What I Heard (Read) This Weekend….Oct 3, 2022 – Press Pros Magazine https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/what-i-heard-read-this-weekend-oct-3-2022-press-pros-magazine/ Halfway through the high school football season, there’s a reality to what we’re watching that few admit to publicly.  That the empty seats we wrote about recently have nothing to do with the football, itself.  Rather, it’s the uncertainty of what lies ahead. I realize that there are many who believe like my grandmother, who always said, “If you don’t have something good to say, don’t say anything at all.” She was talking about people, of course…that if you can’t say something nice about someone keep your thoughts to yourself.  But it’s not always people, and I dare say that there’s many who believe…if there’s anything you don’t like you just suffer in silence!  We learn from birth, for instance, that you don’t talk about religion and politics. But there’s another realization that does beg discussion as to why so many kids are choosing not to participate in sports this fall – why schools are leaking athletes, and the culture of thinking that promotes it.  I wrote about it in our recent September 19 column on empty seats under the Friday night lights.  Readers responded, some of which we shared in last week’s ‘Reader Speaks’ post. And this past weekend – this past week – there was more response from readers who were more than a bit concerned about how, and if, we get the numbers back – kids playing sports, and people in the seats to watch them. A reality!  A lot of them question the current culture – inflation, the economy, and a general change in social priorities.  Some ask…are we even giving kids a chance to just be kids? “I’m sad about things that I didn’t used to feel,”  said one writer, from here in Miami County.  “I played sports to have fun.  It was encouraging.  But it’s not encouraging now when you see barely enough kids to have a team.” Some point to the topics we hear daily on the evening news.  The cost of things, and fear about whether it’s safe to even leave the house, even in the smallest communities. “It’s hard to trust.  You don’t know if you’re safe, even out in the country,”  wrote a reader from Gallia County. The economy, gas prices, and the feeling that things are generally upside down are making people speak up…who have NEVER before spoken! “Kids got a job during Covid and got out of the habit of playing sports,”  from an email following that September 19 column on empty seats.  “They want money.” It’s true.  Some now choose to work because they have a car and a phone, and the household budget can no longer support that.  Parents say…get a job.  So kids are working because there’s plenty of jobs, particularly in some smaller, rural districts.  They make money instead of  playing football – different priorities.  Not every community, of course.  But enough that you notice. Barcodes needed on phones to get into the games make it inconvenient for many senior citizens. That person wrote.  “Cash spends. Standing on the sidelines and waiting for a chance to play doesn’t put gas in the car.” Traditional priorities are on trial, with uncertainty over what comes next.  While some preach renewable energy…most favor renewing strong communities and traditional values;  of how do we get back to a predictable standard of living and a predictable future? “I can’t raise a family and run my house the way we’re headed,”  a neighbor shared recently.  “Progress doesn’t make sense when you can’t make progress at home.” Other issues would make you sad, as that writer suggested – forgiveness for college loans that means sharing the cost of paying back money you didn’t borrow; progress that doesn’t make sense when it stands in the way of progress at home. All of this casts a shadow on things taken for granted – traditions, even sports and the people who used to watch. “I don’t go to games because I can’t buy a ticket at the ticket booth,”  wrote another to last week’s ‘Reader Speaks’ post.  “If you’re a senior citizen it’s not that simple to go to a football game – not that easy to buy a ticket with your phone.” But it is to a teenager, who’s choosing whatever means necessary to pay for that phone.  Culture has won them over…which only adds to the fear, and uncertainty for the future. Grandma wouldn’t like it.  People with little good to say. And they’re more willing to say it…than they’ve ever been before!

How Brands And Advertisers Can Build Kid-Friendly Experiences For The Metaverse The Drum
How Brands And Advertisers Can Build Kid-Friendly Experiences For The Metaverse – The Drum https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/how-brands-and-advertisers-can-build-kid-friendly-experiences-for-the-metaverse-the-drum/ Investing in experiences that are designed with all audiences in mind will help ensure we are collectively creating a welcoming metaverse for all, writes SuperAwesome CEO Dylan Collins. The metaverse will be a place where people of all ages meet, compete, create, and take part in events just like they do in the physical world. As the metaverse is built, it won’t just be the work of a single company – but the collective work of many. And, as we build out the metaverse collectively, it’s on all brands, advertisers and companies to work to ensure it is a safe experience for everyone it brings together. There are many existing and evolving laws and regulations that provide guidance for brands who are hoping to engage young audiences in the metaverse, from COPPA in the United States, to GDPR-K in the EU and the Age Appropriate Design Code in the UK. Brands that focus on compliance with these laws coupled with a curated strategy built on principles of data-minimization and age-appropriate design will be well positioned to create metaverse experiences that are kid, teen and brand-safe. Kids are becoming increasingly social when going online, with many turning to gaming as a way to hang out and chat with their friends. According to a recent study from SuperAwesome, 90% of children aged 6-16 identify as gamers. And when young audiences go online to game, they are complementing this with other social experiences: according to that same study, 65% of tweens (ages 10-12) are messaging friends and playing games at the same time, and that percentage only grows with the young teen (ages 13-16) audience. Many brands have already taken notice of this trend, adapting their strategy to include social gaming activations for young audiences across platforms like Roblox and Minecraft. When building for these platforms – especially when focusing on younger audiences – it’s important to implement safeguards from the start that make it possible for kids to play and socialize safely, while designing environments and experiences that take their preferences into account. Considerations for building kid-safe online experiences Kids and young teens seek different ways to interact with content, both actively and passively. Beyond the gameplay itself, games can serve as an engine for community building and foster positivity. Technology that minimizes toxicity in environments built for young audiences is also essential. Our research tells us that while kids seek the recognition, excitement, and social experience that gaming can bring them, they want to enjoy these experiences in a safe and respectful environment. Children also prefer platforms that are designed for them and for their peers. In a 2020 study, 88% of participating kids in the US reported that they preferred social platforms meant only for young audiences. It’s with this in mind that we at SuperAwesome offer PopJam, a social sharing space specifically designed for young audiences. To meet this audience where they are, we’ve created a moderated and welcoming environment that kids are able to enjoy without many of the downsides they encounter on adult-oriented social platforms. PopJam members are not able to share photos of themselves or post personal information, and the platform filters out negative language in order to create safe, non-toxic social spaces. With PopJam, brands are able to build kid-oriented content, including filters and stickers, quizzes and polls, and fun mini-games – all in a kid-friendly and moderated environment. Brands are already using PopJam to deliver interactive and kid-appropriate content, housed on their own branded channels while building their audience, like Penguin Random House, who was able to grow more followers than any other US publishing channel on PopJam. And while PopJam is one way for brands to deliver kid-safe social experiences, many of these best practices can be applied to any brand activation for young audiences. Responsible video content and engaging creators In addition to connecting in games and digital social spaces, children and teens are spending more and more time consuming video and streaming content. While video content is a great way to meet kids where they’re at, it is important for brands and advertisers creating video content to be mindful of what kind of video content they create and promote. Creating age-appropriate content protects both advertisers and their viewers – and it doesn’t require as much effort as you might think. Brands and advertisers can create content that appeals to all ages by avoiding the use of swearing or inappropriate slang, not promoting unhealthy habits (such as cigarettes, drugs or alcohol) and refraining from using visuals that portray realistic violence and gore. There are also tech services advertisers and brands can use to ensure your promotional video content is only being shown on brand-safe and audience-appropriate channels. For example, SuperAwesome’s Kid Social Video (KSV) helps brands ensure that when they advertise on YouTube their content is only showing up in videos that are a safe, relevant match for that brand, as well as the kids and families they’d most like to reach. Our human and AI moderation has reviewed over 182 million pieces of youth-oriented media and we apply approximately 65 criteria for vetting content in addition to YouTube’s filters to help ensure age-appropriate digital experiences for your brand. Brands looking to create kid-safe video content can also follow advertising standards based on the best practices set by self-regulatory and standards bodies like the Children’s Advertising Review Unit (CARU), which was created in the US to help companies comply with laws and guidelines that protect children under age 13 from deceptive or inappropriate advertising, or the relevant sections of the CAP and BCAP codes published by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) in the UK. There’s no one-size-fits all approach when it comes to young audiences, but keeping these principles and best practices in mind is a good place to start. So whether you’re building a gaming activation to inspire young builders, launching a new way for teens to connect with your brand or creating an influencer campaign for your newest product, investing in experiences that are designed with all audiences in mind will help ensure we are collectively creating a welcoming metaverse for all.

