Putin Confronted By Insider Over Ukraine War U.S. Intelligence Finds The Washington Post
Putin Confronted By Insider Over Ukraine War, U.S. Intelligence Finds – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/putin-confronted-by-insider-over-ukraine-war-u-s-intelligence-finds-the-washington-post/ A member of Vladimir Putin’s inner circle has voiced disagreement directly to the Russian president in recent weeks over his handling of the war in Ukraine, according to information obtained by U.S. intelligence. The criticism marks the clearest indication yet of turmoil within Russia’s leadership over the stewardship of a war that has gone disastrously wrong for Moscow, forcing Putin last month to order the mobilization of hundreds of thousands of troops in a desperate bid to reverse recent battlefield losses. The information was deemed significant enough that it was included in President Biden’s daily intelligence briefing and shared with other U.S. officials, according to people familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive intelligence. The discontent that the member of Putin’s inner circle expressed related to what the insider considered mismanagement of the war effort and mistakes being made by those executing the military campaign, according to one of the people. The insider’s identity could not be confirmed, although the name has been included in U.S. intelligence reporting. The new intelligence, coupled with comments from Russian officials, underscores divisions within Putin’s upper echelon, where officials have long been loath to bring bad news to an autocratic Russian leader who is seen as more isolated that at any time in his 22-year rule. A spokesperson for the National Security Council declined to comment on the intelligence. The number of people Putin counts as close or trusted aides and advisers is small and composed primarily of colleagues from his days serving as a KBG officer and those he met while a deputy to the mayor of St. Petersburg in the 1990s after the collapse of the Soviet Union. The mobilization has sparked domestic unrest, prompted hundreds of thousands of Russian fighting-age men to flee the country and been beset by bureaucratic incompetence, with individuals being called up who are supposed to be excluded from service. As the war enters its eighth month, and Russian victory remains elusive and ill-defined, the unquestioning loyalty Putin has enjoyed may be slipping, intelligence officials said, but they cautioned there was no indication the Russian leader was on the brink of being swept aside. “Since the start of the occupation we have witnessed growing alarm from a number of Putin’s inner circle,” a Western intelligence official said. “Our assessments suggest they are particularly exercised by recent Russian losses, misguided direction and extensive military shortcomings.” A second senior Western official said the internal tensions are “consistent with the way in which the campaign has gone for the Russians, and the atmospherics in the Kremlin. There are a lot of people who are convinced this isn’t going well or the right course of action.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged there have been disagreements and debates among Russian leaders as Putin has faced crucial decisions such as the mobilization. “There is disagreement over such moments. Some think we should act differently,” Peskov told The Washington Post. “But this is all part of the usual working process.” Asked about disagreements within Putin’s inner circle, Peskov said, “There are working arguments: about the economy, about the conduct of the military operation. There are arguments about the education system. This is part of the normal working process, and it is not a sign of any split.” But Peskov said U.S. intelligence reporting about an individual in Putin’s inner circle directly challenging the Russian leader was “absolutely not true.” Armed with American and European weapons, Ukrainian forces have recaptured thousands of square miles of territory in recent weeks from a Russian military reeling from personnel shortages. The losses prompted a scramble by the Kremlin to organize hasty staged referendums and announce formal annexations of occupied land, widely condemned as illegal, all while beginning to draft hundreds of thousands of military reservists despite the risk of domestic opposition and protest. Putin has also threatened to take extreme measures to protect Russia’s territory, including the use of nuclear weapons, hoping the threat will make Ukraine’s backers think twice about how far Kyiv should be enabled to advance. The situation has led to public criticism of Putin’s defense minister and top generals in a rare outpouring of discontent. Ramzan Kadyrov, head of Russia’s Chechen Republic, who has sent Chechen militias to fight against Ukraine, lashed out at a top general in recent days and said he should be demoted to private. After the comments, Kadyrov announced that Putin had promoted the Chechen to the rank of colonel general. Yevgeniy Prigozhin, a longtime Putin ally whose Wagner mercenaries have also been fighting for Moscow in Ukraine, agreed with Kadyrov, describing Russian military leaders as “pieces of garbage” in a statement. One Moscow-installed official in occupied Kherson described a retreat in recent days by Russian forces northeast of the city as a “regrouping” and claimed the region was “locked down,” but also called top Russian military leaders traitors and incompetents. “Indeed, many people say that if they were the minister of defense, who brought things to this state of affairs, they would shoot themselves, if they were real officers,” Kirill Stremousov, deputy head of the Russia-installed Kherson administration, said Thursday in a video on Telegram. Putin’s problems on the battlefield are compounded by a haphazard mobilization at home. “It seems to me his position is fragile,” one Russian official said of Putin in an interview on the day the mobilization was announced. “In all these months we have heard that half the world is on our side. But neither Modi nor Xi are now supporting this,” the Russian official said, referring to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, who were seen to be distancing themselves from Putin’s war effort during a summit last month in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. In another conversation this week, the official said he had not heard about any direct challenges to Putin from within the inner circle. But “there are protests” by the heads of parliamentary committees about how the president and the military are conducting the war — “about why the army is not being supplied properly, about why the campaign is not going as it should,” the official said. Senior security officials in Europe said they were not aware that anyone had dared to challenge Putin directly over the course of events in Ukraine and added that they hadn’t seen the U.S. intelligence reporting on the criticism directed at Putin. Even so, some of those officials said that cracks were increasingly evident across multiple layers of the Russian system, citing outbreaks of criticism and finger-pointing across the Russian military, security services and regional governments now forcing military-age men into service. One senior European security official described growing “criticism of Putin — behind his back,” including from within the Kremlin ranks. “They think he’s stubborn,” the official said, and “obsessed with Ukraine” — an “obsession they do not necessarily share.” A second security official in Europe said: “There is scapegoating. Finger-pointing. All of this is happening.” Two Russian business executives who maintain contacts with political officials echoed those sentiments and said the coming weeks could be crucial for determining Putin’s future and what decisions he makes about the war. If the Russian military doesn’t stem its losses, then infighting will break out, said one of these people, a member of the Russian business elite. “This is a breaking point.” The mobilization of forces has proved widely unpopular in Russia and may signal that Putin feels pressured to take desperate measures. For months, Putin had resisted calling up additional forces, even as battlefield losses suggested he had not deployed sufficient forces at the outset of the war. As early as the spring of this year, when Putin’s plan for a quick invasion and occupation of Ukraine had clearly fizzled, U.S. intelligence analysts assessed that he would have to announce a broad mobilization — amounting to hundreds of thousands of additional troops — if he hoped to achieve his objectives, which at the time Putin believed he still could, according to a senior U.S. official familiar with the matter. Putin’s decision to call up what Russian officials say will be 300,000 additional troops ranks as among the most destabilizing and politically risky moves of his career and “may lead to regime instability,” a third European security official said. Others, however, said that despite a mass exodus of military-age men from Russia, Putin has crossed an important threshold without triggering any meaningful internal challenge to his rule. Even regional officials angered by the mobilization are overwhelmingly complying, supplying tens of thousands of recruits. “Everybody is keen on searching for signs of Russia folding, and you do see internal tensions,” a senior Baltic official said. “But Russia is now on a war footing, and they are still going. We haven’t seen anything to suggest otherwise.” Belton reported from London. The Cities With The Highest Costs To Co-Work Skift Travel News
The Cities With The Highest Costs To Co-Work Skift Travel News
