelical bought the 77,000 square-foot building. The Country Cupboard Restaurant and Shops had closed on Feb. 19, 2022 after almost 50 years in business. The owners cited multiple reasons for the decisions to close, including rising food prices, difficulty hiring staff, and affects from the pandemic restrictions.

How Duff Goldman Keeps Life On The Road Nutritious Mashed
How Duff Goldman Keeps Life On The Road Nutritious – Mashed https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/how-duff-goldman-keeps-life-on-the-road-nutritious-mashed/

Fans of bakery owner and television personality Duff Goldman likely follow his main Instagram account, where he shares all kinds of personal moments, from snaps of his adorable daughter Josephine to pictures behind-the-scenes of his television projects to, of course, plenty of delicious and seriously impressive cakes and baked goods. However, did you know that Goldman seeks to inspire others with his healthy living journey and created a second Instagram account earlier this year devoted to sharing it?
While Goldman’s primary account has a whopping 741,000 followers, his newer health and fitness has just shy of 4,000 as of this writing. The account name pays tribute to the culinary world, and though he added his first name to the bio, fans scrolling will simply see him posting as @beefcakecookie. On this account, Goldman shares photos and videos taken during his workouts, as well as some of the healthy meals he eats and other inspirational updates. As People reports, he’s shared his nutrition and fitness progress in the past as well.
Though it may be easy to stick to his routine while at home at his scenic California home, working out in the fresh air and creating nutritious meals in his kitchen, it’s always a challenge to keep up healthy habits on the road when faced with temptations and a busy schedule. Goldman addressed his secret for healthy eating on the road in a recent post and it’s simpler than you might think.
Goldman’s secret for staying healthy on the road
Duff Goldman shared an Instagram post that showcased a baking sheet with a row of grilled chicken breast and zucchini, as well as a mason jar that contained some type of salad. In the caption, he discussed the challenge of sticking to healthy eating while traveling, something that he has to do “very often” because of his various projects and work commitments.
While willpower is definitely needed to walk past the incredible aromas coming out of various restaurants, the secret to the celebrity baker’s success is simply meal prep. As he explained, he swears by Israeli salad because of how the lemon juice preserves the vegetables, as well as some grilled lean protein and vegetables. Goldman even shared his recipe for Israeli salad in case any fans following his health journey wanted to try it out themselves.
The meal prep solution is likely for shorter trips — the Charm City Cakes owner mentioned that the food keeps about 48 hours on the road. However, he seems to have thought through all the potential issues, even confirming that his meal-prepped items stay quite cool in his checked bag because of where it’s stored on the plane.
The comments section of the post was filled with encouragement, with many fans writing messages like, “you can do it Duff!” and reminding him of his motivation: One person commented, “You’re not eating healthy just for you; you’re doing it for your beautiful family!”
MLB DFS: Top DraftKings And FanDuel Daily Fantasy Baseball Picks Lineup Advice For Friday Oct. 7 2022 CBS Sports
MLB DFS: Top DraftKings And FanDuel Daily Fantasy Baseball Picks, Lineup Advice For Friday, Oct. 7, 2022 – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/mlb-dfs-top-draftkings-and-fanduel-daily-fantasy-baseball-picks-lineup-advice-for-friday-oct-7-2022-cbs-sports/
The Seattle Mariners‘ last appearance in the MLB playoffs came in 2001, when players like Ichiro, Bret Boone and Jay Buhner led the M’s to the ALCS. On Friday, they begin an AL Wild Card Series against the Toronto Blue Jays, who missed the postseason last year but were a wild card team in 2020. With strong hitters on both sides, which ones are the best fits for your MLB DFS lineups on Friday?
One player for Seattle that could be the top choice in the MLB DFS player pool is second baseman Adam Frazier, who comes into Game 1 on a six-game hitting streak. Meanwhile, Toronto shortstop Bo Bichette closed out the season on a tear, and over his last 15 starts he hit .361 with an .803 OPS. Before you make your MLB DFS picks for the Wild Card Series games on Friday, be sure to check out the MLB DFS advice, strategy and projections from SportsLine daily Fantasy expert Mike McClure.
McClure is a daily Fantasy pro who has won over $2 million in his career. And when it comes to daily Fantasy baseball, McClure is at his best. Recognized in the book “Fantasy Football (and Baseball) for Smart People: How to Turn Your Hobby into a Fortune” as a top MLB DFS player, McClure’s proprietary projection model simulates each game 10,000 times, taking factors such as matchups and recent results into account. This allows him to find the best values on every site.
On Wednesday, McClure highlighted Boston outfielder/designated hitter J.D. Martinez in his MLB DFS player pool on DraftKings and FanDuel. The result: Martinez hit two home runs and finished with four RBI in the Red Sox season finale to return 32 points on DraftKings and 44.4 points on FanDuel. Anybody that included him in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable day.
Now, as the 2022 MLB regular season winds down, McClure has locked in his top MLB daily Fantasy picks for Friday, October 7. Head to SportsLine now to see them.
McClure’s top MLB DFS picks for Friday, October 7, 2022
One of McClure’s top MLB DFS picks for Friday is Mets first baseman Pete Alonso, who is listed at $5,300 on DraftKings and $4,200 on FanDuel. In his final start of the regular season, Alonso went 2-for-3 against the Nationals. He ended the season in an offensive groove, where he batted .400 with six total hits and four walks over his final five starts.
The Mets begin their postseason against San Diego and will see Yu Darvish starting on the mound for the Padres. The series begins in New York, where Alonso has been a more efficient hitter than on the road. At Citi Field this season, Alonso’s batting average (.280) is 16 points higher than in away games, and overall, he has hit .300 with a 1.099 OPS with runners in scoring position.
Another part of McClure’s optimal MLB DFS strategy includes stacking Alonso with second baseman/outfielder Jeff McNeil ($4,300 on DraftKings and $2,800 on FanDuel). McNeil finished the regular season without a hit in New York’s season finale against Washington, but he had been on fire in the 10 games before that. During that stretch, he hit .465 with four extra-base hits, four RBI and a 1.151 OPS as he won the NL batting title.
Historically, McNeil hasn’t had a great deal of success against Darvish (1-for-11 all-time), but overall this season, he’s had great success against right-handed starting pitchers like Darvish. Against righty starters, McNeil hit 33 doubles, 47 RBI, and eight of his nine home runs. Darvish hasn’t pitched for fewer than six innings in a game since June, and McNeil’s offensive splits against starters escalate across the board with each trip to the batter’s box, starting with a baseline of .336/.376/.453.
How to set your MLB DFS lineups for Friday, October 7, 2022
McClure is also targeting an undervalued player who is set to explode for huge numbers on Friday. The stars are aligning for him to return tournament-winning value and he comes at a price that won’t break the bank. You can only see who it is here.
So what are the top MLB DFS picks for Friday? And which player is a must-roster? Visit SportsLine now to see DFS millionaire Mike McClure’s complete player pool and picks for FanDuel and DraftKings, and cash in big on MLB DFS.
Zuckerbergs Metaverse App Reportedly Has quality Problem Business Insider
Zuckerberg’s Metaverse App Reportedly Has ‘quality’ Problem – Business Insider https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/zuckerbergs-metaverse-app-reportedly-has-quality-problem-business-insider/
Memos from Meta’s VP of Metaverse to staff say the app has too many quality and performance issues.
One memo said the team building the metaverse app don’t spend enough time using it, The Verge reports.
Updates to the metaverse app are scheduled to be shared on October 11 at Meta’s Connect conference.

