Shares in the Asia-Pacific fell on Friday ahead of the monthly U.S. jobs report, which is likely to guide the Federal Reserve’s monetary decision in November.
Payrolls are expected to increase 275,000 in September, and unemployment is predicted to be steady at 3.7%, according to economists surveyed by Dow Jones.
The Nikkei 225 in Japan fell 0.59% and the Topix index slipped 0.6%. South Korea’s Kospi was flat and the Kosdaq dropped 0.33%. The Hang Seng index in Hong Kong lost around 1% and the Hang Seng Tech index shed 2.66%.
In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.6%. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan fell 0.88%. Markets in mainland China remain closed for a holiday.
Overnight in the U.S., major indexes fell — the Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 346.93 points, or 1.15%, to 29,926.94. The S&P 500 declined 1.02% to 3,744.52, while the Nasdaq Composite was 0.68% lower at 11,073.31.
“Equities struggled as markets await the much-anticipated U.S. payrolls data … and as comments from Fed officials maintained a ‘more is needed’ vibe,” ANZ Research analysts wrote in a Friday note.
Malaysia set to announce its budget for 2023
Malaysia’s budget will carry an “even more pronounced” election focus now that speculation of a vote happening this year has grown, according to Mizuho.
Economist Lavanya Venkateswaran wrote in a note, “higher allocations towards cash handouts and other social transfers” are expected, but the government also needs to balance that with the “reality of fading commodity tailwinds in 2023,” which will affect Malaysia’s tax revenues.
“In walking a fine line between sticking to its fiscal consolidation agenda and playing up the election card, we suspect the governments’ scope to announce more medium-term tax reforms (diversifying the tax base away from oil, for example) is limited,” she wrote.
“The underlying assumption is that the government sticks to its stated fiscal consolidation agenda of narrowing the deficit to 5.0% of GDP from 2022-2024; this implies a deficit of 4.5-5.0% of GDP in 2023,” the note said.

ST. GEORGE — Utah Gov. Spencer J. Cox discussed water conservancy, partisan animosity in America, ethical news sources, suicide in Utah, Utah Tech University’s name change and affordable housing during a Thursday event in St. George.

Addressing Utah Tech students, staff and community members in an open forum facilitated by Utah Tech President Richard B. Williams, the public forum consisted of Cox responding to written questions submitted by Utah Tech students at the beginning of the meeting.
Cox said the purpose of his traveling political tour is “to meet with as many people and organizations as possible,” including high school students, college campuses, business organizations, medical professionals and chambers of commerce.
Cox’s comments about specific topics are outlined by topic in the sections below.
Water conservancy
“Water is a big deal everywhere in the state of Utah,” Cox said. “This is the question I get asked most. Water is foundational for our survival … We have to use less across the board.
“I believe that weather is cyclical and the climate is changing … All I know is I have to deal with what we have right now, and right now … the Great Salt Lake is drying up, and there is not enough water in the Colorado river or in Lake Powell for what we want to do here.”
Regarding solutions, the governor spoke about the Lake Powell pipeline and delegating most of the water conservancy to local levels.
“I’ve been very clear, and I know this is controversial, but I’m on record as supporting the late Lake Powell pipeline.
“The question is, if the pipeline takes longer, if it’s delayed, what does that look like? If we can get it built and we have all the resources, what does that look like? That’s not up to us. There are other decision makers that have to weigh in on that.
“The concrete (solutions) I expect to come from Washington County,” Cox told St. George News. “Our job is to support. You guys know better. Obviously, the conservation piece is really important, and you’re doing that.”

Cox reemphasized his commitment to supporting Southern Utah.
“St. George is not an island on its own,” Cox said. “You are a part of the state of Utah, even if you feel like you’re a couple hundred miles away from Salt Lake City. This is a Utah problem, and we are committed to work with you to solve the problem.”
Reducing housing costs
Cox said supply rates of housing in Utah need to increase if Utahns want housing costs to decrease.
“If we can’t build houses, we can’t have people live here,” Cox said. “I will tell you right now what will happen. The only people that will end up living in St. George are billionaires in California. That’s what will happen if we can’t continue to build.”
Voter fraud and public transportation
Addressing concerns about voter fraud, Cox said he joins Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) in supporting the integrity of Utah’s elections and county clerk offices, and he invited anyone doubtful of the elections to ask a county clerk for a tour and explanation about the election process.
The governor also spoke about how he hopes public transportation increases across the state.
“My biggest dream in life,” he said, “and I know it’s a long ways out — would be a high-speed rail from Salt Lake to St. George.”
Partisan ‘contempt’
Cox spent a significant amount of the forum discussing what he described as animosity between political parties in the United States.
“We have to get back to a time,” Cox said, “when we were willing to see each other as Americans first and partisans second.
“Politics for too many people has become their religion. There are fewer Americans now attending church regularly than any time in our country’s history. If we don’t have those things that bring us together as a community and politics become our religion, then anybody that disagrees with us is equal to a heretic.”
Cox said social, philanthropic clubs like Rotary Club used to be highly active and filled with members for the betterment of local communities, but now these organizations lack community volunteers. Social media is replacing those groups, Cox said, and social media allows individuals to collectively hate others without producing healthy communities.
“I’m not interested in ‘owning’ the libs,” Cox said. “I’m interested in trying to convince the libs that there’s a different way, a better way. Many will disagree with me, but if I can at least start having a conversation and listening to them, then I have an opportunity to show them why I believe what I believe, and they’re more likely to listen and respect that. I think that’s how we fix politics.”
Advice for Generation Z
Following a question from Williams about the upcoming generation’s involvement with politics, Cox spoke directly to Generation Z in the room.
“I’m so worried that our children are so cynical,” he said. “You’re being led to believe that this is the worst time in the history of the world, that we’re all going to die because of … war, climate change. These are serious issues, but you think it’s the worst economy ever. There’s never been a better time in the history of the world to live in Utah.

“Don’t let anyone tell you the world is worse today,” Cox said. “The world is in a great place. We have stuff to fix, and we can fix it together … We can solve every single problem that we’ve ever faced. There are more jobs available right now than ever before in our state’s history.”
Mainstream media
The governor spoke plainly about his thoughts about mainstream news media.
“Cable media is evil,” Cox said. “CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, — they’re all evil. They are trying to brainwash you. They have psychologists that help them program this stuff to get you addicted to … contempt. It is addicting.”
Cox spoke of how a close family member of his constantly consumed mainstream news and became overtly negative about life until the family member stopped being “addicted to outrage coming through cable news.”
“Once he got away from that,” Cox said, “he started seeing joy again, started loving people again, started seeing how much good there is in the world.”
“The best decision I ever made was nine years ago, we turned off cable news. I’m nine years sober.”
Instead of listening and watching mainstream news commentary, Cox said, Utahns should draw information from local news and hard, factual newscasting in mainstream sources.
“What I encourage you to do is to look at sources from different points of view,” he said.
The institution of the family
Cox explained how American trust in institutions is at an all-time low in the country, and he’s concerned most about the institution of the family.
“If you look at all of the problems that we face as a society — homelessness, drug addiction, mental health … our prison population — all of these societal problems, the best place to get upstream from that is when we have strong families, resilient families. So I created the first Office of Family.”
Cox expressed his concern that Utah’s birth rate has decreased to 1.9 births per female, which is below state replacement rate
“That’s happening across the United States as marriage rates are declining, and sometimes the government makes it worse.
“We want to make sure we have policies that support families that uplift families and help families through difficult times, because if we can do that, we’ll save billions of dollars of taxpayer money … and we’ll have happier people.
Cox explained how Utah used to not offer maternity leave to mothers, but now the state offers three weeks of maternity leave.
“I would like to get more than that, but maternity leave is one area where we could help families. We need to be more thoughtful, especially in light of the DOPS decision and the changes with abortion to make sure we’re supporting mothers, especially single mothers, supporting families and helping them do what they want to do.”

Utah Tech name change
At the conclusion of his remarks, Cox spoke about Utah Tech’s recent name change from Dixie State University.
“I actually completely understand and feel the passion of those who were opposed to the name change,” he said. “My reasoning for being willing to support the name change is not the race piece of that. I know that’s gotten a lot of publicity. I don’t think that that’s especially helpful.
“As I traveled around the country, and any time Dixie came up, there was mass confusion, like, ‘Wait a minute, is that in Georgia?’ I would get asked that all the time.
“I realized there was a real ceiling to what this could be because names matter in branding … now that I’ve seen it and experienced it, it’s awesome, and I’m having conversations I never got to have before … I know that doesn’t satisfy people, and I don’t expect you to agree with that at all.”
Suicide in Utah
After the public forum, Cox spoke to Utah Tech’s Political Institute behind closed doors and answered their personal questions. One student a...