16 Kitchen Products You Need For Cooking Holiday Dinner Bustle
16 Kitchen Products You Need For Cooking Holiday Dinner – Bustle https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/16-kitchen-products-you-need-for-cooking-holiday-dinner-bustle/ Cooking a multi-course meal for the holidays in a tiny kitchen might seem like a feat that requires absurd amounts of precision and finesse. But it is possible with some clever use of your space — and a plan for cooking your dishes in the right order so you’re not rushing at the last minute to serve your guests. “Holiday cooking can be a bit hectic, but if you have a list of the dishes you are preparing you can organize a well-executed holiday meal,” says Patti Delgado, executive chef at Vibrant, a restaurant in Houston, Texas. The good news is that you don’t have to leave all the cooking for the day of your occasion and can use some time leading up to your event to get things started. Read as: procrastination has no place here. “I always leave the main dishes (or protein dish) and also fresh items such as salads or pickled herbs for the day of the event,” Delgado says. “But I give myself a head start with sauces, vinaigrettes, and casseroles because they tend to develop deeper flavor [over time].” For these, she says you can make them three days in advance. For side dishes like compotes or pickled veggies, Delgado says you can make them five days in advance — just be sure to keep them fresh in an airtight container. On the day of the event, Delgado advises you cook the proteins first before any other dishes so that they have some time to rest before you carve them up and serve. Now that you’ve got a kitchen plan, here’s a list of space-saving gadgets that will make your small kitchen seem more spacious. A cute canister for spoons, spatulas, and whisks might seem tidy but it takes up valuable counter space that you’ll need when preparing a holiday meal. Attach a pair of these rotating hooks to the underside of your cabinets to reclaim space and keep instruments at the ready. Top Review: “I like it, they keep the utensils up out of the way. Great for keeping clutter down.” If you’re running out of counter space and need to put a hot pan or a platter out to rest, try this silicone mat as a heat-resistant trivet. When you’re not cooking up a storm for the holidays, you can also use it as a regular dish-drying mat. Top Review: “I bought this to protect the edge of my black granite at the sink. But it has so many uses. It is a drain for dishes, a hot plate, and a workspace. Silicone is a wonderful product.” Whether you’re baking up multiple pies or batches of cookies or simply need another place to store a hot dish until it gets to the table, this three-tier cooling rack does the job. Set it up on a table or countertop and you can stack three dishes or pans without taking up a ton of space — you can also use just one rack if that’s all you need. Top Review: “I love that they are stackable and if you only need one then you don’t have to have all three out. Ideal for cooling cookies and cakes.” Your stove is the workhorse of the kitchen. Put it to good use even when the burners are off with this bamboo stovetop cover. Simply place the board over cool burners — it works on gas and electric stoves — to convert your appliance into more prep space. Top Review: “This adds a nice amount of counter space for our apartment’s smaller kitchen.“ Cutting boards are a key tool for any at-home chef. If you’re working on multiple courses, you’ll likely have several boards going at once. This over-the-sink cutting board lengthens your counter space while also giving you easy access to washing vegetables and dumping peels into the sink or disposal for quick cleanup. Top Review: “Chunky, well made and durable…yes it’s [a] chopping board but this is a good one compared to others I have owned.” Even with various digital devices with timers, an old-school kitchen timer makes it easy to keep you and your food on a schedule. This two-pack digital timer helps to keep track of multiple dishes, plus it’s magnetic — just pop it on your refrigerator and it’s go time. Top Review: “This is a handy set of digital timers that work well in cooking.” Annoyed by the gap between your cabinets and appliances? This slimline rollout shelf unit gives you practically a whole other cabinet’s worth of storage. Use it to store dry goods, spices, cooking oils, utensils, and more. Slide it out when you’re cooking and slide it right back in when you’re done to make the most efficient use of your kitchen space. Top Review: “[T]his is perfect! it turned this awkward space into a usable space.” Clear up the clutter on your counters with this multi-tiered corner bamboo shelf. You can adjust the shelves in the direction you want to quickly organize oil, bottles, spices, kitchen utensils, and more. Top Review: “This is perfect for the corner of the counter in my tiny kitchen. I have so much more room now!” You’ve likely seen the Always Pan pop up in your social media feed — we’ve even spotted it in a cameo in Hulu’s hit show The Bear. This multi-use cookware also deserves a spot in your kitchen. The Always Pan replaces a frying pan, sauté pan, steamer, and skillet, among others. Plus, it comes in beautiful, bright colors that you won’t mind leaving out on your stovetop when not in use — even though you will be able to fit it comfortably in your cabinets, too. Top Review: “Love it! So far it’s my go-to pan for almost everything.” It’s natural to want to have your go-to spices within easy reach when you need a pinch of this and a dash of that. This magnetic spice rack sticks right on your refrigerator so you won’t have to clog up the cabinets or countertop with bottles — plus there’s a hook so you can hang a spoon, cooking mitt, or another small utensil. Top Review: “Very pleased with the strength of the magnets on these shelves. They can hold a lot of weight, no problem.” Why have five utensils when you can have this one that works as a slotted spoon, solid spoon, spatula, turner, and slicer? You just cleared out your utensil caddy thanks to this handy kitchen gadget. Top Review: “The best kitchen utensil I never knew I needed.” If you’re dishing up pasta, you know that a traditional colander can take over your sink. This pot strainer does all the work of a regular colander with only a fraction of the size. It’s good for pots, pans, and bowls — just snap it on and pour out the liquid. You could even get a couple of these handy gadgets if you use them often and they still wouldn’t take up as much space as a regular colander. Top Review: “Clips easily to all of my pots and works perfectly as it should.” Your kitchen backsplash isn’t just for decoration anymore. Put it to use with this elegant-looking magnetized knife holder that can hold up a butcher block’s worth of knives. Your countertop will thank you for the breathing room. Top Review: “Not only is the wood a beautiful addition to my kitchen, the magnet is powerful enough to securely hold a 10-inch, three-pound chef’s knife and four other heavy steel knives with zero wobble nor give.” If your utensil caddy is stuffed to the point that it’s hard to reach that ladle or spatula, try this compact standing tool set. This sleek set of five nylon utensils nestles into the ladle, which is magnetized to an upright stand that takes up minimal space. Top Review: “This ended up being perfect for my small student apartment with minimal counter space. They are durable, easy to clean, and look great.” This over-the-sink colander makes it easy to wash vegetables and fruit and even drain cooked pasta. You can even use it to dry kitchen utensils after you’ve washed them to relieve clutter from your dish drying rack. Top Review: “This product is great! It’s super easy and versatile.” This silicone-coated stainless steel gadget doubles as an over-the-sink dish drying rack and a heat-resistant trivet, so you’ve got yet another place to put that hot pot of food as you’re preparing your meal. Roll it up when you’re finished and stow it in a drawer until next time. Top Review: “This roll-up dish drying rack has become a necessity in my kitchen! I don’t have a lot of counter space so turning a portion of my sink as a drying space for large items has been wonderful.” Source: Patti Delgado, executive chef at Vibrant.

Indian Crypto Exchange WazirX Lays Off 40% Of Workforce – Cryptonews https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/indian-crypto-exchange-wazirx-lays-off-40-of-workforce-cryptonews/ Source: Adobe/sdx15 Major Indian crypto exchange WazirX has laid off about 40% of its employees, citing a fall in trading volumes due to the bear market and the regulatory climate in India.  Local news outlet the Economic Times reports that the figure equates to around 50 to 70 employees of the exchanges around 150 employees. WazirX said in a statement that the move will help it maintain financial stability and continue to serve its customers.  “The Indian crypto industry has had its unique problems with respect to taxes, regulations, and banking access. This has led to a dramatic fall in volumes in all Indian crypto exchanges… As India’s No 1. exchange, our priority is to be financially stable and to continue serving our customers. To achieve this, we’ve had to reduce our staff to weather the crypto winter,” the statement read.   WazirX further noted that it is not new to crypto bear markets as it lived through the 2018 cycle. At the time, it doubled down and built its innovative peer-to-peer engine. This is one reason it is confident that it will come out stronger when the market inevitably turns bullish.  The affected employees have already been contacted and will be compensated with about 45 days’ pay as well as other support, the report notes. They cut across several departments including customer support and HR where managers, analysts, and associate managers/team leaders were among the axed personnel.  WazirX facing other troubles amid the crypto bear market  Added to the global crypto market downturn and India’s tax laws which have caused turmoil for WazirX, the company is also in other controversies. The exchange’s co-Founder Nischal Shetty has been embroiled in an online battle with Binance CEO Changpeng Zhou (also CZ).  CZ took to Twitter to state that Binance is not linked to WazirX as is commonly believed as a purchase transaction was never completed. Nischal has debunked the claim, pointing to WazirX’s terms of service. He also stated that Binance owns the exchanges domain name, has root access to its AWS servers, and owns all its crypto assets and crypto profits as well.   Meanwhile, the exchange also just emerged successful from a dispute with the Enforcement Department (ED) – India’s financial crime-fighting agency – which froze its accounts for more than a month. Reuters reports that following an investigation, the ED has unfrozen assets worth up $8.16 million which it previously linked to suspicious transactions.