The Cities With The Highest Costs To Co-Work – Skift Travel News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/the-cities-with-the-highest-costs-to-co-work-skift-travel-news/ For those companies planning on swapping offices for co-working spaces, one company has analyzed the cost of doing so around the world. You may be one of them — an estimated five million people will be based in co-working spaces by 2024, an increase of 158 percent on 2022. The U.S. features the three most expensive places for remote workers, with San Francisco, New York City and Boston topping a list of 53 cities. Rank City Country Co-working Space Search Volume Number of Co-working Spaces Average Cost Per Desk/Month (USD) 1 San Francisco U.S. 2,400 81 $359 2 New York U.S. 590 454 $356 3 Boston U.S. 1,300 65 $343 4 Hong Kong Hong Kong 1,600 341 $329 5 Sydney Australia 1,300 169 $318 6 Stockholm Sweden 1,000 84 $315 7 Tel Aviv Israel 210 39 $313 8 London UK 4,400 1,322 $308 9 Los Angeles U.S. 1,900 130 $305 10 Melbourne Australia 1,600 209 $297 Source: businessnamegenerator.com The new report also covers internet speeds, and looks at which cities are the best for commuters, based on travel times and costs. On this front, Doha in Qatar comes out on top: a one-way ticket on public transport costs an average of just $0.55, and a liter of petrol is $0.57. Commuters on public transportation can expect to wait just three minutes for transport, and their average commute time is only 30 minutes. But England’s capital is the most in demand, based on searches, ahead of Singapore and Berlin. It’s also got the most co-work spaces, and isn’t the costliest city with an average desk charge of $308 per month. However, that’s just for now. The cost of renting a desk will likely rise in the long term, for now WeWork’s entry-level All Access plan, for example, appears to be sticking at around $300 a month. Then there’s the question of glut: how much office real estate will eventually be transformed into multi-use spaces, and how far are companies  reverting back to their pre-pandemic working habits? As Jade Tinsley, head of marketing at Coworkintel, previously noted: while hotels and airlines can raise prices, office providers need to remain competitive and make co-working more accessible in these early days of the work revolution. Sidenotes More people are expected to travel for between Thanksgiving and the New Year than last year — causing a potential headache for travel managers as the blended travel trip shows no signs of easing up. Two in five travel managers (41 percent) have seen an increase in employees asking for blended travel, where they combine a business trip with a vacation or leisure component, the Global Business Travel Association revealed Thursday, based on its latest recovery poll. And according to a new report from consulting firm PwC, 46 percent of travelers in the U.S. plan to fly this winter, up from 40 percent in 2021. In 2019, just 35 percent of consumers were planning to get away for the festivities. With so-called bleisure tourism market expected to reach a valuation of $497.5 billion in 2022, travel managers could struggle to keep a rein on expenses as employees make the most of their next vacation. “Bleisure is here to stay,” Jonathan Kletzel, PwC’s US airline and travel practice leader, told Skift. “The idea that business travelers would fly out on Monday and come home Thursday is out the window, especially talking to hoteliers and airlines. They say their demand patterns have completely shifted.” Kletzel said companies may need to review their travel and expense policies. “I talk to corporate travel managers, and one of their concerns is how do we make sure that when someone’s on a leisure trip they’re not expensing things they shouldn’t,” he said. “If they book an Uber, is that for personal use? It’s an administrative challenge.” PwC’s Outlook report, which was published Thursday, also said millennials were increasingly diverting spending towards experiences over goods, which could pose another challenge for companies with younger workforces. “Travel managers are focusing more on experiences for their travelers, and it’s no longer just a finance-laden role. It’s become a means to retain talent,” Kletzel said. Independent Thinking The drive towards experiences was also reflected in the report’s findings that nearly a third more travelers were more comfortable with independent hotels this year than last, with 26 percent of respondents booking them for 2022, compared to 20 percent in 2021. Kletzel said it explains why so many hotel groups were rebranding to “try and feel more like an independent hotel” to capture this market. However, he said travel managers at larger companies weren’t seeing any difficulty when it comes to sourcing co-work spaces, despite a recent report saying just 17 percent said their procurement and management was “fully managed.” But they were reporting issues when trying to book venues, as they become quickly booked out. The question mark over inflation remains though. PwC’s report reveals gas prices as the number one travel-related concern at 74 percent, higher than the 55 percent associated with fears of another Covid-19 wave this winter. Yet Kletzel said the suppliers he has talked to have not cited any decreases in bookings as a direct result of worries over inflation. Wage increases, perhaps linked to inflation, have also led to more disposable income, which could be offsetting this. At the same time, a new report from Bankrate says while 43 percent of U.S. adults are planning to take trips between Thanksgiving and the New Year, 79 percent are changing their travel plans due to high inflation. 10-Second Corporate Travel Catch-Up Who and what Skift has covered over the past week: Amadeus, American Express Travel, Bookaway Group, Eurowings, Hong Kong, Selina, Sonesta, Traveloka, United Airlines, Virgin Atlantic. In Brief Travel Agencies Begin Transatlantic Alliance U.S.-based World Travel Inc. and the UK’s Clarity Travel have created a joint venture called One Global Travel. It was developed to help customers that were “tired of a lack of consistency in the network models and feel undervalued by the global mega-agencies,” according to general manager Jodie Gentles, who joined from Radius Travel. She also likened the new venture to an airline alliance “where the best in market carriers provide seamless transport throughout the world.” It will announce technology and commercial partnerships later this year. GlobalStar Boosts Asia Presence Agency consortium GlobalStar has added China’s Tongcheng Corporate Travel as a partner. The addition will now help the network extend its footprint into Asia. “The Asian market is intricate,” said GlobalStar CEO James Stevenson. “There is nothing like deep, local knowledge and expertise.” Tongcheng’s CEO Leon Huang said joining would also help the agency promote China’s business travel management expertise to the rest of the world globally.

7 Surprising Health Benefits Of Pumpkins AARP
7 Surprising Health Benefits Of Pumpkins AARP
7 Surprising Health Benefits Of Pumpkins – AARP https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/7-surprising-health-benefits-of-pumpkins-aarp/ The orange fruit of fall can help boost your immune system, protect your vision and even help you look younger artoleshko / Getty Images For many people, fall is practically synonymous with pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin bread and pumpkin pie. Although these treats are fine in moderation, they shouldn’t be mainstays of your diet. The problem is hardly the pumpkin itself, but rather the oodles of sugar and fat that tend to accompany such seasonal favorites. “Pumpkin has an impressive nutrient profile,” says Amy Kimberlain, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. “One cup of cooked pumpkin has 49 calories, virtually no fat, 2 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber,” and it’s loaded with beta-carotene, an antioxidant that gets converted in your body into vitamin A. Here are seven facts about pumpkins that might surprise you, as well as tips for enjoying it in a healthier manner. 1. It may help keep your immune system strong. Steering clear of sick people, practicing good hand hygiene and staying up to date on your flu, COVID-19 and pneumonia vaccines are still crucial. But if you’re looking to give your immune system a little extra boost this fall and winter, eating an ample variety of produce — including pumpkin and pumpkin seeds — may help, Kimberlain says. Pumpkin packs a wallop of vitamins and minerals, including several that may help get you through cold and flu season relatively unscathed. Vitamin A, for instance, may strengthen the immune system and help fight infections, Kimberlain says. Pumpkin also contains vitamin C, which increases the production of white blood cells, helps immune cells work more effectively and makes wounds heal faster, she adds. And pumpkin seeds offer myriad nutrients that support the immune system, including zinc. 2. It may help keep your vision sharp. In addition to beta-carotene, pumpkin provides lutein and zeaxanthin, powerful antioxidants that have been linked to better vision, says Lyssie Lakatos, a nutritionist, personal trainer and coauthor of The Nutrition Twins’ Veggie Cure. “Lutein has been shown to prevent macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in the U.S.” (for those 65 and older, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), she says. “Studies also show that high levels of both lutein and zeaxanthin protect the eyes from harmful UV light.” 3. It’s good for your heart. Pumpkin is a good source of potassium, which helps moderate blood pressure by counteracting the impact of sodium, as well as fiber, which lowers blood cholesterol. It also contains arginine, an amino acid your body needs to make nitric oxide, “which is critical for blood vessel relaxation and blood pressure reduction,” Lakatos says. See more Health & Wellness offers Pumpkin contains an array of antioxidants that may prevent LDL cholesterol (the “lousy” kind) from a process called oxidation. “When LDL cholesterol particles oxidize, this can restrict our blood vessels, ultimately increasing our risk for heart disease,” Kimberlain explains. 