Texas Organizing Project Sues Bexar County For Not Proposing Enough Polling Locations – KSAT San Antonio https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/texas-organizing-project-sues-bexar-county-for-not-proposing-enough-polling-locations-ksat-san-antonio/
‘Fewest locations we’ve ever had for a general election,’ Texas Civil Rights Project official says
The Texas Organizing Project is challenging Bexar County in court for not proposing enough polling locations ahead of election day.
SAN ANTONIO – The Texas Organizing Project is challenging Bexar County in court for not proposing enough polling locations ahead of Election Day.
The lawsuit states Bexar County is proposing the fewest number of polling locations the county has ever had for a general election.
A judge agreed there was a need for more polling locations in a similar lawsuit filed against the county in 2020.
The Texas Civil Rights Project represents the progressive nonprofit Texas Organizing Project in the lawsuit against Bexar County.
Joaquin Gonzales, with Texas Civil Rights Project, said there are not enough places where voters can cast a ballot.
“We realized that, actually, the county had been operating fewer polling places than it was supposed to be operating. But in 2020 was the first time it was sued over,” Gonzales said.
Bexar County uses a countywide polling program, meaning state law requires the number of polling locations to be half the number of precincts.
There are 766 precincts in the county, so there should be a minimum of 388 polling locations. The elections office is proposing 267.
“Which would also be the fewest locations we’ve ever had for a general election,” Gonzales said.
KSAT reached out to Bexar County Elections Administrator Jacque Callanen about the decision. She declined to comment.
However, when commissioners discussed voting locations, Callanen said on Sept. 7 that she closed several polling locations with low voter turnout.
“We’d open a site, and there were 25 people that voted all day. Can you imagine less than two people an hour? That’s not efficient,” Callanen said.
Callanen spoke about the difficulty of staffing, but the Texas Organizing Project argues having fewer polling locations violates the law.
“The Elections Department just wants to focus on cutting costs and doing what’s going to be easiest and sort of the least amount of work, but not what’s going to give the most access to voters,” Gonzales said.
Attorneys hope the county will agree to add more polling places after losing a similar lawsuit in 2020.
Otherwise, there will be a hearing next week for immediate relief to establish new locations ahead of Election Day on Nov. 8.

Visa Approval Delays Slow International Tourism To L.A. Los Angeles Times
Visa Approval Delays Slow International Tourism To L.A. – Los Angeles Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/visa-approval-delays-slow-international-tourism-to-l-a-los-angeles-times/
Los Angeles was one of the nation’s hottest tourist destinations before the pandemic struck, reporting a record 51 million domestic and international visitors, who spent $25 billion on hotel stays, meals, tour buses and souvenirs.
With most pandemic travel restrictions gone, the nation’s tourism leaders say delays by the federal government in approving tourist visas are now robbing L.A. and other U.S. tourist destinations of millions of visitors and billions of dollars in tourism spending.
“Outrageous wait times send a message to travelers that the United States is closed for business,” Geoff Freeman, chief executive of the U.S. Travel Assn., the nation’s travel trade group, said Thursday.
The U.S. Travel Assn. released a study Thursday, estimating that in 2023, the U.S. is projected to lose $11.6 billion in tourism spending because 6.6 million international travelers will be unable to get visitor visas to travel to the U.S. in a timely manner. Wait times of 400 days and longer to get an interview for a visitor’s visa have deterred potential tourists primarily from Brazil, India and Mexico, according to the study.
Instead of visiting the U.S., most of those travelers would probably choose another vacation destination if visa wait times exceeded a year, the survey of nearly 2,500 potential tourists from Brazil, India and Mexico determined.
Adam Burke, chief executive of the Los Angeles Tourism and Convention Board, agreed that longer waits for visa interviews are keeping international tourists from visiting the region, but he commended federal officials for trying to address the problem.
“We know there is tremendous pent up demand for travel to the U.S., which is being hindered by these delayed visa wait times,” Burke said in a statement.
The tourism and convention board is forecasting 5.3 million international visitors for the fiscal year that ends June 30, 2023, a 58% increase over the prior year.
The U.S. Department of State, which oversees approval of visas for travelers from certain countries, has been hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, and many embassies and consulates “continue to face staffing challenges that began during the pandemic,” a spokesperson for the agency said in a statement.
The department has bolstered staffing levels, partly by hiring diplomats’ family members, to cut the wait times for visa interviews, the agency said.
“Visa processing is rebounding faster than projected, after a near-complete shutdown and freezing of resources during the pandemic,” the statement said.
International visitors spent $13.7 billion in the U.S. in August, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce, up from $6.8 billion in 2021 but less than the $19.5 billion spent in 2019.
In Los Angeles, international visitors have accounted for less than 10% of all tourists but generated more than their share of spending because they tend to stay longer and buy more meals, drinks and souvenirs than domestic visitors. Before the pandemic, the number of visitors from China was growing dramatically, prompting several shopping centers in Los Angeles to hire Mandarin-speaking translators to accommodate the tourists.
The U.S. Department of Commerce announced plans in June to launch a five-year plan to attract 90 million international visitors, who would spend an estimated $279 billion annually by 2027.
When asked during a news conference about the long waits to get visa interviews, Grant Harris, the assistant secretary of commerce for industry and analysis, put part of the blame for the delays on the pandemic and said his department was working to reduce the visa wait times.
“This is going to be something that we want to continue to work on so that we are facilitating travel to and within the United States,” he said.

Kuni Tyessi in Abuja
An Indian citizen and proprietress of Spaholic, Mrs. Vandana Kaushal has reiterated the benefits of water in and outside the body, saying that it is unarguably one natural remedy for wellness, beauty and preservation.
Kaushal who spoke in Abuja during the unveiling of a branch of Spaholic, a beauty parlour that takes care of the physical, social and mental well-being of both men and women, said spa which means health through water is not only a need but a necessity for healthy living which should be the concern of everyone.
Emphasising that beauty is about women empowerment, he said women must take care of themselves first in order to be able to take care of their spouses and children.
She said with the services available, women can gain more confidence with well cultured nails, beautiful exfoliated skin, brushed and proper groomed hair, as well as other body pamperings needed to boost both mental and psychological health.
She also said as a foreigner, she lives Nigeria more than her home country and in the business of employing as many youths as the opportunity provides.
“Health benefits are many in spa treatment, particularly when it relates to hygiene. Clients are taught how to take care of themselves and how to bathe professionally. There are many beauty treatments available and many don’t take care of their hair and skin and so we treat that and make them feel good.
“You can take care of your family, but never forget to take care of yourself. If you live yourself, then you can take care of your family better. No one will want to see a woman who is not properly put together around the house.
“I want women to look beautiful and gorgeous and become more empowered. The future is female and women are going to work it and rule it as well. It cannot be done when you are not confident. What makes you confident is looking good and living yourself. Your beauty is what makes you more confident. So confidence needed to be generated and we take care of everyone. So women, look good for yourself, your husband and children. Take care of yourself, skin and hair,” she said.

Warriors’ Draymond Green Apologizes For Fight With Teammate – Bally Sports https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/warriors-draymond-green-apologizes-for-fight-with-teammate-bally-sports/
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Golden State Warriors star Draymond Green apologized to the team a day after fighting with teammate Jordan Poole during practice, general manager Bob Myers said.
Poole practiced Thursday while Green didn’t, and Myers said any potential discipline would be handled internally. Warriors coach Steve Kerr said Green will be away from the team again Friday and expects him to return Saturday.
NBA Finals MVP Stephen Curry said he didn’t know what triggered the issue between Green and Poole and noted “it is possible to get through things like this,” and called it his job not to let it break the team.
Kerr praised Poole’s approach during camp.
“Jordan has been fantastic throughout camp,” Kerr said. “Someone put out there that Jordan had an attitude in camp, nothing can be further from the truth. He’s been fantastic. Disappointing to see misinformation out there but I wanted to make sure I set the record straight on that. Everything else we will handle internally and go from there.”
Myers said he doesn’t anticipate Green missing any games for Wednesday’s altercation.
“Everybody’s fine,” Myers said, saying the team is lucky nobody got hurt. “Look, it’s the NBA, professional sports, these things happen. Nobody likes it. We don’t condone it, but it happened.
“Draymond apologized to the team this morning, Jordan was there in the room, I was there in the room with the team, the coaches, the players and we heard that.”
The Athletic first reported the scuffle, saying Green struck Poole. Myers said “space is good” regarding Green not practicing and going home after he addressed the team.
Curry said “JP’s been great and there’s nothing that warranted the situation yesterday.”
Curry added one of Green’s “superpowers is bringing his fire, competitiveness and voice.” Regarding the apology, “it’s necessary but you’d have to ask every guy individually how they received it, JP especially,” Curry said.
“The vibe today in practice was great, trying to take advantage of this week and make it about basketball and our preparation for the season,” Curry said. “It’s obviously an unfortunate situation getting asked about it and a situation that could have been avoided but there’s a lot of trust in the fabric of our team, who we are, who we know those two guys to be and how we’ll get through it and try to continue to make it about playing great basketball. The personal dynamics and stuff will work themselves out. That’s part of the culture that we’ve built here. I like how we responded today, we had a great practice, good energy. Try to keep that as the focus as we move forward.”
The fiery Green, a four-time NBA champion and four-time All-Star, has long been considered the emotional leader of the Warriors. He’s been willing to get into it with his teammates when he feels it’s appropriate. There is a “tough love” element to every team, Myers said, noting “Draymond is absolutely a leader on this team.”
Green regularly pushes the league limit for technical fouls. He was suspended one game without pay in November 2018 for conduct detrimental to the team following an altercation with Kevin Durant. Green also sat out Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals for an accumulation of flagrant fouls.
“It’s unfortunate, I’m not going to deny it,” Myers said about the latest incident. “It’ll take some time to move through, but we’ll move through it and move forward and I’m confident that we will. We’ve got a good team, we’ve got good leadership, we’ve got some guys that have been here a long time.”
Warriors’ Draymond Green apologizes for fight with teammate
Poole’s representatives are in discussions with Myers about a contract extension ahead of the Oct. 17 deadline, one day before the defending NBA champions open the season at home against the Lakers.
Both Poole and Andrew Wiggins insisted on media day their unsettled contract situations were not the top thing on their mind going into the preseason. Myers said he didn’t consider this dustup as something that was about “who’s getting paid and who isn’t.” Curry agreed.
Golden State is back in the Bay Area this week and on the practice floor in San Francisco after a pair of preseason wins in Japan against the Wizards.
Myers doesn’t expect the incident to have a lingering effect.
“First, like anything you want to make sure everybody’s OK, that’s the No. 1 thing,” Myers said. “After that, nobody likes these things, so how do you move forward? There’s a process to these things, there’s apologies, there’s time.”