Canada Jetlines Announces Closing Of Financing – Business Wire https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/canada-jetlines-announces-closing-of-financing-business-wire/ TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Canada Jetlines Operations Ltd. (NEO: CJET) (“Canada Jetlines” or the “Company”) the new, all-Canadian, leisure airline, is pleased to announce that on September 30, 2022 it closed its non-brokered private placement to raise gross proceeds of $1,889,497.22 (the “Offering”). The Offering consisted of units issued at $0.255 per unit (each a “Unit”). Each Unit consists of one common or variable voting share (each a “Share”) and one half of one warrant (each whole warrant a “Warrant”). Each Warrant entitles the holder thereof to purchase an additional Share (each a “Warrant Share”) for a period of 24 months after closing at a price of $0.40 per Warrant Share. In order to encourage share ownership by employees of the Company, the Company offered all of its employees that chance to participate in the Offering with a bonus incentive. Employees that participated in the Offering received one additional Unit (each a “Bonus Unit”) for every six Units subscribed for in the Offering, without payment of additional consideration. A total of 8,151,525 Units (including Bonus Units) were issued in the Offering with employees participating for $1.134 million of the Offering. The Company also paid $14,886.90 in finder’s fees and issued 58,380 Warrants to finders with respect to certain non-employee investors who participated in the Offering. The Company intends to use the net proceeds of the Offering and the Loan for aircraft acquisition, general corporate and working capital purposes. To demonstrate continued support of the Company, the Company’s founding shareholder, Global Crossing Airlines Group Inc. participated in the Offering and acquired 784,314 Units for proceeds of $200,000.07, and the Company’s Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Commercial Officer and Chief Operating Officer and their associates participated in the Offering and acquired 2,972,128 Units for proceeds of $649,622.45. The Company did not file a material change report related to this financing more than 21 days before the expected closing of the Offering as required by MI 61-101 since the details of the participation by the related parties of the Company were not settled until shortly prior to the closing of the Offering and the Company wished to close on an expedited basis for sound business reasons. Are Seniors Getting Shortchanged By Social Security COLAs? – 69News WFMZ-TV https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/are-seniors-getting-shortchanged-by-social-security-colas-69news-wfmz-tv/ As the calendar turns to October, Social Security recipients are eagerly awaiting the 2023 cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Many seniors have been struggling under the weight of this year’s high inflation, even as some costs, such as gas prices, have come down in recent months. Experts are now expecting an 8.7% raise for seniors in 2023. The final figure will be determined by the July, August, and upcoming September Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers. The CPI-W is related to the traditional CPI-U, but with slightly different weightings. Fortunately, the CPI-W looks to be slightly more generous than the CPI-U this year. But is the CPI-W really capturing the costs most seniors bear? Some politicians say no and are proposing using an even more generous metric. Image source: Getty Images. COLAs haven’t kept up with real costs to seniors According to an ongoing study by The Senior Citizens League, a nonpartisan Senior advocacy group, true costs of living for seniors have risen much more than COLAs as calculated by the CPI-W. Between 2000 and March 2022, the study found that while costs to seniors rose a cumulative 130%, Social Security payments rose only 64%. That amounts to a 40% decline in buying power over that time. The big difference comes down to higher Medicare premiums and out-of-pocket medical expenses seniors pay, which are not captured to the same extent by the CPI-W. Seniors 65 and older typically pay more than twice as much on medical care as the general population. Medical costs have been especially problematic of late. In the most recent August CPI report, medical services inflation rose 0.8% month over month, accelerating over July, and was one of the main factors behind the higher-than-expected CPI last month. The main culprit is rampant nursing shortages and resulting wage inflation, probably a consequence of the stressful pandemic. Meet the CPI-E There are currently several proposals bouncing around Congress to address this issue, all from Democratic lawmakers in the House and Senate. While details differ, one thing they have in common is that each bill proposes replacing the CPI-W with the Experimental CPI for Americans 62 Years of Age and Older, or CPI-E. The CPI-E came out of a 1987 amendment to the Older Americans Act of 1965, whereby Congress directed the Bureau of Labor Statistics to calculate average annual cost increases for Americans 62 and up. The BLS then began studying data going back to 1982 and has made CPI-E calculations ever since. Between 1983 and 2021, the CPI-E rose at a 2.8% annualized rate, compared with a 2.6% rate for the CPI-W. While the CPI-E isn’t higher every single year, that annualized average gain adds up to a very significant difference when compounded over nearly 40 years. Why isn’t the CPI-E used already, and why is it called “experimental?” For one, the CPI-E uses a smaller sample than the CPI-W, since the 62-and-older population is smaller than the general population. Seniors’ idiosyncratic spending habits also vary widely and are somewhat difficult to track. So the CPI-E could have a larger room for error. Second, since the CPI-E study was only commissioned in 1987, there needed to be some passage of time before the long-term trajectory of the CPI-E versus the CPI-W became apparent. Finally, since Congress was already using the CPI-W, it would take politicians changing the law in order to increase benefits. That’s difficult to do, especially since Social Security is already running into funding problems. Currently, the Social Security Administration projects the program will run out of money in 2035. Several Democratic lawmakers are proposing fixes today Three recently proposed Democratic bills, including the Social Security Expansion Act, the Protecting and Preserving Social Security Act, and the Social Security 2100 Act, are now making their way through Congress. Each differs in certain ways, but all have two things in common. First, each proposes larger benefits, including replacing the CPI-W with the CPI-E. Second, each proposes raising payroll taxes on wealthier Americans to fund the increased benefits and extend the life of the program. Currently, Americans pay payroll taxes on only the first $147,000 of income. All three bills would raise that cap to varying degrees. Social Security recipients as well those in their late 40s and 50s who will soon have to deal with the funding gap should closely monitor the progress of these bills in Congress. Given that this is a midterm election year, those concerned should research where your representative and senator stands on this important issue as well. The $18,984 Social Security bonus most retirees completely overlook If you’re like most Americans, you’re a few years (or more) behind on your retirement savings. NASCAR At Talladega Results: Chase Elliott Seals Spot In Round Of 8 With Daring Final Lap Move Sporting News
NASCAR At Talladega Results: Chase Elliott Seals Spot In Round Of 8 With Daring Final Lap Move Sporting News