4. It may help you look younger. No, you can’t eat pumpkin in lieu of wearing sunscreen, but the beta-carotene in it provides some protection against UV rays that contribute to wrinkles, sunspots and skin cancer. The vitamin C and E in pumpkin serve as potent antioxidants that reduce damage caused by free radicals and promote the production of collagen, which helps to keep skin youthful and supple, Lakatos says. 5. Canned pumpkin and fresh pumpkin are similarly healthy — but read labels carefully. Fresh is best, but canned is a pretty close second and is usually much more convenient. The key, Kimberlain says, is to make sure you buy the version with only one ingredient: pumpkin! She notes that grocery stores often keep 100 percent canned pumpkin right next to “canned pumpkin pie mix,” which might look similar at first glance but contains added sugars and other ingredients. Pure canned pumpkin can be added to smoothies, oatmeal, baked goods, pancakes and much more. Need just a small amount? Pour the remainder into small, freezer-safe containers (or into a silicone ice cube tray covered with a gallon-size zip-close bag), freeze it and defrost as needed. 6. Pumpkin spice lattes contain little to no actual pumpkin. Most of these frothy drinks are totally pumpkin-less, though some versions contain a smidgen. In either case, the biggest problem is that these are really indulgent desserts in disguise: A 16-ounce cup may have as much as 400 calories, 50 grams of sugar and nearly half the maximum amount of saturated fat you should get in an entire day. (If you can’t pass it up, ordering yours with skim milk, less syrup and no whip will blunt the damage.)  Pumpkin pie spice doesn’t contain any pumpkin either, but this spice blend (typically cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger and allspice) offers plenty of health benefits — provided you use it to add flavor to otherwise healthy foods. Cinnamon might help balance blood sugar, ginger may relieve minor stomach upset, and nutmeg offers B vitamins and minerals, Kimberlain says. Try adding this seasoning to unsweetened applesauce, oatmeal or regular coffee or tea. 7. It’s technically a fruit, but it works in both savory and sweet recipes. Many people think of pumpkin as a vegetable, but treat it as a fruit by saving it for sweet drinks and desserts. Neither is quite right. By scientific definition, a fruit develops from the flower of a plant, while other parts are categorized as vegetables, so pumpkin fits the bill. And pumpkin itself isn’t inherently sweet; it’s all about what you pair with it. “Pumpkin is very versatile,” says Kimberlain, who likes to use it in risottos and chilies or simply roast it and serve as a side dish. Lakatos is a fan of pumpkin seed butter, an earthy green paste you can buy premade or make yourself (by pureeing pumpkin seeds with a small amount of sea salt). “I often recommend it to vegetarians, because it’s a good deal higher in protein than most nut butters,” she says. (It has about 9 grams per serving.) When you’re craving something with a little sweetness but don’t want to go overboard, try Lakatos’ recipe for Pumpkin Pie Oat Breakfast Muffins. It incorporates canned pumpkin and pumpkin seeds and has a reasonable 8 grams of sugar per muffin. (A typical blueberry muffin, in contrast, can have as much as 35 grams.) Pumpkin Trivia Pumpkins come in a wide range of sizes, some weighing more than 1,000 pounds. The heaviest pumpkin ever harvested weighed more than 2,700 pounds and was grown in Chianti, Italy.  The biggest pumpkin pie ever made weighed in at a whopping 3,699 pounds. It was created by the New Bremen Giant Pumpkin Growers and presented at the New Bremen Pumpkinfest in Ohio in 2010.   There are more than 100 varieties of pumpkins, including the miniature Sweetie Pie and the supersize Atlantic Giant. 85 percent of the canned pumpkin distributed worldwide is packed at the Nestlé/Libby’s factory in Morton, Illinois, a.k.a. the Pumpkin Capital of the World. Pumpkins are 90 percent water. A blend of cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg was included in a recipe for pumpkin (and squash) pie in the Fannie Farmer 1896 Cook Book: The Boston Cooking School. McCormick & Co. introduced the Pumpkin Pie spice blend of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and allspice in 1934. Hendon Hooker’s Perseverance Leading Revival Of Tennessee Football As Family Proudly Watches On – CBS Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/hendon-hookers-perseverance-leading-revival-of-tennessee-football-as-family-proudly-watches-on-cbs-sports/ Leon Hooker would have loved this week. He didn’t take spit off anybody. So, if someone wanted to fade his grandson, Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker, there would be a literal fight brewing this week of the LSU game.   Leon was maybe 5-foot-9, 160 pounds. He made furniture frames in a small North Carolina town where folks sometimes grew their own food. But watch out at Little League games. He’d get in the face of umpires.   Once, when his son didn’t play the season opener quarterbacking for North Carolina A&T, Leon told him to go back to his dorm, pack up his stuff. They were leaving. “My mom talked him out of it,” said Alan Hooker, son of Leon and father of Hendon. “He would look for confrontations. If he thought it was injustice, he was going to deal with it.” That’s why it’s a shame there is a key witness missing to what’s happening at Tennessee this fall. Leon was a proud, belligerent, loving grandfather to the quarterback leading the nation’s No. 1 offense. He died two years ago at age 78 having witnessed, as it turned out, enough. “He saw Hendon play [before he died],” Alan said. “He’d tell the world how much better Hendon was than me. He would not let go. He would constantly remind me, ‘You couldn’t make that throw boy. You couldn’t make that throw.'” Grandpa saw early what the rest of the world is now realizing: Hendon Hooker, a 24-year-old in his sixth year of eligibility, is a living example of perseverance, hard work and … crying. There was lots of crying before Hendon got to this point. Before we go there, let’s assess. The Virginia Tech transfer is coming off the best game of his career: 349 yards passing, 112 yards rushing and three total touchdowns against Florida. A bye week has let him and Tennessee soak in the adulation prior to the LSU meeting. Tennessee’s first 4-0 start since 2016 has him out front of this quick turnaround under second-year coach Josh Heupel. No. 8 Tennessee suddenly looks like challenger to Georgia in the SEC East. Its quarterback is certainly a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate almost halfway through the season. But in an SEC loaded with plenty of QB talent this season, Hooker is the only one who can say he leads the nation’s top offense — and that means just about everything. The Volunteers are exciting again. Neyland Stadium is selling out. There is a hint of the old days in the air by the banks of the Tennessee River. Hooker got there because there was a lot of what he didn’t know. He didn’t know he’d get COVID-19 two years ago, essentially derailing his career at Virginia Tech. He didn’t know there would be a scare involving a heart condition. He didn’t know that, 19 days after arriving on campus at UT, the coach that recruited him (Jeremy Pruitt) would be fired. Prove himself? Been there, done that. That included transferring from Virginia Tech after having started 15 games over three seasons. “I remember my parents visiting me in my apartment during that fall camp,” Hooker said of his run at the starting job as a Hokies’ redshirt freshman in 2019. (He didn’t win it.) “I was crying my eyes out. My dad being a great encourager said, ‘Everybody has a different path. This is going to be yours. It’s just another incredible scene in your story.’ It helped me persevere through tough times.” When COVID-19 hit him in 2020, the symptoms (loss of taste, runny nose) were not the hardest part for him personally. The pandemic upended his routine. In the offseason, Hooker was used to getting to the facility at 5 a.m. and throwing early with equipment managers. During that upside down COVID-19 period, health restrictions meant he couldn’t even access the hot tub after a workout. Then there was the heart issue before the season. A procedure ultimately revealed there was nothing wrong, but Hooker and his father blame medication from the procedure staying in the quarterback’s system creating an embarrassing episode three months later. Hooker was shown shaking and almost convulsing on the sideline during a December game against Clemson. When asked about his player after the game, Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said his quarterback was “cold.” The game time temperature was 37 degrees. Hooker said the medicine they’d used during the scope of his heart had “reactivated.” “You’re sitting on the sidelines so long with no movement,” Hooker recalled. “You’re on the top of the mountain [at Virginia Tech]. There’s no heat on the sidelines. You try to do some jumping jacks. All the sudden, my body just starts to shake. “My teeth are chattering. I see my fingernails turning blue. What in the world? This is crazy! To come back in the next day [and see] my coach told the media I was just cold was hurtful. I didn’t know what to say.” In that game, Hooker completed one pass, fumbled a snap and never play another down at Virginia Tech. The Hokies went with Braxton Burmeister to finish the season. It became clear there was no future for him there. “I grew up in Blacksburg,” Hooker said figuratively. “A lot of my friends from home came because I was there already. I tried to handle it professionally. … I jumped in the [transfer] portal a couple of days later. I remember coming in to tell Coach Fuente about it. It brought tears to my eyes because I really enjoyed being there.” Any animosity about the transfer from the Hooker angle was cleared up. “Old news,” Fuente said when reached for comment through an intermediary. Alan told CBS Sports his son ended up texting his old coach last year to wish him Merry Christmas. “There are no hard feelings there. Coach Fuente responded back, ‘Hey Hendon, you had a great year. I enjoyed watching you,'” Alan shared. A month later as a transfer who had just arrived in Knoxville, Tennessee, Hendon was studying a playbook that would be obsolete in less than three weeks. Pruitt left in shame, the center of an ongoing NCAA investigation regarding bringing in prospects during the COVID-19 dead period. The NCAA said Pruitt and his wife used money out of their own pockets on the recruits. The Hookers sensed instability. When they asked, “Do we need to look someplace else?” Tennessee quarterbacks coach Chris Weinke urged them to stay put. That spring, Heupel added Michigan‘s Joe Milton from the transfer portal. Hendon had another fight for a starting job on his hands. Maybe that’s the moment a bit of Grandpa Leon’s stubbornness kicked in. This would be where he made his stand. “Did he tell you about ‘The Last Dance?’ Alan asked. Well, no. It took some digging for an anecdote only a family could detail. Turns out Hendon and his brother, Alston, took up watching the documentary about the Chicago Bulls dynasty as a means of motivation. Michael Jordan famously motivated himself by exaggerating the tiniest of slights. Half the documentary is about Jordan’s perceptions of slights, incidents and beefs.   Now we see those issues being resolved on Saturdays. Alston, like his father before him, is a quarterback at North Carolina A&T. Hendon goes into Saturday tied for the national lead with the most touchdown passes without an interception this season (11). Only Heath Shuler (18) has thrown a TD in more consecutive games at Tennessee than Hooker (16 and counting). Against Florida, Hooker posted the most yards passing against the Gators by a Vols quarterback since Peyton Manning in 1997. Unlike Manning, Hooker also got a win over the Gators. Milton started the first two games of that 2021 season before Hooker took over. Then Tennessee truly morphed into Heupel’s vision. In seven of the remaining 11 games, the Vols scored at least 45 points. Tennessee jumped on opponents hard and fast. In his career, Heupel leads all active coaches averaging 12.79 points per first quarter. Hooker picked up where he left off at Virginia Tech. His decision-making remains incredible. His streak of 212 consecutive passes without an interception has already smashed the school record by 46. Since coming to Tennessee, he has thrown 39 touchdowns to only three picks. His career ratio (6.1-1) nearly triples the national average (2.2-1). After finishing the 2021 season ranked third nationally in pass efficiency, Hooker is currently sixth in 2022. It’s scorched earth type stuff. The Vols are averaging 559.3 yards per game. If the average of 48.5 points per game holds up, it will be a school record.    Hooker calls Heupel “the best coach in the America.” Heupel says he never had a player who understands the “why” of it all. Existential, yes, but Heupel seems to spread this kind of magic wherever he goes. It’s easy to forget the 44-year-old has two Heisman Trophy references on his resume. He was the runner-up for the trophy as Oklahoma‘s quarterback in 2000. Eight years later, he was Sam Bradford’s quarterbacks coach the year Bradford won the Heisman at OU. As Missouri‘s offensive coordinator in 2017, Heupel oversaw Drew Lock leading the country in touchdown passes (44) while setting the SEC and Missouri single-season records. Heupel’s had a chip on his own shoulder since being let go by Bob Stoops as OU’s co-offensive coordinator seven years ago. While at Mizzou, Heupel actually recruited Hooker. “I always remember what Coach Heup saw in me at the time,” Hooker said. “After some games he would let me know, ‘I saw the film, you look good.’ He would give me some insight into what they were running that week. I had them in my top five coming out of high school.” Virginia Tech was the choice because of a warm reception and a vision of the future. Out of Greensboro, North Carolina, Hooker was pursued by North Carolina, Wake Forest, South Carolina and NC State. Then Wolfpack offensive coordinator Elijah Drinkwitz was the first ...

6 New Gadgets To Keep On Your Radar – Gear Patrol https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/6-new-gadgets-to-keep-on-your-radar-gear-patrol/ This week, it was reported that the current iPhone SE will be the last iPhone to have Touch ID — it’ll be Face ID or nothing moving forward. Google held its big hardware event where it officially announced its newest Pixel smartphone and first Pixel smartwatch. And it looks like if you want to watch 4K videos on YouTube, you’re soon going to have to pay. But that’s just the news. Below, you’ll find a recap of all the cool new gadgets that were announced this week. Sony FX30 Sony The Sony FX30 is the newest entry in the company’s Cinema Line of digital film cameras. It’s essentially a more budget-friendly version of the FX3. It shares similar body and design, but opts for a 26-megapixel APS-C sensor instead of the FX3’s full-frame sensor. It’s positioned as a compact camera for new filmmakers. Price: $1,799+ LEARN MORE Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro Google Google Google held its big Pixel event this week where announced its latest flagship smartphones, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. As you’d expect, they Google’s best-ever smartphones with the most advanced camera capabilities of any Pixel smartphone to date. Both are powered the latest Tensor G2 chip, and they are actually more similar than they are different. The main differences are that the Pixel 7 Pro has a bigger display, more advanced camera (specifically for zoom) and a longer lasting battery. Both are pretty affordable for flagship smartphones, too. Price: $599+ (Pixel 7); $899+ (Pixel 7 Pro) LEARN MORE Pro-Ject Vinyl NRS Box S3 Courtesy The Vinyl NRS Box S3 is new and niche component for your turntable setup. It’s meant to go between your phono preamp and amplifier (or powered speaker). It then filters and reduces the noise (the crackles and skips) that a turntable picks up because the record is slightly damaged or warped. Available in black or silver finishes. Price: $399 LEARN MORE Audioengine DAC3 Courtesy The Audioengine DAC3 is a tiny portable USB-C DAC/amp that’s designed to squeeze that extra quality out of your smartphone or laptop. It packs a ES9281A PRO DAC and supports high-end lossless audio (up to 32-bit/384kHz including MQA files); it looks to be a perfect and relatively budget-friendly option for people who like to listen to Tidal (or another lossless streaming service) and who have a pair of high-end wired headphones. Price: $149 LEARN MORE Nest Doorbell (Wired) Courtesy Google announced a second-generation model of its smart doorbell, the Nest Doorbell — and it’s a modest update. It looks basically identical to its predecessor and has all the same capabilities. The difference is that it has better local storage capabilities — specifically it can store an hour worth of video footage even if the Wi-Fi goes down temporarily — and it supports HDR, so the video quality it captures should look a little bit better no matter the time of day or the lighting conditions. Available in four finishes: green, gray, beige or white. Price: $180 LEARN MORE Clear Audio Roam Sport Courtesy Clear Audio announced a new pair of wireless earbuds for runs and workouts. The Roam Sport have an IPX4 water-resistance rating and have active noise-cancellation. The earbuds look fairly similar to the Beats Fits Pro, as they both work with a silicone earhook to help them fit more securely. The kicker is that they come with $100 price tag, which is very competitive. Price: $100 LEARN MORE

Oil Falls On Dollar Strength, Focus Turns To U.S. Jobs Data – Reuters https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/oil-falls-on-dollar-strength-focus-turns-to-u-s-jobs-data-reuters/ Oct 7 (Reuters) – Oil futures inched lower on Friday as a firm dollar weighed on prices ahead of key U.S. jobs data, although benchmarks were headed for a weekly gain on OPEC+’s move to cut production. Brent crude futures were down 25 cents, or 0.26%, to $94.17 a barrel at 0649 GMT. WTI crude futures were down 25 cents at $88.20 a barrel, after earlier hitting $89.37 per barrel, the highest since Sept. 14. A stronger greenback added pressure to oil prices amid a chorus of hawkish Federal Reserve speakers signaling further aggressive policy tightening. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Fed Governor Lisa Cook, Chicago Fed President Charles Evans and Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari all stressed the fight against inflation was ongoing and they were not prepared to change course. read more Markets will keenly watch the U.S. nonfarm payrolls report due later on Friday, with economists forecasting 250,000 jobs were added last month, compared with 315,000 in August. “Oil is leaking lower in Asia, which is not so unusual after a big run-up heading into the weekend, especially against rising U.S. yields and a stronger dollar providing the downdraft and triggering some pre-weekend and pre-nonfarm payroll profit-taking,” Stephen Innes, managing partner at SPI Asset Management said in a note. However, both benchmarks were headed for weekly gains, fuelled by producer group OPEC+’s output cut announcement. The cut from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies including Russia, together known as OPEC+, is the largest since 2020 and comes ahead of a European Union embargo on Russian oil. The decision would squeeze supplies in an already tight market, adding to inflation. read more “Market sentiment was already bearish in anticipation of a weakening global economy, and this decision should further tighten the market,” analysts at ANZ Research said in a note. Tightening monetary policy and China’s ongoing COVID-related movement restrictions mean global demand growth is expected to come under pressure, ANZ added. U.S. President Joe Biden expressed disappointment on Thursday over OPEC+’s plans and he and officials said the United States was looking at all possible alternatives to keep prices from rising. Some of those options include releasing more oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve or exploring a curb on energy exports by U.S. companies. read more “More SPR releases are being largely offset by lower production from UAE and Kuwait, still keeping the market in deficit in the fourth quarter,” JP Morgan analysts said in a note, adding Brent prices could re-test $100 per barrel this quarter. Top 10 Tips When Booking Your Olivia Cruise – San Francisco Bay Times – San Francisco Bay Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/top-10-tips-when-booking-your-olivia-cruise-san-francisco-bay-times-san-francisco-bay-times/ By Maggie Beaumier and Kelly McMahon– For nearly five decades, Olivia’s mission has been to provide safe and celebrating spaces for lesbians and LGBTQ+ women. And today, that mission continues. Olivia is the leading travel company for lesbians and LGBTQ+ women, having produced well over 300 trips for more than 350,000 women. From large cruises to resorts, intimate riverboats to adventure vacations, the company always charters the entire ship or resort so that guests can always feel free to be themselves. Exceptional entertainment, friendly personalized service from Team Olivia, bucket list destinations, and friendships that last a lifetime are just some of the highlights guests will find on an Olivia vacation. Follow these tips to make the most out of your Olivia trip: 1. Talk to an Olivia Travel Consultant. You can book online at any time, but you can also talk to an Olivia Travel Consultant who will be happy to answer any questions. They can help you select the cabin that best fits your needs and your budget. They can also set you up with a payment plan and recommend which travel insurance coverage is best for you. Not ready to book just yet? Your consultant can put a courtesy hold on a cabin so you can talk it over with your partner … or better yet, if it’s a surprise, they can make sure we keep it a secret (at least until embarkation day). 