MARQUETTE — Longyear has announced plans for Forestville, a residential community that it said will bring higher-quality new homes to outdoor-active people that access Marquette, and Michigan’s largest all-season trail network.
The neighborhood, the company said in a news release, will feature “thoughtfully built homes” using regional forest products crafted into modern U.P. lifestyle floor plans. Forestville will unveil housing designs and neighborhood plans late this year, and begin taking reservations in spring 2023 for move-in in 2024.
Longyear said Forestville offers features that are distinct from other Midwest housing developments:
≤ immediate access to the adjacent trail networks and waterways;
≤environment-friendly construction featuring locally sourced materials from regional forests;
≤ a variety of housing options for active young professionals, families, retirees and others ranging from townhomes to single-family homes;
≤ an active neighborhood concept that inspires healthy living, comfort and environmental stewardship; and
≤ hundreds of construction jobs throughout the project’s lifespan.
“Forestville has been inspired by the active people of the U.P. who love spending time outdoors in our beautiful natural surroundings,” Longyear CEO Steve Hicks said in a news release. “Our community will offer high quality, thoughtfully designed homes in a neighborhood that gives people the escape they deserve.”
In development since 2021, Longyear said Forestville is driven by the substantial demand for housing in the region, combined with the significant increase in active, outdoor-minded consumers. The project was undertaken as a way to address a growing U.P. trend — housing shortages.
Two independent studies by InvestUP and Michigan Technological University found that the lack of available housing is both a significant challenge and the region’s greatest opportunity to retain and attract professionals and retirees to the area, according to Longyear.
Hicks noted that green space and a low environmental impact have been, and remain, important considerations in Longyear’s approach to designing the project for future customers.
“Longyear’s plan is to preserve 50 percent — a substantial portion of the property — as non-developable green space,” Hicks said. “We’re collaborating with our professional team and some key stakeholders to design our community to have the least possible amount of environmental impact.”
Forestville will be located initially on roughly 160 acres of Longyear-owned property in Marquette Township. Longyear has owned property in the Forestville area for more than 125 years, and has provided the community with free recreational access to the land for decades.
“The trails are a treasured asset for our whole community,” Hicks said. “We’re pleased that so many people have enjoyed the trails on Longyear land over the years. Forestville gives us an opportunity to work with the trail networks to strategically plan more recreation opportunities for future generations to enjoy.”
During the estimated five years it will take to complete the Forestville project, Longyear will create more than 100 additional family sustaining jobs and provide a new substantial tax base within Marquette Township.

Longyear indicated that the Forestville neighborhood will embrace the surrounding Noquemanon Trail Network and provide outdoor-active residents with immediate access to adjacent public trails and waterways.
The property is located mostly between Forestville Road and the Dead River Basin.

UAE’s Latest Bet On Tech: A Ministry In The Metaverse – Barron’s https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/uaes-latest-bet-on-tech-a-ministry-in-the-metaverse-barrons/

The United Arab Emirates, which already boasts the world’s tallest skyscraper and has launched a bold Mars mission, now hopes to become a pioneer in the depths of the metaverse.
In a project launched at Dubai’s gleaming Museum of the Future, it announced that the UAE’s economy ministry was setting up shop inside the immersive virtual world that is now taking shape.
Those who don their virtual reality goggles or use other means to venture within will find a ministry open for business with companies and even ready to sign bilateral agreements with foreign governments, officials said.
The metaverse is an online world where users will eventually be able to game, work and study, its proponents say — although it is still in a “test” phase, the UAE’s economy minister conceded.
Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri was speaking at the inaugural Dubai Metaverse Assembly, held at the museum whose innovative ring shape decorated with Arabic calligraphy flanks the city’s main thoroughfare.
Representatives of tech giants mingled with entrepreneurs and developers exploring the potential of the metaverse, a network of digital spaces intended as an extension of the physical world.
“In the last couple of years we’ve seen investments, we’ve seen companies move in, and with the changes of the (visa) regime… we see talent coming in,” Al Marri told AFP in an interview.
“We trained our employees to really immerse themselves in the metaverse, use the metaverse and engage with the Generation Z that is going to come,” he added.

The UAE, which has a history of bold projects including the 830-metre (2,723-foot) Burj Khalifa, hopes the metaverse can add $4 billion to annual GDP and 40,000 jobs to its workforce by 2030.
In its bid to become one of the world’s top-10 metaverse economies, Dubai wants to attract 1,000 companies specialising in blockchain and related technologies, helped by eased visa rules for freelancers, entrepreneurs and creatives.
As the coronavirus pandemic pushed more people into the online world, “Covid really accelerated” the trend, Al Marri added.
“We thought the metaverse is a phase technology” that might take 10 to 20 years to emerge,” he said. “Covid-19 really immersed us so fast and expedited the use of the metaverse.”
Unlike the UAE’s oil-rich capital, Abu Dhabi, crude represents just five percent of Dubai’s economy which has pivoted towards business, tourism, real estate and new technologies.
The UAE has already introduced a law governing virtual assets and a regulatory body for cryptocurrencies, while welcoming major crypto exchange platforms.

Yuichi YAMAZAKI
One of the UAE’s early private-sector metaverse projects is called 2117, named after the dream of Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid to colonise Mars a century from now.
Metaverse users can now buy tickets to join a virtual shuttle carrying settlers to the red planet.
“A lot of us won’t live long enough to see this mission with our own eyes,” said Amin Al Zarouni, founder of the Bedu start-up behind the virtual Mars trip.
“We’ll try to replicate this experience in the metaverse.”
Until now, use of the metaverse is niche and even its architects say widespread adoption is years away. How it will develop is unknown.

According to Meta, which owns Facebook and other social media titans, Analysis Group research has shown that the metaverse could add $360 billion to GDP in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey in 10 years, if it follows the growth pattern of mobile technology.
“We also know that when policy supports innovation, it accelerates the adoption of new technologies,” the company said, when asked about Dubai’s prospects of becoming a metaverse hub.
“If we look at the context of Dubai, there’s already a clear strategy and goals to accelerate metaverse adoption and investments in the building blocks of the metaverse.”

Promising review: “I use a loofah everyday, so I just bought this to use once a week, not thinking it would do much if anything. Man, was I wrong!!! I read reviews, viewed pictures, and watched the videos. I assumed they all used tanning products or spray tans, because the skin in the tub was brown/black. OMG, mine was too!!! I haven’t tanned in 15 or so years. It was gross. On the bright side, my skin really does feel great. Just get it, seriously…” —Kim McMahon
Get them from Amazon for $9.99 (also available individually).
11. A Sunday Riley face sunscreen with SPF 30 because I bet your current sunscreen doesn’t protect against blue light. Well, this guy does! And it dries without leaving a white cast or feeling heavy on the skin.
Sephora
I’d written off all Western sunscreens as absolute TRASH in favor of Asian sunscreens, but this sunscreen really surprised me. What impressed me the most and what is probably my favorite thing about this product (apart from the sun protection) is that there was absolutely no white cast. It does take a little bit for it to fully soak into the skin, but I actually enjoyed the dewy glow it gave my skin because I don’t usually wear makeup/foundation. The only fault I can find is that the sunscreen is quite runny, so I have to make sure to hold the container upside down when I open it so the sunscreen doesn’t drip everywhere.
Promising review: “The best sunscreen for melanated people. For those saying it leaves a blue cast, the key is rub the sunscreen in your hands and create heat versus simply applying straight to your face. So many benefits in one sunscreen, why wouldn’t you buy it??” —thee1bbn
Get it from Amazon and Sephora for $35.
12. The Clean Ball, a genius German invention so you can get rid of purse sand — y’know, the fine layer of dirt, dust, crumbs, grit, and who knows what else that you scrape your hand against whenever you’re rooting around your bag and you brush the bottom of your tote. Inside the honeycomb pink ball is a smaller sticky ball that picks up debris and washes clean so you can reuse it.
Amazon
Promising review: “This little ball is genius! It rolls around in my purse, which I live out of. It picks up a lot lint, debris, or even crumbs. It’s easy to find with the bright pink. Just remove and wash and it’s ready to go again. The price was great and something I can use for years. If you live out of your purse this a must have!!” —dj3biggs

Crypto Investors Hunker Down For storms Ahead TechCentral
Crypto Investors Hunker Down For ‘storms Ahead’ – TechCentral https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/crypto-investors-hunker-down-for-storms-ahead-techcentral/
Crypto investors found something to cheer about amid the recent downturn in digital tokens: the asset class held up better than just about everything else in the third quarter. Yet the hunt for a bottom continues as long-term holders cling on with expectations that there’s more pain to come — and retail investors stay on the sidelines.
Even with the narrative going around that crypto hung tough in the July to September stretch, the mood has remained sour. While around 83 500 new digital wallets are coming online daily, that’s a low for the 2020-2022 cycle, according to data compiled by strategists at Glassnode.
Meanwhile, wealth held by “mature coins” is at an all-time high, the researcher said, as long-time investors have refused to spend them amid the market turmoil. The group of investors who “hodl” through thick and thin — meaning those who remain loyal even during tough times — has remained “steadfast”, according to Glassnode, which said that they might be hunkering down “for the storms ahead”.
Such is the problem for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies now — the cohort of retail-type investors who had fuelled much of last year’s huge surge in prices have been missing in action. Some market watchers say that with hodl-investors waiting things out, the overhanging question remains whether — or when — individual investors will make a return.
“The overall price has got to do better, and once it does the retail investor will become excited again. We definitely don’t have that right now because we’re just stuck in a range,” said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak & Co. “There’s nothing that turns off an individual investor more than something getting stuck in a sideways range.”
At issue is bitcoin needing to find a bottom amid a selloff that’s brought it down 60% this year. Many analysts say that should US stocks form a floor, then the digital token could too, though there’s little consensus on when that might happen. Others argue that once the dollar starts to weaken, then bitcoin might be able to break upwards also.
Waned
Whatever the case, interest in crypto has waned in recent months. Google trends show the general populace has been much less interested in the tokens. And bitcoin’s on-chain activity has been depressed the whole year, according to a note by Jaran Mellerud at researcher Arcane.
“If it is a risk asset, as many including myself have suggested, picking a bottom in BTC is tantamount to picking a bottom in stocks,” Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex, said, adding that “the crash has tempered the enthusiasm among” people he speaks to.
With investors sitting things out until bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can start to rebound, ETF flows have remained muted, too. The money flowing out of crypto-related funds in the third quarter has slowed and some analysts argue the bulk of investors fleeing happened in the second quarter. Now they’re just waiting things out.
TC|Daily | ‘The biggest event ever in crypto’: Revix CEO on the ‘Merge’
There are plenty who say that price recoveries could still be a ways off. That’s the view of Ashley Oerth, senior investment strategy analyst at Invesco, who says that cryptocurrencies tend to be valued not by their own characteristics but by the prevailing macro environment.
TC|Daily | Simon Dingle on the ZARP rand stablecoin, the Merge and more
“‘Next summer’ (northern hemisphere) for crypto is probably when we see peak hawkishness from central banks and a start to easing policy,” Oerth said. “To the extent that you’re a believer in crypto’s long-term potential, now may be a buying opportunity — if you can stomach the volatility.” — Vildana Hajric, (c) 2022 Bloomberg LP