NASCAR At Talladega Results: Chase Elliott Seals Spot In Round Of 8 With Daring Final Lap Move – Sporting News https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nascar-at-talladega-results-chase-elliott-seals-spot-in-round-of-8-with-daring-final-lap-move-sporting-news/ Sunday’s race at Talladega was fairly clean, with only a handful of caution flags being waved over the course of the day. So, when Daniel Hemric’s No. 16 car stalled out on pit road with six laps to go, the pressure was on for those at the front of the pack. In the end, it was Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott battling for that checkered flag. And although it looked like it was Blaney’s race to lose for much of the day, it was Elliott who made all the right moves in the final two laps. And it was the Hendrick Motorsports driver who rolled into victory lane, sealing his spot in the Round of 8. For all of Elliott’s exploits, Sunday’s victory wasn’t just on him. Erik Jones gave him a strong push in the final lap, giving him just the momentum he needed to outpace Blaney. Ross Chastain and Todd Gilliland offered additional support in the outside lane, something Elliott desperately needed to pass Blaney on the back stretch. An overhead look at how Chase Elliott got by Ryan Blaney for the win. #NASCAR pic.twitter.com/48SvS2ZreA — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 2, 2022 To Blaney’s credit, he ran about as clean a race as one could expect at the ‘Dega. Elliott just had a few more tricks up his sleeve to get the job done. — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 2, 2022 Sitting with the second-most playoff points (32 points above the cut line), Blaney is in solid shape heading into the final Round of 12 race. Still, it could have all been so much different, if not for Elliott’s impressive final-lap antics. The Sporting News tracked live updates from Sunday’s playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway. Below are all the highlights and results from the YellaWood 500 as they happened. NASCAR at Talladega live updates, results, highlights (All times Eastern) 5:20 p.m.: Blaney’s out in front! Elliott trying to make a move on the outside! It’s a big push from Jones and it’s Blaney and Elliott looking for it with one lap left. They’re on the stretch and it’s Elliott with the lead. It looks like Elliott is going to do it…and he does! Chase Elliott wins at Talladega and gets himself a spot in the next round of the playoffs. 5:19 p.m.: Two laps left, race restart on the horizon and lots and lots of dirty air. Time to get clutch. 5:11 p.m.: Jones and Blaney are going back-and-forth for first place. Jones has the edge at the moment. However, looks like a caution flag was waved for Daniel Hemric’s No. 16 car, whose car is stuck in pit road. That’s great news for Blaney, who can get some gas in his whip. Six laps left and the first caution flag in ages. Things are about to get spicy. 5:08 p.m.: What a race for Todd Gilliland, but the way! He’s in fourth place and looks well-positioned for a career-best showing in a Cup Series race. Not too shabby for the talented 22-year old. 5:05 p.m.: Interesting thing to look out for: the driver who is up front is apparently using more fuel. It could get very unchy for Blaney in the final few laps. Remember, Reddick was leading for much of Stage 2 before running out of fuel in the final lap. 5:03 p.m.: Chastain making a move for the inside lane. However, Blaney got the block in, keeping his lead in the process. It is tight with 16 laps left. 4:57 p.m.: Keselowski headed to pit road. Getting wide out at the back of the pack. However, it’s still Blaney and Chastain sitting out in front as we head to lap 166. 4:55 p.m.: Lead drivers are headed to pit road. It’s Larson, Elliott, and Hamlin among those who pitted. 26 laps left? Is that enough time for drivers to last? 4:45 p.m.: Blaney takes the lead! Looks like the No. 12 car was riding up the track. Keselowski, who sat in third, was delicate in his pushing with Blaney, forcing Chastain to relinquish his spot to block Hamlin, who was making his dash to the front. One move can change everything at Talladega. 4:42 p.m.: Bell, who once sat as far back as 33rd place, has rebounded fairly well in Stage 2. He’s up to 15th place and surging, putting himself in for a chance at a top-ten finish. 4:36 p.m.: Chastain still holds the lead. However, Hamlin is slowly but surely edging up the pack in the inside lane. Looks like more and more drivers are mimicking Hamlin’s movements in an effort to put themselves in decent position come the final few laps of the race. 4:31 p.m.: Hamlin sat right behind Bubba Wallace, who is currently in eighth. Both drivers are in the inside lane and trying to make a move for the front of the pack. However, at the moment it’s Chastain leading the chase, followed by Blaney and Keselowski — all of whom are on the outside lane at the moment. 51 laps to go. Plenty of time to make a move. 4:28 p.m.: Chastain and Blaney are duking it out for first place at the moment. Currently, it’s Chastain who holds the advantage. However, Blaney is within a tenth of a second, so not much between the drivers. 4:26 p.m.: Here’s how things stand in the playoff standings after Stage 2. Much to consider but it’s been an underwhelming run so far for Byron and Bell. Points after second stage (not incl where they run as far as points for finish): Logano +36, Larson +27 Blaney +25, Chastain +23, Elliott +22, Hamlin +17, Suarez +11, Briscoe +1, Cindric -1, Byron -9, Bell -26, Bowman -27 — Bob Pockrass (@bobpockrass) October 2, 2022 4:24 p.m.: The final stage is underway at Talladega! Elliott, Jones and Larson leading the pack! 4:11 p.m.: Reddick and Larson are even with a little less than a lap left. Looks like Larson is being pushed by Elliott. Reddick pushed into the wall! It’s between Elliott and Larson and…it’s Elliott who takes the green flag! Chase Elliott to the outside for the Stage 2 win! #NASCAR pic.twitter.com/rU6oChmWWo — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 2, 2022 4:10 p.m.: Larson, Elliott and Reddick are the top three with two laps to go. Nice and tight in the back straightaway. This is going to be fun. 4:05 p.m.: Larson and Reddick battling for first place with seven laps to go. Very tight up front. Further back in the pack, one to watch is Christopher Bell. Nearly wrecked at pit road and is currently locked in 30th place. He’s down a lap, but with just a few laps left before the end of Stage 2, he will get another chance to pit soon enough and should get back on the lead lap fairly soon. Could have been so much worse for the Joe Gibbs Racing driver. 3:57 p.m.: It looks like the last set of drivers are headed to pit road. That includes Almirola, who has led for much Stage 2. Looks like Tyler Reddick will pull into the front. 3:54 p.m.: Bell losing some serious draft in pit road. His tires got to stalling as he pulled into pit road, spinning out as he made his entry. He’ll be penalized for going into pit road too fast and looks unlikely to nab any stage points in Stage 2. That’s big for a racer who entered today’s race outside of the cut line. 3:50 p.m.: Almirola still setting the pact through 37 laps of the second stage. Lots of stage left, but interestingly enough: only three playoff drivers currently sit in the top-ten (Larson in 4th, Chastain in 7th and Elliott in 9th). Seems postseason participants are hoping the conservative approach pays dividends at the ‘Mega. 3:41 p.m.: Almirola back out in front. Harvick is a little less than .1 seconds behind him. 34 laps to go in Stage 2. Plenty of time for sparks to fly at Talladega Superspeedway. 3:31 p.m.: Things are getting wild at the front of the pack. Blaney shrugged into Brad Keselowski, who proceeded to clip the wall. Blaney and Keselowski have decided to drop down the field ever so slightly. Seems experienced drivers are sensing a wreck could be coming soon. 3:30 p.m.: Blaney is doing a great job blocking cars off out front. He’s doing exactly what he need to do to keep his lead. 3:26 p.m.: Blaney has followed up his strong Stage 1 showing with a solid display through the first nine laps of Stage 2. He’s got a .06-second lead over Kevin Harvick’s No. 4 car. Things are quite competitive early in the second stage. 3:25 p.m.: Stage 2 is off and it’s Kyle Larson who is running up front. 3:14 p.m.: And it’s Ryan Blaney who takes Stage 1! Impressive run on the final lap by the Team Penske driver. He made a dash for the front after Turn 4 and slipped beyond Hamlin’s grasp by a couple of feet. — NASCAR on NBC (@NASCARonNBC) October 2, 2022 Byron, who stayed near the top for much of the opening stage, finished 11th. That means he won’t get any stage points. 3:12 p.m.: Hamlin takes it back! Gave Byron two bumps, who bizarrely proceeded to move out the way and let Hamlin get out in front. Two laps to go and it’s Hamlin with the lead! 3:11 p.m.: Byron takes the lead! He crossed over into the inside line, pacing past Hamlin in the process. Looks like the Hendrick Motorsport driver is making his move for the front. 3:08 p.m.: Hamlin and Byron still going back-and-forth for first place. Seven laps left before the end of Stage 1 and sides are still looking for that all-important track position.  2:53 p.m.: It’s been an enthralling first 43 laps. Hamlin has a .1-second lead over Byron, but it seems both are working with one another to move themselves up the pack. Racing culture is so interesting. 2:48 p.m.: Hamlin into the lead! Denny came out of nowhere to pace past Almirola to take first place. William Byron lurking one spot away. Could be something to watch given the feud between Hamlin and Byron last week. 2:45 p.m.: Kyle Busch is making his mark early. The No. 18 car is locked in competition with Suarez, Elliott and Aric Almirola for first place. Solid stuff for the non-playoff driver. 2:43 p.m.: Suarez with the early lead after the race restart. He’s got the slightest of edges over Hendrick Moto...