2. Buy travel insurance. You’ve earned your vacation. Safeguard your investment, whether you buy travel insurance through Olivia or on your own. Protect yourself in case of lost baggage, missed flights, or medical emergencies while traveling. It’s worth the peace of mind. 3. Make sure your passport isn’t expired. If you’re sailing to an international destination, it’s always a good idea to bring a passport, even if it’s not required for the ports you’ll be visiting. If you ever need an emergency flight home, it will be much easier to book if you have your passport on hand. Also make sure that it hasn’t expired and is valid for at least six months after your cruise ends. 4. Pack smart. Olivia cruisers have all sorts of tips and tricks to share. Some favorites include bringing magnets to attach Olivia’s daily program to your cabin wall or decorations to spruce up your door with pictures and other mementos. Towel clips will stop your beach towel from flying off your lounger on a breezy day. Packing cubes are perfect for squeezing one more theme night outfit into your luggage. Hanging shoe bags store toiletries vertically and keep your bathroom clutter free. 5. Put medications in your carry-on and important documents in a folder. Stay prepared and organized by packing your medications (including an extra week’s supply) and valuables in your carry-on and your important documents all in one folder. Keep your cruise ticket and passport close at hand as you may have to show them a few times during embarkation. Depending on your itinerary, you may also need to carry your passport or other documents with you when you go ashore. 6. Join the Olivia Facebook Group for your cruise. Every Olivia trip has a Facebook group. Be sure to join as it’s a great way to make new friends even before you step on board. Stay connected, get insider tips from seasoned Olivia travelers, and share in the excitement of your upcoming vacation! 7. Arrive a day or two ahead of your cruise departure. Plan to arrive at least a day ahead of the sail date, especially if you are flying. Arriving early helps ensure that you don’t miss the boat (literally). Plus, it allows you to shake off any jet lag and rest up before embarkation day. Olivia provides host hotels with preferential rates for our guests. Be sure to book early since Olivia room blocks can sell out quickly. 8. Get to know your ship. Familiarize yourself with the deck layout and take a virtual tour. On embarkation day, walk along the decks and take yourself on a tour of the ship. Scout out some favorite spots, including any quiet corners in case you need some downtime or a private space to soak in all of the Olivia excitement around you. 9. Be prepared to celebrate. Come as you are and indulge in the entire Olivia experience—from incredible entertainment and signature programming to community and camaraderie 24/7. Be prepared to make friendships that will last a lifetime. 10. Don’t feel like you have to do it all. With so many exciting events happening all week—including solo traveler meet and greets, Sisters at Play mixers for BIPOC guests, Gen-O gatherings for Olivians under 40, OWL trivia (for Older Wiser Lesbians), alumni parties, nightly entertainment, theme nights with incredible DJs, and so much more—you just might need a vacation after your vacation. But remember, you can do as much or as little as you’d like. This is your time, and you’ll want to find moments just to chill, relax, and watch the world sail by. A Proper Diet And Exercise Are Essential To Good Health But Here Are 25 Other Beneficial Actions PhillyVoice.com
A Proper Diet And Exercise Are Essential To Good Health But Here Are 25 Other Beneficial Actions PhillyVoice.com
A Proper Diet And Exercise Are Essential To Good Health, But Here Are 25 Other Beneficial Actions – PhillyVoice.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/a-proper-diet-and-exercise-are-essential-to-good-health-but-here-are-25-other-beneficial-actions-phillyvoice-com/ Late in the summer, back-to-back studies documented how poorly the health of American men compares to those in other affluent countries, and that women now out-live men by nearly six years.   Last month, I offered a compelling list of 25 benefits from living healthy. By referencing science-based outcomes like a longer life, improved sleep and some social incentives – like better sex – my hope was that a consolidated presentation would supply the power to grab men’s attention and prompt them to take action. Motivation strong enough to counter the decades-long saga of men neglecting their health reflected in the studies. MORE FROM LOUIS BEZICH Need some motivation to start a healthy lifestyle? Here are 25 benefits With the U.S. life expectancy gap among genders growing, it’s time for men to take action  Spending time with grandchildren can help older adults find a sense of purpose The pathway to a healthy lifestyle is clear, but more men need to find the motivation to follow it Creating my own one-two counterpunch, I committed to follow-up this inventory with a rundown of best practices, specifically those that would prove a healthy lifestyle to be more than just sweat and starvation. While diet and exercise are at the core of one’s physical regimen, healthy habits include behaviors that improve mental health and well-being, and also can be a source of fun! So, as promised, here’s a look at a broader set of ideas to be active.  Mindset matters  As always, I like to anchor my case in science, so before I offer the new ideas, let me offer touch on the importance of your frame of mind. A 2021 paper from Frontiers in Psychology suggests that there is an ever-expanding number of behaviors included under the umbrella of healthy behavior. This prompted the authors to characterize being healthy as a process in which traditional views of physical activity and healthy eating as boring and depriving are replaced by a mindset in which they are appealing and valued, and can ultimately produce a culture in which they are enjoyed! In short, they argue that mindset matters when it comes to overcoming this barrier to behavior change. Leveraging this expanded menu of behavior will enable you to ditch the notion that fitness is drudgery, find the attraction and sustain your engagement over the long haul.   More tips   With the right perspective in place, here are some additional tips on the widening portfolio of healthy tactics. The Mayo Clinic reminds us that movement outside of normal structured exercise can generate similar benefits. Activities like house cleaning, making the bed, shopping, mowing and gardening are all forms of physical activity that can help, particularly if you log the number of minutes per week recommended for standard exercise – 150 minutes per week of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity. In a reference to diet, the Mayo Clinic recommends keeping a journal to track your reaction to meals and snacks so you can modify your diet to maximize achievement.   Another thought on changing your lifestyle comes from the Harvard Medical School, which recognizes that “every individual has his or her own lifestyle and needs an individualized approach to changing it.” For those looking to adopt healthy behaviors, the experts at Harvard encourage their patients to connect their desired behaviors with what matters in their lives, and help them build the confidence so important to behavior change. With an extended and diversified bundle of healthy activities, you can tailor a regimen that works for you and supports the more conventional dimensions of diet and exercise.  Fun stuff  Michigan State University presents a number of alternative activities for individuals and families – with fun in mind. They include dancing, walking, swimming and hiking. And the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs adds bicycling with family or friends, or a beginner’s exercise class.  25 ways to stay healthy For my closing argument, I pulled from my PhillyVoice archives to assemble my top 25 healthy behaviors outside the realm of standard diet and exercise. All are grounded in science with the link to the original article so you can easily get the details. Consistent with my previous column, the shear number of alternative strategies makes the point that there’s a lot you can do for yourself that produces both health and happiness. Yes, healthy behavior may be anchored by diet and exercise, but there is a wide range of activities that can supplement the more common regimens.   