US Senate Candidate Blake Masters Calls For Biden Impeachment At GOP Gathering In Arizona The Epoch Times
US Senate Candidate Blake Masters Calls For Biden Impeachment At GOP Gathering In Arizona – The Epoch Times https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/us-senate-candidate-blake-masters-calls-for-biden-impeachment-at-gop-gathering-in-arizona-the-epoch-times/
SUN CITY, Ariz.—U.S. Senate candidate Blake Masters said Congress should impeach President Joe Biden for his role in the illegal migrant crisis resulting in a flood of fentanyl across the southern border into the United States.
At the same time, Trump-endorsed Masters, a Republican, said his incumbent opponent, Democrat Mark Kelly, has done little to stem the national security crisis since he took office and should be held accountable.
“Where’s Mark Kelly on this? I think Mark Kelly should have to attend some of the funerals of the [fentanyl victims] on this,” said Masters during a Republican gathering in Sun City, Arizona, on Oct. 1.
“Do you ever get the feeling they’re doing this on purpose?” Masters said.
U.S. Senate candidate Blake Masters (R-Ariz) addresses a large Republican gathering in Sun City, Ariz., on Oct. 1, 2022. (Allan Stein/The Epoch Times)
A crowd of over 400 people attended the event sponsored by the Sun City West Republican Club, during which former Arizona U.S. Senate 2022 primary candidate Jim Lamon voiced support for Masters’ run for Congress.
“This is a huge election for this country,” Lamon said. “We all have to stand united—just like the Marxists, right? They all stand united.”
“One thing I bet we agree on, our country needs us.”
Masters began by asking the cheering crowd, “Who’s waiting for a red wave in a couple of weeks?”
“We have to stay in the fight. We have to act as if our country depends on it.”
Swing State
Masters said Arizona remains pivotal in the election, after having to bear the “brunt” of the illegal immigration and fentanyl crises. He blamed the Democrats’ failed policies in handling the emergencies.
“They have failed in so many respects. Many people talk about the border crisis as some abstraction, as if it’s some act of God. Biden caused it. His policies, right? Thanks to President Trump, we had operational control over our border,” Masters said.
“I knew it was going to be bad, you knew it was going to be bad but, man, I didn’t know it would be this bad … Democrats have exceeded our expectations.”
On Sept. 19, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said the number of illegal alien encounters nationwide in August was 157,921—a 2.2 percent increase from July.
The total number of illegal alien encounters during the past fiscal year ending in September was nearly $2.5 million.
Masters said Biden’s executive order ending border wall construction in 2021 not only “incentivized” illegal immigration but also continued the immigration policy of former President Barack Obama.
The only sanctuary community where illegals are not welcome is Martha’s Vineyard, Masters said to laughter.
In September, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis gained national attention when he sent two planes carrying illegal aliens and potential asylum seekers from Venezuela to affluent liberal Martha’s Vineyard, to the dismay of locals. The illegals were taken away voluntarily to a military base to receive food and shelter.
Good Policy, Bad Policy
Since Biden became president, Masters said the U.S. Department of Justice, Internal Revenue Service, and FBI have become weapons of the Democratic Party.
“Why does every federal agency need a mini-military police force? It’s really dangerous,” he said.
Inflation is rampant with the economy in tatters, and thousands of people die yearly from fentanyl overdoses, he said.
Masters said the Biden administration is pushing for federalized elections to remove state control. He described his U.S. Senate race as a “propaganda war” waged by Democrats, costing his campaign $400,000 weekly in advertising in Maricopa County, Arizona’s most populous.
“In a weird way, Mark Kelly’s [negative] ads are helping me. They are what they call us. It’s projection,” Masters said.
Saying Kelly “votes more in lock-step with Biden, “now we can see the whites of their eyes,” with the Nov. 8 election now 37 days away, he said.
“Mark knows he’s vulnerable,” Masters said. “Look at everything that’s crumbling around you because of Democrat policies. Why believe Democrat attack ads?”
Masters said Democrats fear an America First platform, having “put America last” themselves.
Attorney General Race
Saturday’s gathering also featured Abe Hamadeh, Republican candidate for Arizona Attorney General in the general election. His Democratic opponent is Kristin Mayes.
“My opponent wants to fight the weather; I want to fight criminals,” Hamadeh said, lampooning Mayes’ stance on climate change. “My opponent wants to hunt down businesses.”
Hamadeh called on a united Republican front in a critical election, perhaps the most important in recent history.
“We all understand that we can’t do this alone,” he told supporters.
Of this aggressive border control policy, Hamadeh said on “day one,” he would declare Mexican drug cartels “terrorist organizations.”
Both candidates said they view the 2022 election as a struggle for national survival.
“We have to win. The stakes are too high. If not, [America] is gone—it is gone,” Masters said.

These 2 ASX Tech Stocks Are Taking A Hit Ahead Of RBA’s Rate Meeting – TipRanks https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/these-2-asx-tech-stocks-are-taking-a-hit-ahead-of-rbas-rate-meeting-tipranks/
ASX tech stocks have been taking a hit ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) meeting tomorrow, where it’s set to raise its benchmark interest rate for a sixth consecutive time.
The technology sector is among those that tend to be sensitive to interest rate changes. The S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology (XIJ) index fell more than 1.30% today, extending its year-to-date losses to over 36%. The notable decliners in the index were Xero Limited (ASX:XRO) and Nextdc Limited (ASX:NXT).
Why are RBA rate hikes adverse to technology companies?
The RBA is predicted to raise its interest rate by as much as 0.50% as it attempts to tame inflation that has hit record levels. Rising rates mean more expensive loans for borrowers. When borrowing becomes more expensive, technology companies can face difficulties when trying to raise additional capital, which is needed to meet growth expectations.
Moreover, more expensive loans can diminish sales for technology companies if their customers cannot access the funding they require for IT projects. Aside from worries about increasing rates making borrowing more expensive, recession concerns have also caused some investors to sour on tech stocks.
Xero shares sink but analysts keep faith in the stock
Xero provides online solutions to small businesses. Its shares fell as much as 4% today to hit a new 52-week low of AU$70.71. They settled at AU$71.60, down 2.6% for the day. The decline extended the stock’s year-to-date losses to over 50%. According to TipRanks’ analyst rating consensus, Xero stock is a Strong Buy. The average Xero share price target of AU$100.55 implies over 40% upside potential.
TipRanks insights further show that financial blogger opinions are 80% Bullish on Xero stock, compared to a sector average of 64%.
Nextdc shares plunge but analysts remain strongly bullish on the stock
Nextdc develops and operates data centres. Its share dropped as much as 3% today, hitting a new 52-week low of AU$8.57. The stock settled at AU$8.65, down 1.7% for the day. Nextdc shares have declined more than 30% since the beginning of 2022. According to TipRanks’ analyst rating consensus, Nextdc stock is a Strong Buy. The average Nextdc share price forecast of AU$12.79 implies about 48% upside potential.
TipRanks insights also show that financial blogger opinions are 92% Bullish on Nextdc stock, compared to a sector average of 65%.
Concluding remarks
While rising interest rates and recession concerns have kept many investors on edge, those investing for the longer term may choose to look past these headwinds. The impacts of rate hikes and even recessions often smooth out over long term investment strategies.

Broncos’ offense hurt by awful 3rd quarter in loss to Vegas
LAS VEGAS (AP) Russell Wilson had his most productive day with the Broncos, but it wasn’t enough to overcome numerous mistakes and an awful third quarter by Denver’s offense in a 32-23 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. … I thought we did some really great things in the first half, we really executed well and made some big plays,” said Wilson, who completed 17 of 25 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns. The Broncos’ totals for that quarter: 11 offensive plays for 7 yards over three possessions, all of which ended in punts.