Hollywood And The Metaverses Effect On Pharmas Content Pharmaphorum
Hollywood And The Metaverses Effect On Pharmas Content Pharmaphorum
Hollywood And The Metaverse’s Effect On Pharma’s Content – – Pharmaphorum https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/hollywood-and-the-metaverses-effect-on-pharmas-content-pharmaphorum/ Gaurav Kapoor, co-founder and executive vice president of Indegene, tells pharmaphorum how pharma can take lessons from the entertainment industry and prepare for the Metaverse to enhance content engagement. Pharma companies’ customer communication methods require reimagining as technology progresses. Kapoor says, now, pharma can learn from the on-demand nature of content distribution that Hollywood utilises and simultaneously prepare for future needs in content delivery. “One of our senior clients in big pharma told us, ‘We don’t make pills. Nobody buys pills. Patients buy stories. Patients buy promises. So, patients buy content.’ So, that was where we strengthened ourselves and knew Indegene should be the go-to partner for content,” Kapoor states. Indegene focuses on helping pharma launch its products using technology and compliance frameworks to become 100% compliant, Kapoor explains. It does so by offering a modern way of building content. Currently, pharma is primarily using digital means to connect with its customers, and Kapoor says it’s discovering from Hollywood how to create engaging content that is more customer focused. Hollywood Over the past decade, the entertainment industry has changed dramatically. Traditionally, content was delivered at movie theatres and on primetime TV. It’s now become an on-demand experience focused on customer-centricity. “TV used to be very brand-centric. The industry has moved customer-centric, with content distributed based on age groups and personas. Pharma is moving into that space with social media and digital, but it needs to learn from Hollywood and TV and use more on-demand content,” Kapoor notes. The entertainment industry has also moved from brand-centric content to experiential content, designed to immerse its audience in its message by attempting to create deep emotional connections between the customer and the brand. Pharma hasn’t fully moved into the experiential content space and is stuck on brand-centric content, which is not as engaging as experiential content that can make one question how a product impacts their life and how it helps doctors treat their patients better, Kapoor reasons. “If you look at the content we get on TV and TV ads, if you remove the brand, pretty much all the ads look to me the same. We must move towards customer-centric related problems and solving those problems,” Kapoor states. There’s been a significant focus on digital affinity – what channels people like, where they click on mobile, laptop, iPad, etc. “Content affinity is more critical than digital affinity. Let’s say someone receives an email but will not open it because of the subject line. If the subject line shows the content one likes, they will open the email. People used to say email is effective. Email is not effective. The email doesn’t matter. It’s about the content in the email. So, the content is actually the channel,” Kapoor says. Indegene has profiled 1.8 million physicians in the US, based on digital affinity, content affinity, behaviour affinity, and network affinity (meaning which individuals the physicians follow on their social networks). “Network, behaviour, content, and the digital combined is where we think the world is going in content and to drive success,” Kapoor maintains. Kapoor says pharma also needs to understand that measurement of success through content distribution methods matters as well, and that the entire content success measurement process is changing. Indegene bought the company DT Consulting, which is about the “experience score.” It measures brand success by using its Customer Experience Quotient (CEQ). “The whole needle of measuring clicks and open rates on an email and how many viewers is going away. It’s all moving towards what the score is on the customer experience,” Kapoor explains. The content experience is changing and as technology progresses, so does the necessity for rethinking how companies will distribute content in the future. The Metaverse The rise of new technologies will change content delivery, and Kapoor anticipates the Metaverse will dramatically impact content output and dispersal: “The Metaverse is coming. Meta is going to be a place where patients, consumers, and doctors all converge. They can all talk together, and it will become a globalised world.” For example, someone with a rare disease in Brazil or Germany will be able to connect with an HCP in the US or UK. Language barriers will be non-existent because online translators can dynamically translate without issue. The Metaverse will bring a new dimension to healthcare and impact how patients will be treated by converging technology, content, and imagery. Experiential, immersive education will allow for greater retention of information than reading a pamphlet or brochure. With virtual and augmented reality, one can go into the human body. Pharma could harness this technology to explain a drug’s effects. “We imagine a world where a doctor can go into a body, go into the different parts, use the different drugs and see how the drug will move over three months, six months, and create that simulation in a patient case, to train them that how a drug will move,” Kapoor states. A patient may step inside a 3D world where they can examine what a medication does to the body, how it will help their disease, and how their body will react to the drug. “That can only be done in a Meta world. It’s going to be immersive and engaging, very different kinds of content from the content we’re dealing with today,” Kapoor says. The content can then be precise because its analytics could be sophisticated. Companies are exploring how to collect data through eye tracking with virtual reality technology. Eye tracking will also allow companies to understand better what type of content connects with the consumer. “You could see what each doctor did, how much they consumed, what content they looked at, what they liked and didn’t like. The same with the patients – what they liked and didn’t like – and now you can do precision marketing,” Kapoor explains. Advertisements can be more tailored, and data collection within the Metaverse can allow for more personalised content that will greatly affect physicians and patients. Many benefits come with an increased understanding of drug effects on the body through on-demand and immersive content. Still, Kapoor says multiple barriers present in pharma will make it complicated for these ideas to come to fruition. The way pharma is regulated based on compliance is a considerable barrier to allowing such a change, though.  broken, siloed approach within pharma must be rectified to improve content turnaround time, especially within the MLR process. Kapoor states this is the biggest bottleneck to change. “Along with that, companies need to do advanced content analytics. Content analytics is critical. So, doing content analytics, smoothing out the MLR approval process, and having senior leadership push change: I would say these additions are critical for this dream to happen,” Kapoor posits. “Otherwise, this industry is not going to Meta or experiential selling for many years. This industry will be boring, then we’re not doing the right service to our patients because we’re not telling them what drugs can do for them, and we’re just defeating the purpose of that patient centricity.” About the interviewee Gaurav Kapoor is co-founder of Indegene and heads the company’s co-commercialisation business while also driving new business development. Over the last 20 years, Kapoor has led Indegene’s sales and business development efforts in the APAC region, including China and the European and North American regions. He is the architect of Indegene’s co-commercialisation capabilities and is responsible for partnering with senior commercial leaders of pharma, biotech, and medical device companies to help drive revenue growth for their products across their lifecycle. Taiwans Self-Defense Solves The U.S. Microchip Problem The Atlantic
Taiwans Self-Defense Solves The U.S. Microchip Problem The Atlantic
Taiwan’s Self-Defense Solves The U.S. Microchip Problem – The Atlantic https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/taiwans-self-defense-solves-the-u-s-microchip-problem-the-atlantic/ Taiwan’s domination of the microchip industry has been a boon to the global economy, but it now presents an acute challenge. Taiwan today manufactures most of the world’s microchips, which are in practically everything: cars, coffee makers, combine harvesters. The whole world hums with microelectronic components—including about 92 percent of all advanced microchips—that are made largely in a handful of factories on an island less than one-tenth the size of California. Little more than 100 miles away across a strait lies mainland China, which views Taiwan as a breakaway region and has vowed to bring it back under its control. Were China to seize Taiwan, one of two things could happen to the chip supply: The microchip factories could end up being controlled by China, or they could be destroyed in a conflict. Either way, a global catastrophe would ensue. In the first scenario, China could decide to limit access for the U.S. and its allies to advanced chips, significantly reducing American technological, economic, and military advantages. But if the second scenario came to pass, the world could experience an economic crisis the likes of which we have not seen since the Great Depression. Luckily, Taiwan is now watching and learning from Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion. And the lessons Taiwan is taking from that conflict suggest how the U.S. can help Taipei—and itself—avoid either dire outcome. Derek Thompson: The everything-is-weird economy One of the island’s major manufacturers is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Limited. An enterprise founded in 1987 through a government initiative, it now makes many of the world’s most essential microchips for Nvidia, Qualcomm, Apple, and thousands of other companies. Thirty-five years ago, when TSMC’s foundries were just getting started, the U.S. firm Intel made about 65 percent of the world’s advanced chips. Today Intel controls less than 10 percent, while TSMC’s share is 53 percent. To see why this matters, look no further than the U.S. auto industry, which forecast an estimated $210 billion in lost revenue last year after factory slowdowns caused by the pandemic led to bottlenecks in the supply chain for automobile chips. In the event of a conflict with China, the destruction of Taiwan’s microchip manufacturing would mean not a slowdown or a bottleneck but a sudden and complete stop of nearly two-thirds of the world’s supply for the industries that depend on it.One view about the risks associated with Taiwan’s near-monopoly in microchip manufacturing in the face of a looming, belligerent China is that it is still, in essence, a supply-chain problem. Therefore, the best way out of this potential catastrophe is to build up production elsewhere, including in the U.S. The recently passed bipartisan CHIPS Act, which will fund programs worth $53 billion, is explicit in its aim “to develop onshore domestic manufacturing of semiconductors critical to U.S. competitiveness and national security.” Another position on Taiwan is that this issue is a strategic military problem, and the best way to respond to an invasion by China would be for the U.S. to leap to Taiwan’s defense. President Joe Biden expressed this view when asked, in a recent interview on 60 Minutes, if U.S. forces would defend the island. “Yes,” he said, “if, in fact, there was an unprecedented attack.” Read: No more ‘strategic ambiguity’ on Taiwan The problem with these approaches is that they both, in their different ways, misapprehend the significance of time. The idea of replacing microchip imports with American-made products undervalues Taiwan’s 40-year head start with its microchip industry—and it took at least a decade for the island to become globally competitive. A similar lag will apply to the U.S., which will probably need several decades at least of further investments of the same scale as the CHIPS Act before it can manufacture domestically most of the microchips it requires. An additional complication is that TSMC’s operations have features that are hard to imagine replicating elsewhere. Its advanced-research division, for example, has engineers working in three shifts so that it can run 24 hours a day, seven days a week—“the Nightingale Army,” as they’re sometimes known, who are sacrificing themselves for this national purpose, Taiwan’s “silicon shield.” The time issue with the idea of leaping to Taiwan’s defense is that if China attacks, it could be too late. Should China invade, the coastal-based microchip factories could be destroyed by the time the U.S. military responded. The world would already be well on its way to plunging off an economic cliff. The U.S. does have a third option: make it too costly for China to invade Taiwan by enabling Taiwan to defend itself. Earlier this month, the Biden administration asked for, and Congress is expected to approve, a $1.1 billion arms sale to Taiwan. The package included anti-ship and air-to-air missiles, as well as an estimated $665 million to support Taiwan’s surveillance-radar program. But Taiwan probably needs more defenses to credibly deter an invasion. Taiwan has an unfortunate history of spending too much of its limited defense budget on expensive platforms such as fighter aircraft and surface ships—neither of which is likely to survive the first days of a war with China. Some of the same types of arms that the U.S. has agreed to sell to Taiwan are currently in use by Ukrainians in their defensive war against Russia. Even better, these sorts of systems—such as the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), drones, loitering munitions, anti-tank missiles, and sea mines—might be able to do the job at relatively low cost. For about a tenth of the investment of the CHIPS Act, Taiwan could build up a so-called porcupine defense with a “large number of small things.” Such a strategy, already proving successful in Ukraine, could yield results within a couple of years, rather than decades. One holdup in the process of arming Taiwan as quickly as America might like is a bottleneck in U.S. arms manufacturing caused by—you guessed it—microchips. The problem is temporary, but it only goes to underline what a priority it is for the U.S. to ensure that Taiwan has the right defense systems to project its own security, in the most timely way possible.