And just like that, our Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro first impressions (opens in new tab) are available, as well. Both of these phones represent a clear evolution on top of last year’s revolutionary design, sporting the camera bar but adding a layer of aluminum protection on top instead of being all glass like last year’s Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. These are still very distinctive phones, and there’s little chance you’d ever mistake them for a phone made by any other company.

Other notable improvements include much brighter displays — up to 1500 nits bright — and the Tensor G2 processor that packs in a bevy of improvements for all things Googly.
Somehow, Google looks to have improved its award-winning cameras this year, as well. A better ultra-wide-angle lens can also be used for super macro photos, and the camera on the Pixel 7 Pro can zoom out to 30x clearly. While some other phones can do this already, Google says its next generation super res zoom tech will outdo them all. And don’t forget the video improvements, as well! Better zoom, better stabilization, and less noise than last year. Check out Chris’s impressions for all the nitty gritty details.

In case you missed it, our Pixel Watch first impressions (opens in new tab) are now available for all to peruse. Chris got to spend some quality time with the watch — including several different kinds of bands — and brings his smartwatch expertise to the event on our behalf.
It seems to finally be the melding of Fitbit and Wear OS that we’ve been waiting for since Google acquired Fitbit more than 18 months ago. There are a ton of unique features and major selling points for anyone looking for a new smartwatch this year, and it seems that Google specifically might have shied away from forcing folks to buy a Pixel phone just to get the best experience with the Pixel Watch.

Google is really showing off the cohesive style of its new lineup, which all look like they’ve been purposefully designed together (instead of as separate products). It shows a Google working together like we seldom see. Heck, Google’s announcement of the Nest WiFi Pro (opens in new tab) just the other day seems like the entire team didn’t get the message about Google getting rid of Stadia, for example.
(Image credit: Chris Wedel / Android Central)
Google’s got lots of these dioramas hanging around the event space and at the Google Store right next door in Brooklyn proving the point. Like a color? You can get it in the phone, watch, and earbuds, and Google’s Material You design language also looks and feels cohesive between products. Boy, is it ever a nice change of pace from the usual Google.

Our man Chris Wedel is on the ground in Brooklyn, New York covering the Pixel event for Android Central and is getting his hands on just about everything Google announced today. First up is the Google Pixel Watch! It looks right at home next to a Pixel 7, I’d say.
(Image credit: Chris Wedel / Android Central)
Google is selling it in a range of colors and band styles, and the way the band attaches to the body of the watch is nothing short of brilliant. It’s both easy to do and super quick, two things that aren’t usually associated with watch bands.
(Image credit: Chris Wedel / Android Central)
And here it is next to a Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 Pro (opens in new tab) to help illustrate how svelte Google’s design is next to Samsung’s more industrial style. Samsung’s watches have always looked great, but Google is definitely going for a much more glamorous look with this watch!

One of the coolest things Google showed off today wasn’t a product feature or spec. It was what the Pixel Watch and Pixel 7 phones are made of!
Specifically, the Pixel Watch is made of 80% recycled steel, and all fabric watch bands for the watch are made of 100% recycled yarn.
On the phone side of things, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro feature 100% recycled aluminum frames. That’s not just the outer edge that you can see when holding the phone, either. It also includes core components of the phone’s structure, as you can see in the image below.

Pixel Watch will be integrating Fitbit in seriously deep ways, including the full Fitbit app we talked about before today’s event went live. That includes proper sleep tracking with full stats on the watch, constant heart rate monitoring throughout the day, and even a wellness report along with a health metrics dashboard for aggregating all that data into one cohesive, easy-to-understand place.

Here’s a better look at the Pixel Tablet on its dock. Looks like we guessed right (opens in new tab) back in May when we surmised that Google was turning this thing into a detachable Nest Hub. The speaker on the dock alone makes it look like it’s worth buying if you’re planning to pick up a Pixel Tablet when it comes out next year. I bet the audio from that thing is killer.
As you would expect from a Nest Hub, docking the tablet will change up the UI to look more like Google’s smart displays, including the famous Google Photos always-on display that we all know and love from those products.

Google’s spending all this time teasing everyone about the Pixel Tablet, but it won’t be available any time soon. According to Google, it will still be arriving sometime in 2023, and we’re hoping that it will be early in the year.

The rumors were right…Pixel Tablet can be paired with the Charging Speaker Dock, transforming your tablet into a portable Nest Hub Max. Looking at this from the front, it looks almost indistinguishable, including the massive bezels around the screen.

Google’s on stage going on about how the Pixel Tablet slots right into the rest of the Pixel ecosystem. This is going to be pretty interesting with its stylus support, and the same Tensor G2 chip as the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

Google just announced next generation Super Res Zoom on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. In a nutshell, all zoom levels are now enhanced with Tensor G2’s machine learning algorithms making them sharper and more detailed than ever (without looking oversharp).
Both phones support the new 2x zoom which Google says looks identical to 2x optical zoom from a dedicated lens.
Pixel 7 Pro offers a 5x optical zoom lens and is able to perform the same machine learning upscaling on photos zoomed in at 10x, making them look identical to photos taken with a dedicated 10x lens.
Lastly, Google says it’s offering up to 30x clear zoom on the Pixel 7 Pro, making it the farthest zoom we’ve yet seen on a Pixel phone.
These new zoom capabilities also work on video taken from the phones, and Google’s new object tracking will keep moving objects in the frame even when you zoom up to 20x into the shot. You’ll see from the images below that there’s a new preview thumbnail that shows what’s in focus.

Google talked about how Pixel was first to the game with always-on display on the Pixel 2, how it launched Night Sight on the Pixel 3 to revolutionize low light photos, and how car crash detection has been available on Pixel since 2019. Always love the shade, Google.

Google says the Pixel 6a (opens in new tab) is the fastest-selling Pixel ever. That doesn’t seem too surprising given the price of the phone and how impressive its camera is, and it shows that Google’s Pixel line is getting more popular over time.

Binance Smart Chain Halts After ‘Potential Exploit’ Drains Estimated $100M In Crypto – CoinDesk https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/binance-smart-chain-halts-after-potential-exploit-drains-estimated-100m-in-crypto-coindesk/

Binance Smart Chain hit the brakes Thursday after the blockchain with ties to the world’s largest crypto exchange suffered what it called a “potential exploit” that on-chain evidence suggested could have targeted hundreds of millions of dollars in crypto.
“Due to irregular activity we’re temporarily pausing BSC,” BNB Chain tweeted from its official account, later confirming that the activity was a “potential exploit,” that it characterized as contained.
Initial token movements suggested that up to two million BSC tokens were targeted by an attacker late Thursday, but the true losses may be much lower. BNB Chain estimated $100 to $110 million in assets were moved off chain but said in a tweet that $7 million was already frozen.
That such a small (comparatively speaking) sum of assets were stolen underscored the upside of BNB’s gamble to halt the chain rather than risk more assets escaping. Blockchains are purportedly decentralized beasts designed to operate beyond the whim of singular entities: you aren’t supposed to just flip an off switch.
BSC confirmed that it coordinated a shutdown of the chain after spotting issues with the BSC Token Hub protocol, the clearinghouse for crypto transactions moving between the Binance-linked blockchain’s interlocking parts. It thanked validators for moving quickly.
“We are humbled by the speed and collaboration from the community to freeze funds,” one tweet read.
The specter of an attack rocked BSC’s native BNB token, which after a sleepy day of trading dipped to $280.40 from $293.10, according to CoinMarketCap, which Binance owns.
On-chain data shows that this afternoon two massive withdrawals of 1 million BSC tokens from BSC token hub by an attacker that nabbed crypto assets with cross-chains swaps, bridges, and borrows. Regardless, BNB’s Twitter promised “all funds are safe” and said it will “help freeze any transfers.”
Twitter sleuths point out that Tether – the largest stablecoin provider – has blacklisted the offending address, suggesting that the firm suspects the movement of tokens was the result of an attack rather than something more benign.