For every homeless person in San Francisco who becomes housed with the help of government, four more people become homeless, according to a new report. This Sisyphean track record offers important lessons for other cities. Unfortunately, measures on the city’s November ballot ignore proven solutions and double down on misguided policies.
San Francisco’s first mistake is misdiagnosing the problem. The city’s political class thinks homelessness is primarily caused by insufficient housing. In truth, homelessness is more often caused by substance abuse and mental illness. That mistake has caused the city to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into “affordable” or “permanent” housing programs.
In 2016, city leaders created the San Francisco Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing (HSH). Since its inception, HSH has received $3.5 billion, while the number of people experiencing homelessness in the city annually has increased by 63 percent. About 50–60 percent of HSH’s funding in a typical year supports various permanent-housing programs.
Up to 20,000 people experience homelessness in San Francisco over the course of a year. San Francisco is the most expensive place on Earth to build, according to construction consultant Turner & Townsend. One “affordable” unit costs developers an average of $750,000 to build in the city. It’s cheaper to buy units, but not by much. For example, San Francisco recently bought two buildings for permanent supportive housing containing 252 units for $162.3 million, or $644,000 per unit.
Even if the city had $15 billion to build 20,000 units, it would not solve the problem, as the services draw new homeless people to the city: another 20,000 homeless people would emerge the next year, followed by 30,000 the next, and so on. The inflow of people experiencing homelessness greatly exceeds the number of people who become housed. The “Housing First” vision of giving every homeless person a permanent home is an expensive fool’s errand.
City officials helped to put two measures, D and E, on the November ballot, which proponents claim will increase the production of affordable housing by streamlining permitting when a project meets certain thresholds of affordability and tenant income (the measures differ on those thresholds). But to appease union overlords, both measures require builders to pay construction workers higher “prevailing [union] wages” on projects of 10 units or more, which could drive up total project costs by more than 35 percent. That won’t make housing more affordable.
San Francisco needs more housing, but giving HSH more money will not solve the homelessness problem; doing so would ignore the actual causes of homelessness. And in a desperate attempt to salvage a morsel of legitimacy for HSH, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors put Measure C on the ballot, asking voters to create a seven-member Homelessness Oversight Commission to oversee HSH, adding another layer of government bureaucracy.
San Francisco has compounded its homelessness problems by recklessly handing out cash assistance, effectively subsidizing self-destructive behaviors. After just one month of residency, people can receive benefits up to $869 a month for food and general assistance.
In a 2022 viral video, a self-described “old-school junkie” from Louisiana explains how “they pay you to be homeless here [in San Francisco]… it’s free money.” He uses assistance to pay for Netflix and Prime Video on his cell phone as he lives in a tent on a sidewalk and uses fentanyl. More housing development won’t solve this problem. People experiencing homelessness will continue to stream into the city, lured by permanent homes at taxpayer expense, generous cash benefits, and, perhaps most importantly, tolerance from political elites.
While San Francisco pursues its impossible dream of permanent housing for every homeless person, incentivizing more people to come to the city with cash assistance and the promise of housing, its political class tolerates neighborhood decay. Officials uncaringly sacrifice certain neighborhoods (but not Nancy Pelosi’s Pacific Heights) to the street problems accompanying homelessness. The epicenter of San Francisco’s homeless population is the Tenderloin, a nightmare of concentrated violence, theft, encampments, fires, drug dealing, drug use, and overdoses, which kill about two people a day in San Francisco. The Tenderloin, Mission District, South of Market, and other neighborhoods have become dangerous shelters of first resort, unsafe for housed and unhoused residents alike.
The root cause of this neighborhood decay is an unwillingness by government officials to enforce “the public purposes of public spaces” throughout the city. Parks, sidewalks, alleys, nature areas, and land along freeways and near transit systems have well-established public purposes that don’t include residential living. Since the city doesn’t preserve public spaces for their intended uses, unhoused people live in those areas, evading difficult choices such as receiving treatment, moving to designated safe sites, going to jail, or moving to another town.
Homelessness should never be a crime, but specific actions by an individual experiencing homelessness—or anyone else—should be crimes. That includes defecating in public, open drug use, littering, trespassing, assault, battery, and living on sidewalks and roadways. Residents of the Tenderloin—or any neighborhood—deserve a safe, clean community in which to raise their kids, where parks are used for recreation, not drug injection.
That leaves the question of where unhoused people should go. Housing First addresses the symptom of homelessness but leaves the root causes of homelessness—personal trauma, substance abuse, mental-health issues, disaffiliation—largely untreated, with deadly consequences.
From 2016 to 2021, 869 homeless people died in San Francisco, according to a 2022 study by medical researchers. The highest number of yearly deaths, 331, occurred during the peak of the Covid lockdowns, from March 2020 to March 2021, when people experiencing homelessness were shunted into their Housing First rooms. A full 82 percent of the 331 deaths were due to overdoses, the majority involving fentanyl, because underlying causes weren’t addressed. Without treatment, “Housing First” too often becomes ‘Death Second.’
In contrast, San Antonio, Texas, provides a proven compassionate model that focuses on the root causes of homelessness. Moreover, it can be scaled up relatively cheaply, compared to San Francisco’s approach.
Haven for Hope, which opened in 2010, is the vision of San Antonio business leader Bill Greehey, who raised $103 million to build the nonprofit facility. Most of the money came from private sources, and the City of San Antonio donated the land. Haven for Hope is an integrated “one stop” 22-acre campus for the safe housing and treatment of homeless people in Bexar County. It collaborates with 183 partners, 70 of which are on-site, and it provides transportation to off-site providers.
The 17-building complex offers a low-barrier emergency shelter called The Courtyard, where meals, showers, toilets, laundry, medical care, and case management services are provided. The complex also has a Transformational Campus of long-term housing with no time limit and individualized services for addiction recovery, mental-health care, life skills, and job training. The staff are well-trained, and around-the-clock security ensures the safety of the 1,700 residents and the surrounding neighborhoods. The operating budget for fiscal year 2021 was $24.7 million.
Since 2010, more than 40,000 people have been helped at Haven for Hope. Almost 6,000 people have found permanent housing through the transformational program, with 92 percent remaining stable and housed after one year. Judges in Bexar County offer many individuals facing criminal charges who have mental-health or substance-abuse problems a choice: jail or a recovery program at Haven for Hope. Results for individuals entering Haven for Hope through courts are reportedly as good as those for individuals entering without court intervention. The results are impressive.
In 2009, San Antonio and San Francisco had similar levels of homelessness, but during the decade that followed, the homeless population in San Antonio decreased 11 percent (including 77 percent fewer homeless downtown), while the homeless population in San Francisco surged nearly 80 percent. San Antonio is committed to getting people off the streets and into safe facilities dedicated to healing underlying traumas and tackling the true causes of homelessness through personalized treatment and job training. A similar commitment is needed in San Francisco.
For starters, the State of California should donate the underused 62-acre Cow Palace for a Haven for Hope-style campus for San Francisco. It should be staffed by trained professionals who collaborate with nonprofit service providers with proven track records of success. Business leaders should raise private funds to build the facility.

Nighttime Offers Profitable Opportunities_china.org.cn – China.org.cn https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/nighttime-offers-profitable-opportunities_china-org-cn-china-org-cn/
Be it watching the Peking Opera Farewell My Concubine at Dashila in the nation’s capital, having traditional Beijing snacks across the street, or camping on Shanghai’s bustling Nanjing Road, the nighttime economy is taking off in cities across the nation. The market scale is estimated to be over 40 trillion yuan ($5.7 trillion) this year.
As the COVID-19 resurgence is being contained in most Chinese cities, local governments are making the decision to promote business and consumption at night in a bid to capture opportunities at sundown.
The municipal government of Beijing decided to issue 100 million yuan worth of consumption coupons and designed up to 10 nighttime traveling routes to boost the capital’s nighttime economy, the Workers’ Daily reported. More than 20 key business areas and about 10,000 brands take part in various night activities extended through November, the report added.
In East China’s Shanghai, ten iconic scenic spots across the city are also embracing the nighttime economy. As a city built on fashion and innovation, Shanghai is ready to add more hustle and bustle to its evening entertainment repertoire.
In Chongqing, more than 200 featured activities online and offline were held so far this year, making it a sleepless city, the Economy &Nation Weekly under the Xinhua News Agency reported.
In Xi’an of Shaanxi province, consumption of culture and tourism at night is expected to create new growth opportunities, and the provincial capital has allocated several tourism and consumption areas for the nighttime economy including the Xi’an Grand Tang pedestrian street and the City Wall, Shaanxi Daily reported.
About 60 percent of consumption in China takes place at night, according to a report on urban residents’ spending habits by the Ministry of Commerce, said Shen Jiani, a senior researcher from the strategic research center of Trip.com, a tourism platform.
The overall business scale of the nation’s nighttime economy has been expanding rapidly since 2016, thanks to local government policy support, increased venues for consumption at night, as well as people’s rising appetite for spending in the evening, according to a research report from iiMedia Research.
“The Chinese nighttime economy surpassed 30 trillion yuan by the end of 2020, a growth of 5 percent year-on-year, and the figure is projected to exceed 40 trillion yuan in 2022,” the report said.
“Consumption holds great significance to China’s economy, so we can see governments of various levels launching all kinds of measures and businesses to shore up consumption,” said Zhang Yi, chief analyst with iiMedia Research.
“According to our research, most of the consumption activities are made by Chinese people during 6:00 pm to 2:00 am, both online and offline, showing the nighttime economy has great potential,” Zhang explained.
Contrary to the stereotyped impression that consumption at night is usually referring to food and snacks, the iiMedia Research survey shows it covers much wider activities like delivery services, online shopping, and many other cultural and entertainment activities.
“It is a blending of food, shopping, entertainment, tourism, exercise, exhibitions and shows, and the rapid development of digitalization has made consumption more convenient and easier,” Zhang added.
The Chinese New Year holiday this year, for example, showed people’s consumption at night totaled 379 billion yuan, up 27.06 percent year-on-year and accounted for 33.7 percent of all spending during the holiday, the iiMedia Research report on the nighttime economy showed.
In terms of business, dining and snacks accounted for 28.9 percent of the total spending in the evening, followed by shopping at 28.7 percent, entertainment at 19.9 percent and tourism at 15.8 percent, the report added.
Nighttime economy associated with cultural consumption, tourism and leisure activities has become a strategic part of the nation’s economy and social development, Zhao Yijing, head of nighttime tourism research at the China Tourism Academy was quoted as saying by Xinhua News Agency.
As an extension of daytime traveling, tourism in the evening is gradually taking shape over the past several years.
The nighttime traveling economy could be an effective solution for boosting consumption and activating the domestic economy, said Shen Jiani with Trip.com, adding that summer vacation is the annual peak for traveling in the evening.
Over the past five years, ticket booking volumes during summer vacations for touring scenic spots at night are usually 120 percent that of conventional evenings. Specifically, Trip.com found that tickets booked in July for evening travel swell 138 percent month-on-month, and saw a growth of 165 percent from the previous month in terms of passenger trips.
Discovering this trend, local governments have already tapped into this emerging market by laying out night touring development schemes. More than 200 cities have so far launched their own nighttime cultural and tourism revitalization plans including nighttime traveling routes, performances, arts and exhibitions among others, according to statistics from the China Tourism Academy.
Since the beginning of the year, dozens of Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen of Guangdong province, Wuhan of Hubei province, Chengdu of Sichuan province, Changsha of Hunan province, and Xi’an of Shaanxi province have launched their own policies in supporting cultural and travel activities at night, said Shen.
Despite the strong demand for high-quality nighttime traveling products, the majority of the offerings on the market, however, are focused on traditional dining, drinking and shopping. Therefore, there is a shortage of integrated and high-quality products, Shen added.
“From the supply perspective, there is spacious room for enhancing nighttime cultural and tourism products in terms of diversification, breadth and depth. The high-quality development of the nighttime economy looks for more cultural embodiment,” Zhao Yijing with the China Tourism Academy said.
China’s large population, its active and innovative online and offline business models, as well as the nation’s culture and history, create broad opportunities for the nighttime economy to explode, Zhang Yi of iiMedia Research suggested.
According to Zhang, over the past few years, Chinese people’s consumption at night was characterized by an increased proportion of online purchases, rising demand for cultural spending, a smaller gap between eastern Chinese cities and inland areas in the west, as well as robust growth in medium and small cities.
Welsh Business Confidence Falls Again Business News Wales
Welsh Business Confidence Falls Again – Business News Wales https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/welsh-business-confidence-falls-again-business-news-wales/
Business confidence in Wales fell five points during September to -4%, the lowest of all UK nations and regions, according to the latest Business Barometer from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking – conducted between 1st-15th September, before the Chancellor’s economic announcement.
Companies in the country reported higher confidence in their own business prospects month-on-month, up 16 points at 18%. When taken alongside their optimism in the economy, down 29 points to -27%, this gives a headline confidence reading of -4%.
Despite the fall in optimism during September, a three-month average of local businesses’ confidence scores reveals a more positive picture. The average sits at a net confidence score of 9%, factoring in monthly scores of July, August and September.
The Business Barometer, which questions 1,200 businesses monthly, provides early signals about UK economic trends both regionally and nationwide. The overall ‘balance’ of opinion weighs up the percentage of firms that are positive in outlook against those that are negative, and gives a net balance on a scale of -100 to 100.
Despite the drop in confidence, Welsh businesses identified their top target areas for growth in the next six months as evolving their offering (33%), investing in their teams (29%) and investing in sustainability (28%).
A net balance of 4% of Welsh businesses expect to reduce staff levels over the next year, up one point on last month.
Overall UK business confidence stayed the same as in August during September at 16%. Despite the net balance of businesses planning to create new jobs increasing by one point to 17%, firms’ outlook on their future trading prospects dropped one point to 25%, and their optimism in the wider economy also fell by one point to 5%.
Three UK regions and nations recorded a month-on-month increase in optimism in September. London (up 12 points to 33%), the South East (up 15 points to 15%) and Scotland (up 10 points to 15%) all reported higher confidence readings with London now the most optimistic region overall. Only Wales (down five points to -4%) recorded a negative overall confidence reading in the last month.
Dave Atkinson, regional director for Wales at Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said:
“Welsh businesses are clearly feeling the effects of the considerable economic headwinds and challenging trading conditions they are currently facing. The country’s renowned tourism and leisure sector, in particular, is facing pressure as consumers cut back on unnecessary spending to save money.
“However, it’s encouraging to see that more than a quarter of firms have identified investing in sustainability as a focus growth area. At Lloyds Bank, we offer specific finance for these types of investments through our Clean Growth Financing Initiative, which provides discounts on our normal commercial lending as an incentive to help Welsh businesses make the most of the sustainable opportunities available.”
Hann-Ju Ho, senior economist for Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking, said:
“It is encouraging to see business confidence stabilising after a three-month decline. Firms’ assessment of their own trading prospects also remained steady and continues to show some resilience during turbulent times. Yet, cost pressures remain, as more businesses look to raise prices to help protect their margins while wage pressures show little sign of abating at this stage. With the recent volatility in financial markets as well as the Government’s Growth Plan and energy cap announcements, it will be interesting to see how these measures affect business confidence.”
Business confidence rose by two points in both the retail and service sectors (15% and 17% respectively), however both these figures are close to 12-month lows. Manufacturing and construction firms saw their lowest levels of business confidence this year, down two points in manufacturing to 14% and down 16 points to 10% in construction. This was driven by overall falling optimism in the economy.

