Black Adam Star Quintessa Swindell Talks Playing Cyclone – Entertainment Weekly News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/black-adam-star-quintessa-swindell-talks-playing-cyclone-entertainment-weekly-news/ Breaking Big: The 25-year-old Euphoria actor suits up alongside Dwayne Johnson, Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, and Pierce Brosnan in DC’s latest superhero epic. coggan Superhero training is nothing new. If you’re an actor and you get cast to play a comic-book hero, you’re probably committing to a fair amount of gym time. Sometimes that can mean hitting the weights or practicing the perfect punch; other times, you have to learn how to mimic flight by dangling in a harness, dozens of feet off the ground. But when Quintessa Swindell signed on to Black Adam, a decidedly more artistic approach was taken. Swindell, who uses they/them pronouns, co-stars as Maxine Hunkel, a.k.a. Cyclone, and is the first nonbinary actor who identifies as gender-nonconforming to play a superhero in the DCEU. Cyclone is a brilliant young heroine with the ability to manipulate the wind — a simple wave of her arms can unleash a tornado. To prepare for the role, Swindell studied with expert dancers and researched early modern dance pioneers like Loie Fuller and Isadora Duncan, known for their elegant, swirling motions. On set, Swindell would play music to help them get into character, and the result is a uniquely graceful hero who moves unlike any other superhero on screen. “It became a very personal experience,” Swindell, 25, says. “I feel like when you’re moving your body, you start to feel yourself in different ways, and you want to accentuate different things. Through movement, there’s an emotional release. So when I was training, I became more comfortable in my body, and really empowered in a way that I honestly didn’t think would happen.” Black Adam Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone in ‘Black Adam’ | Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures Warner Bros.’ Black Adam (out Oct. 21) is titled after Dwayne Johnson’s antihero, an all-powerful figure from DC Comics lore. But the film also marks the big-screen debut of the Justice Society of America, a legendary DC super-squad that faces off against the brawny Adam. Some of the Justice Society members are already experienced heroes, including Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate and Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman. Others are new recruits, and Swindell’s Cyclone joins the team at the same time as fellow newbie Atom Smasher (To All the Boys’ Noah Centineo). Swindell is also new to the superhero game, not unlike the character they play on-screen. After studying theater, the Virginia-born actor broke out in 2019 with roles on HBO’s hit Euphoria and the Netflix teen drama Trinkets. But Black Adam is their biggest role yet. Swindell says they wanted to embrace that newness on set and use their own wide-eyed wonder to inform how they approached Maxine.   “Very rarely have I seen a role that paints a young girl in a way that gives her the ability to live authentically and truthfully in her weirdness,” Swindell explains. “She’s on the precipice of embracing her sense of self and discovering her power.” Black Adam Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone in ‘Black Adam’ | Credit: Warner Bros. Pictures Swindell is a longtime, self-professed DC Comics fan, and in some ways, Black Adam has a lot in common with your traditional superhero fare: There are cool gadgets and magical MacGuffins and more than a few jaw-dropping fight scenes. (Cyclone’s powers are particularly gorgeous on screen, manifesting as churning Technicolor hurricanes.) But the film, set in the fictional Middle Eastern nation of Kahndaq, also boasts an unexpected moral ambiguity, probing questions about who gets to be a hero — and what heroism actually entails. “Especially now, when we reframe our thoughts about imperialism, globalization, and who has the power in a society,” Swindell adds, ‘those are concepts that are so timely, and I’m thankful that Black Adam talks about them, and promotes that conversation. I hope that when people go, they’re like, ‘Well, what would you have done? What do you signify as justice or injustice, and how does that fluctuate culture to culture?’ That’s what I love about the film.” Despite these occasionally weighty themes, Swindell says their main goal was to keep things light on set — as breezy and fluid as Maxine’s powers.   “The biggest challenge was getting out of my head and letting go and being loose,” they add. “For me, sometimes I tend to keep things really tight, and with Cyclone, I just wanted to release and be as present as I possibly could. And just have fun.” Related content:

Bitcoin And Jobs: US Employment Openings Drop – Bad News For Crypto? – Bitcoinist https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/bitcoin-and-jobs-us-employment-openings-drop-bad-news-for-crypto-bitcoinist/ There have been fewer job openings in the United States lately and this may, one way or another, have an impact on Bitcoin and the broader crypto market. The recent data on unemployment in the US shows that the labor market is still predominantly strong at 3.8%. However, the creation of new jobs is seen to drop by as much as 6.4%; with social assistance and healthcare having very low vacancies to date. Labor demand is seen to capsize and has in fact nosedived to 1.9%. On the other hand, the creation of new jobs in the US has been observed to spike last month by 209,000 as well as around 186,000 jobs created or a surge of 13%. In addition, the annual pay for workers has also tipped by 7.8% for those who stayed at their present jobs, while the pay for those who change jobs increased immensely by 15.8%. With these developments, the economy is showing no signs of slowing down contrary to what analysts say. Rise In Unemployment: Does It Affect Bitcoin? Despite the GDP being in the red for both Q1 and Q2, the US labor market is seen to flourish. But, the reduction in the number of job openings is a red flag that the US economy could be seeing a potential rise in unemployment cases in the next couple of months. Bitcoin and other crypto could be affected by this trend – as they are each time the stock market plunges, although that’s another story. But, come to think of it, there could be some relation in there somewhere. When this happens, when jobs become scarce, people will have less spending power. As a result, businesses will experience a downturn as the demand for products decreases as well. Image: GOBankingRates Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve has just hiked interest rates in an effort to slow down inflation to at least 2%. With that being said, the labor market is also constricted as of press time. Crypto immediately felt the effect following the Fed’s rate increase. So, there’s that correlation. With people losing jobs, the economy could crash which means economic activities are derailed. When this happens, business retailers would rather hold on to their cash than invest in the markets – or they would opt to invest in extremely volatile instruments such as Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. S&P 500 To Impact Crypto And Equity Markets The plunge in the creation of new jobs is seen to be also largely connected to the price of the S&P 500. According to the charts, S&P 500 impacts new job openings which were seen in 2003, 2009, and also in 2020. It seems that S&P 500 is experiencing a bearish movement with the sudden decline in job openings. In fact, even the inflation rate is swishing nowhere near the central bank’s target. The Fed is tightening the reins on its monetary policy so it looks like unemployment will continue to climb in the coming days. Bitcoin price is also closely linked to S&P 500. The charts show that both BTC and SPX have dropped at the same time as seen on December 18 and also in March 2020. It seems that both the crypto and equity markets could nosedive in the coming days. 100 Days Post-Roe: At Least 66 Clinics Across 15 US States Have Stopped Offering Abortion Care – Guttmacher Institute https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/100-days-post-roe-at-least-66-clinics-across-15-us-states-have-stopped-offering-abortion-care-guttmacher-institute/ October 2, 2022 marked 100 days since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, a decision that has resulted in states across the nation severely restricting access to abortion. New Guttmacher research found that 100 days after the June 24 Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, 66 clinics across 15 states have been forced to stop offering abortions. Prior to June 24, these 15 states had a total of 79 clinics that provided abortion care. As of October 2, that number had dropped to 13, and all of them are located in Georgia. This means there are no providers currently offering abortions in 14 of the 15 states. Among the 66 clinics where abortion is no longer available, 40 are still offering services other than abortion, while 26 have shut down entirely. Our analysis, which builds on research we conducted 30 days after Roe fell, focuses on the 15 states that were enforcing either total or six-week abortion bans as of October 2. While most of these bans include very limited circumstances when an abortion may be allowed, those exceptions are designed to be difficult to navigate and are often unusable in practice. States Where Clinics Stopped Offering Abortions or Closed Entirely In the 13 states that had implemented total abortion bans as of October 2, all clinics were forced to stop offering abortions. In the other two states, Wisconsin and Georgia, the situation is precarious. Clinics in Wisconsin have faced legal uncertainty around the state’s pre-Roe total abortion ban, leading providers in that state to stop offering abortions out of fear of future prosecution. In Georgia, which is enforcing a ban on abortion starting at six weeks of pregnancy, clinics have been affected by the shortened timeframe to offer abortion services. At the 40 clinics that have remained open for services other than abortion, our