Google Pixel Event Pixel 7 Pixel 7 Pro Pixel Watch And Pixel Tablet Launch Toms Guide
Google Pixel Event — Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel Watch And Pixel Tablet Launch – Tom’s Guide https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/google-pixel-event-pixel-7-pixel-7-pro-pixel-watch-and-pixel-tablet-launch-toms-guide-2/
The Google Pixel event has just unleashed a wave of new Google devices, and there’s a big theme around intelligence and being helpful to users.
The highlights are the new Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel Watch (the first-ever Google smartwatch), but we also got to learn more about the Google Pixel Tablet.
For the Pixel phones, Google is focusing on sleeker designs and especially better camera quality and video features. I’m personally excited to see the faster new Night mode, Photo Unblur feature, as well as the macro mode and Super Res Zoom on the Pixel 7 Pro.
Meanwhile, the Pixel Watch touts the best heart rate monitoring in a smartwatch along with Fitbit and Google features coming together on your wrist. The Pixel Tablet doubles as a smart display and speaker with the dock stand accessory, so it should be useful even if it’s across the room.
Here’s everything announced at the Google Pixel event.
Google event products
Pixel 7 Pro: Google’s newest $899 flagship is sure to impress. The Pixel 7 Pro gets a Tensor chipset, 6.7-inch OLED display and lots of camera upgrades. These include a powerful 5x telephoto lens and new macro focus mode for closeups. The Pixel 7 Pro also gets its Cinematic Blur for video, which utilizes Tensor’s power to add an artistic blur effect and shallow depth of field to your videos. The Pixel 7 Pro can also lock on your subject while zoomed in with photos and videos.
Tensor also powers the new Photo Unblur, which can unblur your photos much like Magic Eraser can remove things. Night Sight also got an upgrade and is now two times faster than before, meaning you should get more stable low-light shots. Finally, the Pixel 7 Pro has Face Unlock.. It works in tandem with the fingerprint sensor to provide authentication to unlock your phone using machine learning to recognize your face.
Pixel 7: Don’t discount the $599 Pixel 7. While it lacks the Pixel 7 Pro’s larger and higher-res screen, the 5x telephoto camera, and 12GB of RAM, the Pixel 7 with its 6.3-inch 90Hz OLED display ought to still provide an excellent value. Thanks to the Tensor G2 chipset, you’ll get flagship-level performance with a swath of AI and machine learning smarts. You get all of the same software goodness that the Pixel 7 Pro gets.
Google Pixel Watch: Google’s first smartwatch is finally official. The Pixel Watch is positioned as the ultimate accessory for Pixel phone users, bringing the best Google services to the Wear OS experience. Think: Gmail, Google Maps, Google Wallet, YouTube Music and more. But that’s only half the smartwatch’s story — fitness tracking is entirely backed by Fitbit. The circular Pixel Watch comes in three colors and one size, starting at $349 for the GPS-only version and $399 for the model with cellular support.
Google Pixel Tablet: The new Google Pixel tablet features a soft-touch design that’s comfortable to hold and Android 12L, which is designed to give you a better tablet experience. This means more split-screen apps and more apps that take advantage of a larger display. And because this slate is powered by a Tensor chip, you’ll be able to leverage many of the same photo and video features offered by the Pixel 7. The coolest part is the charging dock, which transforms the Pixel Tablet into a smart display with more powerful speakers.
How to watch the Pixel event
The Google October event will be livestreamed on October 6 at at 10 a.m. ET / 7 a.m. PT / 3 p.m. BST, and 1 a.m. AEDT on October 7.
The best place to watch it will likely be on YouTube (opens in new tab) — we’ve embedded the holding video for the event below. But do keep track of this live blog as we’ll bring you all the latest news as it happens as well as our thoughts on Google’s latest devices and smart software.

One of the more engaging demos during the Made by Google feature involved the company’s new Guided Frame feature. It’s an accessibility feature that lets people with poor vision take selfies by using voice and haptic feedback to help them position the camera. It’s ideal for people with vision issues who still want to snap a selfie.
Guided Frame is part of the Pixel 7 update. Google has split out the demo video from its Google I/O keynote, and now you can watch it to see Guided Frame in action.

Budget phone shoppers have quite the conundrum now that the Pixel 7 is here, and just $599. That’s closer to a midrange phone price than a flagship one. In fact, it’s awfully close to the $449 Google charges for the Pixel 6a.
The extra $150 buys you a new Tensor G2 chipset, as the Pixel 6a uses the original Tensor that arrived with the Pixel 6. The Pixel 7 also has a larger screen and more powerful main camera. But don’t just take this blog post’s word for it — a Pixel 7 vs. Pixel 6a comparison can give you the full rundown.

In case you missed it, the Pixel 7 has one big advantage over the Pixel 6, and that’s a brighter display. In fact, Google claims that the Pixel 7’s panel is 25% brighter when viewed outdoors. And that’s one of the few complaints we had about the Pixel 6; it could sometimes be hard to make out the display in direct sunlight.
With every phone we review we use a light meter to measure the nits of brightness on a given panel, so that’s one of the numbers I’ll be paying attention to most when we’re able to share our results. The Pixel 7 has a claimed max brightness of 1,000 nits of HDR content and 1,400 nits of peak brightness, so it looks promising at least.

You should definitely check out our Google Pixel Watch hands-on review to see if Google’s first smartwatch has been worth the wait. Editor Kate Kozuch says this is the Wear OS watch she’s been waiting for, and it’s easy to see why.
You get a sleek and minimalist design as well as full-fledged Fitbit fitness tracking on board. This includes the most accurate heart rate monitoring in a watch yet (according to Google) and access to a Daily Readiness Score, sleep tracking analysis and more via Fitbit Premium.
As you’d expect, the Pixel Watch also works seamlessly with with Google services, and you can use Google Assistant on your wrist. We’re just not fans of the chunky bezel and the band switching process.

One of the big questions you probably have about the Pixel 7 is “how is it different than the Pixel 6?” Our Google Pixel 7 vs Pixel 6 comparison breaks down all the upgrades so you can see if it’s worth the hype.
Here’s the short version. The Pixel 7 has a slightly smaller display but sports a sleeker design and powerful new G2 chip that enables all sorts of cool features. These include a faster Night Sight mode, Cinematic Blur for more compelling videos and Photo Unblur for crisper photos with less noise. You also get a brighter display. All for just $599.
See our comparison for all the details.

Phones editor Jordan Palmer spent the morning at Google’s store in Brooklyn to go hands-on with the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. His take? These are more significant updates than they might appear on the surface.

We’re going to see a lot of Google Pixel 7 preorder deals in the coming days, but AT&T is out of the gate with a good one — especially since it lets you pick up the Pixel 7 for free.
You’ll need to trade-in a device to take advantage of AT&T’s Pixel 7 offer, but assuming it fetches the maximum value, your trade-in rebate covers the cost of a Pixel 7. If you’re more interested in the Pixel 7 Pro, you can save up to $800 on that device.
AT&T requires you to sign up for a select unlimited plan. We can tell you where AT&T’s offerings rank among the best unlimited data plans.

Unlike Apple, which keeps some older models around at reduced prices when it rolls out new phones, Google drops its old devices like the proverbial hot potato. Visit the Google Store for the aftermath of today’s event, and you won’t find the Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro hanging around. It’s either Pixel 7 preorders or getting the Pixel 6a.
The presence of the Pixel 6a probably explains why the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are goners. There’s only a $150 price difference between the $449 Pixel 6a and the $599 Pixel 7. Google can’t really drop the price on its older Pixel 6 without cannibalizing Pixel 6a sales.
The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are likely still available in retail channels and phone carriers, but unless you see a significant discount, you’re better off focusing on the Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro. Google certainly is at this point.