China Spends Holiday Lying Flat Amid Heavy Travel Restrictions Sixth Tone
China Spends Holiday ‘Lying Flat’ Amid Heavy Travel Restrictions – Sixth Tone https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/china-spends-holiday-lying-flat-amid-heavy-travel-restrictions-sixth-tone/ SHANGHAI — For this year’s National Day holiday, Zhao Zhiyan and her husband have decided to get away from it all. The couple plan to travel to a fancy hotel on the outskirts of Shanghai — around 20 kilometers from their apartment. Like millions of others, the pair are unable to travel beyond the city limits due to China’s strict pandemic controls. This trip will be the furthest they’ve ventured from home in 2022. Zhao feels lucky to be making even this short journey. She declines to reveal how much she spent to secure a spot in the five-star hotel; rooms in Shanghai’s upscale resorts are like gold dust this holiday. “We will stay in the hotel the whole time,” the 29-year-old told Sixth Tone. “We want to relax and have contact with as few people as possible.” Many in China plan to “lie flat” in local hotels this week, as the country has once again imposed heavy restrictions on long-distance travel for the seven-day public holiday. Authorities are being even more cautious than normal, with the historic 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China due to take place just days after the holiday ends. The Chinese mainland reported a total of 655 local infections on Sunday; nearly 80% of provincial-level governments discovered at least one case. Local authorities have issued repeated warnings against long-distance travel. Many employers and residential committees have imposed extra controls: Some have banned travel outright, while others have required people to provide a “valid reason” for travel in advance. People ride boats on West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, Oct. 2, 2022. VCG The restrictions have drastically curbed people’s travel plans. Chinese tech giant Meituan has described this week as a “local holiday,” with the majority of consumers planning to stay within their local area.  In a user survey, Meituan found that 70% of people do not plan to leave their city or province this week. Shopping, going to restaurants, and staying in local hotels and homestays are the most popular activities this holiday, the company said. Only 62,000 commercial flights are scheduled to take place during the National Day holiday, down over 22% compared with last year and nearly 40% compared with 2019. China’s trains are expected to handle just 68.5 million passenger trips between Sept. 28 and Oct. 8, whereas 110 million trips were made between Sept. 28 and Oct. 7 last year. Unable to take a vacation, many Chinese are instead scrambling to book luxurious “staycations” in nearby resorts. Online travel platform Trip.com reported Saturday that local bookings were up 98% on the first day of the holiday compared with the Mid-Autumn Festival last month. Nearly 60% of local hotel and homestay bookings were made by people born after 1990, the company added. Many hotels have hiked prices significantly for the holiday, the state-owned China News reported Saturday. In Beijing, one resort had increased its room rates from under 2,000 yuan ($280) per night to 3,888 yuan for Oct. 6; another from a few hundred yuan to an astonishing 5,000 yuan for Oct. 2, though the hotel denied this. Chen, a manager of a boutique homestay in east China’s Zhejiang province, told Sixth Tone Monday that they’d increased their room rates by around 300 yuan for the holiday, with prices ranging from 1,000 yuan to 2,000 yuan per night. “Our guests typically book a day or two in advance, and many drive from Shanghai,” Chen said. Prosus NV Terminates Agreement To Acquire Indian Payment Aggregator BillDesk The Indian Express
Prosus NV Terminates Agreement To Acquire Indian Payment Aggregator BillDesk The Indian Express
Prosus NV Terminates Agreement To Acquire Indian Payment Aggregator BillDesk – The Indian Express https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/prosus-nv-terminates-agreement-to-acquire-indian-payment-aggregator-billdesk-the-indian-express/ Dutch consumer internet conglomerate Prosus NV, which is the parent company of Indian fintech company PayU, Monday said it has terminated its agreement to acquire Indian payment aggregator BillDesk. The $4.7 billion deal that was announced in August last year, would have become the biggest fintech M&A deal in India if it had gone through, and proposed to merge BillDesk with PayU India. Notably, the companies had received approval from the Competition Commission of India (CCI) only last month. ‘Conditions not fulfilled’ “Closing of the transaction was subject to the fulfilment of various conditions precedent, including approval by the Competition Commission of India (CCI). PayU secured CCI approval on 5 September 2022. However, certain conditions precedent were not fulfilled by the 30 September 2022 long stop date, and the agreement has terminated automatically in accordance with its terms and, accordingly, the proposed transaction will not be implemented,” Prosus said in a statement. The company did not detail the unfulfilled conditions that led to the deal’s termination. An e-mail query sent to Prosus did not elicit a response. The Indian Express reached out to BillDesk co-founder MN Srinivasu, but he did not respond. On September 5, following the CCI approval PayU India said that the transaction involved “novel assessment by the CCI of dynamic digital markets”. “Prosus firmly believes that this acquisition of BillDesk will have significant pro-competitive benefits for the Indian economy and will strengthen the Indian digital payments market, which is fully regulated by the Reserve Bank of India. This acquisition by PayU of BillDesk is also consistent with the government of India’s Digital India mission and will benefit Indian merchants, government institutions and consumers,” Anirban Mukherjee, CEO, PayU India had said. Among largest payment gateway aggregators BillDesk, which was founded in 2000 by former consultants MN Srinivasu, Ajay Kaushal, and Karthik Ganpathy, is among the largest payment gateway aggregators in the country, handling more than half of all online billing transactions, according to industry estimates. Prior to the announcement last year, where Prosus said it would acquire BillDesk, the Mumbai-based payment aggregator had also been in talks with other fintech giants for an acquisition, including Paytm. The deal was expected to give an exit to BillDesk’s institutional investors — General Atlantic, Temasek Holdings, Visa, TA Associates, March Capital, and Clearstone Venture Partners — in addition to the three co-founders, who together held a 29.6% share in the company. Payment aggregators like BillDesk essentially bring together various payment systems such as credit or debit cards, net banking, UPI, and wallets on a single platform for online merchants to offer to their customers. According to industry estimates, BillDesk and Paytm together controlled a massive chunk of India’s payment gateway traffic. However, investors of BillDesk had been looking for an exit in the face of rising competition from, besides Paytm, a host of players including Infibeam, CCAvenue, PayU, and Razorpay. For the year ending March 2021, the company reported a net profit of Rs 271 crore, or around $37 million, making it a prime target for other payment businesses looking to grow inorganically. PayU is present in several payment segments — gateways, wallet, credit services — and even in the non-banking financial company (NBFC) space. Along the way, it has acquired or invested in several fintech startups including CitrusPay, ZestMoney, PaySense, and Wibmo. According to Prosus, which is a division of the South African multinational Naspers, the acquisition of BillDesk was to give a huge leg-up to PayU in India, with the post-deal group entity handling four billion transactions annually — four times PayU’s current level in India.