research did not ask about the scope of activities they are undertaking, but it may include providing other sexual and reproductive health services (e.g., prescribing birth control) or helping patients find abortion care in other states. However, 26 clinics have been forced to close their doors. When clinics close down or stop offering abortion care, it represents a lost source of health care for their community. Changes to Abortion Clinic Services Our research tracked the following changes to abortion services at clinics in 15 states as of October 2, 2022, compared with the situation right before Roe was overturned. Alabama (previously 5 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 4 open for other services Arizona (previously 8 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 7 open for other services Arkansas (previously 2 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 1 open for other services Georgia (previously 14 clinics) 13 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely Idaho (previously 3 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 2 open for other services Kentucky (previously 2 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 1 open for other services Louisiana (previously 3 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 3 clinics closed entirely, 0 open for other services Mississippi (previously 1 clinic) 0 clinics offering abortion care 1 clinic closed entirely, 0 open for other services Missouri (previously 1 clinic) 0 clinics offering abortion care 0 clinics closed entirely, 1 open for other services Oklahoma (previously 4 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 2 clinics closed entirely, 2 open for other services South Dakota (previously 1 clinic) 0 clinics offering abortion care 0 clinics closed entirely, 1 open for other services Tennessee (previously 7 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 2 clinics closed entirely, 5 open for other services Texas (previously 23 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 12 clinics closed entirely, 11 open for other services West Virginia (previously 1 clinic) 0 clinics offering abortion care 0 clinics closed entirely, 1 open for other services Wisconsin (previously 4 clinics) 0 clinics offering abortion care 0 clinics closed entirely, 4 open for other services Impact on People Needing Abortions The new reality of clinics no longer offering abortions or closing down entirely is having a devastating impact in states with abortion bans—and far beyond. The 14 states where abortion is currently unavailable accounted for 125,780 abortions in 2020. Individuals who can no longer obtain an abortion from a clinic in these states are now forced to travel to another state for abortion care (facing additional direct and indirect costs associated with travel logistics, child care and time off work), self-manage their abortion or continue their pregnancy (and accept the significant associated health risks). Likewise, 41,620 abortions were obtained in Georgia in 2020. Under the state’s six-week abortion ban, which prohibits abortion before many people even know they are pregnant, anyone needing an abortion faces an extremely limited time frame for scheduling and obtaining care. This means many people in Georgia will be left with the same options as people in states with total bans. Altogether, these 15 states are home to almost 22 million women of reproductive age (aged 15–49), in addition to other people who may not identify as women but are capable of becoming pregnant and may need an abortion. That means almost one-third (29%) of the total US population of women of reproductive age are living in states where abortion is either unavailable or severely restricted. Importantly, the loss of clinics is felt in all states—even those where abortion remains legal. Ample anecdotal evidence shows that abortion clinics in these states are being inundated with people from states with abortion bans seeking care. These dramatic increases in caseloads mean clinic capacity and staff are stretched to their limits, resulting in longer wait times for appointments even for residents of states where abortion remains legal. More Chaos, Confusion and Harm to Come Even before Roe was overturned, getting an abortion was difficult or outright impossible for many people, especially those who were already facing steep barriers to accessing health care, including people with low incomes, Black and Brown people, immigrants, young people, those with disabilities and rural populations. These inequities are likely to worsen as clinic-based abortion care disappears in many states, a number of them clustered in regions like the South. An already precarious abortion access landscape is likely to continue to deteriorate. Our state legislative tracking predicts that a total of 26 states are certain or likely to ban abortion within a year of Roe being overturned. Already, several states—including Indiana, Ohio and South Carolina—had total or six-week abortion bans go into effect briefly before they were temporarily blocked in court. These bans could go into effect again as soon as the court cases are resolved. These disruptions to service provision—even when temporary—affect the ability of established providers to quickly resume abortion care. Further, rapidly changing laws may make it unclear to some patients whether they can legally seek an abortion in their state.  Much more research will need to be conducted to grasp the full extent of the chaos, confusion and harm that the US Supreme Court has unleashed on people needing abortions, but the picture that is starting to emerge should alarm anyone who supports reproductive freedom and the right to bodily autonomy. Methodology Starting September 20, we generated a list of clinics known to have provided abortion care in 2020 in the 17 states that implemented total or early gestational age abortion bans following the Supreme Court decision in June. We checked our list of 2020 facilities against other sources to remove clinics that had not been providing abortion care as of June 24, 2022. The number of states was adjusted based on changes in state laws and their implementation through October 2, including the removal of Indiana and Ohio after court action temporarily suspended their bans.  Between September 20 and October 2, we used multiple sources—including clinic websites, news stories, social media and information from colleague organizations—to track the status of abortion services. For each clinic, we determined if the facility was open or closed; if open, if it was providing abortions or other sexual and reproductive health care; and, if providing abortions, whether abortion care was available past six weeks’ gestation. In cases where online information was seemingly out of date (e.g., a clinic indicated it provided abortion care even though there was a state ban in effect), we conducted one or more mystery calls using the phone number listed on the clinic’s website. If a phone line was not answered after two or more calls during business hours, we considered the clinic to be closed. Data were imported into Stata17 to systematically count the number of clinics that had closed or had stopped providing abortions and were continuing to offer other services. We analyzed American Community Survey data from 2020 in Stata17 to calculate the number and percentage of women of reproductive age living in the 15 states we investigated. The authors thank Ava Braccia, Christina Geddes and Tammy Lever for collecting the data used in this analysis. Apple Watch Series 7 Explodes, Send Man Hurrying To Hospital – India Today https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/apple-watch-series-7-explodes-send-man-hurrying-to-hospital-india-today/ In a bizarre incident, a man rushed to hospital after his Apple Watch Series 7 overheated and burst. Although, the incident did not cause any injury to the user because he had taken off the watch, he still decided to go to hospital to rule out lead poisoning.   HIGHLIGHTS An Apple Watch Series 7 reportedly burst after overheating.  The Watch also released fumes as its underside burst.   Apple says that it is investigating the incident.   Gadgets with batteries always have this tiny — rare for sure, but the chance is there — a chance of bursting, exploding or going up in smoke. We see this again and again with smartphones. Now a bizarre incident has come to light, highlighting that not even smartwatches or fitness bands are immune to the issue. Reports note that recently an Apple Watch user found that his Series 7 Watch overheated and then burst. While the incident did not lead to any injuries to the user — he had reportedly taken off the watch after it started heating — the man decided to go to a hospital because the Watch had also emitted fumes and the man feared lead poisoning. According to a report by 9to5mac, a man claimed that his Apple Watch 7 got overheated and burst. The man was reportedly wearing the Apple Watch 7 and he suddenly felt the device getting hotter. The temperature started to rise and he even got a high-temperature warning from the smartwatch. Image Source: 9to5Mac The Watch owner also noticed a crack in the back of the smartwatch. Seeking help, he called Apple Support, which advised him to keep the device away from him and not to touch it until Apple contacted him again. The very next day, when the owner again looked up at the watch, he found out that the display of the watch had shattered due to high temperatures. He then picked up the watch and heard a “crackling sound”. The Apple Watch 7 reportedly burst just as the owner was throwing it out the window. The explosion left burns on the man’s couch. Following the incident, for safety, he even visited the hospital fearing lead poisoning. While he got no serious health harm, he did contact Apple Support and briefed them about the situation. The company eventually arranged a pickup for the device and is also investigating the matter. The reason behind the battery explosion is not yet clear. However, it is not the first time that an Apple product, or for that matter a smart device, has exploded or burst. In 2021, a man from Australia was hospitalised after his iPhone X exploded. While the explosion of Lithium-ion batteries are not that common, such incidents might occur if the temperature inside batteries — due to overall warm ambient temperature or for some other reason — increase sharply. — ENDS —