Tracking trends in sustainable home building has been a decades-long passion of Michael Halflants, FAIA—an award-winning design principal with the Tampa/Sarasota firm, Halflants + Pichette.
On September 22, he shared his insights at the Interior Design Society (IDS) Environmental Design Conference: Green Building, Healthy Lives! on the New College of Florida campus. Halflants served on a panel called “Design for Sustainability and Environment,” and focused on the topic of “Sustainable Density.” He joined two other speakers: landscape architect David Young, who discussed “Environmental Landscape Design”; and interior designer Sarit Marcus, who talked about “How to Create an Eco-friendly, Healthy Home.”
Q: What are some ways that Sarasota is moving in the direction of sustainable building?
A: In Sarasota County, 76 percent of households consist of one or two people, yet most of what’s on the market is living spaces with three bedrooms or more. When the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce surveyed young professionals, almost 80 percent of them stated that they wanted to live in an apartment, and 62 percent of them said they were hoping to find a one- or two-bedroom apartment.
If a municipality restricts the number of residential units per acre to an unreasonably low number, as the City of Sarasota does, it encourages the construction of large condominiums to the exclusion of all others. It’s neither sustainable nor equitable to build an entire city of luxury units. The average unit size should be in the range of 1,200 square feet rather than 4,000. A smaller footprint will use less resources to build and bring more residents in close proximity to restaurants and work. Higher density generates less traffic and a smaller carbon footprint per resident. Many municipalities around the country are subjected to a zoning code that makes it difficult to create smaller units, even though they are more sustainable to build and more inviting to a diverse population in terms of income, age and background. These codes can be described as exclusionary zoning where one is excluding potential buyers who can’t afford an enormous unit. It’s not really possible to create affordable units unless we allow for higher density.
Many of the building issues we have in the states and worldwide could be improved if we went away from the model of single-family lots. In the U.S., land development is growing twice as fast as population growth. In terms of the global population, we’re already spending resources faster than can be sustained, and it’s something that needs to be addressed.

Watkins Opposes Parole In ’88 Murder | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/watkins-opposes-parole-in-88-murder-news-sports-jobs-warren-tribune-chronicle/
WARREN — When Dennis Watkins talks about the 1988 trial of Marie Poling, the Howland woman convicted of murdering her husband by shooting him as he slept on the couch after a hard day’s work, the Trumbull County prosecutor has total recall of the three-and-a-half decades old case.
“I don’t forget a detail of that case. After all, we did a lot of work getting that conviction,” Watkins said recently as he sat behind his desk in his fourth-floor office of the county administration building.
Her husband, Richard Poling, also was beheaded.
Watkins is still doing work to keep Poling in prison — 34 years later.
The notorious killer is up for parole later this month as three members of the Ohio Adult Parole Authority will visit with Poling in a conference room outside her cell at the Ohio State Reformatory for Women in Marysville.
This will be the fifth attempt at parole for Poling, who in 1988 was sentenced to 24 years to life in prison. Watkins has written six letters about the case, dating back to Aug. 9, 1988.
“I have consistently and strongly opposed inmate Poling’s release on parole,” the prosecutor writes.
Watkins said he is not surprised to learn about Poling’s exemplary behavior record while in prison.
“After all, she is an actress at heart, not one as accomplished as Meryl Streep, but rather one more like Lizzie Borden,” Watkins writes.
THE CRIME
After shooting Poling in the head, Watkins recalls, she convinced her illicit lover Rafael Garcia — with whom she carried on a torrid affair at their job in a nursing home — to dismember her husband with a rental ax. The pair performed the abuse of the corpse in Poling’s basement and then drove Garcia’s Chevrolet Cavalier on a trip to western Pennsylvania to dump the remains of Richard. They dumped the torso near the old Meadows racetrack off Interstate 79 and later put the head in a wooded area farther north in Washington County.
In the letter, Watkins refers to Poling’s powerful personality, warning parole board members about her “ever-present ability she possesses to manipulate, use and fool others.”
He talks about the woman’s “utter lack of a conscience, which enables her to kill.”
Citing a 2014 letter to the parole board, Watkins said Poling planned for months to murder her husband. “She bragged about getting away with the perfect murder to a friend two years prior,” Watkins said.
Watkins also referred to the details from two police interviews with Garcia. These interviews included present Sheriff Paul Monroe, when he was a young detective with Howland police.
“During conversations with Rafael weeks before the execution of her husband, she told him that she had tried battery acid on a chicken leg and that the acid ‘ate the whole bone,’” Watkins stated.
Watkins recalled that Garcia — minutes before he testified before a grand jury — had confessed to helping Poling. Garcia later pleaded guilty to crimes involving the abuse of the corpse and obstructing justice and served 13 years before being released from prison in 2001.
PLAN UNRAVELED
When Poling’s plan began to unravel, Watkins noted that “she went into her ‘crying-and-lying mode’ with most everyone who would listen.”
“For example, when the torso of Richard’s body was discovered by police in a ravine, she upon request went to the morgue and positively identified Richard’s body by dramatically crying and then caressing and rubbing his cold hand and exclaiming, ‘Who could have done this to my husband!’” Watkins wrote.
Poling continued this type of behavior before the jury at trial, Watkins said, painting a picture that she was an abused wife.
In citing that Poling had enrolled into programs in prison, including one on “Battered Women’s Syndrome,” Watkins wants the board to make one thing perfectly clear:
“Let me inform the board that Marie Poling was never a battered woman, and her trial proved that. In fact, the only battering going on then and perhaps now is Marie Poling’s effort to batter the truth,” Watkins writes.
A DAUGHTER’S TALE
Shortly before Poling’s 2019 parole hearing, Watkins tells the board he was contacted by Richard and Marie Poling’s only daughter, Kimberly.
“(Kimberly) minced no words with me … telling me that she is totally opposed to her mother’s release on parole,” Watkins writes, noting that the Ohio Public Defender Office had asked Kimberly to help with her mother’s parole hearing.
Watkins said Kimberly told him that as a 6-year-old, she was abandoned by her mother when she chose to murder her father.
Now living in Missouri, Kimberly told Watkins and Mary Jo Hoso of the prosecutor’s victim / witness assistance division that she would be willing to come back to Ohio to attend future parole hearings to oppose her mother’s release.
“She believes her mother is evil, and therefore should be required to serve out her life sentence in prison,” Watkins writes.
The prosecutor uses the guidelines of Ohio Administrative Code Rule 5120 to try to convince the board that Poling should not be released. The code states if “there is substantial reason to believe the unique factors of the offense outweigh rehabilitative efforts,” or “if the release of the inmate into society would create undue risk to public safety and / or would not further the interest of of justice nor be consistent with the welfare and security of society,” then the inmate should not be released.
Without any reservation, Watkins believes that Poling committed one of the worst forms to the most serious of crimes one can perpetuate — premeditated murder.
“In summary, whether it is under old or new guidelines today, it appears that the law clearly intends that some of the worst killers should serve actual life sentences. Otherwise why would the legislative authority say ‘life sentence’ when in fact, everyone is released on parole before dying in prison?” Watkins asked.
In conclusion, Watkins thinks there “should be no wiggle room left for this evil-doer and modern-day criminal chameleon.”
Laura E. Austen, deputy director for policy and outreach in the office of the Ohio Public Defender, said it is her office’s policy to not speak about the case of a prison inmate who is preparing for a parole hearing.
Watkins has written six letters about the case, dating back to Aug. 9, 1988.
“I have consistently and strongly opposed inmate Poling’s release on parole,” the prosecutor writes.
Watkins said he is not surprised to learn about Poling’s exemplary behavior record while in prison.

The first Metaverse HK IPO, Flowing Cloud Technology Ltd(6610.HK), officially launched on 29 Sep with the fundraising amount around US$ 100 million.
The deal was widely sought after by the market in HK and overseas. One the first day of book building, the HK public offering tranche was 5 times oversubscribed, which is the largest HK IPO with such multiples of oversubscribe on the book open day this year.
The international placement tranche was also multiple times covered across the price range on the first day. And it has attracted a good mix of investors, including overseas and Chinese long-only funds, hedge funds, family offices, strategic corporates, etc., believing Flowing Cloud Tech might be the next Unity (U.US) in China.
It is worth nothing that the deal had introduced well-known cornerstone investors including SenseTime, the best AI company in China; state-owned investment arm of Anji, one of the development engines beside Hangzhou in Zhejiang province; Tradego, the widely used fintech platform for securities houses in Hong Kong.
Flowing Cloud is a leading AR/VR software technology service company in China, ranking 1st in China’s AR/VR service market in 2021, accounting for 13.5% of the market share.
From 2019 to 2021, Flowing Cloud’s revenue was RMB 251, 339, and 595 million respectively, and the compound annual growth rate of revenue in the past three years was 54.02%. The revenue in the first quarter of 2022 was RMB 228 million, a year-on-year increase of 65.0%.
The company achieved adjusted net profit in 2021 around RMB 105 million and 315.9% year-on-year rate of increase in the first quarter of 2022.
The AR/VR market in China is showing great momentum, both hardware and software. Developing tools will be the critical building blocks in the prosperity of a new world. Flowing Cloud is one of the best players in the software market to provide development service and kits for Chinese business clients. The company maintains good collaboration with Chinese tech giants, such as Baidu, Huawei, Tencent, JD.com, etc.
Flowing Cloud Tech’s valuation is ranged from HK$ 4 to 5 billion, forward P/E around 15x-20x. The reasonable pricing leaves profits on the table for potential investors. Book continues to grow in size and quality with further conversions from management deal roadshow, and will close on 10 Oct.