1. Hydrate 2. Be optimistic 3. Maintain loving relationships 4. Laugh 5. Get enough sleep 6. Hug 7. Enjoy nature 8. Take cold rinse showers 9. Leverage the power of anticipation 10.Practice gratitude 11. Simplify your life 12. Communicate more 13. Build intergenerational relationships 14. Maintain friendships 15. Get an annual physical 16. Consider an encore career 17. Listen to music 18. Set goals 19. Establish rituals 20. Keep an active social life 21. Drink in moderation 22. Rethink masculinity 23. Practice proper grooming 24. Recognize the power of women 25. Leverage financial incentives There you have it. Make the most of these alternative tactics. Reflect on the laundry list of benefits I presented last time, and connect the dots. As the experts have said, your attitude makes a big difference. If you can get to the point where you see and feel the value of living healthy, it will make a world of difference and enhance your chances of sustaining the behaviors. Trust me, I’ve been to the top of this mountain and it’s a great place. Time to start your own journey. With each of us moving forward in a new direction, collectively, we can change the fate of American men once and for all. Manufacturing Still Important | News, Sports, Jobs – The Steubenville Herald-Star https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/manufacturing-still-important-news-sports-jobs-the-steubenville-herald-star/ Today is observed as National Manufacturing Day. Set on the first Friday of October, Manufacturing Day is a way to emphasize the importance manufacturing has played in our nation’s history and to highlight the influence of manufacturing in today’s economy. The Ohio Valley knows well the impact of manufacturing in its many forms. Without various industries, many of our communities wouldn’t exist. Whether we look at the pottery, glass and brick-making of the late 1800s and early 1900s, or the work of the steel mills and its various offshoots, there is much in which we have taken pride when it comes to our connections to manufacturing. Those connections, while not as robust, continue today, with new industries coming to our region as part of continuing efforts toward an economic rebirth. These companies may not be large, employing thousands of residents and producing heavy smoke along with their materials, but they certainly are making a difference. Whether it be hand tools; gas compressors or pressure valves for the natural gas industry; the production of tinplate; the building of electric boats and boat motors; or numerous other products, manufacturing is still alive and well in our nation and in the Ohio Valley. These companies provide good-paying jobs for those willing to do the work, and they are looking to grow, meaning even more jobs in the future. Manufacturing, whatever its form, will continue to be an integral part of our world, and today we remember its importance in our past and look forward to its contributions in the future. Disney: The Metaverse Digital Transformation And The Future Of Storytelling Forbes
Disney: The Metaverse Digital Transformation And The Future Of Storytelling Forbes
Disney: The Metaverse, Digital Transformation, And The Future Of Storytelling – Forbes https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/disney-the-metaverse-digital-transformation-and-the-future-of-storytelling-forbes/ The Walt Disney Company is one of the world’s best-known entertainment brands and is responsible for some of the best-loved children’s stories of all time. For this reason, the much-hyped concept of the metaverse – immersive, experiential online environments ripe with potential for magic and storytelling – is a perfect fit for its business strategy. Adobe Stock Disney’s IP includes Marvel, Star Wars, its vast library of animated movies going back over 60 years, and beloved children’s brands such as Disney Princesses and Disney Villains. It stands to reason that any sort of shared, online digital universe focusing on these worlds and characters would most likely be a huge money earner for “the house of mouse”. Although specific details of this are currently few and far between, it would seem a fairly safe bet that it is cooking something up along these lines! As well as movies, TV shows, and cartoons, the legendary entertainment brand is, of course, famous for its resorts and theme parks. This ability to bring fantasy to life in the real world also ties in neatly with the metaverse, which many believe will focus on blending the real with the virtual. For these reasons, Disney is probably one of the companies that are best placed to capitalize on the opportunities offered by connected, immersive, and persistent virtual worlds. So here’s an overview of some of the ways we know or expect that it will jump on this exciting new trend. Getting the team together To build metaverse opportunities, you need people in place. Disney has shown it is working on this with the appointment of its first “metaverse executive”, Mike White, to start building the metaverse strategy. Mike’s title is SVP of next-generation storytelling and consumer experiences, and it’s thought he will focus on understanding the potential of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and other metaverse-aligned technologies. What these technologies offer Disney and other entertainment and media conglomerates is a whole new range of tools for building new audience experiences. Disney has traditionally always been forward-looking and was quick to jump the arrival of previous game-changing breakthroughs such as the arrival of television, computer-generated animation, video games, and the internet, so there’s no reason it will treat the arrival of the age of VR and the metaverse any differently. Other new hires at Disney that hint at the potential it sees in this technology include Erin Green, formerly head of communications for mixed reality (MR) research at Meta (Facebook). Hiring senior people at this level shows that Disney is serious about establishing itself as a key player in the metaverse industry – an industry that it is predicted could be worth up to $13 trillion by 2030. On top of this, Disney was also highlighted as the company with the greatest interest in hiring AR and VR staff during the first quarter of 2022. Next-Generation Storytelling Storytelling lies at the heart of everything that has made Disney great, and it makes sense that it will be the lynchpin that holds together its metaverse strategy. When people think of Disney stories, however, they are most likely to first think of the passive experiences of its movies and TV shows. However, CEO Bob Chapek has made it clear that he intends for this to change, having recently said during an earnings call: “We realize that it’s going to be less of a passive-type experience where you just have playback, whether it’s a sporting event or whether it’s an entertainment offering and more of an interactive, lean-forward, actively engaged type experience.” A number of virtual reality experiences have already been created based on Disney properties, perhaps most notably the Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge Star Wars-themed experience. While not a true metaverse experience, being limited to one individual player, it shows that Disney is serious about the potential of VR. Some have suggested that recent trademark applications suggest that a metaverse experience of some sort based on the Marvel brand is also under development and could be unveiled soon. Blockchain and NFTs Many fans of the metaverse concept believe that blockchains and related technologies such as non-fungible tokens (NFTs) will play a big role in the new worlds that are being built. This is because they enable virtual worlds (and anything else virtual, really) to be built with a degree of decentralization – freedom from centralized control of any one authority. In Disney’s case, it would probably want to keep centralized control of its own digital environments – if it was to make a virtual theme park, for example. But NFTs, in particular, also hold the potential for creating unique digital collectibles and limited-edition virtual assets. All things that fans of Disney’s brands are known to value! The company has already created a series of NFTs called Golden Moments, celebrating some of its most loved characters and moments from its movies. Unlike the huge range of traditional, physical collectibles the company sells, these ones are designed to go on providing revenue for the company. Thanks to the “smart contract” functionality that can be built into NFTs, a fee of six percent is taken by Disney every time they are traded or re-sold among fans and collectors. Theme Parks And Virtual Worlds Chapek has said, “We have something no one else has … our parks. If the metaverse is the blending of the physical and the digital in one environment, who can do it better than Disney?” In fact, this blending has been going on for a while – visitors to Disney parks, resorts, hotels, and cruise ships have long been able to take advantage of “magic” wristbands that can be used to unlock a variety of virtual and real-world interactions, as well as store credits that can be used for purchases in shops and restaurants. It has also created a virtual assistant-style application called Genie, which helps you plan your visit and can create a personalized itinerary, so visitors don’t miss out on the attractions they are most likely to enjoy. These could be thought of as the initial building blocks of a metaverse plan that includes theme parks. More clues could be found in a recent patent application. This hints that the company is interested in building AR environments that don’t require users to wear headsets. According to the application, this would involve a technology known as SLAM – Simultaneous Localization and Mapping. This would theoretically track guests’ movements through a real-world environment – a theme park, for example – and use projectors to bring characters to life in front of their eyes. Similar technology is already used during live performances and parades at the parks; the difference here is that the visuals will be personalized to specific visitors, creating an experience that’s unique to the individual. Disney and the Metaverse – A Perfect Match? So, while concrete details on Disney’s plans for the metaverse are, as of writing, scarce, it seems clear that plans of one kind or another are afoot. Through savvy marketing and commercial skills, and a thorough understanding of its own strengths and weaknesses, Disney has achieved the remarkable feat of remaining just as relevant with today’s Generation Z kids as it was with the baby boomer generation that first made it a household name. In recent years, headline-grabbing acquisitions like Marvel and Lucasfilm have given it custody