Not quite, not yet. It’s always a fun time when the Rams and 49ers get together. The most recent meeting of the two NFC West rivals resulted in an excellent NFC Championship Game. Early in the 2022 season, though, neither team has exactly looked like those playoff teams from last year, but for different reasons. The Rams seem to be suffering from something of a Super Bowl hangover: Matthew Stafford has thrown four touchdowns to a gaudy five interceptions through just three games, but the Rams have put their Week 1 shellacking at the hands of the Bills behind them to win two straight games. The 49ers will have to continue to navigate their 2022 season without their starting quarterback Trey Lance, but the alternative is just fine in Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo, who was the subject of trade rumors all throughout the offseason, is again the starter for the 49ers. India Enters Metaverse Fashion World For The First Time! – Analytics Insight https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/india-enters-metaverse-fashion-world-for-the-first-time-analytics-insight/ India Enters Metaverse Fashion World for The First Time! India enters the metaverse fashion with designer Shubhika Sharma being the pioneer India enters metaverse fashion! The idea behind digital fashion seems quite strange to many of us, but this growing phenomenon has now become a niche market that has gained much traction. Experts believe that this new metaverse concept is redefining the basic idea behind fashion and shopping! Recent reports say, clothing basically exists in the virtual world to make the fashion domain far more sustainable than what it is today. There is also data that claims that replacing physical clothing with digital ones will enhance the company’s design and development cycles, along with reducing the brand’s carbon footprint by over 40%. Due to several of these reasons, designers from all over the world have been entering the metaverse, showcasing their designs and introducing us to what fashion can actually look like in the emerging virtual world. Recently, Indian fashion designer Shubhika Sharma, from Papa Don’t Preach becomes the first label in the country to display fashion creations in the metaverse with the help of garments and accessories. This futuristic move by the brand is basically a footprint in Indian fashion history to become the first brands to enter the metaverse domain. Besides Shubhika, other Indian fashion giants like Manish Malhotra, Anamika Khanna, and Raghavendra Rathore have dropped their own NFT tokens, digital items in the form of an image, video, or in-game solution that can be traded or turned into a virtual outfit. They claim NFTs have become a major part of our virtual experience developing and integrating this evolving domain into the luxurious industry of fashion might be just the right step. However, the fashion industry is still quite reluctant to let go of the traditional norms of fashion. Some believe creativity can mostly be obtained through humans and a machine-generated model can never be considered an art. To advance into this domain, a strategy must include different ways to engage with the younger and emerging nature of clients. Forget ‘Uptober,’ Crypto Market Remains At Risk Of Further Losses – BeInCrypto https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/forget-uptober-crypto-market-remains-at-risk-of-further-losses-beincrypto/ Despite the anticipation of a crypto market ‘Uptober,’ Bitcoin was still stuck under the $20,000 level as social volumes continued to dwindle.  A new month is often accompanied by positive social sentiment and fresh gains for assets. For Bitcoin and the larger cryptocurrency market, bearish blues are still playing despite entering October.  Social data from Santiment showed a weighted BTC sentiment score of -1.185, while the social volume Twitter news metric fell back to its lowest levels since April 2022. Low social volumes and a drop in weighted sentiment highlighted that talk of BTC on social media has taken a hit, indicating that interest in the top cryptocurrency by market cap has waned. Source: Santiment Maximum pain for BTC HODLers? Bitcoin analyst Willy Woo pointed out that maximum pain levels had not yet been reached, which could mean BTC HODLers are yet to reach a bottom. Looking at the chart below showing BTC supply at a loss, it is evident that during past cycles the BTC price bottomed when around 60% of Bitcoins traded below their purchase price.  This time around, a similar situation has yet to be seen. According to supply in loss, the current BTC bottom could be reached around $10,000. However, since the ‘structure of this current market is very different,’ it’s tough to say whether $10,000 could really be the bottom. Crypto volumes holding up On the weekly chart Bitcoin’s price has been moving in a tight range between $23,700 and $18,800 since June 2022. The weekly RSI is showing no sign of a breakout, as sellers continue dominating buyers.  One positive sign is the constantly rising volumes since April, which suggests retail traders are still in the game even though OGs have remained neutral. Bitcoin recently saw the highest number of coins move off exchanges during this past quarter acting as a bullish signal. However, it hasn’t been enough to push the price above key resistance levels.  Data from Santiment showed that Bitcoin saw 34,723 BTC move off exchanges on Sept. 30, indicating what may be a hint of trader confidence heading into Q4. The last time this many BTC left exchanges was June 17, and prices jumped +22% over the month that followed.  While the high outflows could present some short-term bullishness, October likely won’t turn to ‘Uptober’ for crypto HODLers this time around. Notably, while October has been a bullish month during bull markets, in bear markets BTC has never performed well in October.  That said, the correlation between BTC and equity prices, especially tech stocks, has noted steady growth. Macroeconomic concerns around inflation, geopolitical climate, and monetary policies have left BTC prices down thus affecting the broader market as well.  Disclaimer All the information contained on our website is published in good faith and for general information purposes only. Applying For A US Tourist Visa Is Expensive discouraging Visitors USA TODAY
Applying For A US Tourist Visa Is Expensive discouraging Visitors USA TODAY
Applying For A US Tourist Visa Is Expensive, ‘discouraging Visitors’ – USA TODAY https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/applying-for-a-us-tourist-visa-is-expensive-discouraging-visitors-usa-today/ Tourist visas can be expensive and confusing to apply for. The process may discourage some travelers from visiting the U.S. Visa policies try to balance economic and national security priorities. It can be hard for international visitors to get permission to come to the U.S.  Onyi Apakama knows this firsthand. She’s a first-generation American born to two Nigerian immigrants, and much of her family is still living overseas. A convoluted and expensive tourist visa application process means her relatives have missed major milestones with family here in the U.S.  “It was definitely a sad thing because it was (my cousin’s) younger sister,” Apakama said. “She wasn’t able to attend her sister’s wedding.” For Americans, it can be easy to forget how complicated international travel can be depending on your passport. U.S. passport holders can access 186 international destinations without applying for visas in advance according to the Henley Passport Index, meaning we almost never need to go through the hassle and expense of filling out extra paperwork or turning up at a country’s embassy to prove ourselves before a trip. But many visitors coming to the U.S. face a process that’s much more arduous.  Forget the post office: You may be able to renew your passport online Summer airport meltdowns?: Things in Amsterdam are chilling out According to Esra Calvert, around 40% of international visitors to the U.S. need to apply for a visa to enter. Calvert is the principal at Esra Calvert Consulting, which focuses on data in the tourism industry. “There is paperwork you have to do online, and you wait for your appointment time,” she told USA TODAY. “When your appointment time comes, you go to the embassy for an interview. You have to show proof of finances, what your plans are, very basic pieces of information just for proof that you’re going on vacation or a business meeting.” In Nigeria, Apakama said, it can also be harder to get a visa appointment if your family isn’t politically well-connected.  Those extra barriers sometimes discourage people from applying for visas at all – to say nothing of those whose applications are rejected. That means the U.S. is potentially missing out on a lot of tourist dollars that would otherwise be generated every year. According to the Department of Commerce, tourism accounted for $1.9 trillion in economic output in 2019.  “There’s so many choices for travelers,” Calvert said. “If a traveler has to wait for a year,” just to get their visa interview, they’re going to go somewhere else for vacation. Raoul Bianchi, a reader in political economy at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Department of Economics Policy and International Business said that tourist visa applications disproportionately make it harder for people to travel from the developing world. ‘They should’ve helped me’: Booking through platforms like Expedia leaves some travelers stranded Looser COVID guidelines: What the CDC’s latest policy means for travel “The global north/global south division is very stark,” he said in an interview. “There is an enormous disparity between wealthy westernized countries and sub-Saharan Africa, South and Central America and South Asia.” The process can be so opaque that experts suggest many visa applicants fear that talking about their experiences to the press could hinder their ability to get approved. What does a tourist visa cost to visit the US? According to the State Department, it costs $160 per person to apply for a tourist visa. They can be valid for up to 10 years, depending on the applicant’s nationality. The fees are becoming more prohibitive for some travelers as inflation rises.  “The cost has gone up. And right now with inflation (and) the exchange rate, the Nigerian naira has gotten a lot weaker in the last year or six months,” Apakama said. When she visited Nigeria in 2019 or 2020, it was around 350 naira to the dollar. Now it’s closer to 430 naira to the dollar, meaning her relatives could wind up paying tens of thousands of naira just in visa fees for a whole family unit to visit. In a statement, the State Department said those fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable, even if the application is rejected.  “The department’s consular operations are largely funded by fees for services. Visa fees charged are generally based on the cost to the department of providing visa services, and are determined through periodic studies of the cost of consular services, including visa services,” a spokesperson said. “This means that there is no profit to the U.S. government from the collection of fees. Rather the fee is in place to recover the cost to the U.S. government of providing the service.” Is there a doctor onboard?: In-flight medical kits may not have everything a passenger could need in an emergency Who is required to get a tourist visa to come to the US? Visa requirements can change over time, and especially for visitors to the U.S., have gotten more stringent in recent decades. “An average of two-thirds of the people around the world have to obtain a visa prior to departure. The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and more recent terrorist attacks worldwide, have changed the discourse of immigration and international tourism within Europe and North America,”  Pooneh Torabian, a lecturer in the Department of Tourism at the University of Otago’s business school said in a statement. “Since Sept. 11, international travel has become more regulated in the name of safety and security, and international movement for ethnic minority citizens, specifically Arab and Muslim travelers, has been hindered.” ‘The space was not built for me’: Plus-size flyers say airlines have room to improve Bianchi agreed, and pointed out that visa policies often reflect a country’s broader geopolitical stances. For example, soon after President Donald Trump took office, his administration enacted a ban on visitors from many Muslim-majority countries, a reflection of the president’s immigration priorities. Even since President Biden reversed that policy, however, advocates say little has changed in practical terms.  “Quite often visa policies can be a reflection of bilateral diplomatic relations or a proxy for something else that’s going on,” Bianchi said. Story continues below. For visa applicants, Apakama said, the restrictions can feel like discrimination at a high level. “Who are the folks that we as a country believe are going to contribute to the society and those who are not,” she said. Many applicants feel there’s a human arbitrariness to the process, too. “My family members believe it’s whoever’s interviewing you that day and it’s just their mood,” Apakama said. When the visa interviewer seemed grumpy, her family felt their applications faced more scrutiny and were more likely to be denied. The U.S. has visa waiver agreements with 40 countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and many European nations. Canadian citizens also usually do not need to apply for tourist visas to visit the U.S. Travelers using passports from countries not on the waiver list generally do need to apply for tourist visas before coming here.  Even when a visitor has a visa, border guards have the discretion to turn them away at passport control. Apakama said she’s had relatives who were denied entry after landing in the U.S. and put on flights back to Nigeria. How long does it take to get a tourist visa for the US? Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, U.S. embassies and consulates have been struggling to keep up with visa applications, and in some places the wait time for an appointment is now longer than a year. “It’s discouraging visitors,” Calvert said “All the hassle that travelers have to go through with the visa application process in this day and age, there could be some opportunities to bring the visa backlog numbers down.” The State Department’s wait time calculator estimates that the consulate in Mumbai is now scheduling tourist visa appointments 848 days out, though the department says that extreme wait is an outlier.  First look: American Airlines reveals new business class and premium economy seats Welcome aboard: An early tour of KLM airlines’ new Premium Comfort cabin “We are reducing appointment wait times in all visa classes as quickly as possible, worldwide. In fact, visa processing is rebounding faster than projected, after a near-complete shutdown and freezing of resources during the pandemic,” a spokesperson said. “The wait time for a routine visa appointment at half of our overseas posts is less than four months, and at some posts is far shorter than that. Applicants who have urgent travel needs and can apply away from their own home country should seek to do so.” Will US visas ever be easier to get? Bianchi, from Manchester Metropolitan University, said visa policies are constantly in flux. “There are tensions and conflicts within governments. They don’t work as a monolith,” he said. “You’ll get the tourism industry in alliance with the tourism ministries, but the ministries of the interior, or in your case the Department of Homeland Security, will be very much in favor of tightening visas because their concern is security.” Are airplane seats too small?: FAA soliciting public comments on minimum dimensions That push and pull means making visas more accessible is usually a slow and contested process. In the meantime Calvert said, the U.S. will keep missing out on potential tourist dollars. “I’m concerned about price as a barrier and these visa regulations,” she said. “Travel shouldn’t be that difficult. How do we keep the world open?” If you’d like to share your story of applying for a visa, please use this form.