Surprised by the Pixel Tablet’s appearance during Google’s presentation today? It shouldn’t have been a complete shock, as Google gave us a sneak peek at the Pixel Tablet back in May about the same time it was showing off the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

El Paso Is Busing More Immigrants Than Gov. Greg Abbott – MySA https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/el-paso-is-busing-more-immigrants-than-gov-greg-abbott-mysa/
Abbott has bused more than 3,000 immigrants to New York City and more than 900 to Chicago as of late August, according to Reuters. Abbott, who is running for reelection in November, has bused the immigrants as part of the campaign to bring attention to the U.S.-Mexico border. The number of immigrants Abbott has bused pales in comparison to El Paso, across the border from Juarez, Mexico.
El Paso has bused about 7,000 immigrants to New York City since late August and sent more than 1,800 to Chicago, Reuters reports. To be more exact, El Paso has bused 7,330 immigrants to New York City and 1,960 to Chicago from August 23 to October 5, according to data from a spokesperson with the city. That is a total of 9,290 across 196 charter buses.
O’Rourke has touted the line on the board and immigration while on the campaign trail as Texans remain divided on busing immigrants out of the state.

El Paso is currently led by Democratic Mayor Oscar Leeser and represented by Democratic members of the state and U.S. congress. El Paso is also hometown to Democratic gubernatorial candidate Beto O’Rourke. The El Paso native has called on President Joe Biden’s administration to end the Donald Trump-era COVID-19 health policy, Title 42, which has been used to expel over a million immigrants. He has also said that he is in support of Border Patrol.
Border Patrol has encountered nearly 154,000 Venezuelans along the U.S.-Mexico border in the first 11 months of this fiscal year, which is a 216% increase year-over-year, according to the Tribune.
El Paso’s Democratic leaders say that the immigrants are bused to New York City and Chicago voluntarily, a claim that has also been made by Abbott. New York officials told Reuters that coordination could be better between states, saying discussions should be had beforehand about the number of immigrants and if they have to be transported to New York.
Still, Democrat leaders have claimed that recent Republican-led efforts to transport immigrants out of Texas have used deceptive tactics. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar has opened an investigation into Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ flight that carried about 50 immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard.
Now, three immigrants who were flown to Martha’s Vineyard are suing DeSantis, saying that they didn’t know they were headed to the Massachusetts’ vacation town until they arrived. Another report alleges that the immigrants were provided fake flyers that promised housing, clothing, food, and work for the immigrants.
Judge Delays Twitter Trial Gives Musk Time To Seal Buyout 69News WFMZ-TV
Judge Delays Twitter Trial, Gives Musk Time To Seal Buyout – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/judge-delays-twitter-trial-gives-musk-time-to-seal-buyout-69news-wfmz-tv/
A judge has delayed a looming trial between Twitter and Elon Musk, giving Musk more time to close his $44 billion deal to buy the company after months spent fighting to get out of it.
Chancellor Kathaleen St. Jude McCormick, head of the Delaware Chancery Court, said Thursday that Musk has until Oct. 28 to close the deal. A trial set for Oct. 17 will happen in November if he doesn’t, she said.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story follows below.
Twitter is asking a Delaware court to proceed with an upcoming trial against Elon Musk, saying the billionaire refuses to accept the “contractual obligations” of his April agreement to buy the social media company for $44 billion.
Twitter attorneys sent a letter Thursday to the Delaware Chancery Court’s head judge, not long after Musk’s legal team asked her to call off the trial while he works on a renewed bid to buy the company.
Twitter disputed Musk’s claim that the San Francisco-based company is refusing to accept the new bid, which Musk told the company about earlier this week after trying to terminate the deal over the summer.
The company has been seeking a court order to force the completion of the merger and said it intends to close the deal at the agreed-upon price, but described Musk’s move to delay the trial as “an invitation to further mischief and delay.”
Twitter said Musk should be aiming to close the deal by Monday, ahead of a trial set to begin a week later on Oct. 17.
“But they aren’t. Instead they refuse to commit to any closing date,” said the letter from Twitter lawyer Kevin Shannon. “They ask for an open-ended out, at the expense of Twitter’s stockholders (who are owed $44 billion plus interest), all the while remaining free to change their minds again or to invent new grounds to avoid the contract.”
Brooklyn Law School professor Andrew Jennings said Twitter wants to be certain that the deal will get done and not allow “wiggle room for Musk to walk away again.”
Twitter apparently hasn’t got the certainty it wants.
“Otherwise, we would’ve seen a joint filing to the court on how the two sides want to proceed,” Jennings said. “As of right now, the trial train keeps rolling until both parties or the court apply the brakes.”
Musk’s attorneys said earlier Thursday that the trial should be adjourned to leave more time for Musk to secure the financing.
“Twitter will not take yes for an answer,” said the court filing signed by Musk attorney Edward Micheletti. “Astonishingly, they have insisted on proceeding with this litigation, recklessly putting the deal at risk and gambling with their stockholders’ interests.”
Eric Talley, a Columbia University law professor, tweeted Thursday that Twitter “is absolutely right not to take ‘yes’ for an answer, and everyone knows why. (They tried that in April and it didn’t go so well).” He added that Twitter would, however, take a “certified bank transfer” from Musk.
Musk attorneys argue that Twitter is disagreeing with the trial delay “based on the theoretical possibility” of Musk not coming up with the financing, which they call “baseless speculation.”
They said Musk’s financial backers “have indicated that they are prepared to honor their commitments” and are working to close the deal by Oct. 28, roughly a week after the trial was set to conclude.
Twitter’s shares fell $1.91, or 3.7%, to close at $49.39 on Thursday. It was the stock’s second day of declines following a surge of more than 22% on Tuesday after Musk made his renewed offer to buy the company.

Why Does Every Fitness Influencer Suddenly Hate Seed Oils? Morning Brew
Why Does Every Fitness Influencer Suddenly Hate Seed Oils? – Morning Brew https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/why-does-every-fitness-influencer-suddenly-hate-seed-oils-morning-brew/
Holding up the remains of a bullet-riddled plastic bottle of LouAna peanut oil, the shirtless, jacked influencer Brian “Liver King” Johnson makes a declaration. “We just saved lives,” he says. Moments before, he emptied two machine guns into various cooking oils: corn, peanut, canola, and more, which are all “dangerous” and “destructive” for human health, he claims. It’s a perfect distillation of the latest diet trend: avoiding seed oils.
“Seed oils” refers to a variety of popular cooking oils, including canola, soybean, sunflower, and corn oils. The public decrying of seed oils began as a fringe fitness forum quibble, dating to the paleo diet craze of the early 2000s. But it’s slowly leaked into mainstream conversations on TikTok and even Joe Rogan’s podcast, where the host recently called cooking with grapeseed oil a “crime against nature.” The common kitchen ingredient is now vilified as “industrial,” and its detractors have linked it to everything from inflammation to sunburns and Alzheimer’s disease, to the frustration of some health and nutrition experts.
Some experts believe the anti-seed oil trend is sticking because it often feeds into larger conspiracy theories, in which powerful corporate interests have pushed a poison that is contributing to a host of physical ailments. Most medical organizations actually recommend replacing foods with high saturated contents, like butter and ghee, with polyunsaturated fats (PUFAs), which include seed oils. But for the conspiratorially minded, skeptical of any large institution, medical consensus can also be proof that seed oils should be avoided at all costs. Or maybe even shot with a gun. (Liver King isn’t alone in this endeavor: Tucker Carlson’s The End of Men documentary also features a shirtless man firing rounds into a lineup of canola oil.)
That’s how “you get these very strange bedfellows,” Tim Caulfield, health law professor at the University of Alberta, said. Contrarians of various stripes, from anti-vaxxers to bitcoin enthusiasts, share a suspicion of industrial seed oils, as they are often referred to, with a derogatory emphasis on industrial. And an industry is growing to meet the rising demand for seed-oil-free products: Businesses are capitalizing on this new trend, addressing a market that contains both off-the-grid influencers and HODLers who yearn for a lifestyle untouched by corporate interests. It’s a trend that’s been bubbling in the background for decades, and seed oils are just the latest enemy.
The origin of the disdain for seed oil (also known under the broad moniker of “vegetable oil”) dates to the paleo diet of the early 2000s. The lifestyle was pioneered by athlete and best-selling author, Mark Sisson. In his 2009 book The Primal Blueprint, Sisson championed a “back to the beginning” approach to eating, focused on foods that would’ve been available to cavemen from the Stone Age, aka the Paleolithic “paleo” diet. A component of this “primal” way of living, according to Sisson, is to “avoid poisonous things,” including vegetable or seed oils. The most insidious part of the standard American diet, he said, is “industrial seed oils.” Sission’s diet advice became wildly popular in the early 2010s, when it seemed like every fitness-minded celeb jumped aboard the paleo train, including Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, actor and podcaster Matthew McConaughey, and (perhaps less obviously) former Florida Governor Jeb Bush.
In 2015, Sisson co-founded Primal Nutrition, a paleo-friendly food company that offered seed-oil-free products, including mayonnaise, buffalo sauce, and ranch dressing all made with avocado oil. Just a few years later, Kraft Heinz bought the company for $200 million dollars. Sission planted the seed (sorry) for a changing food market, one that catered to niche diets, where fresh food rules and processed foods—including seed oils—were deemed unhealthy.
The market for a primal lifestyle is growing and easy to identify: Just look for names that conjure up prehistoric visions. Amy Moring is the co-founder of Hunter & Gather, a UK-based wellness company that she started with her partner, Jeff Webster. The company’s most popular product is an avocado oil-based mayonnaise, which they launched in 2017. They’ve since expanded their offerings to over 30 different products—without seed or vegetable oils, refined sugar, or grains—and they sell their product on Amazon both in the UK and abroad.
Like many who reject seed oils and other processed foods, both Moring and Webster claim that eliminating seed oils, along with grains and processed foods, have eased health problems. It’s a common refrain among those who have eliminated seed oils from their diet, including the colorful Liver King. The global market for paleo foods is expected to exceed $12 billion in five years.
On this side of the pond, there’s Ancient Crunch, the company started by entrepreneur and health influencer Steven Arena. The glamorous Instagram feed for MASA, a brand under Ancient Crunch, looks more like a spread of vintage Vogue covers than advertisements for the product: tortilla chips fried in rendered beef fat.
Arena’s startup story sounds a lot like Moring and Webster’s. He launched his company after he stopped eating tortilla chips because of the “cheap processed oils,” which he said always made him sick. He wanted an option that used beef tallow as the fat to fry the chips (tallow has become an increasingly popular alternative to seed oil, with some companies offering tallow-based sunscreens and lip balms), with nixtamalized corn—a generations-old process used to make corn digestible—and his friends asked why he just didn’t make it himself. Thus, MASA was born, Arena said.
Arena’s customers are an amalgamation of several different groups, he said. There are macro-counting CrossFitters, moms looking for snack options for kids, and biohackers who use devices like Oura rings, Fitbits, and Whoop bands to keep constant tabs on their health. These customers tend to be people “who make decisions for health over enjoyment,” he said. Many of the ancestral-style diets are inconvenient, Arena noted, as they omit ubiquitous ingredients, such as seed oils, or in the case of keto, most carbohydrates. But his product is meant for people who want to make convenient but healthy choices.
“It’s gonna be harder for you to accept that a problem exists if there’s no easy solution to that problem,” Arena said. For those who’ve sworn off both seed oils and fiat currency, MASA also accepts bitcoin.