San Antonios Income Surge Hints At More Housing Pressure Moving Trucks On The Horizon KSAT San Antonio
San Antonio’s Income Surge Hints At More Housing Pressure, Moving Trucks On The Horizon – KSAT San Antonio https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/san-antonios-income-surge-hints-at-more-housing-pressure-moving-trucks-on-the-horizon-ksat-san-antonio/ Median income is up – but it comes with implications for San Antonio residents. SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio’s median income is up. A lot. According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the city’s median family income has reached $83,500, a 13% spike over last year’s median of $74,100. Compare that to Dallas and Austin, which both saw comparatively modest median family income increases of 11%, and 9%, respectively. Texas as a whole was up 11% to a median family income of $83,500. To be sure, the family-earnings jump, coupled with San Antonio’s surging population, is extreme relative to other parts of the U.S. and is contributing to growing pains throughout the city, particularly when it comes to housing affordability. Joshua Roberson, a senior data analyst with the Texas A&M Real Estate Research Center, said those factors have snowballed since the Covid-19 pandemic as San Antonio has rapidly added high-paying jobs in sectors such as professional services. “Since we’re still in 2022, the figure is likely a forecast even if it doesn’t explicitly say so. I do think it’s a believable number given how much growth there has been in higher-income jobs,” he said. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, annual salaries in almost all of San Antonio’s most densely populated employment sectors went up in 2021 — the exception being management occupations. However, Roberson said the earnings surge may also have another source. “Of course, you’re also familiar with out-of-staters moving into the major Texas metros,” Roberson added. A recent Business Journal analysis of U.S. migration and IRS data found that Texas is drawing a significant number of relatively higher-earning tax filers from other states — a trend that is driving many existing Texans to more affordable locations such as San Antonio’s Bexar County. For example, tax filers moving to Bexar from Travis County, where Austin is seated, averaged $127,878 in annual gross income in 2019 and 2020, the latest reporting periods available through the IRS. Other locations to send tax filers — and higher earnings — to Bexar County included Fairfax County, Virginia, (tax filers moving to Bexar County averaged $123,452 in annual income). When the pandemic struck, San Antonio’s housing market drew in thousands of new residents, many who work remotely. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, San Antonio boasted the largest number of new residents nationally in 2021, with a net 13,626 more residents than the previous year. The Best Health And Fitness Apps For Android In 2022 – Android Police https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/the-best-health-and-fitness-apps-for-android-in-2022-android-police/ Staying on top of your fitness goals and establishing good habits for a healthier lifestyle isn’t always an easy task, which is why we turn to external help from apps. So we reviewed some of the best fitness and health apps available on Android that you can link to your favorite smartwatch to hit the ground running. It’s time to stop cheating and take control of your health and fitness with the help of some handy apps. Let’s dive in. Google Fit When it comes to getting a clearer picture of your overall health, counting out expended calories, utilizing GPS to map your walks/runs, and gauging your heartbeat over time, almost no app does it better than Google Fit. Not only is Google Fit the default fitness tracking option on Wear OS smartwatches, but it’s also one of the most well-rounded solutions in the Android ecosystem. The app uses a unique “move minutes” tracking system that gauges how many complete minutes you’re in motion throughout the day. It also marks down “heart points,” which account for more rigorous exercises, such as brisk walks, runs, etc. In addition to these metrics, Fit keeps a log of your steps walked, distance traveled, and calories expended. It also tracks heart rate, weight, and how much sleep you’ve acquired. Argus Developed by Azumio — the masterminds behind other popular fitness apps like Instant Heart Rate and Sleep Time. Argus lets users keep track of steps taken; distance traveled, calories burned throughout the day, weight over time, and more. Argus has a lot of flexibility for the wide range of fitness services and hardware it can sync up with, like the Garmin app, Dexcom glucose meters, Strava, and Google Fit. Strava Strava is a hybrid app that blends its fitness roots with a unique social media element, encouraging users to share their activities and progress with other Strava participants. On the fitness side, the app taps into GPS to map walks/runs, bike rides, and it can even track swims. An included Explore tab helps users find fitness events in their area, user-generated challenges, and more. Users can also set weekly and annual goals to keep them motivated over time. On the social side, users are encouraged to connect with friends, post content to their activity feeds (à la Facebook), and even compete with one another. Nike Run Club The Nike Run Club app fits in a similar vein as Strava, where you rely on the app to track your steps for your activities, but with an emphasis on walking and running. Users can tap into their devices’ GPS to map their walks/runs, download free guided runs, and partake in long-term coached exercise regimens. So if you’re looking for another app that supports your progress, and provides coaching, then Nike Run Club is the perfect app for you. Walk with Map My Walk Walk with Map My Walk app has you creating customizable training plans, receiving coaching tips, and joining challenges with a community. The app is versatile whether you exercise near your home or on a daily route. You can upgrade to the MVP premium tier if you prefer personalized coaching and more tools for your training plans. It lets you sync with various apps and wearables like Google Fit, Garmin, and Android Wear. 7 Minute Workout Sometimes, you don’t have much time in your day for an extended workout session, but why feel guilty about missing out on getting your heart rate up? The 7 Minute Workout app follows the HICT (high-intensity circuit training) philosophy to jumpstart your cardiovascular system for the day. The app supports Google Fit, and you’ll have access to 12 exercises with each in less than a minute — all you need is access to a chair and a wall, perfect for when you’re in the office or at home. Sleep as Android Developing a healthier lifestyle is appropriately maintaining your sleep for better workouts, improved mental health, and reduced risk of diseases. One of the most prominent sleep tracking apps is Sleep As Android. Not only has it garnered a large user base, but it has also even earned Google’s prestigious Editor’s choice award. The app can provide nightly stats on sleep quality, measure sleep trends over time, and it has an alarm feature that can wake users with a gentle vibration on the wrist and/or with a series of customizable sounds. After gathering enough data, Sleep As Android can also provide a sleep score to let users know how rested they are over time. My Fitness Pal You cannot ignore your eating habits if you’re trying to become fit and adopt a healthier lifestyle. Knowing how many calories you ingest in a day will help you set up your daily exercise routine and set your unhealthy snacking habits straight. One of our favorite calorie-counter apps is My Fitness Pal. My Fitness Pal logs precisely what you’re eating by consulting a food library, scanning a barcode, and letting you manually input food items you’re about to digest. You can also set up notifications for daily reminders to log your meals into the app. If logging your eating habits isn’t enough, My Fitness Pal also teaches you how to prepare healthier meals and stay connected socially to help your stay motivated. FatSecret While My Fitness Pal is the best all-in-one food tracker app, you might be looking for a simple and completely free (no premium membership needed) alternative for calorie-counting, which is what we have by using FatSecret. Like My Fitness Pal, you can still scan barcodes on products and use image recognition to record your meals; you also have access to a journal, a calendar system, and a photo album to keep a record of all the progress you’ve made. FatSecret also supports integration with Google Fit, Samsung Health, and Fitbit, so you don’t have to worry about losing your records, no matter the main health app you use! Calm An underrated aspect of maintaining a healthier life is looking after your mental health. Our lives get busy, and it is often neglected we look after our well-being. So we turn to apps that help us refocus and meditate our minds; one of our personal favorites and an Editor’s choice is the Calm app. Within the app, you can swipe through several visual “scenes” that include environmental sounds to center yourself. For added serenity, engage in guided breathing exercises, body stretches, meditation, or unlock masterclasses from mindfulness experts. The Calm app has everything you need to improve your mental health. Take control over your health and fitness Hopefully, we’ve provided a list of apps that promote healthy living and aid your fitness goals. An app like Google Fit can do wonders to help track your fitness goals and stay healthy; but it ultimately boils down to the user making plans and acting on them to ensure healthy living. So, carefully review these above apps to see if they match what you’re looking for in your routine to ensure you stick with them.