Zyron Powerpod And Deskpod Review Smallest GaN Chargers Craving Tech
Zyron Powerpod And Deskpod Review – Smallest GaN Chargers – Craving Tech https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/zyron-powerpod-and-deskpod-review-smallest-gan-chargers-craving-tech/
An Australian company began its journey after launching one of the smallest 66W GaN chargers back in March 2021. GaN charger, if you haven’t heard that before, is basically a modern charger utilising Gallium nitride (GaN) technology to charge devices with less heat and more efficient in charging.
Lots of modern laptops can be charged with this technology and it only requires a USB-C cable and a GaN charger, which is relatively much smaller than the traditional laptop chargers that feel like a heavy brick.
We’re looking at some cool and compact GaN chargers today from Zyron Tech Australia: the Powerpod and Deskpod.
Zyron Powerpod 100
Zyron Powerpod 100 is a compact, 100W USB-C PD Charger. At just 210 grams of weight, it is even lighter than the MacBook Pro 16″ charger yet capable of charging up to 4 devices simultaneously. It comes with an AU plug adapter and foldable, fixed US pin. If you often travel to the UK, EU, or Asian countries, the corresponding travel plugs are also sold separately and will work well with the Powerpod.
Note that Zyron sells a few different Powerpod chargers ranging from 65W to 140W. The one I have here (100W) is more than enough for my needs and has enough power to charge my HUAWEI MateBook X Pro 2020 – which only requires 65-Watt to charge. The charger is compatible with other USB-C powered laptops too from various brands like Dell, HP, Apple, Microsoft, etc.
And of course, smaller devices like your smartphones and tablet devices.
Zyron Powerpod 100 comes with 4 USB ports: 3x USB-C and 1x USB-A port:
1x 100W USB-C PD3.0 Output
1x 100W USB-C PD3.0 Output
1x 20W USB-C PD3.0 Output (for smaller devices like smartphones and tablets).
1x 18W USB-A Quick Charger QC3.0 Output
To charge your modern laptop with USB-C, you can simply plug the included 100W USB-C cable into either the first or second slot (you can see the labels clearly on the charger, which is nice so you don’t need to remember which is which).
The included cable is one-metre length (which may or may not be long enough for you) with overvoltage & overcurrent protection.
While you can charge 4 device simultaneously with the Powerpod, the unit obviously needs to share all the power as you charge, so here’s how it works when you charge more than one device on the Zyron Tech Powerpod 100W:
Basically the 100W USB-C power output will go down a bit as it needs to share power with another port but you can pretty much do your own calculation in mind as you pick which port to use to see if you’re happy with the output power. If you are a heavy-charging user, you may want to grab their Powerpod 140W instead.
I really like the compact design and simplicity of the Powerpod. The labels are clear and the plugs are interchangeable, making it the perfect GaN charger to use at home and also overseas since you can prepare which plug you are going to need before you go.
Zyron Deskpod
Zyron Deskpod, as the name suggests, will be on your desk most of the time. It serves as a charging station while simultaneously saving space on the desk.
Compared to the Powerpod, the Deskpod can actually charge 2 laptops at 60W simultaneously via its dual USB-C ports. It offers up to 156W max output via its four USB ports in total (two USB-C and two USB-A ports):
1x USB-C 100W
1x USB-C 100W
1x USB-A 18W
1x USB-A 18W
You can check the power distribution over on the product page at Zyron Tech website to see what happens when you charge multiple devices simultaneously through these ports.
There is a charging stand included in the packaging that can support up to two small devices like your smartphones and tablets. It’s meant to be placed on the desk so you can just plug your laptop on the desk to power and if need be, charge your phone or tablet at the same time. The stand makes it neat to charge while saving the extra space on your desk.
But even when you don’t use it to charge your devices, you can still use the stand on itself to place your devices neatly on the desk.
A 1-metre cable is also included in the packaging, like the Powerpod.
Weighing 306 grams, I can definitely feel the weight when I lift the Powerpod out of the box for the first time. It’s still a great gadget to carry with you on the trip though but you can also place it permanently on your desk so you can power+use your laptop + charge devices when you need to.
It removes some clutter from your desk and serves an excellent, yet compact charging station within reach.
Make sure to check out the Powerpod and Deskpod over at Zyron Tech, along with the other products they have. And don’t forget to use the coupon code CRAVINGTECH to get 5% off if you are making a purchase!

October Starts but Fails to Ignite Crypto Prices
The opening of the historically crypto boom month of October bore a stronger resemblance to the recent dreary days of September.
Bitcoin was recently trading slightly above $19,200, down 0.5% over the past 24 hours and roughly where it stood at the start of the weekend. The largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization rose briefly above $20,000 last week before descending to the ledge it’s occupied for much of the past month.
“Indecision and lack of buying above $20,000 are pushing Bitcoin to test its recent lows,” Joe DiPasquale, CEO of BitBull Capital, wrote in an email, adding optimistically: “If we do drop sharply, the price may bottom soon and put up a nice rally. However, most bulls may be scared out of their longs before that happens.”
Ether was recently changing hands a little below $1,300, off approximately 1.5% from the previous day. The second largest crypt spent much of the past two weeks trading comfortably above this level. Most other major cryptos were recently off with XRP and ATOM falling more than 4% and 3%, respectively, as investors continued to process a range of largely deteriorating, economic indicators and the latest hawkish comments by U.S. central bank Vice Chair Lael Brainard in a speech Friday.
Cryptos tracked equities, which closed a dismal month with a final dismal trading day on Friday. The tech-focused Nasdaq, S&P 500, which has a strong technology component, and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) all finished down at least 1.5% amid ongoing fears that the struggle to end high inflation is leading inevitably to a harsh recession – a so-called hard, economic landing.
By the traditional definition of two, consecutive quarters of negative gross domestic product (GDP) growth, the U.S. has already entered a recession, although its severity and length remain uncertain. The Nasdaq and S&P have decline six of the last seven weeks, and the DJIA recently became the latest index to fall into bear market territory, meaning that it has dropped at least 20% from its last high.
A third consecutive monthly decline in pending home sales offered the latest evidence of the once hot housing market’s cooling and wider, economic slowing. Yet the core personal consumption expenditure (PCE), the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of measuring U.S. inflation, was higher than expected in August, rising 4.9% on a year-over-year basis after increasing 4.7% in July. The reading indicated that inflation will continue to plague the U.S. economy and beyond.
Meanwhile, the cost of Hurricane Ian in structural damage and economic disruption to the Florida presents a fresh wildcard, as First Republic Bank noted in a weekly review to investors. “The total cost of the hurricane is unknown, but given the scale of this natural disaster, it’s possibly one of the most expensive in U.S. history,” the bank wrote. The overall economic effects depend on the breadth and duration of the disaster.”
Investors will be eyeing the release on Monday of September’s ISM Manufacturing index, which is expected to remain unchanged, and the September unemployment rate on Friday, which is expected to remain at its current 3.7% reading.
On Saturday, citing three unnamed sources, CoinDesk reported that Indian exchange WazirX had laid off about 40% of the company’s workforce. And U.S. crypto exchange giant Coinbase temporarily halted transactions from U.S. customers, according to a status update made by the crypto exchange at 7:57 a.m. ET Sunday morning. Later Sunday, the Financial Times reported that Alex Mashinsky, the embattled founder and former CEO of Celsius Network, removed $10 million from the now bankrupt crypto lender weeks before Celsius halted customer withdrawals in June.
“A terrible week, month, and quarter for stocks was not exactly mirrored by Bitcoin,” wrote Oanda Senior Market Analyst Edward Moya in an email, adding that last week’s declines in bond yields had provided “some relief for crypto.”
“Bitcoin’s hodlers remain unfazed and if Wall Street avoids any major de-risking moments, the world’s largest crypto could continue to stabilize here,” he wrote.

The Dollar Can Be a Protocol for the Future of Money
This week in San Francisco I attended Circle Internet Financial’s star-studded Converge conference and was struck by the wide array of projects working with its USDC stablecoin.
Participants included Latin America-based payments company Ripio, which is seeing surging demand for USDC transfers in Brazil and Argentina, or the Web3 service provider Recur, which solely accepts the stablecoin from users of its various metaverse worlds, including Star Trek Continuum.
It seems USDC, the second most-traded stablecoin, is developing its own “ecosystem,” a word (perhaps overused) that open-source advocates apply to networks of third-party developers and providers that build on a tech platform. Below I’ll get to a lesson I see here for U.S. lawmakers contemplating what digital form the dollar should take. But let’s first reflect on these ecosystem ideas as they pertain to a stablecoin like USDC. It’s not an obvious concept, though its implications are profound.
You’re reading Money Reimagined, a weekly look at the technological, economic and social events and trends that are redefining our relationship with money and transforming the global financial system. Subscribe to get the full newsletter here.
Let’s compare Converge to NEARCon, the annual conference sponsored by the Near Foundation I attended two weeks ago in Lisbon. It’s easier to understand that event as an “ecosystem conference.” Like other such gatherings – Ethereum’s Devcon being a prime example – Near uses it to bring together and energize the far-flung community of developers and companies building dapps and other services with smart contracts that run on its protocol.
USDC isn’t a smart contract protocol for dapps. It’s primarily a payment vehicle, conceived of by most people as a “coin.” It is a tokenized expression of dollar-based value that happens to be more fluid than non-digital dollars, one that can be exchanged peer-to-peer over public blockchains. (Circle’s launch on Wednesday of a new cross-chain transfer protocol brings USDC a little closer to a more common definition of a crypto protocol, but it’s not why all those third-party, USDC-tied providers attended the event.)…
In case you missed it, here is the most recent episode of “First Mover” on CoinDesk TV:
Historically, September was a bad month for bitcoin, with the crypto showing negative returns in each of the last five years. Is October’s record better? CoinDesk’s Christie Harkin and George Kaloudis discuss what is impacting the crypto markets and what to watch out for next week.