As recently as three years ago, Arena said he couldn’t remember hearing the term “seed oils.” Now, a “whole host of influencers,” including Arena, focus on them almost exclusively. Their efforts seem to be working, with “seed oil” making its way to headlines in publications ranging from The American Conservative to Goop to VICE.
Nutrition experts understand why the anti-seed oil movement has taken off, even if they don’t necessarily agree with it. A shiny TikTok-friendly anecdote, complete with before and after photos, is much sexier than evidence-based medicine.
“Anecdotes are personalized and trigger emotional reaction,” Dr. Danielle Belardo, preventative cardiologist and host of Wellness: Fact vs. Fiction, said.
As a millennial in the healthcare space, Belardo is trying her hardest to make rigorous scientific evidence cool, she told Morning Brew. But it’s not easy, especially in a social media landscape where contrarian claims about diets and their effectiveness are easy to access and engineered to spread. It’s much harder to make evidence-based medicine go viral.
The claims made by anti-seed oil advocates, Belardo said, which often include links to inflammation, are “just not based on any scientific evidence whatsoever.” In fact, she said, the recommendation to replace seed oils with high-saturated fat products like butter and ghee is the exact opposite of what organizations like the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology recommend.
“If someone’s making recommendations that go against expert scientific consensus, there’s usually an ulterior motive there,” Belardo said.
Seed oils are a charged topic, and not just for normies on Fitness TikTok, but for academics, too. Kevin Klatt, a registered dietician and researcher at UC Berkeley, takes the side that seed oils are “probably not a problem,” and “might even have health benefits.” But he also offered a caveat: “But you have to give a little bit of credence to the residual doubt and reason that some people have different opinions to not burn bridges in the field.”
Though Klatt does not seem particularly worried about seed oils, he stresses that some of the claims made by anti-seed oil warriors go all the way back to academic concerns from the 1970s. But the “scam of it all,” Klatt said, is that “nobody fucking eats seed oil” by the spoonful. Instead, when people cut out seed oils, they’re often cutting out fried foods and commercially baked goods, which have their own impacts on health.
Klatt noted that the rejection of seed oils cuts across demographics, including gender. Nutrition trends are typically very gendered, he said, but seed oil discourse is “crosscutting,” because it’s been attached to issues ranging from “obesity to autoimmune diseases to neurodegenerative diseases,” and has found proponents in both strictly carnivorous and plant-based communities.
Like a lot of popular diets, the rejection of seed oils is built on a kernel of truth. Take, for example, “gut health,” a phrase that only recently entered the lexicon. While there is critical work occurring in this field, ...

FOX SPORTS FILMS ANNOUNCES NEW IMMERSIVE HIP HOP DOCUMENTARY “JACKIE ROBINSON: GET TO THE BAG” SPOTLIGHTING THE REMARKABLE CAREER OF JACKIE ROBINSON BEYOND BASEBALL PREMIERING WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 12 ON FS1
Executive Produced by Two-Time World Series Champion and Six-Time All-Star Mookie Betts, Co-Produced by Propagate and MLB, and Directed by Victorious De Costa
Film, Narrated Through the Lyrical Storytelling of Brooklyn-Based Rapper Skyzoo
First-look Tease Unveiled Today
LOS ANGELES – FOX Sports Films announced today the new immersive hip-hop documentary JACKIE ROBINSON: GET TO THE BAG, spotlighting the remarkable career of Jackie Robinson beyond baseball. The film blends the lyrical narrative of Brooklyn-based rapper Skyzoo and the voices of multiple generations to celebrate Robinson’s extraordinary life and legacy, shedding new light on the Hall of Famer’s journey from the baseball diamond to prominence in corporate America. Set to premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 12 on FS1, following the network’s live Major League Baseball (MLB) Postseason coverage, the film is executive produced by two-time World Series champion and six-time All-Star Mookie Betts, co-produced by Propagate, MLB, and directed by Victorious De Costa (“Yusuf Hawkins: Storm Over Brooklyn”).
“FOX Sports is honored to partner with Mookie, Victorious, and the producing team at Propagate to present Jackie Robinson’s inspiring story like we’ve never seen before through a creative hip-hop lens,” said Barry Nugent, Vice President, Development and Original Programming, FOX Sports. “The film is a musical celebration of Jackie’s life and legacy on and off the field and the powerful impact his story has on a new generation of fans.”
“Oftentimes we focus on the accolades of what players do on the field or courts, when the true essence of who we are, is our contribution to building and enriching our communities and those within it,” said Betts. “We’ve heard the stories of Mr. Jackie Robinson’s activism and contribution to baseball, but now I am honored to help tell the story of Jackie Robinson, the entrepreneur through this film.”
JACKIE ROBINSON: GET TO THE BAG features memorable, archival footage interwoven through a hip-hop narrative, along with conversational interviews with the newest generation of fans and future MLB luminaries, to capture the story of Robinson through the eyes of America’s youth. The film also features interviews with Betts, Candice Wiggins, Alex Rodriguez, Dr. Ilyasah Shabazz as well as award-winning journalist Angelika Beener and acclaimed historian Peter Dreier, along with commentary from current MLB superstars. Through original lyrics and beats, Skyzoo brings the Jackie Robinson story to life in a unique presentation that aims to educate and inspire the next generation through Robinson’s legacy. Drawing on his own inspiration from Robinson, Skyzoo also introduces viewers to his childhood home in the Ebbets Field Apartments Complex, the former site of the iconic Brooklyn Dodgers’ Ebbets Field. The same grounds where Skyzoo began his foray into writing music is where Robinson first stepped up to the plate as the first African American player in the modern-era of MLB.
The film is not only a celebration of baseball, but an ode to Robinson’s impactful career and racial activism that transcended beyond the sport. Robinson was a pioneer in sports and also a trailblazer for black athletes to become business moguls with power and influence. A tale of courage and determination, the film tells the story of Robinson most people don’t know: his story beyond baseball. JACKIE ROBINSON: GET TO THE BAG will peel back the layers on Robinson’s own self-identity and personal growth through the many stages of his professional career, including his unexpected retirement from baseball and parting with the sport, to his entrance into the workforce where he established success as both an entrepreneur and an advocate for the civil rights movement. 75 years after Robinson first stepped out onto Ebbets Field, JACKIE ROBINSON: GET TO THE BAG will remind viewers that the Jackie Robinson story is also America’s story.
Betts himself is a vocal activist for the inclusion of Black Americans in baseball on and off the field. For example, during batting practice at the 2022 MLB All-Star Game, he donned a t-shirt emblazoned with the message, “We need more Black people at the stadium.” Betts later led a tribute to Robinson’s widow, Rachel Robinson, in honor of her 100th birthday during the pregame ceremony of the Midsummer Classic.
“While JACKIE ROBINSON: GET TO THE BAG taps into the profound mark his athleticism left on baseball, I wanted to draw attention to Jackie’s financial success as a businessman following his sports career,” said De Costa. “The film’s title serves as a double entendre, signifying how Robinson not only got to the bag on the field, but also the money bag, celebrating his entrepreneurship and socioeconomic influence.”
JACKIE ROBINSON: GET TO THE BAG is produced by Betts’ media company, One Media/Marketing Group (OMG), along with Propagate (“Untold”, “Hillary”, “LFG”). The film’s executive producers are Betts, Cam Lewis, Jeff Mason and Omar Bradford of OMG and Ben Silverman, Howard Owens and Drew Buckley of Propagate. Jack Katkavich serves as co-executive producer. The documentary is an extension of the collaboration between Betts’ OMG and Propagate following their production deal announced earlier this year and is the first project to greenlight.