Former Reporter Going To UAM Hall Of Fame Arkansas Online
Former Reporter Going To UAM Hall Of Fame – Arkansas Online https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/former-reporter-going-to-uam-hall-of-fame-arkansas-online/ Rick Owens, formerly of Pine Bluff and a former sports reporter for The Pine Bluff Commercial, will be one of five honorees to be inducted into the University of Arkansas at Monticello Sports Hall of Fame today. Others include Cotton Blossoms softball All-Americans Sarah Hayslip Santo and Becca Tipton Greenwood, basketball All-Region player Derylton Hill and UAM Spirit Award winner Jeremy Woodall. Owens was a four-year starter and letterman for the UAM baseball team from 1976-79, earning All-AIC, All-NAIA and Academic All-American during the 1978 season. He played third base and batted a then school record .441 his junior year. He also played baseball for the Pine Bluff High Zebras 1973-75, and worked at The Commercial all three years in high school. He was a member of the host Pine Bluff team that played in the 1972 Babe Ruth World Series. “I don’t think I ever had a free weekend off my entire high school years, as I was always working or covering a sports event. I loved working for the Commercial and have great memories working with Frank Lightfoot, Bill Darling, Carl Whimper and others those three years. “I really thought I would go into journalism after college, as I also worked for The Advance Monticellonian as sports editor for four years in college. I was always busy in college working for the UAM SID department, yearbook and campus newspaper.” But Owens entered the business world after college, managing Kell Athletics in Pine Bluff before buying the Kell’s store in Monticello in 1981. He changed the name to Southeast Athletics and owned it until closing in 1986. He also opened a baseball card store (Baseball Cards, Etc.) in both Monticello and Pine Bluff’s Pines mall during the early 1990s. He was the UAM head baseball coach for three years from 1984-86 while he had his sporting goods store. After closing his store, he taught geometry and coached at both Monticello Junior High and High School from 1992-95. But his success and love of baseball memorabilia took over in 1995 and moved to Arlington, Texas, to manage Sports Legacy Art Gallery inside the Ballpark in Arlington, home of the Texas Rangers. “That was the hardest decision I ever made,” Owens says. “We had a 3-year old that was the only grandchild of my wife’s parents, and my wife Donna had lived in Monticello for all of her 35 years. So moving six hours away from our folks was tough.” From there, Owens moved to Houston as the sales manager for Tristar Sports Productions. He still resides in Houston and has owned his own sports memorabilia business, RGO Sports, for the last 10 years. He is son of Violet Ross, who still resides in Pine Bluff. “My mom (Violet Ross) and brother David still live in Pine Bluff, so we get back 2-3 times year during the different holidays and summers,” he continued. “I’ve been involved in some type of sports my entire life, either playing, coaching, refereeing, umpiring and I’m still in business selling sports autographs. I’ve met 100s of professional athletes from the Tom Bradys to the Mickey Mantles, so it’s been a fun ride and I wouldn’t change a thing.” Owens and the other four honorees will be inducted into the Hall of Fame at a banquet today, then also recognized at halftime of the UAM-Northwestern Oklahoma State homecoming game at 2 p.m. Saturday. “I still can’t believe it. It’s a great honor and going to be a lot of fun,” Owens said. “I hope to see a lot of old friends, teammates and some of my former players. I can’t wait.”

North Korea Fires More Missiles: U.S. Blames China Russia Axios
North Korea Fires More Missiles: U.S. Blames China Russia Axios
North Korea Fires More Missiles: U.S. Blames China, Russia – Axios https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/north-korea-fires-more-missiles-u-s-blames-china-russia-axios/ The U.S. ambassador to the UN accused Beijing and Moscow of “enabling” North Korea’s military after it fired two more ballistic missiles on Thursday following a Security Council meeting on the country’s recent launches. Why it matters: Thursday’s launch was the sixth in 12 days, occurring after the U.S. redeployed an aircraft carrier off the Korean peninsula. The big picture: The U.S. and several allies called for the emergency UN Security Council meeting due to Pyongyang conducting its longest-range ballistic missile test ever on Tuesday, sending the weapon flying over Japan — prompting Japanese officials to issue an evacuation warning. The U.S. and South Korean military held live-fire drills in response to Pyongyang’s first missile launch over Japan since 2017. After the U.S. repositioned the USS Ronald Reagan off the Korean peninsula, Pyongyang fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea on Thursday, according to South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and Japan’s government. Driving the news: While the Biden administration called the missile test over Japan “dangerous and reckless” and a “clear violation” of Security Council resolutions, fellow permanent Security Council members Beijing and Moscow opposed calling the meeting — which ended with no solution. Chinese and Russian officials accused Washington at the meeting of provoking the launches with military exercises. What they’re saying: Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said after the latest missiles were fired that “the two Council members that are blocking us from taking action are enabling North Korea.” Photo: Linda Thomas-Greenfield/Twitter State of play: Tokyo lodged a “vehement protest” with North Korea over Thursday’s missile tests through official channels in Beijing. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told reporters launching six missiles in such a short period “absolutely cannot be tolerated,” per Reuters. Meanwhile, the North Korean foreign ministry said in a statement it “strongly condemns the U.S.” and its allies for calling the Security Council meeting and claimed the repositioning of the USS Ronald Reagan was “a serious threat to the stability of the situation on the Korean peninsula and in its vicinity.” The ministry claimed firing the latest missiles was “just counteraction” for the U.S.-South Korean military drills. Between the lines: North Korea’s “consistent and persistent claims” that its missile launches are in response to joint U.S.-South Korea military drills form part of Pyongyang’s “long running strategy of establishing equivalence between their illicit provocations” and the U.S.-South Korea drills, said Go Myong-hyun, a senior fellow at the Asan Institute of Policy Studies in Seoul, per the Washington Post. The latest North Korean foreign ministry statement “echoes precisely the talking points intended to inculcate the perception that the drills and provocations are equivalent, when in fact they are not,” Go added. South Korean Defense Ministry spokesperson Moon Hong Sik said Pyongyang’s spate of recent launches indicate an “urgency to meet” North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un’s weapons development goals, AP reports. Flashback: North Korea launches missile as VP Harris prepares to visit Seoul Editor’s note: This article has been updated with new details throughout.

Amazon Discontinues Glow Video-Calling Device For Kids The Indian Express
Amazon Discontinues Glow Video-Calling Device For Kids – The Indian Express https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/amazon-discontinues-glow-video-calling-device-for-kids-the-indian-express/ Amazon.com Inc. is discontinuing its pandemic-era kids’ video calling device amid lackluster sales and a shift in consumer behavior. Launched a year ago, the Amazon Glow emerged from the company’s Grand Challenge moonshot laboratory. It seemed the perfect pandemic-era product: a combination video screen and projector that helped children get face time, play games, read and even draw with distant relatives. But sales were slow, and Amazon is now looking to shift employees who worked on the gadget into other roles. “At Amazon we think big, experiment, and invest in new ideas to delight customers,” said Amazon spokeswoman Kristy Schmidt, who confirmed the Glow’s cancellation. “We also continually evaluate the progress and potential of our products to deliver customer value, and we regularly make adjustments based on those assessments. We will be sharing updates and guidance with Glow customers soon.” Amazon has taken a number of measures to restrain costs as sales growth stagnates, including shuttering warehouses and freezing hiring for corporate jobs in its retail business. Reviewers praised the device’s concept, but said it felt unfinished. A monthly subscription to an Amazon kid-focused service and a recommendation that the person on the other end use a tablet, not a smartphone, also may have limited its appeal. The device also hit the market as many consumers began to resume their normal habits following the release of Covid-19 vaccines. Amazon doesn’t disclose sales data for its electronics, but Glow had about 500 customer reviews on the company’s retail site, low even by the standard of Amazon’s niche or experimental products. Glow was steeply discounted on Tuesday, listed at $150 for members of Amazon’s Prime program, 55% off the list price. Later in the day, it was unavailable. Amazon’s devices group has produced such hits as the Echo smart speaker and Fire streaming sticks, but also has a history of launching devices that seem to be looking for a purpose. A voice-activated microwave oven launched in 2018 never caught on with shoppers, and Amazon’s effort to make its own smartphone, the Fire Phone launched in 2014, remains its biggest dud.