of enduring favorite brands and characters that are ripe for adaption into new technology-driven storytelling experiences. Put together, these factors ensure that the House of Mouse is well-placed to play a leading role in the development of the metaverse. I Tried These 12 Beauty Hacks And I’ve Incorporated So Many Of Them Into My Daily Routine… – The US Sun https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/i-tried-these-12-beauty-hacks-and-ive-incorporated-so-many-of-them-into-my-daily-routine-the-us-sun/ A BEAUTY expert has revealed 12 simple hacks that will make your products last longer. For shoppers looking to save money against inflation prices, using every bit of your beauty favorites is key. 3 You can save money on beauty products by decanting your product into bottles that limit how much you useCredit: Amazon 3 Tiny beauty spatulas are also great for scraping out every last bit of product from your moisturizing containersCredit: Amazon 3 Other cool gadgets like a tube squeezer will help you save money as inflation jacks up the prices of essentialsCredit: Amazon The first tip involves getting every last bit of that lipstick you’ve been loving. You can scrape out lipstick and other beauty products with small spatulas that will prevent any possible waste. After you scrape out the remaining bits of lipstick, you can melt them down and pour the product into lidded pots that are on sale at Amazon for $6.99, Huffpost reported. This way, you can keep using your favorite lipstick for a good while before you have to purchase your next. Another tip involves revitalizing dry eye makeup with saline. You can actually squirt a few drops of saline into gel liner or cream eye shadow that’s looking less than desirable to bring it back to life. There are also measures you can take to help old, gloopy nail polish. Once you get a cheap bottle of nail polish remover, all it takes is a couple of drops in your old bottle to make it last longer. Most read in Hair & Beauty There’s nothing more frustrating than accidentally dropping a pressed powder that still has tons of use left. Luckily, you can fix a smashed eyeshadow or damaged blush with some rubbing alcohol. All you have to do is add a few drops to the broken product and repress it with a kitchen towel and the back of a spoon. You can also make liquid foundation go further and last longer by adding drops of cheap highlighting liquid before applying it, Huffpost reported. Not only will it stretch the product, but it will also add a dewy glow to your skin. Another beauty gadget that pays for itself is a tube squeezer that can extract every last bit of your products. And you can also help to prevent waste by switching to a silicone sponge instead of a regular one. A non-absorbant silicone makeup sponge, which blends makeup without sucking up any product, will help you get the most out of your foundation and concealer. When you’re looking to save money on beauty products, it may be beneficial to take note of how long your products actually last. Some solid products, like this shea butter shampoo bar, could outlive a liquid counterpart. In order for these solid products to last long, however, you’re gonna need to take care of them. Make sure you get a soap dish that can protect your new beauty purchases from getting soggy and falling apart. A fun way to liven up your bathroom space and also reduce waste is to fill reuseable pump bottles with liquid product. These amber bottles help you to really control how much shampoo or conditioner you use so you aren’t losing money with each wash. It turns out some beauty items can quickly turn bad if they see too much direct sunlight or heat. You can extend the life of items by organizing a small drawer in your fridge that keeps foundation, night cream, and nail varnish cool and fresh.

In today’s edition, Olga Kharif imagines a reversible crypto world: Crypto’s Undoing For proponents of blockchain technology, some of its biggest strengths lie in the fact that open-source digital ledgers are under no one’s control, and that transactions, once made, can’t be tinkered with. On major blockchains like Ethereum, anyone can be involved in operations, and no one party should have veto power — a hallmark of a so-called permissionless system, where everything is governed by computer code. U.S. Conducts Back-To-Back Raids In Syria Killing Key ISIS Operatives The Washington Post
U.S. Conducts Back-To-Back Raids In Syria, Killing Key ISIS Operatives – The Washington Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/u-s-conducts-back-to-back-raids-in-syria-killing-key-isis-operatives-the-washington-post/ The U.S. military announced on Thursday that it had conducted two raids in Syria within a day of each other, killing two key ISIS targets and their associates. According to U.S. Central Command, American forces conducted an airstrike in northern Syria on Thursday that targeted and killed Abu-Hashum al-Umawi, a deputy wali, or governor, in Syria, as well as “another senior ISIS official associated with him,” whom the military did not name. “This strike will degrade ISIS’s ability to destabilize the region and strike at our forces and partners,” Army Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, who leads U.S. Central Command, said in a statement announcing the raid and al-Umawi’s death. “Our forces remain in the region to ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS.” The operation against al-Umawi followed a Wednesday night helicopter raid in northeastern Syria, near the village of Qamishli, that targeted and killed Rakkan Wahid al-Shammri, as well as one other associate. Al-Shammri was an ISIS smuggler known to bring in weapons, fighters and money to support the terrorist organization, who had also beheaded two members of the Syrian Defense Forces, according to a person familiar with the operation who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the particulars of the raid and its target. The raids are the latest in recent operations aimed at killing influential ISIS figures. Over the summer, U.S. military forces killed Hani Ahmed al-Kurdi, a senior ISIS bombmaker known as the “Wali of Raqqa.” That followed the killing of al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, ISIS’s leader at the time, who is believed to have rigged his hideout in Atma, Syria, with explosives that were detonated when the structure was raided. The Qurayshi operation became mired in a greater controversy about whether the U.S. military had taken enough steps to ensure the safety of civilians after UNICEF and local witnesses counted at least five children dead. In the aftermath of that strike, U.S. forces have been careful to point out that successful raids against ISIS targets have not resulted in civilian injury or death. U.S. Central Command’s Thursday announcements about the most recent ISIS raids varied slightly, however, in the certainty with which they proclaimed the operations had avoided causing civilian harm. “No U.S. forces were injured or killed during the operation, no civilians were killed or wounded, and there was no loss or damage to U.S. equipment,” the news release announcing the al-Shammri killing stated. While the news release announcing the death of al-Umawi stated with similar confidence that there had been no injuries among U.S. forces and no damage to U.S. equipment, the status report on civilians was slightly less assured. “Initial assessments indicate no civilians were killed or wounded during this operation,” that announcement stated.

San Antonio Group Aims To Remove Barriers Preventing Ex-Felons, People In Jail From Voting – KENS5.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/san-antonio-group-aims-to-remove-barriers-preventing-ex-felons-people-in-jail-from-voting-kens5-com/ Under Texas law, ex-felons can vote once their sentence is completed. One woman is trying to reach marginalized groups to educate them on voting rights. SAN ANTONIO — With six days left to sign up in Bexar County—one woman is trying to reach all eligible voters. That includes registering voters who may not know they still have that right. The group Radical Registrars hosts civil engagement classes twice a month at the Bexar County Jail. The co-founder says their goal is to educate people to use their most fundamental right—and it’s surprising to some people they can still use their voice. On paper, voting may be hard to someone doing it for the first time. “I want you to know the truth about your eligibility to vote,” Valerie Reiffert is a San Antonio native and co-founder of the Radical Registrars group. Once somebody gets out of jail and completes their sentence, including parole or probation, it can be hard to adjust back to reality. “With the population here usually it’s black and brown folks and for a very long time, we’re told if you’re a felon, especially if you live in certain areas that you can never vote,” Reiffert said. But under Texas law—one’s right to vote is automatically restored once their sentence is complete. A person can be confined in jail but eligible to vote if they have not been ruled mentally incompetent for trial and someone who has not been convicted of a felony. Reiffert has ran across many people who didn’t know. “This year I was told a story about someone in their 70s and had a felony in their 20s, how they have never voted in their life, and just found out this year they could register to vote,” Reiffert said. And in class—she reached another person who can vote. Reiffert has done the groundwork since 2020 after the protests following George Floyd’s death. In the class she breaks down political parties, their values, which candidates are up for election and how the process works. Each of the inmates within the class would engage and ask questions to Reiffert about their eligibility. “It’s one of the joys of doing this, not only knowing knowledge is power, but it does feel really good removing that barrier from people’s minds and hopefully getting the truth circulating faster than the rumor,” Reiffert says once the women are off papers (or completed their sentence) they can feel empowered to use their voice. Reiffert will be hosting more classes this month. You can check out our KENS 5 voter guide to view your voter registration.