Greek Life At The U Of A Hosts Its On Us Week University Of Arkansas Newswire
Greek Life At The U Of A Hosts It’s On Us Week – University Of Arkansas Newswire https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/greek-life-at-the-u-of-a-hosts-its-on-us-week-university-of-arkansas-newswire/
The Charlie & Cappy Whiteside Greek Life Leadership Center is proud to announce its annual It’s On Us Week to be held Oct. 3 – 7 on the U of A campus.
“Our goal is to continue providing educational opportunities and resources for all U of A students to prevent sexual assault,” said Parice S. Bowser, director of Greek Life. “This includes working with both faculty and staff to create a change. We all can play a major role by stepping up, stepping in and speaking out to stop sexual assault. It’s On Us, Arkansas.”
It’s On Us, launched in 2014, began as a campaign started by the White House under former President Barack Obama and then-Vice President Joe Biden, to raise awareness and help put an end to sexual assault on college campuses. The campaign serves as an opportunity for students to be a part of the solution. It’s On Us asks everyone to step up and realize they can help end sexual assault.
The aim in hosting this week is to provide opportunities to support survivors, provide educational opportunities, educate individuals on consent, debunk various myths surrounding sexual assault and sexual violence, and to bring awareness to the problem.
The It’s On Us campus campaign has over 82 sponsors and aims to reach a broader base of the population through its pledge and awareness efforts. Everyone is encouraged to sign the official It’s On Us pledge, which will then put their name on the pledge list on the official website.
When asked about the importance of the week, current Panhellenic President Kinsey Landry said, “The Panhellenic Council is an organization for women led by women. With an overwhelming number of sexual assault survivors being women, it’s important for our council to take an active stance against sexual assault and raise awareness. Through educational programming and conversations that take place during It’s On Us Week, we hope sexual violence can come to a stop. We understand that the work that happens this week must continue. There is no place for sexual assault on our campus.”
This year, Greek Life has partnered with a variety of campus and community partners including the Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, United Greek Council, Greek Life Facilitators, Order of Omega, Associated Student Government, University Housing, RESPECT, Center for Sexual and Relationship Violence, NWA Center for Sexual Assault and the U of A Title IX Office. TFSC Recognizes First Cronan Award Recipients | University Of Arkansas – University Of Arkansas Newswire https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/tfsc-recognizes-first-cronan-award-recipients-university-of-arkansas-university-of-arkansas-newswire/
The Wally Cordes Teaching and Faculty Support Center is pleased to announce that professors David Fredrick and Stephen Caldwell are the inaugural recipients of the Paul Cronan Technology Teaching Excellence Award.
The award recognizes Cronan, a founding co-director of the TFSC and a long-time professor in the Information Systems department. It is used to recognize a faculty member who has creatively used technology to enhance their teaching at the U of A. The award consists of a recognition plaque and a $500 Teaching Enhancement Grant from the Cordes TFSC. The inaugural award has a second grant that is funded by the M.D. Matthews Chair in Information Systems currently held by Cronan, which also supports excellence in teaching. “It’s good to see so many great applications and such expertise in teaching; the students are the winners,” says Paul Cronan, who served as one of the judges for this inaugural award.
About the Winners
David Fredrick of the Classical Studies Department has been deeply involved in using the technology and interdisciplinary creativity of video games to enhance student experiences at the U of A. This includes on-campus and Study Abroad courses in archaeological visualization, video game criticism, virtual reality, immersive retail and game design itself. He has won national and international awards for his creative use of technology.
Stephen Caldwell, of the Music Department, used technology during the pandemic to create a virtual choir. Students recorded themselves on their smart phones, which Caldwell then put together. The video of the performance of the U of A Choir singing became a viral sensation. Additional videos were created throughout the Fall 2020 semester. The Schola Cantorum, which Caldwell directs, took the idea a step farther and created original music and used video technology to create a combined performance. Caldwell won a national award for the creative use of technology during the pandemic.
Each awardee was recognized at the Faculty Teaching Awards Reception on Sept. 27. Award nominations will open again in the spring of 2023.

“Perla,” the woman who allegedly helped arrange migrant flights from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, has been identified by CNN as Perla Huerta.
In mid-September, about 50 migrants were flown from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard in two planes organized by Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis as part of his criticism of the federal government’s immigration and border security policies. Most of the asylum seekers are known to be from Venezuela.

Mannarino Doesnt Check Draws; His Next Surprise? A Wawrinka Showdown ATP Tour
Mannarino Doesn’t Check Draws; His Next Surprise? A Wawrinka Showdown – ATP Tour https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/mannarino-doesnt-check-draws-his-next-surprise-a-wawrinka-showdown-atp-tour/
Adrian Mannarino will sleep well Sunday night on the eve of the Astana Open. He’s one of those tennis players who chooses not to dwell on what lies directly ahead.
“I don’t want to talk about the draw or who I’m facing or whatever because I’m not looking,” the 34-year-old said at the beginning of a Sunday interview. “The quality of the tournament? I don’t know anything.”
Given the formidable ATP 500 field gathered in Kazakhstan, it’s probably just as well Mannarino doesn’t know that he’ll be facing three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in the tournament’s very first match (12 noon, local time) on centre court at the National Tennis Centre.
Yes, at the moment, you actually know more than he does. Mannarino is coming off a first-round loss in Tel Aviv, where he was the seventh seed, to fellow Frenchman Constant Lestienne. The good news? He beat Wawrinka in the only match they ever played in the second round of the 2015 Miami Open presented by Itau – prevailing in a pair of taut tie-breaks.
This is one of six first-round singles matches, featuring three seeded players, that will unfold Monday.
Following the opening match, seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz faces Francisco Cerundolo. The night session (6 p.m. local) kicks off with eighth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime versus Roberto Bautista Agut – perhaps the finest quality matchup in the first round. The nightcap is fifth seed Andrey Rublev against qualifier Laslo Djere.
The only doubles match: Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek against the Kazakhstani wild-card team of Grigoriy Lomakin and Denis Yevseyev.
The first match of the day on Court 1 has Botic Van de Zandschulp opposite Kazakhstan wild card Beibit Zhukayev.
Van de Zandschulp has a fascinating backstory. He’s played 58 matches so far this year at the tour-level – previously, he had only played 27.
The 26-year-old from the Netherlands is ranked No. 35, but a year ago he had to qualify for all four Grand Slam events. He went a searing 11-1 in those qualifying matches, reaching the main draw at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and the US Open. As it turned out, he got into the Wimbledon field as a lucky loser.
At last year’s US Open, the Dutchman became only the third male qualifier to reach the quarter-finals. There, he faced Daniil Medvedev – and was the only player to take a set from the eventual champion. He finished the season as the Netherlands’ No. 1 and has been adapting to this, his first full season on the ATP Tour.
“Yeah, I think I did quite all right,” Van de Zandschulp said in an interview. “It was pretty tough, actually, playing first time Cincinnati and Montreal, four matches in total. I was not ashamed to lose to [Cam] Norrie or [Daniil] Medvedev.
“Winston-Salem [semi-finals] was good. It’s still figuring out what the best schedule is for me. There’s ups and downs, and hopefully I can manage things to the end of the year.”
The Dutchman will play Astana and is scheduled for Antwerp, Basel and Paris. And then – after “a small vacation” – there is some unfinished business in Australia, where the Netherlands will play in the November Davis Cup quarter-finals. Van de Zandschulp was a big part of the victory in Glasgow, Scotland, where he and his team defeated Kazakhstan, Great Britain and the United States to win Group D.
This season, he said, has involved a steep learning curve. With access to so many tournaments, it’s been difficult to keep his schedule manageable. Previously, when he was playing Challengers, his travel was generally restricted to Europe, with two major trips to Australia and the United States. Traveling more and playing fewer matches – against better opponents – has been challenging.
“You learn a lot from the experience,” Van de Zandschulp. I want to finish the season strong and be in the Top 30 at the end of the year – seeded in Australia. That’s the end goal for the year.”
Unlike Mannarino, he fully understands what is at stake here in Astana. If he manages to defeat Zhukayev, 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic could await in the second round.
“On paper, Novak’s the toughest one in the draw,” said the Netherlands star. “Never played him before, and hopefully I can if I win my first match and he wins his. So, yeah, really looking forward to it.
“It’s always nice to play someone for the first time, especially him.”

Denmark says Nord Stream 1 pipelines stop leaking
HELSINKI (AP) — Authorities in Denmark say the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipelines have stopped leaking. The announcement Sunday came a day after officials said that the ruptured Nord Stream 2 pipelines also appeared to stop leaking. The Nord Stream AG company informed the Danish Energy Agency that a stable pressure now appears to have been achieved on the Nord Stream 1 pipelines. The Danish agency said Saturday the Nord Stream 2 ruptured natural gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea appears to have stopped leaking natural gas.
Allies aim for risky Russian oil price cap as winter nears
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials celebrated at the start of September when top allies agreed to back an audacious, never-before-tried plan to clamp down on Vladimir Putin’s access to cash. The countries would pay only cut-rate prices for Russian oil. That would deprive Putin of money to keep prosecuting his war in Ukraine, but also ensure that oil kept gushing out of Russia and kept global prices low. But nearly a month later, the organization made up of some of the world’s leading economies, the Group of Seven, is still figuring out how to execute their plan and gather participants.
Biden pledge to make federal fleet electric faces slow start
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden, a self-described “car guy,″ often promises to lead by example on climate change by moving swiftly to convert the sprawling U.S. government fleet to zero-emission electric vehicles. But efforts to eliminate gas-powered vehicles from the fleet have lagged. Biden last year directed the government to purchase only American-made zero-emission passenger cars by 2027. But the General Services Administration, which buys two-thirds of the federal fleet, says there are no guarantees. It cites big upfront costs and specialized agency needs, such as off-road vehicles for national parks that have limited EV options. About 13% of new light-duty vehicles purchased across the government this year — meaning about 3,550 — were zero emissions.
Business sentiments cool as cheap yen, costs weigh on Japan
TOKYO (AP) — A Bank of Japan survey has found business sentiment among large manufacturers worsened for the third straight quarter. Japan is grappling with rising costs, the dropping value of the yen and reduced economic activity amid the coronavirus pandemic. Worries are growing about how the Bank of Japan hasn’t gone along with other central banks in tightening interest rates to curb growing inflation. The “tankan” survey released Monday showed more large manufacturers found business conditions to be negative rather than positive. Sentiment among large nonmanufacturers improved.
Tesla sales bounce back in Q3 but fall short of estimates
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Tesla’s sales rose 35% in the July-September period compared to the second quarter as the company’s huge factory in China got past supply chain issues and pandemic restrictions. The electric vehicle and solar panel company said Sunday it sold 343,830 cars and SUVs in the third quarter. That fell short of Wall Street estimates. So far this year, Tesla has sold 908,573 vehicles. It will need a strong finish to the year to hit its predictions of 50% annual sales growth. The company needs to sell 1.4 million vehicles this year to meet that goal.
US shift away from coal hits tribal community in New Mexico
KIRTLAND, N.M. (AP) — The lights are out at a coal-fired power plant in northwestern New Mexico that has provided electricity to millions of people across the southwestern U.S. for nearly a half-century. The closure of the San Juan Generating Station follows years of legal battles by environmentalists and mounting regulatory pressures aimed at curbing pollution and climate change. The realities of closing the plant and the adjacent mine are now setting in for surrounding communities, many of which are home to Native Americans. Hundreds of good-paying jobs are evaporating along with tens of millions of dollars in annual tax revenue that’s used to fund local schools.
Rebel violence in eastern Congo causes hunger to soar
NYIRAGONGO, Congo (AP) — Humanitarian workers say hunger is now soaring in eastern Congo after months of fighting between M23 rebels and the army. An internal draft assessment by aid groups seen by The Associated Press says nearly 260,000 people are facing extreme food insecurity in Nyiragongo and Rutshuru territories. But only 10% of those targeted by aid groups this year received the full recommended food assistance. That’s because of a lack of funds and security concerns that has restricted access to some areas. Health staff at one hospital said that the number of severely malnourished children had nearly tripled between April to July.
Chinese billionaire Richard Liu settles US rape allegation
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — JD.com founder Richard Liu has agreed to settle a lawsuit from a former University of Minnesota student who alleges he raped her after a night of dinner and drinks in 2018. Attorneys for Richard Liu and the woman, Jingyao Liu, released a joint statement Saturday night saying the case was settled. They did not disclose a settlement amount, but said the incident resulted from a misunderstanding and they agreed to settle their differences. Richard Liu was arrested on suspicion of felony rape in August 2018. Prosecutors never filed charges, saying the case had “profound evidentiary problems.” He stepped down as JD.com’s CEO this year amid increased government scrutiny of China’s technology industry.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia has attacked the Ukrainian president’s hometown with suicide drones. This comes as Ukraine has pushed ahead with its counteroffensive that has embarrassed the Kremlin. Ukraine took back control of the strategic eastern city of Lyman, which Russia had been using as a transport and logistics hub. That’s a new blow to the Kremlin as it seeks to escalate the war by illegally annexing four regions of Ukraine. Photos circulating online pointed to some battlefield movement for Ukraine, showing Ukrainian soldiers entering what appeared to be newly retaken settlements in the south and east. Pope Francis, meanwhile, on Sunday decried Russia’s nuclear threats against the West and appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop “this spiral of violence and death.”
UK’s Truss sticks by economic plan as her party worries
LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Liz Truss has acknowledged she could have done a better job “laying the ground” for her package of unfunded tax cuts. But she insisted Sunday that she would push on with an economic plan that has caused turmoil on financial markets and weakened the country’s public finances. Truss acknowledged that the U.K. faces “a very turbulent and stormy time” but said her policies would lead to a “high-growth, low-tax economy” in the longer term. The comments are unlikely to calm Truss’s Conservative Party. The party opens its four-day annual conference on Sunday amid plunging poll ratings and growing public discontent.