And a pitch. James, who has spoken in the past about wanting to eventually own an NBA franchise — with Las Vegas on his mind — sent a crystal-clear message to Commissioner Adam Silver on Wednesday night, reminding him of his future plans. “I know Adam is in Abu Dhabi right now, I believe. But he probably sees every single interview and transcript that comes through from NBA players,” James said after the Lakers’ matchup with the Phoenix Suns. “So, I want the team here, Adam. Thank you.” Silver is indeed in Abu Dhabi, for preseason games this week between the Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks. He has spoken of expansion plans many times in recent years, but there has also been a clear belief that the NBA won’t move forward on adding teams until the next Collective Bargaining Agreement and television deals are complete. That said, Silver has called Las Vegas “a great sports market.” The NBA already has deep ties to Las Vegas, and holds its Summer League there. “As I said before, at some point, this league invariably will expand, but it’s not at this moment that we are discussing it,” Silver said earlier this year. “But one of the factors in expanding is the potential dilution of talent.” James said in June on his show “The Shop: Uninterrupted” on HBO Sports that he wants to own a team and revealed his plans to have it in Las Vegas, which has long been mentioned as a possible expansion site. Fans in Las Vegas gave James loud ovations Wednesday night, and he responded by scoring 23 points in 18 minutes. He appeared in only the first half, making 8 of his 11 shots. He looked right at home. And if Las Vegas becomes a business home one day, James clearly wouldn’t mind. “It’s the best fan base in the world and I would love to bring a team here at some point,” James said. “That would be amazing.” ___ More AP NBA: https://apnews.com/hub/NBA and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

7 Steps To Fuel Your Body Massage Magazine
7 Steps To Fuel Your Body Massage Magazine
7 Steps To Fuel Your Body – Massage Magazine https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/7-steps-to-fuel-your-body-massage-magazine/ Food represents and provides many things: energy, nutrition, culture, celebration, enjoyment and even medicine. Technically, food breaks into five fundamental categories that we need in proper proportions to fuel our body for optimal health and wellness: macro-nutrients including carbohydrates, fats and proteins, and micro-nutrients including vitamins and minerals. Eating Habits Matter We all witness the negative consequences of poor eating habits. The U.S. is one of the unhealthiest nations in the world; with such diet-related diseases as heart disease and cancer being the number-one killers (absent a pandemic). Good eating habits are core to good nutrition, and nutrition is central to our health and wellness. The benefits of proper nutrition are powerful: heart health, lower blood pressure, reduced cancer risk, lowered cholesterol, weight management, improved sleep, diabetes avoidance, strong bones and teeth, gut health, even-better mood and improved memory. Emerging research demonstrates that good nutrition together with lifestyle choices can even counteract a genetic predisposition toward a disease state. Experts have a saying, “Genetics loads the gun, but the environment pulls the trigger.”That means if we have the genes, our environment, including eating choices, may be the only thing standing between us and developing a chronic condition. There is evidence that one can turn off a negative gene marker through positive lifestyle choices. This is truly good news, indicating we have great influence over our current and future health. Yet, the reality is too many people do not receive the nutrition their bodies require from the food they eat due to factors like limited time, family constraints, lack of convenience, familiar habits, awareness, as well as taste preferences. Have you heard the adage: “You are what you eat”? This is a half-truth. The full truth is, “We are what we digest and absorb.” Ideally, we receive the vast majority of our required macro- and micro-nutrients through the real, whole, natural and fresh food that we eat. For example, it is easier for your body to use vitamins and minerals that come from a balanced diet rather than from supplements, according to a clinical professor Emma Laing, PhD, RDN. Compounds in fruits and vegetables work synergistically to promote wellness and these cannot be replicated in a dietary supplement. The Problem with Processed Foods Refined and processed foods, meaning altered from their natural state, will never be as absorbable, digestible and healthy as Mother Nature’s offerings. Consider the relationship between the surge in diet diseases and the evolution of our food chain. Less than 50 years ago most food was locally sourced and largely fresh, while today, most food is non-local, largely processed and full of additives. Refined or processed food almost universally involves removing fiber and nutrients while inserting seasonings and additives. Why? Fiber is difficult to preserve, so it is removed to improve shelf stability. And seasonings, disproportionately sugar and salt, lead to preferred taste, driving demand. As we eat more processed and packaged foods that are higher in these additives and devoid of fiber, it often leads to long-term nutritional gaps and poor health. I believe one reason I used to consistently overeat was because my body was craving the nutrients it was not always receiving. A fundamental step for me in reversing my overeating was shifting to more of a plant-based diet. While I did not set out to drop pounds, I began to lose weight by feeding my body more of what it needed, making it easier to eat less. 7 Steps to Help You Fuel Your Body Here are seven tips leading to healthy eating habits. Pick and choose what works for you, repeat and be patient with yourself as any improvement to your proper fueling is hugely beneficial. 1. Embrace moderation. Eat a little bit of everything and not too much of anything, with just one exception … 2. Eat lots of veggies, every day! As wide a variety as possible, as many colors as possible. The longest-living populations around the world share a common dietary characteristic—they all eat a largely whole-food, plant-based diet. 3. Focus on food, not nutrients. Concentrate on eating fresh (versus preserved), whole (versus refined), natural (versus modified) foods whenever possible, and the nutrients will take care of themselves. 4. Eat what makes you happy. Remember to balance both immediate and long-term happiness. Might you want a treat for immediate taste-bud pleasure? Go ahead and occasionally indulge. Also be mindful of your body as that healthy salad will make your body happy long-term. Part of moderation is finding your best balance between happy now and happy later. 5. Embrace the bitter. Raw kale, spinach, collard greens and other leafy-green superfoods have a bitter taste, which can be acquired. (Remember, there likely are items in your current diet that were also acquired tastes you chose to nurture, like coffee, alcohol, raw oysters, sushi and blue cheese.) My express lane to acquiring a taste for bitter was through a daily veggie smoothie brimming with natural, whole-food fiber and nutrition. It’s like drinking a healthy salad for breakfast every day. Initially nasty, then tolerable and now enjoyable! Find your own way to tolerating, if not embracing, bitter. To help you get started, here is my favorite Green Smoothie recipe: Green Smoothie Recipe Cut, combine, and blend the following until smooth: • Five to six stalks of celery (remove any leaves) • Five to six inches of cucumber (English cucumber seeds are more easily digested) • Two handfuls of spinach • One avocado • One handful of collard greens (can substitute swiss chard) • One handful of kale • One handful of cilantro • Portion of or full fresh jalapeno pepper (to achieve desired flavor) • Water to achieve your desired consistency (I use 2 ¾ cups) • Personal preferences: Include all stalks for fiber benefit, use organic produce, and substitute one cup of bone broth (reducing water the same amount) 6. Make your environment work for you, not against you. Simply remove non-desired items from your environment and replace these with healthy options that make your road to better eating habits a smoother ride. 7. Engage a like-minded friend who can support you, encourage accountability, even let you vent when you feel challenged or had a setback. We all need cheerleaders to reach lasting change. Nutritious and Delicious Healthy food is nutritious—and can also be delicious! Best wishes on developing better eating habits to fuel your daily performance. The IPhone 14 Pro Models Are Still The Creatives’ Choice – Malay Mail https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/the-iphone-14-pro-models-are-still-the-creatives-choice-malay-mail/ Follow us on Instagram, subscribe to our Telegram channel and browser alerts for the latest news you need to know. KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 — Do Apple’s most expensive iPhones deserve to be the most coveted in the world almost every year? That is the ultimate question and figuring out the answer is, surprisingly, still fun after all these years. Despite competitors boasting newer features, more megapixels and more control, Apple seems to be doing something right to keep most iPhone users faithful. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are probably the heaviest iPhones of the last few years and that is perhaps my biggest complaint. Weak eyes and big hands mean I will invariably reach for the larger phones but my weak wrists are not a fan of how heavy the Pro Max models get after long periods of time. Two hundred and six grams for the iPhone 14 Pro and 240 grams for the iPhone 14 Pro Max don’t feel like a lot at first but after one hour of Genshin Impact or too many cat videos, the phone starts weighing on you. Is the Deep Purple worth waiting for? It’s a nice shade that looks different depending on what light it’s in so if you want something that stands out without being garish, you might like it. Jury’s still out on whether it’s really a deep purple though I would call it more a muted dark purple. Yes, this could launch a space shuttle Taking photos with the ProRAW format conserves more detail and colour, making for even better lowlight photos. It feels a bit ridiculous to write about iPhone specs when I could just include a link to the Apple website. Here’s what you need to know to sound smart when talking about your new phone to your Android-toting friends. The Pro models use the latest, most powerful processor Apple has ever put in a phone. Yes, Apple makes new ones every year. The name of Apple’s shiny new mini-supercomputer is the A16 Bionic and Apple says 16 billion tiny transistors have somehow been squeezed into the chip, to create a powerhouse that is (Apple says) 40 per cent faster than the competition. Oh, and there’s 6GB of memory too, in case you want to know. You also have four storage choices, namely 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. While your new shiny iPhone will feel faster, the new chip is also a lot more efficient to stretch your battery life and is also more powerful so it can improve the “computational photography” to match the new, shiny camera. Basically the Pro models are even smarter at computing how to take pretty pictures so you don’t need to think too hard. We’ll get to the cameras a little later because I know that will be the number one question Malaysians will ask: “The pictures nice ah?” There’s more to pixels than megapixels The iPhone 14 Pro’s improved computational photography is most evident in lowlight with the phone making the most of what little light is available to produce pleasing photos without too much noise. Am sure people are loudly discussing how it’s taken Apple this long to go anywhere near 50MP on a camera, while also debating just how those extra megapixels are being used. Yes, the new iPhone Pro models have a new, shiny 48MP main camera, a 12MP ultrawide camera as well as a 12MP telephoto camera that aggravates me as it always does because Apple is still allergic to giving its users more zoom. 5x zoom, Apple, just give me that and maybe I will bitch the tiniest bit less but then it took forever for Apple to enable a proper macro mode so hope remains eternal. There are iPhone 13 Pro users who might say that they see no difference in the photos they shoot. That is, unless they try shooting in ProRAW. The default setting will take nice pictures but if you want as much information from your camera sensor stuffed in your photo — ProRAW is where the magic happens. Now this is why the “Pro” models are marketed at Pros. A photo shot in ProRAW might not look good right after you take it. Instead you need to use an editing tool such as Adobe’s Lightroom or the DarkRoom app on mobile to polish the proverbial diamonds. Those gorgeous (after editing) ProRAW or RAW images will, however, take up a lot of space on your phone so expect to be cleaning out your phone galleries pretty frequently. You can take pretty decent pictures on the stock camera app but where the camera is most rewarding is if you take the effort to try shooting with apps such as Halide. As for video, I did try the new Action mode that apparently gives you a smooth shoot experience minus the shakiness when running with a phone, almost like you put a gimbal on it. While a gimbal would probably give you a more polished end result, Action mode is the next best thing to strapping on an actual action camera but the only failing is that you need a lot of light for it to work as intended, thus is more suited to outdoorsy shoots. Speaking of video, Apple’s Cinematic mode has now been upgraded to support 4K resolution at 30fps as well as 24fps. It was decent in the previous iteration, but the upgrade will please those looking for a more polished final result. It’s the little things As for the day-to-day, the better processor does mean that even with the new shiny Always On Display (AOD), I got the battery on the iPhone 14 Pro Max to last a whole day with about 30 per cent left by the end of the day, with the ordinary Pro not being quite as hardy. You would probably need to charge the base Pro model by 8pm at latest, though you can eke a bit more time by turning off the always on feature and tweaking the brightness. This is for someone who is generally very high-usage: I tweet a lot, check my emails, take a lot of photos, watch YouTube as well as spend at least an hour on mobile games. Unfortunately like the iPhone 13 Pro the phone does run warm but it’s not quite as uncomfortable as the older model. The display and iOS 16 combo makes for a sleek, polished lockscreen that I think has a lot more utility than Android iterations of AOD. Apple made a big deal about how bright the new ProMotion display on the iPhone Pro is as well as how it can conserve battery by lowering its refresh rate when idle. The brightness took some getting used to — I wasn’t used to my phone being as bright as it was in the dark but I do enjoy not having to squint at my phone in the day. It’s not without its bugs. So far I’ve seen one of the Pro models suddenly hang and display the Apple logo before shutting itself off. This could be a software quirk and I expect iOS 16 still has bugs to iron out. Other little extras such as the Crash Detection is of course near-impossible to test but you can only hope it will work as intended while also hoping you never need to use it. As for the much touted Dynamic Island — there’s been a lot said about it and while it’s a cool addition, to be honest I tend not to focus much on it. It’s very cool but it would be a lot cooler for more third-party apps to integrate with it but it’s certainly a clever feature that means the small pill-shaped camera cutout is functional instead of an eyesore. The sound also seems to have improved where the speakers are concerned, being a little more prominent than last year’s model. To buy or not to buy Some might think the iPhone 13 Pro would be a bargain over the 14 Pro models and if you just need a phone with a solid battery and decent camera, I would agree. But it’s enough of an upgrade over the 12 Pro and older phones that would make it a decent buy though the only pity is how weak the ringgit is. I confess Samsung’s Z Flip4 phone is certainly appealing with its quirky design but considering that at its price point it doesn’t have telephoto, that’s a bit of a downside. As for the Z Fold4 it is still fairly expensive for what it offers, which is mainly a bigger, foldable screen. Right now, Samsung’s best alternative to the iPhone 14 Pro range is the S22 Ultra. The camera? Excellent. That S-Pen? Brilliant. Otherwise, however, it’s rather utilitarian and boring and in a world drowning in smartphones, sometimes you just want a little charm and that’s what this year’s iPhone Pro models have in abundance. As to which size to get — the Max only if you want a bigger screen and can handle a fairly large phone. Otherwise, save a little (actually, a lot of) money with the smaller version that is just as powerful and you might drop it less. The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are already available online and at your nearest retailer with prices starting from RM5,299 for the 14 Pro and RM5,799 for the 14 Pro Max.

Crypto News: 51% Of Daily Bitcoin Volume On Crypto Exchanges Are Fake, Says Report – India.com https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/crypto-news-51-of-daily-bitcoin-volume-on-crypto-exchanges-are-fake-says-report-india-com/ Crypto News: 51% Of Daily Bitcoin Volume On Crypto Exchanges Are Fake, Says Report New Delhi: More than 51 per cent of the total Bitcoin trading volume on various crypto exchanges this year is fake amid volatile global economic conditions, a new report has claimed. Bitcoin is the blue chip of cryptocurrency and represents 40 per cent of the total crypto assets outstanding in the new and volatile crypto markets. Its market cap is currently at 382.25 billion. Also Read – TATA Vs TATA Coin: Delhi HC Grants Former’s Appeal Against The Cryptocurrency According to data provided by niche news publisher BanklessTimes.com, the majority of this fake Bitcoin volume is due to wash trading. Also Read – RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das Calls Cryptocurrency ‘Clear Danger’; What Do Experts Say? Know Here Wash trading is illegal, where an asset is bought and sold simultaneously on the same platform to create false liquidity. This is often done by bots or spoofing orders. Also Read – Crypto Crash: Indian Investors Lost Nearly Rs 1,000 Crore To Fake Cryptocurrency Exchanges “It’s difficult to talk about cryptocurrency without talking about Bitcoin. Yet, there is a concern that a large part of the daily traded volume of Bitcoin is fake. This puts into question the legitimacy of exchanges and the reliability of data,” said Jonathan Merry, CEO of BanklessTimes. Another factor contributing to the fake volume is stable coins such as Tether (USDT). Tether pairs very well with Bitcoin and is often used to buy and sell Bitcoin on exchanges. “This results in much volume being generated without any actual Bitcoin changing hands,” said the report. According to the report, faking trading volume can be a way for exchanges to attract new customers. By appearing to be more popular than they actually are, exchanges can trick investors into thinking there is more activity and liquidity on their platform. Another reason people might engage in wash trading is to prop up the price of a particular asset, according to the report. By buying and selling the asset simultaneously, they can create the illusion of demand and drive up the price. This can be done for personal gain or artificially inflate an asset’s price before selling it. “Investors should be wary of exchanges that report false figures. You must do your research and only use exchanges you trust,” the report suggested. US Believes Elements Within Ukraines Government Authorized Assassination Near Moscow Sources Say CNN