Wanted: Clean Air For Healthy Living — Opinion – Guardian Nigeria https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/wanted-clean-air-for-healthy-living-opinion-guardian-nigeria/ Not unexpectedly, the global celebration of clean air for healthy living was large without impact in Nigeria; no thanks to the myriad of economic, political and insecurity problems that have made other important issues look insignificant. Yet, this country, perhaps more than most others, needs a searchlight on her environmental matters, given its huge population of about 200 million, the massive neglect of the environment and the corresponding negative impact on health. Certainly, air pollution is a problem that has not been sufficiently acknowledged as one. The time to address it concertedly should not be further postponed. In the wake of the apparently unending air pollution across the world especially among industrial nations like China, America and Britain, the United Nations had every reason to take the gong the other day ahead of the third-year celebration of International Day of Clean Air for blue skies and called for cleaner air globally. Indeed, the UN is right to be worried as the world continues to face the ordeal of air pollution. Over the years, the evidence base for the harm caused by air pollution has been growing rapidly and points to significant risks to the world and particularly so, to people living in lower-income countries. In its bid to achieve cleaner and safe air globally, the UN has outlined certain steps to reduce air pollution and keep people and the planet healthy and safe. This year’s event aimed to raise awareness and facilitate actions to improve air quality around the world. According to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, climate change and air pollution are a deadly duo. Therefore, all countries must strive and work together to combat air pollution and invest in renewable energy and swiftly transit from fossil fuel as well as rapidly move to zero-emission vehicles and alternative modes of transportation. In addition, efforts need to be made to increase access to clean cooking, heating and cooling; and recycle waste instead of burning it. Insofar as air pollution persists globally among both the rich and poor nations, polluted air may continue to be one of the burdens and greatest environmental threats to public health even as it accounts for an estimated seven million premature deaths every year. Air pollution and climate change are closely linked as all major pollutants have an impact on the climate and most share common sources with greenhouse gases. As the UN scribe noted: “Today, air pollution is denying billions of people their rights. Dirty air affects 99 per cent of people on the planet, and the poor suffer worst; especially women and girls who suffer from cooking and heating with dirty fuels.” Indeed, the consistent lamentations of the UN about air pollution and the gloomy picture it paints about the planet, especially with climate change belie the fact that there are regulations on air pollution which, unfortunately, many nations are not obeying. Failure of the major pollutants to strictly adhere to regulations constitutes a major problem. The unrelenting air pollution and climate change around the world would impact negatively on the people’s livelihood and increase restiveness among regions in Africa. In Nigeria, the environment is a largely neglected issue over the years. Hence, oil pollution and gas flaring in the Niger Delta region have lasted for decades with no end in sight as the goal post to stop gas flaring continues to be shifted due to a lack of political will by the government as well as the pretext that oil industries cannot stop flaring gas so long as they prospect for oil. As expected, the unabated pollution and gas flare has degraded both land and water surfaces, thereby rendering fishing and farming impracticable in the region. To make matters worse, the few fertile portions of land have become a regular disorder between farmers and herders overgrazing and destruction of farm produce. The danger and health implications these portend are enormous, as people are dying from hunger and disease, much against the Sustenance Development Goal (SDG) 3 2030 that stipulates the imperative to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for people of all ages. Regrettably, neither the Federal Government nor state governments see air pollution as a national security threat. Aside from the deadly situation in oil-producing areas, air pollution is pervasive in cities through industrial and vehicular emissions, cooking with firewood, refuse to burn, improper disposal of waste and other uncontrolled human activities. Most of these activities undermine existing laws that governments, even at the local level, could enforce but for negligence and official ineptitude. It is important for all governments to have a change of attitude in this regard. Findings have prompted the United Nations to annually highlight the importance of clean air for blues skies. The theme for this year is, “The Air We Share,” essentially, these are mere expressions used by the international body to deliver beautiful keynote speeches and rehearse the same air pollution problems plaguing the world without holding pollutants to account. Over the years, the world has been unable to be on the same page in tackling climate change and air pollution in order to ensure a healthy and sustainable planet. There has been no curtailment of the massive annual air pollution and climate change crisis. The consequence of climate change and the catalogue of air pollution plaguing the world is too numerous to mention. For instance, the sustainable management of water resources and access to safe water and sanitation which are essential for unlocking economic growth and productivity should be sustained in order to fulfil the needs of the growing population as well as provide significant leverage for existing investments in health education. It remains worrisome that the issues often end up as the subject of international diplomatic discussion leaving the people and planet to suffer. It is time for the UN to work out a coherent approach and call on all countries to work together and combat air pollution. Such collective and affirmative action would save millions of lives each year, slow climate change and speed up sustainable development. It is important for the world body to monitor air pollution, make laws to implement WHO guidelines and deliver credible plans to reduce emissions from vehicles, power plants, construction and industry. It is more important for individual countries, including Nigeria, to take the campaign for clean air beyond the present rhetorical level.

Appier Board Member Lee-Feng Chien On Metaverse: The Strong Get Stronger, The Weak Get Weaker – DIGITIMES https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/appier-board-member-lee-feng-chien-on-metaverse-the-strong-get-stronger-the-weak-get-weaker-digitimes/ The much-discussed “metaverse” has brought a disruption to the market but also declared a possibility for future innovation, stated Lee-Feng Chien, former managing director of Google Taiwan and current board member of Appier and iKala. With Web3 as a basis, developers, governments, and users are all looking forward to more new technological development. Chien rasies three perspectives worth noting regarding mertaverse: First, allows everyone to examine new technological opportunities. For instance, past blockchain technology was originally meant for confidentiality. Now, it’s able to create trust and decentralization. AR/VR is a technology, but they also provide content that’s a fusion of virtual and reality. The second is the indication of technology trends. We’ve already observed that investment is increasingly directed toward Web3, with trends in credibility, high-speed transfer, and 3D content. The third is that everyone needs to pay attention to the possible impacts of these technologies, such as information security, privacy, and equality. AI technology has already caused racial controversy and increased the economic gap. The metaverse will affect the development of technology and society, causing the strong to get stronger and the weak to get weaker. Chien mentioned that right now, the region that has been paying the most attention to the metaverse is East Asia. In addition, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have been the biggest beneficiary. The metaverse is an open and fair virtual world built using blockchain technology, thus everyone can play games, purchase items and socialize through NFT virtual property. The pandemic also worked to the metaverse’s advantage as it allowed more people to imagine digital life. Chien emphasized that “the metaverse is like an elephant.” It is so big that each person and each industry has only grasped a tiny portion of it so far. Everyone is still feeling it out and trying to describe their understanding of the metaverse. Even those who aren’t familiar with the internet and the digital world are forced to experienced digital life.

What if I told you there was a way to open these apps on newer Google Pixel devices with one quick gesture? I imagine you’d want to know how to do it. Similar to Back Tap for iOS, Quick Tap for Android 12 and newer triggers shortcuts for apps and actions by briskly tapping the back of your device twice. It’s only available for Pixel 4a (5G) and newer devices, and some shortcuts require you to unlock your Pixel before you can use them. If you have a newer Pixel model, keep reading to see how to set up this helpful shortcut. Don’t Miss: How to Open Snapchat Directly to Camera, Stories, Chat, and More from Anywhere on Your Pixel Step 1: Open Your Quick Tap Settings To start, open your Settings app and scroll to the “System” section. Tap it, then select the “Gestures” menu, followed by the “Quick Tap to start actions” option. Step 2: Set Quick Tap to Open App Ensure that the “Use Quick Tap” switch at the top of the Quick Tap settings is toggled on. Below the switch, you’ll find some of the stock shortcuts available for Quick Tap. You can choose any of the preset options, such as “Take a screenshot” or “Toggle flashlight,” but you’ll want to select “Open app” and tap the cog next to it to choose a specific app on your Pixel. Step 3: Select the App You Want After tapping the cog icon, you’ll find an alphabetical list of all the apps on your smartphone. Scroll down to find your app, then select it. Some apps are offset by a cog icon, which means they can launch particular actions within them, not just the app itself. For example: Snapchat lets you open the app directly to Stories, Map, Chat, or Spotlight. Amazon Shopping has options for Today’s Deals, Shopping Cart, Search on Amazon, and View Orders. Google Maps sports Work and Home options. YouTube Music gives quick access to Downloads and Search. There are many more apps that support in-app actions for Quick Tap, such as LinkedIn, Lyft, Meet, Messages, Messenger, Voice, Walmart, and Wear OS. Step 4: Get to Tapping Now, all you have to do is tap the back of your Pixel twice to launch your chosen app. If you find that the gesture is too sensitive, just return to Step 2 above, scroll to the bottom, and toggle on “Require stronger taps.” Keep Your Connection Secure Without a Monthly Bill.