Lagos Megacityll Have Solar Roofs Helipad Punch Newspapers
‘Lagos Megacity’ll Have Solar Roofs, Helipad’ – Punch Newspapers https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/lagos-megacityll-have-solar-roofs-helipad-punch-newspapers/
The Managing Director of GIDI Homes, Akerele Tobi, during the inauguration of Eko Beach City, said the developers of the city are in partnership with international companies for the provision of solar roofs and helipads for all residents of Eko Beach City.
The recent inauguration of hundreds of acres of land mega-city in the Abijo area of the state was done in collaboration with three major brands, KOEN Homes, RIEL Homes, and GIDI Homes, alongside other passive collaborators.
Akerele said Eko Beach City was a vision, mission and a movement.
He said, “We are creators of earth green and aqua city in Nigeria, and we are changing from the normal.
“We are in partnership with a firm that has over 40,000 consultants. People believe the vision to be able to enjoy a healthy environment they would love to be part of.
“The main challenge is that our policies in the country can be changed overnight and investors would not want to come into a country that does not have regulated policies.
According to him, one of the challenges faced was that of government policies, and the government should partner the private sector more.
He noted that the aim of the development of the city was affordability.
Akerele said, “What we are doing is that at least, you do not have to break the bank, you should be able to afford a healthy environment.
“There is a difference between just buying land and buying comfort and peace of mind, where you can sleep at night and have the best feel.”
The developer said Eko Beach City was the first residential scheme that would have the beach.
He said, “The city has a helipad, so once there’s traffic, we are trying to say that there is a way we can beat this traffic.
“Also, we are working with our waterways. Now, all these are unique. The most important part of it is the area of healthy living. According to statistics, we were made to understand that 80 per cent of the death of our newer children in Nigeria is caused by polluted air.
“That is why we are planting about 5,000 trees in Eko Beach City to get a purer air. That is why I would say that Eko Beach City is the answer and the future.”
In addition, he said the future of real estate in Nigeria, Lagos especially, would keep on increasing, because demand was more than the supply.
The Chief Operating Officer of Eko Beach City, Ayorinde Ejioye, enjoined the government to provide mortgages for real estate companies to enable client’s pay for a period of 10 years, without affecting the operations of the real estate company involved.

USATSI
The Miami Heat have agreed to a four-year, $130 million contract extension with reserve guard Tyler Herro, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and confirmed by CBS Sports’ NBA Insider Bill Reiter. Of that total figure, $120 million is guaranteed and the remaining $10 million with be available via incentives, according to Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press. Herro is the reigning Sixth Man of the Year award winner after averaging 20.7 points per game for the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed.
Despite that success a season ago, Herro’s postseason was largely disappointing. He averaged only 12.6 points per game while dealing with injuries that kept him out of most of the Eastern Conference Finals. Miami lost that series to the Boston Celtics. Afterward, Herro was the subject of trade rumors involving Kevin Durant and Donovan Mitchell, while Herro made it clear that he no longer wants to come off of the bench.
“I would like to start,” he said in his exit interview. “It’s my fourth year (next season), so I think I’ve earned it. We’ll see what happens.”
Heat president Pat Riley made it clear that Herro would need to earn a starting job by committing defensively.
“The next step for him — and I think we’re seeing this in the league — if you want to win a championship and you wanna be a starter, you really have to become a two-way player today,” Riley said in a media conference after the season. “You have to improve in certain areas of your game. … I saw improvement in his defense this year. He’s got great feet, he’s got quick feet. He just needs to get stronger, again. Add another 10 pounds of muscle mass. He just needs to get stronger from a leverage standpoint.”
Unclear in this extension is how the Heat will use Herro this season. The Heat are certainly paying him like a starter, but if Miami wants to use him as a reserve again, Herro suddenly has 130 million reasons to accept it. Either way, the Heat have locked up a player they consider part of their long-term core for the foreseeable future.

How Forever 21 Does Marketing In The Metaverse – Coin Crunch India https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/how-forever-21-does-marketing-in-the-metaverse-coin-crunch-india/
The fast fashion brand Forever 21 hopped on to the metaverse bandwagon with an exclusive partnership with the Virtual Brand Group. With this business deal announcement, Forever 21 was instantly in the news in all major media reports. Let us figure out if this one was a hit or a miss!
Exclusive promo of Forever21 Shop City by Roblox
Platform
Forever 21 Shop City is built by Virtual Brand Group on Roblox. With a net worth of $30.52 billion, Roblox is the 595th most valuable company in the world. It is an online gaming platform that has more than 230 million active players and 32.6 million daily active players. Having such a huge community of gamers, it presents opportunities in abundance on platter for brands that want to enhance their digital presence in the virtual space for the younger generation of customers.
Concept
The Forever 21 Shop City is sort of a real-life market that is planned around a virtual Forever 21 Store. The game is targeted at fashion enthusiasts, bloggers, and influencers who can create, own, and manage their own Forever 21 shops. There are two collection types meant for winter and summer styles available. Players can run their shops with real-world business-like functionalities such as inventory stocking, hiring employees, decorating their shops, addressing customers, and competing with other Forever 21 shops to become the ‘top shop’ in the metaverse. The players can also shop from the Forever 21 Store, style their avatar, and gain same Forever 21 accessories IRL.