US Believes Elements Within Ukraine’s Government Authorized Assassination Near Moscow, Sources Say – CNN https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/us-believes-elements-within-ukraines-government-authorized-assassination-near-moscow-sources-say-cnn/ Washington CNN  —  The US intelligence community believes that the car bombing that killed Darya Dugina, the daughter of prominent Russian political figure Alexander Dugin, was authorized by elements within the Ukrainian government, sources briefed on the intelligence told CNN. The US was not aware of the plan beforehand, according to the sources, and it is still unclear who exactly the US believes signed off on the assassination. It is also not clear whether the US intelligence community believes that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was aware of the plot or authorized it. But the intelligence finding, first reported by the New York Times, would seem to corroborate elements of the Russian authorities’ findings that the car bombing was “pre-planned.” Russia had accused Ukrainian nationals of being responsible for the attack, which Ukraine had strongly denied in the aftermath of the explosion. Asked to comment, a Ukrainian defense intelligence official told CNN Wednesday evening following publication of the latest reports that their agency had no new information on Dugina’s death. Shortly after her death, the same official had told CNN that Ukraine had nothing to do with it. The National Security Council, CIA and State Department declined to comment. US intelligence officials believe that Dugina was driving her father’s car on the night she was killed, and that her father was the actual target of the operation, one of the sources said. Dugin is a Russian ultranationalist and philosopher who has been a fierce proponent of Russia’s war in Ukraine. A friend of Dugina also told the Russian state owned news outlet TASS shortly after the explosion that the car she was driving was her father’s. Just days after Dugina’s death, Russian authorities accused a Ukrainian woman of remotely detonating explosives planted in Dugina’s Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, and then driving through the Pskov region and into Estonia to escape. Oleksii Danylov, secretary of Ukraine’s National Security Council, immediately denied the allegation. “We have nothing to do with the murder of this lady – this is the work of the Russian special services,” he said in August. Zelensky adviser Mykhailo Podolyak also said at the time that the Russian accusation reflected the “fictional world” the Russian government is operating in. The intelligence surrounding Ukraine’s involvement, if accurate, would signal a bold expansion of Ukraine’s covert operations to target a well-known political figure just outside of Moscow. To date, Ukrainian strikes inside Russia have largely been limited to attacks on fuel depots and military bases in cities along the Russia-Ukraine border, like Belgorod. But the US does not have good visibility into all of Ukraine’s planned strikes, sources told CNN. A Ukrainian official told CNN that the US intelligence community’s findings had not been broached during a meeting between US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and Zelensky’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak in Istanbul earlier this week. It is not clear whether the issue was raised more recently by President Joe Biden in a phone call with Zelensky on Tuesday. A spokesperson for the National Security Council declined to comment. Dugina, who was 29 when she was killed, was a public figure in her own right and frequently appeared as a commentator on Russian TV networks pushing anti-West, nationalist narratives. As CNN has previously reported, Dugina also ran an English- and Turkish-language website called United World International, which itself was part of a broader propaganda effort known as “Project Lakhta.” The State Department has accused Project Lakhta of deploying online “trolls” to interfere in US elections. The US sanctioned both Dugin and Dugina after Russia’s invasion in February, accusing them of spreading propaganda and acting to destabilize Ukraine. This story has been updated with additional reporting Wednesday.

Jio 5G Welcome Offer Announced: How To Get The Invite? India Today
Jio 5G Welcome Offer Announced: How To Get The Invite? India Today
Jio 5G Welcome Offer Announced: How To Get The Invite? – India Today https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/jio-5g-welcome-offer-announced-how-to-get-the-invite-india-today/ Reliance Jio’s 5G services are rolling out in four cities, days after Airtel launched its 5G network in India. While Reliance claims that users can enjoy true 5G in India due to its investment in standalone (SA) technology, there’s still a lot of confusion regarding availability and pricing. That’s because of its new “welcome offer” that technically brings 5G to customers on a trial basis. This raises more questions about who is eligible and how to avail the Jio 5G welcome offer. Currently, more clarity from Jio is awaited, but we have an idea about availability and eligibility. Where is Jio 5G available: Reliance Jio said its 5G started rolling out in four cities – Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Varanasi on October 5, on the occasion of Dussehra. The company clarified that this is its “beta trial” phase of its “true-5G”. It means that not all users (even in these four cities) are eligible in the initial phase and 5G will arrive to select users on an invite basis. Once it is widely available in these four cities, Jio will start rolling out services in more cities. The company has said it aims to cover all districts by December 2023. Who is eligible for Jio 5G welcome offer, how to get: Let’s start with the obvious. Only phones compatible with 5G will get the fast-internet connectivity option. To check whether your phone supports the technology, find the model number and go to the official manufacturers’ website to see the specifications. If there’s nothing on 5G for the specific smartphone, your phone does not have the option. Secondly, Jio has not opened any dedicated channels to sign up for its 5G services. It is likely that the company will select customers in these four cities and automatically upgrade their 4G plan to 5G. It also means users won’t be required to upgrade their SIM cards. To recall, when Jio launched its 4G services in India, it announced a similar welcome offer that allowed users to enjoy services for 90 days for free. A similar scheme is expected with the latest iteration of the 5G welcome offer. Select Jio customers will automatically be updated to the 5G network for free. Following that, more users will get to use the benefits. Jio 5G cost: Currently, the company has not clarified Jio 5G tariffs. Jio has repeatedly said its 5G services will be aggressively priced to make India a 2G-Mukt (2G free) country. The company also highlights that 5G services will bring “transformational changes across Education, Healthcare, Agriculture, Skill Development, Small, Medium, and Large enterprises, IoT, Smart homes, and Gaming, impacting 1.4 billion Indians”. — ENDS —

Young 40-goal scorer Jason Robertson is expected to miss the start of training camp for the Dallas Stars since the team and the restricted free agent have been unable so far to agree on a new contract. General manager Jim Nill said Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2022, that there have been steady, ongoing negotiations over the last couple of weeks with Robertson and his representatives.Jae C. Hong/AP FRISCO, Texas (AP) — Jason Robertson has signed a $31 million, four-year contract with the Dallas Stars after the young 40-goal scorer missed the first two weeks of training camp. The Stars announced the deal late Wednesday night, after their exhibition game in Denver, only a week before the regular season opener Oct. 13 at Nashville. Robertson turned 23 soon after the end of last season, when the left wing had 41 goals and 38 assists for 79 points in his 74 games. His 13 power-play goals led the team. Robertson joined Hockey Hall of Famer Mike Modano, Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin as the only 40-goal scorers since the franchise moved to Dallas in 1993. “Jason is an integral part of the present and future of our team and we’re thrilled to have him for the next four years,” general manager Jim Nill said. A second-round draft pick (39th overall) by the Stars in 2017, Robertson has 125 points (58 goals, 67 assists) in his 128 NHL games. The 6-foot-3 California native had one goal and three assists in his first postseason action last season, when Dallas lost its first-round playoff series in seven games against Calgary. “Since he was drafted by our organization, he has worked tirelessly to become a better player every day. His knack for scoring goals and seeing plays develop on the ice are just some of the tremendous assets that he brings to our team,” Nill said. “He is one of the best young players in the NHL, and we look forward to seeing him continue to progress.” Robertson had the second-highest point total for a Stars rookie in 2020-21, when he had 45 points (17 goals, 28 assists) in his 51 games. Before the start of this season’s camp, new coach Pete DeBoer said he looked forward to coaching Robertson. “Listen, I laid awake at night with the excitement of coaching Jason Robertson, 40-plus goals, but he’s not here,” DeBoer said then. “So, you know, until he gets here, I can’t spend any energy on that.” Robertson will finally be there now. ___ More AP NHL: https://apnews.com/hub/nhl and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