Google Pixel Event — Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, Pixel Watch And Pixel Tablet Launch – Tom’s Guide https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/google-pixel-event-pixel-7-pixel-7-pro-pixel-watch-and-pixel-tablet-launch-toms-guide/

Ukrainian officials have asked for a weapon that can strike targets 190 miles away. But the Pentagon — wary of widening the war — says the ones it has provided are powerful enough.

Oct. 6, 2022, 5:50 p.m. ET
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Pentagon officials have sent the Ukrainian military an array of equipment totaling billions of dollars. But one powerful weapon, called the Army Tactical Missile System, has become part of a debate about the limits of U.S. support for its ally.
The long-range missile — known as ATACMS and pronounced like “attack ’ems” — can strike targets 190 miles away with a warhead containing about 375 pounds of explosives. It can be fired from the HIMARS mobile launchers that the United States has provided Ukraine, as well as from older M270 launchers sent from Britain and Germany.
Ukrainian officials say the missile could help them regain Crimea, a part of the country that Russia seized in 2014. But Pentagon officials insist they are already giving Ukraine the weapons it most needs: Guided Multiple Launch Rocket Systems, or GMLRS.
And this week, a senior Pentagon official said that the guided rockets, which the United States has sent Ukrainian forces by the thousands, can reach most of their targets, even in Crimea.
Why has this weapon been such a sensitive issue?
It comes down to this: concern in the White House that Ukraine could use the long-range missile to strike targets deep inside Russia, and that President Vladimir V. Putin might respond by escalating the war, possibly by invading a neighboring NATO country.
“We’re trying to avoid World War III,” President Biden has said.
But President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine says the weapon is crucial to his country’s ability to launch a wider counteroffensive after its recent advances. He has also insisted that he has no plans to strike Russian cities or target civilians.
What is this thing?
The missile was developed in the 1980s to destroy high-value Soviet targets deep behind enemy lines. It was built as a rare guided weapon at a time when the United States mainly relied on “dumb bombs” and other unguided munitions for attacking targets on the ground.
A spokeswoman for Lockheed Martin said that the company has built 60,000 GMLRS and 4,000 ATACMS to date, some of which have been sold to foreign allies. A senior defense official told The New York Times that the United States can more easily part with the less expensive guided rockets, given that the Pentagon’s tactical missiles are all reserved for top secret war plans in places like the Korean Peninsula.
Because ATACMS is the U.S. Army’s longest-range surface-fired weapon, it has traditionally been used in missions approved by three-star generals for the highest-priority targets on a battlefield. Lower-ranking officers are allowed to launch guided rockets as needed in combat.
What was ATACMS built for?
The missile was originally designed to destroy enemy surface-to-air missile defense weapons by blanketing them with hundreds of individual bomblets.
Today, the Pentagon has two versions of the ATACMS in its inventory — the cluster weapon and one that carries a single explosive charge.
Because of the high dud rate of the bomblets carried in the cluster weapon version, the Pentagon would probably provide allies with only the variant containing a single high-explosive charge.
ATACMS is also the Army’s oldest surface-launched missile currently in service, and a prototype of its replacement is being test-fired at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. That weapon, called the Precision Strike Missile, will fly to ranges previously barred by the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.
Since the Trump administration chose to exit that pact in early 2019, the Pentagon has accelerated development of the Precision Strike Missile, which is smaller and can fly much farther than its predecessor. Two can fit into the same size container that carries a single tactical missile.
Has the U.S. used them in combat?
Yes. The U.S. military fired around 30 ATACMS in 1991 during Operation Desert Storm, according to government records. They were used to strike Iraq’s medium-range ballistic missile launchers and surface-to-air missile sites.
Those first-generation cluster munition versions could fly about 100 miles. Once over their targets, they released 950 bomblets.

Why does Ukraine want it?
One word: range. And given that it is the Army’s longest-range ground-fired missile, and that the United States does not have very many of them, providing it to Ukraine could be seen as a sign of America’s commitment to Kyiv.
But there are trade-offs in terms of capabilities.
Compared with the GMLRS, the version of the ATACMS that Ukraine wants carries an explosive warhead that is about 50 percent larger and can strike targets more than three times as far.
The tactical missile is much larger though, about 13 feet long and 2 feet wide, and weighs about 3,000 pounds. As a result, a mobile launcher like the M142 HIMARS can carry six guided rockets but only one tactical missile at a time.
Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said the Ukrainians need the guided rockets more than they need to be able to attack at longer ranges.
“Volume matters,” General Milley told reporters in July. He said that both weapons were “very effective,” but that right now the GMLRS were “really fulfilling their need.”

1. The new Pixel 7, 7 Pro and Pixel Watch are here
Finally, after months of drumming up excitement, Google has announced the new Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro flagship phones. They come with a massive bump in software capabilities thanks to the Google Tensor G2 chip. The Pixel Watch has also finally landed, as has a tablet that looks like the company’s Nest Hub. Here are all of the big announcements from this morning’s Made By Google event.
2. Man arrested over Optus data SMS scam
Yesterday afternoon, the AFP announced that a 19-year-old man from Sydney had been charged for allegedly attempting to misuse stolen Optus customer data in a text message blackmail scam. The AFP said an investigation was sparked when they became aware of a number of text messages demanding some Optus customers transfer $2,000 to a bank account or face their personal information being used for financial crimes. He’s due to face court October 27.
3. Amendments to the telco act specifically for data breaches
Still on the Optus data breach and the federal government has prepared amendments to the Telecommunications Regulations 2021 Act in a move it said will better protect Australians. The amendments would allow Optus and other telcos to better coordinate with financial institutions and governments to detect and mitigate the risks of cybersecurity incidents, frauds, scams and other malicious cyber activities. This means firms like banks and government entities would have driver’s licence, Medicare and passport numbers shared with them in the event of a data breach.
4. Aussies are buying into the EV craze
The FCAI, the peak body for Australia’s automotive industry, yesterday reported that a total of 93,555 vehicles were sold in September – 7,247 of them were EVs. The organisation reckons that the number of battery electric vehicles sold in September signalled that a growing number of Australians were committed to decarbonising their transport choices. Toyota led the market with a total of 14,852 vehicles sold during the month – the Hi-Lux accounted for 5,170 of them. But on the EV side, 4,359 Tesla Model Y cars found homes in September.

5. Boston Dynamics promises not to make a Robocop
Boston Dynamics, the DARPA-backed robotics company known for uncomfortable videos where nearly 91 kg humanoid robots perform backflips, uncomfortable dances and various forms of horrifyingly aggressive parkour, says it isn’t interested in weaponising its robots. In an open letter this week, Boston Dynamics Dynamics joined five other robotics makers in a pledge not to weaponise their advanced-mobility, general-purpose robots, or the software that makes them tick. Well, there ya go.

LULAC’s Domingo Garcia speaks to reporters at a press conference in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 5.
The League of United Latin American Citizens is doubling its reward to anyone who helps track down the woman who allegedly recruited migrants onto flights from San Antonio to Martha’s Vineyard.
Domingo Garcia, national president of the Latinx advocacy group, told reporters during a Wednesday press conference that it’s raising boosting its cash offer for information that leads to the woman to $10,000 from $5,000.
Earlier this week, the New York Times identified the mystery woman as San Antonio native Perla Huerta, a former army medic. Although the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t confirmed Huerta as a suspect, sources familiar with the investigation told the Express-News she is a person of interest.
In addition to boosting its reward, LULAC on Wednesday filed a complaint with the Department of Justice, demanding that Attorney General Merrick Garland open a criminal investigation into Huerta along with Florida Gov. DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
LULAC also set up a tip line — (818) 689-9991 — for people to provide information on Huerta.
“It’s time Perla Huerta goes before a grand jury and answers who hired her, who paid her and what was her purpose of her mission,” Garcia said at the press conference.
Last month, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar launched an investigation into the Martha’s Vineyard flights, which were arranged by DeSantis. Salazar said the migrants were lured onto the planes under “false pretenses” that may have broken the law. Some of the stranded migrants told reporters they were promised jobs and lodging.
DeSantis reportedly arranged the flights after making contact with Texas’ Abbott, a fellow Republican. Abbott has made anti-immigrant rhetoric a key part of his reelection campaign and chartered numerous buses to ship migrants out of the state.
Garcia said a federal investigation into the flights is necessary, adding that the “political stunt” misused Florida taxpayer money, involved human trafficking and violated several immigration laws.
According to an investigation by Express-News, Perla’s last known residence was a condo in Tampa.
“Texas Governors Greg Abbott and Florida Governors Ron DeSantis are the real shot callers in this disgusting exploitation of innocent human beings,” Garcia said in a statement. “LULAC urges the U.S. Department of Justice to conduct a rigorous and transparent investigation into these elected officials’ potential civil and criminal violations.”