Promotions
Forever 21 was razor focused on their target audience– teenagers and early 20’s youngsters. Thus, their promotion strategy included various collaborations with digital influencers. Initially promotions were launch to give away the brand gears from the virtual space and in real life. However, it was for a short time-frame campaign.
Influencers:
Sam Jordan (@Builder_Boy) curated the Forever 21 Shop City fashion line in partnership with @Beeism, @OceanOrbsRBX, and @JazzyX3, who have all created exclusive items for Forever 21 Shop City. Forever 21 Shop City featured shops personally designed by influencers such as KrystinPlays, Shaylo and the Sopo Squad.
PR and Media Releases:
Apart from this, there was a heavy PR activity conducted to promote the presence in the metaverse. A cover in the major fashion magazines was featured to gain attention of the fashion and business world. This promotion strategy proved to be bang on.
Media coverage of Forever 21 metaverse news
Experience
As soon as I entered the Forever 21 shop city, your avatar gets is asked to pick a ready-to-customise shop and you have no idea of the location, features, etc; all shop options look identical. I just picked a random shop. I got 2000 points (Roblox money) for building the shop setting up clothing racks, furniture etc. and instructions give you an idea of how to do it but the items are priced too high to fill the shop or do much with the decore.
Forever 21 shop from Forever 21 Shop city
It is heavily promoted that Forever 21 shop city metaverse features four themed divisions- entertainment, obstacle course, food court, and yellow carpet. After running around in circles, I could only identify three areas viz shop, food court, and the yellow carpet that leads to the Forever 21 Store. I tried using different devices and joining at different time of the day, but the navigation in the metaverse was difficult.
In the game, you are expected to set up a shop, earn points to add features to your shop like exterior and interior designs, architectural themes, lights, and seating arrangements. I tried decking racks with stock from the shop builder but the clothing was not available. The instructions suggested did not work for me on any device. Since, this was the main function in the metaverse, I tried harder and I watched few videos of influencers who have built their shops. But the influencer videos are made from level 3 or above so it is difficult to explain how to reach the level where clothing is available. Also, I had to figure out how to earn the points on my own by watching multiple videos on YouTube.
When you reach the Forever 21 Store, a yellow carpet is laid out to welcome you (I guess). The Forever 21 Store is a four floor hyper-urban building with each floor dedicated to clothing, collections (Collab 21), store furniture and décor. Just outside the store entrance, there is a herd of paparazzi waiting for your pictures and cheers every time you enter or exit the Forever 21 Store in the metaverse (refer promo video). It was quite a unique element and a good add on. Inside the Store, you will find more furniture and design elements than the actual products. The Store sells furniture set-up for shops too. But this is the place where we expected Forever 21 to put more of its own products from the fashion line. Even though the mannequins are decked up in Forever 21 clothing and accessories, you get the option to buy only a few items that are in the display, not the entire look.
Forever 21 Store Collection Collaboration displayed on second floor
There are some unique and interesting elements like you can collect goodies laying on the road or just roam around the city or eating from street food vendors. I was more interested in checking out different food vendors on the roads than doing the runs between the Store and my shop. No food was served to me though. Clearly, the current experience is flawed and would need improvement in every aspect.
A Hit Or A Miss?
Reach:
As per some reports, Forever 21 Shop City metaverse has had 49.4 million daily active users after a month of its launch. The Roblox game page of Forever 21 Shop City tells a different story though. It shows the game has 0 active players as of today. There were 255.4k+ visits till date in total ever since the game launched on December 14, 2021.
Screenshot of Roblox Forever 21 Shop City home page
Engagement:
In the attempt to offer immersive customer experience, Forever 21 Shop City missed out on basic user-experience. The concept was interesting; however, the experience fails to be sticky. There are various flaws in the game. The brand is too pushy with putting itself out there way too much on the street, store and floor. The game plan of users creating their own shops was different but the routine execution of ‘sell apparels, manage the shop customers, and run from shop to the Forever 21 Store to collect inventory and repeat’ is all too generic and bland.
There are technical flaws in the game where your avatar might get stuck and you will have to figure out how to get out and get going. I felt, there is an opportunity for the brand to do a lot more with the metaverse given the space, time, and concept of a real market to make the experience more engaging.
Conversion:
The brand claims certain products became too popular in the game such as digital black beanies with the word “Forever” were a massive hit on the virtual world platform. It sold about 2,000 units a day at 50 cents each, and is on track to sell 1.5 million units by the end of this year. The cost to create them however, was less than $500 total.
Virtual Brand Group makes a number of claims on its website about Forever 21 brand presence, community, and sales. However, these claims are to be verified.
In my honest opinion, Forever 21 has a long way to go in the metaverse to achieve what they have envisioned in terms of engagement and conversion. The brand could have achieved the current short term benefits in a much lesser cost just by selling NFTs or add-ons with other game collaborations. By venturing into a dedicated gamified fashion retail metaverse, they over-complicated things for themselves.
I think the brand realises this and that is why they launched a digital store for wearables (a collection of NFTs only) in the Decentraland and threw a massive launch party on March 27, 2022.
3 Simple Tips For An Ergonomic Laptop Experience For Your Teens And Tweens Cool Mom Tech
3 Simple Tips For An Ergonomic Laptop Experience For Your Teens And Tweens – Cool Mom Tech https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/3-simple-tips-for-an-ergonomic-laptop-experience-for-your-teens-and-tweens-cool-mom-tech/
If your kids are using a laptop or Chromebook for their schoolwork (or gaming), there are a few simple things you can teach them (and purchase) to help them avoid tech neck. Yes, it’s totally a thing (says the person who’s on her computer most hours of the day). Here are our tips, tricks, and gadgets that you’ll be glad to know about.
Cool Mom Tech is a reward style affiliate.
Read this post about blue light glasses. Do kids need them?
1. Make sure the laptop or chromebook is at eye height. As tempting as it might be for your teens or tweens to sit on the couch or in bed, it’s actually pretty terrible for their necks. If you’ve got a designated work space for them, consider investing in a laptop stand, like this highly-rated option that even has a photo stand too, which will help raise their laptop up to their eye level. You can also easily store it in the cabinet or shelf, and they can just pull it out when they’re working at the kitchen table (which is what my kids do).
2. If you’ve got their computer on a stand, an ergonomic keyboard is a good idea, like this one that’s pretty popular with tech users. Not all keyboards are created equal; an ergonomic one is actually created to ensure the user’s hands are in a comfortable position. The same goes for an ergonomic mouse as well. This one from Logitech is on the pricier side but the reviews are fantastic. It’s a worthy investment if your kids are on their computer a fair amount, which seems like the case for most kids (but especially kids who are doing online school).
3. Along with a good chair, make sure your kids know the importance of taking breaks. The 20-20-20 rule is extremely effective and it’s so easy to remember: Take a break every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps rest their brains and their eyes. It’s also not a bad idea for them to get up and move around, too, which if your kids are like mine, might be tricky if they’re using their laptop for Minecraft or other gaming purposes.
Keep in mind, these tips aren’t just for tweens or teens. If you’re like me and happen to work on a computer all day long, these are important tips to consider for yourself, too.

Best Crypto To Buy CoinMarketCap CoinCodex DEXTools Chart & Price Data Business 2 Community
Best Crypto To Buy – CoinMarketCap, CoinCodex, DEXTools Chart & Price Data – Business 2 Community https://bexarcountynewsonline.com/best-crypto-to-buy-coinmarketcap-coincodex-dextools-chart-price-data-business-2-community/
Crypto price tracking and charting sites are frequently visited by traders and investors to gauge the best crypto to buy on a given day – ‘CoinMarketCap’ alone is typed into Google 1.2 million times a month according to keyword data tools.
‘CoinGecko’ is searched 356k times a month, ‘DEXTools’ (which tracks tokens on decentralized exchanges) 77k times a month, and ‘CoinCodex’ 5.3k times.
Where to Find the Best Crypto to Buy Right Now
An important factor when deciding on the best crypto to buy, especially for short term trades, is that market participants are aware of a coin, actively engaged and talking about it, as well as buying it:
1. DEXTools Crypto Trends
For example the hottest altcoin on DEX platform Uniswap, according to DEXTools, is Tamadoge (TAMA) at the time of writing, followed by HEX.
The ‘hot pairs’ trending cryptocurrency section of DEXTools is updated in real time.
2. CoinCodex Trending Cryptocurrency List
To add confluence to DEXTools, traders might also check CoinCodex – which has a top trending crypto coins feed.
Tamadoge is also the most trending cryptocurrency now on CoinCodex – as it is listed on both DEXes and CEXes (OKX exchange and Bitmart).
Terra Classic (LUNC), Ethereum and Solana are also among the top trending cryptocurrency assets at the time of writing.
3. CoinMarketCap Most Visited Cryptocurrency Feed
Making things even easier for beginner traders, CoinMarketCap has a ‘best cryptos’ section with the tagline:
‘The Best Cryptos Based On The Latest Data – Our cryptocurrencies to watch lists are based on the latest price and user behavior data.’
That includes several crypto price feeds, including:
Most viewed (tokens most searched for on CoinMarketCap)
Recently added (new cryptocurrency assets)
Top crypto gainers today, and the top losers
Trending cryptocurrency
For example at press time the most visited cryptocurrency price pages on CMC include those of LUNC, Tamadoge, Solana and more.
The most trending crypto coin on a given day can be influenced by news coverage – e.g. updates to a token’s roadmap covered in media – or its performance that day, e.g. the Tamadoge price pumped over 150% in 24 hours in early October.

Pro-Russian groups are raising funds in cryptocurrency to prop up paramilitary operations and evade U.S. sanctions as the war with Ukraine wages on, a research report published Monday revealed.
As of Sept. 22, these fundraising groups had raised $400,000 in cryptocurrency since the start of the invasion on Feb. 24, according to TRM Labs, a digital asset compliance and risk management company.
The research revealed that groups, using encrypted messaging app Telegram, are offering ways for people to send funds which are used to supply Russian-affiliated militia groups and support combat training at locations close to the border with Ukraine.
One group TRM Labs identified raising funds is Task Force Rusich which the U.S. Treasury describes as a “neo-Nazi paramilitary group that has participated in combat alongside Russia’s military in Ukraine.” The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFCA) has sanctioned Task Force Rusich.
On a Telegram channel, TRM Labs discovered this group was looking to raise money for items such as thermal imaging equipment and radios.
The Novorossia Aid Coordinating Center, which was set up in 2014 to support Russian operations in Ukraine, raised about $21,000 in cryptocurrency, mainly bitcoin, with the aim of buying drones, the report said.
Russia was hit by a number of sanctions after its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine earlier this year that aimed to cut it off from the global financial system. At the time, there were concerns that Russia could use cryptocurrency to evade these penalties. However, experts said that there is not enough liquidity in the crypto system on the scale Russia would require to move money.
But with the paramilitary groups, they’re moving money on a smaller scale, which is enough for the items they need to buy.
These groups are likely using exchanges that don’t necessarily comply with anti-money laundering and other regulations, according to Ari Redbord, head of legal and government affairs at TRM Labs.
“They’re probably using non-compliant exchanges to off-ramp those funds [into fiat currency],” Redbord told CNBC.
“And you can do that. You just can’t do that at scale. And I think that’s that that’s where … we’ll say, will there be more? Of course, there’ll be more. But will it be billions of dollars? Highly unlikely.”
Redbord said TRM Labs used a combination of publicly available wallet addresses as well as cross-checking other websites and activity online to identify the Russian-linked groups. However, he did say it’s not possible to know whether these groups were working with the Russian government or are in any way backed by the Kremlin.
Cryptocurrencies have been thrust into the spotlight during the Russia and Ukraine war. Ukraine has been seeking donations via digital coins, which can be sent quickly across the world. But they’re now also being used by Russian paramilitary groups.
“I think an interesting part of this story is that crypto is just a form of payment in these cases. It’s a way to move funds. And there’s an example of it being used for good and example of it being used for bad in this context,” Redbord said.

With this, Bharti Airtel has become the first company to launch 5G services in the country.
“When you (Prime Minister) will launch 5G today. 5G from Airtel will be available in 8 cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Bangalore and other cities,” Mittal said.
He also said that Airtel will roll out 5G services in several cities across the country by March 2023 and across India by March 2024.
According to the telecom department, 5G technology is expected to deliver ten times better download speed than that of 4G and up to three times greater spectrum efficiency.
Mittal lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s understanding of technology and connecting it with the nation’s progress.
“We are proud and very fortunate that we have amongst us a leader who understands technology meticulously. Many leaders appreciate technology but its granular understanding and linking it for the progress of the country, according to me what Modi Ji can do no one else will be able to do,” he said.
He also acknowledged the contribution of Reliance Industries Limited chairman and managing director Mukesh Ambani to the growth of 4G.
“I would like to remind Mukesh (Ambani) when he gave a lot of pace to 4G and we had run very fast to catch up with it. When COVID hit, the pulse of this nation did not stop even for a minute. Our work continued round the clock and its credit goes to Digital Mission,” Mittal said.
He said that the Prime Minister gave the slogan of startups, which led to the creation of unicorns every month. “I believe that with 5G hundreds of used cases will create thousands of entrepreneurs and dozens of new unicorns,” he said.
According to a senior company official, Airtel 5G services will be available at existing 4G rates and a new tariff for 5G will be announced after some time.
The officer said the 5G services are also being launched in Chennai, Hyderabad, Nagpur and Siliguri. Bharti Airtel Chief Technology Officer Randeep Singh Sekhon said that the company’s backend infrastructure is ready.
“We need to install some equipment on mobile towers for 5G service. We are doing it gradually. As of today, the service will be available in the area close to towers where the equipment has been installed,” Sekhon added.