North West Business News: Beer Piper; Poundland; Weightmans; Planit-IE; PHX Training; Everton FC; Eatock Design & Build | TheBusinessDesk.com – The Business Desk https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/north-west-business-news-beer-piper-poundland-weightmans-planit-ie-phx-training-everton-fc-eatock-design-build-thebusinessdesk-com-the-business-desk/ A new online tool has been launched to help publicans, landlords and bar managers see how much money they could potentially save weekly, monthly and annually by utilising high tech beer line systems. Created by Manchester-based Beer Piper, a manufacturer of high tech cleaning systems for beer lines in any type of venue that sells draught beers, lagers and ciders, the simple-to-use tool calculates how much beer can possibly be saved every week, which is offset against the cost of installing and running the system. It then provides the theoretical maximum cost saving totals per week and per annum. Jeff Singer, from Beer Piper, said: “The cost of living crisis, especially the cost of energy bills, is adversely affecting Britain’s hospitality industry and – as an integral part of that industry – we wanted to demonstrate clearly that installing systems such as our popular BP4 machine can actually contribute to the bottom line and produce a yield on your draught sales in excess of 100%. “The crisis is yet another assault on an already-tested industry that bore the brunt of the pandemic, so we are taking an every penny matters mindset by launching this free tool.” He added: “An average boozer in Britain with a total of 10 taps in the pub each holding two pints in their lines, with pints priced at the national average of £4.09, would potentially be able to save over £3,800 per year by installing Beer Piper’s most recent BP4 system, which enables you to sell the beer in the lines as you are cleaning them, saving a lot of beer waste.” Throughout the pandemic, Beer Piper played an educational role in supporting the trade with a pipeline of content that helped landlords and bar managers shut down and reopen lines properly, and save money with cost saving tips. :: Poundland is putting the finishing touches to its latest Merseyside store as it prepares to open in Speke this Saturday, October 8, creating 20 jobs. The new store, on New Mersey Retail Park, comprises more than 12,000 sq ft, which is about twice the size of a typical Poundland store and has been designed to offer the widest product range possible. Poundland says the investment in the new store marks a vote of confidence in Speke and the retail park which has undergone a multimillion-pound redevelopment in recent years. The new Poundland store will bring clothing back to the site, which was previously occupied by Marks & Spencer’s clothing store. Poundland’s director of retail, Darren Kay, said: “Speke’s New Mersey Retail Park has undergone some big changes in the last few years and we’re very excited about being part of its future. We’re working hard to make sure it’s a store that Speke can be proud of.” :: John Schorah, Emma Collins (Weightmans), Michael Eakin, and Steve Peacock Liverpool-based national law firm, Weightmans, has become a corporate sponsor of the Liverpool Philharmonic for its 2022/23 season. Weightmans was established in Liverpool in 1827 and remains headquartered in the city. The firm is particularly interested in Liverpool Philharmonic’s Music and Mental Health programme, which is now in its 14th year, and will sponsor Liverpool Philharmonic’s first Dementia-Friendly concert of the season. The concert, titled ‘A Walk in the Country’, will be performed twice on Saturday, December 3, at Liverpool Philharmonic’s Music Room. Given by members of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the dementia-friendly concert series is designed specifically for people living with dementia, their friends, family and carers. This concert will be presented by Gethyn Jones, sub-principal cellist of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Michael Eakin, chief executive of Liverpool Philharmonic, said: “The support of the business community plays an integral role in our ability to deliver a diverse range of concerts throughout the season. We really appreciate the local and national businesses who have maintained their support for Liverpool Philharmonic.” Steve Peacock, partner and head of Weightmans’ Liverpool office, said: “At Weightmans, we believe that investment in arts and culture is crucial, not just to benefit the local economy but to support and enhance the wellbeing of the community. Music can be an incredible tonic to those living with dementia and we are so pleased to support the Philharmonic’s dementia-friendly concert, which will hopefully bring joy to those who attend.” :: Planit-IE staff Planit-IE has announced that it is handing the reins over to its staff and becoming employee owned. The landscape architecture, urban design and visualisation firm, headquartered in Altrincham for almost 25 years, has made the announcement that two thirds of shares have been transferred into a Planit-IE Employee Ownership Trust. The remaining shares will be retained by existing stakeholders and two new members, Georgina Baines and Kevin Redhead, two long-serving company employees and new directors. Helen Wright, head of development at Sanctuary Housing, and long-term friend of the practice, has agreed to become its first independent trust chair. Peter Swift, managing director and co-founder, said: “This shift will herald the start of a new, vibrant and dynamic chapter in Planit-IE’s future. “There is compelling research to show that a combination of shared ownership and employee participation results in a business that is more engaged, innovative, productive and sustainable – building on all of Planit-IE’s existing hallmarks. Our mission is for our people and for the planet, with sustainability at the heart of everything we do. We believe this transition is the best move for us to make to deliver on our mission.” Ed Lister, managing director and co-founder, said: “Having spent 25 years building the practice from scratch, and witnessed other similarly strong businesses sell out and then slowly lose their identity, culture and purpose in the process, we knew that this wasn’t an option for us, and the move to employee ownership means that it should never be.” :: Briony Fawcett Businesses in Cumbria can benefit from a range of free training sessions aimed at upskilling their staff. PHX Training, which has centres in Barrow and Carlisle, is running a range of fully-funded courses designed to help businesses improve the skills of their local workers, plug skills gaps and improve staff retention. The Skills Support for the Workforce contract is aiming to upskill 115 employees in the county before March, at a value to the region of £167,000. All small and medium-sized businesses with fewer than 250 staff can benefit from the training courses, while companies undergoing industrial restructure can also benefit to help staff at risk of redundancy. Specific support is available for companies in the construction, tourism, nuclear, advanced manufacturing, rural economy, health and social care, professional services, cultural or logistics industries. The project is being delivered alongside Carlisle College through the EDGE partnership, which is funded by the European Social Fund, co-financed by the Education and Skills Funding Agency and supported by Cumbria Local Enterprise Partnership. Briony Fawcett, managing director at PHX Training, said: “Recruiting a member of staff is estimated to cost small businesses thousands of pounds in time, advertising, interviewing and training new roles. As a result of the difficulty to hire new staff, offering incentives to retain and upskill employees is vital and can save employers time and money. “These fully funded courses are free for SMEs and can work around an employee’s daily job, either being delivered as classroom or online courses. But the result is an employee who can then take on more responsibility and can grow with the company as the result of the investment in them as a person.” :: Everton FC has agreed a contract extension with kit maker hummel that will see the club continue its relationship with the iconic sportswear brand until the summer of 2024. Know What Are The Food Items Beneficial For Breast Cancer Patients – Health Shots https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/know-what-are-the-food-items-beneficial-for-breast-cancer-patients-health-shots/ Manasvi Jain Published on: 6 October 2022, 10:25 am IST October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Awareness is the only way forward towards prevention and cure. It is important to have a healthy diet for cancer patients and here’s what all you need to include in what you eat. To find out more about the right diet for breast cancer patients, Health Shots reached out to Anam Golandaz, a clinical dietitian who told us, “No single food or diet can prevent or cause breast cancer. But a person’s dietary choices can make a difference to their risk of developing breast cancer or their overall well-being while living with the condition.” It becomes extremely essential to have a healthy diet when suffering from breast cancer. Image courtesy: Shutterstock She further added, “A person can control other factors, such as smoking, physical activity levels, body weight, and diet. Some researchers have suggested that dietary factors could be responsible for 30–40 percent of all cancers.” Research suggests that these foods may lower your risk of cancer and inhibit cancer growth and progression: 1. Leafy green vegetables Green leafy vegetables such as kale, spinach, mustard greens and collard greens are some of the many dark leafy greens that can fight breast cancer. “They are loaded with antioxidants that can destroy cancer causing free radicals. In a 2012 study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, researchers found that women who ate dark leafy greens had a far lower breast cancer risk than women who didn’t eat these vegetables,” says Golandaz. Green leafy vegetables is the way to go for breast cancer patients! 2. Cruciferous vegetables According to the nutrition expert, cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli contain phytochemicals known as isothiocyanates and indoles which appear to have a protective effect against some types of cancer including breast cancer. It also inhibits cancer growth and progression. 3. Fatty fish Fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, and mackerel, are known for their effective health benefits. Golandaz says, “Their omega-3 fatty acid, selenium, and antioxidants contents may offer cancer-protective effects.” Fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and has anti-cancer properties! 4. Beans Beans are loaded with fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Specifically, their high fiber content may help in managing weight for breast cancer survivors, which is very challenging to do for them. “Breast cancer patients can include kidney beans, black beans, pinto beans, navy beans, and chick peas in their daily diet,” Golandaz suggests. 5. Allium vegetables Garlic, onions, and leeks come under allium vegetables that boast an array of nutrients, including organosulfur compounds, flavonoid and antioxidants. “Consumption of allium vegetables can help against the development of breast cancer. S-allylcysteine, a compound found in onions, has been suggested to suppress cell proliferation, adhesion and invasion in breast-cancer cells. Allicin, a component of garlic, has the ability to inhibit proliferation of breast cancer cell lines,” says Golandaz.