Killed On Vacation: NAACP Leader Shot In Turks And Caicos Travel Noire
Killed On Vacation: NAACP Leader Shot In Turks And Caicos – Travel Noire https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/killed-on-vacation-naacp-leader-shot-in-turks-and-caicos-travel-noire/
Kent Carter, of the Arlington County NAACP was killed on vacation while riding in a shuttle van back to his hotel. Police say a gang of men started shooting at the vehicle, which murdered Carter and injured another passenger in the van.
What happened:
“Just a really great, standup guy, you know? One of the best neighbors you could have,” stated Robert York to FOX 5. York was a neighbor to Carter and couldn’t believe the news of what happened. “He and his family, just really great neighbors. So this is just incredibly sad news,” York said.
“These criminals began to indiscriminately shoot into the vehicle,” said Trevor Botting, police commissioner in Turks and Caicos. Botting states the van Carter was riding in was ambushed by gunmen. Murdering Carter and injuring a staff member.
The aftermath:
After the incident, police found the vehicle the gunmen were in and engaged in a shootout. The gunmen had automatic weapons and police ended up killing one of the shooters.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family of those who were murdered,” Botting said.
Carter spent time in executive leadership at the NAACP of Arlington County and was on the county’s police practices working group.
A great loss to the community:
Carter was in executive leadership at the NAACP and was also apart of Arlington County’s police practices working group. He was also a realtor in the community.
“I know that he has a young daughter, and I have a kiddo that lives with me as well, and we definitely bonded around. We got to work around school pickup, we got to work around homework time, things like that, as I was buying the house, and he was just so great about that,” said Rachel Saathoff, who was a client of Carter.
The investigation:
The authorities in Turks and Caicos are still searching for answers and looking for the rest of the gunmen involved.
Botting says the shooting was tied to the drug trade in Turks and Caicos, inspired by turf wars and revenge.
Julius Spain, Senior President of the NAACP Arlington told FOX 5, “Mr. Carter was not only a friend but a true champion of civil rights and social justice.” Spain says he knew Carter for more than ten years and said he was “a gentleman with a gentle heart.”
Carter’s girlfriend who was also in the vehicle spoke with Spain. She said they were headed back to the hotel after the beach. Carter, who is a veteran and former special agent, used his body to shield her from the gunfire.

Healthy Rowan Coalition Receives NC GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Child Health Recognition Award – WBTV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/healthy-rowan-coalition-receives-nc-glaxosmithkline-foundation-child-health-recognition-award-wbtv/
ROWAN COUNTY N.C. (WBTV) – The North Carolina GlaxoSmithKline Foundation Child Health Recognition Awards program honored the Rowan County Health Department (RCHD) for their partnership with Main Street Marketplace in China Grove to combat childhood obesity and nutrition insecurity through a pilot mobile food pharmacy program. The RCHD was one of three health departments in the State of North Carolina to receive this award.
Overweight and obese children are more likely to continue to be overweight into adulthood and develop other conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. The challenge arises when families experience economic hardships that can lead to hunger. They may need to choose cheaper, less healthy foods to pay outstanding medical bills, rent, or transportation needs. More than 50% of Rowan County children are living in lower-income homes, putting them at risk for nutrition insecurity and becoming overweight or obese.
Through the Health Department, the Healthy Rowan Coalition has identified nutrition insecurity as a priority area in addressing the rise in chronic disease. It’s not just about food, it is about the right food and engaging the entire family. Nutrition insecurity is the lack of food, specifically healthy food such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and nuts, most likely due to economic hardship and knowledge around healthy eating. “Children are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables if their family members are preparing and eating them at home. The same goes for most health behaviors,” says Jenn West, Healthy Rowan Lifestyle Medicine Manager.
“When designing the food pharmacy pilot program, it was extremely important to identify the right organization to take the lead. Main Street Marketplace is that organization,” says Courtney Meece, Rowan County Health Department Community Health Director.
Main Street Marketplace, a Healthy Rowan Coalition member organization and pillar in the community addressing the intersection of hunger, health, and poverty took on the project with great enthusiasm. Main Street Marketplace Director, Hope Oliphant, had a vision as she worked with board and community members to transition from a food pantry to a one of kind grocery store using a sliding scale-based model.
“Everyone is welcome to shop the market in a dignified way regardless of income. The vision of our organization is to create a healthier and stronger community through relationships, education, and access to resources, fostering long-term impact. This emphasizes the importance of increasing access to healthier foods for all residents. The food pharmacy is allowing us to expand that vision through an innovate, holistic model in partnership with local healthcare facilities, the health department and Healthy Rowan Coalition, the Cooperative Extension, the YMCA and Pedal Factory. Food Lion has also provided a monetary donation to the food pharmacy to bring more fresh produce into the homes of our families.”
Families referred to the Mobile Food Pharmacy fill their prescription one time per week by pre-ordering (3) meal kits of their choice. Meal kits include healthy recipes along with ingredients to make those recipes. Patients pay $30 at the time of pick-up; SNAP/EBT is accepted. On average, patients in this pilot program will save 55% on meal kits compared to other local grocery stores. Taste testing opportunities for seasonal meal kit recipes are offered at each food pharmacy pick-up and include items such as lentil vegetable soup, taco salad, and blueberry spinach smoothies.
Patients are encouraged to attend the Living Healthy Program, a 6-week chronic disease self-management program that focuses on lifestyle education and self-care activities. Currently, the pilot serves 10 families, all of whom, are working with food pharmacy staff to refine recipes, the delivery model, and gain insight into the health improvements made.
Brianna Caraccio, Main Street Marketplace’s Food Pharmacy & Market Manager, shared how grateful she was to receive positive feedback from participants about the program. She shared, “One couple told us how the food pharmacy program has given them a new sense of joy within their marriage because they are now cooking together and have something to look forward to each week. Another single mom of 3 boys shared how much the program helped her provide healthy meals for her kids without having to worry about going shopping after a long day of working.”

A Houston-born COVID-19 vaccine has gotten the go-ahead to be produced and distributed in Indonesia.
PT Bio Farma, which oversees government-owned pharmaceutical manufacturers in Indonesia, says it’s prepared to make 20 million doses of the IndoVac COVID-19 vaccine this year and 100 million doses a year by 2024. This comes after the vaccine received authorization from the Indonesian Food and Drug Authority for emergency use in adults.
With more than 275 million residents, Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country.
IndoVac was created by the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and Baylor College of Medicine. Drs. Peter Hotez and Maria Elena Bottazzi lead the vaccine project. Bio Farma is licensing IndoVac from BCM Ventures, the commercial group at the Baylor College of Medicine.
“Access to vaccines in the developing world is critical to the eradication of this virus,” Hotez, co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine, says in a news release.
Aside from distributing the vaccine in Indonesia, Bio Farma plans to introduce it to various international markets.
“The need for a safe, effective, low-cost vaccine for middle- to low-income countries is central to the world’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic,” says Bottazzi, co-director of the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development and associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor.
“Without widespread inoculation of populations in the developing world, which must include safe, effective booster doses, additional [COVID-19] variants will develop, hindering the progress achieved by currently available vaccines in the United States and other Western countries.”
Bio Farma says it has completed Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials for IndoVac and is wrapping up a Phase 3 trial.
IndoVac is a version of the patent-free, low-cost Corbevax vaccine, developed in Houston and dubbed “The World’s COVID-19 Vaccine.” The vaccine formula can be licensed by a vaccine producer in any low- or middle-income country, which then can take ownership of it, produce it, name it, and work with government officials to distribute it, Hotez told The Texas Tribune in February.
Among donors that have pitched in money for development of the vaccine are the Houston-based MD Anderson and John S. Dunn foundations, the San Antonio-based Kleberg Foundation, and Austin-based Tito’s Vodka.
“During 2022, we hope to partner with the World Health Organization and other United Nations agencies to vaccinate the world. We believe that global vaccine equity is finally at hand and that it is the only thing that can bring the COVID pandemic to an end,” Hotez and Bottazzi wrote in a December 2021 article for Scientific American.