Internal memos from Meta’s VP of Metaverse to employees working on the metaverse app highlight concerns that it has too many quality and performance issues — and that even employees don’t seem very engaged with it.
The memos, obtained by The Verge’s Alex Heath, are written by Metaverse VP Vishal Shah. In them, he tells the team they will be in “quality lockdown” for the rest of the year so the issues can be fixed before more users get access to the app.
The memos paint a worrying picture for a core component of Zuckerberg’s big bet on the metaverse. The focus on improving the existing product over introducing new features is happening as the CEO grapples with a massive company pivot to the metaverse, a change that’s happening as Facebook faces a slowdown in its core advertising business and the departure of his top lieutenant, Sheryl Sandberg.
The app, called Horizon Worlds, was released on Meta’s Quest headset last December and is expected to have a mobile and desktop web version soon. The app lets people build avatars and interact with each other in a virtual reality world. In a shareholders meeting in May, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told shareholders the company’s metaverse project is expected to lose “significant” amounts of money for the next three to five years.
Horizon Worlds has ‘not found a product market fit’

Issues with Horizon World include a “confusing and frustrating” onboarding experience, Shah said in one memo, The Verge reports. He also told employees they were not being flexible enough and need to collaborate better.
Perhaps most telling, Shah writes that the app “has not found product market fit.”
Meta did not immediately provide comment on the memos when contacted by Insider ahead of publication.
In Shah’s memos to employees, he also asked why the team building the app wasn’t spending a lot of time on the app.
“Why don’t we love the product we’ve built so much that we use it all the time,” Shah wrote. “The simple truth is, if we don’t love it, how can we expect our users to love it?”
Another memo from Shah said Meta was planning to ensure managers make their teams use the app at least once a week.
“Everyone in this organization should make it their mission to fall in love with Horizon Worlds,” Shah said in the follow-up memo. “You can’t do that without using it.”
The overall quality and graphics of Horizon Worlds has been criticized before.
Zuckerberg was mocked online in August after he shared his Horizon Worlds avatar to users in France and Spain, the quality drawing comparisons to video game graphics from the 1990s. He made another post later in the week with a different avatar meant to showcase unreleased graphical improvements.
“The graphics in Horizon are capable of much more — even on headsets — and Horizon is improving very quickly,” Zuckerberg said after the backlash. He added that more updates to the app and avatar graphics would be shared at Meta’s annual Connect conference on October 11.