Gaming Club Has An Influx Of Members – Six Mile Post – Six Mile Post https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/gaming-club-has-an-influx-of-members-six-mile-post-six-mile-post/ Ashley Hall Members of the Gaming Club, including President Tristen Tolbert and Co-Advisor Victoria Banks, gathered in the Paulding campus Learning Commons to play board games and partake in pizza at a for a club event called Game Lounge. Members are taking their turns in “Betrayal at House on the Hill.” Caleb Blaylock Ashley Hall, Managing Editor October 3, 2022 Club activities have been scarce or suspended altogether since the height of COVID, but now, GHC clubs are regaining their footing. The Gaming Club has risen from a seemingly capped number of 30 members to 141 as of publication. “We have definitely broken the stagnation,” Gaming Club President, Tristen Tolbert, said. “We are still growing.” Multiple factors have led to the growth of the club, the main ingredient being determination. “Ever since I became president, my No. 1 goal was to reach other campuses,” Tolbert said. “Over the summer… we were planning to really come back this semester and just have it be our best semester yet.” The Gaming Club also has a new co-advisor, English Professor Victoria Banks. She has a background in game writing, interactive narrative design, ludology and even worked as a gaming journalist for some time. She works with IT Helpdesk Support Lilly Hayes to co-advise the club. “I was definitely interested. I thought I could help students who also have this as a hobby or are interested in it as a career path,” Banks said. “I’m very new and still learning, but I’m excited for helping the Gaming Club students and offering what knowledge I can.” Tolbert had the idea to expand the number of officers the Gaming Club has to properly accommodate the number of members. There are four vice presidents, one president and two co-advisors. “Having more vice presidents and having people that are also equally passionate come together and put in the help… was a really big part of it,” Tolbert said. He added that the Gaming Club Discord server has also “helped us hit that, like, hidden market of online students.” Monica Phillips, a GHC computer science major, is a fully online Gaming Club vice president that mostly interacts through the Discord server and Zoom meetings. “I think Discord channels also are really inviting for students to kind of start, especially if they’re nervous about meeting new people…” Banks said, “but it’s an easy way to become connected with each other, especially even if across campuses.” “The main reason I joined the Gaming Club is because I got an email about it…” Phillips said. She added that the club has a bigger presence on the Rome and Cartersville campuses where students linger after classes and congregate near the cafeterias and in the recreational rooms. “No matter what you do on campus, you’re not going to reach those full-online students,” Tolbert said, “but now that we have this online aspect of the club, we can reach anybody.” One other aspect that is helping the growth of the Gaming Club is that word is getting out that it is inclusive of all games, not just video games. “There’s a common misconception, that I think we’re finally starting to break, that we are a video game club. We’re not. We’re a gaming club,” Tolbert said. The club encourages members to participate in and provide all kinds of games, such as video games, tabletop games, board games and card games. A few examples of the games the club members play are “Super Smash Bros.,” “Dungeons & Dragons,” “Risk” and “Splatoon.” The club also holds full-online tabletop campaigns so online students have the chance to participate. The Gaming Club holds many on-campus events for members, as well as other students and staff, to join. It holds tournaments for “Super Smash Bros.” and “Magic: The Gathering,” and has anime nights and gatherings that have been dubbed Cheese Boards. “We get a bunch of pizza, we get a bunch of board games, video games, card games, tabletop sometimes… invite everybody we know…” Tolbert said. “We say it’s open to the campus; anybody can come. I don’t care if a bunch of professors rock up, cool. I know they know how to play ‘Uno.’” The Gaming Club officers have plans for the future of the club and what it can provide. Banks wants to use her expertise in the gaming industry to guide students to get professionally involved in the gaming industry. “I’m hoping I can help students collaborate, network, enter competitions and develop their experience within game design so that they can be set up to succeed upon graduating and apply for internships and gaining those connections,” Banks said. She recommends that students interact with game developers and writers at conventions and build an online portfolio of any gaming-related work they have done. The Gaming Club has many more things to offer to any interested students. “It’s more than just playing games and having other people to play games [with],” Tolbert said, “we’re really just trying to build a community at the college where people can come and really just enjoy being here.” “It is welcoming to a wide range of people with interest in gaming, whether that’s as a hobbyist, or as competitive, or in an industry,” Banks said. Tolbert said that he would like to see the Gaming Club grow to 200 members by Christmas. Anyone interested in joining can join the Discord server by scanning a QR code found on campus bulletin boards, or by contacting Lilly Hayes or Victoria Banks.

Classic ’89 370LE Airstream Motorhome Is Now A Rolling Private Cinema That Sleeps 7 – Autoevolution https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/classic-89-370le-airstream-motorhome-is-now-a-rolling-private-cinema-that-sleeps-7-autoevolution/ Loretta is also a good example of upcycling for an extended shelf-life. It started out as a 1989 370LE Airstream Motorhome but is now the perfect family vacation home that can sleep up to seven people: the six members of the family and one guest. It also provides basic creature comforts and, to boot, it doubles as a private cinema. A home on wheels and a rolling movie theater, all wrapped up in a beautiful, shiny package, what more could you want? Loretta is a project by Colorado-based Timeless Travel Trailers, which boasts of being the “largest and most experienced custom builder in North America,” with an impressive portfolio of private and corporate customers. Done on commission for a family of six from New York City seeking “a getaway that still resembles their home in the city,” Loretta has a “modern and minimal aesthetic, [while] the interior is simple and fresh.” Words can only do this much in terms of conveying the message, so the photos in the gallery will offer whatever proof is still needed that this is a beautiful project in every way. The interior is clean and functional, modular yet still very elegant and inviting. The exterior is top-notch, with the shiny aluminum skin extending within the walls, which forms a beautiful contrast with the natural wood-engineered white oak flooring. The company behind the conversion says that they removed all the original aluminum skins and added the new type of skin that Airstream uses in its current models. Inside, there’s a lounge that doubles as a dining area and sleeping area, depending on the time of day. Couches offer comfortable seating during mealtimes, convert into beds, or into lounges when the projector screen comes down for movie nights. There’s a double couch that becomes a king-size bed and another couch reserved for sleeping one guest. At the rear, in a separate room, Loretta has two more couches that join to become a bed and two elevated bunks for kids. In total, there’s sleeping for seven people, and the size of the motorhome allows for some sense of privacy despite the high number of people inside. Speaking of which, Loretta is 37 feet long (11.2 meters). The three-axle motorhome also has space for a kitchenette, which comes with a sink, pantry, storage, microwave, induction cooktop, and a fridge with a freezer compartment. The entire family can sit down for dinner at the fold-down tables, and there’s a certain sense of refinement to the space thanks to the marble-like waterfall countertops. Since Loretta was designed to travel, no real marble was used, as it would have added too much weight; a real marble stone veneer on a plywood substrate was used instead. One of the counters integrates a bar with a wine chiller and a secret liquor compartment that comes up from the countertop. Fancy – and most welcome after a long work week. The bathroom is small but practical, with a toilet, a shower with a stainless steel pan, and a duckboard. The lounge area can become a private cinema thanks to an ultra-short-throw LG projector and projector screen, coupled with a Sonos stereo system with a hidden soundbar. A 32-inch television is also available in the kitchen, on a swivel arm for more convenience. Further upgrades include new wiring and plumbing, a new generator, water heater and pump, furnace, AC and two fans, new fresh, gray, and black water tanks, and a security system with surveillance cameras for peace of mind when the family leaves this beauty unattended. According to Timeless Travel Trailers, Loretta remains one of their most popular projects. Completed and delivered to the owners in 2018, it’s been on several cross-country trips since and is holding up remarkably well.
